Tom Homan: “Things weren’t perfect” in Minneapolis crackdown, but ICE not backing down on mass deportations

    May 5, 2026 / 6:45 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Camilo Montoya-Galvez

    Camilo Montoya-Galvez Immigration Correspondent

Camilo Montoya-Galvez is the Immigration Correspondent at CBS News, where his reporting is featured across multiple programs and platforms, including national broadcast shows, CBS News 24/7, CBSNews.com and the organization’s social media accounts.

Phoenix— In an exclusive interview with CBS News, Tom Homan, President Trump’s border czar, conceded “things weren’t perfect” during the large-scale immigration enforcement crackdown in Minneapolis but stressed that the administration is not backing down from its mass deportation effort.

“Things weren’t perfect. We addressed it. We fixed it,” Homan said when asked if he believes the administration made mistakes and went too far during the Minneapolis-area crackdown, known as Operation Metro Surge.

Homan said he has discussed changes and ways to improve immigration enforcement with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Todd Lyons, the acting head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement who is set to leave the agency later this month.

“I’ve had the discussions with Secretary Markwayne Mullin. He agrees. We can have mass deportations, but do it in a smarter way, which we’re doing,” Homan added during an interview in Phoenix on Tuesday during the annual Border Security Expo.

Earlier this year, Mr. Trump charged Homan with winding down the Minneapolis operation after the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Good by federal immigration agents sparked intense, bipartisan backlash.

Asked whether he believes that the ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents involved in Pretti and Good’s killings should face consequences if any wrongdoing is found, including termination, Homan said, “Yes.”

“If they violated the law, they’ve got to be held responsible,” Homan added. “When they violate policy, you’ve got to be held responsible.”

Homan said he did not want to comment further, since the government investigations into the fatal shootings remain ongoing.

A “smarter approach” to ICE arrests

Homan said the reason the public is now seeing fewer viral videos of ICE agents making arrests is because the agency has prioritized “targeted” operations focused on arresting people who have criminal records, in addition to being in the country illegally.

He noted that, since the Minneapolis operation was scaled back, Border Patrol agents have not been making seemingly random immigration stops at parking lots and public places.

Still, Homan said immigration agents will continue arresting people they find during operations if they are in the country illegally, even if they lack criminal histories and were not the original targets.

“If they’re in the country illegally, they’re not off the table,” Homan said.

In a recent interview, retired Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino, who led the more sweeping, controversial immigration sweeps in Minneapolis and other major cities, criticized the Trump administration’s “softer approach.” Bovino was relieved of his command following Pretti’s killing and retired from Border Patrol in March.

Homan said he did not agree with Bovino’s characterization of the shift in emphasis, calling it a “smarter approach.”

Bovino also suggested during that recent interview that the Trump administration is backing down from its mass deportation promise. Homan denied that.

“He’s wrong. He’s wrong,” he said. “Numbers prove it. Look at the numbers. Look at the numbers of arrests and removals in the past year, and you give me one year we’ve done more. Never.”

Homan said ICE and CBP have collectively carried out roughly 800,000 deportations since Mr. Trump returned to the White House.

Asked if the American public should expect large-scale, aggressive immigration crackdowns similar to the Minneapolis campaign, Homan said, “No.”

But he said “mass operations” would continue, especially in cities with so-called sanctuary policies that limit local cooperation with ICE.

“We had a historic illegal immigration crisis for four years,” Homan said. “So what’s required now? A historic mass deportation.”

May 5 (Reuters) – Officials at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration blocked the publication of several studies supporting the safety of widely used ‌vaccines against COVID-19 and shingles, a Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson said.

Andrew Nixon, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the FDA, said the studies were pulled over concerns about their conclusions.

“The studies were withdrawn because the authors drew broad conclusions that were not supported by the underlying data. The FDA acted to protect the integrity of its scientific process and ensure that any work associated with the agency meets its high standards,” he said in an email to Reuters.

The withdrawal of these studies is the latest attempt by the health regulator and the administration to limit access to vaccines, reflecting broader policy changes under U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a staunch critic of vaccines.

The Trump administration has sharply ‌reduced funding for vaccine research and raised questions about vaccine safety and effectiveness under the tenure of Kennedy, who has introduced sweeping changes across federal health agencies.

In August last year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said it would wind down nearly $500 million in mRNA vaccine development, cancelling 22 federal projects overseen by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), a government-backed funding body.

Last June, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention panel backed by Kennedy voted to remove mercury-based preservative thimerosal from flu shots, despite long-standing clinical evidence of its safety.

British drugmaker GSK markets Shingrix, a vaccine for shingles, a painful viral infection that causes blisters and rashes, while Pfizer and Moderna are the leading makers of COVID-19 vaccines.

To avoid risk of mines, Navy directs ships on path farther from Iran in Strait of Hormuz

    May 5, 2026 / 6:00 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — The U.S. military is directing commercial ships toward a route in the Strait of Hormuz farther from Iran that the Navy has spent weeks clearing. The U.S. warns that transiting the normal route could be “extremely hazardous” because of mines laid in the strait by Iran.

The notice to mariners posted the same day the U.S. began its latest effort, Project Freedom, to reopen at least part of the Strait of Hormuz. As part of the operation, forces under U.S. Central Command will coordinate with commercial ships to guide them through a cleared path in the strait.

At a briefing Tuesday, the Pentagon displayed a graphic saying Iran had laid new mines in the Strait of Hormuz on April 23. In March, CBS News reported there were about a dozen Iranian mines in the strait. That same month, the Pentagon tasked MQ-9 Reaper drones with conducting mine sweeper support throughout the critical waterway.

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the Defense Department’s arm for collecting and analyzing satellite imagery and geospatial data, has also been tapped for mine hunting duties, according to two U.S. officials who spoke to CBS News on the condition of anonymity to discuss national security issues.

“It is already well reported that Iran has laid mines in the Strait of Hormuz, though not extensively,” Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, told CBS News when asked how many mines are in the strait.

“We’ve been addressing this matter in past weeks, including by clearing an effective pathway ships can use to safely transit. We will continue to take steps to ensure opportunities remain for ships to complete their journeys safely,” Hawkins said in the statement.

When it was reported in March that Iran had laid mines, President Trump denied the U.S. had any knowledge of it, saying, “we have no reports of them doing so.” The Pentagon also said at the time there was “no clear evidence” that mines had been dropped in the strait, but in recent days, the administration has acknowledged the presence of some mines.

“I don’t know if people appreciate how outrageous this is,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday at a White House briefing. “That any country would try to fire at, to sink commercial vessels or put mines in the water — both of these things are illegal.”

On April 24, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Iran that laying any more mines would constitute a violation of the ceasefire.

“If there’s attempts to lay – recklessly and irresponsibly – lay more mines, we’re going to deal with that. It’s a violation of the ceasefire,” Hegseth said.

On Tuesday, when asked about the threat of mines, Hegseth said, “If there are mines identified, it would be something that our — some of our units could undertake or the world could undertake. But right now, we know we have a lane of safe passage that commercial shipping can flow through.”

So far, two U.S. commercial ships have left the Persian Gulf since Project Freedom began. That’s a small fraction of the 1,550 commercial vessels Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine said have been stuck in the Gulf.

Hegseth said “hundreds more ships from nations around the world are lining up to transit,” but neither Hegseth nor Caine set any expectations for how many are expected to cross in the coming days.

They both described Project Freedom as a “defensive operation” that is “temporary in duration,” separate from the bombing campaign, Operation Epic Fury. On Tuesday, Rubio said Epic Fury “is over” and “concluded.”

Iran has said its threat against the strait is a response to the bombing and will continue until the U.S. military ends its blockade on Iranian ports.

Joe Walsh is a senior editor for digital politics at CBS News. Joe previously covered breaking news for Forbes and local news in Boston.

President Trump said Tuesday he has paused Project Freedom — a U.S. effort announced over the weekend to guide commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz — to see if the United States can strike a deal with Iran.

The president announced the about-face in a Truth Social post, writing that the project is on hold “for a short period of time” because the U.S. and Iran have made “Great Progress…toward a Complete and Final Agreement.” He said he made the decision at the request of Pakistan, which has helped mediate negotiations between the United States and Iran.

The U.S.’s blockade of Iranian ports will remain in place, Mr. Trump said.

This is a breaking story; it will be updated.

Ohio Senate race set between Jon Husted, Sherrod Brown after projected primary wins

    May 5, 2026 / 7:51 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Sen. Jon Husted and former Sen. Sherrod Brown will face off in November, after Brown won his primary on Tuesday night, CBS News projects.

Husted was unopposed in Tuesday’s primary.

The projected victories in the Buckeye State tee up what could be among the most expensive Senate races this cycle, as Brown attempts a comeback two years after losing reelection. Now, Democrats see the state as one of a handful of opportunities to flip a seat, with a narrow path to take control of the Senate.

Brown lost his reelection bid to GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno in 2024 after representing Ohio for three terms in the Senate. At the time, Brown lost by less than four percentage points in a state that President Trump won by more than 10. Democrats are hoping that shifting midterm dynamics, along with Brown’s strong name recognition and working-class brand in the state, can tip the scales in their favor.

Husted, who formerly served as Ohio’s lieutenant governor and as secretary of state after a decade in the state legislature, is defending the seat for the first time. He was appointed last year to fill Vice President JD Vance’s seat.

Ohio’s 2024 Senate race was the most expensive of the cycle, and this year’s Senate contest is already shaping up to be costly. Republicans are investing heavily in the race, with the Senate Leadership Fund announcing their largest advertising reservation so far last month at $79 million. The Democratic Senate Majority PAC announced a $40 million investment in ad reservations on Tuesday.

Brown far outpaced Husted in first-quarter fundraising, according to Federal Election Commission filings, with $10.1 million to Husted’s $2.9 million. Heading into the primary, Brown had $17 million in cash on hand, while Husted had $8.1 million.

Despite the fundraising advantage, Democrats still face an uphill battle in Ohio — and in their effort to flip the Senate more broadly. While Republicans are defending more seats in the midterms, many of them are in states that Mr. Trump won by comfortable margins in the last cycle.

Democrats, with a handful of open seats to defend and few opportunities for pickups, must net four seats to take the majority. But their chances have appeared to improve in recent weeks as the unpopular war with Iran and stubborn affordability issues have beleaguered GOP midterm ambitions.

你会看到前所未有的ICE(移民海关执法局)探员数量。”

Defiant border czar brushes away MAGA critics, says ‘mass deportations are coming’

    Phoenix—

White House border czar Tom Homan on Tuesday brushed off critics within President Donald Trump’s base who say the administration is not deporting enough people, while vowing to “flood the zone” with immigration officers in jurisdictions which pass legislation limiting cooperation with federal enforcement.

Speaking at the Border Security Expo in Phoenix, a room filled with Department of Homeland Security officials and industry personnel, a defiant Homan vowed that the “mass deportation promise will happen.”

“For the people out there saying ‘President Trump’s getting weak on mass deportation,’ you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about,” Homan said, referring to such naysayers as “keyboard warriors.”

Homan said he spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin earlier in the morning to discuss what the administration will do “in the next couple of months.”

“You ain’t seen shit yet,” Homan said. “This year will be a good year. Mass deportations are coming.”

Homan’s comments at the Phoenix expo, a typically friendly room where administration officials tend to be slightly more unguarded in their remarks than they are other at other public appearances or during press conferences, come as DHS seeks to take a more targeted and low-key approach with its agenda and operations under Mullin than it had under former Secretary Kristi Noem amid public polling showing Americans souring at the administration’s aggressive crackdown.

Noem’s tenure at DHS saw near daily controversies as immigration officers carried out highly public, and often unfocused, operations in cities like Chicago, Minneapolis and Los Angeles. These operations drew frequent protests from citizens, including two Americans who were shot and killed while opposing the actions of immigration officers who had been deployed in Minneapolis.

Following the second killing of an American citizen, VA nurse Alex Pretti, by immigration officers, Trump deployed Homan to Minneapolis to replace Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol official who had overseen the deployment, and turn down the temperature.

CNN reported in March that the administration has sought other ways to soften the public messaging surrounding its immigration operations. James Blair, the White House deputy chief of staff, told Republicans to focus on the removal of criminals rather than “mass deportations,” a source familiar with the discussion told CNN.

Homan on Tuesday said criminal and public safety threats “have to be the priority.” But he added that the prioritization of criminals does not mean everybody else is “off the table.”

“Why is that?” Homan said. “I don’t care how long you’ve been here, if you’re here illegally, entered this country illegally, you cheated. You cheated the system.”

Conceding that 35% to 40% of the undocumented immigrations who have been arrested during Trump’s second term have no criminal record, Homan said that was necessary to “send a message to the whole world.”

He vowed to send masses of immigration officers to states that enact legislation limiting cooperation between state and local police and federal immigration authorities: “We’re going to flood the zone. You’re going to see more ICE agents [than] you ever seen before.”

When that happens, Homan said, so-called collaterals – people who weren’t targets of immigration officers but happened to be in the area when an operation takes place, are “coming too.”

“You will see collateral arrests increase in these areas,” he said. “You see more agents in your neighborhoods, because you forced us in this position.”

Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York, one of the states that has drawn Trump administration criticism for its immigration policies, reacted sharply Tuesday to Homan’s comments.

“All I’ll say to Mr. Homan is that Donald Trump himself said he would not send a surge of ICE agents to the state of New York unless I ask. I’m not asking,” she said.

Homan vowed to be focused on this mission until his dying breath – regardless of whether he continues to hold a position within the administration, or what is said about him.

“I simply don’t care what people think about me,” Homan said. “I never have and never will.”

Minnesota lawmakers fail at trying to get Omar to testify about alleged fraud, GOP leader talks next steps

    May 5, 2026 6:07pm EDT / Fox News

State Rep Kristin Robbins says the failed subpoena vote will not stop efforts to investigate fraud or Omar’s ties to it

By Alec Schemmel , Andrew Mark Miller Fox News

Minnesota state Rep. Walter Hudson discusses Rep. Ilhan Omar’s deadline to turn over documents to the Minnesota Fraud Committee regarding the ‘Feeding Our Future’ alleged fraud scheme and more on ‘The Will Cain Show.’

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., refused to respond to a request from a Minnesota committee seeking more information on her ties to the massive fraud scandal in the state, prompting a failed subpoena vote on Tuesday, but the committee’s chair says more options exist.

The subpoena, which required a two-thirds committee vote in favor to pass, only got five out of the six votes needed despite the committee’s Republican majority.

“We have reached out to Representative Ilhan Omar on multiple occasions, inviting her to testify and inviting and requesting documents,” State Rep. Kristin Robbins, chair of the House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee, said ahead of the vote. “We have endeavored in multiple ways to get access to [information] because, as everyone knows, Representative Omar had had some role, whether inadvertent or not. She passed the MEALS Act in March of 2020, and that took the guardrails off the federal school nutrition program, which created the conditions for [fraud].”

“I do think the subpoena is important. This is one of dozens, if not hundreds of things we are investigating. We have had hundreds of whistleblower reports. They continue to come in weekly,” Robbins added, noting she will continue to try to reach out to Omar’s office to get cooperation. “Even though the committee will no longer have official hearings we will continue to investigate these whistleblower reports and webs of fraud.”

Fox News Digital touched base with Robbins on Tuesday about possible next steps.

They’re fading,” Robbins said about the committee’s options after a failed subpoena vote. “But I’ll certainly talk to our friends in Congress to see if they would be willing to issue a subpoena. I don’t know if they are, but they would have the same authority and it’s still relevant to them because it’s a federal program that’s been swindled. So I don’t know if they would be willing to do it, but it’s worth asking.”

Robbins added that the federal government has a “whole menu of legal options” given that Omar is a member of Congress.

“They have so many investigations going on, I don’t know where this falls on the priority list,” Robbins said.

OMAR ACCUSED BY GOP OPPONENT OF OPENING UP THE DOOR TO MASSIVE MINNEAPOLIS FRAUD: ‘DEEP, DEEP TIES’

Last month, Robbins says the congresswoman “ghosted” the committee by failing to appear to testify at a hearing focused on the MEALS Act, a federal COVID-19 relief measure passed in 2020 and sponsored by Omar.

“Minnesotans and the Members of the House Fraud Prevention & State Oversight Committee were disappointed that you failed to appear before our committee to answer questions,” Robbins wrote before asking Omar to turn over communications showing how she promoted expanded access to federal child nutrition programs, including emails, texts and meeting records with the Minnesota Department of Education and constituents.

The request also zeroed in on Omar’s public promotion of a Minneapolis restaurant that later became linked to the program. Robbins cited a Somali-language TV appearance in which Omar highlighted Safari Restaurant as a meal distribution site and asked for all communications related to the video and the restaurant’s participation.

Robbins is seeking records of any contact between Omar and a long list of individuals charged or implicated in the Feeding Our Future case, including nonprofit founder Aimee Bock and dozens of alleged co-conspirators.
