Stand-up comedian gets nearly 6 years in Russian prison over joke about war veteran

    February 4, 2026 / 2:37 PM EST / CBS/AFP

A Russian stand-up comedian was sent to a penal colony for almost six years Wednesday for a joke about a war veteran who lost his legs, the latest conviction in a sweeping crackdown on those who question the war in Ukraine.

Moscow-based Artemy Ostanin told a story on stage last year about bumping into a disabled ex-soldier on the metro, who he called a “legless skater.”

Pro-Kremlin figures and media outlets spread a clip of the joke online, calling for the comic to be punished for insulting Russian soldiers wounded in the war in Ukraine.

A Moscow court also found Ostanin guilty of inciting hatred and insulting religious feelings over a separate joke about religion.

“The final sentence for Ostanin is imprisonment for five years and nine months in a general regime penal colony,” judge Olesya Mendeleyeva was quoted as saying by Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

Ostanin, 29, denied that the joke alluded to veterans of the “special military operation” — Moscow’s term for the war in Ukraine.

“I hope no one ever finds themselves in the same situation of brutal legal abuse that I did,” he said in his final statement in court, according to Russia’s independent SOTA media outlet.

The judge who handed down Ostanin’s sentence was sanctioned by the United States Treasury in December 2024 for her role in what the department called “the arbitrary detention” of Moscow city councilor Alexei Gorinov for voicing his opposition to the war against Ukraine.

After Ostanin’s arrest last year, he was added to Moscow’s list of terrorists and extremists, labels routinely used by Russia to stifle dissent and target opponents.

Russia has massively ramped up a campaign of silencing critics since launching its offensive on Ukraine in 2022.

Last November, a Russian court sentenced Diana Loginova, an 18-year-old street musician who performed anti-war songs, to jail for a third time.

In 2024, a doctor accused of criticizing the war in Ukraine in front of a patient was convicted of spreading false information about the Russian military and sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison.

In November 2023, Russia placed Ukrainian singer Susana Jamaladinova on its wanted list for similar alleged crimes. That same month, a Russian court sentenced artist and musician Sasha Skochilenko to seven years in prison for swapping supermarket price tags with antiwar messages.

In April 2023, a Russian court sentenced prominent opposition figure and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in a high-security prison on charges of treason for criticizing Russia’s war in Ukraine.

World enters uncharted era as US-Russia nuclear treaty expires, opening door to fastest arms race in decades

New START expiration eliminates last legal framework governing US and Russian nuclear arsenals

[Video]Trump rebukes Putin for nuclear missile test, says he should ‘get the war ended’

President Donald Trump slammed Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, saying the leader should be pursuing peace in Ukraine rather than testing missiles.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

A historic nuclear arms reduction treaty is set to expire Thursday, which will thrust the world into a nuclear situation it has not faced in more than five decades, one in which there are no longer any binding limits on the size of Russia’s or America’s nuclear arsenals and no inspection regime to verify what Moscow does next.

Matt Korda, associate director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, said the expiration of the New START treaty forces both countries to rethink assumptions that have guided nuclear planning for more than a decade.

“Up until now, both countries have planned their respective nuclear modernization programs based on the assumption that the other country is not going to exceed those central limits,” Korda said. “Without those central limits … both countries are going to be reassessing their programs to accommodate a more uncertain nuclear future.”

TRUMP WARNS RUSSIA: US HAS WORLD’S GREATEST NUCLEAR SUBMARINE ‘RIGHT OFF THEIR SHORES’

Russia had already suspended its participation in New START in 2023, freezing inspections and data exchanges, but the treaty’s expiration eliminates the last legal framework governing the size of the two countries’ nuclear arsenals.

With no follow-up agreement in place, the administration has insisted it cannot agree to arms control without the cooperation of China.

“The president has been clear in the past that in order to have true arms control in the 21st century, it’s impossible to do something that doesn’t include China because of their vast and rapidly growing stockpile,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday.

A White House official told Fox News President Donald Trump will decide the path forward on arms control “on his own timeline.” “President Trump has spoken repeatedly of addressing the threat nuclear weapons pose to the world and indicated that he would like to keep limits on nuclear weapons and involve China in arms control talks.”

Experts are skeptical that China would ever agree to limit its nuclear stockpile until it’s reached parity with the U.S., and Russia has said it would not pressure China to come to the table.

China aims to have 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030, but even that figure pales in comparison to the aging giants of the Cold War. As of early 2026, the global nuclear hierarchy remains top-heavy, with the U.S. and Russia holding roughly 86% of the world’s total inventory. Both the U.S. and Russia hold around 4,000 total warheads, with close to 1,700 deployed by each. Global nuclear stockpiles declined to about 12,000 in 2025, down from more than 70,000 in 1986.

In February 2023, Russia announced it was suspending its participation in the New START treaty, halting inspections and data-sharing under the pact while saying it would continue to respect the numerical limits. But, more recently, it floated the idea of extending the treaty by another year.

TRUMP STUNS WITH CALL TO RESUME NUCLEAR TESTS — WHY NOW, AND WHAT IT COULD MEAN

Korda said that proposal reflected shared constraints rather than a sudden change in Russian intentions.

“It’s not in Russia’s interest to dramatically accelerate an arms race while its current modernization programs are going so poorly and while its industrial capacity is tied up in Ukraine,” he said.

Korda said that without inspections and data exchanges, countries are forced to rely on their own intelligence, increasing uncertainty and encouraging worst-case planning.

“Without those onsite inspections, without data exchanges, without anything like that, all countries are really left with national technical means of being able to monitor each other’s nuclear forces,” Korda said.

With New START’s limits gone, experts said the immediate concern is not the construction of new nuclear weapons but how quickly existing warheads could be deployed. Ankit Panda, a Stanton senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said Russia could move faster than the United States in the near term by “uploading” additional warheads onto missiles already in service.

“Uploading would be a process of adding additional warheads to our ICBMs and submarine-launched missiles,” Panda said. “The Russians could be much faster than the United States.”

PUTIN PRAISES TRUMP’S ‘SINCERE’ PEACE EFFORTS, SIGNALS POSSIBLE US-RUSSIA NUCLEAR DEAL

Korda said a large-scale upload would not happen overnight but could still alter force levels within a relatively short window.

“We’re looking at maybe a timeline of about two years and pretty significant sums of money for each country to execute a complete upload across the entire force,” he said, adding that, in a worst-case scenario, it could “roughly result in doubling the sizes of their deployed nuclear arsenals.”

That advantage, however, is constrained by longer-term industrial realities. Panda noted that the U.S. nuclear weapons complex lacks the production capacity it once had, limiting how quickly Washington could sustain a larger arsenal over time.

“The United States is currently unable to produce what is going to be a target for 30 plutonium pits,” a fraction of Cold War output, he said.

Nicole Grajewski, a fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said Russia’s ability to produce nuclear weapons may be faster than the U.S. in some, but not all, parts of the development chain.

“Russia is very good at warhead production,” she told Fox News Digital. “What Russia is really fundamentally constrained on is the delivery vehicle side of it.”

Grajewski added that this is particularly true as the war in Ukraine continues. Russia’s production of missiles and other delivery systems relies on facilities that also support conventional weapons used in the war, limiting how quickly Moscow could expand the intercontinental missiles, submarine-launched weapons and bombers that made up the core of New START.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP

As a result, Grajewski said she is less concerned about a rapid buildup of those treaty-covered forces than about Moscow’s continued investment in nuclear systems that fall outside traditional arms control frameworks.

“What is more concerning is Russia’s advances in asymmetric domains,” she said, pointing to systems such as the Poseidon nuclear-powered torpedo and nuclear-powered cruise missiles, which are not covered by existing treaties.

President Donald Trump has previously said he wants to pursue arms control with both Russia and China before suggesting the U.S. should resume nuclear testing.

“If there’s ever a time when we need nuclear weapons like the kind of weapons that we’re building and that Russia has — and that China has, to a lesser extent, but will have — that’s going to be a very sad day,” Trump said in February 2025. “That’s going to be probably oblivion.”

But, in October, he declared, “Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately.”

Analysis: Mike Johnson promotes one of Trump’s most laughable election lies

3 hr ago PUBLISHED Feb 4, 2026, 2:36 PM ET / CNN Politics

President Donald Trump has promoted dozens of different lies about American elections. Some of them are relatively sophisticated. Some are transparently silly.

House Speaker Mike Johnson is now promoting one of the very most laughable.

In an interview that aired Monday, Trump said Republicans should “take over the voting” in at least “15 places” because of supposed corruption he has shown no evidence of. Then Johnson told reporters Tuesday:

“In some of the states – like in California, for example. I mean, they hold the elections open for weeks after Election Day. That’s just one thing that bothers so many people. We had three House Republican candidates who were ahead on Election Day in the last election cycle, and every time a new tranche of ballots came in, they just magically whittled away until their leads were lost. And no series of ballots that were counted after Election Day were our candidates ahead on any of those counts. It just – it looks on its face to be fraudulent. Can I prove that? No, because it happened so far upstream.”

Even with Johnson’s un-Trumpian admission that he doesn’t have proof of fraud, this is a lot of nonsense.

A Democrat taking the lead in a vote count is not a sign of fraud

There is nothing magical and nothing fraudulent “on its face” about a Republican having an early lead in a California vote count and then losing that lead as more votes are counted – just as there is nothing magical or fraudulent on its face about a Democrat having an early lead in a vote count in another state and then losing that lead as more votes are counted.

All that happens in both cases is that … legitimate ballots are legitimately counted.

In the presidential swing state of Arizona, mail-in ballots must arrive at elections offices by the time the polls close on Election Day. Because mail-in votes tend to favor Democrats these days, in part because Trump has repeatedly discouraged his supporters from voting this way, Arizona’s Democratic candidates may have illusory big leads when mail-in votes that arrived early are quickly added to the vote totals on Election Night – but they may lose those leads or see them narrow as the votes that are cast in-person or dropped off on Election Day are fully counted over the coming days.

Mail-in ballots in their envelopes await processing at the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorders’ mail-in ballot processing center at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, California, October 28, 2020.

    Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images

Conversely, California allows mail-in ballots to arrive up to seven days after Election Day as long as they are postmarked on or before Election Day – and the Democratic-dominated state with the country’s largest population has a huge volume of mail-in ballots to count, around 13 million out of roughly 16.1 million votes in the 2024 election. California’s rules for processing mail-in ballots and for mail-in voters fixing issues with their signatures also contribute to a slower count than in other states. So: California’s Republican candidates may have illusory big leads in the early count from in-person votes, then lose those leads or see them narrow as mail-in ballots are fully counted.

None of this should be remotely complicated to anyone as heavily involved in US elections as the speaker of the House is. And media outlets have been explaining it to the public for years.

Californians have to vote on or before Election Day

Johnson didn’t explain exactly what he meant by “they hold the elections open for weeks after Election Day,” but he certainly left open the impression that Californians are allowed to vote after Election Day. They aren’t. California voters must vote in person or send in their mail-in ballot on Election Day or earlier.

It is true that California tends to take weeks to finish its vote count. That process could get a bit faster after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a 2025 bill to try to get counties to speed it up. Regardless, a slow count is a sign of a slow count, not a sign of fraud. And contrary to what appears to be a widespread perception, vote-counting continues for days after Election Day in states throughout the country – even when media outlets have already “called” the winner.

Those media calls are informal projections, not final results, and do not end the count even in landslide victories in which the general public quickly stops paying attention to candidates’ precise numbers. It would be unfathomable for Johnson not to know this.

Mel Levey is the registrar of voters in Merced County, California, which sits in the House district that had the closest race in the country in 2024, where a Republican candidate was initially leading in the count but the Democrat ended up winning by 187 votes. Levey said in a statement to CNN that observers and lawyers from both the Republican and Democratic campaigns “observed every single aspect of [the canvass]” in 2024 and that neither side requested a recount after the certification of the razor-thin result; “they knew the results were fair and accurate,” Levey said.

“I invite Speaker Johnson to visit my office to observe how elections are actually conducted in California. There is nothing ‘magical’ about it,” Levey said. “Just a lot of hard work and long days from non-partisan election officials who live and work in the communities for whom they help administer elections.”

House GOP moves to block DC from stopping Trump tax cuts for tipped, overtime workers

The legislation is led by Rep Brandon Gill, a Republican from Texas

    By Elizabeth Elkind
    Fox News

    Published February 4, 2026 4:14pm EST

The House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday aimed at stopping the Washington, D.C., local government from blocking parts of President Donald Trump’s new tax law.

D.C.’s progressive city council passed a local measure to stop certain parts of Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act from going into effect due to their expected effect of cutting city revenues.

Policies that would have been blocked include Trump’s elimination of taxes on tipped and overtime wages, as well as certain tax cuts aimed at businesses.

The legislation was led by Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, who told Fox News Digital he did not expect any Democrats to support his bill. It passed the House entirely along party lines in a 215 – 210 vote.

“Republicans want more money to be in the hands and in the pockets of working-class families, and Democrats want that money to be in the hands of government,” Gill said.

The D.C. government generally conforms with large swaths of the federal tax code, as a federal territory itself.

But according to local officials, including non-voting Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., enacting the full Trump tax bill would amount to a $600 million revenue loss for the city.

“This resolution is nothing short of unprecedented and deliberate administrative and fiscal sabotage of D.C.,” Norton said in a statement.

But Republicans, including Gill, argue that the capital’s progressive officials are blocking Trump’s signature legislation for political reasons at the cost of working-class residents.

“Whenever we passed that tax law, we expected Washington, D.C., to conform to those [tax provisions. And unfortunately, they decided that they were going to try to separate from them,” Gill said.

“So to give you a few examples, you have no tax on tips, no tax on Social Security, no tax on overtime pay, a variety of pro-growth, pro-business tax provisions that they decided they wanted to decouple from. So what we’re saying is, we think that that’s bad policy on D.C.’s part, and we’re gonna stop them.”

Congress has the ability to overturn most local laws set by D.C. thanks to the District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973.

If passed by both the House and Senate, however, Republicans’ bill could complicate the tax season for D.C. residents who have already begun filing for their annual returns.

Whistleblower complaint centers on sharing of classified intelligence and reporting of a potential crime, watchdog says

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard looks on during a press briefing at the White House on July 23, 2025.

    Kent Nishimura/Reuters/File

A complaint filed last year by a US intelligence community whistleblower that is now being scrutinized by lawmakers includes claims that the distribution of a highly classified intelligence report had been “restricted for political purposes” and that an intelligence agency lawyer had failed to report a potential crime to the Justice Department, a government watchdog told lawmakers earlier this week.

The Intelligence Community Inspector General provided the broad outline in a Monday letter to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees of the whistleblower complaint it received in May 2025 concerning Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

The letter from Christopher Fox was released by Gabbard’s office late Tuesday. Fox did not detail the substance of the intelligence report or the alleged crime referenced by the whistleblower. The intelligence report at issue is the “most sensitive to date” that has ever been received by the IC inspector general as part of an “urgent concern” complaint, Fox wrote, and would ordinarily only be briefed verbally to the Gang of 8 composed of the top Democrats and Republicans in each chamber of congress and the leaders of the intelligence committees.

    Ad Feedback

The existence of the complaint was first reported by the Wall Street Journal and Gang of 8 lawmakers [were given access to the complaint itself on Tuesday].

Upon reviewing the complaint last June, Fox’s predecessor Tamara Johnson determined that it would meet the “urgent concern” threshold if it were true, a determination meaning that the Gang of 8 would need to be briefed, Fox wrote. But Johnson was unable to determine the credibility of the claims at the time, according to the letter.

The whistleblower then elected to share their complaint directly with the congressional intelligence committees, an option protected under [federal law]. Before sharing a complaint, whistleblowers are required to get security guidance from ODNI to transmit classified complaints securely.

On June 9, 2025, Johnson issued a memo after receiving new evidence finding that while the first allegation by the whistleblower — that a report was withheld for political reasons — did not appear credible, she was unable to assess the credibility of the second allegation, that the IC had failed to report a crime to Department of Justice. The whistleblower still sought to transmit the complaint to lawmakers and the IG kept inquiring “at least monthly” to ODNI since June about how to do so securely, the letter says.

When he was confirmed in October, Fox says he was told by ODNI’s general counsel that “complexity in the classification” of the complaint had contributed to the delay in providing the whistleblower with the necessary security guidance to send it to Congress. Fox says he continued to push for the guidance, and that when he met with Gabbard in December she said she had been unaware of the issue “and committed to providing the guidance as soon as practicable.”

The whistleblower’s lawyer told CNN on Tuesday night that he has yet to receive security guidance on sharing the complaint with the broader intelligence committees, beyond just the Gang of 8.

“They’re also flagging executive privilege concerns, and for me, executive privilege concerns means that this somehow involves the White House,” Andrew Bakaj said.

The day after the Monday Wall Street Journal report on the whistleblower report, the Gang of 8 was given access to a copy of the complaint.

Rep. Jim Himes, the top Democrat on House intelligence committee, told CNN after seeing the complaint that he had “ongoing concerns about both the contents and the delay in it being reported to Congress. I will continue to pursue this matter to ensure that proper oversight is conducted.”

EEOC investigating Nike over alleged discrimination against White workers

    February 4, 2026 / 4:52 PM EST / CBS News

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a federal agency that enforces laws against workplace discrimination, said Wednesday that it is investigating Nike over allegations that the athletic apparel manufacturer discriminated against White workers.

The EEOC alleges in a court filing on Wednesday that Nike may have engaged in “a pattern or practice of disparate treatment against White employees, applicants and training program participants” with respect to hiring, promotion, workplace development and layoffs.

    “Unusual escalation”

A Nike spokesperson said the company has provided the agency with information in an effort to “engage constructively” with the EEOC, calling the probe a “surprising and unusual escalation.”

“We are committed to fair and lawful employment practices and follow all applicable laws, including those that prohibit discrimination,” the spokesperson said. “We believe our programs and practices are consistent with those obligations and take these matters seriously. We will continue our attempt to cooperate with the EEOC and will respond to the petition.”

The EEOC, which filed the subpoena enforcement action in federal court in Missouri, said it is looking into allegations of discrimination tied to Nike’s diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, objectives for 2025. The agency said in astatement Wednesday that it filed the legal action after the company failed to provide information it had subpoenaed.

The agency said it has asked Nike for information dating back to 2018, including the criteria it used to select employees for layoffs and information on how the company tracks workers’ race and ethnicity data.

The EEOC was created under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination.

“Thanks to President Trump’s commitment to enforcing our nation’s civil rights laws, the EEOC has renewed its focus on evenhanded enforcement of Title VII,” said Andrea Lucas, whom President Trump nominated as chair in November 2025.

    DEI probes

The EEOC’s investigation follows a series of other probeslaunched by the U.S. Department of Justice under the Trump administration into organizations and state governments that relied on DEI programs.

Several former DOJ employeestold CBS News last monththat the department’s focus is shifting toward efforts to protect White people against alleged “reverse discrimination.”

A spokesperson for the Justice Department defended the probes, telling CBS News that DEI initiatives have led to “blatant, widespread race and sex discrimination in violation of federal law.”

    “特朗普总统的常识性移民执法政策正在带来美国人民要求的公共安全成果,自‘地铁行动’开始以来,已有4000多名危险的犯罪非法外国人在明尼苏达州被捕,”白宫新闻秘书卡罗琳·利维特周三在接受福克斯新闻数字版采访时回应国土安全部的公告时表示。

    “民主党人开放了我们的边境,允许包括杀人犯、强奸犯、帮派成员和恐怖分子在内的恶性罪犯入侵我们的社区。特朗普总统正在扭转这一可怕的损害,并将这些威胁从我们国家清除出去,”她继续说道。

    “地铁突击行动”是一项持续进行的移民打击行动,重点针对双城(指明尼阿波利斯和圣保罗)以及整个明尼苏达州,这是政府持续努力驱逐非法移民(尤其是暴力罪犯)的一部分。

    国土安全部分享了仅周二一天的部分逮捕案例,包括:

    • 一名来自厄瓜多尔的非法移民,有与未成年人发生性行为和家庭暴力的犯罪记录;
    • 一名来自洪都拉斯的非法移民,因家庭暴力、扰乱治安和酒后驾车被定罪;
    • 一名来自墨西哥的非法移民,因袭击/家庭暴力、盗窃罪、醉酒驾驶和持有毒品被捕;
    • 一名来自萨尔瓦多的非法移民,因非法侵入被定罪。

    “尽管针对我们执法人员的暴力袭击不断,但自‘地铁突击行动’开始以来,我们的特工已在明尼苏达州逮捕了4000多名非法移民,包括杀人犯、恋童癖者、强奸犯、帮派成员和恐怖分子,”国土安全部助理部长特里西娅·麦克劳克林在提供给福克斯新闻数字版的声明中表示。

    “我们需要庇护州的政客们与我们合作,在将公共安全威胁释放回街头之前通知我们,以避免他们再次犯罪并制造更多受害者。我们不会放弃从美国社区中清除犯罪非法移民的使命。”

    联邦官员于2026年1月17日在明尼阿波利斯的亨利·惠普尔主教联邦大楼外抗议。(美联社照片/岩村由纪)

    联邦执法部门于2025年底至2026年初集中在明尼苏达州,当时大规模的福利和社会服务欺诈计划浮出水面。这些计划已导致数十人被捕,其中大多数来自该州庞大的索马里裔人口。

    犯罪非法移民在明尼苏达州涉嫌冲撞移民和海关执法局车辆,针对特工的袭击激增

    该州的移民打击行动引发了煽动者和抗议者走上街头,包括混乱的对抗,如煽动者冲进双城的一座教堂并扰乱周日礼拜。在双城的两起独立事件中,两名美国人在联邦执法部门的抗议中被枪杀,这加剧了对特朗普政府的批评,有人指控联邦政府手上沾有鲜血。

    边境安全负责人汤米·霍曼(Tom Homan) 周三宣布,将有700名执法人员离开该市,他正在努力实现“全面撤军”联邦存在,同时地方官员越来越多地与政府合作。最值得注意的是,当地监狱正在与联邦官员沟通,处理目前被拘留的非法移民,这使得在监狱内而非社区中迅速逮捕成为可能。

    “我们目前有前所未有的数量的县与我们沟通,并允许移民和海关执法局在非法移民上街之前拘留他们。前所未有的合作,”霍曼周三表示。“我再重复一遍:这非常高效,只需要一两名官员就能拘留一名犯罪外国人目标,而不是八到十名官员进入社区逮捕这个公共安全威胁。”

    周末汇总:全美移民和海关执法局抓获的非法移民中包括被判谋杀罪、儿童性虐待者

    “我们目前有前所未有的合作,”霍曼周三表示。“我再说一遍:这很高效,只需要一两个官员就能接管一名犯罪外国人目标的拘留,而不是八到十个官员进入社区逮捕这个公共安全威胁。”

    利维特周三告诉福克斯新闻数字版,霍曼的撤军计划是此次行动在明尼苏达州逮捕4000多名非法移民成功后的后续措施。

    “在特朗普总统的指示下,汤米·霍曼今天承诺从明尼阿波利斯撤军,这是基于这些成就以及明尼苏达州州和地方官员前所未有的新合作。民选官员与总统和联邦执法部门合作的承诺产生了巨大成果,有助于保护美国人的安全,”利维特说。

“President Trump’s commonsense immigration enforcement policies are delivering the public safety results the American people demanded, with more than 4,000 dangerous criminal illegal aliens already arrested in Minnesota since Operation Metro began,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News Digital on Wednesday in response to DHS’ announcement.

“Democrats opened our borders and allowed vicious criminals, including murderers, rapists, gang members, and terrorists, to invade our communities. President Trump is reversing that horrific damage and removing these threats from our country,” she continued.

Operation Metro Surge is an ongoing immigration crackdown operation that focused on the Twin Cities, as well as Minnesota at large, as part of the administration’s ongoing mission to deport illegal immigrants, most notably violent offenders.

DHS shared a handful of arrests made on Tuesday alone, including: a criminal illegal alien from Ecuador with a criminal history of sexual conduct with a minor and domestic assault; a criminal illegal alien from Honduras convicted of domestic abuse, disorderly conduct and driving while intoxicated; a criminal illegal alien from Mexico arrested for assault/domestic battery, larceny, driving under the influence and possession of drugs; and a criminal illegal alien from El Salvador convicted of trespassing.

“Despite coordinated attacks of violence against our law enforcement, our officers have made more than 4,000 arrests of illegal aliens including murderers, pedophiles, rapists, gang members, and terrorists in Minnesota since Operation Metro Surge began,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.

“We need sanctuary politicians to cooperate with us by notifying us before releasing public safety threats back onto the streets to commit more crimes and create more victims. We will not back down from our mission to remove criminal illegal aliens from American neighborhoods.”

Federal law enforcement converged on Minnesota in late 2025 and early 2026 as massive welfare and social services fraud schemes came to light. The schemes have led to dozens of arrests, most of whom are from the state’s large Somali population.

The immigration crackdown in the state sparked agitators and protesters to take to the streets, which included chaotic confrontations, including agitators storming into a church in the Twin Cities and disturbing Sunday services. Two Americans have been fatally shot amid protests by federal law enforcement in two separate cases in the Twin Cities, heightening criticisms against the Trump administration that the federal government allegedly had blood on its hands.

President Donald Trump deployed border czar Tom Homan to the Twin Cities in January, following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents, to continue the operation.

The border czar announced Wednesday that 700 law enforcement officers would depart the city as he works for a “complete drawdown” of federal presence while local officials increasingly work with the administration. Most notably, local jails are communicating with federal officials regarding illegal immigrants currently in custody, allowing for speedy arrests at the jail as opposed to within communities.

“We currently have an unprecedented number of counties communicating with us now and allowing ICE to take custody of illegal aliens before they hit the streets. Unprecedented cooperation,” Homan said Wednesday. “I’ll say it again: This is efficient, and it requires only one or two officers to assume custody of a criminal alien target, rather than eight or 10 officers going into the community and arresting that public safety threat.”

Leavitt told Fox News Digital on Wednesday that Homan’s drawdown plan follows the operation’s success in arresting the more than 4,000 illegal aliens from Minnesota.

“At President Trump’s direction, Tom Homan’s commitment to draw down forces in Minneapolis today follows these achievements and the new, unprecedented cooperation from state and local officials in Minnesota. Commitments like these from elected officials to work with the president and federal law enforcement produce tremendous outcomes that help keep Americans safe,” Leavitt said.

The Trump administration on Wednesday delivered its surest sign yet that it’s de-escalating its highly controversial immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.

Tom Homan, the White House border czar who recently took over the operation, said the administration is “immediately” drawing down 700 federal officers — a huge chunk of the 3,000 agents that have been sent. Homan cited more cooperation from local authorities in apprehending undocumented immigrants from jails, but those local authorities have disputed the claims about their supposed lack of cooperation.

Indeed, the more likely reason for the drawdown appears to be politics — the killing of Alex Pretti a week and a half ago in an encounter with federal agents made the situation untenable for the administration — and now it’s backing off, at least somewhat.

    Ad Feedback

Trump said Wednesday he’d learned his administration could possibly use a “softer touch.”

“I learned that maybe we can use a little bit of a softer touch, but you still have to be tough. These are criminals, we’re dealing with really hard criminals,” he told NBC News in an interview.

And for the first time since Pretti’s death, we have hard data to back that up.

Two new polls from Ipsos and Quinnipiac University are the first high-quality surveys conducted completely after Pretti’s death. The first shows Americans overwhelmingly view his killing as involving “excessive force,” while the second shows voters overwhelmingly see the shooting as “not justified” — with those responses even more pronounced than after Renee Good’s killing by an ICE agent earlier in January.

And importantly: It was actually Republicans who shifted the most against the federal government’s actions between those two events.

The Ipsos poll showed 55% of Americans said Pretti’s killing involved “excessive force,” compared to just 16% who said the use of force was “necessary.” That’s a roughly 3-to-1 verdict against the federal agents involved.

That’s even more lopsided than the already-lopsided verdict on Good’s killing. Back in mid-January, an Ipsos poll showed Americans said 52%-25% that the force used in Good’s killing was “excessive” rather than “necessary.”

(A CNN poll, similarly, showed US adults said 56%-26% that the agent’s use of force in Good’s killing was “inappropriate.”)

As those numbers show, the big difference in reactions to Good’s and Pretti’s killings seems to be the percentage of people willing to vouch for the force used by the federal agents involved.

And the reason that percentage has dropped is almost wholly due to Republicans.

DHS fires back after Dem billionaire David Trone claims ICE is ‘executing people’

Former State Del Neil Parrott, a Republican considering running against David Trone, said the Democrat’s comments are no way to represent a moderate district

FIRST ON FOX: DHS threw cold water on a snowy video of Total Wine billionaire David Trone — who is seeking to recapture his Maryland congressional district from fellow Democrat Rep. April McClain-Delaney — standing outside a warehouse in Washington County while ridiculing ICE’s operations.

The former Democratic congressman, who gave up the seat last term to mount an ultimately unsuccessful bid against now-Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, D-Md., for that open Senate seat, stood outside a Hagerstown-area warehouse and lambasted ICE’s immigration enforcement operations.

“Today we’re just outside the city limit of Hagerstown, stopping by what’s going be a future ICE facility. We know one thing, we don’t need another ICE prison here or anywhere else in America,” Trone said, standing beside the snowy site in Williamsport.

Trone said that “since day one,” ICE has been taking prisoners, “literally executing people on the streets” in “not just Minneapolis… all over the United States.”

TOP DEM LAMBASTED FOR DEMANDING CONGRESS BAN ICE FROM POLLING PLACES: ‘WAIT, WHY…?’

“ICE has to go and we sure don’t want them in Washington County.”

The Cheverly-born billionaire founded the liquor superstore chain Total Wine & More with his brother in 1991 and would be the wealthiest member of Congress if he returned to Washington.

In response to Trone’s video, a DHS official told Fox News Digital exclusively that DHS had indeed purchased land and a facility near Hagerstown, but that they will not be simply warehousing anyone.

“[These] will be very well-structured [detention facilities] meeting our regular detention standards,” the DHS official said.

“Every day, DHS is conducting law enforcement activities across the country to keep Americans safe. It should not come as news that ICE will be making arrests in states across the U.S. and is actively working to expand detention space.”

The official added that ICE is targeting the most “vicious” of illegal immigrants, as Trone’s Maryland was also ground zero for the Kilmar Abrego-Garcia saga.

DEMS BLASTED FOR TRYING TO ‘DEPORT’ ICE FROM SWING COUNTY, REFERENCING ‘BLOOD MONEY’ RENT

“Thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill, ICE has new funding to expand detention space to keep these criminals off American streets before they are removed for good from our communities,” the official said, in apparent reference to the newest purchase.

It reportedly sold for $102 million.

DHS also purchased another massive property in Shartlesville, Pennsylvania, across Interstate 78 from the former Roadside America tourist attraction for reportedly similar reasons.

DEM SENATOR WARNER ADMITS BIDEN ‘SCREWED UP’ THE BORDER, BUT CLAIMS ICE NOW TARGETING NON-CRIMINALS

While Trone said that Hagerstown does not need ICE’s intervention, the agency disagreed.

The official pointed to two recent captures of violent illegal immigrants in the city, which is sandwiched between the Mason-Dixon Line and Potomac River.

Jose Antonio Rodas-Ortes, a criminal illegal immigrant, was recently detained in the Washington County seat, with a rap sheet including sex offenses.

MINNESOTA SHAKEUP SHIFTS LEADERSHIP NOT STRATEGY, WHITE HOUSE SAYS, PUSHING BACK ON ‘RETREAT’ CLAIM

Another illegal immigrant, Mohamed Bah, was captured with a record including aggravated assault with a gun, cocaine-related charges, assault, and illegally possessing a weapon – while Allan Garcia-Pinto was picked up by ICE with a prior drug trafficking conviction.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Trone said that in the past year, the Trump administration has gone “much further” than just targeting criminals.

“They’ve detained children as young as 5 years old, American citizens, and military veterans. ICE only needs to expand its detention space because reprehensible legislation was passed by Congress—with the support of Rep. April McClain Delaney—that strips due process rights and expands this Administration’s ability to carry out this cruel agenda,’ Trone said.

“After DHS has repeatedly lied to the public about its actions, including the lawless killing of Alex Pretti, every American has the responsibility to question these authorities and hold them accountable for what is happening in our communities,” he added.

[Trone’s election] this year is a complex contest, as he faces McClain-Delaney in the primary while Republicans have a slightly stronger hand amid redistricting.

For decades, the seat ran throughout the “Mountain Maryland” and the panhandle and into relatively rural Carroll County north of Washington.

MIKE DAVIS: WHY SURRENDER IS NOT AN OPTION FOR ICE’S MINNESOTA MISSION

Then-Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md., lost his 2010 contest after Carroll was removed, and the district was adjusted to include a slice of dense, liberal Montgomery County – going from a 28-point Bartlett win to a 20-point Bartlett loss in one cycle.

The 2014 race was the closest Republicans have come to taking back the seat, when former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino lost to McClain-Delaney’s husband John by one point.

Since 2022’s latest map, some of the district’s less-Washingtonian confines have been returned, but it still is rated as Democrat-favored.

FAR-LEFT DC SUBURB TELLS RESIDENTS TO CALL 911 IF THEY SEE ICE

Former state Del. Neil Parrott, R-Hagerstown, formed an exploratory committee and is considering a fourth attempt to win the seat. Marine veteran and small business owner Chris Burnett of Gaithersburg is currently declared.

Parrott told Fox News Digital that Trone’s rhetoric is “very disappointing” as he runs to represent what is geographically a moderate district.

“This is not the way to bring our country together or represent District 6. You have very conservative Garrett and Allegany counties, moderate Frederick and liberal Montgomery.”

Citing Maryland’s failure to secure FEMA funds after Potomac tributaries ravaged Westernport and Luke last year, Parrott said it is “no surprise” given how Democrats in the district go “over the top attacking the president and [showing] no intention to work with Republicans at all.”

In December, Trone told Politico that opposition to President Donald Trump will be key to his campaign, saying that the president and his party are committing an “assault on democracy” and weaponizing government.

“Our fundamental freedoms are being dismantled piece by piece,” he said.
