Iran war divides conservatives on and off stage at CPAC

    Grapevine, Texas—

As the daughter of an American oil field worker living in Iran in the 1970s, Blake Zummo watched as the streets around her regularly descended into violence in the years before the Iranian revolution.

Now 62 and residing in Texas, she rejects arguments — including from fellow Republicans meeting this week in the Dallas suburbs for the Conservative Political Action Conference — that President Donald Trump is dragging the United States into an unnecessary war in the Middle East.

“This is finally the first president that had the nerve to go in and do what needed to be done to protect the American people,” Zummo said outside the conference hall.

The conference known as CPAC opened Thursday against the backdrop of a conflict with Iran that is exposing a growing chasm in the GOP. The divisions — playing out especially online but also each time conservatives gather in public — have unnerved a Republican Party already straining to hold together Trump’s coalition heading into the midterm elections.

CPAC chairman Matt Schlapp acknowledged there will be “a lot of conversations about the consequences” of the war with Iran if Republicans lose the House and Senate in the fall, and he anticipated that angst would be on display throughout the event.

“Any time there’s a military operation, people are nervous about it,” Schlapp told CNN moments before the conference opened. “And the CPAC population isn’t any different.”

Schlapp said he wouldn’t censor what people say from the stage and has designed a program that leans into the debate. It included a panel on Thursday called “MAGA vs. Mullah Madness” featuring victims of the Iranian regime, while Reza Pahlavi, the son of the former Iran shah who has supported Trump’s military campaign, is scheduled to address the event. On screens between speakers, a video plugged CPAC for Iranians in Exile, a group created to support the country’s diaspora.

Attendees also heard from former Rep. Matt Gaetz, and former Trump strategist Steve Bannon and Blackwater founder Erik Prince will address the conference as well — all outspoken skeptics of US military action in Iran.

On his “War Room” podcast this week, as Trump moved more troops into the Middle East, Bannon predicted to his listeners that the military action in Iran was “going to get really, really, really ugly.”

“Anybody telling you otherwise, all these people going on Fox blowing smoke, they ain’t out on that front line, and they ain’t got kids out there either,” Bannon said. “They have no skin in the game. Zero.”

Though Trump hasn’t signaled so far that he plans to send troops into the country, Gaetz warned the CPAC crowd Thursday evening that “a ground invasion of Iran will make our country poorer and less safe. It will mean higher gas prices, higher food prices, and I’m not sure we would end up killing more terrorists than we would create in Iran.”

    ‘Kind of disillusioned with Trump’

One person who won’t be part of the debate is Trump. The president is not expected to appear at the conference for the first time in a decade.

A recent CBS News/YouGov poll showed Trump’s military action is overwhelmingly popular among Republicans, though self-identified MAGA supporters are more supportive (92%) than Republicans who don’t identify with the movement (70%). However, Trump’s 2024 victory was also built on support from nontraditional voters — young people, minorities and disaffected White men who rarely participated in electoral politics in the past.

Richard Baris, a conservative pollster, said fewer of those people are identifying as MAGA, a phenomenon that the Iran war has accelerated. Young people in particular are far more skeptical of Israel than bedrock Republican voters, Baris said, and the Trump administration has done little to counter the view among some critics that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is leading the US into another open-ended Middle East conflict.

“There’s a resentment now with younger Republicans toward Israel because they feel like the US put Israel before them,” Baris said.

That sentiment was reflected among younger CPAC attendees like Alexander Selby, an 18-year-old political science student at the University of Pittsburgh, who said the war shouldn’t be a priority for Trump as many Americans struggle economically.

“He campaigned on no new wars. I didn’t really believe that when he did it, just cause if you look at the people who surround him, it’s very obvious he was never going to do that,” Selby said. “A lot of people — conservatives, young conservatives right now are kind of disillusioned with Trump and I’d consider myself one of those.”

    Long history of Iran hawkishness

CPAC has undergone several transformations over the decades — from a gathering for conservatives to shape the party’s direction to a loyalty test for Trump’s MAGA movement — but hawkish warnings about Iran have remained a constant.

GOP presidential contenders — including then-Sens. John McCain in 2008, Rick Santorum in 2011 and Marco Rubio in 2015 — have come to CPAC to convince conservatives they would stand up to Iran. Longtime Iran hardliners like John Bolton were once cheered on at CPAC while blasting President Barack Obama for negotiating a nuclear deal with the country.

Trump himself struck a similar tone before becoming president. In 2015, he unequivocally told the conference that Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon, and we must protect Israel,” a message he repeated in 2022 and 2023.

Now, with conflict underway, the threat of a prolonged American engagement is no longer theoretical. Mark Wallace — the CEO of United Against Nuclear Iran who displayed an Iranian drone at CPAC last year (one of two he owns) — acknowledged the challenge ahead rationalizing the war to a MAGA coalition that includes many skeptics.

“The United States is fundamentally an isolationist country. That will always be a part of our politics,” Wallace told CNN this week. “I’m not afraid of that and I think we should have to defend ourselves and I do think this action very clearly meets the hangover test of Vietnam and Iraq.”

Wallace said he hopes to convince conservatives when he addresses CPAC that Iran has been at war with the US for half a century and ending the threat makes the country and the region safer.

Many people won’t need to be swayed. Dozens of attendees joined a group of exiled Iranians in attendance Thursday as they walked the halls of the conference center, chanting for regime change and celebrating Trump’s military campaign.

A beaming Zummo was among them.

“This is putting America first,” she said.

Fugitive ex-police officer suspected of killing the mothers of his children is arrested in Portugal

    March 27, 2026 / 6:53 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

Portuguese police have arrested a former French police officer suspected of killing his partner and his ex-girlfriend after kidnapping them and their children.

Cedric Prizzon, a one-time member of the Paris police and a former rugby league youth international, is also a fathers’ rights activist who had been involved in a bitter public custody battle with his former partner.

He had been stripped of his custody rights and had already been already convicted of harassing his former partner, after he illegally took their son to Spain for several weeks in 2021.

Portuguese police said they found “two bodies buried… in an isolated place” late Wednesday, a day after stopping the 42-year-old Prizzon in a car near Meda in the north of the country with his two children, a 12-year-old boy oand an 18-month-old baby girl.

Officers found a pump-action shotgun, fake documents and number plates, and about $20,000 in cash in the vehicle, the National Republican Guard (GNR) said in a statement on social media, which included a photo of the seized items.

Portuguese police said that the two found bodies were of the “partner and ex-partner” of the suspect, but that “procedures to identify the victims and consolidate the evidence are ongoing.” The High Council for the Judiciary on Thursday identified the victims as Audry Cavalier and Angela Cadillac, the Reuters news agency reported.

A court in Vila Nova de Foz Coa, not far from where Prizzon was detained, remanded him in custody on Thursday evening after several hours of questioning.

He is suspected of aggravated homicide, desecrating a corpse and kidnapping, judicial officials said.

The two children are to be returned to France, authorities said.

A judge prohibited Prizzon from contacting the two children, “including telephone, social media, email, written messages, or through third parties,” Reuters reported.

    “Unhinged”

French police have been hunting Prizzon since the women disappeared from their homes in the Aveyron area of south-central France last week.

The search for the powerfully built rugby prop forward began after his former partner disappeared on Friday.

The 40-year-old did not show up for work in an insurance company and her son was not at school.

Prizzon, his new partner, aged 26, and their baby daughter were also missing from their home in the nearby village of Savignac.

Detectives quickly suspected that Prizzon was behind the abductions.

As part of a bitter battle against his ex-partner over their son, Prizzon had mounted a campaign against her on social media, accusing her of endangering their child.

He also took part in protests along with other fathers who had lost custody of their children.

Locals in the two villages where the women lived were horrified by their deaths.

One woman in her 60s told AFP that although she thought Prizzon was “unhinged,” she “thought he would never go so far.”

Knives out for Fetterman as Democrats turn on one-time progressive star

Rep. Brendan Boyle says Fetterman ‘needs to go’ after the senator helped confirm Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin

    By Charles Creitz
    Fox News

    Published March 27, 2026 6:00am EDT

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman is facing escalating backlash from within his own party, with one House Democrat saying this week she has more success working with a Republican senator and another calling for him to step down.

The criticism reflects growing friction between Fetterman and his progressive political base as he breaks with Democrats on key issues, including his support for Israel, backing of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, and openness to voter ID. Once a darling of the political left who exchanged endorsements with socialist Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Fetterman now finds himself a target of attacks from his own party.

“I have more success in working with the one on the R side of the aisle than I do with the D side of the aisle,” Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., said at a recent event, contrasting Fetterman with Sen. David McCormick, R-Pa.

DAVID MARCUS: CAN JOHN FETTERMAN SAVE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY FROM ITSELF?

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., speaks to a reporter as he arrives in the U.S. Capitol for a vote on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.(Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc)

The remark drew jeers from the audience at the event, where Houlahan spoke in opposition to the SAVE America Act, GOP-led legislation that includes voter ID requirements and other changes to election rules.

Houlahan urged voters to call “the office of your choice in the Senate” to voice opposition to the bill, adding that requiring “some form of ID is not an unreasonable ask,” but that “this bill is not that.”

Fetterman did not respond to a request for comment but said in a March 17 statement that he would vote against beginning debate on the bill while underlining his support for Voter ID.

“Stop turning this into a Christmas list and attacking vote-by-mail,” he said.

    Houlahan declined further comment.

Last week, Rep. Brendan Boyle of Northeast Philadelphia took intraparty tensions with Fetterman to the next level by demanding his ouster.

Boyle, who did not respond to a request for comment, lambasted Fetterman for helping Mullin get confirmed.

“Once again Senator Fetterman shows why he is Trump’s favorite Democrat,” Boyle said in a statement. “He needs to go.”

Rep. Pat Ryan, D-N.Y., a combat veteran and political moderate who has vocally opposed Mullin’s candidacy, echoed Boyle and blasted Fetterman for effectively getting the secretary confirmed.

“If you needed any more proof that Fetterman has completely abandoned his constituents, here it is. Pennsylvanians deserve a Senator that actually fights for them,” Ryan said in a statement.

Fetterman was not always a political maverick, having once been a progressive favorite praised for his blunt and unfiltered style. As lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, he championed the legalization of marijuana and pushed aggressively for criminal justice reforms supported by Democrats. He aligned with the democratic-socialist Sanders wing of the party and hung pride and weed flags from his balcony at the State Capitol.

In 2020, Harrisburg Republicans inserted language in a budget bill to ban flags other than the national, commonwealth and POW/MIA banners from being posted at the Capitol, to which Fetterman quipped, “it’s kind of flattering that they changed Pennsylvania law just for me.”

Now, Fetterman recently claimed his party is “governed by TDS” — Trump Derangement Syndrome — and that he will always refuse to label Republican opponents “fascist” or make references to the Third Reich.

Fetterman also told “Hang Out with Sean Hannity” that he has encountered his former 2022 Republican foe Dr. Mehmet Oz — the current federal Medicaid administrator — and that the two maintain a civil relationship with no ill will.

He also issued a statement defending his support for Mullin.

“In January, I called on the president to fire [Kristi] Noem — and he did. I truly approached the confirmation of my colleague and friend, Senator Mullin, with an open mind,” Fetterman said.

“We need a leader at DHS. We must reopen DHS. My ‘aye’ is rooted in a strong committed, constructive working relationship with Senator Mullin for our nation’s security.”

The Justice Department on Friday faces the first public court test of its effort to investigate President Donald Trump’s 2020 election defeat, as it fends off a lawsuit seeking a return of 2020 Atlanta-area ballots the FBI [seized in an unprecedented move] earlier this year.

The litigation has already revealed the administration’s probe is being driven by Trump allies with a history of putting forward debunked theories alleging fraud in the 2020 election. The presence of Director of National Intelligence [Tulsi Gabbard] at the January ballot seizure further has raised questions about the scope of the investigation, as her office has no authority over domestic election administration and the FBI’s warrant application for the search did not make allegations of foreign meddling.

Fulton County Board of Commissioners Chairman Robert Pitts and other local officials are suing to have the materials returned. They argue that the FBI misled the magistrate judge who approved the warrant allowing the seizure by allegedly not including all relevant information in the application. The Justice Department has defended the seizure and argued the county officials have not met the high threshold for requiring the return of the election materials.

    Ad Feedback

Friday’s hearing will be closely watched for what it reveals about the administration’s larger investigation in the 2020 election, which has also included a grand jury subpoena of 2020 election records in Arizona.

County officials told US District Judge JP Boulee, a Trump appointee, in court filings that if legal guardrails are not imposed on the Trump administration’s approach, the FBI could use a similar search warrant to seize ballots “even in the middle of recounts in contested battleground states.”

That concern is what makes Boulee’s ultimate opinion in the dispute so important, said Michael Moore, who was a US attorney in Georgia during the Obama administration.

The judge must make sure “whatever he writes, it’s not used as a weapon in the fall of 2026,” Moore told CNN.

Scrutinizing the DOJ’s justification of the seizure

The warrant was sought by a US attorney in Missouri, Tom Albus, who is also serving as a “special attorney” in the Justice Department to investigate election issues nationwide. According to the warrant affidavit, the probe was launched because of a referral of [Kurt Olsen], a lawyer who was involved in Trump’s schemes to overturn the 2020 elections and who is now the White House’s director of election security and integrity.

The Justice Department says it is investigating supposed discrepancies in the county’s records of scanned ballot images, alleged “irregularities” in the tabulator tapes created by its election machines, and claims that some absentee ballots were suspect because they didn’t have fold marks. The Justice Department alleges possible violations of federal statutes that require election officials to preserve voting records for 22 months after an election and that prohibit tampering with the vote.

Among the witnesses the FBI cited in its affidavit are members of the State Election Board [who have relentlessly been] pursuing theories that the 2020 count in Georgia was flawed. The allegations surfaced in the warrant have been previously aired and largely debunked.

The county says the Justice Department erred by neglecting to include that full context, and filed a declaration from a seasoned election expert, Ryan Macias, to push against the claims the election was unlawfully mishandled. It also says the DOJ should have told the magistrate judge that the affidavit was citing witnesses who had faced court sanctions or had other credibility issues.

The parties have not indicated on the public docket the witnesses they intend to call. However, Boulee has already sided with the Justice Department in deciding on Thursday that the affiant, FBI agent Hugh Raymond Evans, did not have to testify at Friday’s hearing, as Fulton County had sought.

A banner of President Trump hangs from the Department of Justice building in Washington, DC on February 23, 2026.

    Annabelle Gordon/Sipa USA/AP/File

Still, Boulee was not convinced by the Justice Department’s larger arguments that the dispute was a narrow legal question that did not warrant an evidentiary hearing. The administration has stressed the role a magistrate judge played by approving the warrant, but Boulee has said that the fact that the Justice Department obtained a warrant for the search does not, by itself, decide whether there was a “callous disregard” of the Fulton County officials’ rights with the search — the legal question he will be considering Friday.

He is giving each side two-and-a-half hours to use as it pleases, whether that’s presenting evidence, cross-examining the other side’s witnesses or making legal arguments.

When can a court second-guess an FBI search warrant?

The Justice Department said in filings that if the judge were to side with Fulton County’s request, it would “open the floodgates to parties who” would use similar challenges to search warrants “as a way to get a sneak peek at ongoing criminal investigations.”

Ironically, the Trump administration is touting the president’s appeals court loss in his efforts to challenge the FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago in 2023 to argue that the court should not meddle with the criminal probe into the 2020 election now.

The lawyers who represented the defendants in the prosecution that grew out of that search now occupy top roles at the Justice Department. Trump’s personal lawyer Todd Blanche is now the deputy attorney general, while the lawyer who represented a Trump employee charged in that case, Stanley Woodward, serves at the department’s no. 3 lawyer and was the top signatory on the DOJ’s legal filings in the current dispute.

Fulton County says that the DOJ is wrong to wield the appeals court precedent in that case — which was issued by the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals, the appeals court that oversees courts in Florida and Georgia. The local officials argue that they’re using a different legal framework — the callous disregard framework, set forth by a legal procedure known as Rule 41(g) — than Trump did when he sued over special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation.
