How the military is using AI in war

    March 18, 2026 / 11:05 AM EDT / CBS News

With Anthropic’s AI systems being ushered out of the Pentagon, a battle is brewing among other major artificial intelligence firms looking to capitalize on this potentially lucrative opening and shape the way AI is integrated into America’s military defense.

Earlier this month, the Pentagon called for Anthropic’s AI technology to be removed from military operations within six months — the result of an escalating feud between the company’s chief executive and the Trump administration. An internal Pentagon memo hinted that Anthropic’s artificial intelligence was being used in key national areas of national security, including nuclear weapons, ballistic missile defense and cyber warfare.

Sources familiar with the U.S. military’s use of artificial intelligence tell CBS News that AI programs — including one created by Anthropic, which the Trump administration has deemed a supply chain risk — are likely being deployed as part of the U.S. operation against Iran.

While the Pentagon has not said exactly how AI tools are being deployed, CBS News spoke with several experts with knowledge of military operations who described the likely scenarios.

“The military is now processing roughly a thousand potential targets a day and striking the majority of them, with turnaround time for the next strike potentially under four hours,” said retired Navy Admiral Mark Montgomery, senior director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracy’s Center on Cyber and Technology Innovation. “A human is still in the loop, but AI is doing the work that used to take days of analysis — and doing it at a scale no previous campaign has matched.”

How AI is used by the military

The Pentagon uses AI in the ways many consumers do — to summarize and distill lots of information at once. According to former Pentagon officials, by analyzing documents, video, and images coming in from the battlefield, AI can help the military war-game out scenarios to minimize casualties and determine which weapons can be most effective.

“We’re living through a military revolution driven by the digital revolution,” said CBS News national security analyst Aaron McLean. “Today’s revolution is driven by the explosion of data: cameras everywhere, smartphones, connected cars. The battlefield is now flooded with information in ways that were unimaginable a generation ago.”

With so much data available, AI has become instrumental in contextualizing it for military personnel at a speed far beyond traditional human analysis.

“There’s now far more data than any room of analysts could process on timelines that matter. AI algorithms sift through it to build targeting packages, assign strike assets and assess damage — nearly instantly,” McLean said.

“The Israel missile defense example makes this visceral: when hundreds of drones and missiles are inbound over a few hours, no human team can decide in real time which ones to intercept, with what, and when. That’s what AI is doing.”

So far, Anthropic’s large language model, Claude, is the only large-scale AI system that’s been operational on the Defense Department’s classified systems.

AI is also used for other administrative functions like research, policy development and procurement, according to Josh Gruenbaum, the commissioner of the Federal Acquisition Service, a government agency which helps decide which goods and services to use.

“Our goal has been, and remains, to help agencies become comfortable using this technology and turbocharging output and efficiencies for the American taxpayer, while maintaining an evenhanded approach that welcomes American innovators who strengthen agency missions and enable the lawful deployment of these tools by government without inappropriate impediment,” Gruenbaum told CBS News.

How AI works with physical weapons

AI doesn’t exist in a vacuum on the battlefield — there is still plenty of human oversight and physical tech, including everything from aircraft carriers to drones, from legacy defense contractors like Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Lockheed Martin. The large language models that power AI are not flying the planes or firing the missiles, but they are being used to do a lot of analysis before those things are done.

According to Montgomery, this advancement has compressed operation time from days to hours.

“It’s an important enabler in the military’s ability to rapidly plan and execute war fights,” Montgomery told CBS News, emphasizing that there are still humans in the process, but that AI is used to help plan potential strikes.

A source directly familiar with the military capabilities of Anthropic’s Claude AI told CBS News the main task Claude is doing is sifting through large amounts of intelligence reports, like synthesizing patterns, summarizing findings and surfacing relevant information faster than a human analyst could.

The targeting process remains human-driven, the source said. While Anthropic’s U.S. Government Usage Policy does allow the Defense Department to use Clause for analyzing foreign intelligence, the terms of use require humans to make any decisions on military targets.

CBS News has not been able to independently verify whether Claude systems were used in a Feb. 28 strike that hit a girls’ school in Iran for which the U.S. was likely responsible.

AI is a significant boost to operations, but war could still be fought without it. More traditional legacy contractors still make the vast majority of weapons, according to Montgomery.

“This war is being fought by weapons, 98% by weapons provided by the traditional primes, and they’re doing very well,” Montgomery said. He added that you could fight a war without AI, but it would be “less desirable.” “It definitely is playing a role that will probably only grow campaign after campaign after campaign,” he said.

Big tech’s role in the military — and what’s changing

In July, the Pentagon signed a $200 million contract with the artificial intelligence company Anthropic to integrate Claude into Pentagon systems. That contract has since been canceled following a dispute between the Pentagon and Anthropic’s leaders about who should have final say in setting restrictions on how Claude is used by the military.

Now, the company is suing the federal government, alleging retaliation.”The Constitution does not allow the government to wield its enormous power to punish a company for its protected speech. No federal statute authorizes the actions taken here,” Anthropic said in the lawsuit.

Microsoft and workers from OpenAI and Google have filed amicus briefs in support of Anthropic’s lawsuit.

The Pentagon has a six-month off-ramp period to remove Anthropic’s products from its system, and is still using them in Iran, despite the supply chain risk designation.

Meantime, other companies are getting in on the action. Google announced in a blog post on Tuesday that it is rolling out AI agents for non-classified military uses. On the heels of Anthropic’s fallout with the Defense Department in late February, Sam Altman, CEO of Anthropic rival OpenAI, posted on X about using the ChatGPT maker’s artificial intelligence models in the Pentagon’s classified network. The company then posted about language in their deal with the Pentagon honoring what they refer to as their three red lines on using AI: autonomous lethal weapons, mass surveillance of Americans, and high-stakes automated decisions.

White House announces state-federal anti-fraud task force headed by Vice President JD Vance

    By Charles Creitz
    Fox News

    Published March 18, 2026 8:37am EDT | Updated March 18, 2026 8:42am EDT

FIRST ON FOX: A top senator involved in slashing red tape will tout a plan requiring line-item proof of every federal tax dollar from entities that receive federal funding.

Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, said her move would guard against rampant fraud such as the slew of allegedly fake Minneapolis daycares, adding the measure could have helped prevent wasted taxpayer funds.

Ernst’s bill coincides with the White House announcing a state-federal anti-fraud task force led by Vice President JD Vance, which White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News is a “whole of government effort to fight fraud at the state and federal level” and fulfills another campaign promise.

The COST (Cost Openness and Spending Transparency) Act will ensure every government agency lists every project it uses taxpayer money for, as Ernst prepares to lead a Senate Small Business Committee hearing featuring watchdogs like White Coat Waste and Open The Books.

“As I always say, if you can’t find waste in Washington, there can only be one reason – you didn’t look,” Ernst told Fox News Digital.

“But after years of fighting to hold Washington accountable, I’ve also learned that you can’t stop what you can’t see. That’s why this Sunshine Week, I’m leading the COST ACT to post the price on every single project the American public is footing the bill for,” she said.

Under the COST Act, allegedly fraudulent businesses like Minneapolis daycares would be required to list all of their federal funding.

Such transparency would have exposed Minnesota fraudsters earlier, helping authorities catch scofflaws and alleged tax-dollar thieves.

The COST Act’s official purpose is “to put a public price tag on all projects supported with taxpayer dollars,” according to a copy obtained by Fox News Digital.

Any agency, individual or entity — including those within state and local governments and federal research grant recipients — must clearly report through a press release or other approved documentation any program or project carried out using federal funds, whether fully or in part.

The recipient of taxpayer funds must report the percentage of total costs covered by federal funds, the dollar amount and the portion financed privately.

It then instructs the Office of Management and Budget — currently led by Director Russell Vought — to review a random sample of such recipients to enforce compliance and publicly report its findings.

A source familiar with the legislation added that the work of citizen journalists in Minneapolis who helped expose the “Quality Learning Center” and other allegedly fraudulent daycares and medical services companies inspired a new requirement to give civilians an outlet for their concerns.

Vought’s office would have one year to set up such a mechanism for anonymous reports of noncompliance, according to the bill.

“Calling taxpayers’ attention to how and where their hard-earned money is being spent exposes fraudulent spending, like what we saw at the Quality ‘Learing’ Center [in Minnesota], so it can no longer fester in the shadows,” Ernst said on that account.

Rand Paul calls Markwayne Mullin a “man with anger issues” in confirmation hearing

    March 18, 2026 / 11:29 AM EDT / CBS News

Senate Homeland Security Chairman Rand Paul fiercely criticized Senator Markwayne Mullin during his confirmation hearing on Wednesday, calling him a “man with anger issues” after Mullin previously called Paul a “freaking snake” and that Mullin said he understood why a neighbor attacked Paul in 2017.

Mullin is appearing before the Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs after President Trump nominated him to replace Kristi Noem as the Secretary of Homeland Security. Mr. Trump said earlier in March that Noem would leave the position at the end of the month.

During his opening remarks, Paul addressed political violence, recounting being attacked in his yard. He described his injuries, including multiple broken ribs and a damaged lung, and a long, painful recovery that felt like “1,000 knives.”

“I just wonder if someone who applauds violence against their political opponents is the right person to lead an agency that has struggled to accept limits to the proper use of force,” Paul said.

He then accused Mullin of responding to a policy disagreement by attacking him personally and appearing to condone that violence.

“You told the media that I was a ‘freaking snake’ and that you completely understood why I had been assaulted,” Paul said. “I was shocked that you would justify and celebrate this violent assault that caused me so much pain and my family so much pain. … You went on to brag that you’d already told me to my face that you completely understood and approved of the assault.”

Chairman Sen. Rand Paul delivers an opening statement during a confirmation hearing for U.S. Sen. Markwayne Mullin on March 18, 2026 in Washington, D.C. Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images

Paul said that Mullin had never made such a comment to his face, then challenged Mullin to clarify his past remarks.

“You’ve got a chance today. You can either continue to lie or you can correct the record. You never had the courage to look me in the eye and tell me that the assault was justified. So today you’ll have your chance,” he said. “Tell it to my face, if that’s what you believe. Tell it to me today. Tell the world why you believe I deserved to be assaulted from behind, have six ribs broken and a damaged lung.”

He then said that Mullin should “explain to the American public why they should trust a man with anger issues to set the proper example for ICE and Border Patrol agents” and referenced an 2023 incident where Mullin challenged Teamsters President Sean O’Brien to a physical fight in a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee hearing. At the time, Mullin taunted O’Brien to “stand (his) butt up” before committee chairman Sen. Bernie Sanders intervened. O’Brien and Mullin later became good friends, and O’Brien was present at the hearing.

“Explain how a man who has no regrets about brawling in a Senate committee can set a proper example for over 250,000 men and women who work at the Department of Homeland Security,” Paul said.

In Mullin’s opening remarks, he addressed Paul’s comments directly, but he did not apologize.

“I said I could understand, because of the behavior you were having, that I can understand why your neighbor did what he did,” Mullin said. “As far as my terms and snake in the grass, sir, I work around this room to try to fix problems. I worked with many people in this room. Seems like you fight Republicans more than you work with us. I did address those remarks. I did explain your gimmicks by the amendment you put forth.”

Mullin also accused Paul of spending “millions of dollars in my campaigns against me, because we just don’t get along,” but then said he would set aside “partisan bickering” to “earn the job” of Homeland Security Secretary.

During his first round of questioning, Paul doubled down, asking that the record show “a lack of contrition” from Mullin. He then said that while it was one thing to set aside “political differences,” he could not accept Mullin’s “unrepentant” tone.

“When you say that you agree with a felon, a Trump hating felon who attacked me somehow, you think I’m just going to set that aside? ‘Oh, it’s no big deal?’” Paul said. “You know, I lay in pain for two months, had six ribs broken, three of them separated, grinding upon bone on bone, for months, had part of my lung removed. And you think that’s great, and to be extolled. I mean, the sheer lack of any kind of self awareness that you’re going to be leading thousands of men and women.”

Paul then played a video compilation of aggressive remarks by Mullin, including his 2023 exchange with O’Brien.

Further, a source familiar with the proceedings confirmed to CBS News that Paul blocked Sen. Katie Britt, an Alabama Republican, from introducing Mullin at the confirmation hearing

Britt leads the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security and has been involved in negotiations over funding the department.

Britt confirmed that she was kept from introducing Mullin.

“I’m really disappointed,” she told reporters. “I asked obviously for the opportunity to speak about our colleague and my dear friend. I would’ve hoped that would’ve been something the chairman would have allowed to happen. We did speak. He told me that was not something he was going to let me do.”

Britt said she will instead submit her remarks for the record.

Even if Paul votes against Mullin, Democratic committee member John Fetterman has already said he would support the nomination, so he likely will advance to the full Senate for a vote. A simple majority is needed to confirm him.

US drivers face long-term pain at pump, analysts say; Trump bets they are wrong

    • Summary
    • US EIA lifts forecast for average 2026 crude price by 37%
    • EIA’s average gasoline price estimate for 2026 is up 15%
    • US pump price of $3.79/gallon is up from $2.92 a month ago

March 18 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are betting the oil-price shock sparked by the Iran crisis will be too short-lived to hurt them politically in November, but traders and industry analysts see signs that U.S. pump prices will stay painfully high long after any diplomatic breakthrough.

Oil prices have surged as the conflict disrupted global supply. U.S. crude topped $100 a barrel for the first time since the 2022 Russia-Ukraine shock. U.S. diesel climbed above $5 a gallon, its highest since late 2022. The disruptions stem in large part from Iran’s effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the choke point through which roughly one-fifth of global oil normally flows.

Trump has repeatedly said the higher energy costs are a small price to pay for neutralizing Iran. On Tuesday, he again predicted energy prices would “drop like a rock” after the conflict ends.

But oil futures, government forecasts and seasonal summer demand point to elevated crude and gasoline prices persisting even if tensions ease, analysts warned, noting that energy costs tend to fall slower than they rise.

“It’s going to take time for those prices to come back down,” said Matt Smith, an analyst at energy consultant group Kpler.

If fuel costs stay high through the summer, voters could blame Trump’s Republican Party for straining household budgets and punish its candidates in November’s midterm elections. Polls show voters are worried about the cost of living. Affordability is the key issue for Democrats, who are within reach of getting a majority in the House of Representatives and narrowing Republicans’ margin of control in the Senate.

Trump has long used social media and the White House megaphone to shape the political narrative, but gasoline prices are hard to spin, said Chris Borick, a pollster and political science professor at Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania.

“It’s the most in-your-face reminder of affordability concerns, and it’s almost impossible to convince voters of some kind of contextual case that outweighs their emotional reaction,” Borick said.

White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said Trump has been “right about everything,” and oil prices are no different.

“Once the military objectives of Operation Epic Fury are completed and the Iranian terrorist regime is neutralized, oil and gas prices will drop rapidly—potentially even lower this before the strikes began,” Rogers said.

SIGNS POINT TO HIGHER FOR LONGER

The U.S. Energy Information Administration this month sharply raised its outlook for crude and fuel prices. It now projects Brent crude will average about $79 a barrel in 2026, up 37% from a prior forecast of $58, while U.S. retail gasoline is expected to average $3.34 a gallon, up nearly 15% from its prior estimate.

For 2027, the revised government forecasts put global crude prices about 22% higher and U.S. gasoline prices roughly 8.4% higher than previous projections, underscoring expectations that tighter supplies and geopolitical risks could keep energy costs elevated for years.

Oil futures markets tell a similar story, with contracts for delivery well into next year trading above levels seen earlier this year.

U.S. crude futures have averaged $68.10 a barrel so far this year but are expected to average $85.25 for the remainder of 2026 and $71.35 in 2027, according to LSEG. That compares with an average of about $64.70 a barrel in 2025.

Florence Schmit, an energy strategist at Rabobank, said any normalization would be gradual.

“Even if they signed a peace deal tomorrow, it would take months before we see a full resumption of traffic and energy flows,” she said, adding prices could ease to the mid-to-high $70s by year‑end.

U.S. drivers are feeling the impact. The national average for regular fuel climbed on Tuesday to $3.79 per gallon from $3.54 a week ago and $2.92 a month ago, according to industry data. Prices are up sharply from $3.08 a year ago, reflecting broader inflationary pressures in energy markets and tighter crude supplies.

Since the conflict began on February 28, Trump has reviewed a range of options to ease price pressure, with Chief of Staff Susie Wiles taking a lead role in the effort, Reuters has reported.

The administration has already taken several steps to blunt the supply shock and stabilize global markets, including easing certain sanctions on Russian energy exports to bring additional crude to the market and joining allied nations in a historic, coordinated release of strategic petroleum reserves.

The U.S. release of roughly 200 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve is expected to occur over several months, limiting its immediate impact on prices.
