House Majority Leader Steve Scalise invoked Mayor Zohran Mamdani in the wider DHS funding fight

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s handling of a massive snowstorm that had hit his city last month.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

The No. 2 House Republican in Congress tore into Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday after cold weather left 18 New York City residents dead.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., made the comments in the context of warning that Democrats’ rejection of a bipartisan compromise on funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will leave critical offices — like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) — with a dire lack of money.

“What is not funded if the Democrats get their way? They will literally shut down funding for disaster relief and FEMA,” Scalise said. “In the middle of a storm that in New York City alone — you want to see what socialism gets you — people now have frozen to death under the leadership of the socialist Mamdani. That’s what Democrat leadership gets you.”

Mamdani confirmed on Monday that an 18th person died in New York City during a period of dangerously low temperatures up and down the East Coast.

“Since Friday’s press conference, one additional New Yorker lost their life on the streets of our city as a result of this cold snap. The total lives lost is now 18. Each life lost is a tragedy, and we will continue to hold their families in our thoughts,” Mamdani said during a press conference about a separate issue.

He urged homeless residents to shield themselves from below-freezing temperatures at a shelter, while his administration has also deployed warming vehicles throughout the city.

Republicans, however, have accused Mamdani of not doing enough to expand access to emergency services during the bitter winter.

Scalise also pointed out that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) could also see its employees forced to work without pay if DHS funding lapsed.

“They want to shut down TSA. So just take Atlanta’s airport, LaGuardia [in New York City]. Those two airports alone having been shut down, if the Democrats get their way, will wreak havoc with tens of millions of Americans who just want to go see their family members, want to travel for a wedding, or whatever the case may be,” he said.

“Maybe they’re trying to start a small business and want to go to another city to try to create some jobs. They won’t be able to do that because Democrats want to have a tantrum, not to defund ICE, because again, ICE is fully funded, but just because they want to cause chaos in America to get open borders.”

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), whose funding Democrats have taken issue with specifically, got an injection of billions of dollars from President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” last year.

Fox News Digital reached out to the New York City mayor’s office for a response to Scalise’s comments.

Analilia Mejia will win the special primary in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District in a tight race over former Rep. Tom Malinowski, a major win for an ally of Sen. Bernie Sanders and other progressives.

Malinowski conceded on Tuesday in a statement in which he gave Mejia “unequivocal credit for running a positive campaign and for inspiring so many voters on Election Day.”

    Projected Winner

Notably, Malinowski blamed the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which helped fund a group that spent roughly $2 million on ads targeting him. The group, United Democracy Project, sought in its ads to portray Malinowski as supportive of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, pointing to a 2019 vote for a bipartisan spending bill that provided funding to the agency.

    Ad Feedback

“I wanted so much to be able to tell you today that this effort, which was meant to intimidate Democrats across the country, failed in NJ-11,” Malinowski said in his statement. “But the huge difference between the early vote, which we were winning comfortably, and the Election Day vote, suggests that it had a major effect. I met several voters in the final days of the campaign who had seen the ads and asked me, sincerely: ‘Are you MAGA? Are you for ICE?’”

Thursday’s primary to replace now-Gov. Mikie Sherrill was seen as an early testing ground for the debates that will shape the Democratic push to retake the US House in this year’s midterms.

A win by Mejia, who served as political director on Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, is a major success for national progressive leaders who had backed her run, like Sanders as well as Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Mejia was the former head of the Working Families Alliance in New Jersey and is currently serving as one of the executive directors of Popular Democracy, a network of grassroots organizations.

“Like many Democrats in this moment, I am not only appalled at MAGA, at Trumpism, at Donald Trump’s administration – their overreach, their corruption, their blatant hypocrisy – but I’m also ticked off at my own Democratic leadership,” she told CNN during the campaign.

Malinowski is a moderate who had been supported in the past but expressed openness for conditioning aid to Israel as the national Democratic Party shows more skepticism about the Israeli government in the wake of its offensive following Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attacks.

Mejia, meanwhile, was the only person at a candidate forum who raised her hand when asked if she agreed with human rights groups that say Israel has committed a genocide in Gaza.

A source close to AIPAC told CNN that there was concern that Malinowski, with his profile, seniority, and likelihood of a long career, would be worse for Israel allies than a progressive in Mejia who they see as less influential.

The source also says they are assessing closely whether to spend money and run ads again in the district in June, when there will be a primary for the next two-year term, or in the November general election.

United Democracy Project launched a new ad campaign Wednesday in Illinois’ 7th District backing Melissa Conyears-Ervin.

Trailing the top two vote-getters in New Jersey were former Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way and Essex County commissioner Brendan Gill, among a ballot of more than a dozen Democratic primary candidates.

Meija will face Republican Randolph Township councilman Joe Hathaway, who ran unopposed, in the general election on April 16, and will be favored in a district that voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris by nearly nine percentage points in 2024.

    Updated on: February 10, 2026 / 11:04 AM EST / CBS News

Judge rejects Trump administration’s effort to obtain Michigan voter data

    Updated on: February 10, 2026 / 11:04 AM EST / CBS News

Washington — A federal judge on Tuesday rebuffed the Justice Department’s effort to obtain sensitive voter information from Michigan, joining a growing number of judges who have tossed out lawsuits brought by the Trump administration in its bid to secure voter registration lists from states.

U.S. District Judge Hala Jarbou granted a request from Michigan officials to dismiss the lawsuit from the Justice Department seeking voter registration data from the state, finding that federal voting laws do not require the records to be disclosed.

Judges in Oregon and California have also rejected attempts from the Justice Department to force those states to hand over their voter rolls.

The Justice Department sought an electronic copy of Michigan’s voter registration list last July, including full names, birth dates, addresses and either driver’s license numbers or partial Social Security numbers for the state’s more than 8 million voters.

But after Michigan officials said they would only turn over its public voter registration list, which leaves out certain sensitive personal information, the Trump administration sued the state and sought a court order requiring Michigan to disclose its full voter registration list.

In a brief 23-page decision, Jarbou found that three federal laws — the Help America Vote Act, the National Voter Registration Act and the Civil Rights Act — do not allow the U.S. to obtain the voting records. She also warned that interpreting the National Voter Registration Act to require the disclosure of private information submitted for voter registration

布利(J.P.

Court unseals more records in Fulton County suit over FBI’s seizure of 2020 election documents

    February 10, 2026 / 11:57 AM EST / CBS News

A federal court in Georgia unsealed key records related to the FBI’s seizure of 2020 election materials from Fulton County last month, following an emergency lawsuit filed by the county last week that seeks to regain control of thousands of files.

On Jan. 29, the FBI executed a search warrant at a Fulton County elections office, seeking to take ballots as part of an ongoing investigation into the 2020 presidential election.

Last week, Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts and the county’s Board of Registration and Elections sued to compel the return of over 650 boxes containing the 2020 election-related materials, but the case and related filings were initially sealed.

On Saturday, U.S. District Judge J.P. Boulee ordered the court documents in the case to be unsealed by close of business Tuesday, including the county’s motions to return the documents and to unseal the full law enforcement affidavit that served as the legal basis for the raid. That affidavit has not yet been unsealed.

The county asked for the “return of all original seized materials” and asked Boulee for an order instructing the government “to maintain, but not review, any copies of the seized materials until this matter is resolved.”

The FBI’s search warrant for the raid sought “all physical ballots” from the 2020 election in Fulton County, as well as tapes from vote-tabulating machines, ballot images and voter rolls.

According to a copy of the search warrant that was filed in federal court by Fulton County officials in a separate civil matter, the bureau appears to be investigating potential violations of two federal laws.

One of those laws makes it a crime for elections officials to intimidate voters and to deprive them of a fair election by submitting fraudulent ballots or voter registration applications. The other law requires election officials to retain federal election records for 22 months.

The warrant was signed by a federal magistrate judge, which is typical in criminal cases. Authorities must show probable cause to a judge before they sign off on a warrant.

The Justice Department lawyer listed on the search warrant was Thomas Albus, interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri. On Tuesday morning, Albus formally filed his name on the court docket in Georgia, indicating he will be leading the Justice Department’s court proceedings in the case. It’s unclear why Albus is leading the case, and not a Justice Department attorney from Georgia.

Fulton County is a key Democratic stronghold in Georgia, and President Trump and his allies’ false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him centered on the election results there. The allegations, all unfounded to date, included claims that there was widespread voter fraud that led to Joe Biden’s narrow win in the state.

In December, the Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit against the Fulton County clerk of courts, asking a judge to force the handover of the 2020 election-related documents. The department alleged that the county had failed to hand over the material before the lawsuit was filed. The county has moved to dismiss the suit, arguing that the Justice Department did not have a legitimate reason to obtain the records.

Vance: US should get ‘some benefit’ from Greenland if it’s going to be ‘on the hook’ for protecting territory

Vice President JD Vance made remarks in Armenia as Trump administration pushes to acquire Danish territory

Vice President JD Vance said Tuesday that the United States should get “some benefit” from Greenland if it’s going to “be on the hook for protecting this massive landmass.”

Vance told reporters in Armenia that, “it’s very early in the Greenland talks,” amid the Trump administration’s push to acquire the Danish territory.

“We’ve been working quite a bit on this over the last few weeks, but it’s just very simple. Greenland is very important to the national security of the United States of America,” Vance added.

“I do think that some of our allies have under-invested in Arctic security, and if we’re going to invest in Arctic security, if we’re basically going to pay a lot of money and be on the hook for protecting this massive landmass, I think it’s only reasonable for the United States to get some benefit out of that, and that’s going to be the focus of the negotiations here over the next few months,” Vance said.

RUSSIA, CHINA SQUEEZE US ARCTIC DEFENSE ZONE AS TRUMP EYES GREENLAND

President Donald Trump said in mid-January that the U.S. needs Greenland “for the purpose of national security.”

“It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!” Trump said at the time.

A week later, Trump said, “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region.”

NATO CHIEF WARNS EUROPE CAN’T DEFEND ITSELF WITHOUT US AS TENSIONS RISE OVER GREENLAND

“This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations,” the president said on Truth Social.

However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen then insisted that Denmark would not negotiate on its sovereignty despite Trump announcing the “framework” of a deal.

“Security in the Arctic is a matter for the entire NATO alliance. Therefore, it is good and natural that it is also discussed between NATO’s Secretary General and the President of the United States. The Kingdom of Denmark has long worked for NATO to increase its engagement in the Arctic,” Frederiksen noted in a statement, which was written in Danish.

“We have been in close dialogue with NATO and I have spoken to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on an ongoing basis, including both before and after his meeting with President Trump in Davos. NATO is fully aware of the position of the Kingdom of Denmark. We can negotiate on everything political; security, investments, economy. But we cannot negotiate on our sovereignty,” she asserted.

Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt said earlier this month that, “We are pursuing a diplomatic solution through negotiations” with the U.S. and that she is “hopeful and optimistic that we will find common ground that respect our red lines,” according to Reuters.

Ketanji Brown Jackson says Supreme Court justices “get along well”: “A model for learning how to disagree”

    February 10, 2026 / 12:20 PM EST / CBS News

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said Tuesday that the justices on the court “get along well” despite their different viewpoints and believes it’s “a model for learning how to disagree without being disagreeable.”

“The court is very good at compartmentalizing, meaning that we focus on our work,” she told “CBS Mornings.” “We work very hard. We come up with our own individual opinions as to how we think about the law.”

“We’re sort of always thinking about the law in different ways. And so we have learned how to adapt to being in an environment with people who have very strongly held but different views,” she said.

She said the justices as a body and as a group are “very collegial.”

Ketanji Brown Jackson on “CBS Mornings,” Feb. 10, 2026. CBS News

Jackson became the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court when she was sworn in nearly four years ago. She has since emerged as one of the court’s strongest critics of President Trump. Her dissent in last year’s nationwide injunction case, which reined in federal judges’ ability to issue sweeping orders and stemmed from Mr. Trump’s executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship, prompted an unusually sharp reply from Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Five other justices joined Barrett, who said Jackson’s dissent “chooses a startling line of attack.”

When the court ultimately ruled that the administration could move forward with Mr. Trump’s plan, Jackson stood alone, saying the order is “not only truly unfortunate, but also hubristic and senseless.”

As the Supreme Court takes months to come to decisions on other hot-button issues, including Mr. Trump’s tariffs, Jackson said “there are lots of nuanced legal issues that the court has to thoroughly consider.”

“We actually deliberate over a period of time where each of the justices decides how they feel about the issues and writes, and it takes a while to write,” Jackson said.

    “We will make it through”

In the latest edition of her book “Lovely One” geared toward young adults, Jackson includes a speech she gave at a debate tournament while in high school in 1987. She told “CBS Mornings” that the point of the speech was to “really get people to focus on the moment and try to not be so overwhelmed by the circumstance.”

She believes this moment in U.S. history is divided, but said “we’ve certainly had other periods in our history in which we’ve been divided and we’ve come through them.”

“If people really focus on their own values and the things that matter to them, if they invest in their communities and in their loved ones, we will make it through,” she added.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defends visit to Epstein’s island with his family

    February 10, 2026 / 1:40 PM EST / CBS News

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick acknowledged Tuesday visiting Jeffrey Epstein on his private island in 2012, as Senate Democrats called into question his credibility on the issue. Justice Department files on Epstein released recently show Lutnick and Epstein had a closer relationship than Lutnick has previously stated.

Maryland’s Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen recalled that Lutnick had previously claimed to have cut off contact with Epstein, Lutnick’s neighbor in New York, in 2005, “but now it turns out not to be true.” Lutnick said last year he had “limited interactions” with Jeffrey Epstein, but documents show they were in business together as recently as 2014, and emailed as recently as 2018, the year before Epstein’s death.

“The information recently revealed from the Epstein files show that your statements were at best highly misleading,” Van Hollen said. He added later, “Mr. Lutnick that does call into question your fitness for the job you now hold and the question of your credibility.”

Lutnick continued to distance himself from Epstein while admitting to the interactions revealed in the Epstein files. Lutnick said he met with his next-door neighbor two times in 14 years, and “I did not have any relationship with him, I barely had anything to do with that person. Okay?”

But Lutnick admitted he, his wife and kids, and another family visited Epstein on his private Caribbean island.

“We had lunch on the island, that is true, for an hour. Then we left with all of my children, with my nannies and my wife all together. We were on family vacation. We were not apart. To suggest there was anything untoward about that in 2012, I don’t recall why we did it. But we did,” Lutnick said.

Oregon Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley also noted interactions between Lutnick and Epstein — ranging from a business deal to emailed gripes about an art museum’s expansion — that Merkley said “collectively, it suggests that when you said in 2005 you cut off all contact, that was not a full and complete accounting.”

Epstein and Lutnick’s signatures appear on neighboring pages in a 2012 contract, which was first reported by CBS News. The convicted sex offender and the former chairman of the financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald each acquired stakes in a now-shuttered advertising technology company called Adfin. They signed the contract on Dec. 28, 2012, four days after Lutnick’s visit to Epstein’s island.

The deal was struck more than four years after Epstein agreed to enter a guilty plea to Florida state charges of procuring a child for prostitution and soliciting a prostitute. The case raised allegations of a far broader sex trafficking scheme, and Epstein was charged with federal felonies including trafficking.

Democrats on the Appropriations committee urged Lutnick to submit his own records proving his interactions with Epstein were limited to what’s already publicly known.

Lutnick indicated he would consider doing so, but stopped short of promising.

“I will surely talk about that. I hadn’t thought about that. I have nothing to hide, absolutely nothing,” Lutnick said.
