FIRST ON FOX: The father and brother of a young woman killed by an illegal immigrant will be in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday night watching President Donald Trump deliver his State of the Union address, after his administration helped track down the man who ended the woman’s life.

Sarah Root, a 21-year-old Iowa native, was killed in Nebraska hours after she graduated from Bellevue University by a drunk driver whose blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit.

The man, Eswin Mejia, was in the U.S. illegally at the time of the incident in January 2016. He was arrested and released on bond the following month and fled the country, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Then-candidate Trump was critical of the Obama administration’s handling of the case.

The Trump administration later tracked Mejia down in Honduras and extradited him to the U.S. in March 2025. He was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.

Sarah Root’s father and brother will attend in-person as Trump delivers his primetime address to Congress on Tuesday evening, thanks to an invitation from Rep. Randy Feenstra, R-Iowa.

“I think that the message it sends is that, under President Trump, that we will find you. I mean, if you’re an illegal criminal in this state or in this country, we will find you, and you will get deported, or you will be prosecuted. I think that is the message loud and clear,” Feenstra told Fox News Digital.

[EXCLUSIVE: 17,500 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARRESTED UNDER LAKEN RILEY ACT IN TRUMP’S SECOND TERM]

He said Sarah Root’s father, Scott Root, was present at the White House when Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law last year.

The anti-illegal immigrant bill also included an amendment named after Sarah Root that would require Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal immigrants charged with seriously injuring or killing someone.

“Scott was at the White House with me during the signing of the bill. And he got to know President Trump, so now to be there at the State of the Union — that is really, really a big deal,” Feenstra said.

Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration has been a primary focus of his administration, after his criticism of how the issue was handled by former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Feb 23 (Reuters) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Principal Deputy Director Ralph Abraham has stepped down, the agency said on Monday, announcing the exit of its second top official this month.

The CDC, which is temporarily being run by Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, said the departure was effective immediately and attributed it to unforeseen family obligations. It did not comment on who would replace Abraham.

His exit follows that of Jim O’Neill, who was acting CDC director since August in addition to him functioning as Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Abraham, second in command at the agency, started at the CDC on January 5 and was most recently Surgeon General of the state of Louisiana where he led a move to stop promotion of mass vaccination and criticized the COVID shots.

The CDC has been hit by budget cuts, staff losses and a series of controversies under Health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime vaccine skeptic who fired the director he had appointed, Susan Monarez.

Monarez was removed in August after she resisted changes to vaccine policy advanced by Kennedy that she believed contradicted scientific evidence.

Her departure triggered resignations from four senior officials, who cited anti-vaccine policies and misinformation pushed by Kennedy.

Last week, U.S. National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Bhattacharya stepped as acting director of the agency. Trump administration sources have said the moves are part of positioning ahead of November elections.

A U.S. vaccine advisory committee meeting scheduled for later this month by the CDC will not be held, with no new dates announced, Reuters reported last week.

    By Eric Mack

Trump envoy rebukes Greenland leader for rejecting hospital ship proposal

Greenland seizes on healthcare attack in rejecting Trump offer

    By Eric Mack
    Fox News

    Published February 23, 2026 9:01am EST

Greenland’s rejection of President Donald Trump sending a U.S. military hospital ship has touched off a private-public healthcare debate amid ongoing diplomatic talks about Arctic security.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Sunday turned down Trump’s offer, and now Trump’s special envoy to Greenland, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, has weighed in.

“Shame on Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen!” Landry wrote in response to a Fox News report on Nielsen’s objection. “President Donald J. Trump and America care. After speaking to many Greenlanders about the day to day problems they face, one issue stood out — healthcare.”

Greenland has sought more self-governance from Denmark under the Self Government Act in 2009 to take more local authority under home rule, but Danish officials’ instant rejection of Trump’s offer is aligned with Greenland’s own rejection that came later Sunday.

“President Trump’s idea of [sending an American hospital ship] here to Greenland has been noted,” Nielsen wrote in a translated Facebook post. “But we have a public healthcare system where treatment is free for citizens.

    “It is a deliberate choice.”

Greenland remains open to dialogue and cooperation with the U.S., with a caveat, according to Nielsen.

“But talk to us instead of just making more or less random outbursts on social media,” Nielsen said in his own public Facebook protestation.

Greenland’s “free for citizens” care is not sufficient, Landry argued in his Facebook response posted to his campaign’s page.

“Many villages and small towns lack basic services that Americans often take for granted,” Landry’s post continued. “Small settlements are without permanent doctors, diagnostic tools, or specialist care – forcing residents to travel great distances for vital treatments that should be available at home.”

The healthcare issue underlies the overreaching Trump hopes to annex Greenland to secure the strategic Arctic region from Russian and Chinese designs, calling it a vital issue for “national security” for both the U.S. and the NATO alliance.

“A [healthy Greenland] is vital for America’s national security,” Landry’s post concluded. “America is committed to defending Greenland, and that begins by ensuring its people are defended against basic illnesses and ailments.

“These missions matter because health is inseparable from security. America’s commitment to defending Greenland must begin with ensuring its people are healthy.”

The recent dust-up came after Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command evacuated a crew member who required urgent medical treatment from a [U.S. submarine] in Greenlandic waters, seven nautical miles outside of Greenland’s capital of Nuuk.

“Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there,” Trump wrote Saturday night on Truth Social. “It’s on the way!!!”

That post sparked objections from both Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Sunday.

“The Greenlandic population receives the healthcare it needs,” Poulsen told Danish broadcaster DR, according to Reuters. “They receive it either in Greenland, or, if they require specialized treatment, they receive it in Denmark.

“So it’s not as if there’s a need for a special healthcare initiative in Greenland.”

Frederiksen spun the Trump offer into a political debate on public healthcare.

“Am happy to live in a country where there is free and equal access to health for all,” Frederiksen wrote in a translated post, sharing a Democrat attack point on Trump’s Republican Party’s struggles to reform what Trump has rebuked as a “failure” of Obamacare. “Where it’s not insurances and wealth that determine whether you get proper treatment. You have the same approach in Greenland.”

The U.S. Navy has two [hospital ships], the Mercy and the Comfort. Both were last docked in Alabama for repairs, according to Reuters.

Judge permanently blocks release of Jack Smith’s report on Trump classified documents case

    February 23, 2026 / 10:20 AM EST / CBS News

Washington — A federal judge on Monday permanently blocked the Justice Department from releasing the portion of former special counsel Jack Smith’s report that details his investigation into President Trump’s alleged mishandling of sensitive government documents and alleged obstruction of the federal probe.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon granted requests from Mr. Trump and two of his former co-defendants in the case, Walt Nauta and Carlos de Oliveira, to issue an order prohibiting the release of the second volume of Smith’s report. The order bars Attorney General Pam Bondi or her successors from releasing or sharing that portion of the final report.

Bondi had already determined that the report’s second volume shouldn’t be released to the public, in part because of questions surrounding the legality of Smith’s appointment as special counsel. Cannon, who was overseeing the prosecution of Mr. Trump in the documents case, ruled in July 2024 that Smith was unlawfully appointed special counsel and dismissed the charges against the president.

Smith had appealed that decision, but the case ultimately ended after Mr. Trump won a second term in the White House.

“Special Counsel Smith, acting without lawful authority, obtained an indictment in this action and initiated proceedings that resulted in a final order of dismissal of all charges. As a result, the former defendants in this case, like any other defendant in this situation, still enjoy the presumption of innocence held sacrosanct in our constitutional order,” Cannon wrote in her decision. “For obvious reasons, the Court need not take actions in contravention of that protection absent a statutory or other lawful directive to do so.”

Cannon, who was appointed to the U.S. district court in South Florida by Mr. Trump during his first term, also wrote that the second volume contains “voluminous discovery” that remains subject to a protective order issued during the early stages of the case.

She said that allowing the release of the report would lead to large amounts of material related to the case becoming public.

“Moreover, while it is true that former special counsels have released final reports at the conclusion of their work, it appears they have done so either after electing not to bring charges at all or after adjudications of guilt by plea or trial,” Cannon continued. “The Court strains to find a situation in which a former special counsel has released a report after initiating criminal charges that did not result in a finding of guilt, at least not in a situation like this one, where the defendants contested the charges from the outset and still proclaim their innocence.”

Without Cannon’s order, Smith’s report was set to become public on Tuesday.

Kendra Wharton, one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers, said the judge “properly ruled that the broad disclosure of protected grand jury testimony and discovery materials related to a dismissed criminal case, along with the publication of opinions and unproven accusations by an unconstitutional prosecutor, has no place in the American judicial system. Judge Cannon’s courage and judicial resolve on these important due process issues should be recognized and taught in law school classrooms across America.”

A spokesperson for Smith declined to comment. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Trump and his personal legal team asked Cannon last month to issue an order that would block “current, former and future” Justice Department officials from ever releasing the report.

The Justice Department backed Mr. Trump’s request, agreeing that Smith’s second report “should not be released outside of the Department of Justice.”

“The potential, improper release of Volume II would constitute an irreversible violation of this Court’s constitutional rulings in the underlying criminal action and of bedrock principles of the separation of powers,” Mr. Trump’s attorneys argued.

Justice Department lawyers separately claimed Smith’s investigation was “unlawful from its inception.”

“Smith not only weaponized the Department of Justice against a leading presidential candidate in pursuit of an antidemocratic end, but he did so without legal authority and while targeting constitutionally protected activity,” they wrote.

Prosecutors continued: “Put simply, Smith’s tenure was marked by illegality and impropriety, and under no circumstance should his work product be given the full weight and authority of this Department,” adding that Bondi has marked the report “an internal deliberative communication that is privileged and confidential and should not be released outside the Department of Justice.”

Smith brought two criminal cases against Mr. Trump in 2023. The first stemmed from an alleged effort to subvert the transfer of power after the 2020 presidential election, and the second involved the president’s alleged mishandling of sensitive government documents after the end of his first term. Mr. Trump denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Both cases came to an end after Mr. Trump won the presidency again. Smith resigned before Mr. Trump was sworn in for a second term, but before leaving his post, he submitted a two-volume report detailing his investigations to then-Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The report quickly became the focus of legal wrangling. Mr. Trump’s two co-defendants in the documents case, Nauta and de Oliveira, attempted to block the release of a portion of Smith’s report involving the investigation into the 2020 election.

Their efforts, however, were unsuccessful, and that volume was made public days before Mr. Trump’s second inauguration. But the second volume has remained out of the public’s view.

Garland had kept that part of the report secret because of ongoing legal proceedings involving Nauta and de Oliveira. But a federal appeals court granted a Justice Department request to drop the case against them last February, bringing it to an end.

Still, Cannon had issued an order last January barring the release of the second volume. The Justice Department, Nauta and de Oliveira said in a court filing last March that “under no circumstances should the court order the release of” the second volume of Smith’s report.

Judge Aileen Cannon bars the release of special counsel report on Trump’s handling of classified documents

Special counsel Jack Smith’s final report on Donald Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified records and obstruction of justice at Mar-a-Lago after his first term will not be released, a Trump-appointed judge in Florida ruled Monday.

The decision by US District Judge Aileen Cannon, who threw out the case Smith brought against the president before he was re-elected, is a major win in Trump’s efforts to keep the special counsel’s findings forever hidden from public view.

Smith had turned over his final, two-volume report to then-Attorney General Merrick Garland before he left his post in early 2025. The first part of the report, which detailed Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, was released before Trump returned to the White House. But a legal fight waged by Trump and his co-defendants in the case kept the second part of that report under seal.

Cannon said in her 15-page ruling that “it is certainly not customary” for a prosecutor whose case was thrown out to later be allowed to “publicly disseminate large swaths of discovery generated in the case.”

“The Court strains to find a situation in which a former special counsel has released a report after initiating criminal charges that did not result in a finding of guilt, at least not in a situation like this one, where the defendants contested the charges from the outset and still proclaim their innocence,” she wrote.

Cannon, who concluded in 2024 that Smith was unlawfully serving as special counsel, went on to chide him for even writing the report in the first place, saying it violated her earlier decisions putting an end to the work of his office on the classified documents matter.

“The Court need not countenance this brazen stratagem or effectively perpetuate the Special Counsel’s breach of this Court’s own order,” she wrote.

Cannon declined a request from two of Trump’s former co-defendants in the case to order the report to be destroyed.

Transparency around Smith’s final report on the South Florida federal case against Trump and two of his employees, called Volume II, is still being tested in appeals brought by public transparency groups.
