Controversial FDA official leaving drug center post in latest departure at agency

    May 15, 2026 / 10:11 PM EDT / CBS News

The leader of the Food and Drug Administration division responsible for regulating prescription and over-the-counter drugs is leaving her post, a senior FDA official confirmed to CBS News, marking the latest high-level shake-up at the FDA.

Dr. Tracy Beth Høeg had served as acting director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) since December, helming an office that reviews applications for new drugs. She previously advised former FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary.

A Health and Human Services spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The news of Høeg’s departure was first reported by Reuters.

Høeg is leaving her job three days after Makary resigned as FDA commissioner following a flood of news reports about internal tensions within the agency, including disagreements over a recent decision to approve flavored e-cigarettes. A source familiar with the matter told CBS News that Makary left due to the e-cigarette dispute, adding that the commissioner didn’t want to approve flavored products but had been forced to do so by other members of the administration.

The former head of the FDA office responsible for vaccine approvals, Dr. Vinay Prasad, also departed the agency last month. Prasad briefly left the agency last summer, but was reinstated less than two weeks later.

Høeg’s appointment as the head of CDER had drawn controversy and sparked alarm among senior FDA officials due to her history of vaccine skepticism, CBS News previously reported. She helped write a memo last year linking several children’s deaths to the COVID-19 vaccine, without providing data to back up the claim, and she was involved in a controversial effort to reduce the number of recommended childhood vaccines.

“Putting Tracy Beth in charge is like dropping an atom bomb,” one agency source told CBS News in December.

US moves to end job protections for hundreds of health department workers

WASHINGTON, May 15 (Reuters) – The Trump administration moved on Friday to strip hundreds of senior U.S. Department of Health and Human Services employees of civil service job protections, according ‌to an email reviewed by Reuters.

HHS employees at several agencies received the email, which said members of their teams would have their jobs reclassified. The change means they can be fired at will. Previously, they could only be fired for cause and had appeal rights.

The move is in line with an overhaul announced by the administration in February of the government’s civil service system.

The overhaul gives the president more power to hire and fire up to 50,000 career federal employees who are being reclassified from Schedule F to Schedule Policy/Career.

An HHS official confirmed the email’s authenticity but did not respond to questions about how many staff would be affected and their agencies and positions. The category of employees involved, GS-15, usually consists of senior technical ‌experts, managers, high-level policy staff and supervisors.

The email said that initially “a relatively modest number…on the order of hundreds not thousands” of HHS personnel in that category would be affected by the reclassification.

The email said “additional tranches” of conversions would follow. The official said there would be no mass layoffs at the department beyond those previously announced.

Trump pledged in his campaign to strip job protections from federal workers deemed by his team to be “influencing” government policy. Governance experts say the change will make it easier to carry out more mass layoffs.

Unions representing federal workers have challenged the move in federal court.

The Trump administration has sought to shrink the federal workforce and make civil servants and historically independent boards and commissions more accountable to the White House.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/40d12546-ef14-47a1-928d-e8525fe40663

As college costs climb and skepticism about higher education grows, many Americans are asking whether a bachelor’s degree is still worth the price.

A new analysis of Texas public college students shows graduates generally earn far more than non-degree holders, even in liberal arts.

The analysis, by the Postsecondary Commission, a nonprofit education group, tracked about 29,000 students who enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs in the 2008-09 academic year. Researchers then tracked the graduates’ “cumulative net value-added earnings” over the next 15 years.

That metric compares grads’ total earnings over a period of time with those of workers without bachelor’s degrees, while also subtracting educational expenses such as tuition, room and board and income lost while attending college.

On average, college graduates outearned high school graduates by almost $87,000 over that 15-year period, even after accounting for college costs.

Engineering and architecture majors enjoyed the highest returns. But even liberal arts majors, whose degrees can translate into lower earnings, outperformed their peers without bachelor’s degrees by about $35,000, the study found.

“Those pursuing a bachelor’s degree — regardless of field of study — are likely making a wise investment,” Michael Itzkowitz, president of higher education consulting firm HEA Group, told CBS News of the findings. “That’s a financial gain that will likely grow even more over time, as these learners and earners progress throughout their careers.”

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/40d12546-ef14-47a1-928d-e8525fe40663

The Postsecondary Commission study is limited to Texas students, and results may vary in other states where regional economic differences can require different levels of employment training, Itzkowitz noted. But the analysis shows that even lower-paying fields of study tend to offer economic benefits for college grads, he said.

“This study is quite rigorous, as it takes opportunity costs into account, meaning it includes the foregone costs of spending time in college in comparison to those who begin working straight out of high school,” he said.

    Boost from other degrees

Earning a bachelor’s degree isn’t the only way to boost earnings, with the analysis also assessing the long-term earnings boost for students who received associate’s degrees and other certificates.

Most associate’s degrees generated positive returns. The construction trades provided the strongest payoff at roughly $72,000 over 15 years after earning the credentials.

By contrast, some two-year programs, including culinary services and logistics, resulted in net losses of about $13,000 and $15,000, respectively.

Certificates also showed mixed results. Construction trade certificates generated the highest return, at roughly $48,000 over 15 years. But seven certificate fields, including social sciences and information technology, resulted in net losses during that period.

奥弗比此前曾撰写过一本关于阿富汗的非虚构作品《神圣血脉:阿富汗战争的内部视角》(Holy Blood: An Inside View of the Afghan War)。

U.S. reups $6 million reward in case of American who vanished 12 years ago in Afghanistan

    May 15, 2026 / 5:27 PM EDT / CBS News

The United States on Friday reupped two rewards totalling $6 million in the case of an American who vanished 12 years ago in Afghanistan.

Freelance writer Paul Edwin Overby Jr., who had been conducting research for a book in May 2014, had said he might cross the border into Pakistan when he vanished in Khost province, Afghanistan, the FBI said.

Overby had written an earlier nonfiction book on Afghanistan, “Holy Blood: An Inside View of the Afghan War.” Reuters reported his wife, Jane Larson, said he was researching a follow-up to the book and hoped to interview Sirajuddin Haqqani, head of the Taliban-allied Haqqani militant network.

His wife told a Pakistani newspaper in 2017 that she believed he was kidnapped and appealed to his kidnappers to reunite “an aging couple.” Overby would be 83 years old.

“For over a decade, FBI agents and analysts have worked tirelessly to find Paul and bring him home,” Assistant Director in Charge Darren Cox said. “We will continue to coordinate with partner agencies and pursue all credible leads until we can provide Paul’s family with the answers they’ve waited 12 years to hear.”

The Taliban has recently released several Americans wrongfully detained in Afghanistan. In March, Dennis Coyle, a 64-year-old academic and language expert from Colorado, was released from detention.

Ryan Corbett and another American, William McKenty, were released in January 2025, with the help of Qatari negotiators, in exchange for a Taliban figure who had been imprisoned for life on drug trafficking charges.

George Glezmann and another American, Faye Hall, were released in March 2025, followed by a fifth American, Amir Amiri, who was freed last September.

The FBI Washington Field Office announced a reward of up to $1 million. The U.S. Department of State’s Rewards for Justice program is still offering a reward of up to $5 million for information.

Both rewards for information leading to Overby’s location, recovery and return remain unclaimed.

    >

    “该法案涵盖儿童人工智能、网络 predators(网络 predators 通常译为“网络性侵害者”或“网络掠食者”)等多个方面,并将制定具有实际威慑力的新刑罚。

Navy veteran Rocky Rochford served his country for 33 years, holding the title of commodore. Now, he’s on a mission to flip Tampa Bay from blue to red, in the midst of a spirited campaign to unseat 20-year incumbent Kathy Castor in Florida’s 14th congressional district.

Rochford recently sat down to discuss his campaign with Fox News Digital.

“So in 20 years, Kathy Castor has been the author of two bills that became law. And both of those were to rename post offices. So I would say that Kathy Castor has been ineffective. She hasn’t really helped Tampa Bay in the ways that matter the most. Affordability is probably the biggest thing on everyone’s kitchen table list of discussion points. Gasoline, groceries, electricity, insurance. I mean, the list goes on and on and on.”

Rochford emphasizes that his leadership experience has prepared him to be ready to represent the people of Tampa Bay from day one.

RAYS AGREE TO $2.3B DEAL FOR NEW BALLPARK IN TAMPA

“So it’s about leadership. I have spent my entire adult life…33 years in the Navy, four years at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. I got to go back to the age of 18 for the first time before I was actually part of the military. So, it’s been entrenched in my being, it is in my soul, I’m very strong in my faith.

And I believe that we need someone who is not only going to bring leadership to the process, but is going to bring their faith to the process up in D.C., and be part of the solution. People who are anti the other side, whether it doesn’t matter what side you’re sitting on, when they are against the other side to the point where they won’t even talk to them, that’s problematic. We’re not gonna get anything accomplished, we’re not going to get anything done. And that’s exactly what’s happening up in DC right now, we see a lot of that.”

Children’s rights is an issue at the forefront of Rochford’s campaign.

“I have three major bills that are the highlight of what I’ve been working on. And the first is my children’s bill of rights. I do believe that children are the future, and they need to be protected far better than they’re being protected now. So the laws that govern children are written amongst 11 different government agencies. Those agencies don’t overlap and they don’t talk to each other. This bill is designed to create a shield, an organization that oversees all of those laws.

“This covers everything from AI for kids, online predators, and it provides new penalties with teeth. This is we’re going to get after those folks. The predators have been exploiting four different avenues on children across state lines. I’m going to close every one of those doors. Parental rights, no boys in girls sports. I mean, this bill covers adoption. It covers foster care, egg donor, IVF. It is complete.”

Rochford argues that foreign influence plays a large role in shaping electoral outcomes, and particularly singles out China-based political donor and activist Neville Roy Singham.

“There’s a lot folks who have nothing to do with the United States…that are influencing our elections, they’re influencing the people…We know that Neville Singham, who’s a U.S. citizen living in Shanghai, is taking money from the CCP to disrupt America from the inside. China calls this the smokeless war, and it really is and and they’re not the only ones.

“Iran is doing the same thing, we know North Korea is involved, Russia so there’s a lot of influence happening in here that are that are causing wreaking havoc but we as a society need to see beyond that. We are one America, and I’m America first. I’m American first before politics, America first before party.”

LAWMAKERS RAISE ALARM OVER NEVILLE ROY SINGHAM’S $278M NETWORK SPREADING CCP PROPAGANDA IN THE U.S.

Florida’s 14th district is hardly politically monolithic, and Rochford emphasizes that he seeks to represent the entire district, not merely Republicans.

“I’m about listening. So I’m here to not only listen to the right, I’m here to listen to the center, and I’m here to listen the left. Because if we can’t come together and find the commonalities that will make us a better country, then we are doomed as a country. So we must support what we’re all after, which is a great America, a great society that takes care of its own and helps around the world.”

Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., takes her seat for the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party hearing in the Cannnon House Office Building on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.

He views energy policy and independence as the foundation of affordability for American workers and families.

“So I’ve been talking about affordability for some time. To me, the foundation of affordability for just about everything runs off of energy. The price of oil drives the price of gas, which is in our trucks, in our trains, in our airplanes, in ships. And so we need to get control. And so one of the bills that I have drafted will propose that…we first have to become energy independent. We’re the largest producer of energy in the world. So our people should be benefiting from it, not hurting from it.”

Among the most important policy issues for Rochford is the national debt, which he has spent a great deal of time researching. He has a plan that would retire America’s national debt by the 2060s:

“We don’t want to leave a legacy of debt to our children and grandchildren. So I had go back 40 years to try to figure out where this all started, and where we went off the tracks. And I now understand the entire policy. Balancing the budget is only treating a symptom. It does not treat the disease. So the disease is Congress, I’m sorry, but it’s true.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP

“Every bit of money that comes in that’s extra from Congress goes into the general pool and they spend it. And all of the great ideas that have been used in the past, because I studied them all in the past on how to get after the national debt, balance the budget, the things that’ll help us get there. They were only policy, they were never law. So this suite of bills is law and it has teeth. And so the very first bill will design, it will create a trust and it is the American National Debt Trust. And when the money goes in there, it cannot come out and it cannot be spent by Congress in any other way. So if we enacted my legislation it would still take us to the 2060s to retire the national debt, but if we do nothing, and we’re on the path of doing nothing, in 10 years the national debt will be $61 trillion.”

Florida’s primary election is August 18.

1 firefighter dead, 10 other people injured in fire and explosion at Maine lumber mill

    May 15, 2026 / 7:50 PM EDT / CBS News

A large fire and explosion Friday at a lumber mill in Maine killed one firefighter and injured at least 10 other people, officials said. The blaze was still active as of late Friday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to a fire in the silo of the Robbins Lumber mill at 10 a.m. in Searsmont, Maine, about 95 miles from Portland, Mike Sauschuck, commissioner of the state Department of Public Safety, said during a news conference.

“While firefighters were conducting fire suppression efforts, an explosion occurred. Multiple individuals sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals throughout the state,” Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a statement.

One firefighter was killed at the scene, Moss said. The firefighter will be transported to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy and identification. Several other firefighters are reported to be in serious and critical condition.

Sauschuck said Friday afternoon he could not provide the exact number of people injured, “or where they were working or who they were working for.”

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland, which has a Level 1 trauma designation, said it was anticipating 10 patients to its emergency department.

The Thorndike Fire Department said in a social media post that multiple firefighters and civilians were injured. The department also said multiple fire trucks were lost to fire.

Officials said they do not know the cause of the fire at this time.

Catherine Robbins-Halsted, an owner at Robbins Lumber, said Friday that all of the company’s employees were accounted for.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/explosion-maine-searsmont-lumber-mill-firefighters/

Robbins Lumber, a family-owned business, opened in 1881 and now manages 30,000 acres of its own forests, according to the company. In 1957, the mill “burned to the ground” after a fire, but was rebuilt and added a new sawmill.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins said in a social media post that “the Robbins family is beloved in the Searsmont community, and Robbins Lumber is a piece of Maine history.”

“I have known the family for many years,” Collins said in the post. “My heart goes out to them, their employees, and the first responders who have come from all over the region to help in the emergency response. This is a very sad crisis, and all those affected are in my prayers.”

Maine Gov. Janet Mills said in a social media post that she was briefed on the fire in Searsmont and urged civilians to stay clear of the area.

“I ask Maine people to join me in keeping all those affected in their thoughts,” she said.
