(iStock)

President Donald Trump said he will direct the release of government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life and unidentified aerial phenomena, saying there is “tremendous interest” in the issue following remarks by former President Barack Obama.

Trump said he would instruct War Secretary Pete Hegseth and other relevant departments and agencies to begin identifying and declassifying records tied to unidentified aerial phenomena, UFOs and potential extraterrestrial life, framing the move as a response to heightened public curiosity.

“Based on the tremendous interest shown, I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

Trump said aboard Air Force One that Obama revealed classified information by suggesting aliens are real, calling the remarks a “big mistake” and accusing Obama of disclosing secrets about possible non-human visitors to Earth.

Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked Trump about Obama’s claim during a gaggle aboard Air Force One, pressing the current sitting president on whether he has seen evidence of non-human visitors on Earth.

“He gave classified information. He’s not supposed to be doing that,” Trump said. “I don’t know if they’re real or not. I can tell you, he gave classified information. He’s not supposed to be doing that – he made a big mistake. He took it out of classified information.”

Former President Barack Obama appeared on Brian Tyler Cohen’s podcast Saturday, where he was asked point-blank whether aliens are real.

“They’re real, but I haven’t seen them,” Obama said.

The 44th president also dismissed the idea that extraterrestrials are being held at Nevada’s Area 51, saying there is no secret underground facility “unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States.”

After his comments sparked buzz online, Obama sought to clarify his remarks on Instagram.

“I was trying to stick with the spirit of the speed round, but since it’s gotten attention, let me clarify,” he wrote. “Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there. But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we’ve been visited by aliens are low, and I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!”

Cohen also asked what Obama’s first question was after taking office, prompting another alien reference.

“Uh, where are the aliens?” Obama joked.

Saturday’s appearance was not the first time Obama addressed the topic. During a 2021 interview on “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” he said that after entering office, he looked into whether aliens were being studied in a secret lab and was told they were not.

Still, Obama noted that officials are investigating aircraft exhibiting unusual flight patterns.

“There is footage and records of objects in the skies that we don’t know exactly what they are,” he said. “We can’t explain how they moved, their trajectory. They did not have an easily explainable pattern. I think people still take seriously trying to investigate and figure out what that is.”

Doocy later asked President Joe Biden about Obama’s remarks, referencing unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs.

“What do you think that it is?” Doocy asked.

“I would ask (Obama) again,” Biden responded.

Interest in UAPs has intensified in recent years, drawing attention from federal lawmakers and defense officials. Congress passed the Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Disclosure Act in 2023, and the Department of Defense established the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office to further examine such incidents.

Iran dangles investment proposals as off-ramp from Trump’s gunboat diplomacy

    February 19, 2026 / 9:56 PM EST / CBS News

The two rounds of indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran have produced unique proposals addressing Iran’s nuclear program — its enrichment capabilities and supply of highly enriched uranium — and how to make a deal that’s economically beneficial to both countries, diplomatic sources tell CBS News.

While Tehran seeks sanctions relief from the U.S., a diplomatic source with knowledge of the Oman-mediated negotiations told CBS News that Iran has also indicated it may be willing to purchase American aircraft and to offer possible access to oil and gas fields and joint investment opportunities.

Two regional officials told CBS News that diplomats had advised U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff to separate Iran’s nuclear program from other issues, like Tehran’s support for militias that target U.S. interests and the regime’s ballistic missile supply. The two officials said Witkoff seemed to embrace the idea of handling those topics in a separate diplomatic track with regional actors.

But a deal that only addresses Iran’s nuclear program is unacceptable to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has publicly declared that an agreement must also address both Iran’s ballistic missile supply and its regionally destabilizing militias.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also described a meaningful deal as one that would include those two issues, and he’s planning to visit Israel at the end of the month for talks about Iran.

Mr. Trump has been less explicit about the contours of a deal, though he has set one bright red line for the indirect diplomatic talks with Iran: no nuclear weapons. Iran has long claimed it is not seeking a weapon. The rest of the president’s demands of Tehran, which are not related to its nuclear program, are less distinct and reveal some flexibility as he weighs whether to militarily strike Iran or await an expected offer from Tehran in the coming days.

“We do have some work to do with Iran. They can’t have nuclear weapons. Very simple. You can’t have peace in the Middle East if they have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said on Tuesday at the inaugural event in Washington, D.C., for his Board of Peace.

He acknowledged Thursday that he’s nearing a decision point within the next 10-15 days, and prefers diplomacy to military strikes against Iran. Diplomats said the deadline may be shorter, noting that next Tuesday, on Feb. 24, the president delivers a State of the Union address to Congress and the nation.

CBS News has also previously reported that American and Israeli officials have been discussing joint operations to strike Iran’s ballistic missile supply. A regional official told CBS that Israel wants to maintain the military superiority in the region it gained after the 12-day war in June, which is why it is eager to destroy Iran’s ballistic missile program. But if any such strikes were conducted, however limited in scope, they would be sure to drive Iran away from the negotiating table, the official said. This consideration may not deter the U.S. from acting, however.

“The president made clear to Israel that he recognizes Iran’s missile program is a severe threat to Israel and Jerusalem reserves the right to destroy that program. Iran has actively reconstituted its missile supply with assistance from China,” FDD’s Mark Dubowitz told CBS News.

The ongoing nuclear talks are a tacit acknowledgement that Iran’s nuclear ambitions may not have been decimated by American B-2 bombers and Tomahawk missiles during Operation Midnight Hammer last summer, despite the president’s claim of “total obliteration.”

Two regional officials told CBS News that the current diplomacy being encouraged by Arab states as well as Turkey does not involve regime change. As one Mideast official put it, the issue is “changing the policies of the regime” and not the regime itself. But nodding to Iran hawks in Congress, the same official said there is a “strong current in America that has interest in regime change in Iran.”

U.S. allies in the region, including Saudi Arabia, UAE and Jordan, have said they oppose any use of their territory for a military operation and are supporting diplomacy. There are roughly 40,000 U.S. troops in the Mideast and many are based in those countries. A retaliatory strike by Iran could put them in danger.

Turkey engaged in an earlier attempt to prod Iran to consider negotiating with the Trump representatives, despite their past negative experiences, in particular, Mr. Trump’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear accord known as the JCPOA, as well as his more recent decision last summer to carry out strikes on three of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Mr. Trump was briefed Wednesday about the latest developments on Iran, including the diplomatic talks in Geneva conducted Tuesday by his son-in-law Jared Kushner and Witkoff. Those indirect talks were held with veteran Iranian diplomat Abbas Aragchi, with assistance from Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi. Rafael Grossi, who runs the UN nuclear watchdog that has been shut out of conducting regular inspections of Iran’s facilities, was also consulted.

Exclusive: FBI plans to reduce vetting of some applying to be agents, sources say

    February 19, 2026 9:14 PM UTC / Reuters

By Jana Winter and Andrew Goudsward

WASHINGTON, Feb 19 (Reuters) – The FBI plans to make it easier for existing employees to become agents, removing two long-standing steps in vetting applicants as the bureau faces a staffing crunch under President Donald Trump’s administration, according to two people familiar with the move.

FBI Director Kash Patel is expected to eliminate a requirement that support staff already working in the FBI who apply to become special agents sit for an interview and complete a writing assessment.

Instead, existing employees who pass a written exam through an online portal will be able to go directly to the FBI academy in Quantico, Virginia for new agent training, according to Jeff Crocker, a retired FBI supervisory special agent and another person briefed on the changes, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter.

Crocker and the other person said the moves would lower the FBI’s recruiting standards, given that they will eliminate vetting steps during which applicants are assessed on their life experiences, public speaking abilities and critical thinking skills. The applicants are questioned by a panel of three agents who undergo training on how to screen candidates, according to Crocker, who vetted special agent applicants during his more than 20-year career in the FBI.

The previously unreported changes have not yet been announced widely within the FBI, said this person and Crocker.

An FBI spokesperson, Ben Williamson, did not dispute the process would be changed but denied that the bureau is

Trump claims Obama revealed classified information when he said aliens are real

February 19, 2026 9:49 PM UTC / Reuters / By Trevor Hunnicutt and Ryan Patrick Jones

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, Feb 19 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Thursday accused former President Barack Obama of disclosing classified information when he recently said that aliens were real, but Trump did not cite any evidence to support the allegation.

“He took it out of classified information … He’s not supposed to be doing that,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One while traveling to Georgia. “He made a big mistake.”

During an interview with podcast host Brian Tyler Cohen released on Saturday, Obama was asked if aliens are real.

“They’re real, but I haven’t seen them, and they’re not being kept in … Area 51. There’s no underground facility unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States,” Obama said.

Area 51 is a classified Air Force facility in Nevada that fringe theorists have speculated holds alien bodies and a crashed spaceship. CIA archives released in 2013 said it was a test site for top-secret spy planes.

There was no indication in his remarks that the former president relied on classified information.

“I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!” Obama said in an Instagram post on Sunday.

In the post, Obama explained his belief that aliens exist by saying the statistical odds of life beyond Earth were high because the universe is so vast. He added that the chances of extraterrestrial life visiting Earth were low given the distance.

On Thursday, Trump said, “I don’t know if they’re real or not” when asked whether he had seen evidence that aliens exist.

The White House said it had nothing to add to the president’s comments. Obama’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Pentagon in recent years undertook a push to investigate reports of unidentified flying objects, and senior military leaders said in 2022 they found no evidence to suggest that aliens have visited Earth or crash-landed here.

A 2024 Pentagon report said U.S. government investigations since the end of World War Two have found no evidence of extraterrestrial technology and most sightings were misidentified ordinary objects and phenomena.

    当各国领导人围拢合影时,活动的背景音乐定下了基调,詹姆斯·布朗1966年的歌曲《这是男人的世界》(It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World)在头顶播放。

Trump mixes diplomacy and flattery at peace board meeting

February 19, 2026 9:47 PM UTC / Reuters / By Bo Erickson, Trevor Hunnicutt and Gram Slattery

WASHINGTON, Feb 19 (Reuters) – World leaders who accepted the invitation of President Donald Trump to join his new peace board were greeted in Washington on Thursday with a mix of fanfare and personal flattery.

While the U.S. president has been chummy with world leaders in the past, he has typically leaned in to a good-cop-bad-cop routine, alternating between praise and threats as his interests dictate. On Thursday, those in attendance saw Trump at his most convivial.

There was no hint of the criticized human-rights records of some attendees. It was only those who did not attend the inaugural meeting of the board in Washington who received an ominous warning: “You can’t play cute with me,” Trump said.

A number of key U.S. allies have declined to join the forum set up by Trump in September for Gaza reconstruction but which he hopes can become a global conflict-resolution body. Critics say it risks interfering with the work of the United Nations.

As leaders huddled for a group photo, the event’s soundtrack set the tone, as James Brown’s 1966 song, “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” blared overhead.

Gaza is the board’s first priority, but the Middle East conflict was not discussed in detail by Trump until 25 minutes into his welcome speech, as he focused first on complimenting the world leaders on the event stage, rating some of them on their good looks, wealth and strength.

Trump recited the names of the world leaders in attendance – as well as FIFA President Gianni Infantino – who were all seated on both sides of him on stage, some with red MAGA hats in front of them on the table.

“President (Santiago) Pena of Paraguay is here,” Trump said, pointing out the 47-year-old leader, “Young handsome guy. It’s always nice to be young and handsome. Doesn’t mean we have to like you. I don’t like young, handsome men. Women I like. Men, I don’t have any interest.”

Nonetheless, his interest in the male physique was apparent. At one point, he told the crowd to look at the “tough” face of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

Trump also told stories in which he portrayed himself as having coerced leaders into doing what he wanted. He told the crowd how he had used threats of tariffs to pressure some countries, such as India and Pakistan, into ending conflicts. India has firmly rejected this assertion.

    BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE

The president suggested that his new board could overtake the United Nations in prominence.

“The Board of Peace is going to almost be looking over the United Nations … they need help,” Trump said, digressing to recount his visit last year when he and first lady Melania Trump were stuck on an escalator in the UN headquarters in New York.

“I was lucky my movie-star first lady was in front of me, because I put my hand on a certain part of her body,” Trump said of the escalator incident.

In total, the president used the term “beautiful” at least 14 times in his speech to praise his administration’s work and the event space, which was named after him.

He said it was Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s idea to “surprise” him by renaming the U.S. Institute of Peace, where Thursday’s event was held, in his honor.

“I didn’t know the surprise,” Trump said, “I thought maybe they were going to give me a lot of money or something, maybe cash.”
