    By Alex Miller

(Nathan Posner/Anadolu via Getty Images)

(Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)

(Ash Ponders/Bloomberg via Getty Images)

Schumer says Dems will fight voter ID push ‘tooth and nail,’ balks at DHS role in elections

Schumer opposes SAVE America Act despite polling showing 83% of Americans support voter ID requirements

    By Alex Miller
    Fox News

    Published February 15, 2026 3:26pm EST

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., vowed Sunday that Senate Democrats will block the latest GOP-backed effort to require proof of citizenship to vote.

“We will not let it pass in the Senate,” Schumer told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “We are fighting it tooth and nail. It’s an outrageous proposal that is, you know, that shows the sort of political bias of the MAGA right. They don’t want poor people to vote. They don’t want people of color to vote because they often don’t vote for them.”

Schumer’s comments came after Tapper pressed him on his opposition, noting that polling shows roughly 83% of Americans support some form of voter identification. That figure comes from a Pew Research poll published last year that found 71% of Democratic voters surveyed supported presenting an ID to vote.

COLLINS BOOSTS REPUBLICAN VOTER ID EFFORT, BUT WON’T SCRAP FILIBUSTER

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that Democrats wouldn’t accept a funding extension to DHS with just days left until a partial shutdown.(Nathan Posner/Anadolu via Getty Images)

Still, Schumer and most Senate Democrats have criticized the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, which passed the House last week and is expected to face a vote in the Senate.

The bill would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and would establish a system for state election officials to share information with federal authorities to verify voter rolls. It would also allow the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to pursue immigration cases if noncitizens are found listed as eligible voters.

Schumer and his caucus have panned the bill as voter suppression targeting poorer Americans and minority groups.

FETTERMAN SLAMS DEMOCRATS’ ‘JIM CROW 2.0’ VOTER ID RHETORIC AS PARTY UNITY FRACTURES

Sen. John Fetterman bucked his party once more on their messaging against voter ID legislation, arguing that it wasn’t “a radical idea.”(Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)

“What they are proposing in this so-called SAVE Act is like Jim Crow 2.0,” Schumer said. “They make it so hard to get any kind of voter ID that more than 20 million legitimate people, mainly poorer people and people of color, will not be able to vote under this law.”

Without support from Senate Democrats — save for a possible defection from Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa. — the bill is likely to fail.

The only way around that would be eliminating the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold — a move Republicans oppose — or forcing a so-called talking filibuster that could require hours of debate and stall other Senate business.

HARDLINE CONSERVATIVES DOUBLE DOWN TO SAVE THE SAVE ACT

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Secretary Kristi Noem’s assertion of her agency’s involvement in elections a “load of bull.”(Ash Ponders/Bloomberg via Getty Images)

Schumer also pushed back on comments from DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, who earlier this week said elections “may be one of the most important things that we need to make sure we trust, is reliable, and that when it gets to Election Day that we’ve been proactive to make sure that we have the right people voting, electing the right leaders to lead this country.”

The comments come as Senate Democrats and the White House negotiate funding for DHS, which has been shut down since midnight Friday.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP

Part of those negotiations includes Democrats’ demand that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents be kept away from several areas, including schools and polling places.

“That’s a load of bull,” Schumer said. “They show no evidence of voter fraud. They show there’s so little in the country. And to have ICE agents, these thugs, be by the polling places, that just flies in the face of how democracy works, of how we’ve had elections for hundreds of years, very successfully.”

Lindsey Vonn is preparing to leave Italy one week after Winter Olympics crash, says U.S. Ski Team chief

    February 15, 2026 / 11:18 AM EST / CBS/AP

Lindsey Vonn is preparing to return to the United States, the U.S. Ski Team’s chief told The Associated Press on Sunday, saying the champion skier was getting ready to fly back home for further treatment after wiping out in the women’s Olympic downhill competition last weekend.

Sophie Goldschmidt, president and CEO of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, told the AP the team’s medical staff has been coordinating Vonn’s recovery since the crash and subsequent helicopter evacuation at the Milan Cortina Games and would try to accompany her home. Vonn has had multiple surgeries in Italy to repair a complex tibia fracture in her left leg.

“We’re working through all of that at the moment,” Goldschmidt said. “We’ve got a great team around helping her and she’ll go back to the U.S. for further surgeries.”

Spectators tuning in to see Vonn attempt to win a medal at age 41 with a torn ACL in her left knee and a partial titanium replacement in her right knee were thrown into shock when the American standout got hooked on a gate 13 seconds into her run — resulting in a spinning, air-born crash that sent her careening down the Dolomite mountain.

“The impact, the silence, everyone was just in shock. And you could tell it was a really nasty injury,” said Goldschmidt, who was in attendance for the fall. “There’s a lot of danger in doing all sorts of Alpine sports but it gives more of an appreciation for how superhuman these athletes are.

“I mean, putting your body on the line, going at those speeds, the physicality. Sometimes, actually on the broadcast, it’s really hard to get that across,” Goldschmidt added. “Danger sometimes brings fans in and is pretty captivating. We obviously hope we won’t have injuries like that but it is unfortunately part and parcel of our sports.”

Vonn said on Friday that she was expecting to have another surgery for the leg injury, which was slated to happen on Saturday. In a video shared to social media, Vonn told her followers that she could potentially return to the U.S. after that surgery if it went well. At that point, she had already undergone three surgeries since her crash.

But Vonn has no regrets about skiing in the 2026 Olympics.

“When I think back on my crash, I didn’t stand in the starting gate unaware of the potential consequences,” Vonn said in an Instagram post late Saturday. “I knew what I was doing. I chose to take a risk. Every skier in that starting gate took the same risk. Because even if you are the strongest person in the world, the mountain always holds the cards.

“But just because I was ready, that didn’t guarantee me anything. Nothing in life is guaranteed. That’s the gamble of chasing your dreams, you might fall but if you don’t try you’ll never know,” Vonn added.

Goldschmidt visited Vonn at the hospital twice and said, “She’s not in pain. She’s in a stable condition.”

“She took an aggressive line and was all in and it was inches off what could have ended up a very different way,” Goldschmidt said. “But what she’s done for our sports and the sport in general, her being a role model, has gone to a whole new level. You learn often more about people during these tough moments than when they’re winning.”

Trump told Netanyahu he would support Israeli strikes on Iran’s ballistic missile program, sources say

    Updated on: February 15, 2026 / 1:28 PM EST / CBS News

President Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a meeting at Mar-a-Lago in December that the president would support Israeli strikes on Iran’s ballistic missile program if a deal between Washington and Tehran could not be reached, according to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity to discuss national security issues.

Two months later, CBS News has learned that internal discussions between senior figures in the U.S. military and intelligence community have started to contemplate the possibility of supporting a fresh round of Israeli strikes on Iran. American deliberations have focused less on whether Israel could act than on how the United States might assist, including the provision of aerial refueling for Israeli aircraft and the delicate matter of securing overflight permission from countries along the potential route, said two other U.S. officials with knowledge of the matter.

It’s not clear what countries would grant overflight permission for the U.S. to refuel Israeli aircraft for a potential strike. Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have all publicly said they would not allow their airspace to be used for any strikes on Iran or Iranian strikes on any other country.

But the ongoing conversations inside the national security apparatus coincided with a visible show of force from the United States towards Iran. On Thursday, CBS News reported that a second U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford and its flotilla of warships, would be dispatched to the Middle East, joining an already substantial American presence. Four U.S. officials said the carrier strike group is expected to redeploy from the Caribbean, a movement that would place formidable firepower within range of Iran at a moment of heightened strain.

All of it comes as the Trump administration pursues negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear program. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu remains openly skeptical of diplomacy with Iran and flew to Washington last Wednesday for talks with President Trump. Netanyahu released multiple statements insisting that any Iran accord include restrictions on ballistic missiles and funding of proxies in the region, issues that would extend any deal beyond the nuclear program itself.

Iranian officials have signaled a conditional willingness to curb some uranium enrichment in exchange for relief from punishing economic sanctions, but it is unclear what that looks like and talks have yet to produce any written agreement.

The U.S. and Iran are expected to hold a second round of nuclear talks in Geneva on Tuesday in an effort to reach a deal that prevents war.Iranian state media is reporting that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation are on their way to Geneva for the indirect talks, according to the Associated Press.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday that he has “made clear he prefers diplomacy” on Iran, and he confirmed that U.S. envoy Steve Wiktoff and Jared Kushner are traveling “to have important meetings” with Iran.

“We’ll see how that comes out,” he added.

Mr. Trump, speaking at the White House on Friday, framed the carrier deployment as prudent insurance if negotiations between the United States and Iran fail. By shifting additional naval power into the region, Mr. Trump appears intent on sharpening the leverage behind his demands.

Transcript: Rep. Robert Garcia on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” Feb. 15, 2026

    February 15, 2026 / 1:00 PM EST / CBS News

The following is the transcript of the interview with Rep. Robert Garcia, Democrat of California, that aired on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on Feb. 15, 2026.

    *

ED O’KEEFE: Welcome back to Face the Nation. We turn now to the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, California Congressman Robert Garcia, who joins us this morning from Long Beach, where he used to be the mayor. Congressman, good to see you. Thank you for being with us.

REP. ROBERT GARCIA: Sure thing, thank you.

ED O’KEEFE: I want to start real quick because you are on the committee that essentially has oversight of the entire government. You’re Democrats. You don’t have control of the panel. You’ve held some unofficial hearings on ICE operations nationwide. I’m curious if you’re talking to the Republicans at all about doing anything to investigate allegations of wrongdoing of ICE and the Border Patrol as they continue to carry on immigration enforcement operations.

REP. GARCIA: Look, I think it’s just been very recently we actually see more and more Republicans actually speak out and begin to show some level of courage. ICE, CBP, DHS is completely out of control. We have heard, not just in hearings, but certainly in looking at what’s happening across this country and folks talking and telling their stories. We’re talking about U.S, citizens that are being shot. We’re talking about U.S. veterans that are being detained for no reason. Children that are being deported as young as four or five years old, sending to detention in other cases, as we’ve seen. And so I think you’re beginning to see some Republicans actually show concern. But, right now, DHS is causing terror across this country, and Donald Trump has turned not just DHS, but ICE specifically, which we now know is larger than it’s ever been, into his own personal police force.

ED O’KEEFE: But you know of no Republican committee chairman currently planning to investigate all these allegations, right? Is that what you’re saying?

REP. GARCIA: Oh, there’s no chairmen out there that have come out publicly. Now, you begin to hear some Republicans show some concern, but they need to show more courage. I mean, Mike Johnson, at the end of the day, does whatever Donald Trump wants him to do–

    ED O’KEEFE: –Yeah–

REP. GARCIA: –and Republicans need to go out there and start speaking the truth of what’s happening on the street.

ED O’KEEFE: So the big reason I wanted to speak with you this morning is, of course, you’re now trying to conduct a pretty aggressive review of the Epstein documents, as they’ve now been released by the Justice Department. There have been about three and a half million documents released, and based on a CBS News review, so far there doesn’t appear to be enough evidence to criminally charge anyone else. Saturday night, the Department of Justice released this legally required list of all government officials and politically exposed persons in the Epstein files. More than 300 names on the list which they acknowledge are people who are here listed in a wide variety of contexts. DOJ says they’re doing this ask because it was part of the law. It lists everyone from Beyonce to Joe Biden, George W. Bush, Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, Barack Obama, Mike Pence, the Trumps, Mark Zuckerberg, among others, because they came up in one way or another in the documents. A few questions, why was this asked for? And are you aware yet of any names being not on this list that should be on the list?

REP. GARCIA: We’re reviewing that list, of course, but let’s, let’s be really clear, this is a massive cover up being led by the White House and the DOJ. The fact that 50%, half of the Epstein files have not been released to the public and to the Congress, and of those that have been released, the actual files that have been out in the public or that we’ve seen, they’re overly redacted. Many of the survivors and victims, their names are actually appearing with where there’s no protection for the survivors. Yet, the names of billionaires, the names of folks that could be co-conspirators that helped fund Jeffrey Epstein, that could have actually been involved in the terror and rape, as we know, abuse of women and children, some of those names continue to be redacted and protected. Why won’t the DOJ actually follow the law? Not just of what was passed by Congress but the subpoena that was put in place by the Oversight Committee during the summer. And so this continues to be a cover up, and the American public understands that they continue to hide and protect and deflect. Why does Donald Trump, the president continue to, in our opinion, to protect these powerful men? We’re not going to stop until we get justice for the survivors.

ED O’KEEFE: The Justice Department says they released everything they can, and the rest are protected by attorney privilege, contain victim information or contain child sexual assault material. I know there’s been a back and forth in recent days about a handful of names that were redacted, should have been unredacted. Turns out, they didn’t have anything to do with it. They just happened to be in an event or in a photo with Jeffrey Epstein, basically. But I want to ask you about your investigation, a congressional investigation. You told the attorney general on Friday, it would take more than seven years for members to check the redactions on those three million pages, which sounds unrealistic, but is it your intent to review all of those documents to see what other information is there? What other names are either mentioned or missing?

REP. GARCIA: Absolutely. Look, we have a great team on the committee that’s reviewing, right now, every single document, going through all the files that are available to the public, looking at redactions, trying to understand and piecing together an investigation. And it’s not just the documents. We’re interviewing survivors. We’re talking to key witnesses.

    ED O’KEEFE: Right.

REP. GARCIA: We’re going to be holding hearings in the future as well. So all of that is part of this, but at the end of the day, they have not given us all the documents. So until we actually get the full set of files, this is not going to be a complete investigation, and the cover up that’s being led by the White House and Pam Bondi is continuing, and the American public sees this, and so they need to release all of the files.

ED O’KEEFE: All right. Well, working with what you’ve got so far, what are you looking for specifically? Are there names? Are there events? Are there situations to clarify that they’ve been released or that they’re out there? What is it you’re looking for?

REP. GARCIA: Look, there’s a variety of things. Number one is we want to ensure that all the names of the men that either were co-conspirators, those that themselves terrorized and brutalized women and children, those people need to be exposed. That work has begun. An additional piece of this is who is financing Jeffrey Epstein? So, for example, this upcoming week, we’ll be interviewing Les Wexner, who is likely have been the single largest benefactor in providing financial support to Jeffrey Epstein. Where did he get all of his money and for what? And where was that money going? That is another critical part of this investigation. We’ve subpoenaed also the bank records, so we’re going through all those and that information is critical to our investigation. And then, of course, is who was involved in the trafficking of girls and women? It wasn’t just Ghislaine Maxwell. Why were there so many women being attacked in places across the country, whether it was New York, but also Palm Beach. You look at Mar-a-Lago, why was Mar-a-Lago a location where women continue to be trafficked from? So these are questions that we need to ask. We have questions for, for President Trump. And the broader- I think the broader issue here is why wasn’t this investigated when these, when these, when these accusations and these stories actually were heard by the FBI years ago? Where was the investigation? Where was the DOJ? And this, by the way, is an issue not just in Republican administrations but also ones led by Democrats. We have to get answers.

ED O’KEEFE: Yeah. You mentioned Wexner, who you’re interviewing this coming week. Have you heard back yet from the man formerly known as Prince Andrew?

REP. GARCIA: We have not, but we absolutely have sent letters. We want to actually talk to Prince Andrew And it’s not just Prince And- former Prince Andrew.

    ED O’KEEFE: Right.

REP. GARCIA: I mean, what’s happening right now across- over in the UK is pretty stunning, and it’s actually a show of what is- what happens when the government listens to the public.

    ED O’KEEFE: Sure.

REP. GARCIA: There are actually things happening to those have been involved. That example, that’s happening over there and in other parts of the world, needs to happen in our country, and the fact that the White House continues to cover up for these files and for these men, I think, is shameful. Release all the files today, and last thing, they keep claiming that, oh, well, there is a, you know, there’s attorney-client privilege or there’s interagency communication we can’t put out to the public. That might be true in the Epstein Transparency Act, but it’s not true in the subpoena that asked for the exact same documents that was passed last July and August. And so there is no reason why Congress shouldn’t have all of the documents in front of us right now.

ED O’KEEFE: Let me ask you about a few more specific names. I’ve heard about the cover up that you’re alleging by the White House. Let’s work through some of these names. Peter Mandelson, the former British ambassador to the U.S. You heard back from him yet?

REP. GARCIA: We have not, but we absolutely want to talk to him.

    (CROSSTALK)

ED O’KEEFE: Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. He had said in an interview last year he hadn’t seen Howard Lutnick in years. Turns out, he went to see his island off the U.S. Virgin Islands with his family back in 2012, and he had business interests with him in 2014. Are you working with Republican Chairman Jim Comer to bring Howard Lutnick in for questioning?

REP. GARCIA: We have asked Jamie Comer to bring in Howard Lutnick, and we have yet no, had no response. Not only did he visit the island, he had tons of communication with Jeffrey Epstein after it was already known that Jeffrey Epstein was essentially convicted for preying on children. So it is, it is shameful that he’s actually in our government. He should not be the Commerce Secretary. He should come talk to the Oversight Committee.

ED O’KEEFE: The Oversight Committee also voted last month to hold Bill and Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress for failing to show up for similar testimony. They’re now scheduled to appear later this month for closed door testimony. What’s the point of having them come in?

REP. GARCIA: Look, we’ve said from day one that we’re willing to talk to anybody, whether they’re Republicans or Democrats, whoever they are, whatever, how powerful they are. If you have information about Jeffrey Epstein, we want to talk to you. We’ve been saying that about, about President Clinton for a while. I’m glad that he’s coming in. Look, the one thing I’ll say, I think both President Clinton and Secretary Clinton have also added that they would like those hearings to be public.

    ED O’KEEFE: Right.

REP. GARCIA: That’s something that we absolutely support. We have questions for, for President Clinton. We’ll be asking those in New York in the weeks ahead, as you know, but there’s a lot of people that we need to speak with, and the more that we can have these conversations in public, I think it’s better for the American people. It’s what they want to see, and they want to understand what was the truth about Epstein, who he knew, where he got his money from and why has there been a constant focus on covering up his crimes by so many in government?

ED O’KEEFE: Congressman Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, thank you for spending part of Sunday with us. We appreciate it, and we’ll be right back.

Trump border czar dismisses Democratic demands to reform ICE

    February 15, 2026 4:31 PM UTC / Reuters

WASHINGTON, Feb 15 (Reuters) – White House border czar Tom Homan on Sunday brushed off Democratic demands to reform ICE amid mounting backlash over the agency’s tactics and a partisan deadlock over homeland security funding.

Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers doubled down on their calls for changes to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, even as Republicans accused them of grandstanding by refusing to back a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security.

    • On CBS News’ “Face the Nation” program, Homan called Democratic legislators’ ICE demands “unreasonable” while stressing that he personally was not part of the discussions over a bill to fund Homeland Security in exchange for reforming ICE.
    • Democrats sent a list of 10 demands to the top Republican lawmakers in Congress earlier this month that included ICE halting racial profiling in its policing, prohibiting masks and stopping officers from entering private homes without a judicial warrant.
    • Homan denied that ICE officers engage in racial profiling, saying they make stops based on “reasonable suspicion.” A Supreme Court ruling last year allowed officers to use factors such as brown skin or speaking Spanish as grounds for a stop.
    • Homan said ICE officers need masks to hide their identities for protection although opponents note that the vast majority of U.S. law enforcement officers work without them.
    • DHS entered a partial shutdown on Saturday, but largely continues to operate since most of its functions are deemed essential.
    • On “Fox News Sunday,” U.S. Senator Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat, credited “outcry from Americans” for convincing the White House to negotiate over ICE now even though DHS still has funding for some time.
    • Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma told CNN’s “State of the Union” that Democrats are engaging in “political theater” and are not negotiating in good faith.
    • Talks between Democrats and Republicans could remain stalled as both chambers of Congress will be on break this week.

Sen. Thom Tillis says Stephen Miller, Kristi Noem are “not taking care of” Trump’s legacy

    Updated on: February 15, 2026 / 2:19 PM EST / CBS News

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina said Sunday that two of President Trump’s top advisers, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, “are not taking care of” Mr. Trump’s “legacy” on immigration and border security.

“You’ve heard me talk about Stephen Miller, you know my opinion about Kristi Noem,” Tillis told Ed O’Keefe on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.” “These are people that don’t look around corners and are not taking care of this president’s legacy.”

Tillis, who is not running for reelection in 2026, said he believed that Republicans could hold onto its majority in the Senate. But he admitted that it could be more difficult for Republicans to keep a majority in the House.

“I have questions about the House, and some of that comes from what I believe may have been a little bit of overreach with respect to redistricting,” he said. Republicans kicked off mid-decade redistricting in Texas to net up to five seats for Republicans at the behest of Mr. Trump, but Democrats in other states responded to net more seats for themselves, making the outcome unlikely.

But Tillis said his “beef” about the GOP’s chances in the midterms “almost always relates to what I consider to be how things are being done.”

Tillis praised the president’s national security policy concerning NATO and said he intends to shield his legacy.

“And if I have to speak bluntly, that’s what I’m going to do in my remaining time in the Senate,” Tillis said.

Miller and Noem have faced scrutiny following the shooting deaths of two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, last month by immigration agents amid the Trump administration’s crackdown in Minneapolis. Dubbed Operation Metro Surge, immigration enforcement agents have targeted undocumented immigrants in the Minneapolis area, but White House border czar Tom Homan announced Thursday that the controversial operation will conclude by next week.

Tillis has been critical of Miller and Noem and called them “amateurs.” He was the first Republican to publicly demand Noem’s resignation, accusing her of taking the administration “into the ground” on the issue of immigration that Republicans “should own.”

“But they have destroyed that for Republicans, something that got the president elected,” Tillis earlier told reporters on Capitol Hill. “They have destroyed it through their incompetence.”

But Tillis has not said whether he would vote to impeach Noem, which would require a two-thirds vote in the Senate. 187 House Democrats have cosponsored the impeachment resolution against Noem, but it is unlikely to clear a simple majority.
