https://www.cbsnews.com/video/parents-are-at-war-with-screen-time-heres-how-to-help-teens-curb-the-prolonged-habit/
3 New Jersey teens took part in a weeklong experiment to curb screen time. It worked.
March 12, 2026 / 7:39 PM EDT / CBS News
Clifton, New Jersey — At Clifton High School in Clifton, New Jersey, senior Gianna Colon is a three-sport athlete, sophomore Sebastian Fazio loves math and baseball, and sophomore Hamza Ramach is in band and is a goalie on the school hockey team.
What do they have in common? They are three productive students who also struggle with screen time.
Colon told CBS News that when she spends too much time scrolling on her phone, it makes her “feel drained.”
According to students, they can spend anywhere from four to 13 hours per day on their phones, with bedtime being the biggest downfall.
“Sometimes, when I’m going to bed, I watch for a little bit, but then I get a little addicted,” said Fazio.
Ramach admitted that he doesn’t believe it is possible for him to cut down on screen time on his own accord.
https://www.cbsnews.com/video/parents-are-at-war-with-screen-time-heres-how-to-help-teens-curb-the-prolonged-habit/
For one week, the three agreed not to take their phones to bed, and to try different tools to reduce screen time during the day.
Colon tested out Brick, a square-shaped device, external to your phone, that can be used to block specific apps. The device can be left at home. To unblock the distracting apps, the phone must be tapped against the external device.
Ramach tried ScreenZen, a free app that takes a mindful approach to limiting screen time, by asking you to wait before opening distracting apps.
Fazio was shown how to use the grayscale mode on his phone, which removes the color, turning the screen to black-and-white.
“It does not look good,” Fazio said when he saw Instagram in grayscale. “…It takes away all the joy in it.”
The teens recorded video diaries three days into the experiment,
“I’ve been doing other things like diamond painting,” Colon said in her video.
Ramach said he had “been focusing more on school work, less distractions, more sleep.”
Fazio, meanwhile, said that he had “been more energetic waking up,” and also feeling like he had “been communicating more with family and friends.”
A week in, the reviews were still glowing.
Colon said Brick “definitely” took away the temptation of using certain apps, because there was a physical barrier, so she couldn’t unlock them while she was at school.
“It was honestly pretty good,” Colon said. “It definitely helped me be more productive without my phone.”
Ramach said ScreenZen “was great.”
“It was tempting to unblock the apps, but I went through it,” Ramach said, adding that his father noticed a positive difference in his behavior.
“I wanted to go to practice in the morning,” Ramach said. “He was like, ‘In the morning, what?’”
Fazio described his experience with grayscale as “pretty good,” saying his screen use “went down a lot.”
“I was at three hours before, and I’m at 20 minutes per day,” Fazio said, adding that the difference felt “great.”
Asked what she wanted other kids to know after taking on this challenge, Colon said: “You don’t need to depend on your phone for everything. Like there’s so much more out in the world…besides just sitting on your phone for hours and scrolling through TikTok or Instagram.”

Before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, an average of 100 vessels per day would safely traverse the Strait of Hormuz. On Wednesday, only one or two ships crossed the narrow waterway, according to MarineTraffic, a ship tracking website.
Reopening the strait, which ordinarily handles some 20% of daily global oil shipments, is widely viewed as essential to bringing down the soaring energy prices caused by the Iran war.
In an interview with CBS News’ Major Garrett, American Petroleum Institute CEO Mike Sommers on Wednesday characterized the strait’s closure as a “nightmare scenario” for the global economy. “There is no replacing the 20 million barrels of oil that go through the Strait of Hormuz,” Sommers said.
Here’s what experts said must happen for oil tankers to start sailing again.
Why are ships stopped?
The Strait of Hormuz is currently too risky for commercial ships to navigate, with suspected Iranian drones on Wednesday striking at least three ships in and around the channel. Many insurers have also withdrawn coverage for tankers in the region.
“In the end, it’s all about perception, because our first priority is the protection of human life and our seafarers,” Jerry Kalogiratos, CEO of Capital Clean Energy Carriers, a shipping company based in Greece, told CBS News.
When will tankers return to the strait?
Kalogiratos said he is looking for clear signals that the Strait of Hormuz is safe for marine traffic.
“Let’s say there is a ceasefire overnight, and Iran says it’s safe. Then our ships would be the first to make the transit,” he said.
Not surprisingly, Kalogiratos is also keeping a close eye on the handful of ships that are crossing the waterway to see if they avoid attacks.
A succession of safe crossings of the strait would encourage more ships to sail, according to Vikas Dwivedi, energy strategist at Macquarie Group, a financial services firm.
“You’d need more than just one or two for a couple of days — you would want to see it building,” he told CBS News. “You want corroboration that there are no tricks being played and that ships leaving the Strait of Hormuz are arriving at destination ports.”
By contrast, Kalogiratos takes less comfort from the White House’s offer to insure ships traveling through the Persian Gulf. The Trump administration has also offered U.S. Navy escorts to protect ships from attack when navigating the channel.
“We need to feel confident that the lives of our partners aboard our vessels are safe,” he said.
Looking for de-escalation
Michael Ryan, head of freight at market intelligence provider Sparta Commodities, told CBS News that shipping companies would have to see a sustained reduction in military threat from Iran to start sailing again. That would encourage insurers to re-enter the region and bring premiums down to a manageable level, mitigating the financial risks of braving the waterway.
For now, achieving that level of security seems improbable. On Thursday, newly appointed Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said in a statement that the strait must remain shut, according to state-run media.
“Until that threat is credibly lifted, either through a ceasefire or a negotiated arrangement, commercial operators of the vessels won’t return in meaningful numbers,” Ryan told CBS News.
How will we know ships are sailing?
Such vessels are equipped with Automated Identification System (AIS) trackers that allow their locations to be detected.
While tracking systems are normally activated, some ships have deactivated their AIS in an effort to pass through the strait undetected, Nikos Pothitakis, a spokesperson for Kpler, which owns MarineTraffic, told CBS News.
The usual flow of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is currently nonexistent, according to MarineTraffic, which monitors factors including a vessel’s location, load size and speed.
“Normally, you would see all of these little dots of triangles moving fluidly around the strait,” Ryan said. “Right now, there are loads of tankers clustered together on either side of the strait, where they are sitting anchored.”

FBI closes 2020 election fraud inquiry ordered by Nevada’s top federal prosecutor, sources say
2026-03-12T16:49:53-0400 / CBS News
The FBI has closed a politically charged voter fraud inquiry sought by Nevada’s top federal prosecutor, after finding only 38 non-citizens may have voted in the 2020 presidential election, sources with direct knowledge of the probe told CBS News.
The FBI ended the inquiry in late January, after Sigal Chattah, the first assistant U.S. attorney in Nevada, had ordered the bureau in July to open a 2020 election fraud probe that she claimed could help flip a key congressional seat in Republicans’ favor. She also said it could ensnare President Trump’s Democratic opponents — state attorneys general who had gone after fake electors — sources previously told CBS News.
At that time, she provided the FBI with a thumb drive of data compiled by the Republican Party that she claimed would show that non-citizens had voted in the 2020 election and that people on Indian reservations were accepting cash for ballots, the sources previously said.
But an FBI review of Nevada voter roll data, compared against Department of Homeland Security citizenship data, only identified 38 possible non-citizen voters. In addition, FBI agents told Chattah’s office that the statute of limitations to pursue any possible case had also expired, which made bringing a case untenable, according to sources familiar with the case.
Chattah did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The results of the inquiry were reported earlier by the Washington Post.
The lack of any basis to pursue voter fraud investigations into the 2020 election in Nevada raises further questions about why similar inquiries are being pursued in other swing states, including Georgia and Arizona, and why there is probable cause to suggest fraud occurred in those other states.
Earlier this year the FBI executed a search warrant in Fulton County, Georgia, to gain access to ballots and other records that was premised in part on claims made by White House attorney Kurt Olsen, who has frequently made unproven claims about widespread election fraud in the 2020 election.
Then in Arizona, state Senate President Warren Petersen revealed that he had recently received a grand jury subpoena seeking records in connection with the Arizona state Senate’s 2020 audit of Maricopa County, and he said that he had turned them over to the FBI.
CBS News could not determine why the Fulton County, Georgia, or Arizona cases have proceeded, and what distinguishes them from the review in Nevada by the FBI.
“The Justice Department is committed to upholding the integrity of our electoral system and will continue to prioritize efforts to ensure all elections remain free, fair, and transparent,” a Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News.
The FBI in Nevada declined to comment.
But some election experts suggest the legal system in some states is working more effectively to defend their elections amid investigations into already de-bunked claims.
“The 2020 election has been investigated robustly in Nevada and across the country,” said Dax Goldstein, the Election Protection Program Director for the States United Democracy Center.
“I think that in Nevada we saw the system work, and in Georgia, I think the system didn’t work properly.”
Mr. Trump, meanwhile, is pushing Congress to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which would require Americans to show proof of citizenship in person to register to vote in federal elections and implement photo ID requirements for voting.
Democrats have warned the bill could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters.
Conflicts of interest for Chattah
The fact that the FBI in Nevada even opened a preliminary assessment into debunked claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Mr. Trump — and kept Chattah looped into the findings — will likely renew fresh concerns about whether her involvement violates federal ethics rules and rules of professional conduct for attorneys.
Before she was appointed interim U.S. attorney, Chattah worked as a defense lawyer representing the National Republican Committee and the Nevada Republican Party, and she also defended one of the men accused of acting as a fake elector to try to sway the results of the 2020 election in Mr. Trump’s favor. The fake elector was criminally charged for his role by Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford’s office.
Chattah also served as a chairwoman for the Republican National Committee in Nevada, and she previously ran for state attorney general against Ford and lost.
Chattah is currently serving as the office’s first assistant U.S. attorney, after a federal court declared her appointment as interim U.S. attorney unlawful.
“The Department follows the guidance of career ethics officials on all recusal matters,” a Justice Department spokesperson told CBS News.
George Kelesis, a defense attorney in Nevada who also represented one of the fake electors in Nevada, has since been appointed by Mr. Trump to serve as the state’s U.S. attorney.
“If we want people to trust the government and the government’s judgment, then the government has to make sure that it avoids conflicts of interest,” said Nancy Rapoport, a law professor at the University of Nevada who specializes in legal ethics.
“You just don’t want to raise a question about fairness. The government has so many resources compared to private citizens,” she said. “You don’t want people scratching their heads and asking ‘was this above board?’”
Chattah previously asked the FBI to review data compiled by the Nevada Republican Party that she alleged contained evidence showing that people living in the U.S. illegally cast ballots in the 2020 election and that members of Indian tribes allegedly received cash for ballots.
She told senior Justice Department officials that she hoped the probe would allow Republicans to win back a congressional seat held by a Democrat, and exonerate Nevada’s fake electors, one of whom she represented in private practice, sources with direct knowledge of the matter previously told CBS News.
She also suggested using the probe to investigate other state attorneys general — including Ford — to establish they and the Biden White House had unlawfully conspired against the United States.
Chattah’s decision to launch the probe came just days after the deputy attorney general’s office issued a memo ordering her to recuse herself in six other civil and criminal cases — all of which involved people who had political ties to Chattah before she joined the Justice Department, according to both documents and sources familiar with the matter.
Despite that warning, Chattah pressed ahead and requested the probe into the 2020 election and she also continued trying to reach out to other Justice Department staff who had worked on at least one of the matters from which she was explicitly recused, multiple sources tell CBS News.
Screen grab from X, March 12, 2026
On Thursday, Chattah used her X account — which still refers to her as a U.S. attorney — to comment on one of the six cases from which she was ordered to recuse.
The case involves the recent indictment of Nye County Republican Commissioner Leonardo Blundo, who is accused of committing fraud against a government program that gave small businesses loans to keep them afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Blundo previously gushed over Chattah’s initial appointment as interim U.S. attorney in a press release, referring to her as a “fierce patriot” with a “brilliant legal mind.”
On Thursday, Chattah reposted a news article on Nye’s indictment, saying, “Fraud will not be tolerated in our community — regardless of the position or identity of those involved.”
The press release issued by her office announcing the indictment contained no comment from Chattah.
Her social media post was later removed, not long after CBS News sought comment from the Justice Department.
“A lawyer who is entering the government shall not participate in the same matters that she worked on in the private sector, so if she worked on anything to do with the election in the private sector, then she shouldn’t work on it in the government,” said Richard Painter, who was the White House ethics lawyer during President George W. Bush’s tenure.
He added that while it’s possible that Attorney General Pam Bondi may have granted a waiver to allow her to participate, such an act would be highly unusual.

White House mulls defunding civil rights election observer program that aims to protect minority voting rights, sources say
Updated on: March 12, 2026 / 6:19 PM EDT / CBS News
The White House is considering ending funding for a longtime civil rights election program aimed at protecting the rights of minority populations to vote, sources familiar with the matter tell CBS News.
The federal observer program, authorized under the Voting Rights Act and launched in 1966, is an Office of Personnel Management operation that partners with the Justice Department to send neutral, third-party observers to monitor election sites to ensure voters don’t experience discrimination at the polls — whether it’s due to race, language barriers or disabilities.
The observers, who are both recruited and trained by the Office of Personnel Management, are expected to watch, listen and take notes without interfering in the voting process. Those observers then turn over their findings to the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
The White House is exploring whether to cut spending for the program, sources say, in a discussion that comes as the country gears up for crucial midterm elections this November that will determine which party controls Congress.
As Republicans worry about the prospect of losing control of the House or Senate, President Trump is being lobbied by far-right activists who are encouraging him to declare a national emergency in order to assert federal control over voting in America.
At the same time, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division is suing more than two dozen states in a bid to collect sensitive voter roll data that the Department of Homeland Security wants to use for criminal and immigration enforcement efforts, according to sources with direct knowledge of the matter.
The federal observer program is relatively inexpensive — Congress allocates several million dollars for it each year, a former federal official said.
An OPM official confirmed the program is being evaluated, noting that it has only been used at a handful of locations since 2013 that are under a court order to do so. The cost to send observers to those locations has risen from about $2.2 million to $2.5 million, the official said.
The White House referred CBS News’ request for comment to the Justice Department.
The Voting Rights Act was enacted in 1965 to prevent states with a long history of discriminatory election practices from disenfranchising primarily Black voters.
Originally the Justice Department used a formula to determine which states and municipalities had a history of discriminatory practices. Those who met the criteria were then required by the law to obtain preclearance from the Justice Department before making changes to any of its voting laws.
At one time, the Justice Department sent OPM-trained federal observers to over 100 counties across the nation on Election Day, according to data seen by CBS News. During the 2012 elections, more than 1,000 federal observers were sent to polling sites across America, a former federal official told CBS News.
A large portion of the law was gutted by a 2013 Supreme Court decision, Shelby County v. Holder, which found that the formula used by the Justice Department to ascertain which states or counties had a history of discrimination was outdated and unconstitutional.
That decision in turn has substantially hindered the Justice Department’s ability to enforce its provisions.
Without the ability to review potentially discriminatory new voting laws from going into effect, the Justice Department or private parties such as legal advocacy groups must now rely on trying to litigate them after they’ve been passed.
Now, federal observers may only be sent into jurisdictions in which there is a court order.
There are only a few court orders in effect that call for the use of federal observers: Union County, New Jersey, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and two areas in rural Alaska.
In 2016, more than 300 federal observers were dispatched to polling places, while approximately 250 were used during elections that took place in 2024, the former federal official said.
Since that court decision, the Justice Department has heavily relied on its own election-monitoring program, in which it sends lawyers from the Civil Rights Division to polling places that are not eligible for the assignment of federal observers.
A Justice Department spokesperson said the department has no plans to end its own monitoring program in the Civil Rights Division.
“The Department of Justice is committed to ensuring our elections remain free, fair, and transparent, and has no plans to end its monitorship program which is integral to assessing compliance with federal voting rights laws across the country,” the spokesperson said.
If the White House eliminates funding for the federal observer program, it will strike another blow to the department’s ability to protect Americans’ rights under the Voting Rights Act.
Despite the existence of the Justice Department’s own election monitoring program, the federal observer program has historically been a favored approach for a few reasons.
First, federal observers are regarded as neutral and do not work for the Justice Department section that also litigates against counties and states over voting rights issues.
And by law, federal observers are allowed to be located inside polling places.
In recent years, Republican-controlled states, like Texas and Florida, have refused to permit Justice Department election monitors to enter polling sites.
Further, even when the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division was fully staffed, it often lacked the manpower to cover all of its election-monitoring, forcing the department to seek volunteers elsewhere in the department, according to sources with direct knowledge of the matter.
At this point, the Civil Rights Division now has lost more than 75% of its historic staffing levels.

Trump nominates State Dept official to lead diminished US global media agency
March 12, 2026 10:27 PM UTC / Reuters
WASHINGTON, March 12 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump nominated a senior State Department official to take on the additional role of leading the U.S. Agency for Global Media, the department said on Thursday, after a federal judge invalidated the previous Trump-appointed CEO’s staff cuts at the agency.
Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers, who has led the administration’s campaign against European Internet regulations that Washington says constitute censorship, was named as Trump’s pick to take over the agency that oversees U.S.-funded media outlets like Voice of America that are aimed at populations in oppressive countries and reach hundreds of millions of people.

“USAGM’s mission has long been closely aligned with the Department of State, and the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy has always held consultative authorities with the agency,” a State Department spokesperson said.
“If confirmed as the CEO of USAGM, Under Secretary Rogers would be uniquely well positioned to significantly strengthen coordination between U.S. international broadcasting and American public diplomacy in the national interest.”
Rogers must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate before she can assume the role.
The Department of Justice said in a court filing on Thursday that Deputy Secretary of State Michael Rigas would perform the duties of the agency’s CEO in the interim.
Kari Lake, who was appointed by Trump as a senior adviser to the agency, ushered in sweeping cuts to USAGM’s staff and operations at outlets that also include Radio Free Asia and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that broadcast in 64 languages.
U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth on Saturday granted a summary judgment in favor of plaintiffs, including VOA journalists and a union representing federal employees. They had argued that Lake’s appointment as acting CEO and actions she took in that role ran afoul of the Federal Vacancies Reform Act and the Constitution’s Appointments Clause, dealing another blow to the Trump administration’s attempts to diminish various government agencies.
Lake, in a post on X, said what she called her efforts at “right-sizing” the agency were “so effective over the last year that the Deep State has done everything they can to stop us, including launching malicious lawsuits at me and the agency.”

(Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel,TRAP)任务。

U.S. military plane crashes in Iraq as status of crew is unknown, officials said
March 12, 2026 / 6:56 PM EDT / CBS News
Washington — An American military aerial refueling tanker that was involved in the U.S. military operation in Iran crashed in Western Iraq on Thursday, according to multiple U.S. officials who spoke to CBS News.
Recovery efforts are underway in the area where a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker crashed. The status of the crew is unknown at this time. A second Stratotanker was damaged but landed safely.
The first plane went down near Turaibil, which is along the Iraqi-Jordanian border, an Iraqi intelligence source told CBS News.
According to flight tracking service FlightRadar24, a KC-135 tanker declared an emergency before landing in Tel Aviv Thursday evening.
U.S. Central Command released a statement Thursday afternoon saying both aircraft were involved in the same incident, and it was not caused by hostile fire or friendly fire.
This marks the fourth publicly acknowledged aircraft to crash as a part of Operation Epic Fury. Last Monday, the U.S. military also confirmed that three F-15E Strike Eagles were downed in a friendly-fire incident involving Kuwait, but all 6 crew members safely ejected.
Each branch of service has their own terminology for launching recovery missions of a downed aircraft but generally they’re called Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel, or TRAP, missions. These types of missions rapidly deploy after an aircraft crash and can be dangerous, as U.S. forces race to secure the crash site before enemy forces can. The goal is to retrieve pilots or crew members — who may be injured or deceased — and retrieve or destroy sensitive equipment that remains intact.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
