Trump threatens to bar the new US-Canada bridge from opening, demands talks with Ottawa

    February 10, 2026 12:31 AM UTC / Reuters

WASHINGTON, Feb 9 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to bar the new $4.6 billion bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario from opening, in his latest salvo against Canada over trade issues.

Trump cited Canada’s ownership of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, its refusal to stock some U.S. alcoholic beverages on Canadian store shelves, Canada’s tariffs on dairy products and its trade talks with China.

“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve,” Trump said on social media. “We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset.”

In 2012, Michigan’s then-Governor Rick Snyder accepted a Canadian government offer to fund most of the new Gordie Howe bridge’s costs, and took the unusual step of using executive authority to bypass the legislature. Construction began in 2018 and the bridge is nearing completion.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

The U.S Homeland Security Department on January 30 published a rule declaring the bridge as an official port of entry.

The Canadian Embassy in Washington, the office of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the bridge authority did not immediately comment.

Senator Elissa Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat, said “canceling this project will have serious repercussions. Higher costs for Michigan businesses, less secure supply chains, and ultimately, fewer jobs.”

She added Trump is “punishing Michiganders for a trade war he started. The only reason Canada is on the verge of a trade deal with China is because President Trump has kicked them in the teeth for a year.”

In 2023, Detroit was the second-largest U.S. freight port by value and was the largest on the U.S.-Canada border, handling $126 billion of value traded by commercial trucks.

The bridge will help ease truck traffic, which is handled by the Ambassador Bridge. The Gordie Howe Bridge will cut 20 minutes off the crossing time, saving truckers $2.3 billion over 30 years, according to a University of Windsor study.

Trump has made a number of threats against Canada in his second term and drastically hike tariffs on the U.S. northern neighbor. Last month, he said he would impose a 100% tariff on Canada if it follows through on a trade deal with China.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in January traveled to China to reset the countries’ strained relationship and reached a trade deal with Canada’s second-biggest trading partner after the U.S.

Trump also said in January the U.S would decertify Bombardier Global Express business jets and threatened 50% import tariffs on all aircraft made in Canada until Ottawa certified a number of planes produced by U.S. rival Gulfstream. The Trump administration so far has taken no actions against Canadian aircraft.

Feb 9 (Reuters) – A press freedom organization has urged Virginia’s attorney licensing body to discipline a federal prosecutor who applied for a warrant last month to search the home of a Washington Post reporter.

In a February 6 letter to the Virginia State Bar, Freedom of the Press Foundation said prosecutor Gordon D. Kromberg appeared to have withheld information from the magistrate judge who approved the warrant as part of a leak investigation.

The complaint asserted that Kromberg likely violated ethics rules by not informing the judge of the Privacy Protection Act of 1980, a law that limits searches for reporting materials.

The complaint alleged that Kromberg was likely “well aware of applicable law, but deliberately chose not to mention it,” violating a state ethics rule mandating that lawyers disclose to judges legal authorities “adverse to the position of the client.”

“We request that this office take appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including disbarment, and that it expedite disciplinary proceedings due to the dire consequences for First Amendment freedoms if illegal newsroom raids and seizures of journalists’ work product are allowed to go unchecked,” the complaint stated.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The reporter, Hannah Natanson, has covered U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign to fire hundreds of thousands of federal workers and shift remaining workers to implementing his agenda.

In a note to staff, Washington Post Executive Editor Matt Murray said FBI agents searched Natanson’s home and seized her electronic devices. He said she and the paper are not a target of the probe, which is linked to a government contractor accused of illegally retaining classified materials.

Prosecutors allege the contractor, Aurelio Perez-Lugones, took screenshots of classified intelligence reports and printed those documents, according to a criminal complaint.

Investigators also found documents marked “secret” in a lunchbox in Perez-Lugones’ car and in his basement, according to an FBI affidavit.

Ghislaine Maxwell told lawmakers Trump, Clinton ‘innocent of any wrongdoing’ regarding Epstein

Maxwell appeared virtually before the committee on Monday morning

    By Elizabeth Elkind
    Fox News

    Published February 9, 2026 10:15am EST | Updated February 9, 2026 6:44pm EST

The House Oversight Committee’s deposition of Ghislaine Maxwell ended less than an hour after it began on Monday morning, when the convicted accomplice of the late Jeffrey Epstein pleaded the Fifth Amendment.

Maxwell appeared before lawmakers virtually for a closed-door interview in the House bipartisan probe into the federal government’s handling of Epstein’s case.

Her attorney apparently told lawmakers, however, that she could not implicate neither President Donald Trump nor former President Bill Clinton in any wrongdoing.

“[B]oth President Trump and President Clinton are innocent of any wrongdoing. Ms. Maxwell alone can explain why, and the public is entitled to that explanation,” lawyer David Oscar Markus posted on X after the deposition.

Markus also told lawmakers that she would only answer questions if her prison sentence was cut short by Trump, according to the statement.

“If this Committee and the American public truly want to hear the unfiltered truth about what happened, there is a straightforward path. Ms. Maxwell is prepared to speak fully and honestly if granted clemency by President Trump. Only she can provide the complete account. Some may not like what they hear, but the truth matters,” his statement said.

Maxwell is currently serving out a 20-year sentence at a Texas prison.

“As expected, Ghislaine Maxwell took the fifth and refused to answer any questions. This is obviously very disappointing,” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., told reporters after the deposition. “We had many questions to ask about the crime she and Epstein committed, as well as questions about potential co-conspirators. We sincerely want to get to the truth for the American people and justice for the survivors.”

Comer said Maxwell’s lawyer told the committee that she would only answer questions if she was granted clemency by President Donald Trump.

Maxwell did say through her attorney, however, that neither Trump nor
Democrats on the panel, who spoke after Comer, accused Maxwell of trying to lobby for a pardon and demanded that Trump publicly rule out the possibility.

“What we did get was another episode in her long-running campaign for clemency from President Trump, and President Trump could end that today,” said Rep. James Walkinshaw, D-Va. “He could rule out clemency for Ghislaine Maxwell, the monster. The question for all of us today is why hasn’t he done that?”

The former British socialite was found guilty in December 2021 of being an accomplice in Epstein’s scheme to sexually traffic and exploit female minors.

The DOJ said at the time of her sentencing that Maxwell “enticed and groomed minor girls to be abused in multiple ways.”

Comer announced lawmakers would hear from Maxwell late last month during a meeting on holding former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress for refusing to appear for his Epstein probe.

“We’ve been trying to get her in for a deposition. Our lawyers have been saying that she’s going to plead the Fifth, but we have nailed down a date, Feb. 9, where Ghislaine Maxwell will be deposed by this committee,” Comer said at the time.

Contempt proceedings against the Clintons stalled, however, after they agreed via their attorneys to appear in person on Capitol Hill just days before the full House of Representatives was expected to vote on referring the pair to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for criminal charges.

Comer’s team had been in a back-and-forth with Maxwell’s attorney for months trying to nail down a date for her to speak to committee lawyers.

He agreed to delay her previous planned deposition in August after her lawyer asked him to wait until after the Supreme Court decided whether it would hear her appeal. The Supreme Court turned down Maxwell’s case in October.

She and the Clintons’ depositions are part of the House Oversight Committee’s months-long probe into how the government handled Epstein’s case.

Comer told reporters on Monday that five more depositions would happen in the coming weeks including former Victoria’s Secret CEO Les Wexner on Feb. 18, Hillary Clinton on Feb. 26, Bill Clinton on Feb. 27, Epstein accountant Richard Khan on March 11, and Epstein attorney Darren Indyke on March 19.

Social media companies accused of “addicting the brains of children” as trial begins

    February 9, 2026 / 8:31 PM EST / AP

The world’s biggest social media companies face several landmark trials this year that seek to hold them responsible for harms to children who use their platforms. Opening statements in one such trial in Los Angeles County Superior Court began on Monday.

Instagram’s parent company Meta and Google’s YouTube face claims that their platforms deliberately addict and harm children. TikTok and Snap, which were originally named in the lawsuit, settled for undisclosed sums.

Jurors got their first glimpse into what will be a lengthy trial characterized by dueling narratives from the plaintiffs and the two remaining social media companies named as defendants.

Mark Lanier delivered the opening statement for the plaintiffs first, in a lively display where he said the case is as “easy as ABC,” which he said stands for “addicting the brains of children.” He called Meta and Google “two of the richest corporations in history” that have “engineered addiction in children’s brains.”

He presented jurors with a slew of internal emails, documents and studies conducted by Meta and YouTube, as well as YouTube’s parent company, Google. He emphasized the findings of a study Meta conducted called “Project Myst” in which they surveyed 1,000 teens and their parents about their social media use. The two major findings, Lanier said, were that the company knew children who experienced “adverse events” like trauma and stress were particularly vulnerable for addiction; and that parental supervision and controls made little impact.

    Internal company documents

He also showed internal Google documents that likened YouTube to a casino, and internal communication between Meta employees in which one person said Instagram is “like a drug” and that employees are “basically pushers.”

At the core of the Los Angeles case is a 20-year-old identified only by the initials “KGM,” whose case could determine how thousands of other, similar lawsuits against social media companies will play out. She and two other plaintiffs have been selected for bellwether trials — essentially test cases for both sides to see how their arguments play out before a jury.

KGM made a brief appearance after a break during Lanier’s statement and she will return to testify later in the trial. Lanier spent time speaking about her childhood, and particularly focused on what her personality was like before she began using social media, saying her mother called her a “creative spark” as a child. She started using YouTube at age 6 and Instagram at age 9, Lanier said. Before she graduated elementary school, she had posted 284 videos on YouTube.

The outcome of the trial could have profound effects on the companies’ businesses and how they will handle children using their platforms.

Lanier said the companies’ lawyers will “try to blame the little girl and her parents for the trap they built,” referencing the plaintiff. She was a minor when she said she became addicted to social media platforms, which she claims had a detrimental impact on her mental health.

Lanier said that despite the public position of Meta and YouTube being that they work to protect children and implement safeguards for their use of the platforms, their internal documents show an entirely different position, with explicit references to young children being listed as their target audiences.

Lanier also drew comparisons between the social media companies and tobacco firms, citing internal communication between Meta employees who were concerned about the company’s lack of proactive action about the potential harm their platforms can have on children and teens.

“For a teenager, social validation is survival,” Lanier said. The defendants “engineered a feature that caters to a minor’s craving for social validation,” he added, speaking about “like” buttons and similar features.

“This was only the first case — there are hundreds of parents and school districts in the social media addiction trials that start today, and sadly, new families every day who are speaking out and bringing Big Tech to court for its deliberately harmful products,” said Sacha Haworth, executive director of the nonprofit Tech Oversight Project.

Jurors are not being asked to stop using Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or any other forms of social media throughout the course of the trial — which is expected to last about eight weeks — but Judge Carolyn B. Kuhl emphasized that they should not make any changes to the way they interact with the platforms, including changing their settings or creating new accounts.

Kuhl said that jurors should decide the liability of Meta and YouTube independently when they deliberate.

A separate trial in New Mexico, meanwhile, also kicked off with opening statements on Monday.

KGM claims that her use of social media from an early age addicted her to the technology and exacerbated depression and suicidal thoughts. Importantly, the lawsuit claims that this was done through deliberate design choices made by companies that sought to make their platforms more addictive to children to boost profits. This argument, if successful, could sidestep the companies’ First Amendment shield and Section 230, which protects tech companies from liability for material posted on their platforms.

“Borrowing heavily from the behavioral and neurobiological techniques used by slot machines and exploited by the cigarette industry, Defendants deliberately embedded in their products an array of design features aimed at maximizing youth engagement to drive advertising revenue,” the lawsuit says.

    Mark Zuckerberg expected to testify

Executives, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, are expected to testify at the trial, which will last six to eight weeks. Experts have drawn similarities to the Big Tobacco trials that led to a 1998 settlement requiring cigarette companies to pay billions in health care costs and restrict marketing targeting minors.

The tech companies dispute the claims that their products deliberately harm children, citing a bevy of safeguards they have added over the years and arguing that they are not liable for content posted on their sites by third parties.

A Meta spokesperson said in a recent statement that the company strongly disagrees with the allegations outlined in the lawsuit and that it’s “confident the evidence will show our longstanding commitment to supporting young people.”

José Castañeda, a Google spokesperson, said that the allegations against YouTube are “simply not true.” In a statement, he said, “Providing young people with a safer, healthier experience has always been core to our work.”

The case will be the first in a slew of cases beginning this year that seek to hold social media companies responsible for harming children’s mental well-being.

In New Mexico, opening statements began Monday for trial on allegations that Meta and its social media platforms have failed to protect young users from sexual exploitation, following an undercover online investigation. Attorney General Raúl Torrez in late 2023 sued Meta and Zuckerberg, who was later dropped from the suit.

A federal bellwether trial beginning in June in Oakland, California, will be the first to represent school districts that have sued social media platforms over harms to children.

In addition, more than 40 state attorneys general have filed lawsuits against Meta, claiming it is harming young people and contributing to the youth mental health crisis by deliberately designing features on Instagram and Facebook that addict children to its platforms. The majority of cases filed their lawsuits in federal court, but some sued in their respective states.

TikTok also faces similar lawsuits in more than a dozen states.

Other countries, meanwhile, are enacting new laws to limit social media for children. In January, French lawmakers approved a bill banning social media for children under 15, paving the way for the measure to enter into force at the start of the next school year in September, as the idea of setting a minimum age for use of the platforms gains momentum across Europe.

In Australia, social media companies have revoked access to about 4.7 million accounts identified as belonging to children since the country banned use of the platforms by those under 16, officials said. The law provoked fraught debates in Australia about technology use, privacy, child safety and mental health and has prompted other countries to consider similar measures.

The British government also said last month it will consider banning young teenagers from social media as it tightens laws designed to protect children from harmful content and excessive screen time.

As pressure mounted to release Epstein files, FBI employees compiled allegations against other men

As the Justice Department faced mounting pressure to release the Epstein files last year, FBI employees were compiling what one described as “salacious” allegations against men in Jeffrey Epstein’s orbit and putting together a presentation that included a list of “prominent names” in the investigative files.

The 21-slide presentation — released with more than 3 million documents in the Epstein files — outlines the various federal investigations into the late convicted sex offender, his death and his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of child sex trafficking.

One slide lists a dozen names and notes that “numerous” tips were made anonymously to the FBI’s tip line. Some of the tips included claims of sexual misconduct, while others were not allegations of criminal conduct but rather indicated an association with Epstein.

The men listed, including President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, have been known to have associations with Epstein and have denied wrongdoing regarding previous allegations against them.

Efforts by FBI employees to compile some of the most explosive claims contained in the Epstein files took place as public backlash mounted last year over the Trump administration’s decision to shut the door on releasing more documents. Separately, the FBI compiled a list of sexual assault allegations related to Trump this past August — many of which appear to have come from unverified tips.

Eventually, Congress passed a law in November demanding transparency and the release of all documents, forcing the Trump administration to act.

It’s not clear from the presentation what steps had been taken to verify any of the allegations. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche told CNN earlier this month that the Department of Justice has no plans to bring additional charges related to Epstein, saying there was nothing in the files to warrant new prosecutions.

CNN has reached out to the DOJ. The FBI declined to comment.

Top Trump administration officials early last year hyped the release of the Epstein files and a purported “client list,” which has been long sought since Epstein’s death in 2019, including by Trump’s base.

Attorney General Pam Bondi initially said last February that a client list was sitting on her desk — though the administration said she was referring to other documents. Later that month, she gave a group of rightwing influencers binders labeled “The Epstein Files: Phase 1,” which turned out to contain already publicized documents related to the sex offender.

Under pressure because of the lack of new details, Bondi promised more documents would be released.

But the administration began backtracking, CNN previously reported, sometime around May 2025 — the same month that Bondi told Trump in a meeting that his name was included in the files.

This sparked backlash that intensified after the DOJ said on July 7 in an unsigned memo that it had concluded there was no client list and that Epstein had died in 2019 by suicide — undercutting conspiracy theories to the contrary. The department did not plan to release any new documents on the matter, an official told CNN at the time.

Three days later an email with the subject line “Response to 07/10/2025 Director’s call” broke down material recovered on Epstein’s devices, evidence items seized, and victims’ reports as to whether they had accused others of sexual misconduct. The short summary indicates at least four or five of Epstein’s victims had accused unnamed men of sexually abusing them, but that the cases were referred to local law enforcement because “there was not enough evidence to federally charge these individuals.”

In an email later in July, a person at the FBI was asked to write summaries of “salacious statements” made about 13 people, including Trump, Clinton, Mountbatten-Windsor, billionaire Leon Black, and ex-movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Among the short statements provided were details of newly disclosed but unverified claims of sexual assault made against Trump, along with similar claims against Weinstein and Black.

Portions of the emailed list were included in the 21-page presentation that included the logo of the FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force.

The presentation was created sometime after mid-July 2025, given dates listed in the slides. It featured a timeline of various state and federal investigations into Epstein, details about financial transactions between Epstein and Maxwell, and a list of people who attended “proffer” sessions – meetings with prosecutors in which a person can lay out what evidence or testimony they could provide in a criminal case.

In response to a request for comment, the White House referred to a press release issued by the Justice Department last month that said the released documents contain “untrue and sensationalist claims against President Trump that were submitted to the FBI right before the 2020 election.”

“To be clear, the claims are unfounded and false,” the press release said, “and if they have a shred of credibility, they certainly would have been weaponized against President Trump already.”

Trump has never been accused by law enforcement of wrongdoing related to Epstein.

An attorney for Black, who stepped away from running the private equity firm Apollo Global Management in 2021 over his ties to Epstein, said in a statement that there was “absolutely no truth” to the allegations and maintained their relationship was only business related.

“Mr. Black asked for an independent investigation of his relationship with Epstein. The Dechert law firm investigated and reviewed more than 60,000 documents, interviewed more than 20 people and concluded that Mr. Black paid Epstein for estate planning and tax advice and that he had no awareness of Epstein’s criminal activities,” lawyer Susan Estrich wrote.

“Of the three civil lawsuits filed against Mr. Black, one has been dismissed, the other withdrawn and the other is currently facing a case terminating motion for sanctions. There is absolutely no truth to any of the allegations against Mr. Black,” Estrich said.

Representatives for Clinton and Mountbatten-Windsor have not responded to a request for comment.

Weinstein is incarcerated, awaiting a third trial in New York on charges of sexual assault after having already been convicted of similar charges in Los Angeles.

“This is an unverified FBI tip, not a finding, not sworn testimony, and not evidence of anything. Mr. Weinstein denies the conduct described,” Juda Engelmayer, spokesperson for Weinstein, said in a statement to CNN.

“These intake documents exist precisely so anyone can call in anything — including stories that closely resemble allegations that have been in the public domain for years. The fact that a familiar-sounding narrative appears in a tip line during a high-profile document release does not make it true, tested, or corroborated,” he added.

Clinton has denied accusations of wrongdoing related to Epstein. He’s scheduled to appear in a deposition as part of the House’s probe into Epstein later this month – and has pushed for that testimony to be made public.

“I will not sit idly as they use me as a prop in a closed-door kangaroo court by a Republican Party running scared,” Clinton said in a post to X last week. “If they want answers, let’s stop the games & do this the right way: in a public hearing, where the American people can see for themselves what this is really about.”

Mountbatten-Windsor – the former Prince Andrew who was stripped of his royal title last year over his friendship with Epstein – has not responded to the latest file release.
