Trump hails ‘turnaround for the ages’ in record-long SOTU packed with wins and warnings

    Published February 24, 2026 11:40pm EST | Fox News

America has made a “turnaround for the ages,” President Donald Trump celebrated from the U.S. Congress Tuesday evening as he delivered his first State of the Union address for his second term.

“After just one year, I can say with dignity and pride that we have achieved a transformation like no one has ever seen before,” Trump declared from the dais Tuesday evening.

Trump delivered a lengthy address that broke records as the longest in recent history, as the president celebrated snuffing out diversity, equity and inclusion policies, securing the border, unleashing U.S. energy, and most notably, bolstering the economy and aiding everyday Americans.

Trump’s speech focused on how his administration turned a new page on a stagnant economy under the Biden administration that saw inflation skyrocket to 40-year highs, pointing to savings in the one “big, beautiful bill” for working families, such as no tax on tips or overtime.

Trump pointed to one invited guest of the speech, a homeschooling mom and waitress whose family has benefited from Trump’s tax plans.

“I met Megan Hemhauser, a devoted mom who homeschools her children,” Trump said during his speech. “Waiting tables at night as her husband works overtime operating very heavy equipment. Megan is here this evening, and she’s happy to tell you that she is so, so much richer because, with no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and our expanded child tax credit done again by Republicans, Megan and her husband will take home more than $5,000 extra just for the year, cutting her tax bill in more than half.”

The economy and savings took center stage in the speech, with Trump celebrating that his administration was ushering in lower prices for Americans following the Biden administration.

“The Biden administration and its allies in Congress gave us the worst inflation in the history of our country,” he said. “But in 12 months, my administration has driven core inflation down to the lowest level in more than five years. And in the last three months of 2025, it was down to 1.7%. Gasoline, which reached a peak of over $6 a gallon in some states under my predecessor. It was, quite honestly, a disaster, is now below $2.30 a gallon in most states, and in some places $1.99 a gallon. And when I visited the great state of Iowa just a few weeks ago, I even saw $1.85 a gallon for gasoline.”

Tariffs have played a key role in Trump’s economic plan for the nation, with the Supreme Court delivering a blow to his tariff policies Friday when it invalidated his use of an emergency law to impose sweeping tariffs on most U.S. trading partners. Four of the nine justices were present for the speech, including John Roberts, Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett, who ruled against Trump in the decision.

Trump called the ruling “unfortunate” amid his speech, before looking toward the future and navigating separate legal avenues to usher in the tariffs.

The speech included a few outbursts from Democrats, most notably when Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green was once again removed from the chamber, as he was during Trump’s 2025 primetime speech. Green was spotted holding a sign reading, “Black people aren’t apes!”

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., also shouted at Trump, calling him a “liar” and a “murderer” after he spoke about alleged Somali-linked fraud in Minnesota.

Trump invited a swath of various guests to the speech, including everyday Americans, Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, the U.S. men’s hockey team fresh off their gold medal win, military members who acted heroically in the time of crisis and families who have suffered tragedy at the hands of illegal immigrants.

Trump took shots at Democrats throughout the address, including for the lawmakers refusing to stand to affirm they believe the “first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.”

“Isn’t that a shame?” Trump said as Democrats remained seated. “You should be ashamed of yourself not standing up.”

The president’s speech spotlighted the illegal immigration crisis under the Biden administration, including inviting guests who have suffered tragedy at the hands of illegal immigrants.

One guest, Dalilah Coleman, was just five years old when she was left with serious injuries after a multi-car pileup in California in 2024. The crash involved an illegal immigrant who was operating a truck.

“The driver was an illegal alien, let in by Joe Biden and given a commercial driver’s license by open borders, politicians and California doctors said Dalilah would never be able to walk or talk,” Trump said. “She wouldn’t even be able to eat again. But against all odds, she is now in the first grade, learning to walk. And she’s here this evening with her dad, Marcus, a fantastic man.”

The speech included a handful of breaking news moments, most notably with the president awarding a handful of high-profile recognitions for heroism. Trump honored 100-year-old aviator and veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, Royce Williams, with the Congressional Medal of Honor.

“In 1952, Royce was in the dogfight of a lifetime legendary dogfight flying through blizzard conditions, his squadron was ambushed by seven Soviet fighter planes,” Trump recounted. “It was his first aerial combat of the war, and despite being massively outnumbered and outgunned, Royce led the takedown of four enemy jets and almost destroyed the others, vanquishing his adversaries while taking 263 bullets to his own plane and being seriously hurt. His story was secret for over 50 years. He didn’t even want to tell his wife, but the legend grew and grew.”

Trump also honored Army Chief Warrant Officer Eric Slover with the Medal of Honor Tuesday. Slover operated an Army Chinook helicopter during the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro in January and was injured by hostile fire during the mission.

Trump announced U.S. men’s Olympic hockey goalie Connor Hellebuyck will be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom after the U.S. team’s win over Canada at the Olympics.

He honored U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, who was brutally attacked on the streets of Washington, D.C., ahead of Thanksgiving 2025, with the Purple Heart.

Late Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was fatally injured during the same attack, and was posthumously honored with the Purple Heart. Beckstrom’s parents were invited to the speech in her honor.

He also honored Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan, who saved 165 people during the deadly Texas floods in July 2025, with the Legion of Merit for extraordinary heroism.

Trump’s speech comes as the GOP prepares to defend its majority in the House and Senate as the November midterms loom, and also as the nation prepares to celebrate its 250 years of independence.

“The 250th anniversary of our glorious American independence,” Trump said. “This July 4th, we will mark two and a half centuries of liberty and triumph, progress and freedom in the most incredible and exceptional nation ever to exist on the face of the earth. And you’ve seen nothing yet. We’re going to do better and better and better. This is the golden age of America.”

Trump wrapped up the speech looking forward to the future, while giving a nod to the nation’s founding 250 years ago.

“The revolution that began in 1776 has not ended,” Trump said. “It still continues because the flame of liberty and independence still burns in the heart of every American patriot, and our future will be bigger, better, brighter, bolder, and more glorious than ever before. Thank you. God bless you and God bless America.”

Trump says U.S. men’s hockey goalie Connor Hellebuyck will receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

    February 24, 2026 / 11:05 PM EST / CBS News

Fresh off an Olympic gold medal-winning performance, Team USA men’s hockey goalie Connor Hellebuyck will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, President Trump announced during his State of the Union address.

“The members of this hockey squad will be very happy to hear that, based on their vote, and my vote, and in this case my vote was more important, that I will soon be presenting Connor with our highest civilian honor … the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Mr. Trump said Tuesday night, saying he had asked the team to vote on whether Hellebuyck should receive the honor during the team’s visit to the Oval Office earlier in the day.

Mr. Trump made the announcement after inviting members of Team USA into the House chamber with their gold medals, which earned them an extended standing ovation and chants of “U-S-A!” from both sides of the aisle.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever seen them get up,” Mr. Trump said, referring to Democratic members of Congress.

“I’ve never seen a goalie play as well as Connor Hellebuyck,” Mr. Trump said, earning the goalie another round of applause, during which he kissed his gold medal and pumped his fist.

Hellebuyck stopped 41 of Team Canada’s 42 shots during the game for gold. With the score tied 1-1 in the third period, he made a crucial save by stretching his stick out behind him and getting just enough of it in front of a point-blank shot from Devon Toews, deflecting the puck away from the goal.

“I asked him, ‘The one shot, the one where you put the stick in the back, and it hit the stick and bounced off, do you practice that or was that a little lucky?’” Mr. Trump said of the remarkable stop. “He refused to answer that question.”

Team USA would go on to win 2-1 in sudden-death three-on-three overtime, when Hellebuyck again made a crucial save to keep the game alive for the U.S. The win came on the 46-year anniversary of the last gold medal men’s ice hockey win for Team USA, when they took down the heavily favored Soviet Union in the “Miracle on Ice” at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.

Mr. Trump said every member of the team “rapidly put up their hands” when he asked them to vote on whether Hellebuyck should be awarded the medal. “What a special job you did. What special champions you are. Thank you very much,” he added, addressing the rest of the team.

The U.S. women’s hockey team, which also won gold by defeating Canada, declined Mr. Trump’s invitation to attend the State of the Union, citing scheduling conflicts. However, Mr. Trump said during the State of the Union that they would also “soon be coming to the White House.”

Trump’s State of the Union left some viewers unconvinced that he’ll lower cost of living, CNN poll finds

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address drew largely positive marks from a heavily Republican audience, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

But it didn’t fully convince significant shares of even that friendly audience that he’s focusing on the nation’s most important problems or that he’ll lower the cost of living.

Nearly two-thirds of speech-watchers said they had at least a somewhat positive reaction to Trump’s speech, with a smaller 38% offering a very positive response. That’s a few points cooler than the reception to his address to Congress last year and falls below the ratings for his first-term speeches in CNN polling. It’s similar to the ratings that former President Joe Biden saw during his last year in office.

Good marks from speech-watchers are typical for presidential addresses to Congress, which tend to attract generally friendly audiences that disproportionately align with presidents’ own parties. In CNN’s speech reaction polls, which have been conducted most years dating back to the Clinton era, audience reactions have always been positive.

The pool of people who watched Trump speak on Tuesday was about 13 percentage points more Republican than the general public.

Trump’s speech seemed to rally some who watched it. In a survey conducted prior to the speech, 54% said they believed his policies would move the country in the right direction; afterward, 64% of the same people said his policies would take the country down the right path. The share who believed Trump has had the right priorities stood at 44% prior to the speech and 54% immediately following its conclusion.

In the pre-speech survey, a majority of viewers said they most wanted to hear Trump talk about the economy and the cost of living. But nearly half of the audience, 45%, said that, based on Trump’s speech – which set a record for the longest State of the Union address – he was focusing too little on the issue, with 53% saying he’d given the issue the right amount of focus.

Speech-watchers were about evenly split on whether Trump’s handling of tariffs was an appropriate use of power, or whether it represented an overstep on his part. And just 31% expressed a lot of confidence in the president to make the cost of living more affordable, with 29% saying they had some confidence in him to do so and 40% that they had none at all.

Following the address, 62% of speech-watchers said both that Trump’s economic policies and his immigration policies would move the country in the right direction.

While the economic numbers are identical to his ratings after last year’s speech, Trump’s numbers on immigration represent an erosion to first-term levels, when the issue stood as one of his most significant political liabilities. The minority of speech-watchers who were dissatisfied with his level of focus on immigration were more likely to say he’d paid the issue too much attention (38%), not too little (6%).

Forty-five percent of speech-watchers said they had a lot of confidence in Trump to provide real leadership for the country, and 43% expressed a lot of confidence in him to use US military power responsibly, with 38% saying they were highly confident in him to make the right decisions about Iran.

While State of the Union addresses have long been seen as a chance for the president to shift public perception of his efforts, history suggests that the speech is unlikely to have much effect on Trump’s standing with Americans. Annual presidential addresses rarely lead to significant shifts in presidential approval among the broader US public, particularly in recent years.

In a CNN poll of the American public conducted in the days prior to the address, Trump’s approval rating stood at 36%.

The CNN poll was conducted by text message with 482 US adults who said they watched the presidential address on Tuesday and are representative of the views of speech-watchers only. Respondents were recruited to participate before the speech and were selected by a survey of members of the SSRS Opinion Panel, a nationally representative panel recruited using probability-based sampling techniques. Results for the full sample of speech-watchers have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.

Trump demands that Iran promise never to build a nuclear weapon in State of the Union address

    February 24, 2026 / 11:25 PM EST / CBS News

President Trump pressed the Iranian government to reach a deal on its nuclear program during his State of the Union address Tuesday, as he weighs possible military action against the country.

“My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy, but one thing is certain: I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon,” the president said. “Can’t let that happen.”

As the U.S. and Iran engage in indirect talks, Mr. Trump has suggested he may order strikes on Iran if it doesn’t agree to curb its nuclear program. Meanwhile, a large fleet of U.S. naval vessels has been deployed to the Middle East. The president has pressed advisers for options that would deliver a punishing strike substantial enough to compel Iranian leaders to return to negotiations under more favorable terms, CBS News has previously reported, but military planners have cautioned that such an outcome cannot be guaranteed.

Mr. Trump hasn’t said outright whether he plans to order strikes. In a brief phone call shortly before the State of the Union address, the president told CBS News chief Washington analyst Robert Costa “we’ll find out” how he will move forward on Iran.

During the speech, Mr. Trump praised last summer’s U.S. strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, but alleged that Iranian officials are now “pursuing their sinister ambitions” again.

“We wiped it out, and they want to start all over again,” he said.

The president suggested he wants a commitment from Iran not to build nuclear weapons.

“They want to make a deal, but we haven’t heard those secret words: ‘We will never have a nuclear weapon,’” the president said.

Iran has long insisted publicly that it isn’t interested in building a nuclear weapon — including earlier Tuesday, when Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X that “Iran will under no circumstances ever develop a nuclear weapon.”

However, Iran has also asserted that it has the right to enrich uranium. The country says its enrichment program is entirely peaceful, though in recent years, it has enriched uranium well beyond the level needed for applications other than weapons.

    WASHINGTON, Feb 24 (Reuters) –

    • Governor focuses on ‘affordability’ in midterm elections

WASHINGTON, Feb 24 (Reuters) – Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger delivered the Democrats’ response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday with pointed attacks on his economic record and aggressive deportations of immigrants.

Spanberger, who was sworn in last month as Virginia’s first woman governor, focused largely on the high prices that consumers have to pay after Trump promised voters in 2024 that he would make life more affordable for Americans.

It was a preview of the Democrats’ central campaign issue that they plan to use in their effort to capture control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate in November’s midterm elections.

The president spent the first part of his speech praising the economic turnaround that he said he had accomplished, contending that his aggressive use of tariffs on foreign goods was a centerpiece of an economic comeback.

Spanberger, a moderate who has flipped Republican-held seats to Democratic control in the U.S. House and Virginia governorship, painted a bleaker picture.

Farmers, she said, are suffering under the weight of tariffs that triggered retaliation from foreign countries that had been strong markets for American soybeans and other commodities. She also said the levies had raised the prices of fertilizers and other inputs needed for U.S. crops.

“Farmers have suffered, some losing entire markets,” she said.

Speaking in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the House of Burgesses that predates the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and its 250th anniversary, which Trump repeatedly referred to, Spanberger accused the president of using his office to enrich himself instead of looking out for the voters who will go to the polls later this year.

With public opinion polls showing that a majority of Americans do not support the Trump administration’s immigrant deportation tactics, Spanberger said it has been dispatching poorly trained federal agents into U.S. cities, including Minneapolis, where they have detained American citizens and have done so without judicial warrants.

“They have ripped nursing mothers away from their babies,” she said. “They have sent children, a little boy in a blue bunny hat, to far-off detention centers and they have killed American citizens in our streets.”
