The Trump administration on Friday formally designated Iran as a state sponsor of wrongful detention, the latest move to ratchet up pressure and penalize Iran for its history of imprisoning US citizens.

It is the first such designation under an executive order signed last September meant to deter countries from illegally detaining US citizens and encourage them to release wrongful detainees they have in custody. The announcement from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio comes as the Trump administration is pressing for a new nuclear deal with Iran and has threatened to launch military action against the country.

“For decades, Iran has continued to cruelly detain innocent Americans, as well as citizens of other nations, to use as political leverage against other states. This abhorrent practice must end,” Rubio said in a statement.

    Ad Feedback

Rubio warned that if Iran does not stop detaining Americans, “we will be forced to consider additional measures, including a potential geographic travel restriction on the use of U.S. passports to, through, or from Iran.”

There is such a travel restriction in place for North Korea. The US does not allow its citizens to travel to North Korea on US passports without an approved exception, and in those cases, the State Department issues a “special validation passport.”

“The Iranian regime must stop taking hostages and release all Americans unjustly detained in Iran, steps that could end this designation and associated actions. We encourage it to do so. No American should travel to Iran for any reason. We reiterate our call for Americans who are currently in Iran to leave immediately,” Rubio said Friday.

Iran has a history of wrongfully detaining Americans. In September 2023, the Biden administration secured the release of five Americans – all of whom had been imprisoned for years – as part of a wider deal with Iran.

There is one American who has been designated as wrongfully detained currently imprisoned in Iran: Reza Valizadeh. Valizadeh, an Iranian-American journalist, had worked in exile for Persian language outlets, including the US-funded Radio Farda. He returned to Iran in March 2024 to visit his elderly parents and was arrested in September of that year.

Concerns have mounted about his well-being in the years since his imprisonment. His brother said in September 2025 that Valizadeh has asthma that has “deteriorated dramatically.”

Ryan Fayhee, a US-based attorney working on Valizadeh’s case, said he is hopeful that the state sponsor of wrongful detention designation will have an impact, “particularly given the travel restrictions and the like that come with this.”

“Do I think this will free Reza? No, I don’t think it will, unfortunately. But do I believe it’s helpful? Yes,” he told CNN.

Another American imprisoned in Iran is Kamran Hekmati, who was arrested last year and sentenced to prison time by Iranian authorities for visiting Israel more than a decade ago for his son’s bar mitzvah, according to family members who spoke to CNN.

The 70-year-old Hekmati is suffering from bladder cancer and is currently detained in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison. Although an appeal has been filed, his family has serious concerns about his health.

The administration could apply the designation to other countries in the future, such as Afghanistan or Russia, where US citizens remain detained.

Carol)。

卡朋特夫妇(The Captain & Tennille)翻唱的《爱将维系我们》(Love Will Keep Us Together)于1975年登顶排行榜。

    他还通过《愚蠢的丘比特》(Stupid Cupid)和《男孩们在哪里》(Where the Boys Are)帮助康妮·弗朗西斯(Connie Francis)开启职业生涯,后者是电影《男孩们在哪里》(Where the Boys Are)的同名电影原声。

Neil Sedaka, singer whose hits included “Laughter in the Rain,” dies at 86

    Updated on: February 27, 2026 / 5:51 PM EST / CBS/AP

Neil Sedaka, the prominent singer-songwriter whose string of hits in the 1960s and ’70s included “Laughter in the Rain,” “Breaking Up is Hard to Do” and “Calendar Girl,” has died, a representative confirmed to CBS News on Friday. He was 86.

“Our family is devastated by the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Neil Sedaka,” a statement from the family read. “A true rock and roll legend, an inspiration to millions, but most importantly, at least to those of us who were lucky enough to know him, an incredible human being who will be deeply missed.”

A cause of death was not immediately available.

Sedaka was a Juilliard-trained, Brooklyn-born son of a Jewish taxi driver who began performing as a teen and kept at it for decades. At 9 years old, Sedaka had already begun intensive classical piano training at the Juilliard School.

A key member of the Brill Building songwriting factory, Sedaka teamed with lyricist and boyhood neighbor Howard Greenfield on songs that reflected the teen innocence of the post-Elvis/pre-Beatles era of the late 1950s-early 1960s, including “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” “Calendar Girl” and “Oh! Carol,” a lament for his high school sweetheart, Carole King.

After a long dry spell, he reemerged with such smashes as “Laughter in the Rain” and “Bad Blood.” The Captain & Tennille’s cover of his “Love Will Keep Us Together” was a chart-topper in 1975.

Sedaka told “CBS This Morning” in 2012 that Elton John rediscovered him in the ’70s when he was trying to start his record company.

Of the time between jobs, Sedaka said, “The creative mind is still working and it’s a drive. You have you to prove yourself each time. You have to raise the level of Neil Sedaka. You have to top yourself.”

Sedaka was nominated for five Grammy awards throughout his career.

He still played dozens of concerts a year well into his 80s. Sedaka retained the enthusiasm and broad vocal range of his youth and never tired of the standards he had sung hundreds of times.

“Past 70, Pavarotti told me the vocal cords are not what they used to be. I’m very fortunate that my voice has held,” he told The Associated Press in 2012. “It’s nice to be a legend, but it’s better to be a working legend.”

Sedaka’s songs sold millions worldwide and have been covered by a range of performers, from Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra to The 5th Dimension and Nickelback.

Sedaka helped propel the career of Connie Francis with “Stupid Cupid” and “Where the Boys Are,” the latter for the soundtrack of the movie with the same name. The Captain & Tennille received a best-album Grammy thanks largely to “Love Will Keep Us Together” and included a nod to Sedaka at the end of the song, when Toni Tennille exclaimed: “Sedaka’s back!”

Sedaka is survived by his wife, Leba Strassberg, whom he married in 1962, and his two children, Dara and Marc.

    Anthropic

Robots, already in hospitals, are ready to roll in other industries

    February 27, 2026 / 5:39 PM EST / CBS News

At Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, the nurse assistant stopped by a patient’s room to pick up some lab samples while dropping off toiletries. Then, as the helper’s pixilated blue eyes flashed a heart sign to indicate the task had been completed, it summoned an elevator and quietly rolled off to the hospital’s supply room to carry on with its next mission.

Meet Moxi, a robot that is helping medical staff at Cedars-Sinai and roughly two dozen other hospitals around the U.S.

“I don’t have to go take my 10,000 steps down into the belly of the hospital to go find things and get it for my patient,” Melanie Barone, an associate director at Cedars-Sinai, told CBS News.

“Robots are no longer so sci-fi,” Barclays analyst Zornitsa Todorova said recently at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Moxi saves hospital staff time and helps them focus on patient care, according to Diligent Robotics, the Austin, Texas-based maker of Moxi. The company told CBS News there are Moxis at 25 hospitals nationwide.

David Marshall, the chief nursing executive at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, said the 900-bed hospital started using Moxi two years ago to help with backend work, such as moving linens and retrieving medication and patient belongings. Today, the medical facility uses three of the robots.

“We’ve seen positive, emotional responses that we see from patients, staff, visitors and children. … We had one patient that asked if Moxi could come back and tell her hello after her surgery.”

Moxi, developed by Diligent Robotics, assists a nurse at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Cedars Sinai

Casey Wilbert, vice president of Rochester Regional Health in Rochester, New York, was an early adopter of Moxi. The 528-bed hospital began using the robot in 2023 and today operates eight of the devices.

“One of the great things about the robots is you’re not paying overtime, …they don’t take sick days.” He told CBS News. “This is the beginning of how we integrate robotics into health care.”

Still, such technology has limits, Marshall of Cedars-Sinai emphasizes.

“Robots touch things and people touch people. They could never hold a patient’s hand or wipe their brow or help them brush their teeth,” he said.

    Humanoid robots taking steps

If Moxi highlights how robots are already entering the workforce, the next step is the development of humanoid robots able to do a range of more complex tasks.

Jeff Cardenas, CEO of humanoid robot developer Apptroknik, said taking on a more human form allows the technology to adapt to the kind of spaces people occupy at work and at home.

“They have the same footprint as a person does. They can use the same tools. You don’t have to change everything for the robot,” he said.

Todorova of Barclays — who projects the humanoid robotics segment growing from roughly $2 billion today to $40 billion over the next 10 years, and perhaps as high as $200 billion — expects the machines to help fill labor gaps in defense, agriculture, manufacturing and health care.

Indeed, Darrell West, a manufacturing expert from Brown University, thinks autonomous robots are likely to roll out much faster than many people expect.

“Similar to how industrialization changed the world a hundred years ago, all these digital tools are going to have the same large-scale impact now. And we just have to figure out how to handle that transition so that people don’t end up being left behind or getting completely depressed that this robot is doing part of their job,” he told CBS News.

The world’s richest person, Elon Musk, is pushing hard to speed the introduction of humanoid machines into the workplace and even people’s homes. His electric car maker, Tesla, is developing a humanoid robot, dubbed Optimus, that Musk expects to quickly become an important source of labor.

“By the end of this year, I think they will be doing more complex tasks, and probably by the end of next year, I think we’d be selling humanoid robots to the public,” he said at the World Economic Forum event in Davos last month. “That’s when we are confident it’ll have very high reliability — you can basically ask it to do anything you like.”

    Surgical assistants

Apptroknik’s Cardenas wanted to develop humanoid robots after watching his grandparents age with dementia, and he sees their Apollo humanoid robot helping older individuals age more gracefully.

“And at the end of [my grandfather’s] life, he had a fall and lost his vision. And so had to rely on 24-hour caretakers. My dream was to build a robot, to build a tool that would help them do all the things that they didn’t — that they couldn’t — do anymore so that they could age more gracefully and with dignity.”

Michael Yip, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at UC San Diego, heads a lab that is developing surgical robots. “I think surgeon assistants are going to be there in 10 years,” he told CBS News, adding that “The capacity is there for them to perform autonomously in lower-stakes applications, like soft tissue cutting.”

Yip told CBS News that he expects humanoid robots to thrive in health care because it is a people-centered environment.

“In home care, where you have to navigate a home environment, and especially in hospitals where you have to navigate the hospital environment, a human form factor is actually kind of necessary.”

At least a dozen FBI employees were fired this week after revelations that the bureau under the Biden administration allegedly subpoenaed Kash Patel and Susie Wiles’ phone records in 2022 and 2023 as part of a federal probe into then-former President Donald Trump.

More than 10 FBI employees were fired Wednesday, with at least two additional FBI personnel terminated Friday, Fox News has learned.

The FBI allegedly subpoenaed Patel’s and Wiles’ records in 2022 and 2023 while they were private citizens.

Patel now serves as the director of the FBI and Wiles serves as the White House chief of staff.

The names of the fired bureau employees were not shared due to privacy reasons, with the FBI Agents Association (FBIAA) criticizing the firings earlier in the week.

“The FBIAA condemns today’s unlawful termination of FBI Special Agents, which—like other firings by Director Patel—violates the due process rights of those who risk their lives to protect our country,” the organization said in a statement.

“These actions weaken the Bureau by stripping away critical expertise and destabilizing the workforce, undermining trust in leadership and jeopardizing the Bureau’s ability to meet its recruitment goals—ultimately putting the nation at greater risk.”

Reuters first disclosed the subpoenas, which were issued during the Biden administration, while Special Counsel Jack Smith was investigating Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

Smith ended up charging Trump in 2023 with multiple felony offenses related to alleged efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 election and Trump’s handling of the documents after he left office.

A federal judge later dismissed the election interference case after Smith moved to drop it following Trump’s re-election, citing a Justice Department policy against prosecuting a sitting president.

Smith also dropped the Justice Department’s appeal of a separate ruling that dismissed the classified documents case. Trump has denied any wrongdoing in both matters.

In a statement to Fox News Wednesday, Patel called the move to seize the phone records “outrageous and deeply alarming.”

“It is outrageous and deeply alarming that the previous FBI leadership secretly subpoenaed my own phone records — along with those of now White House chief of staff Susie Wiles — using flimsy pretexts and burying the entire process in prohibited case files designed to evade all oversight,” he said.

The FBI said it discovered the information in the bureau’s newly discovered “prohibited case file.”

Patel also said he recently ended the FBI’s ability to categorize files as “prohibited.”

Fox News also learned from two FBI officials that in 2023, FBI agents allegedly recorded a phone call between Wiles and her attorney.

According to those officials, Wiles’ attorney was aware the call was being recorded and consented, but Wiles was not informed.

Wiles’ 2023 attorney disputes those claims.

“If I ever pulled a stunt like that I wouldn’t — and shouldn’t — have a license to practice law,” the unidentified attorney said, according to Axios. “I’m as shocked as Susie.”

Smith testified in 2025 that records of members’ calls helped investigators verify the timeline of events surrounding the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

He said prosecutors “followed all legal requirements in getting those records” and told a House panel the records obtained from lawmakers did not include the content of conversations.

The mad dash to award the Maduro raid pilot the Medal of Honor in time for the State of the Union

When President Donald Trump visited Fort Bragg, North Carolina, earlier this month, the commander of the elite Army Delta Force responsible for carrying out the operation to seize Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro made clear there was one man in particular who deserved the highest military honor: Chief Warrant Officer 5 Eric Slover.

Slover, an Army special operations pilot, was guiding his MH-47 helicopter to a landing in Caracas when the aircraft was “immediately” fired upon by multiple machine guns at close range, according to the citation that would eventually accompany that honor. The cockpit was hit by 15 armor-piercing rounds, four of which hit Slover in the leg.

Slover maintained control of the helicopter to ensure the safety of the Special Forces soldiers on board as they exited the aircraft to complete the mission.

The commander told Trump that Slover should receive the Medal of Honor for his actions, according to an official familiar with the matter. Trump was quickly convinced and signaled to the team he was going to do just that, two senior White House officials told CNN.

Less than two weeks later, Slover, who sustained serious injuries during the operation, stood stoically during the State of the Union address as the recognizable light blue ribbon of the Medal of Honor was secured around his neck, the medal gently placed in the center of the tie on his dress uniform.

The speed at which the Medal of Honor was approved is highly unusual. Approval for the award can take years due to the intensely bureaucratic process for consideration. There is also sometimes dispute about whether or not to award the medal, a senior White House official said, and in this case, “the president made the decision and the entire team worked together to execute.”

The award was expedited at the direction of Trump, who was eager to make the announcement at the State of the Union — an address his team had carefully crafted to include inspiring stories to engage the audience, the officials said.

Two sources familiar with the situation said that all official paperwork and processes were followed for Slover’s medal, but at a much faster timeline, helped along by military leaders’ willingness to support it and make the recommendations in-person. One of the sources acknowledged the process was “blazing fast” but said verbal approvals and briefings pushed things along as the paperwork caught up. An Army spokesperson said Friday that the service is “incredibly proud” of Slover and also said that “all statutory requirements” for the award were followed.

A Trump official tasked with expediting the process for Slover worked furiously in the days following the president’s visit to Fort Bragg to rush the paperwork through, the senior White House officials said. The camera-ready moment in which Trump called for the medal to be given to Slover was written into the first draft of his speech, one of the officials said. However, it wasn’t clear until Tuesday, the day Trump was delivering his address, whether the White House could complete the process in time.

“The White House and the Pentagon were proud to work expeditiously at the President’s direction to ensure this great American hero received the award he most certainly deserves,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNN.

Still, Slover had to agree to be featured in such a public event. The physical toll of the operation to seize Maduro has been significant; Trump said during the address that Slover was hit “very badly in the leg and hip” by armor-piercing rounds that “shred(ded) his leg.” While Slover stood tall while he was being honored, when Trump’s speech began moving on, Lt. Gen. Jonathan Braga, commander of Joint Special Operations Command, appeared to lean forward and help Slover sit back into a wheelchair sitting behind him.

The second source familiar with the situation said that his physical recovery pending, Slover wants to continue his career as an operational pilot, though it’s unclear if that will be possible, both physically and as those working with special operations typically take great lengths to avoid being publicly recognized. That calculus undoubtedly weighed on him as a soldier who has spent his career in the shadows, engaged in covert operations, but who was suddenly thrust under a national spotlight.

Slover is “incredibly humble and stoic,” the second source familiar said, and someone who “has never and would never have the expectation of getting this medal for his actions.” The fanfare, they said, is not something he has sought or, frankly, enjoys.

“In his eyes this is what he signed up to do,” the source said. “He’s honored to have received this, but this is just what he would have done whether there was a medal at the end or not.”

There have been discussions about holding another more private ceremony with Trump and Slover’s family and friends, who traditionally participate in events when a Medal of Honor is awarded, the second source familiar with the situation said. Trump also said Tuesday that 10 other soldiers from the mission will receive awards, though it’s unclear what those will be or when that ceremony would be held.

The White House is holding a Medal of Honor ceremony on Monday honoring service members from several conflicts, though the listed recipients do not include service members who participated in the recent Venezuela operation.

While details of Slover’s service are scarce, likely given the sensitive nature of the units he has been assigned to and his deployments, the awards he has received paint a picture of a challenging career.

Slover enlisted in the Army in 2005, and attended Warrant Officer Candidate School and flight school, becoming a Chinook pilot. Army warrant officers are considered the ultimate experts in their craft, and it’s rare for a soldier to make it to the rank of CW5 as Slover has; only three to four percent of warrant officers rise to that level, the Army said in 2023.

A list of his awards provided by Army Special Operations Command shows that he has received two Distinguished Flying Crosses — one with a valor device and one without — a highly prestigious medal given to service members for heroism in an aerial fight. The “V” for valor device denotes acts of heroism “above what is normally expected,” according to the medal’s criteria, “while engaged in direct combat with an enemy of the United States.”

Slover has also received the Bronze Star with one oak leaf cluster, a Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, and more.

On January 3, he was flying an MH-47 — the Special Operations variant of the CH-47 Chinook helicopter — during the operation in Venezuela, dubbed Operation Absolute Resolve. According to the official citation for his Medal of Honor, Slover “skillfully led the helicopter through a dense jungle valley in a mountainous region” and “near insurmountable surface to air threats.”

Trump, telling the story of Slover’s heroism at the State of the Union, said that after landing the helicopter safely, Slover told his co-pilot who was also wounded to take over, saying, “I’m about to pass out.”

“Chief Warrant Officer Five Slover’s heroic actions undoubtedly saved countless America lives and ensured the complete and overwhelming success of the mission,” the citation says. “His gallantry under fire and extraordinary valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.”

The recommendation process for the Medal of Honor, according to flow charts on an Army website outlining the details, involve reviews of the valorous action by the service member’s chain of command, a decorations board which determines if the Medal of Honor is warranted or not, consultation with the service chief and service secretary, and finally sending the packet up to the Secretary of Defense who can recommend the award to the president. The president has to give final approval to award the Medal of Honor.

As the process was expedited with the leaders’ recommendation being taken straight to the president, in person, Slover still had to agree to participate in such a public moment. The second source familiar with the situation said he agreed after speaking with other leaders about it, roughly a week before the State of the Union.

Every element came together, and on Tuesday evening in the Capitol, Slover stood with the help of a walker and stared straight ahead as Braga, commander of Joint Special Operations Command, placed the nation’s highest medal for military valor around his neck.

As the crowd applauded and chanted “USA!” Slover nodded and thanked those around him, showing little emotion aside from a brief moment with his wife, when he smiled down at her and squeezed her hand.

The most viral Jeffrey Epstein conspiracy theories, debunked

    2026-02-27T18:11:12-0500 / CBS News

You can’t go on social media these days without being served outlandish conspiracy theories about the Epstein files. The posts have racked up millions of views. But in the age of AI, it can be hard to parse out what’s real from what isn’t.

So we worked with our CBS News Confirmed team to understand what, if anything, underpins the most viral conspiracy theories about Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell and their supposed ties to some of the biggest news stories in American history. Here’s what we found.

Epstein alive and living in Israel? FALSE

You may have seen photos circulating on social media that purport to show Epstein walking around Tel Aviv, flanked by bodyguards. When investigated, though, we found these photos show obvious marks of being produced through AI.

For example, this photo posted on Reddit on Feb. 1 shows a Gemini AI watermark on the bottom right corner, and one of the signs in the background reads “Haangus Ev.”, which is not a real street name.

Next, some users were pointing to Fortnite as further evidence to back this theory. The argument there was that Epstein’s Fortnite username had newly become active again in Israel.

But this, too, is false. So let’s talk about how it came about.

In the files, there are movie and subscription receipts sent to Epstein’s YouTube account “littlestjeff1,” which is registered under his email “jeevacation@gmail.com.”

There is also an email that references a $25.95 charge for VBucks, the currency used on Fortnite. The VBucks email, however, makes no reference of a username, and the sender and recipient are redacted.

Social media users are simply making the assumption that Epstein’s username on YouTube would be the same username he’d use on Fortnite. And they’re making the assumption that Epstein had a Fortnite account at all, when we actually don’t know who the sender and recipient of that email were.

There is a profile for a Fortnite user named “littlestjeff1. And that user appeared to be active as recently as 2025, which is after Jeffrey Epstein’s death. When all of the speculation around this account being proof that Epstein was still alive started swirl on social, that profile suddenly went private in February, which only added fuel to the flames.

But Fortnite has now come out and said that an existing account owner simply changed their username to “littlestjeff1” after the final batch of Epstein files were released and Epstein’s YouTube name was revealed. And Fortnite confirmed that they have no record of Epstein’s email addresses existing in their account system.

Then, there are the photos that the Metropolitan Correctional Center released as evidence after Epstein’s death. Many people on social media are now pulling up these images, next to images of Jeffrey Epstein in life, pointing out disparities in various facial features, and using those disparities as proof that he isn’t actually dead.

CBS News reviewed images of Epstein from 2004 to 2019. And yes, it’s true that some of the facial features do look different. But after death, changes can occur in a face due to swelling, according to research published by the NIH. Bacteria break down tissues and produce gases that contribute to the body’s decomposition process.

And many of Epstein’s distinct facial features are still there — like his curly gray hair, dark bushy eyebrows, deep-set smile lines, a line across the chin, a similarly shaped nostril. There is a distinct indent between his eyebrows that is seen throughout the years, as well as wrinkles and bags under his eyes. Forensic scientists have conducted research that suggests facial creases may be resilient enough to changes caused by bloating after death and can be used for identification purposes.

These images of Epstein after his death show similarities to images of him from a suicide attempt a month prior, and also images of him in 2004, 2013 and 2017.

Comparison of facial features in photos of Jeffrey Epstein from 2004, 2013, 2017, July 2019 and after his death in August 2019. U.S. Department of Justice

The New York City Chief Medical Examiner ruled in August 2019 that Epstein’s cause of death was a suicide by hanging. A forensic pathologist, who was hired by Epstein’s brother to investigate the death and was present during Epstein’s autopsy, said the fingerprints on the body found in Epstein’s cell match those that were taken of Epstein during his 2006 arrest in Florida, 60 Minutes reported.

Epstein linked to JonBenet Ramsey? FALSE

Shortly after the latest batch of Epstein files was released by the U.S. Department of Justice, social media users started circulating this photo from Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse. It shows a little girl on Epstein’s shoulders, wearing a jumper similar to one worn in a well-known photo of JonBenet Ramsey.

Yes, the two items are similar, but the fact remains that it’s a generic piece of clothing which would have been worn by many children. It can’t be held up as conclusive evidence of any ties between Epstein, his sex trafficking of minors, and the 1996 death of JonBenet at her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado.

For what it’s worth, JonBenet’s father, John Ramsey, also recently responded to the viral conspiracy theory, telling TMZ there is “absolutely no truth to it.”

Epstein, Maxwell linked to Madeleine McCann? FALSE

Just as the story of JonBenet has fascinated the masses for years, so has the story of Madeleine McCann, a young British girl who went missing at the age of 3 while on vacation with her parents in Portugal in 2007.

Now, there are a number of viral videos on TikTok and Instagram highlighting the resemblance between a person of interest seen in a composite sketch and Maxwell.

That sketch of a person of interest is real. Private detectives working for McCann’s parents released a sketch on Aug. 6, 2009, showing a woman they believed may have information about their child’s disappearance. The sketch depicts a woman who was seen by two British men in Barcelona three days after McCann went missing on May 3.

But a photo of Maxwell from May 2007, the month McCann disappeared, shows Maxwell had longer hair than the sketch. And a review of several other photos of Maxwell throughout 2007 shows her hairstyle remained consistently longer than the sketch.

Then there’s something else in the files that creators are pointing to as further evidence of this theory. A U.K. resident submitted an online tip to the FBI regarding an alleged sighting of Maxwell with McCann in September 2009. And yes, that is really in the files. But it’s a tip, not a confirmed sighting. The DOJ has noted that the released files “may include fake or falsely submitted images, documents or videos, as everything that was sent to the FBI by the public was included…”

Lastly, people are sharing this surveillance footage purporting to show a woman walking with McCann down a street shortly after her disappearance. In one angle, the woman appears to be wearing a head covering. At other times, she appears to resemble Ghislaine Maxwell. While the video is real, there is no concrete evidence that it shows either Maxwell or McCann.

So, the CBS News Confirmed team deems this theory false as well.

A lookalike swapped for Ghislaine Maxwell? FALSE

After Ghislaine Maxwell’s deposition in February, people started pointing to perceived discrepancies in her facial features and voice to support a conspiracy theory that the woman we saw in the deposition was not, in fact, Ghislaine Maxwell, but a lookalike that had been swapped in for her.

Comparing images of Maxwell from 2015, 2016 and 2020 to the 2026 deposition footage, CBS News identified numerous similarities in her facial features. Photos throughout the years show Maxwell’s dark thin eyebrows, slightly protruding ears and thin lips that have a distinct shape when at rest. Maxwell’s hair also has a rounded shape with a defined indent in the 2026 deposition and also in images of her from 2015.

Some users claimed Maxwell’s voice sounded different in her 2026 deposition when compared to other videos of her speaking. Videos released in the DOJ files show she spoke with a softer tone in clips that appear to be from depositions in 2015 and 2016.

Maxwell has been jailed since her July 2020 arrest. She was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Her attorney David Oscar Markus confirmed it was Maxwell who attended the deposition.

“Yes, that was Ghislaine in the House Oversight photo. Sigh. Jail is crushing and remember she was in torturous conditions — including sleep deprivation — back in New York. There are a lot of conspiracy theories out there but this one might be in the hall of fame,” Markus told CBS News.

Maxwell’s siblings have consistently posted about their sister’s imprisonment. And the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ inmates database lists Maxwell.

Comparison of facial features in photos of Ghislaine Maxwell from 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2026. U.S. Department of Justice; Getty Images

A few days later, a new AI-generated video of Ghislaine Maxwell started circulating — this one purporting to show her standing on a street in Canada, with gray hair but her recognizable facial features. When investigated, we determined that it’s an AI face swap. And when reached for comment, the video’s creator confirmed, saying: “Never meant for it to escalate the way it did! My intent was to make satire content but people reuploaded and interpreted the video without checking with me first, purposefully misleading people for engagement.”

Epstein tortured girl with a magnifying glass? FALSE

Users have claimed that an old video clip shows Epstein torturing a young girl with a magnifying glass. They share a screenshot showing that a caller reported to the FBI a viral video of what he said appeared to be Epstein torturing a young woman.

But this video has been debunked. It’s actually a clip from the adult film “Drea Morgan Stakeout Under Glass” starring Drea Morgan and a male actor, named Lew Rubens, who bears some resemblance to Epstein. But it is not, in fact, Epstein.

    Epstein orchestrated COVID-19 pandemic? FALSE

Social media users have claimed an email with the subject line “Preparing for pandemics” is evidence that Epstein planned the COVID-19 pandemic. The email was forwarded to Epstein in 2015 and an attachment on the email indicates it was related to a meeting in Geneva about pandemics.

Users claiming that Epstein orchestrated the pandemic pointed to Epstein’s ties to Bill Gates, who has been the subject of conspiracy theories related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Gates Foundation — which works to reduce disease and poverty around the world — has been one of the World Health Organization’s primary donors to and also funded BioNTech, which helped develop the first COVID-19 vaccine.

There is no evidence Epstein had prior knowledge of the COVID-19 pandemic. Global discussions about pandemic preparedness are not abnormal and are not exclusively related to COVID-19.

We’ve even found posts alleging that Jeffrey Epstein’s DNA was somehow in the COVID shots. But there’s no evidence of that.

Social media users have purported that Epstein conspired with people who developed COVID vaccinations to utilize it as a “delivery system with some of his own DNA”.

Some users who posted about the rumor later said they did not say it as fact.

Maxwell tied to 9/11 attacks? FALSE

Users are sharing emails sent to Maxwell days after Sept. 11, 2001, as evidence that she had ties to the attacks.

One email sent on Sept. 18, 2001, asks, “Where is the real pilot?” without further context. A separate document released by the DOJ shows additional emails sent on the same chain, which discusses Maxwell landing in Santa Monica, California, on a helicopter.

A second email from the author Edward Jay Epstein, dated January 2003, invites Maxwell to the “Shadow Commission on 9/11”, which she declines. An August 2001 archive for the website “http://vvww.edwardjayepstein.com/pieces.htm” linked in the email shows what appears to be a portfolio website for Edward Epstein. A February 2003 archive, which is the closest version available from the date the email was sent, shows a list of priorities for the “Shadow Commission on 9-11-2001” to investigate issues including government and security failures.

Edward Epstein, who died in 2024, was an investigative journalist and author known for his research on similarly high-profile topics like John F. Kennedy’s assassination, which is referenced in the “Who killed JFK?” tab on his website. He also had contacts with Jeffrey Epstein over the years. The New York Times reports they were not related.

Epstein accessed millions of school photos? FALSE

After the latest batch of Epstein files was released by the DOJ, creators started pointing to Epstein’s relationship with billionaire investor Leon Black to fuel rumors that Lifetouch — a company that takes millions of kids’ school photos — used those school photos as a “shopping catalog” for pedophiles. Some school districts actually started canceling picture day because of it.

Leon Black is the former CEO of Apollo Global Management, which acquired Lifetouch’s parent company Shutterfly in 2019.

Lifetouch Group CEO Ken Murphy issued a statement saying that the images of school photos Lifetouch takes are “safeguarded for families and schools, only, with no exceptions. Lifetouch does not — and has never provided — images to any third party.”

Furthermore, Murphy said that neither Apollo Global Management nor its funds are involved in operations at Lifetouch, and no one employed by Apollo has had access to any images.

Epstein got Kuru disease from cannibalism? FALSE

Another outlandish theory circulating on social media is the claim that Epstein was a cannibal and that videos in the files prove he got Kuru disease because of it.

The main piece of evidence people highlight to support this theory are two videos in which you can see that parts of Epstein’s face are swollen.

While these videos of Epstein are real files released by the DOJ, there is no evidence to support the conclusion that his physical symptoms here are a result of Kuru disease.

Kuru disease is fatally transmitted through ritualistic cannibalism, with death occurring within one to two years of the onset of symptoms, according to the NIH.

Users have shared an email excerpt where Epstein says, “not food —people.” A separate document shows the complete context of the email chain where Epstein was speaking figuratively, referring to the difficult people he had to deal with.

Lastly, this claim has been repeated in multiple TikTok videos that include AI-generated audio and follow the same script — in some cases, stealing the likenesses and voices of actual creators to repeat it. When you see videos with the exact same script word-for-word, that could either mean that one creator is simply ripping off another. Or it can be a sign of AI.

Either way, there’s simply no evidence to suggest that there’s any truth to this theory.

“They ate humans” video tied to Epstein? FALSE

An old video of a woman shouting in Spanish has been circulating online alongside claims that it shows a Mexican model who supposedly fled one of Epstein’s parties, screaming that Epstein and his guests were eating people.

The footage is actually from an incident that happened in Monterrey, Mexico, in August 2009, according to coverage by Spanish news outlet Info7. The video shows a woman, identified as Gabriela Rico Jimenez, shouting outside a hotel: “They ate humans.” Info7 posted a Facebook video on Feb. 6 revisiting their past coverage of the woman.

While the incident did happen outside a hotel in Monterrey, the woman does not mention Epstein’s name in the footage and there’s no evidence the video is related to Epstein.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday designated Iran as a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention, calling for Americans currently in Iran to “leave immediately.”

“When the Iranian regime seized power 47 years ago, Ayatollah Khomeini consolidated his control of power by endorsing the hostage taking of U.S. embassy staff,” Rubio wrote in a news statement. “For decades, Iran has continued to cruelly detain innocent Americans, as well as citizens of other nations, to use as political leverage against other states. This abhorrent practice must end.”

“[President [Donald] Trump] issued an Executive Order to Protect U.S. Nationals from Wrongful Detention Abroad last fall and Congress subsequently enacted the Countering Wrongful Detention Act of 2025, authorizing the Department to designate Iran as a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention,” he added.

Rubio said if Iran does not stop, the U.S. will be forced to consider “additional measures,” including a potential geographic travel restriction on the use of U.S. passports [to, through, or from Iran].

“The Iranian regime must stop taking hostages and release all Americans unjustly detained in Iran, steps that could end this designation and associated actions. We encourage it to do so,” Rubio wrote. “No American should travel to Iran for any reason. We reiterate our call for Americans who are currently in Iran to leave immediately.”

Rubio’s comments came amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran as they take part in indirect nuclear negotiations.

Trump last week [gave Iran]roughly 10 to 15 days to reach an agreement, warning during his State of the Union address that the urgency to make a deal was backed by force.
