    • Speakers include evangelical Christian leaders and conservative Catholic figures
    • Event organized by Freedom 250, a White House-backed public-private partnership
    • Critics argue event promotes Christian nationalism, blurring church-state separation

WASHINGTON, May 17 (Reuters) – A Trump administration-backed celebration of U.S. religious heritage on Sunday is highlighting conservative Christian leaders’ ties to the president as critics say the gathering does not reflect the country’s diverse faith landscape.

The nine-hour program, called “Rededicate 250: National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise & Thanksgiving,” ‌mostly features speakers from two Christian traditions — evangelical Christianity and conservative Catholicism.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to appear in a video message while senior Republicans including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will speak on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. According to organizers, the event is meant to “prepare for the nation’s 250th birthday with Scripture, testimony, prayer, and rededication of our country as One Nation to God.”

The gathering is organized by Freedom 250, a public-private partnership created by the White House to coordinate 250th anniversary celebrations alongside federal agencies.

Advocates of church-state separation say the event blurs government and religion.

“This government-sponsored prayer fest is the epitome of exactly what our secular Constitution forbids our government from doing,” said Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, in a statement.

“It is a fusion not only of church and state, but also of our federal government with Christian nationalism,” said Gaylor, whose organization advocates for the separation of church and state.

Some critics have pointed to the absence of religious groups such as mainline Protestant churches including Lutherans, Methodists and Episcopalians. Also not represented are the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism.

More than a quarter of all U.S. adults identify as religiously unaffiliated, according to figures from the Pew Research Center. About 23% and 19% identify as evangelical Protestant and Catholic, respectively, and about 11% identify as mainline Protestant.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, urged, opens new tab the organizers to include speakers from other religious groups. Muslims arrived in North America before U.S. independence, said Corey Saylor, research and advocacy director at the organization.

“The reality is that the religious landscape ‌in the United States was more diverse than many people think of, and it certainly means today we have a religious landscape that deserves to be looked at and respected,” Saylor told Reuters.

    ‘SCREENSHOT’ OF EARLY AMERICA

Faith leaders slated to speak include Bishop Robert Barron, from the Catholic Diocese of Winona-Rochester; Jonathan Falwell, chancellor of Liberty University, a school established by Christian evangelicals; and Rabbi Meir Soloveichik, senior rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York City.

Among the political speakers are Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republican Senator Tim Scott. No prominent Democrats are due to appear.

One of Sunday’s speakers, National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference leader Samuel Rodriguez, said in an interview that the mostly Christian speaker list reflects what the American colonies looked like after the Great Awakening religious revival of the 18th century.

“It’s pretty much a depiction, a screenshot of our foundation,” Rodriguez told Reuters.

The event is one of 16 planned by the administration for the 250th anniversary of the United States, and the first in 2026. According to the event’s website, it is meant to give “praise to God for 250 years of His Providence for the United States, in praying that God Bless and Protect America for the next 250 years, and in solemnly rededicating our country as One Nation under God.”

Critics say the Freedom 250 events downplay or ignore troubling elements of the nation’s past such as slavery and violence toward Indigenous people.

Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who is Catholic, have criticized Pope Leo and other faith leaders who disagree with the administration’s policies. After feuding with the pope, Trump briefly posted an AI-generated image of himself as a Christ-like figure before deleting it following criticism from some administration supporters.

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6391281027112

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6384818431112

Trump calls out Rep Thomas Massie: ‘Kentucky, get this LOSER out of politics’ Tuesday

Trump urges support for Ed Gallrein in Tuesday’s GOP primary

    May 17, 2026 7:33am EDT / Fox News

    By Eric Mack Fox News

Fresh off his work to oust Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., in a Louisiana primary, President Donald Trump made a call to action against Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., urging his backers to vote out another one of his GOP critics and warning the rest of the party to align with him or risk Cassidy’s fate.

“Tom Massie of Kentucky, the worst and most unreliable Republican Congressman in the history of our Country, is an even bigger insult to our Nation than Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who suffered an unprecedented loss tonight by not even being allowed to run in the Republican Primary,” Trump wrote on Truth Social shortly after midnight.

“This is the first time such a thing has ever happened to a sitting U.S. Senator!” the president continued. “That’s what you get by voting to Impeach an innocent man, especially one who made it possible for Cassidy’s Senate win.”

Cassidy failed to advance in Louisiana’s Republican Senate primary Saturday night, finishing behind Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming. Letlow and Fleming will face each other in a June 27 runoff after no candidate cleared a majority.

Trump used Cassidy’s defeat as a warning shot against Massie, who Trump has called a “grand-stander” for having voted against his agenda in the House since 2020.

“Very disloyal, but Tom Massie, a major Sleazebag, is even worse!” Trump’s scathing post continued. “Kentucky, get this LOSER out of politics in Tuesday’s Election. He is nicknamed Rand Paul Jr., another real ‘beauty,’ because of his absolutely terrible voting habits.

“Vote for Ed Gallrein, a successful Kentucky farmer, and American War Hero, who only ran because he thought that Massie was so disloyal and disrespectful to your President, ME!

TRUMP CONTINUES LAMBASTING INCUMBENT REPUBLICAN THOMAS MASSIE AS CHALLENGER FILES TO ENTER RACE

“This is a great man, Central Casting, in fact, who truly deserves to represent the fantastic people of Kentucky, a Commonwealth that I am proud to have won all three times, in record fashion!

“ED WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Massie is facing Gallrein in the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District on Tuesday. The race has become one of the highest-profile GOP House primaries of the cycle, with Trump endorsing Gallrein in an effort to deny Massie another term.

The president’s attack followed several posts celebrating Cassidy’s defeat in Louisiana.

“A BIG NIGHT IN POLITICS. THANK YOU TO ALL!” Trump wrote in a separate Truth Social post.

Cassidy was one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump after the Jan. 6 election protest in Trump’s second impeachment trial. Trump called Cassidy “disloyal” and said his “political career is OVER!”

Trump also congratulated Letlow, saying she ran a “fantastic race” and would “make a brilliant Senator” after “taking care of some additional business.” Letlow led Saturday’s primary, while Fleming placed second and Cassidy finished third.

PATRIOT OR ‘PATHETIC RINO’? MAVERICK REPUBLICAN THOMAS MASSIE TRADES ‘AMERICA FIRST’ LABEL FOR ‘AMERICA ONLY’

The president’s focus quickly shifted back to Kentucky, where Massie has survived past pressure campaigns from Trump but is now facing a well-funded primary challenge in the final stretch.

Massie has represented Kentucky’s 4th District since 2012. The district stretches across northern Kentucky and is heavily Republican, making the GOP primary the decisive contest in most election cycles.

Trump’s feud with Massie has intensified over the past year. Trump called for Massie to be primaried after the congressman opposed a short-term government funding bill in March 2025, pushing for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files and opposing his decision to go to war with Iran.

“Someone thinks they can control my voting card by threatening my reelection,” Massie shot back at Trump last year.

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6391281027112

Trump also targeted Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., for supporting Massie, calling her “Weak Minded” and suggesting he would consider withdrawing his endorsement if a challenger entered the race against her in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District.

“Boebert is campaigning for the Worst “Republican” Congressman in the History of our Country, Thomas Massie, of the Great Commonwealth of Kentucky, and anybody who can be that dumb deserves a good Primary fight!” Trump wrote in an earlier Saturday night Truth Social post.

“Even though I long ago endorsed Boebert, if the right person came along, it would be my Honor to withdraw that Endorsement, and endorse a good and proper alternative. Just let me know, or announce your Candidacy, and I will be there for you!”

Massie noted Trump is too late to call for a Boebert primary.

RAND PAUL PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR MASSIE AGAINST TRUMP-BACKED CHALLENGER: ‘I’M GOING TO HELP HIM’

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6384818431112

I’ve seen people calling for primary challengers against Boebert online since she got here [Friday],” Massie told reporters after his Kentucky campaign rally Saturday. “Her primary is already closed. So they can call for that. It’s too late.

“And Rand Paul’s not on the ballot this year. You’re going to have to wait two whole years. So I think he should be mending fences with these folks, not trying to burn bridges.”

Trump began the night warning about Boebert and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., stumping for Massie.

“Word is that Rand Paul and Lauren Boebert, two very difficult, and highly unreasonable, Republican Votes, are right now in the Great Commonwealth of Kentucky, which I won by 31 points, parading around like fools for the Worst “Republican” Congressman in the History of our Party!” Trump wrote on Truth Social hours before the Cassidy defeat, blasting Massie as “a disloyal, ungracious, and sanctimonious FOOL, who almost never votes for even the best of Republican Values.”

“The man running against Massie, Ed Gallrein, is a true American Patriot, a Farmer from Kentucky, and a Military Hero. He is loyal, and MAGA all the way — VOTE FOR ED GALLREIN, AND WIPE AWAY THE STENCH OF ONE OF THE WORST CONGRESSMEN IN THE HISTORY OF OUR GREAT PARTY, THOMAS MASSIE. MAY WE NEVER HAVE TO DEAL WITH HIM AGAIN!”

At least 4 killed in one of the largest Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia since start of war

    May 17, 2026 6:53 AM EDT / AP

At least four people, including three near Moscow, died in one of the largest Ukrainian overnight attacks against Russia since the start of the war, according to Russian local authorities.

A woman was killed after a drone hit her home in Khimki, a city just northwest of Moscow, and two men died in the village of Pogorelki 10 km (6 miles) north of the capital, according to local Gov. Andrei Vorobyev. In social media updates, Vorobyev said Ukrainian drones had also damaged unspecified “infrastructure” and several high-rises. In Moscow itself, at least 12 people were wounded in the nighttime strike, mostly near the entrance to the city’s oil refinery, mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported. Sobyanin reported the “technology” of the refinery has not been damaged.

Russian defenses shot down 81 drones headed for Moscow overnight, state agency Tass reported, citing Sobyanin, marking one of the largest attacks on the Russian capital since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

One man was also killed as a drone struck a lorry in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, according to local authorities. Russian air defenses destroyed 556 drones over Russia overnight, the country’s defense ministry said Sunday morning. Shortly after midday local time, it reported that over 1,000 had been shot down or jammed in the previous 24 hours.

Russia’s largest airport — Moscow’s Sheremetyevo — said drone debris had fallen on its premises without causing damage.

Russia attacked Ukraine with 287 drones overnight on Sunday, 279 of which were shot down or jammed, the Ukrainian air force reported.

According to Ukraine’s estate emergency service, the strikes injured 8 people in Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region: three in the regional capital of Dnipro, four in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih, and one in the district of Synelkove.

Residential buildings were damaged in all three locations, the service said.

    • 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals in the spotlight
    • New Orleans-based court known for conservative rulings
    • Supreme Court froze 5th Circuit ruling on abortion pill
    • Numerous appeals of 5th Circuit rulings reach high court

May 17 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to preserve mail access to the abortion pill mifepristone marked the latest time that the nation’s top judicial body has reined in an even more right-leaning appeals court, one nestled in the American South.

The Supreme Court on Thursday put on hold a May 1 ruling by the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that had blocked – albeit briefly – mifepristone from being prescribed through telemedicine and dispensed by mail. Access to mifepristone has been a ‌flashpoint in the U.S. culture wars since the Supreme Court in 2022 allowed states to ban abortion.

The Supreme Court, with its 6-3 conservative majority, has moved U.S. law dramatically rightward in recent years. But the 5th Circuit’s rulings in several key cases have gone beyond what even this conservative Supreme Court will permit, including twice on the abortion pill.

    ‘PUSH THE JURISPRUDENTIAL ENVELOPE’

“The 5th Circuit has been willing in the past decade to push the jurisprudential envelope on social issues pretty heavily towards the political conservative side,” said law professor Sally Brown Richardson of Tulane University Law School in New Orleans.

That trend, Richardson said, has been reflected in the sheer number of appeals of 5th Circuit rulings that the Supreme Court has elected to hear.

The 5th Circuit is one of the 12 regional U.S. appeals courts, all one step below the Supreme Court. It hears cases from Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi, three deeply conservative Southern states. Twelve of its 17 judges were appointed by Republican presidents, including six by Donald Trump.

The 5th Circuit has become a favored destination for conservatives, including activists and Republican politicians, seeking to advance their agenda. It has issued major decisions on issues such as abortion, gun rights and religious liberty, while handing policy setbacks to Trump’s Democratic predecessor Joe Biden including on immigration policies.

In its Thursday action halting the 5th Circuit’s ruling on the abortion pill while a lawsuit by Republican-led Louisiana seeking to curtail access to the medication proceeds, the Supreme Court issued a brief and unsigned order that did not explain its reasoning. Just two of its six conservative justices, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, publicly dissented.

The 5th Circuit’s rulings often are appealed to the Supreme Court by liberal interests. Appeals of 5th Circuit rulings have made up a disproportionate number of cases heard by the Supreme Court in recent years.

During its current nine-month 2025-2026 term, the Supreme Court has heard 10 cases arising from the 5th Circuit, more than from any of the other federal appeals courts.

The same was true of its 2024-2025 term, with 13 cases from the 5th Circuit. The Supreme Court reversed the 5th Circuit in 10 of those cases, according to data collected by the SCOTUSblog website.

“You have several examples of cases where the Supreme Court uses the 5th Circuit to pass itself off as maybe more balanced or moderate,” University of Oklahoma law professor Michael Smith said.

In four cases decided so far this term, the Supreme Court has upheld 5th Circuit rulings in only one of them. Two important cases from the 5th ‌Circuit that are expected to be decided by the Supreme Court by the end of next month include appeals of its decisions that declared unconstitutional a federal ban on users of illegal drugs including marijuana from owning guns and that placed limits on mail-in ballots.

    ‘SOVEREIGN PREROGATIVE’

In the current abortion-pill case, the 5th Circuit had blocked a 2023 Biden-era U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulation that has allowed the drug to be prescribed through telemedicine and dispensed by mail.

Trump-appointed U.S. Circuit Judge Kyle Duncan wrote in that decision that the FDA’s policy likely lacked a scientific basis and undermined Louisiana’s abortion ban implemented after the Supreme Court overturned its 1973 Roe v. Wade precedent that had legalized the procedure nationwide.

“Once lost, that sovereign prerogative of protecting unborn life cannot be regained by legal remedy,” Duncan wrote.

Manufacturers of mifepristone appealed to the Supreme Court on an emergency basis, and it swiftly paused the 5th Circuit ruling.

In 2024, the Supreme Court also overturned, in a unanimous decision, a 5th Circuit ruling that had curtailed access to mifepristone, finding that the anti-abortion groups and doctors who brought a legal challenge to the pill lacked the necessary legal standing to pursue the case.

In 2023, the 5th Circuit declared unconstitutional a federal law that criminalizes firearm ownership for people under domestic violence restraining orders. The following year, the Supreme Court reversed that decision, which had been written by Trump-appointed U.S. Circuit Judge Cory Wilson.

The Supreme Court in 2024 reversed another 5th Circuit ruling that Wilson authored that had declared the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s funding mechanism unconstitutional.

    ‘DISPARAGED AND DESTROYED’

More major cases arising from the 5th Circuit appear headed to the Supreme Court.

The American Civil Liberties Union has vowed to appeal the 5th Circuit’s April ruling that upheld a Texas law requiring public schools to display the biblical Ten Commandments in classrooms in a case testing the principle of separation of church and state.

That 9-7 decision was also written by Duncan and joined by all of his fellow Trump appointees on the 5th Circuit, including U.S. Circuit Judges James Ho and Andrew Oldham. All three are considered possible Supreme Court nominees if Trump gets to make another appointment.

In a speech in April, Ho defended judges who embrace originalism, a legal philosophy favored by conservatives that seeks to interpret the U.S. Constitution based on how its text was understood at the time of its drafting.

Ho said originalist judges are “disparaged and destroyed” when they issue rulings disfavored by “cultural elites.” Ho also said “that it is too often, for too many of us, easier to do what is popular than to do what is right.”

“Judges must not be afraid of being booed,” Ho said.
