    The Trump administration increased pressure on crime cartels operating out of Brazil on Thursday by moving to classify two of the country’s biggest drug gangs as foreign terrorist organizations.

    The two syndicates — First Command of the Capital (PCC) and Red Command (CV) — likely have more than 50,000 members combined, according to The Associated Press.

    “Today, the U.S. Department of State is designating Comando Vermelho (CV) and Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) and intends to designate both groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs), effective June 5, 2026,” the State Department said in a statement.

    “CV and PCC are two of the most violent criminal organizations in Brazil. Together, they command thousands of members and have orchestrated brutal attacks against Brazilian police officers, public officials and civilians. Their influence and illicit networks extend far beyond Brazil’s borders, across our region and into our country,” the statement said.

    The Trump administration, the department added, will continue to utilize all available tools to protect the nation and U.S. national security interests by keeping illicit drugs off American streets and disrupting the revenue streams funding violent narco-terrorists.

    “Today’s action taken by the State Department further demonstrates the Trump Administration’s unwavering commitment to dismantling cartels and criminal organizations in our region and ensuring the safety of the American people,” the department said in a statement.

    The new designation also came after conservative Brazilian Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro met with President Donald Trump in Washington to urge the administration to formally designate the gangs as terrorist entities.

    “I went specifically to ask him to designate the CV and PCC as terrorist organizations, because that’s what they are,” he told reporters in Washington.

    With Brazil’s presidential election slated for October, supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro have campaigned for the U.S. designation to target the public security failures of current leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

    Proponents argue that the PCC and CV operate across international borders through drug trafficking, money laundering, weapons smuggling and territorial control, making them comparable to other transnational groups already labeled as terrorist organizations by the U.S.

    Lula da Silva’s government strongly opposes the designation, arguing the gangs are heavily armed criminal enterprises rather than ideologically motivated terrorist groups. Lula is also seeking re-election.

    Brazilian authorities launched a major anti-gang financial crackdown this week targeting fraud and money-laundering networks allegedly linked to PCC operations, The Associated Press reported.

    Prosecutors revealed that the investigation uncovered billions of reais moved through fintech firms and shell structures.

    Last year, Brazilian authorities also uncovered a sprawling criminal network that had infiltrated parts of the fuel industry and connected to the financial sector through money-laundering schemes involving members of the PCC.

    At the time, authorities seized 1.2 billion reais (approximately $220 million) in assets, the outlet said.

    The bodies of six of the nine missing workers have been recovered from the aftermath of a chemical tank implosion at a pulp and paper mill in southern Washington state, authorities said Thursday.

    The tank ruptured at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. facility in Longview, a city located along the southern Washington border with Oregon, on Tuesday. Two people had previously been pronounced dead, bringing the total death toll to 11.

    The six bodies recovered Thursday were found in what was described as a workers’ area, where employees would gather before and after their shifts. Authorities had previously noted the implosion happened during a shift change.

    Responders couldn’t say when they expected to recover the final three bodies. Longview Fire Department Battalion Chief Matt Amos said Thursday the scene was “very complex,” with industrial hazards like exposed electrical wiring and collapsed structures making recovery difficult. He also noted crews have to rotate in and out of the scene and go through a decontamination process every time they leave.

    Several more people were injured in the incident, but the exact number and their conditions were unclear Thursday. Some of the patients had been transported to the Legacy Oregon Burn Center in Portland, Oregon.

    The tank that failed was holding white liquor— a chemical commonly used in paper and pulp processing, which consists of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. Authorities previously said the tank had an approximate capacity of 900,000 gallons and was about two-thirds full at the time of the incident. Local authorities estimated Wednesday that roughly 25,000 gallons of material may remain inside the damaged tank, and it is leaking out slowly.

    Amos said the tank was in the same condition Thursday as it was the day before.

    Addressing the environmental concerns from the incident, Environmental Protection Agency coordinator Brooks Stanfield said Thursday that while hydrogen sulfide was a main concern, none has been detected in the air. However, some of the liquid from the tank leaked into a complex of nearby ditches that sit above a source for the city’s drinking water, and that people and pets have access to.

    Chris Collins, a Public Works director, said testing indicates the water is safe to drink for now and that “there is no cause for concern.” Collins said the water is drawn from an aquifer that is 200 feet deep, and the wells are “very protected” from surface environmental concerns.

    Stanfield said authorities were implementing a two-part plan to clear the ditches, involving pumping fresh water into the system to dilute the chemicals, and then flushing it out into the Columbia River once the pH, or acidity, is brought down to a safe level. Collins said fire hydrants were being opened up to help with that effort.

    Stanfield also said white liquor from the tank failure had reached the Columbia River in the first minutes after the rupture, but the exact volume isn’t known.

    “The understanding is it was very limited,” he said, adding, “It is safe to fish and swim in the Columbia River right now.” He did note dead fish were found in the contaminated ditch complex, and they expect to continue to find more until that system can be safely flushed.

    Nippon Dynawave’s director of support services, Brian Wood, said the mill was shut down after the implosion, with only “some critical infrastructure” still operating with “minimum staffing.” He said the company has “made arrangements” to pay people who are not working and “will continue to do so.”

    Asked about public safety concerns at the plant, Wood told reporters, “We work in a highly hazardous atmosphere and a highly hazardous industry. We approach it with the utmost care in everything that we do. I’ll let the facts speak for themselves.”

    A Russian drone struck an apartment building in NATO-member Romania, its defense ministry said early Friday morning local time, wounding two people.

    “During the night of May 28-29, the Russian Federation resumed drone attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania,” the Romanian defense ministry said.

    “One of these drones entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar as far as the southern part of the city of Galati, and crashed onto the roof of an apartment building, with the impact triggering a fire,” it said. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled after the drones were detected in Romanian airspace.

    Local emergency services said two people with abrasions required medical treatment, and noted that the fire was extinguished.

    A nationwide air raid alert had also been issued in neighboring Ukraine overnight in anticipation of Russian strikes, though it was lifted in the morning.

    Drone incursions have been detected dozens of times since the start of the Russian offensive against Ukraine in 2022, but the latest incident was the first time one had hit a residential building.

    Last September, Romania reported that its airspace was breached by a drone during a Russian attack on neighboring Ukraine. The country also scrambled two F-16 fighter jets at the time.

    Shrey Parikh emerged victorious Thursday in the 98th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. The 14-year-old eighth-grader from Rancho Cucamonga, California, bested a field of eight contenders who had advanced to the finals.

    Shrey and 12-year-old Ishaan Gupta of Jersey City, New Jersey, were the last two spellers standing. The two went to a spell-off to determine the winner. In the spell-off, each had 90 seconds to spell as many words as possible.

    Shrey spelled 32 words correctly, while Ishaan spelled 25.

    The spell-off moves so fast that it’s impossible to tell which word secures the title. But Scripps later announced that the winner was “bromocriptine,” a polypeptide alkaloid that mimics the activity of dopamine.

    “Right now I’m probably the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m just so happy and relieved, and just such a flood of emotions,” Shrey said. “At my school bee last year, I was really dejected and just very upset. It didn’t even sink in until the next day. I had a really tough time, but I’m glad I was able to bounce back.”

    Spellers qualified for Thursday’s finals by advancing through regional bees hosted by sponsors around the country. In order to compete, spellers must not have advanced beyond the eighth grade or be older than 15.
