Hilton says Spencer Pratt campaign reflects growing revolt against California’s ‘one-party rule’

California Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton says the momentum behind his campaign and Spencer Pratt’s independent bid for Los Angeles mayor shows there’s a hunger among voters in the left-leaning state for outsiders.
Hilton, a conservative commentator and former Fox News Channel host who is backed by President Donald Trump, emphasized in an interview Thursday on “Fox News @Night” that “something’s happening in California. I think people who aren’t here don’t realize how sick we all are of what’s been going on, the one-party rule, for 16 years now,” as he pointed to the Democrats’ longtime control of the state government.
The candidate, one of the frontrunners in the race to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, also spotlighted the campaign of Spencer Pratt, a reality TV star and online influencer-turned-Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose populist pitch to lead the nation’s second-most populous city is gaining traction. Pratt, a Republican, is running as an independent in the Democrat-dominated city.

“The energy behind Spencer here in LA, the energy behind our campaign up and down the state, we’re both outsiders. We’re very different, had different experiences, we were running different campaigns. But the one thing we have in common, we are outsiders. We’ve never run for office before,” Hilton said in an interview just days before California’s June 2 primary elections.
Hilton argued that he and Pratt “are both there to shake up a system that is obviously not working. And that’s why our campaigns are resonating.”
Pratt, who has focused his insurgent campaign against Democratic Mayor Karen Bass, is also backed by Trump. Pratt’s rise is fueled in part by his well-known status as one of the victims who lost their homes in last year’s devastating wildfires, when over 17,000 homes in Los Angeles County were destroyed, as well as his right-leaning focus on homelessness, crime and government accountability in a city long run by Democrats.

Bass is attempting to fend off challenges from the right from Pratt and on the left from progressive City Council member Nithya Raman. If no candidate tops 50% in Tuesday’s nonpartisan mayoral election, the top two finishers will face off in November.
In the governor’s race, the latest public opinion polls indicate Hilton, a former British political advisor and strategist, battling Democrat Xavier Becerra, who served as a Cabinet secretary in former President Biden’s administration, for the top spot in the primary, followed by billionaire hedge fund founder turned environmental activist Tom Steyer, a Democrat who ran for his party’s 2020 presidential nomination.

Federal judge halts work on Trump’s ‘anti-weaponization fund’

A federal judge in Virginia has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from moving ahead with plans to create a nearly $1.8 billion fund to compensate people who it says were wrongly targeted by the government in the past.
The brief order from US District Judge Leonie Brinkema says the administration cannot take any action “pursuant to the creation or operation of the Anti-Weaponization Fund, which includes the transferring of money to the Fund; the consideration of any claims submitted to the Fund; and the disbursing of any funds from the Fund.”
She set a hearing for June 12 to hear arguments over whether she should issue a more lasting pause on the government’s efforts to set up the fund, which is being challenged by a diverse coalition of critics and entities who say they’ve been targeted by the Trump administration and are ineligible to receive money from it.
Brinkema, an appointee of former President Bill Clinton, said she was pausing work on the fund for now to maintain the status quo while she considers the legal challenge. She pointed to the fact that the Justice Department had not committed to holding off on transferring money into it or processing payments while initial court proceedings played out.

Blanche: Jan. 6 rioters’ conduct will be considered for ‘anti-weaponization’ fund payouts

She asked the Justice Department to submit written legal arguments in the case by next Friday.
The case is one of several brought in the last week against the controversial fund, which was unveiled earlier this month after Trump settled an unprecedented lawsuit he had brought against the Internal Revenue Service.
The fund, which will be run by five commissioners selected by the attorney general, will review claims submitted by people who say they were unfairly targeted by previous administrations. The massive pot of money is being drawn from the DOJ’s Judgment Fund, which is taxpayer money set aside by Congress for monetary settlements the government reaches.
Under the terms of the settlement, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche was required to appoint the commissioners within 30 days. He told CNN in an interview last week that “a bunch of people” had applied to sit on the commission. But Brinkema’s order appears to put a hold on his ability to search for those commissioners.
In the case at hand, a group of people and organizations — including a former federal prosecutor, a prominent government watchdog group and the city of New Haven, Connecticut — argue the fund is unconstitutional and violates a series of federal laws.
They specifically challenge the Trump administration’s decision to draw from the Judgment Fund for the new program, arguing it’s unlawful because the underlying legal case was “meritless” given the president’s unique role as both a plaintiff and head of the executive branch, which is where the agencies he sued are housed.
Their lawyers told the judge, whose courthouse is in Alexandria, Virginia, that she needed to step in now because they’re “already being irreparably harmed by the unconstitutional and unlawful creation of the Anti-Weaponization Fund.”

“And that harm will be permanent if the administration takes action, including by irreversibly disbursing funds, before this court can act,” they wrote in court papers filed Thursday.
They pointed to the fact that under the terms of the settlement and Blanche’s order establishing the fund, much of the program is shielded from public view, making it difficult to know how much work has been done on it and whether any funds have gone out the door.
“Today, a federal court recognized the urgent need to prevent taxpayer dollars from being distributed through a secretive and unprecedented political compensation scheme before the legality of that program can be fully reviewed by the court,” said Skye Perryman, the president and CEO of Democracy Forward, a legal advocacy group representing the plaintiffs in the case.
CNN has reached out to the White House and DOJ for comment.

May 29 – Massachusetts sued a UnitedHealth insurance unit on Friday, accusing it of defrauding the state’s Medicaid program out of more than $100 million by making older patients appear more seriously ill than they actually were.
Andrea Joy Campbell, the Massachusetts attorney general, said UnitedHealthcare Insurance, which operates as UnitedHealthcare Community Plans of Massachusetts, falsely manipulated the health status of MassHealth members enrolled in its Senior Care Options plan to secure higher payments.

Campbell accused UnitedHealth of submitting inaccurate diagnoses for patients 65 and older between 2015 and 2025, to receive higher payments from MassHealth and advance the company’s “growth-at-all-costs strategy.”
The lawsuit accuses UnitedHealth of submitting false claims and unjust enrichment. It seeks to recoup money that MassHealth improperly paid, and seeks triple damages.

Bondi defends DOJ’s handling of Epstein files in long-sought interview on Capitol Hill
2026-05-29T14:03:54.261Z / CNN
Former Attorney General Pam Bondi is defending the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files as she appears on Capitol Hill Friday.
Epstein survivors and Democrats have criticized the closed-door format and said they will seek answers about redaction errors that exposed survivor identities.
The Justice Department has not released roughly 2.5 million pages of investigative files on Epstein, and documents that have been published are heavily redacted.
Former Attorney General Pam Bondi offered a robust defense of the Justice Department’s handling of the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files as she arrived on Capitol Hill Friday morning for a long-sought interview with the GOP-led House Oversight Committee.
“To the best of my knowledge, the Department produced everything required under the Epstein Files Transparency Act,” Bondi said in a statement released just ahead of her closed-door interview with the panel. Bondi argued DOJ “demonstrated an unprecedented commitment to transparency” in its release of the case documents in recent months.
Roughly two months after her firing and just days after making public her cancer diagnosis, Bondi is speaking to Hill lawmakers about the department’s handling of the Epstein probe under her watch — a major source of contention inside Donald Trump’s White House during her tenure.
In one key glimpse of her comments to lawmakers, Bondi used her prepared statement to distance herself from at least some of the document release process and noted that she “delegated” some of that work to now-acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
“As the head of a large Department with broad responsibilities, I did not lead every aspect of this effort or conduct that document review myself. I delegated oversight over this process to Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche,” Bondi said.
Rep. James Comer, the chair of the House Oversight Committee, stressed to reporters Friday morning that his committee is “taking this investigation seriously” as it holds the 13th interview in its probe into the late convicted sex offender.
“We want to get the truth to the American people, we wanted to try to provide justice for the survivors,” he told reporters.
But ahead of the sitdown with Bondi, Comer’s Democratic counterpart on the panel, Rep. Robert Garcia, lashed out at Republicans for not requiring the former attorney general to speak on camera or to take a formal oath before speaking to the panel.
While Bondi’s interview will be transcribed and made public, Garcia said it “should have been under oath, and it should be videotaped.”
Just ahead of Bondi’s appearance, a group of Epstein survivors spoke to reporters about the significance of her interview — and what they saw as a clear need for more information.
Marina Lacerda, one of those survivors, said she believes Bondi knows details about the investigation that the public doesn’t. “We all hope that today Pam Bondi will be as clear as possible and hopefully bring accountability to the table,” she said.
Some 2.5 million documents in the Justice Department’s investigative files related to the late convicted sex offender have not been publicly released and many of the 3.5 million pages that have been published are heavily redacted, prompting questions about what’s being kept from the public.
During her time as the top US law enforcement official, Bondi faced criticism from both parties over her lack of transparency on the Epstein investigation.
She’s also faced scrutiny over redaction errors that, in some cases, exposed private personal information about the survivors in the documents.
Another survivor who spoke to reporters Friday, Liz Stein, said she wants Bondi to answer for those redaction errors — and to disclose if anyone has been held accountable for revealing survivor names “while protecting the names of perpetrators.”
“I would certainly hope that as a career attorney and as the former head of the Department of Justice for the United States of America that she will have some kind of moral reckoning with her conscience and remember why she was put in the job she was in, and what her responsibilities in that job are to the American people and not necessarily any particular administration,” Stein said.
In March, the oversight panel, with several GOP lawmakers joining Democrats, voted to subpoena Bondi. Looking to boost members’ confidence in how the investigation was being handled, she then voluntarily appeared for an informal meeting with lawmakers — but Democrats walked out of that meeting because she would not commit to testifying under oath.
Bondi was then set to appear for a sworn deposition in April, but she was fired from her role as attorney general before the scheduled sit-down – prompting the department to argue against her scheduled appearance. Furious Democrats threatened to hold her in contempt of Congress. She is now appearing voluntarily before the committee.
Bondi has been at the center of the Trump administration’s political crisis on Epstein from the start.
Shortly after taking office, Bondi appeared to side with the many MAGA loyalists pursuing full transparency of the government’s handling of the Epstein files. She famously told Fox News that Epstein’s long-rumored client list was “sitting on my desk right now.”
But she later walked back her remarks and her department offered no new details on Epstein, infuriating the MAGA base. That lack of transparency helped fuel a GOP revolt inside Congress, led by Rep. Thomas Massie and former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, which ultimately forced Trump and Republican leaders to fast-track DOJ’s release of a sprawling web of Epstein files.
Still, some Republicans and many Democrats have insisted the DOJ has slow-walked the release — or withheld other details altogether.

Washington — A federal judge temporarily blocked the Justice Department from moving forward with work on the new $1.7+ billion Anti-Weaponization Fund, including making any payouts.
U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema said in a brief order dated Thursday that the temporary hold allows her time to consider whether to grant longer-term relief sought by a group of plaintiffs who are challenging the new fund, which was announced by the Justice Department earlier this month.
Brinkema’s order prevents the Justice Department from “taking any further action pursuant to the creation or operation” of the program “to ensure that no funds are irreversibly disbursed” from it. It covers the transfer of money to the fund, consideration of any claims submitted and disbursement of any payments.
Andrew Floyd, a former federal prosecutor who investigated and prosecuted people involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, and Jonathan Caravello, a California professor who was arrested while protesting an immigration raid, as well as nonprofits, filed their lawsuit last week arguing that the fund is unlawful.
They argued that the fund is a “collusive agreement” between President Trump and his administration that “has no congressional authorization, no basis in law, and no accountability.”
The Anti-Weaponization Fund was created by the Justice Department as part of a settlement of Mr. Trump’s civil lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the leak of his tax returns by a former government contractor.
The Justice Department said the program aims to “provide a systematic process to hear and redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare.” A five-member board would determine payouts from the $1.7 billion pot.
But the Trump administration has come under pressure over the fund, including from Republicans on Capitol Hill, due to concerns that people involved in the Jan. 6 attack would seek and receive payments. Mr. Trump granted clemency to more than 1,500 people who were convicted of crimes stemming from the Capitol assault and has suggested they were treated unfairly.
There have not yet been any official announcements by the Justice Department naming the five commission members who would approve claims and set the criteria for who would be entitled to a cut of the fund.
The lawsuit is one of many filed in recent days to stop the fund’s implementation. Two other law enforcement officers who clashed with rioters on Jan. 6 sued to block the fund, as have government oversight and accountability groups.
Legal experts, however, are skeptical that the lawsuits could obtain permanent relief and dismantle the fund.
