Nancy Guthrie search activity ramps up near her home in Tucson, Arizona

Law enforcement activity ramped up late Friday night at a location about two miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home in Tucson, Arizona, nearly two weeks into the search for the missing 84-year-old. It was unclear what drew investigators to the site.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told CBS affiliate KOLD that the scene is connected to the Guthrie case, and they are “actively working a lead. I cannot say anything else.”

After several hours, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a brief statement saying: “Law enforcement activity is underway at a residence near E Orange Grove Rd & N First Ave related to the Guthrie case. Because this is a joint investigation, at the request of the FBI – no additional information is currently available.”

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen on Jan. 31 and was reported missing the following day, Feb. 1. Authorities believe she was abducted from her home in the middle of the night.

In an update Friday afternoon, the sheriff’s department said DNA that didn’t belong to Nancy Guthrie’s or those in close contact with her had been collected from her residence, and investigators are working to identify who it belongs to. The department did not disclose where the DNA was found on the property.

The FBI on Thursday released the first physical description of a male suspect wanted in connection with her disappearance. He is described as having an average build and an approximate height of 5-foot-9 or 5-foot-10.

The suspect was seen on video recovered from the Nest doorbell camera system at Guthrie’s home from the night she is believed to have been abducted. In the video and images released by the FBI, was wearing a ski mask, gloves and backpack.

The FBI said the backpack was a black, 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack model, which CBS News has learned is sold exclusively at Walmart. Sources with knowledge of the investigation told CBS News that law enforcement officials reviewed video at one Walmart location in Tucson. CBS News reached out to Walmart corporate offices, but a spokesperson declined to comment.

Investigators also recently found a pair of black gloves that are being tested for DNA, sources close to the investigation confirmed to CBS News.

The FBI has increased its reward from $50,000 to $100,000 for information leading to either the location of Nancy Guthrie, and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance. The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department said they’ve received thousands of tips so far in the case.

Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have released several emotional video statements pleading for their mother’s safe return and urging the public to share any information that might help solve the case.

A ransom note that was first sent to KOLD demanded payment in bitcoin, and the Guthrie family released a video offering to pay despite receiving no proof of life. A second ransom note was also received, and two deadlines that were mentioned came and went with no further contact.

After 33 years on the route, a New Jersey mailman who loved helping people retires

Demarest, New Jersey — Residents in Demarest, New Jersey, packed into a local restaurant recently, all of them wanting a picture — or better yet, a hug — from Joe DiTore.

For the past 33 years, DiTore has really delivered for people in this community, both in their mailboxes and their personal lives.

But now DiTore, a mailman, is retiring.

Residents in Demarest said DiTore is more than just a mailman. Neighbors will tell him when they have medical issues, or DiTore will let a resident know when a garage door is open at the wrong time. One says they would even list him as an emergency contact.

Before DiTore became a mailman in 1992, he owned a small business painting houses. And although he loved helping people, he hated charging them. So, he found a job where he could still be the person he wanted to be just for free.

“I always tell people I’m around if you need me,” DiTore told CBS News.

DiTore said he also helps residents in the neighborhood with errands around town.

But beyond being a helpful hand and watchful eye, DiTore has been a real source of comfort for many in Demarest, like Erin Kitzie.

When her dog Cooper died, she told DiTore first, and he gifted her a bracelet with her dog’s name on it.

“I love my dad, but I honestly see him as sort of a father figure,” Kitzie said of DiTore.

And for all of those years of seemingly small kindnesses, residents wanted to make sure DiTore knew just how much it truly meant. Residents say that because he genuinely cares, they, in response, care for him.

DiTore said he hopes he can come by and check on the residents occasionally despite his retirement.

“They say you get back what you give, but in my case, I received it tenfold,” DiTore said. “I will miss you more than I can say.”

Trump administration releases Maritime Action Plan aimed at resurrecting US shipbuilding

Feb 13 (Reuters) – The Trump administration on Friday released its plan to rebuild U.S. shipbuilding and other maritime businesses, paid for in part by port fees on cargo delivered to the United States on ships made in China – levies the U.S. and China agreed to pause for one year.

The Maritime Action Plan offers a road map for the revival of U.S. shipbuilding, which has shrunk since World War Two and now severely lags China and other nations.

Coming in at more than 30 pages, the plan calls for establishing maritime prosperity zones to bolster investment, reforming workforce training and education, expanding the fleet of U.S.-built and U.S.-flagged commercial ships, establishing a dedicated funding stream through a Maritime Security Trust Fund and reducing regulations.

The Trump administration early last year announced plans to levy fees on China-linked ships to loosen the country’s grip on the global maritime industry and help pay for a U.S. shipbuilding renaissance. The so-called Section 301 penalties followed a U.S. probe that concluded China uses unfair policies and practices to dominate global shipping.

The fees, which sparked intense pushback from the global shipping industry and intensified tensions between the world’s two largest economies, hit on October 14 and were expected to generate an estimated $3.2 billion annually from Chinese-built vessels sailing to U.S. ports. But China retaliated with its own port fees on U.S.-linked ships and the tit-for-tat fees disrupted global shipping. Soon after, the two sides struck a deal to put the levies on hold for 12 months.

On Friday, Shipyard owners, investors and the bipartisan sponsors of the Shipbuilding and Harbor Infrastructure for Prosperity and Security (SHIPS) for America Act welcomed President Donald Trump’s maritime plan, which landed months later than hoped.

U.S. Senator Todd Young, a Republican from Indiana, said there is substantial overlap between Trump’s vision and the plan in that proposed law, which he reintroduced last year with Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona and other lawmakers.

Importantly, the SHIPS Act would establish a Maritime Security Trust Fund to reinvest port fee proceeds into maritime security and infrastructure projects such as shipyard revitalization. It has rare backing from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers in Washington, but has not made swift progress.

“The announcement today should serve as a wake-up call for Congress to act quickly on this bill in order to provide the legal authorities and resources necessary to make this plan a reality,” Young said. “It’s time to make American ships again.”

U.S. women’s hockey tops Italy 6-0 to advance to Winter Olympics semifinals

The upstart Italians didn’t make it easy on the Americans, and that’s everything veteran forward Kelly Pannek could have asked for as the top-seeded U.S. continued its run through the Olympic women’s hockey tournament.

A festive atmosphere, a determined opponent, a little chippiness and a 6-0 win in which 13 players — led by Kendall Coyne Schofield’s two goals — registered at least a point.

“It feels like right now we’re finding different ways within our identity to get the job done,” Pannek said. “And it’s taken every single person on the ice on our team and our staff to do it. And it feels like we’re still building to what we really can be.”

After a first period in which the Americans outshot Italy 20-2, but only led 1-0 on Megan Keller’s goal, the U.S finally broke through with a five-goal second period.

Laila Edwards, Hannah Bilka and Britta Curl-Salemme also scored. Gwyneth Philips finished with six saves as the Americans posted their fourth straight shutout.

The Group A-winning U.S. has outscored its opponents by a combined 26-1 in winning all five games, with the lone goal allowed in a 5-1 tournament-opening win over Czechia.

With Coyne Schofield, Lee Stecklein and Grace Zumwinkle making the scoresheet Friday, the U.S. has only two skaters — defenders Cayla Barnes and Rory Guilday — without a point.

“At the other day I think it’s everyone’s willing to do whatever it takes to be a part of the success of this team,” Coyne Schofield said. “And whatever role’s asked of us on a given night, that’s what we’re going to do.”

Now two wins away from winning its third Olympic gold medal, the U.S. advanced to the semifinals on Monday. The Americans will play either Sweden, after the Group B winner upset Czechia 2-0 earlier in the day, or Germany, should the seventh-seeded team knock off Canada in its quarterfinal on Saturday.

Finland faces Switzerland in the other quarterfinal on Saturday.

The game on Friday featured dueling chants, with each chorus of “USA! USA! USA!” met with an even louder “EEE-TA-LIA!”

Italy stood little chance making its second Olympic appearance, each time as the host team. Advancing to the knockout round was considered an accomplishment for the Italians, who went 2-2 in the preliminary round, and after going 0-4 at the 2006 Turin Games.

Goalie Gabriella Durante stole the show by stopping 19 of 20 shots through the opening period, and 45 overall.

“There’s definitely obviously sadness and disappointment, but at the same time, I don’t think the team has any regrets in how hard we played,” said Durante, who noted the team watched the movie “Miracle,” about the U.S. men’s run in the 1980 Olympics, as motivation the night before.

“We were just believing from the very start. And obviously the second it got away from us a little bit, but at the same time like it’s the best in the world,” she added. “I’ll remember it for the rest of my life, the crowd specifically, the atmosphere.”

Things also got heated following a scuffle after Bilka scored to put the U.S. up 6-0 late in the second period. As Abbey Murphy and Italy’s Franziska Stocker were sent off for penalties, U.S. coach John Wroblewski began shouting across the bench at Italy coach Eric Bouchard.

Wroblewski said he was unhappy with the calls seeming to favor the Italians, because Murphy stepped in after Bilka was cross-checked from behind.

“I think his team got frustrated for sure,” Bouchard said. “They’re the best hockey team in the world, and they found a way to capitalize on their chances. But that third period, the girls never quit.”

Sweden upsets Czechia 2-0

Coach Ulf Lundberg declared “the time is now” for Sweden before the women’s hockey tournament opened.

A little more than a week and five wins later, his young, talented and fearless team has delivered.

Hanna Olsson scored, Ebba Traff Svensson stopped 29 shots, and Sweden upset Czechia 2-0 on Friday to advance to the semifinal round for the first time in 12 years.

“It’s a wonderful feeling,” Lundberg said of a team that has finished no better than sixth at the past five world championships. “Going back to the worlds in the Czech Republic, we were close. But everyone talks about when are they going to take the step to the semifinal? And now we have done it. I’m so satisfied.”

After Olsson scored a power-play goal 4:47 into the second period, Hilda Svensson sparked a huge celebration by sealing the victory with an empty-net goal with 25 seconds remaining.

Sweden had not advanced to the semifinals since finishing fourth at the 2014 Sochi Games. And the nation is in position to earn its third Olympic medal, and first since winning silver at the 2006 Turin Games, when Sweden upset the U.S. in the semifinals.

The Swedes feature a young, talented roster made up of a core of the team that won silver at the 2018 Under-18 championships. There are eight players 22 and younger, with seven currently competing at U.S. colleges. They include Svensson, the 19-year-old Ohio State freshman, who’s tied for seventh in the nation with 44 points (15 goals, 29 assists) in 26 games.

Sweden entered the quarterfinals as the tournament’s sixth seed after going 4-0 through preliminary round play to win the Group B title.

Czechia’s Klara Peslarova finished with 21 saves.

The loss was a major disappointment for a Czech team on the rise since finishing seventh in its Olympic debut at the 2022 Beijing Games. Czechia has since won two bronze medals — its first in women’s play — and finished fourth twice over the past four world championships.

“There’s just no words for this. It hurts. It’s going to hurt for a long time,” Natalie Mlynkova said. “We were supposed to have this one.”

“We were all scared,” says child who ran as ICE operation unfolded near New Jersey school bus stop

A 10-year-old boy recounted fleeing Thursday morning as a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation began near his school bus stop in Lindenwold, New Jersey, saying, “We all were scared.”

Dylan, who is a U.S. citizen, told CBS News it started as a normal day — until he heard his classmates suddenly start shouting “ICE.”

“Out of nowhere, people just start running, saying that ICE is over there, and everybody was running,” Dylan said.

He told CBS News that agents started following him as he ran home. In a home security video, Dylan is seen frantically banging on the door, pleading for his mom to let him in. He said he was afraid ICE was trying get inside his home.

Doorbell video from Woodland Village Apartments on Clementon-Gibbsboro Road shows children running through the parking lot on Thursday morning. The Lindenwold School District said fourth- and fifth-graders were waiting at their bus stop when an ICE operation began at the complex.

CBS News has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

“The presence of multiple enforcement vehicles caused significant fear and confusion, and several students ran from the bus stop,”the district told families in a social media postThursday morning. “Our bus driver acted quickly and responsibly, circling back multiple times to ensure as many children as possible were safely transported to school.”

“ICE Agents are NOT at the Lindenwold School District,” the district added.

Community members in New Jersey gathered Friday afternoon to protest ICE. New Jersey Rep. Donald Norcross demanded more transparency, saying, “DHS has to come forward, be transparent. If you’re doing ‘the right thing,’ then there should be no problem.”

Dylan, like many others at the school, said the incident is hard to talk about “because I feel like they’re just going to come out of nowhere and take my parents.”

Maria, a U.S. citizen whose children attend the local school, has lived in the area for more than a decade. She told CBS News the incident follows increased ICE activity in the neighborhood.

“There’s a lot of kids right now, they’re traumatized, they don’t want to go to school,” Maria said.

The school district said it’s providing counseling to any students who need it.

U.S. women’s curling team slides to victory over Canada in an Olympic first

The U.S. women’s curling team was surprised to learn that their defeat of Canada on Friday marked an Olympic first.

“If that’s true,” Minneapolis native Taylor Anderson-Heide said after the 9-8 nailbiter, “I think we just played a really good game. They’re No. 1 in the world.”

Tara Peterson of Shoreview, Minnesota, chimed in: “It just always feels really good to beat (Canada skip) Rachel Homan. So any team to beat them, that’s pretty impressive.”

Until Friday, the American women had never beaten Canada — a perennial favorite that has medaled in every Winter Games since curling was added to the Olympics in 1998. The U.S. men beat the Canadians for the first time in the 2018 round-robin and again in the semifinals en route to their gold medal victory in Pyeongchang.

Canada’s Team Homan has for years been considered the best in the world.

In Friday’s match, the U.S. managed to capitalize on a few weak shots by Canada. After the win, the Americans walked together down the ice and back to their coaches, raising fists in triumph.

Peterson, like Anderson-Heide, couldn’t help but add a qualifier to her response to questions from The Associated Press: “Apparently, we’ve never beat them in the Olympics before. That makes it just extra special.”

This year’s American women’s curling team — like their Gen-Z men’s counterparts — meld approachability with ambition. Alongside Anderson-Heide and Peterson, the team includes skip Tabitha Peterson, who’s Tara’s older sister, as well as cool-as-a-cucumber Cory Thiesse, who has already won a silver medal in the mixed doubles event. Aileen Geving, from Minnesota, is an alternate.

Three of them have jobs other than curling, and three are mothers to young children. Tara is a dentist, Tabitha a pharmacist and Thiesse a lab technician.

Tara gave birth to her son, Eddie, in September 2024 and a few months later, Tabitha had a daughter, Noelle. Geving had daughter Sienna following the 2018 Games.

“That’s the cool thing about the sport of curling. Your average Joe is playing against Olympians and we’re friends,” Tara Peterson told CBS News Minnesota ahead of the Olympics. “And after the game we’ll sit down, we have dinner. We have a beer. It’s just a normal life.”

Tabitha Peterson told CBS News Minnesota she thinks of the Olympics “as just another tournament.”

“It’s another competition. And try not to focus like, oh my God, we’re at the Olympics,” she said.

They have several matches left in the round-robin before the semifinals next Friday. The are 2-1 after Friday’s match, with a win against Korea and loss to Sweden alongside the milestone.

Rubio steps into Munich spotlight as Trump leans on him to carry Vance’s populist message abroad

Secretary of state’s attendance follows JD Vance’s widely publicized speech that drew backlash from European officials

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is leading the U.S. delegation to the high-profile Munich Security Conference — one year after Vice President JD Vance took the German stage in a speech that stunned many in Europe and became one of the defining moments of Trump’s early second term abroad.

“President Trump has assembled the most talented team in history, including Vice President Vance and Secretary Rubio, who are working in lockstep to notch wins for the American people,” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales told Fox News Digital ahead of Rubio’s speech.

“The President and his team have flexed their foreign policy prowess to end decades-long wars, secure peace in the Middle East, and restore American dominance in the Western Hemisphere. The entire administration is working together to restore peace through strength and put America First.”

The Munich Security Conference is an annual high-level forum in Germany that draws hundreds of senior decision-makers — including heads of state, top ministers, military leaders and policy influencers — for closed-door and public talks on global security crises.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Gov. Gavin Newsom of California are among notable Democrats attending the conference, in addition to Rubio.

Vance became one of the central figures at the 2025 Munich gathering after a widely publicized speech that drew heavy attention and applause from conservatives following the Biden administration. It also sparked backlash among some European officials who viewed his remarks as confrontational.

Rubio’s attendance at the 2026 meeting follows a lengthy history of the State Department chief earning a series of different roles under the second administration, including acting national security advisor, secretary of state, acting archivist of the United States and acting administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Amid rising trans-Atlantic tension, the secretary of state issued a warning to Europe as he departed for his trip to Germany Thursday.

VANCE, RUBIO GREET AMERICAN WINTER OLYMPIANS IN ITALY

“The Old World is gone,” Rubio told reporters as he departed for Europe Thursday. “Frankly, the world I grew up in, and we live in a new era in geopolitics, and it’s going to require all of us to re-examine what that looks like and what our role is going to be.”

President Donald Trump and his administration repeatedly have put Europe on notice for allegedly devolving into a culture of political correctness, speech policing, and a security system that heavily relies on U.S. funding and military might. Amid the rhetoric on Europe, the administration has continued to underscore the importance of U.S.-Europe relations, including Rubio on Thursday.

“We’re very tightly linked together with Europe,” he told reporters. “Most people in this country can trace both, either their cultural or their personal heritage, back to Europe. So, we just have to talk about that.”

Vance used his Munich Security Conference speech to deliver a blunt warning to Europe’s political class 2025, arguing the continent’s biggest danger is not Moscow or Beijing, but what he described as internal democratic decay that has festered due to political correctness and censorship.

He accused European governments and institutions of drifting toward censorship, citing policies he said police speech, curb religious expression and pressure online platforms. He also argued elites allegedly were trying to manage elections and debate by dismissing unwelcome outcomes and branding dissent as “misinformation” to sideline populists and blunt voter backlash.

“What I worry about is the threat from within, the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values — values shared with the United States of America,” Vance said in 2025 in the speech that left many European leaders stunned, according to reports at the time.

Vance was also overseas this week, holding meetings with Armenia and Azerbaijan, including signing a peaceful nuclear cooperation with Armenia and a strategic partnership with Azerbaijan.

That trip followed both Vance and Rubio joining a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni earlier in February in Italy, and Vance leading a delegation that included Rubio during the Olympics’ opening ceremony in Milan.

A source familiar told Fox News Digital that there were never plans for the vice president to attend the 2026 conference in Munich.

TRUMP HAILS RUBIO AS DIPLOMATIC MENTOR AS SECRETARY OF STATE’S POWER GROWS

Vance’s foreign policy footprint became subject of political media scrutiny earlier in 2026 when the U.S. military successfully captured Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. Vance was not among high-profile U.S. leaders who joined Trump at his Mar-a-Lago, Florida, resort to monitor the operation, unlike Rubio who was with the president.

The VP’s office brushed off media alarm over his absence, citing that Trump and Vance limit the “frequency and duration” of time they spend together outside the White House due to “increased security concerns.”

The vice president is by no means is expected to attend the Munich Security Conference each year, with former Vice President Mike Pence, for example, attending the conference twice under the first Trump administration, and former Vice President Kamala Harris attending three times under the Biden administration. Previous secretaries of state such as John Kerry, Antony Blinken and Clinton have attended and addressed the body in previous years.

Vance additionally attended a separate Munich Security Conference event, the Leaders Conference, in Washington, D.C., in May 2025.

Trump praised Vance’s 2025 speech as “brilliant” in a statement to reporters at the time, remarking that “they’re losing their wonderful right of freedom of speech” in Europe and that Vance made a strong case against much of Europe’s lax immigration polices.

Since then, Trump’s team repeatedly has echoed the same critique in official channels, including a State Department push that has blasted European speech restrictions and targeted the European Union’s Digital Services Act as “Orwellian” censorship, alongside new visa restrictions aimed at foreign officials accused of censoring Americans online.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — President Donald Trump’s rally on Friday followed a familiar plan: He entered to Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA,” promoted GOP candidates, bashed his predecessor and implored the audience to vote Republican in the midterm elections. The speech ended to the thump of the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.”
