Trump to kick off Great American State Fair after several musicians cancel

President Trump will kick off the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C, after several of the musical guests this week pulled out of the event, which has been described as a birthday bash to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

Freedom 250, the organization behind the event, said Saturday that Mr. Trump will kick off the event on June 24 in an opening ceremony.

“As the visionary behind the Great American State Fair, we are excited to announce that President Trump will personally kick off this historic celebration on Wednesday, June 24 in an opening ceremony celebrating America’s 250th birthday,” said Danielle Alvarez, a spokesperson for Freedom 250.

Mr. Trump said in a social media post earlier Saturday indicated he would look into holding an “America is Back” rally at the state fair where he would “give a major speech, rallying the Country forward.”

“I understand Artists are getting ‘the yips’ having to do with their performance … so I am thinking about bringing the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World, the man who gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime, and he does so without a guitar, the man who loves our Country more than anyone else, and the man who some say is the Greatest President in History (THE GOAT!), DONALD J. TRUMP, to take the place of these highly paid, Third Rate ‘Artists,’ and give a major speech, rallying the Country forward like I have done ever since being President!” Mr. Trump wrote in the post.

Freedom 250 announced a slate of artists last week to perform at a series of concerts on the National Mall from June 24 to July 10. But shortly after its announcement, many of the artists canceled, citing concerns that the event would be too political in nature.

Morris Day and the Time, Young MC, the Commodores, Martina McBride and Bret Michaels have all announced they would not be participating.

Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli, Vanilla Ice, C+C Music Factory rapper Freedom Williams and Flo Rida are still scheduled to perform.

Freedom 250 has said the initiative is nonpartisan and should be treated as such.

Communist revolution chants, socialist organizations and anti-ICE activism were on display outside Delaney Hall, Saturday, as demonstrators protested immigration detention policies.

NEWARK, N.J. — The continued unrest outside Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, took on a distinctly ideological tone during ICE demonstrations Saturday, as far-left communist-socialist activists and a far-right group clashed, transforming a protest over the center’s conditions into a broader political spectacle.

The standoff began more than a week ago, when illegal immigrant detainees penned an open letter alleging physical and psychological torture, claiming they were being denied medical care and adequate food.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) quickly denied the allegations, releasing facility menus to prove detainees are provided three daily meals with options like chicken fajitas and Salisbury steak.

NEW JERSEY AGITATORS BITE, KICK AND PUNCH ICE AGENTS AS DELANEY HALL CLASHES CONTINUE; 9 MORE ARRESTED: DHS

After violent skirmishes earlier in the week, where federal agents were assaulted by agitators, Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill ordered the New Jersey State Police to take over security, claiming the move was necessary to protect the demonstrators from an “ICE surge.”

By Saturday morning, the immigrant detention center had been transformed into a fortified zone surrounded by large orange plastic barricades and metal fencing.

State officials admitted the chaos is being driven by outside instigators rather than local residents, with state Attorney General Jennifer Davenport confirming five of the six people arrested by state police this week were not from New Jersey.

A crowd of roughly 200 anti-ICE demonstrators, heavily intertwined with far-left and socialist organizations, dominated the scene Saturday, chanting, “Stop ICE Gestapo! Communist revolution!” while distributing radical literature reading “LONG LIVE COMMUNISM!” and “NO PAPERS, NO BORDERS, NO BOSSES.”

ICE supporters, including members of the far-right Proud Boys, also made an appearance at the protest Saturday carrying pro-ICE flags, food and cases of water for law enforcement.

Their arrival sent a shockwave through the heavily outnumbering anti-ICE crowd, with far-left agitators immediately rushing toward the barriers, screaming profanities and shifting their chants to “Proud Boys go home.”

During a news conference Saturday afternoon, Sherrill claimed ICE engagement “creates an incredibly dangerous situation” adding she refuses to “back down in fighting the Trump administration and the threats they’ve made.”

Sherrill acknowledged that “national extremist groups” have infiltrated the protests to create chaos, warning out-of-state actors that they are endangering the public and not helping the detainees.

“You’re not helping detainee families, and you’re certainly not keeping new Jersey safe today,” the governor said. “Going forward, I urge those protesting outside of Delaney Hall to bring the temperature down so we can focus on the detainees and their families. Comply with the lawful orders from local and state law enforcement and let advocates, faith leaders and members of this community continue their work here in America.”

Rep. Seth Moulton to take on Sen. Ed Markey in Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary

    May 30, 2026 / 5:51 PM EDT / AP

U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, a moderate Massachusetts Democrat, secured enough delegate support Saturday to appear on the state’s primary ballot as he challenges incumbent Sen. Ed Markey in this year’s Senate race.

Yet even though Moulton cleared a key hurdle to continue his Senate bid, it was Markey who won the party’s endorsement after winning more than 50% of the delegation’s support.

“You have a choice, you have to decide what the future looks like and what you’re going to demand,” Markey said Saturday in front of more than 4,000 delegates.

The Massachusetts primary is Sept. 1.

Markey won nearly 73% of the delegates’ support, while Moulton won nearly 27% of the vote. Massachusetts Democratic Party rules require statewide candidates to get at least 15% of delegate support to appear on primary ballots.

In heavily Democratic Massachusetts, the Senate primary contest is one of the most closely watched in the country as Moulton, 47, has centered his campaign on changing the status quo and demanding a generational shift in leadership.

If reelected, Markey would be 80 before his third six-year term would begin. While Markey has touted his stamina and embrace of progressive policies, questions about age have continued to swirl around Democratic candidates as they fight to take back control of Congress.

In his nomination speech, Moulton argued that the Democratic Party needed more than “incremental change” and needed to start anew.

“It’s time for the generation that grew up with the internet, and will have to live for decades with AI, to lead our way through it,” Moulton said.

Moulton only addressed his opponent briefly during his nomination speech, giving a passing nod on not waiting another six years for generational change and later calling on Markey to participate in multiple debates before the September primary. Currently, the two candidates have agreed to participate in one debate later this summer.

Markey, instead, took a more critical approach by attacking Moulton’s previous comments about transgender kids and accepting corporate PAC money.

“Massachusetts deserves better than a senator who scapegoats trans kids,” Markey said to loud cheers.

In 2024, Moulton caught flak from some members of his party for saying he didn’t want his daughters playing in sports against transgender girls. Critics said Moulton echoed President Trump’s talking points against allowing transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports.

Moulton has since said his intent with that statement “was to point out that, as a party, we need to be willing to have difficult conversations.”

Moulton, who enlisted in the Marines after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and served four tours of duty in Iraq, was first elected to the House in 2014. He briefly launched a 2020 presidential campaign, but he dropped that bid after a few months.

Markey served as a Massachusetts congressman for nearly 40 years before winning the Senate seat in 2013. He fended off a challenge in 2020 from Rep. Joe Kennedy III in the Senate primary by turning to his progressive allies to overcome a challenge from a younger rival from America’s most famous political family.

Manhunt underway for suspect in Virginia accused of killing sheriff’s deputy

    May 30, 2026 / 2:33 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A manhunt is underway in Virginia for a suspect accused of killing a sheriff’s deputy while he was conducting a welfare check, law enforcement officials said.

Deputy Logan Utt was fatally shot after police received a request from a family member to do a welfare check at the location, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said.

A man at the home opened fire on the two deputies who responded to the location, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputies returned fire, the sheriff’s office said, and both were hit by gunfire. Utt was pronounced dead, while the second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest. That deputy is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition, officials said.

“Deputy Utt was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished family member, friend, and respected member of our law enforcement family. His service, courage, and dedication will not be forgotten,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Utt joined the sheriff’s office in 2023, after serving in the military.

A search is underway for the suspect. He should be considered armed and extremely dangerous, law enforcement officials said.

“My office is closely monitoring this tragic incident,” Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger wrote on social media. “I encourage anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Virginia State Police. My thoughts are with the deputy’s family and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as we work through this awful situation.”

WHO chief visits Ebola outbreak epicenter in eastern Congo as cases outpace response

    May 30, 2026 12:24 PM EDT / CBS/AP

The head of the World Health Organization on Saturday visited eastern Congo’s Bunia, a city at the heart of an outbreak of a rare type of Ebola, where the virus is spreading faster than the response despite better-organized health facilities and new aid arrivals.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is expected to visit a treatment center and meet local authorities, health workers and affected families in Bunia.

“The best way to address this is to provide all the necessary support to fight the disease at its epicenter and to continue offering every assistance needed,” the WHO’s director-general told reporters late Friday.

The health organization said latest official figures showed 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths. The number could be three to four times higher than what is being reported, “CBS Saturday Morning” reported.

Neighboring Uganda has confirmed nine cases and one death, the Ugandan ministry of health said Friday.

Current Ebola strain has no approved treatment or vaccine

The Bundibugyo virus, the current kind of Ebola, has no approved treatment or vaccine.

“This is a difficult situation, and we recognize that. But the Democratic Republic of Congo has faced the Ebola virus many times before. We are confident that it can once again bring this outbreak under control,” Tedros said after meeting with Congo’s Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka on Friday.

Last week, the WHO upgraded its risk assessment to “very high” at the national level. Tedros said the outbreak is “spreading rapidly.”

Medical aid donated by the European Union arrived in Ituri, the heart of Congo’s Ebola outbreak, on Thursday. More shipments are expected in the coming days. The U.S. announced $80 million in additional aid on the same day, bringing its total commitment to more than $112 million.

Response efforts don’t match pace of outbreak

Response efforts at Bunia’s Rwampara and General hospitals appear more organized, with additional staff, protective gear and medical supplies, though patients continue arriving around the clock, a reporter from The Associated Press observed on Friday.

The response has not kept pace with one of the fastest-spreading outbreaks on record, Doctors Without Borders, or MSF, warned on Saturday.

“Never before has an Ebola outbreak recorded so many cases so soon after its declaration,” Dr. Alan Gonzalez, MSF’s deputy director of operations, said in a statement. “Nobody knows the true scale and severity of this outbreak.”

Gonzalez called for an immediate expansion of testing, faster deployment of aid workers and sustained access for medical supplies.

The dangers faced by health workers have been heightened by anger among residents over the stringent medical protocols for handling the victims’ bodies, which clash with local burial rites. Residents have launched at least three attacks against health centers.

Attacks in Ituri by the Allied Democratic Forces, a rebel group allied with the Islamic State group, and a coalition of ethnic militias have also hindered the response.

The illness also has been reported in the Congolese provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, south of Ituri, where the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group controls many key cities, including Goma and Bukavu. The rebels have reported two cases.

Border closures “not effective” in preventing spread, WHO says

Uganda and Rwanda have closed their borders with Congo. Border closures and travel bans are “not effective at all” in preventing the spread of the outbreak, Tedros said on Friday.

“Closing borders, as some countries have done, only discourages transparency. The Democratic Republic of Congo is reporting the situation openly and transparently,” he said, urging countries to reconsider these measures.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio Wednesday that no Ebola patients will be allowed into the U.S., and banned entry for non-U.S. passport holders who had recently visited Congo, Uganda or South Sudan.

Airports in the United States, including JFK in New York, Washington-Dulles International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport are conducting enhanced health screenings. CDC officials will evaluate travelers showing symptoms and they could be transported to a hospital for further treatment.

On Friday, a Kenyan High Court judge temporarily blocked a Trump administration attempt to set up an Ebola quarantine facility on an air base in the East African country.

    2026-05-30T19:34:56.428Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/05/30/politics/trump-green-card-messaging

‘It’s really scary’: Trump administration green card messaging prompts confusion and anxiety

    2026-05-30T19:34:56.428Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/05/30/politics/trump-green-card-messaging

    • A Trump administration directive threatened to require most green card applicants to wait out the process in their home countries.
    • The confusing messaging has created anxiety for millions of immigrants with pending applications.
    • Immigration attorneys say the policy change represents another effort to curtail legal immigration and could trigger significant brain drain.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

Francisco and Julia’s world together began at the end of the Earth.

The couple, both research scientists, first met while working in Antarctica in January 2024. Their relationship quickly progressed as each took turns visiting each other’s homes — his in Chile, and hers in the US. Last summer, after Francisco met Julia’s family, they began planning seriously for the future.

“We decided we want to spend the rest of our lives together,” Francisco said.

The couple, who spoke with CNN on the condition that only their first names be published, got married last year, and Francisco applied for a green card that would allow him to permanently live and work in the country. They met with several lawyers who said Francisco would be able to apply to change his immigration status while living with Julia in the US rather than returning to his home in Chile.

But the Trump administration’s recent whiplash messaging on its green card policy threatened to interrupt their burgeoning lives — both as a couple and now as a family. Julia is expecting twins later this year.

A directive announced last week threatened to require most applicants for permanent residency to wait out the process in their home country. But barely a week after it was announced, the Department of Homeland Security sought to backpedal, claiming it was simply a reminder that US Citizenship and Immigration Services officers had discretion on the decisions they made on individual cases.

At its most minimal interpretation, the change simply gives individual adjudicators more discretion to determine whether immigrants requesting an adjustment to their status can stay in the United States while that process plays out. At its maximum interpretation, it could have required most people with pending applications, like Francisco, to suddenly leave the US — and their families and lives behind.

“This change in policy puts us in a situation where we made a family decision based on a certain policy expectation, and now that’s been changed retroactively,” Julia said. “We’re looking at the possibility of, if that applied to our case, that I would be alone with two newborns in a full-time job.”

“It’s really scary to think about being separated when the kids are little,” she added. Julia and Francisco spoke with CNN before DHS sought to roll back the most expansive interpretation of the policy directive.

In public statements announcing the policy, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, the government agency that is in charge of the country’s legal immigration system, said the change allows the US immigration system to be “fairer and more efficient” while eliminating loopholes that could allow immigrants to “slip into the shadows” and live illegally in the US if their residency application is denied.

The initial public announcement of the policy appeared to take a more restrictive posture than the policy itself. The announcement says exceptions would be granted only in “extraordinary circumstances” without laying out what exactly may make one’s circumstances extraordinary.

CNN spoke with half a dozen immigration attorneys, all of whom said it is too soon to tell how sweeping the changes would ultimately be. The lawyers said they are making clear to their clients that this represents simply a change in policy, not in law, and that the policy would almost certainly be challenged in court.

“I do not expect a massive series of denials, plus there is no way they can apply this memo retroactively,” said Charles Kuck, an Atlanta-based immigration attorney. “I bet you there’s a million pending adjustment applications, easy. You cannot say now to those million people, ‘Thanks for your money, I need you to go to your home country and restart this all over again.’ No judge upholds that — none.”

“So, I’m telling clients, ‘Sit back, relax, let this play out, follow the plan that your lawyer put in place, and you’re going to be OK,’” he added.

While USCIS described adjustment of status as a “loophole,” the process exists in a statute created by Congress and cannot be unilaterally scuttled by administrative policy.

“When Congress amends and betters a law 20 times, it’s hard to call that a loophole, as USCIS did in this policy announcement,” Kuck said. “It is the law, and the law will continue to allow for adjustment of status for individuals who otherwise qualify inside the United States.”

USCIS adjudicators appear to be applying aspects of the policy already. A request for evidence on a pending adjustment of status case obtained by CNN asks applicants to specify whether one of a dozen factors that adjudicators could consider weighing in the applicant’s benefit could apply to them — such as hardship to the applicant’s family if they are denied, evidence of value or service to the community and fluency or proficiency in English.

But there is no doubt the messaging has sowed chaos among potentially millions of immigrants — both those waiting on their adjustment of status application and those who had been considering applying for a green card.

That was likely the point, several immigrations attorneys said.

“They want it to be arbitrary and capricious,” said immigration attorney Jim Hacking. “They want people to be scared, and they want people to leave the US voluntarily.”

It represents just the latest way the Trump administration is seeking to curb avenues of legal — not just illegal — immigration, including making efforts to significantly reduce asylum claims; significantly curtailing the temporary protected status that allows those fleeing natural disasters or wars to live in the US without fear of deportations; halting almost all refugee admissions; and restricting work and student visas.

“I think this is yet another very clear indication that this is a nationalist campaign, not just a campaign to clean up the immigration service,” said Maureen Sweeney, a University of Maryland law professor and the director of the school’s Chacón Center for Immigrant Justice.

“I don’t think this administration was ever interested in a functional immigration system,” she added. “I think that they decided early on that it was in their political interests to shut down as much immigration as they could. I think they decided that anti-immigrant efforts — the splashier, the better — play well politically for them, and that’s what this is.”

The Department of Homeland Security declined to respond to CNN’s request for comment on those criticisms.

Those efforts to curtail legal immigration have already led to a significant brain drain in the US among highly qualified scientists, doctors and engineers who otherwise would have stayed to work or study in the country. Technology industry workers, in particular, were among those who lamented the new green card policy after it was announced last week.

Julia and Francisco, both of whom have PhDs and are active in their communities, may become the latest examples of that brain drain. Francisco is also a citizen of the European Union, and the couple is weighing alternatives.

“We have options, and we’re fighting really hard to stay in the US and contribute economically to the US,” Julia said. “But if that’s not a possibility, we are competitive in other markets, and we’ll have no other choice but to take our family elsewhere.”
