Trump requests delay of China trip because of Iran war

    March 16, 2026 / 6:05 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington— President Trump said Monday that he’s requested to delay his trip to China because of the war with Iran, now in its third week.

He said during an Oval Office event that he “was speaking to China” and indicated he’d “love to” go, “but because of the war, I want to be here. I have to be here, I feel.”

“We’ve requested that we delay it a month or so. And I’m looking forward to being with him,” Mr. Trump said of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The president, who was expected to visit China at the end of the month, has urged Beijing and other countries to help the U.S. reopen the Strait of Hormuz to try to bring down oil prices that have surged since the Iran war began.

In an interview Sunday with the Financial Times, Mr. Trump said that China’s reliance on oil from the Middle East means it should help with a new coalition he’s trying to assemble to restart oil tanker traffic through the strait after Iran’s threats have throttled global flows of oil.

Relations with China have been fraught as both sides have threatened the other with steep tariffs over the past year.

Earlier Monday, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, said during a news conference Monday that China and the U.S. “are maintaining communication regarding President Trump’s visit to China,” but he didn’t address Mr. Trump’s pressure on NATO allies and China to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to French news agency AFP.

Kennedy Center votes to shut down operations for 2 years ahead of Trump-backed renovation project

    March 16, 2026 / 6:07 PM EDT / CBS/AP

The Kennedy Center’s board of directors voted on Monday to shut down operations for two years as President Trump calls for a major overhaul of the D.C.-based performing arts institution.

It’s the latest move by Mr. Trump to put his stamp on the Kennedy Center, drawing stiff criticism from congressional Democrats and performing artists. The center’s board — which includes many members handpicked by Mr. Trump — voted last year to rename it the Trump-Kennedy Center, leading to a wave of performance cancellations.

Mr. Trump has cited the need for repairs as a reason for the closure, which will take effect after this summer’s July 4 celebrations.

“We’re going to ensure it remains the finest performing arts facility of its kind anywhere in the world,” the president told reporters at the White House before the board met Monday.

A rendering of the Kennedy Center’s planned exterior renovation posted on Truth Social by President Trump on March 13, 2026.

The board also voted to install Matt Floca as CEO and executive director, replacing Trump ally Richard Grenell, who oversaw far-reaching changes at the venue. Mr. Trump praised Grenell on Monday, saying he had been a longtime friend, and wished Floca “good luck with everything.”

The Kennedy Center said the vote was unanimous, though Rep. Joyce Beatty didn’t cast a vote. The Ohio Democrat is an ex officio member of the board and sued to preclude the Trump administration from excluding her from Monday’s meeting. Over the weekend, a federal judge ruled she was entitled to participate in the meeting but didn’t require that the board allow her to vote.

Shortly after returning to office last year, Mr. Trump ousted the center’s previous leadership and replaced it with a hand-picked board of trustees that named him chairman. He also brought in Grenell, who served in a variety of capacities during Trump’s first term.

The center’s lineup has since included more Trump-friendly programming, including serving as the venue for the premiere of first lady Melania Trump’s documentary, “Melania.” The board also announced it had renamed the facility to include Mr. Trump’s name, a change scholars and lawmakers say must be initiated by Congress, and physically added the president’s name to the building’s facade.

The fallout from the arts community was swift and intense. Actor Issa Rae, musician Bela Fleck and author Louise Penny were among the numerous artists who withdrew from appearances since last year, while consultants such as musician Ben Folds and singer Renée Fleming resigned. Earlier this month, the executive director of the National Symphony Orchestra, Jean Davidson, left to head the Los Angeles-based Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.

Grenell has called some of the artists who canceled their shows “far-left political activists” who “were booked by the previous far-left leadership.”

Without mentioning the abandoned performances, Mr. Trump said in February he would close the Kennedy Center to fix what he has described as a dilapidated building.

Ahead of the closure, Grenell warned staff about impending cuts that will leave “skeletal teams.”

Floca, Grenell’s successor, had been serving as vice president of operations. According to his LinkedIn page, he joined the Kennedy Center in January 2024, during the Biden administration.

A center press release from the time describes him as “an experienced facilities management professional with a construction management background and an appreciation for whole building design principles.”

Previous experience for Floca listed on LinkedIn includes a handful of positions with the District of Columbia government, among them associate director of sustainability and energy and director of facilities management. He graduated from Louisiana State University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in construction management.

Blue state proposal targets Trump-era ICE hires, banning them from joining local police forces

DHS said the state should be grateful ‘these newly hired ICE officers stepped up to keep criminal illegal aliens off of Rhode Island’s streets’

    By Charles Creitz
    Fox News

Rhode Island Democrats have introduced a bill that would bar police departments from hiring ICE agents brought on during President Donald Trump’s second term, escalating the state’s pushback against federal immigration enforcement.

Immigration enforcement agents, including those within ICE, have come under fire in recent months from Democratic lawmakers and governors opposed to the tactics involved in Trump’s mass deportation agenda, which the president has said are necessary due to the open-border effects of the Biden era.

In Rhode Island, companion bills in the House and Senate dubbed the ICE OUT Act would amend the Law Enforcement Officers’ Due Process Accountability and Transparency Act to add a section denoting the new restriction.

CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATS PROPOSE LEGISLATION PROHIBITING CAR RENTAL COMPANIES FROM SERVING ICE AGENTS

“A law enforcement agency… shall not employ any individual who was hired as a sworn officer of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency on or after January 20, 2025,” the bill reads.

The policy would take effect in October 2026 and would not affect any officers already hired out of ICE’s ranks.

The bill’s top sponsor in the House, Democratic state Rep. Karen Alzate of Pawtucket, said during a recent hearing that the policy would help bolster public-police relationships in Rhode Island, according to the Providence Journal.

ANTI-ICE LAW SET TO TAKE EFFECT IN MAINE AS GOVERNOR FACES INCREASED CRITICISM FOR ALLOWING IT AMID SENATE RUN

An official with the Rhode Island Women’s Bar Association, which supports the bill, also told the paper that the alleged “relaxed hiring standards” of Trump-era DHS would not suffice in the Ocean State.

In response, Acting Assistant DHS Secretary Lauren Bis told Fox News Digital that “sanctuary politicians” in Rhode Island are wrongly casting ICE agents as villains while they continue to be targeted, threatened and doxxed just for doing their jobs.

“They should be grateful that these newly hired ICE officers stepped up to keep criminal illegal aliens off of Rhode Island’s streets,” Bis said.

“To most Americans, our ICE officers are heroes as they put their lives on the line to arrest murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang members, and terrorists.”

Meanwhile, Rhode Island police officials warned in recent state legislative testimony on a broader group of Democratic-led police reform bills, which include the ICE OUT Act, that officer recruitment will take a hit, according to the Fall River Reporter.

Another such bill from state Rep. Joshua Giraldo, D-Central Falls, would ban ICE from being within 200 feet of a polling place. During the session, Giraldo said that when conjecture about stationing federal immigration enforcement near polls arises, “particularly in the current climate; immigrant communities hear a message that is aimed at intimidation.”

DHS officers on duty are already banned from the city proper in the state capital under a January executive order from Providence Mayor Brett Smiley that makes parking lots, schools, parks and government buildings restricted areas.

“[Providence] has the responsibility to manage such property in a manner that ensures public trust, access and delivery of essential city services for all residents,” the mayor’s order read in part.

Fox News Digital reached out to Gov. Dan McKee for indications as to whether he would sign the ICE OUT Act if it reaches his desk, and to DHS for comment.

78-year-old DoorDash driver gets massive tip from thousands of strangers after viral doorbell video

    March 16, 2026 / 12:12 PM EDT / CBS News

A Ring camera in Manchester, Tennessee, captured a delivery that went viral and led to thousands of strangers helping change a man’s life.

The video shows a 78-year-old man named Richard slowly climbing the steps up to a home.

“He should be at home, just chilling, exercising a couple times a day to like … to keep his mobility, but working? No, like, I don’t know. We need to help him,” the homeowner, Brittany Smith, said about Richard in a video she posted to social media.

Smith almost never checks her doorbell camera, but that day her ex-husband, who is a quadriplegic, had sent their daughter a Starbucks treat.

After watching the delivery video, Smith and her ex-husband both decided they needed to track down Richard.

“I was furious. I was like, I know this poor old man is not bringing my very able daughter Starbucks,” Smith said.

Someone recognized Richard and was able to give Smith his last name.

Smith drove around looking for the car that was in the video and found it. Richard lives five minutes away. She knocked on his door and handed him a $200 tip for the delivery to her home.

Richard sold insurance and retired 13 years ago, but after his wife lost her job, he went back to work delivering food – sometimes for 12 hours a day.

“I needed to supplement our income so I started working through DoorDash and it allowed us to pay our bills,” he said.

At first, Smith thought the tip would be just enough, but people online had another idea. Smith said she received “hundreds and thousands of messages” asking her to start a GoFundMe page for him.

The next morning, she did and called it Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again.

In five days, strangers raised almost $1 million for Richard and his wife, who’ve been married for nearly 56 years.

“It’s just really difficult to believe that there’s that many people that are that generous to … try to help us and people that don’t even know us,” Richard’s wife, Brenda, said.

Richard is grateful for the support. He says he wants to continue delivering, but not as often – saying working makes him feel better.

“It’s important to do the best you can and help people. If you help people and do right, you’ll succeed,” he said.

Hyundai stops sales of some 2026 models and plans a recall after child’s death

    March 16, 2026 / 12:44 PM EDT / CBS News

Hyundai Motor North America is halting sales of some 2026 Hyundai Palisade models and planning to recall more than 68,000 of the vehicles after an incident that resulted in the death of a child.

The carmaker announced Friday that it was taking these actions due to an issue with second and third-row power seats, which typically allow occupants to adjust the position of the seat using electric controls. The seat controls may not detect contact with a person or object when the seat is folding or sliding, Hyundai said in a statement.

The company said it is pausing sales of 2026 Hyundai Palisade Limited and Calligraphy trims equipped with the power seats. It is also preparing a recall that will include 60,515 vehicles produced in the U.S. and 7,967 vehicles in Canada.

“The recall repair is currently under development and, once finalized, will be performed at no cost to owners,” Hyundai said in its notice. In the meantime, the company said it is developing an over‑the‑air software update that is expected to be available by the end of March.

    Incident involving a Palisade

Hyundai’s announcement came after a child died in an incident involving a Palisade vehicle. The company said on Friday the incident is still under investigation and that it does not have full details.

“Hyundai extends its deepest sympathies to her family,” it added.

Hyundai did not immediately respond to CBS News’ request for comment.

On Friday, Reuters reported that the incident involved a 2-year-old girl who was killed in Ohio on March 7.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told CBS News it “is aware of this recent tragic incident and is in communication with Hyundai to gather additional information.”

    Hyundai urges caution

Owners of these 2026 Hyundai models should exercise caution when using the second- and third-row power seat functions, Hyundai said in its notice.

The carmaker advised owners to make sure no objects or people, including children, are in the seat or seat-folding area before operating the power seat.

It also said customers should avoid pressing the seatback button during entry or exit when using the second-row one‑touch tilt‑and‑slide feature to access the third row.

Costco recalls meatloaf in more than two dozen states due to salmonella risk

    March 16, 2026 / 2:46 PM EDT / CBS News

Costco is recalling a meatloaf and potato meal kit in nearly 30 states because it may be contaminated with salmonella, the retailer said in a notice to customers.

The product, called Meatloaf with Mashed Yukon Potatoes and Glaze, has sell-by dates of March 5 to March 16 and was sold at Costco locations in 26 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.

Costco said customers who bought the product should not consume it and can return it to a Costco location for a refund.

The announcement came after one of its ingredient suppliers, Griffith Foods, recalled one of the ingredients used in the meatloaf due to possible salmonella contamination.

Salmonella is a bacterial disease typically caused by contaminated water or food and can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. In serious cases, the disease can be fatal.

No injuries or illnesses associated with the recalled product have been reported so far, according to Costco.

Trump-aligned law group urges Jim Jordan to probe ‘nationwide pattern’ of blue-state ‘lawfare’

A spokesperson for Jim Jordan said ‘everything is on the table’

    Fox News

    Published March 16, 2026 1:00pm EDT

FIRST ON FOX: A key conservative group is accusing Democrat-run states of launching frivolous lawsuits against the Trump administration with no actual cause, and is calling on Congress to intervene.

America First Legal, a nonprofit founded by Trump advisor Stephen Miller, is urging House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to open a probe into “lawfare” conducted by blue states that it says is part of a larger effort to block President Donald Trump’s goals.

“America First Legal Foundation (‘AFL’) has uncovered a nationwide pattern to subvert the agenda of the Trump administration: Democrat-controlled states have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration, yet in many cases, the states are unable to show any support for their alleged injuries,” the group’s legal counsel Will Scolinos wrote.

There are over 200 active cases challenging various Trump administration policies right now, according to Lawfare Media’s litigation tracker. Dozens of those have been launched by states like California, Colorado, Minnesota and New York.

Scolinos said AFL launched a probe into various blue states’ lawsuits — and allegedly found many of them have been filed without concrete evidence to back up the claims they make.

“AFL’s investigation reveals that these Democrat-controlled states are pleading allegations of harm for which there is no corresponding evidence to support their claims,” the letter said.

“The fundamental problem is not merely that courts are failing to rigorously enforce standing requirements, but that state attorneys general are filing complaints premised on speculative injuries that their own client agencies cannot substantiate.”

[TRUMP ADMIN SEEKS TO OVERTURN FEDERAL RESTRAINING ORDER LIMITING ICE OPERATIONS IN LOS ANGELES]

The letter said it “raises serious questions about whether these lawsuits are being filed in good faith or are instead designed to obstruct the lawful policies of the Trump Administration through judicial intervention.”

Four states that sued the Trump administration over its transgender policies, for example, said “they lacked records” necessary to respond to AFL’s inquiries over the basis of those lawsuits, the letter said.

Five of 20 states that joined a lawsuit over the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) getting access to federal Medicaid data to probe whether illegal immigrants were getting health benefits similarly told AFL that it could not provide records it requested, the letter said.

“Such conduct not only undermines the integrity of the federal court system but also abuses the judicial process to obstruct the lawful policies of the Trump Administration—policies that the American people voted for,” AFL said.

“Given the Committee’s jurisdiction over Title 28 and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, we request that you investigate this pattern of conduct and consider whether legislative action is warranted.”

A spokesperson for the House Judiciary Committee told Fox News Digital when reached for comment, “We appreciate this tremendous work from America First Legal. We are evaluating the report and everything is on the table.”

Cuba’s national energy grid collapses sparking nationwide blackout

    March 16, 2026 / 3:01 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Officials in Cuba reported an island-wide blackout Monday in the country of some 11 million people as its energy and economic crises deepen. Cuba has blamed its woes on a U.S. energy blockade after President Trump in January warned of tariffs on any country that sells or provides oil to it.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines on X noted a “complete disconnection” of the country’s electrical system and said it was investigating. Officials were implementing protocols to restore the system, the post said.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Friday said the island had not received oil shipments in more than three months and was operating on solar power, natural gas and thermoelectric plants, and the government has had to postpone surgeries for tens of thousands of people.

A massive outage over a week ago affected the island’s west, leaving millions without power. In 2025, nearly exactly a year ago, Cuba suffered a massive outage in western Cuba.

Cuba has relied heavily on foreign assistance and oil shipments from allies like Mexico, Russia and Venezuela. But critical oil shipments from Venezuela were halted after the U.S. attacked the South American country in early January and arrested its then-president, Nicolás Maduro.

While Cuba produces 40% of its petroleum and has been generating its own power, it hasn’t been sufficient to meet demand as its electric grid continues to crumble.

In recent days, videos circulating on social media have shown residents in Havana and other cities banging pots and pans in protest,CBS News Miami reported. The traditional form of public dissent known as a “cacerolazo” reflects growing frustration as the country struggles withelectricity outages, food shortages, and deteriorating living conditions.

Blackouts have previously prompted anti-government demonstrations in 2021, 2022, and 2024.

On Friday, Díaz-Canel confirmed that Cuba washolding talks with the U.S. governmentas the problems continue to deepen.

Earlier this year, a U.S. official told CBS News the Trump administration does not seek to trigger a collapse of the Cuban government, but rather to negotiate with Havana to transition away from its authoritarian communist system.

    Image 43: placeholder

    Image 45: placeholder

Senate Democrats say they want to end the government shutdown but have repeatedly blocked GOP attempts to reopen the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as they push for immigration enforcement reforms.

On Friday, Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., said at a news conference following an antisemitic attack on the Temple Israel synagogue in her state that “certainly” Congress must fund DHS.

However, Slotkin and most Senate Democrats have voted four times to block DHS funding, including several attempts to temporarily reopen the agency while negotiations continue.

    Image 43: placeholder

Slotkin is just one of several Senate Democrats calling for an end to the shutdown. Republicans argue the votes are part of a broader Democratic strategy to blame them for blocking efforts to reopen DHS.

Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., accused Democrats of trying to shift blame for the shutdown.

“Well, that’s what they do, right? And they’re good at it. They’re really good at it,” he told Fox News Digital. “And the big difference is they have 90% of the legacy media backing them up.”

“So it’s hard, but again, four times this afternoon, the Democrats voted against funding DHS,” he continued.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., accused Republicans of using the federal workers of a variety of agencies under DHS, like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as “hostages.”

“I remind my Republican colleagues, we’re going to be back here again and again, winning this debate and eventually winning the American people,” Schumer said.

But Slotkin and others are now signaling an openness to funding Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which many Democrats have sought to deny federal funding to, in addition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

    Image 45: placeholder

“We need, in my view, to cut away all the conversation on ICE, which is its own conversation,” Slotkin said at the news conference.

Republicans have sharply criticized Democrats for denying funding to DHS despite a series of terror-related attacks across the country and a heightened threat environment amid the U.S.-Israeli conflict involving Iran.

An alleged ISIS-inspired bomb plot in New York City and a deadly shooting involving a convicted Islamic State supporter at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, rocked the country last week.

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said he supports funding DHS after voting against full-year appropriations for the department Thursday.

“I think we should,” Warner replied when asked if Democrats should break the deadlock by CBS News’ Margaret Brennan on Sunday.

“What we have offered is let’s pay TSA, let’s pay FEMA, let’s pay … the Coast Guard, let’s pay CISA. I’d even say let’s pay Customs and Border Patrol,” Warner said. “If we can’t agree on ICE reforms, let’s pay everybody else.”

However, it is not clear that enough Democrats would be willing to fund CBP while still negotiating reforms to ICE to end the shutdown. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., has been the lone Democrat so far to cross-party lines and support a full-year DHS appropriations bill.

“Democrats’ position is simple: we want reforms to rein in ICE and Border Patrol,” Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said on the Senate floor Thursday. “We also want TSA and FEMA funded — but we are not going to be blackmailed into cutting a blank check for ICE to get it done.”

Senate Republicans have rejected Democrats’ attempts to fund every agency under DHS except for those handling immigration enforcement.

Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., last week blocked an effort by Murray to fund the non-immigration portions of DHS.

“Members need to get in a room, have tough conversations, and figure out a pathway for the American people,” Britt told Fox News Digital. “Their safety and security should matter more than politics in November, and unfortunately, Democrats continue to try to take hostages.”
