‘Libelous’ NYT report tying Trump family to government-backed deal sparks legal demand

EXCLUSIVE: The Trump Organization is demanding the New York Times retract a story it calls ‘libelous’ and claims was deliberately crafted to suggest financial impropriety by Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, according to a legal letter obtained by Fox News Digital.

The letter stems from a Times story published this week titled “Trump Cut a Billion-Dollar Mining Deal. His Sons Stand to Profit,” which ties the elder Trump brothers and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s sons to a tungsten deal secured by President Donald Trump with Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in September 2025.

“Your June 28 article is deeply misleading and appears deliberately crafted to create the false impression that Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump were involved in, or sought to influence, the decision to award the Kazakhstan tungsten mine project to an affiliate of Cove Capital,” Trump Organization attorney Alan Garten writes in a letter to The Times.

THOMAS, GORSUCH TARGET LANDMARK RULING TRUMP SAYS PROTECTS THE ‘FAKE NEWS’

The letter is addressed to The Times’ editor-in-chief Joseph Kahn, along with the authors of the story, Eric Lipton and Paul Sonne.

“As your own reporting and interviews with those involved all clearly demonstrate, that implication is demonstrably false,” the letter continues.

A spokesperson for The New York Times defended its reporting and addressed the letter by telling Fox News Digital: “The Trump Organization does not deny the main point of our story: That Eric and Donald Jr. have profited from the U.S.-Kazakh tungsten mining agreement.”

“The letter mainly disputes whether the article gave enough prominence to the fact that the brothers were indirect and passive investors — a point that is clearly set out in the story,” NYT’s Executive Director of Media Relations Charlie Stadtlander added in the statement.

Tungsten is a mineral used by the United States to develop military equipment, including missiles and fighter jets. Currently, China, Russia and North Korea have a stranglehold on the resource, and the Trump administration has made it a strategic priority to secure a pipeline to obtain the mineral.

DOUG BURGUM SAYS TRUMP ENTERS CHINA SUMMIT IN ‘STRONGEST POSITION’ OF ANY US LEADER EVER

Kazakhstan is rich in tungsten, and from the outset of his second term in office, Trump sought to make a deal with the Central Asian country to tap into its tungsten supply — even as his own tariff policies have caused price surges and bottlenecks for the import of this metal.

That makings of a deal culminated in a September 2025 meeting at the St. Regis Hotel in New York, where Lutnick hosted Tokayev. Trump joined by phone, and the parties came to a verbal agreement for the United States to procure tungsten, according to The Times. The letters of interest from U.S. government financing agencies was officially inked in November.

The Times’ report stems from the Trump brothers’ relationship to an investment firm called Dominari Securities. The brothers invest in some deals made by Dominari and they have a minority share in its parent company, Dominari Holdings Inc.

ISRAELI PM NETANYAHU INITIATING DEFAMATION LAWSUIT AGAINST NEW YORK TIMES OVER CONTROVERSIAL ‘DOG RAPE’ STORY

A source familiar with the matter explained the details of how the Trump brothers became passive investors in the tungsten mining operation.

An investment fund by Dominari Securities invested in a publicly traded construction company called Skyline Builders in August 2025.

After the verbal September 2025 agreement, Skyline approached Cove Capital, the company that invested in the tungsten mining project, and solicited a merger that would allow Cove Capital affiliate Cove Kaz to go public, the source detailed. The project has been backed by letters of interest from U.S. government financing agencies totaling up to $1.6 billion.

At no point, the source reiterated, did the brothers have any influence over the decision to award the mining contract to Kaz Resources.

This is echoed in the letter to the Times, where it states: “Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump had absolutely no involvement in the award of the Kazakhstan project.”

Furthermore, Cove Capital was not introduced to Skyline Builders until about one month after the September 2025 verbal agreement, according to the legal letter and third-party communications obtained by Fox News Digital.

Those communications also reveal that Cove Capital leadership never spoke to either of the Trump brothers about the financing support before it was executed.

USHA VANCE MOCKS NEW YORK TIMES FOR DRAWING ‘POLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE’ FROM HER PREGNANCY FASHION

“Don and Eric exercise no control over either company, played no role in and no knowledge of Cove Capital’s pursuit of the Kazakhstan project, participated in no negotiations relating to the project, and never even discussed the Kazakhstan project with anyone at Skyline, Cove Capital or any of their respective affiliates,” the Trump Organization letter to The Times says.

“Their connection to Cove Capital is therefore remote, indirect and highly attenuated.”

The letter accuses The Times of intentionally misleading readers before it revealed the tenuous relationship between the brothers and the tungsten mining project.

“Indeed, in a message to my clients sent prior to publication of the story, your team expressly acknowledged that Don and Eric were not ‘actively a part of this deal,’” the letter says.

“Based upon the foregoing, we demand that The New York Times promptly retract or prominently correct the false and misleading impression created by the article and ensure that any future reporting accurately reflects the undisputed facts, including that Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump had no operational role in any of the entities involved, no involvement whatsoever in the Kazakhstan project or its negotiations, and, as a matter of indisputable chronology, could not have influenced the award of the project.”

The letter ends by expressly reserving all rights and remedies to solve the problem, including potential legal action.

The Trump Organization sounded off on The New York Times in a statement to Fox News Digital, calling the insinuation that the Trump brothers had involvement in the tungsten deal to Cove Capital “categorically false, misleading and libelous.”

The statement addresses the timeline of events and reiterates that the Trump brothers had no control over Cove Capital, its affiliates or Skyline Builders.

“Of course, all of these facts are readily ascertainable and could have easily been verified had anyone from the New York Times or any other publication that republished this supposed story performed even the slightest amount of due diligence before proceeding with such reckless and unfounded assertions,” the statement said.

The White House also weighed in.

“The only special interest guiding the Trump administration’s decision-making is the best interest of the American people,” said White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “Securing and reshoring America’s critical supply chains has been a top priority for President Trump, and Secretary Lutnick along with the rest of the Administration continue to take historic action to safeguard America’s national and economic security.”

The Commerce Department did not return a request for comment on the deal or allegations that Lutnick’s two sons improperly benefited from the agreement.

    image

    Indr Labs

What a Brooklyn bodega reveals about the craze for an experimental weight-loss drug

    2026-07-02T10:00:00-0400 / CBS News

    By Jamie Korenblat

    Updated on: July 2, 2026 / 10:35 AM EDT / CBS News

Behind the counter of a bodega in Brooklyn, a cashier casually rang up a tiny vial of a peptide the store advertised as retatrutide — an experimental weight-loss drug whose sale is generally prohibited by federal law.

“PEPTIDES SOLD HERE” reads a large sign displayed on the storefront of Mr. Green, a small shop on a busy stretch of Bedford Avenue sandwiched between a poke restaurant and a funeral home. The poster promotes retatrutide for “weight management,” though it also says in small type that the peptides on offer are “not for human consumption” — a disclaimer that doesn’t appear to be hurting business.

An employee manning the counter on Tuesday afternoon initially wasn’t sure if he had any retatrutide left.

“This sh** has been selling,” the employee said, before locating a vial and selling it to a CBS News reporter for $95. No age verification, no medical questionnaire, no prescription needed.

The sale of what is billed as retatrutide in multiple New York bodegas shows how the craze for an experimental drug — which has not been approved as safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration — has migrated from shadowy online vendors into brick-and-mortar retail settings where it is sold alongside sodas and snack food.

At the Mr. Green convenience store in Brooklyn, a sign in the window, seen in the closeup on the right, advertises peptides from Indr Labs, including retatrutide, an experimental weight-loss drug that has not been approved by the FDA. CBS News

Last month, CBS News documented how, without regulatory approval, retatrutide has gone viral online and was being widely prescribed by licensed medical professionals. But the brazen advertising and sale of an unproven, research-grade version of retatrutide — over the counter — shocked some medical experts.

“I was surprised that there would be a company so openly selling a product that’s not approved by the FDA,” said Jonathan Darrow, an expert in drug regulation who previously taught at Harvard Medical School. “What argument could they possibly be putting forth to justify this?”

The vial purchased by CBS News bears the label of a peptide vendor called Indr Labs. A QR code links to the company’s website, which says its products are “for research use only” — language that doesn’t appear on the vial itself. Federal law allows experimental drugs to be used in clinical trials or animal research in limited circumstances, but it prohibits their commercial sale to the public.

On its site, Indr Labs promotes various peptides, claiming that they are tested by a third-party lab for their makeup and purity. Known as certificates of analysis, these lab reports are widely relied on by people who purchase unregulated, research-grade products. But in Indr Labs’ case, there are irregularities.

For instance, the certificate for retatrutide shows a graph that appears to identify the sample as a different weight-loss drug, tirzepatide.

In addition, the report indicates the analysis was performed by Vanguard Laboratory. But Tori Johnson, the lab’s operations manager, said it is fake — along with the lab reports for other peptides on Indr Labs’ website that claim to be by Vanguard, she said.

“We did not issue these certificates, we do not have a client called INDR Labs,” Johnson said by email.

Indr Labs did not respond to emailed questions. It subsequently changed its website to require a password to access the lab reports.

Efforts to reach the owner of Mr. Green were unsuccessful. The FDA didn’t respond to a request for comment, but it has warned consumers against buying retatrutide that is labeled for research use, saying such products “are of unknown quality and may be harmful to their health.”

A spokesperson for Eli Lilly, which is developing retatrutide to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes, called on regulators and law enforcement to “help dismantle the illicit networks selling these black-market drugs.”

In clinical trials, retatrutide has shown that it could be more effective than the most potent weight-loss drugs that have been approved by the FDA. That has ignited buzz on social media and kindled a vast market for the drug well before Eli Lilly even seeks approval from the FDA.

The agency, whose job is to determine whether a drug is safe and effective, has so far struggled to crack down on the sale of retatrutide. When it has taken enforcement action, the agency has singled out companies that claim retatrutide is for research but advertise its purported health benefits.

Indr Labs’ website says its peptides have at least “98% purity” and promotes “discreet packaging,” but it steers clear of medical claims and requires online purchasers to acknowledge it is only for research use. The advertisement in Mr. Green’s storefront, however, lists human-sounding benefits such as “cardiometabolic health” and “weight management” for retatrutide.

    And it is not unique.

Barely two blocks away, Classy Bite Deli 2 had the same Indr Labs poster on its window and also offered retatrutide for sale. Efforts to reach its owner were unsuccessful.

Jeff Cohen, a lawyer and co-founder of the American Peptide Association, said advertising research-grade retatrutide in a retail store was “incredibly aggressive.”

“It’s probably the most aggressive form of product placement” he’s seen for retatrutide, Cohen said. Selling research-use peptides is like driving on an interstate, he added: “Every interstate has a speed limit, but nobody abides by it,” he said. “People who get pulled over are the outliers from the pack.”

While many individuals and some medical professionals say they’ve seen great results from retatrutide, there are also reports of concerning side effects. America’s Poison Centers has tracked a sharp rise in reports of toxicities attributed to the drug, and more claims of adverse events — though unverified — are arriving at the FDA.

On the same day last month that CBS News ran an investigation on the widespread availability of retatrutide, a 72-year-old woman contacted the FDA to report “sever [sic] skin irritation and still seeing doctors” after being prescribed the drug. The woman added, “learned today on CBS news that it is not FDA approved.”

Catholic Church says 6 bishops from ultra-conservative SSPX society excommunicated as decades-old feud reopens

    Updated on: July 2, 2026 / 9:26 AM EDT / CBS News

Rome— The Vatican announced Thursday that six bishops associated with the ultra-conservative Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) have been excommunicated following the unauthorized consecration of four new bishops the previous day in Écône, Switzerland.

The consecrations were carried out without the approval of Pope Leo XIV. Under Catholic canon law, only the pope can authorize the consecration of new bishops.

The Vatican said the two consecrating bishops and the four newly ordained bishops — including one American — had incurred “latae sententiae” (automatic) excommunication. The Church further declared that the consecrations constituted a “schismatic act,” representing a formal break in ecclesial communion.

Pope Leo XIV had appealed to SSPX to not to ordain the new bishops, and as the society went ahead with its plans, all four of the newly consecrated bishops and the two who carried out the consecration were excommunicated, the Vatican said. Excommunication is one of the most serious penalties that can be imposed by the Catholic Church’s leadership. It bars a Catholic from receiving any church sacraments such as baptism, communion or marriage.

Going even further, the Vatican warned members of the SSPX that those who knowingly and formally align themselves with the society place themselves outside full communion with the Church.

The Holy See also revoked the faculties previously granted to SSPX priests to validly celebrate the sacraments of confession and marriage, meaning those sacraments are no longer recognized as valid when administered by SSPX clergy.

On the eve of the consecrations, Pope Leo made a final appeal for unity, writing personally to the Society’s Superior General.

“I plead with you and ask you with all my heart: please turn back!” wrote Leo, the first-ever U.S.-born pontiff.

The SSPX was founded in the 1970s by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in response to the liturgical and theological reforms that followed the Second Vatican Council. The society sought to preserve the Traditional Latin Mass and what it regards as the historic teachings of the Catholic Church.

Although initially established with Vatican approval, relations with Rome steadily deteriorated as the SSPX rejected key aspects of the Council, particularly its teachings on religious liberty, interdenominational unity and episcopal collegiality – or the principle that bishops collectively share responsibility for Church governance.

The current schism echoes events from nearly four decades ago, when, in 1988, Archbishop Lefebvre consecrated four bishops without papal approval, resulting in automatic excommunication.

Pope Benedict XVI lifted the personal excommunications of the surviving bishops in 2009 as part of an effort to foster reconciliation, but the society’s canonical status remained unresolved.

Over the past five decades, the SSPX has grown into a global movement with an estimated 600,000 adherents. It operates seminaries, schools, retreat centers and hundreds of chapels worldwide.

In the United States, SSPX is headquartered in Kansas and it operates the St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Dillwyn, Virginia, serving a network of chapels and schools across the country.

The society says it has 25,000 adherents in the U.S.

An estimated 15,000 people gathered Wednesday in Écône to witness the episcopal consecrations.

While expressing sorrow over the rupture, the Holy See said it continues to pray that members of the SSPX will one day be restored to full communion with the Catholic Church.

(CBS News)

How Taylor Swift could transform Madison Square Garden into a perfect wedding venue, according to elite planners

    July 2, 2026 / 11:10 AM EDT / CBS News

    Kerry Breen News Editor

Turning a basketball arena into a wedding venue fit for a superstar might sound intimidating. But for celebrity event planners and designers, it’s just another day.

Rumors have been swirling about Taylor Swift’s impending nuptials to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Law enforcement sources told CBS News the pair plan to tie the knot at Madison Square Garden, the iconic concert venue and basketball arena in the heart of New York City.

While the venue may seem like an odd choice to some, two celebrity event planners explained to CBS News how it could become unrecognizable by the time guests arrive — and the unique aspects the arena offers.

    “Making the impossible request happen”

When it comes to planning for celebrities and high-net-worth clients, it’s more like producing a “blockbuster movie” than hosting a wedding, said Larry Walshe, a London-based event designer who regularly works on weddings that cost between $5 to $10 million.

There may be hundreds of people involved in such a project, said Walshe, who recently worked on a wedding team that employed 800. Often, the “small village” of staffers will be under a non-disclosure agreement to prevent leaks, Walshe said.

Uniqueness and exclusivity are often the name of the game, he said, with celebrities regularly “trying to push that creative envelope.”

Sometimes, clients want their wedding to be somewhere fantastical, like the wilds of Iceland or the remote deserts of Saudi Arabia. In places where the wedding industry is non-existent and guest infrastructure slim, prep work can include building a temporary village for the hundreds of staff involved in the event. The team may need to import everything, down to the silverware, Walshe said.

“Part of my job is to be creative, like design and art direction, (but) so much of my job is logistics and engineering,” said Walshe, who has planned multi-day extravaganzas that cross countries. “It’s trying to find a way to make the impossible request happen. How do you make flowers look like they’re levitating, but don’t look like they’re standing up on something? How do you engineer something like that, that also isn’t going to fall over and kill someone?”

Walshe said that compared to some of the weddings he has choreographed, Madison Square Garden is straightforward — and even offers some unusual perks.

“The thing that’s quite nice about it is that it’s got a lot of rigging already in there! It’s got some really great lighting and technical things already there. There’s a lot of infrastructure that you could make work,” Walshe said, adding that clients often do the opposite, choosing a site that is beautiful but has no infrastructure. “It’s usually one or the other. The challenge is, how do you make those two things meet in the middle as harmoniously as possible?”

A “completely transformed” Madison Square Garden

While no one knows how Swift and Kelce’s nuptials will look, Preston Bailey, an event designer who was part of the team that created a multi-day extravaganza for the son of India’s wealthiest family in 2024, said Madison Square Garden will likely be unrecognizable.

Walshe said it might take a lot of time to make the space feel “personal, romantic and residential,” but the sky is the limit for the superstar couple. Bailey said designers could “create a space within a space that would virtually eliminate” the bleachers that surround the arena floor. The team could also “create different areas” for the ceremony, cocktail hour, reception and other events, he said. That blank-slate element of the arena helps make it the “perfect location,” Bailey said.

“If they want, they could make each section look completely different,” Bailey said. “Both of them are professionals that normally work in stadiums, so I think Madison Square Garden could not be a better option.”

People Magazine editor-in-chief Charlotte Triggs told “CBS Mornings” that Swift’s familiarity with the venue makes it an appealing option.

“I think for most people, this seems like the weirdest choice in the world, but for her, this is spot-on. It has total security. Also keep in mind, she’s very familiar with it. She performed there multiple times,” Triggs said.

Triggs highlighted reports that designers are installing a castle inside the venue, and noted that Swift has previously turned venues into intimate spaces for some past tours. Load-ins have been ongoing all week, she said. Large trucks have been seen parked outside the venue in recent days, with work crews unloading stage equipment, lights and other gear, much of it under wraps. Some of it was labeled “Garden Party” or “GP.”

“This is going to be an absolute, spectacular blowout,” Triggs said. “According to a source, it doesn’t look at all the same inside. They’ve completely transformed it.”

What do we know about Taylor Swift’s wedding?

Walshe said that jugging the wedding and the expected security will be like “running a military operation,” though he noted any planner used to organizing this type of event would be capable of handling it. Swift and Kelce have hired private security, and the New York City Police Department is expected to help handle the expected traffic, security, media, fans and paparazzi. Even reported street closures wouldn’t be difficult for a planner accustomed to these kind of events, Walshe said.

The wedding events are reported to begin on Thursday, with a rehearsal dinner at the Infosys Theater at the Garden, law enforcement sources told CBS News. That will be for about 100 people, according to the sources.

The party really starts on Friday, the sources said, with a wedding celebration for about 1,000 people planned to begin that evening and stretch into the early hours of Saturday morning. The doors of the arena are set to open around 3:30 p.m., the sources said, with guests entering through a covered VIP area. They will be treated to cocktails on the arena’s 6th floor concourse before the 5:30 p.m. ceremony, according to the law enforcement sources, who noted that the exact times are subject to change.

The reception is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. and last until 2 a.m., the sources said. The event will feature musical performances, they said.

A Republican lawmaker was booted from Pennsylvania’s Democrat-controlled State House chamber over his choice of patriotic attire celebrating the U.S. founding 250 years ago this week in the commonwealth.

The dispute comes as Americans prepare to celebrate the nation’s semiquincentennial and as the Trump administration showcases the Great American State Fair while the Shapiro administration features America250PA concerts and fairs from Pittsburgh to Wilkes-Barre.

America’s most prominent swing state has long enjoyed closely-divided government, with Gov. Josh Shapiro controlling the executive, Democrats holding a one-seat House majority and Republicans holding a four-seat Senate majority – which has led to dustups like that involving state Rep. Eric Davanzo this week.

Davanzo, who represents a swath of Westmoreland County between Pittsburgh and Greensburg, said he was shocked by the reaction of House Speaker Joanna McClinton, D-Southwest Philadelphia, when he came to Tuesday’s session sporting a red, white and blue suit and tie.

Davanzo told Fox News Digital he walked around the chamber greeting colleagues and eventually stopped to chat with House Minority Whip Timothy O’Neal, R-Washington.

“We were talking, I turned around when a House photographer got a picture… and the next thing I know Whip O’Neal is gone.”

Davanzo said some Democratic lawmakers came up to him afterward in the Capitol and said they did not agree with his ejection.(Pennslyvania House Republicans)

“He comes back a few minutes later and he says, ‘hey, you’re not going to like this,’” Davanzo said, going on to recount that McClinton informed minority leadership that his attire was inappropriate.

“I’m like, ‘what? You’ve got to be kidding,’” Davanzo said, before learning McClinton wanted him off the House floor.

Davanzo initially decided to stay on the floor despite Democratic leaders’ wishes until a House security guard informed him McClinton was demanding he either remove his suit jacket or leave.

“Instead of taking my jacket off, I walked off the House Floor,” he said.

Davanzo said that while it was clear McClinton objected to his America 250-themed suit, some Democratic lawmakers came up to him afterward in the Capitol and said they did not agree with his ejection.

One Philadelphia Democrat, Rep. Jordan Davis of Gray’s Ferry, had remarked to Davanzo the suit was “a very colorful jacket the representative is wearing today. Very patriotic, I see, my friend.”

Davanzo said House leadership had previously endorsed thematic attire in the chamber.

“They were asked to dress in pride colors because they were going to do a House photo on the floor,” Davanzo told Fox News Digital, noting June is Pride Month. “That’s OK. We can take our photos for pride but we can’t show up as a patriot and take a photo or even get on the House floor apparently,” Davanzo said. He then read from a statement from McClinton about Pride Month and how it encourages people to be “authentic” and “love freely.”

“You’re only able to love freely because the brave men and women died for this flag,” Davanzo said.

“They died for our country. This is complete hypocrisy. You’re allowed to wear tennis shoes on the floor. You’re allow to wear top hats. You can wear camo-jackets. Everything across the board, but don’t show up with a patriotic outfit on because you’re going to be asked to leave.”

He noted that the Declaration of Independence was signed 250 years ago Saturday about 250 miles east of his district in Philadelphia and that he is also a “Bicentennial Baby,” born in 1976 and celebrating his 50th birthday this year.

Davanzo also leads the America First Caucus in the State House, which he said focuses on efforts like onshoring manufacturing in the increasingly postindustrial Keystone State and providing for an “automatic death penalty” for illegal immigrants convicted of murdering Pennsylvanians.

“I introduced bills that we would give $250 checks out to every family household in Pennsylvania so that we can celebrate America 250. This is what I stand for, this is what believe in. I’m just representing my folks back home of who I am,” he said.

“This is a big celebration coming up. I want to be patriotic, why not? What is so wrong with what I have on?” said Davanzo, who wore the very same suit during his interview.

Fox News Digital reached out to McClinton for comment.
