White House complained about ‘known leaker’ but Gabbard never fired him, official says | Fox News

    Fox News – Published March 19, 2026 4:42pm EDT

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was not aware that former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent was under FBI investigation for allegedly leaking classified information prior to his resignation, a senior intelligence official told Fox News Digital Thursday.

Kent stepped down Tuesday after publicly breaking with President Donald Trump over the war in Iran, writing in his resignation letter that Tehran posed “no imminent threat” to the United States.

Two sources briefed on the matter told Fox News that the FBI investigation into Kent had been underway for weeks before his departure.

FBI leak investigations are often tightly held in the early stages to avoid tipping off the subject. But the fact that the probe into Kent had been underway for weeks before his resignation — and that the director of national intelligence was not aware of it — raises questions about why the nation’s top intelligence official was not informed.

The lack of awareness also raises questions about how decisions regarding Kent’s access to sensitive information were managed in the weeks leading up to his resignation, as administration officials have said he had been cut out of planning meetings related to the current Iran mission, known as Operation Epic Fury, as well as the president’s daily briefings.

One senior administration official described Kent as a “known leaker” and said Gabbard had been asked to fire Kent and had not done so.

Another official said the White House had complained to Gabbard about Kent, but had not asked her to fire him.

An official at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) said the president never asked Gabbard to fire Kent, or she would have done so.

As director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Kent typically would oversee the integration and analysis of intelligence related to terrorist threats, a role that typically involves access to some of the government’s most sensitive information.

During a series of recent congressional hearings, Gabbard has been pressed on Kent’s claims.

In a recent exchange with Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., Gabbard was asked whether she agreed with Kent’s resignation statement after Stefanik read portions of it aloud. “He said a lot of things in that letter,” Gabbard responded, adding that the president “makes his own decisions based on the information that’s available to him.”

When pressed on whether Kent’s comments concerned her, she gave a one-word answer: “Yes.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Gabbard, Kent and the FBI for comment.

Fox News’ David Spunt contributed to this report.

(Fred Backus)

In voting process, photo ID gets wide support, Republicans more likely to believe there’s fraud, CBS News poll finds

    March 19, 2026 / 6:32 PM EDT / CBS News

    By

    Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus

Requiring photo ID to vote and proving citizenship to register both find wide and often bipartisan support.

But that doesn’t mean everyone sees problems with the current voting system.

It is often Republicans driving the percentages of those who think there is widespread fraud — and often think it’s specifically in cities and Democratic areas — but even then, it’s not an overwhelming majority of them.

Elsewhere, including among many Democrats, there’s concern that proof of citizenship requirements will prevent eligible citizens from voting.

And there’s still a local-first perspective on running elections: Most Americans would have their own states, rather than the federal government, have the final say in how elections are run.

Most Americans also say voting by mail is ok. And people who vote that way are especially inclined to say so.

In all, few Americans feel they know a lot of specifics about what’s in the SAVE Act.

Photo ID and proof of citizenship

The idea of showing photo ID to vote gets support across party lines.

Proving citizenship to register also gets majority backing, if relatively less than a photo ID to vote.

Specifically, in the minds of many, identification requirements to vote would need to be more than things like student IDs or just a signature.

What happens if proof is required?

The perceived implications of needing to prove citizenship are sharply partisan, though: Democrats are more inclined to say it’ll prevent US citizens from being able to vote, while more Republicans say that it will block non-citizens from doing so.

The big picture: How Americans feel about the voting process

Partisanship steers where people think the problems are, if any.

The notion that there is widespread fraud in the system is far more prevalent among the Republican rank and file, more so than others.

But that said, it’s not an overwhelming majority, at just over half of Republicans.

And this is not a new development: in the years since the 2020 election, most Republicans routinely felt former President Joe Biden had not been legitimately elected.

More specifically, Republicans think that when there is fraud, it tends to come from urban areas, more so than suburban or rural places and from Democratic states, not Republican ones.

Mail voting — which, in many states, is a substantial or even entirely the way they vote — draws mixed views. Most Republicans feel it should only be available to those unable to physically vote.

Republicans also tend to feel mail balloting brings more fraud.

But views on mail voting also change depending on the manner in which people cast their own ballots.

Most of those who report voting by mail in 2024 say it should be available to all voters, and this includes about half of the mail-in voters who report having voted for President Trump.

Republicans are far more likely to believe it happens a lot that non-citizens illegally vote in federal elections. But even then, it’s not all Republicans who think so.

More broadly, most Republicans say a major problem is people casting votes who are ineligible to do so.

Democrats see something of the opposite issue — that eligible people being prevented from voting is a major problem.

But views on all this don’t necessarily connect to the SAVE Act. Many who favor ID and proof of citizenship requirements aren’t sure about the SAVE Act, and say they don’t know the specifics of what’s in it.

    Are elections a federal matter?

Most feel it is their state — not the federal government — that ought to have a final say in how elections are administered.

In terms of oversight, it may have more to do with who is in power than with abstract views of governance. Today, most Republicans want more federal oversight over their states’ elections, while most Democrats do not. Back in 2021, during the Biden administration, it was the reverse: Democrats wanted more federal oversight, while Republicans did not.

In all, across party lines, Americans already tend to voice at least some confidence (if not a lot) in their local and state elections administration.

They tend to think their own votes will be counted correctly.

Even as they see widespread fraud – primarily in cities and Democratic places – most Republicans are confident that their OWN vote will be counted and recorded correctly.

Justice Department seizes several websites it says spread terrorist propaganda

The Justice Department on Thursday seized several websites it says were used by Iran as part of “psychological operations” targeting perceived advisories and spreading terrorist propaganda.

Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security was using the four websites, in part, to post “sensitive data stolen during such hacks, and calling for the killing of journalists, regime dissidents, and Israeli persons,” the DOJ said in an announcement Friday.

Attorney General Pam Bondi warned that “terrorist propaganda online can incite real-world violence” in announcing the seizures while FBI Director Kash Patel said the “FBI will hunt down every actor behind these cowardly death threats and cyberattacks and will bring the full force of American law enforcement down on them.”

The website seizures come a week after men hundreds of miles away from one another attacked US institutions in American cities. Both attacks — one at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia and the other at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan — are being investigated as acts of terrorism.

The exact motives for each attack are still being investigated but the man who officials say drove a truck into the Michigan synagogue, before dying in a shootout with security, had previously been flagged in US government databases for connections with suspected members of the militant group Hezbollah, although he was not believed to be a member himself.

The Justice Department removed websites it says has been used to share propaganda.

    justicehomeland.org/Screenshot obtained by CNN

Separately, the man officials say killed one person and injured two others at Old Dominion University on Thursday was a veteran and convicted ISIS supporter. That man was killed by a group of students in the ROTC classroom where he opened fire.

Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei was killed in US-Israeli strikes late last month. The strikes have continued each day since.

According to the Justice Department, the websites it seized posted photos, names and sensitive information on 190 Israeli government associates along with threats and warnings. The Justice Department says the websites were involved in other threats and hacking operations, as well as calls for assassinations against Iranian targets.

“Threat actors” associated with one website, the Justice Department statement said, “directed online threats toward individuals who publicly criticized the Iranian government.”

The goal of these campaigns, the Justice Department said, is to “discourage independent reporting” while “creating fear among members of the Iranian diaspora critical of the regime.”

WASHINGTON, March 19 (Reuters) – A 19-year-old man died at a federal detention center on Monday, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the youngest known person to ‌die in federal immigration custody during the second Trump administration.

ICE identified the man as Royer Perez Jimenez, of Mexico, who was being held at the Glades County Detention Center in Moore Haven, Florida.

Perez Jimenez’s death is a presumed suicide, ICE said, adding that the official cause of death is under investigation after he was found unresponsive in the early hours of the morning. The detention center’s staff unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate him for nearly 10 minutes after he was found, according to ICE.

The agency said Perez Jimenez was in custody after he was arrested and charged with felony fraud for impersonating and resisting ‌an officer.

He had initially entered the U.S. in 2022, was returned home after an encounter with U.S. Border Patrol, and later reentered the U.S. illegally on an unknown date, ICE said.

At least 12 immigrants, including Perez Jimenez, have died in federal immigration custody so far this year. Thirty-one deaths – a two-decade high – were recorded last year, according to ICE.

“ICE is committed to ensuring that all those in custody reside in safe, secure and humane environments. Comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment individuals arrive and throughout the entirety of their stay,” the agency said in a statement on Wednesday.
