Cuba’s national energy grid collapses sparking nationwide blackout

    March 16, 2026 / 3:01 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Officials in Cuba reported an island-wide blackout Monday in the country of some 11 million people as its energy and economic crises deepen. Cuba has blamed its woes on a U.S. energy blockade after President Trump in January warned of tariffs on any country that sells or provides oil to it.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines on X noted a “complete disconnection” of the country’s electrical system and said it was investigating. Officials were implementing protocols to restore the system, the post said.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Friday said the island had not received oil shipments in more than three months and was operating on solar power, natural gas and thermoelectric plants, and the government has had to postpone surgeries for tens of thousands of people.

A massive outage over a week ago affected the island’s west, leaving millions without power. In 2025, nearly exactly a year ago, Cuba suffered a massive outage in western Cuba.

Cuba has relied heavily on foreign assistance and oil shipments from allies like Mexico, Russia and Venezuela. But critical oil shipments from Venezuela were halted after the U.S. attacked the South American country in early January and arrested its then-president, Nicolás Maduro.

While Cuba produces 40% of its petroleum and has been generating its own power, it hasn’t been sufficient to meet demand as its electric grid continues to crumble.

In recent days, videos circulating on social media have shown residents in Havana and other cities banging pots and pans in protest,CBS News Miami reported. The traditional form of public dissent known as a “cacerolazo” reflects growing frustration as the country struggles withelectricity outages, food shortages, and deteriorating living conditions.

Blackouts have previously prompted anti-government demonstrations in 2021, 2022, and 2024.

On Friday, Díaz-Canel confirmed that Cuba washolding talks with the U.S. governmentas the problems continue to deepen.

Earlier this year, a U.S. official told CBS News the Trump administration does not seek to trigger a collapse of the Cuban government, but rather to negotiate with Havana to transition away from its authoritarian communist system.

    Image 43: placeholder

    Image 45: placeholder

Senate Democrats say they want to end the government shutdown but have repeatedly blocked GOP attempts to reopen the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as they push for immigration enforcement reforms.

On Friday, Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., said at a news conference following an antisemitic attack on the Temple Israel synagogue in her state that “certainly” Congress must fund DHS.

However, Slotkin and most Senate Democrats have voted four times to block DHS funding, including several attempts to temporarily reopen the agency while negotiations continue.

    Image 43: placeholder

Slotkin is just one of several Senate Democrats calling for an end to the shutdown. Republicans argue the votes are part of a broader Democratic strategy to blame them for blocking efforts to reopen DHS.

Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., accused Democrats of trying to shift blame for the shutdown.

“Well, that’s what they do, right? And they’re good at it. They’re really good at it,” he told Fox News Digital. “And the big difference is they have 90% of the legacy media backing them up.”

“So it’s hard, but again, four times this afternoon, the Democrats voted against funding DHS,” he continued.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., accused Republicans of using the federal workers of a variety of agencies under DHS, like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as “hostages.”

“I remind my Republican colleagues, we’re going to be back here again and again, winning this debate and eventually winning the American people,” Schumer said.

But Slotkin and others are now signaling an openness to funding Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which many Democrats have sought to deny federal funding to, in addition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

    Image 45: placeholder

“We need, in my view, to cut away all the conversation on ICE, which is its own conversation,” Slotkin said at the news conference.

Republicans have sharply criticized Democrats for denying funding to DHS despite a series of terror-related attacks across the country and a heightened threat environment amid the U.S.-Israeli conflict involving Iran.

An alleged ISIS-inspired bomb plot in New York City and a deadly shooting involving a convicted Islamic State supporter at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, rocked the country last week.

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said he supports funding DHS after voting against full-year appropriations for the department Thursday.

“I think we should,” Warner replied when asked if Democrats should break the deadlock by CBS News’ Margaret Brennan on Sunday.

“What we have offered is let’s pay TSA, let’s pay FEMA, let’s pay … the Coast Guard, let’s pay CISA. I’d even say let’s pay Customs and Border Patrol,” Warner said. “If we can’t agree on ICE reforms, let’s pay everybody else.”

However, it is not clear that enough Democrats would be willing to fund CBP while still negotiating reforms to ICE to end the shutdown. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., has been the lone Democrat so far to cross-party lines and support a full-year DHS appropriations bill.

“Democrats’ position is simple: we want reforms to rein in ICE and Border Patrol,” Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said on the Senate floor Thursday. “We also want TSA and FEMA funded — but we are not going to be blackmailed into cutting a blank check for ICE to get it done.”

Senate Republicans have rejected Democrats’ attempts to fund every agency under DHS except for those handling immigration enforcement.

Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., last week blocked an effort by Murray to fund the non-immigration portions of DHS.

Republicans’ resistance to efforts to partially reopen the agency comes as negotiations between the White House and Democrats have stalled.

“Members need to get in a room, have tough conversations, and figure out a pathway for the American people,” Britt told Fox News Digital. “Their safety and security should matter more than politics in November, and unfortunately, Democrats continue to try to take hostages.”

Far-left House Dem pushes land reparations for descendants of American slaves

Michigan Democrat’s legislation faces steep obstacles in GOP-controlled House

    By Adam Pack, Elizabeth Elkind
    Fox News

    Published March 16, 2026 2:45pm EDT

There’s a new push to give federal reparations to descendants of slaves among congressional Democrats, this time being led by progressive Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich.

Thanedar introduced a bill late last week that would set up a federal commission to “study and distribute land reparations” for the descendants of slaves in the U.S. The legislation has no formal backers and faces steep obstacles to advancing in the Republican-controlled House.

“The history of historical injustices against Black Americans by our federal government is nothing short of shameful,” Thanedar told Fox News Digital in a statement. “Formerly enslaved families were promised land as a means of securing freedom and self-sufficiency, but these promises were broken, and the devastating economic effects of this broken promise is still felt today.”

Thanedar’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding how the legislation would work in practice.

Protesters in San Francisco march in support of slavery reparations.(Getty Images)

Reparations refer to financial compensation for Black Americans intended to address economic harms their ancestors experienced during slavery and the Jim Crow era. Republicans oppose the idea over eligibility concerns and their belief that present-day Americans should not be responsible for harms committed generations ago.

The reparations push comes as Thanedar, a two-term lawmaker, is facing a serious challenge from the left ahead of Michigan’s August 2026 primary. State Rep. Donavan McKinney, D-Mich., is vying to unseat Thanedar in the deep-blue district with the backing of Sen. Bernie Sanders I-Vt., and the progressive group, Justice Democrats despite Thanedar’s own progressive credentials.

But Thanedar’s support for Israel has served to alienate him from the furthest-left flank of his party, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., a fellow member of his state’s delegation. He left the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), of which Tlaib is a member, after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel in 2023.

Tlaib is also supporting McKinney’s campaign.

Thanedar, an Indian American, has supported slavery reparations since before his congressional tenure.

“Every other community has Japanese Americans got their reparations, American Indians got their reparations,” the Michigan Democrat said in 2022 while running for Congress. “This is something that needs to be handled in a fair way.”

Rep. Shri Thanedar argues reparations are necessary to correct a “broken promise” to descendants of slaves.(Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc. via Getty Images)

Thanedar is an original cosponsor of H.R. 40, also known as the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act, which aims to kickstart the reparations process for descendants of slaves. The Michigan Democrat is also a proud supporter of more expansive legislation that aims to transfer $14 trillion in estimated losses to reparations recipients.

The legislation was originally introduced by Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., in 2023, when it was similarly dead on arrival in the GOP-controlled House.

Progressive Democrats have long advocated for the passage of reparations legislation but have encountered resistance from members of the party’s moderate flank who view the idea as politically toxic.

Gov. Wes Moore, D-Md., vetoed legislation in 2025 that would have enacted a reparations commission at the state level. Moore is notably one of the only Black Democratic governors in the country and is rumored to have presidential ambitions.

Thanedar has also introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump and other Trump administration figures, despite opposition from House Democratic leadership.

Supreme Court to review Trump’s effort to end deportation protections for migrants from Haiti and Syria

PUBLISHED Mar 16, 2026, 3:52 PM ET / By John Fritze

The Supreme Court announced Monday it will decide whether President Donald Trump can terminate temporary deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals, agreeing to hear arguments next month on an issue that has been central to the administration’s immigration agenda.

The decision came in a pair of emergency appeals involving 6,000 Syrians and some 350,000 Haitians who have lived in the US legally for years.

The court deferred a request from the administration to remove protections for those people now while it considers the bigger question of whether a president may end the temporary protections more broadly. That means the people at issue in the case will retain their legal protections for now.

    Ad Feedback

The court’s argument calendar was already set for the term that will end in June and its unusual decision to hear arguments in the case in April likely underscored that several similar cases challenging the administration’s moves are pending in lower federal courts and likely would have eventually reached the high court anyway.

[Related article Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Ketanji Brown Jackson Kavanaugh and Jackson appearance gets testy when emergency docket comes up 3 min read]

In the Syrian case, Trump filed the emergency appeal at the Supreme Court in February, urging the justices to allow his administration to end Temporary Protected Status for the Syrians. TPS allows people who arrived from certain countries at times of upheaval to temporarily live and work in the US legally. As part of a broader effort to curb immigration, Trump has sought to end the status for multiple groups.

The case involving TPS for Haitians arrived at the Supreme Court last week. That appeal from the administration followed a scathing ruling from a federal district court in Washington, DC, in February that blocked the administration from letting Temporary Protected Status expire for Haitian nationals.

The 6-3 conservative Supreme Court has granted the administration deference to cancel those designations in the past, including in a case involving Venezuelans with TPS status that the court decided in May. It reiterated that position in a second emergency ruling in October.

TPS recipients are vetted and are ineligible if they’ve been convicted of any felony or more than one misdemeanor in the US. The Homeland Security secretary has discretion to designate a country for TPS. Critics, including DHS officials, say the designations were never intended to be permanent.

By Elizabeth Elkind, Alex Miller | Fox News
    Published March 16, 2026 2:22pm EDT

(J. Scott Applewhite/AP Photo)

Fired DHS chief Kristi Noem faces criminal referral from congressional Democrats

By Elizabeth Elkind, Alex Miller | Fox News
    Published March 16, 2026 2:22pm EDT

Congressional Democrats are seeking criminal charges against Kristi Noem weeks after President Donald Trump ousted her from leadership of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the top Democrats on their respective chambers’ Judiciary Committees, sent a letter to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday accusing Noem of lying to Congress during back-to-back hearings earlier this month.

“A number of her statements appear to violate criminal statutes prohibiting perjury and knowingly making false statements to Congress,” the letter said. “After months of evading our Committees’ requests to testify in routine oversight hearings, Secretary Noem made a series of demonstrably false statements in a brazen attempt to undermine critical congressional oversight of the Department of Homeland Security.”

The top Democrats on the Senate and House Judiciary committees charged that there were four categories of statements Noem made during her testimony before the respective panels where the DHS chief could have perjured herself.

DHS DEFENDS MCLAUGHLIN AFTER ALLEGATIONS HUSBAND’S COMPANY PROFITED MILLIONS FROM AD CONTRACTS: ‘BASELESS’

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem appears for an oversight hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, March 3, 2026.(J. Scott Applewhite/AP Photo)

Among those answers the lawmakers scrutinized were whether DHS follows court orders, Corey Lewandowski’s role in DHS contracts, whether immigration enforcement has detained U.S. citizens, and most notably the contracting process for a $220 million ad campaign heavily featuring Noem.

The ad campaign, in particular, was an explosive moment during Noem’s hearing earlier this month when Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., pressed her on whether there was a competitive bid process for the contracts and the substantial cash flow.

Noem told the panel that the contract did go through a competitive process, “and career officials at the Department chose who would do those advertising commercials.” When asked if President Donald Trump knew about the ad campaign and its eye-popping sum, Noem said he did.

Trump contradicted that statement in an interview with Reuters, and Kennedy argued that it was “hard to believe” the president would give it the green light.

“It’s something we have to defend. I’m on the Appropriations Committee. I mean, my research shows that you did not bid them out,” Kennedy said.

He alleged that the group that received “most of the money” had direct ties to former DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin and her husband, Benjamin Yoho, who runs the company.

KRISTI NOEM FIRED FROM HOMELAND SECURITY POST AMID RECENT TURMOIL

“Even if Secretary Noem was the one telling the truth about the President’s knowledge, and she may well have been, she flatly misrepresented that the contract had been subject to a competitive bid,” Durbin and Raskin wrote.

Making false statements to Congress is classified as a felony, and a guilty verdict carries up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

But the Trump administration is sticking by Noem. A DHS spokesperson told Fox News Digital, “Any claim that Secretary Noem committed perjury is categorically FALSE.”

Still, Democrats suggested that their effort would not end with the Trump administration, writing, “While we have low expectations that you will pursue this matter given your partisan weaponization of the Department of Justice, we note that the statute of limitations for perjury and for knowingly and willfully making false statements to Congress is five years.”

Trump announced earlier this month that Noem would no longer serve as DHS secretary and instead take on a new role as special envoy to the Shield of the Americas, a military coalition formed by the Republican president.

It comes after mounting criticism from both sides of the aisle over Noem’s handling of the department and its enforcement of Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

Trump instead nominated Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., to take over the department. His confirmation hearing is expected this week.

Top Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino plans to retire, sources say

Top Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino, who led controversial immigration sweeps in Democratic-led cities, has told people he plans to retire at the end of the month, according to two sources familiar with the discussions.

Bovino has not yet submitted the required retirement paperwork, leaving open the possibility that the plan may change.

Bovino was nearly three decades into his career with the US Border Patrol when he was plucked last year from his position as chief patrol agent of the agency’s El Centro sector in Southern California to lead the highly visible mass deployments of federal law enforcement in cities including Los Angeles; Chicago; Charlotte, North Carolina; New Orleans; and Minneapolis.

His conduct during the Chicago operation drew stern rebukes from a federal judge, who ruled that his descriptions of events weren’t supported by video evidence.

In January, following the shooting deaths of two US citizens in Minneapolis by federal agents, he returned to his border sector as White House border czar Tom Homan took charge in Minnesota.

Bovino’s expected departure also coincides with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s ouster. Bovino reported directly to Noem while he deployed around the country to helm the administration’s immigration crackdown, frustrating some veteran federal immigration authorities concerned over the aggressive tactics.

The administration has since adopted a more targeted approach, foregoing the broad immigration sweeps from the last year.

CNN reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

Justice Department asks Judge Boasberg to reconsider order quashing Powell subpoenas

DOJ lawyers argued that the court ‘applied an incorrect legal standard’ in the ruling that quashed subpoenas into Fed Chair Jerome Powell

    By Breanne Deppisch, Bill Mears
    Fox News
    Published March 16, 2026 1:26pm EDT

Lawyers for the Trump administration on Monday asked U.S. District Judge James Boasberg to reconsider his order that quashed grand jury subpoenas of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, appearing to make good on a vow from U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro to appeal the order to a higher court.

In the Justice Department’s motion for reconsideration that was submitted Monday, prosecutors argued that the court “applied an incorrect legal standard, erred with respect to certain facts, and overlooked other relevant facts.”

They argued that a subpoena should be allowed when there is even a “reasonable possibility” that the category of materials the government seeks will produce information “relevant to the general subject of the grand jury’s investigation,” and even where a subpoena recipient “proposes a plausible theory of an ulterior motive.”

EX-JUDGES BLAST TOP TRUMP DOJ OFFICIAL FOR DECLARING ‘WAR’ ON COURTS

The filing, submitted Monday, comes two days after Boasberg blocked a pair of grand jury subpoenas issued to the Federal Reserve Board, concluding that they were merely a “pretext” to pressure the Fed’s Powell into lowering interest rates or resigning from the head of the nation’s central bank.

The Federal Reserve Board, DOJ argued Monday, has “never disputed that the subpoenas sought only materials directly related to the subjects of the grand jury’s investigation: the over budget renovations — estimated at over $1 billion, outrageous even by D.C. standards — as well as Chair Powell’s congressional testimony.”

The request comes days after Boasberg issued a ruling blocking Pirro’s office from moving ahead with a subpoena of records and testimony related to the investigation of the central bank. He said in the newly unsealed ruling that the Justice Department offered “no evidence whatsoever” that Powell committed any crime “other than displeasing” Trump.

BIDEN-APPOINTED FEDERAL JUDGE RULES TRUMP’S ‘THIRD COUNTRY’ DEPORTATION POLICY IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL

Judge James E. Boasberg, chief judge of the Federal District Court in D.C., stands for a portrait.(Washington Post via Getty)

“Did prosecutors issue those subpoenas for a proper purpose? The Court finds that they did not,” he said. “There is abundant evidence that the subpoenas’ dominant (if not sole) purpose is to harass and pressure Powell either to yield to the President or to resign and make way for a Fed Chair who will.”

The ruling came after Pirro opened a criminal inquiry into Powell’s June 2025 testimony before the Senate Banking Committee in January, centered on the Fed’s years-long renovation of its headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Powell revealed the investigation publicly in January, which he described as an attack on the Fed’s independence.

Pirro said Friday that the Justice Department would appeal the ruling to a higher court, blasting the order as “outrageous.”

“This process has been arbitrarily undermined by an activist judge,” she said at a news conference Friday, arguing that Boasberg “put himself at the entrance door to the grand jury, slamming that door shut — irrespective of the legal process — and thus preventing the grand jury from doing the work that it does.”

TOP US COURT HANDS TRUMP A WIN ON DEPORTATIONS AS SCOTUS CHALLENGE LOOMS

U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., Jeanine Pirro delivers remarks in D.C.(Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

Any appeal could prolong Trump’s efforts to remove Powell from the Fed and replace him with his pick — former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh — as Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C. remarked on social media Friday.

Trump also took aim at Boasberg on Truth Social on Sunday night, accusing him of suffering “from the highest level of Trump Derangement Syndrome” and someone the president claimed “has been ‘after’ my people, and me, for years.”

Boasberg used last week’s order to tick through many of Trump’s social media posts blasting Powell and unsuccessfully pressuring him to lower interest rates before suggesting that someone else should replace him to head up the Fed.

“Being perceived as the president’s adversary has become risky in recent years,” Boasberg said in the ruling.

Alex Wong / Getty Images

Susie Wiles diagnosed with breast cancer, will stay on as White House chief of staff

    Updated on: March 16, 2026 / 1:19 PM EDT / CBS News

White House chief of staff Susie Wiles has been diagnosed with an early stage of breast cancer, she confirmed Monday.

“This past week, I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Wiles, 68, said in a statement. “Nearly one in eight women in the United States will face this diagnosis. Every day, these women continue to raise their families, go to work, and serve their communities with strength and determination. I now join their ranks.”

President Trump and Wiles said she will be staying on in her position during treatment. It’s unclear what treatment she will be receiving.

“She has a fantastic medical team, and her prognosis is excellent!” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social. “During the treatment period, she will be spending virtually full time at the White House, which makes me, as President, very happy! Her Strength and her Commitment to continue doing the job she loves, and does so well, while undergoing treatment, tells you everything you need to know about her.”

At a Kennedy Center event on Monday with Wiles, Mr. Trump called her “an amazing person, an amazing fighter.”

“She announced a minor difficulty, which will be in good shape,” Mr. Trump added. “She’ll be around for a long time. The prognosis there is excellent, beyond excellent.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on social media on Monday that Wiles “epitomizes what it means to be a strong leader. She is also one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.”

“I know I speak for the President and the entire White House when I say that we are all praying for Susie and rallying behind her as she prepares to fight this battle against breast cancer,” Leavitt wrote.

According to the National Cancer Center, over 300,000 women in the U.S. were diagnosed in 2025 with breast cancer, accounting for over 15% of all cancer diagnoses that year. The five-year survival rate is over 91%, the center reported.

Wiles is the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff. She was co-chair of Mr. Trump’s 2024 campaign, and Mr. Trump has credited her with helping him win both the 2024 and 2016 elections.

After Mr. Trump won his first term in 2016, Wiles, who was the chief strategist in Florida for his campaign, was dispatched to help Ron DeSantis with his 2018 bid to become Florida governor. After DeSantis’ win, she had a falling out with him and returned to run Mr. Trump’s Florida campaign in 2020. After the 2020 campaign loss, she ran the Save America PAC before joining the 2024 campaign as co-campaign manager.

Wiles, a native of New Jersey, is the daughter of the renowned late NFL kicker and sportscaster Pat Summerall. Soon after she graduated from college at the University of Maryland, she worked for Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign, and later went on to work in Florida politics. In 2010, she helped Sen. Rick Scott win his election against Democrat Bill McCollum, and she has also been a political consultant in Florida.

Trump insisted he didn’t need allies’ help in Iran. Now he’s demanding they step in

President Donald Trump has consistently asserted that the war with Iran is going well. But his decision to ask for help from allies and other countries to resolve the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz is the latest evidence that calls that into question.

In fact, Trump repeatedly said he didn’t need help from other countries — including very recently — and he’s spent years alienating allies.

But the US president began ramping up his calls for help on Sunday.

“It’d be nice to have other countries police it with us,” Trump said aboard Air Force One, noting much of the oil that China imports comes through the strait.

Trump also insisted that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization should get involved.

“We’re always there for NATO. We’re helping them with Ukraine,” Trump said, adding: “Doesn’t affect us, but we’ve helped them. It’d be interesting to see what country wouldn’t help us with a very small endeavor, which is just keeping the strait open.”

On Monday, at a meeting in the White House, Trump strongly criticized longtime allies that he said were not enthusiastic enough about helping.

“Some are countries that we’ve helped for many, many years. We’ve protected them from horrible outside sources, and they weren’t that enthusiastic,” Trump said. “And the level of enthusiasm matters to me.”

Trump claimed he has gotten “some positive response” after reaching out to countries, but he has often exaggerated and misstated such things. He declined to name any specific allies who have committed to sending aid and no countries have indicated publicly that they plan to intervene.

There are a couple of key points here.

One is that this is very difficult to square with Trump’s recent commentary about getting help from other countries, which has often been dismissive.

On March 3, after Spain declined to allow the United States to use its air bases, Trump insisted he didn’t need the country’s help.

“And so, I told him we don’t want — Spain has absolutely nothing that we need,” Trump said. “Other than great people. They have great people, but they don’t have great leadership.”

On March 7, as the United Kingdom considered dispatching an aircraft carrier to the region, Trump insisted such help was wholly unnecessary because victory had already been achieved.

“That’s OK, Prime Minister (Keir) Starmer, we don’t need them any longer,” Trump posted on social media. “But we will remember. We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!”

On March 9, Trump said it was “my honor to” work to secure the Strait of Hormuz, insisting the oil supply that crosses that strategic waterway was mostly helpful to other countries like China.

On Friday, Trump responded to Ukraine’s offer to help counter Iranian drones by telling Fox News radio host Brian Kilmeade that “we don’t need the help in drone defense.” And Trump told NBC News something similar Saturday, insisting “we don’t need help.”

These are all the comments of a man who didn’t seem to foresee needing help. Especially given his “we don’t need people” comments about the UK — a position he’s certainly flipped on now. He said Monday he was “not happy” with Starmer for not immediately committing to help US forces in the strait.

“I said, ‘You don’t need to meet up with the team. You’re the prime minister. You can make your own — why do you have to meet with your team to find out whether or not you’re going to send some minesweepers to us or to send some boats?’” Trump told reporters.

Which brings us to the other key point: To the extent Trump thought he might need help from other countries, it sure would have seemed wise to start smoothing things over first.

Trump has spent much of his two terms alienating the kinds of allies that could seemingly come to the United States’ aid. And that’s arguably ramped up in his second term.

It was less than two months ago, after all, that Trump was still leaving open the possibility of a military invasion of a NATO ally in Greenland. Even given doubts that invasion would ever happen, Trump was clearly trying to coerce Denmark to hand over the territory.

He’s also talked about making Canada the 51st state in ways that country and many others regard as rather provocative, if not downright offensive.

He has targeted lots of allies with his tariffs, sometimes seeming to play rougher with them than he does with some adversaries.

He has regularly made incendiary remarks at international get-togethers and acted as if he were trying to bully US allies rather than get along with them. This led to some extraordinary comments from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and others recently, in which they suggested perhaps their best course forward was a decoupling from the United States.

And then there are some particularly pertinent — and rather ill-considered, in light of where we are — comments that Trump made in late January about NATO.

“We’ve never needed them. We have never really asked anything of them,” Trump said. “You know, they’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, or this or that. And they did — they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.”

Even in a vacuum, those comments were highly offensive to allies — especially since many of them suffered significant deaths in Afghanistan. Coalition soldiers did fight on the front lines, and more than 1,000 of them died.

But those comments loom particularly large now. Trump repeatedly said he didn’t need longtime US allies and then turned around less than two months later and demanded help in a war he started. He insulted the sacrifices of allies and then asked them to sacrifice again.

At the very least, it would suggest Trump didn’t imagine himself in this position.

Despite Trump’s past comments, those countries might still feel pressured to help in some way, given how a bottleneck in the Strait of Hormuz could cause long-term harm to the global economy.

Still, Trump’s about-face on this seems to reinforce that the US president has bitten off more than he thought he might have to chew.
