Man in Ohio charged with making threats against mosque | Reuters

    March 18, 2026 10:04 PM UTC / Reuters / By Kanishka Singh

WASHINGTON, March 18 (Reuters) – A man in northeastern Ohio was charged with making threats against a mosque and unlawfully possessing firearms while using controlled substances, federal court records showed.

Wyatt James Brzoska, 20, ‌allegedly made a series of TikTok posts that referenced mass shootings and extremist symbols, including the “black sun,” a neo-Nazi symbol, according to a criminal complaint filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

U.S. rights advocates have warned about rising Islamophobia and antisemitism in recent years due to a spike in anti-immigration sentiment and white supremacist rhetoric, as well as the fallout of Israel’s war in Gaza after a 2023 Hamas attack.

The charges were reported earlier on Wednesday by an NBC affiliate. Brzoska’s representative could not immediately be reached for comment.

The FBI first received a tip about Brzoska in mid-November. At the time, Brzoska said “the threats were a joke,” ‌the complaint said.

In late November, Brzoska posted a video with references to the 2019 Christchurch, New Zealand mosque shootings carried out by a white supremacist that killed 51 people, the complaint said. The FBI again interviewed him and he admitted to owning an AR15 rifle, two shotguns, and a Springfield bolt-action rifle, according to the complaint.

According to the complaint, on March 10 he posted a video where he pointed the camera to a mosque in Ohio, with text that stated: “You will feel it.”

Brzoska faces federal charges for interstate threats and unlawful possession of firearms while using a controlled substance. The complaint said Brzoska’s posts showed his desire to emulate Brenton Tarrant, the Christchurch shooter.

GOP state leaders support Trump’s SAVE America Act in coordinated new letters | Fox News

Coalition argues current registration systems give states with large illegal populations ‘undue influence’ over federal elections

    By Jasmine Baehr
    Fox News

    Published March 18, 2026 5:01pm EDT

FIRST ON FOX: Republican governors and attorneys general are backing President Donald Trump’s push to require proof of citizenship for voting, warning in an exclusive letter that current registration systems rely on an “honor system” and fail to adequately verify who is casting ballots in federal elections.

The coalition argued the gaps give states with large populations of people in the country illegally “undue influence” over federal elections and how billions in taxpayer dollars are distributed.

The letters, from members of the America First Policy Institute’s (AFPI) Governors and Attorneys General Councils and obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital, show coordinated support from Republican state leaders for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, legislation Trump has previously said he has to sign before he’ll sign anything else.

Trump has recently ramped up pressure on Congress to pass the SAVE Act, aka the SAVE America Act, calling mail-in voting “corrupt as h—” as the legislation moved to the Senate floor this week.

“The biggest thing coming up is the SAVE America Act in the Senate,” Trump said Tuesday, adding, “Who would not have voter ID, who would not have proof of citizenship? … The only people who would want not to have that are people that want to cheat.”

Senate Republicans have already taken initial steps to advance the bill, voting 51-48 to begin debate, though its path forward remains uncertain as Democrats remain unified in opposition.

In a letter to Senate leadership, members of AFPI’s Governors Council described the SAVE America Act as a “commonsense measure” to ensure elections are decided “by, and only by, American citizens.”

The letter was signed by a group of Republican governors, including Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, as well as attorneys general from states including Iowa, Alabama and South Carolina.

They argued that while federal law limits voting in federal elections to U.S. citizens, states are “not required to verify citizenship at the time of registration.”

“States with large illegal populations and little to no safeguards… unfairly hold undue influence in our Nation’s law-making process and how billions of dollars in tax revenue are distributed,” the governors wrote.

The governors also pointed to gaps in current systems, noting that while many states require identification at the polls, others lack mechanisms to verify eligibility at the registration stage. They said they are prepared to work with state election officials to implement the law in a way that protects access for eligible voters while strengthening safeguards.

In a separate letter, Republican attorneys general echoed those concerns, focusing on enforcement and the structure of current voter registration systems.

“Existing voter registration procedures largely rely on the honor system, with voters simply checking a box to claim U.S. citizenship without requiring any documentary verification,” the group wrote. The attorneys general said the SAVE Act would close that gap by requiring applicants to provide “documentary proof of United States citizenship” when registering to vote in federal elections.

They emphasized that the bill would preserve state control over election administration.

“[The SAVE Act] does not nationalize elections,” the group wrote, adding that it also would not “disenfranchise American citizens.”

The attorneys general also pushed back on criticism of the proposal, writing: “It is an insult to suggest that minorities, women, or members of the working class are not smart enough to obtain and provide simple proofs of citizenship.”

The governors said they are committed to implementing the law in a way that ensures “no eligible American citizen is unduly burdened” while preventing ineligible registrations.

“Our constituents deserve to know that their votes are protected and that elections in this country are free, fair, and secure,” they wrote.

“President Trump’s SAVE America Act is commonsense legislation supported by the vast majority of Americans who want to ensure our elections are secure and that only American citizens vote in American elections,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said to Fox News Digital in a statement. “Our elections should be treated with the utmost security and the SAVE America Act will ensure that they are.”

Senate votes down effort to restrict Trump’s Iran war powers

    March 18, 2026 / 7:57 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — The Senate defeated a war powers resolution on Wednesday that aimed to block President Trump from ramping up the war with Iran, as the operation approaches a fourth week.

In a 53 to 47 vote, a Democrat-led effort to restrict Mr. Trump from taking military action in Iran fell short for a third time.

The resolution, led by Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, would have directed the president to “remove the United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Iran, unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or a specific authorization for use of military force.” Congress has not authorized military force against Iran.

The vote came as Republicans are holding an unusual and lengthy debate on elections legislation amid pressure by Mr. Trump, who has threatened to withhold his signature from other bills that reach his desk until the measure passes. Democrats were able to force the war powers vote despite the floor takeover because the resolution is privileged.

The Senate had previously defeated an Iran war powers resolution introduced by Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia on March 4. It was the second time in less than a year that the upper chamber had voted down an effort to rein in Mr. Trump’s ability to strike Iran, following a similar vote after last June’s U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

But as the Iran war approaches the one-month mark, Mr. Trump has yet to make clear an exit strategy and has not ruled out sending ground forces into the country. The president has said he expects the war to end “soon,” but hasn’t specified a timeline.

After the early March defeat, a group of Democratic senators vowed to keep pressing the issue if Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not testify in public about the war. The Democratic senators behind the war powers push indicated in a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, that they would abandon votes on a handful of resolutions if the Trump officials testified at public hearings.

“We’re going to use every lever that we have to stop business as usual and force the Senate [to do] what it should have done already,” Booker told reporters earlier this month.

Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, accused the Trump administration of dodging public hearings on Iran out of fear of losing any public support for the war.

“I don’t think they can defend this war,” Murphy told reporters earlier this month. “I think they’ll lose votes in the Senate if they actually have to go in front of the American public and explain why gas prices are so high, explain whether we’re engaged in regime change or whether we’re not, explain how they’re going to get the nuclear weapons and the nuclear material without the ground invasion.”

The Trump administration’s top intelligence officials testified Wednesday to the Senate Intelligence Committee in a hearing that was pegged to the release of the annual worldwide threats assessment, though questions largely focused on Iran. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard deferred to Mr. Trump when pressed on the president’s claims that Iran posed an “imminent” threat to the United States.

The administration and most congressional Republicans have argued that Mr. Trump acted within his legal authority when ordering strikes on Iran. In a letter to Congress in early March, the president said the strikes were necessary to eliminate threats.

“Despite my Administration’s repeated efforts to achieve a diplomatic solution to Iran’s malign behavior, the threat to the United States and its allies and partners became untenable,” the president wrote. He acknowledged that “it is not possible at this time to know the full scope and duration of military operations that may be necessary.”

WASHINGTON, March 18 (Reuters) – Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery will “absolutely not” have a fast track to approval because of political factors, ‌the head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust division told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.

“The idea that somehow enforcement has been politicized is ludicrous,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Omeed Assefi, who declined to comment on ongoing probes.

Warner Bros shares briefly extended losses on the news and were trading down 0.7% on Wednesday afternoon. Paramount trimmed losses to trade down 1.7%.

Analysts have viewed Paramount as facing an easier road to regulatory clearance in the U.S. in part because of its political connections. Paramount CEO David Ellison’s father, billionaire Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, has cultivated ties with President Donald Trump.

“Absolutely not,” Assefi said ‌in response to a question about whether Paramount would receive an easier way through deal review because of political factors.

“I think even Ted Sarandos has been very vocal about the fact that he had a very open and fair and thorough review under us,” Assefi said, referring to the CEO of Netflix.

Netflix’s competing bid for Warner Bros’ studio and streaming assets was under review by the DOJ until it walked away from the deal rather than match Paramount’s offer.

Paramount maintains that its deal poses fewer problems for competition than Netflix’s bid. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has said the state is probing the transaction.

How Russia is benefitting from “America’s war of choice in Iran”

    March 18, 2026 / 1:32 PM EDT / CBS News

Russia is benefitting financially from the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, analysts tell CBS News, as Tehran’s retaliatory strikes paralyze crude oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and send global energy prices skyward.

The U.S. Treasury issued a 30 day waiver last week on sanctions imposed on Russian energy sales over Moscow’s ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The waiver allows Russia to sell oil that was already loaded onto tankers.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the waiver a “narrowly tailored, short-term measure” to “promote stability in global energy markets,” and he insisted it would not “provide significant financial benefit to the Russian government.”

    Some analysts, and Russia, disagree.

Already the increase in oil revenue is “quickly becoming a lifeline for Russia,” Luke Wickenden, a Europe-Russia Energy and Sanctions Analyst at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CERA), told CBS News on Tuesday.

Tourists watch marine life, with the MT Desert Kite oil tanker carrying Russian oil in the background, at Narara Marine National Park in the Arabian Sea, Gujarat, India, March 11, 2026. Amit Dave/REUTERS

“Russian crude oil was trading at around a 10 to 20% discount” before the waiver eased the U.S. sanctions, Wickenden said. “Now, that discount has completely vanished and it’s pretty much at the exact same level as Brent crude,” which is widely seen as the international benchmark for oil prices

Wickenden told CBS News the boost in revenue for Moscow is, at least in part, down to the waiver incentivizing buyers of Russian oil to increase their imports.

“These countries that previously may have been slightly wary of importing this crude oil may actually increase their imports. So, for example, China’s imports have risen 22% compared to last month. Brazil’s has increased by 32% and Singapore’s has nearly tripled,” he said.

Further analysis from CERA shows Russia’s average crude oil export earnings during the first two weeks of the Iran war were worth an estimated $230 million per day — 26% more than February’s daily average, before the conflict.

The Kremlin hasn’t been shy about its boosted profits since the war started.

“We’re talking about additional revenue for our oil companies, which sell oil and petroleum products and are guided by the current price environment,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Sunday. “Company revenues mean increased budget revenues.”

Earlier this month, Bessent also announced a 30-day waiver to allow Indian refiners to buy Russian oil — a step he said was to “enable oil to keep flowing into the global market” amid the war in the Middle East.

That represented a shift in policy for the Trump administration who last year had slapped a 25% tariff on imports from India as a result of its large purchases of Russian oil. India is the second largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels, according to analysis from CERA.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday that the Kremlin’s boosted income could give Vladimir Putin “more confidence that he can continue the war” in Ukraine.

“Our intelligence reports that due to all the sanctions imposed by the United States and the EU, and because of our deep strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, Russia faced a deficit of more than $100 billion in 2026 alone,” Zelenskyy said. “Now, we see they have made around $10 billion over two weeks of the war in the Middle East.”

Wickenden told CBS News that if the Iran war continues, and keeps global energy prices elevated for two or three months, it would “actually offset the losses that it’s [Russia] made in just the last year.”

Asked Wednesday by Sen. Mark Kelly if Russia had gained billions of dollars from rising oil prices and a pause on U.S. sanctions amid the war, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said only, “that is what has been reported,” and then referred the question to the secretaries of the treasury and energy.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe, at the same Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, said he was not an economist and thus he would not “try and do those calculations. But as I talked about earlier, sometimes there are decisions made that will benefit adversaries at the same time policymakers think that it will benefit the American people.”

Ian Bremmer, the founder of global political risk research firm Eurasia group, told CBS News on Tuesday, however, that any financial benefits for Russia are unlikely to be a “gamechanger” for Moscow as it continues its war on Ukraine.

“A lot of Russians were dying, over 1 million casualties they’ve had in four years of the war, but it wasn’t slowing Putin down. So, his willingness to take those consequences, and the willingness to expose his own population to hardship, including economic hardship, has been very hot,” Bremmer said.

Bremmer did say, though, that the boost to Russia’s state coffers will give the Kremlin greater financial “flexibility” as it wages its war, and that could become a sore point for the U.S. and its European allies.

“Given the fact that the Russians are a principled enemy of the United States and its allies around the world, the fact that America’s war of choice in Iran ends up directly helping the Russians, both indirectly and directly, as a consequence of choices of the Trump administration, that is what I think has people bent out of shape,” he said.
