13-year-old student kills 2 women at school in Brazil, authorities say

    May 6, 2026 / 6:35 AM EDT / CBS/AP

A school shooting Tuesday in Acre state in northern Brazil left two women dead and two others injured, including an underage student, authorities said.

The state government said in a statement that a 13-year-old student admitted carrying out the attack at the public school Instituto Sao Jose in Rio Branco, the state capital.

The two fatalities were female staff members who died at the scene. Another staff member and a student were injured by gunfire and taken to a hospital. The injured student, an 11-year-old girl, was shot in the leg.

Officials did not disclose the victims’ identities. Police said the suspect was detained and used a gun owned by a legal guardian. Local media reported the weapon belonged to the teenager’s stepfather, who was also detained.

The suspect fired several shots in a hallway leading to the principal’s office, Lieutenant Colonel Felipe Russo of the Acre military police department told reporters. He surrendered to police after the attack.

Eduardo Rodrigues Cavalcante, a receptionist at a hotel adjacent to the school, described scenes of terror, as some students tried to jump over a wall separating the school from the hotel.

“The wall is six meters high, and only one person managed to jump over and take refuge here in the hotel. The other people were left on the school roof trying to escape,” the 19-year-old receptionist said, adding that he heard “gunshots and a lot of screaming.”

Images released by a local media outlet showed a woman being evacuated on a stretcher and scenes of heartbreak outside the school, with people crying and hugging each other.

“The state expresses deep solidarity with the victims’ families, the school community of Instituto Sao Jose and all education professionals affected by this incident,” Acre Gov. Mailza Assis said in a statement.

Officials said that classes had been suspended for three days at all schools in the state and that psychological support teams had been mobilized to assist students and teachers.

Brazil has seen a sharp increase in attacks on educational institutions in recent years.

In September 2025, two teenagers were shot and killed, and three others were wounded at a school in the northeastern state of Ceara.

In October 2023, a shooting at a school in Sao Paulo left a 17-year-old student dead and three others wounded. That same year, a teenager was killed and three others were wounded in a knife attack as they left a school in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais.

In April 2023, a 25-year-old man entered a daycare center in the southern state of Santa Catarina and killed four children between the ages of 3 and 7 with an axe.

In 2022, a former student armed with a semiautomatic pistol and a revolver killed four people and wounded 12 in two schools in Brazil. Police later said the suspect had a swastika pinned to his vest and had been planning the attacks for two years.

The House Oversight Committee’s probe into late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is turning focus to another high-profile Trump administration figure this week.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is voluntarily appearing before the congressional panel on Wednesday for a transcribed interview regarding his prior relationship with Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 after being indicted on federal sex trafficking charges.

Lutnick’s agreement to speak to the committee came after Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., pledged to force a vote to subpoena his testimony.

It is unclear how many lawmakers will attend, as the House of Representatives is in a district work period, also known as recess, this week. Still, Lutnick could face a grilling from House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Robert Garcia, D-Calif., and other Democrats who have accused him of hiding the full scope of his past ties to Epstein.

HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE DEMANDS DEPOSITIONS FROM BONDI AND LUTNICK IN EPSTEIN PROBE

“The secretary looks forward to addressing any questions on the record when he testifies voluntarily before the Oversight Committee,” a Department of Commerce spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “He looks forward to putting to rest the inaccurate and baseless claims in the media designed to distract from his historic work underway at the Commerce Department.”

Lutnick, a billionaire businessman and former CEO of Wall Street firm Cantor Fitzgerald, said during an interview with the New York Post last year that he broke off ties with Epstein in 2005. The two were formerly next-door neighbors in Manhattan’s Upper East Side neighborhood — their townhomes shared a wall.

However, the Commerce secretary conceded in a Senate hearing in February that he and his family had a brief lunch with Epstein in 2012 at his private Caribbean island after files dropped showing their contact continued beyond 2005.

“We left with all of my children, with my nannies and my wife. All together. We were on a family vacation,” Lutnick told lawmakers. “I don’t recall why we did it, but we did.”

That visit to the island came four years after Epstein was found guilty in Florida state court of soliciting a minor for prostitution. The disgraced financier served just 13 months in prison while being given immunity from federal prosecution, which critics have called a sweetheart deal.

Congressional Democrats seized on the discrepancies in Lutnick’s accounts during his testimony before the House Budget Committee in April.

HAKEEM JEFFRIES REFUSES THREE TIMES TO ANSWER QUESTION ABOUT APPROPRIATENESS OF PLASKETT’S EPSTEIN MESSAGES

“Why did you lie about your relationship with Jeffrey Epstein?” Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., asked Lutnick during the tense hearing.

Lutnick did not answer the question directly, instead arguing that Dean’s inquiry was not relevant to the hearing topic: the Commerce Department’s budget request for the upcoming fiscal year.

The Commerce secretary has maintained that his connection to Epstein was limited, and he has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., praised Lutnick’s decision to appear for a transcribed interview.

“I commend his demonstrated commitment to transparency and appreciate his willingness to engage with the Committee,” Comer said in a March statement to Fox News Digital. “I look forward to his testimony.”

Former Attorney General Pam Bondi is scheduled to sit for a transcribed interview on May 29 after being subpoenaed by Comer’s committee. Democrats and a handful of Republicans had vowed to pursue contempt charges against Bondi over her handling of Epstein files if she did not agree to testify before the committee.

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House but did not hear back before publication.

(CBS News)

Employers are demanding AI skills. What’s the best way to learn them?

Fluency in artificial intelligence is increasingly a prerequisite in today’s labor market, with employers across industries seeking AI-literate job candidates.

Research from Resume Genius found that 8 in 10 hiring managers consider AI skills a priority. And in a sign of the times, other data shows that most employers would hire a candidate with AI skills over one with additional years of work experience.

Yet while many workers today are well aware of the need to hone their AI chops, few employers offer the necessary training, said Lisa Gevelber, who heads Google’s “Grow with Google” initiative, a program that provides digital skills training to workers and businesses.

“We know AI can be extremely beneficial and that hiring managers say knowing how to use it is essential, but employers aren’t meeting that need in terms of training employees,” she told CBS News.

Indeed, companies often aren’t the best place to acquire the kind of AI skills that are suddenly in demand, said Sam Caucci, founder of 1Huddle, a company that partners with firms to develop corporate training for workers.

“Companies and academia are not equipped because the curriculum development process is so slow,” while AI advances at breakneck speed, he said.

    How can workers level up?

So how can people learn about AI in ways that might boost a job search or advance their careers? According to AI and career development experts, a good way to start is simply by using publicly available AI tools daily.

“Workers are learning AI natively by going directly to platforms to get better at using it,” Caucci said. “They are learning AI by prompting ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, you name your platform.”

Such platforms are free, while paid subscriptions offer additional benefits and features. Some AI companies also offer free training. For example, ChatGPT developer OpenAI offers training programs in “prompt engineering,” which it describes as “the art of communicating with AI models to get a desired output.”

People interested in getting up to speed on AI can also find a plethora of free training materials online, Caucci noted, pointing to AI courses on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, among other platforms, as a good way “to acquire a lot of baseline knowledge.”

Ask AI how to build AI skills

Christine Cruzvergara, vice president of higher education and student success at Handshake, a hiring platform, also recommends leaning on AI to learn how to use it.

“You can literally use AI to teach you AI,” she said. “Go to ChatGPT or Claude and say you’re interested in learning more about how to use AI in your role, and it will help you get started. Say, ‘Over the course of two weeks or one month, can you build out a schedule of courses?’ And it will give you a play-by-play of what you should do.”

While some signs suggest that growing corporate adoption of AI is weakening demand for entry-level workers, Cruzvergara expects more companies, over time, to recruit younger adults, many of whom are developing expertise in using the technology for a range of purposes.

“Employers are looking to this next generation to do that,” she said. “They are the first fully-native AI generation. They are already self-taught.”

    Show what you know

Demonstrating your AI skills to prospective employers is also critical, according to career experts.

“Just saying, ‘I use ChatGPT,’ is not how workers should be reflecting their skills,” Caucci of 1Huddle said. “Make sure your resume has an AI throughline.”

That means outlining examples of how AI has helped you work more efficiently and productively, as well as spelling out any additional AI qualifications or training.

Grow with Google is one place workers can turn to earn AI credentials. For example, the program’s “Google AI Professional Certificate” course is available online for $49 per month. The certificate consists of seven modules, each taking about an hour to complete, while students can move at their own pace.

“We are teaching the things that employers want employees to be able to do,” Google’s Gevelber said.

That includes developing core skills, such as using AI for more effective communication, building presentations and conducting data analysis.

“Companies buy talent — they don’t build it,” Caucci said. “My advice is to stack as many of those credentials as you’re able to onto your resume to signal that this is an important area of focus for you.”

3 evacuated from hantavirus cruise ship as Canary Islands does about-face, opts not to let it dock there

    2026-05-06T06:50:00-0400 / CBS News

Three patients suspected of having the hantavirus have been evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship and are on their way to the Netherlands to receive medical care, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. The three are German, Dutch and British, the last of whom is a crew member, according to the WHO.

The rare outbreak of the virus has already killed three.

And in the latest twist in the hellish ordeal for the 150 or so passengers on board, the leader of the Canary Islands has rejected a plan for the ship to dock there.

The plan, coordinated between the Spanish government and the WHO, had been for the ship to head to the Canary Islands for a “full investigation” and “full inspection” after the three were evacuated.

But the leader of the archipelago’s regional government, Fernando Clavijo, rejected the idea Wednesday, saying he has requested a meeting with Spain’s socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

In a social media post Wednesday, Clavijo, who is part of the conservative opposition, wrote: “The Canary Islands always acts with responsibility, but it cannot accept decisions taken behind the backs of the Canary Islands institutions and without sufficient information to the population.”

A flight planned to evacuate the ship’s doctor, who has been taken sick, to the Canary Islands was cancelled, a source close to the regional presidency told the French news agency AFP on Wednesday.

Spain’s health ministry announced later that they would instead be treated in the Netherlands.

The news comes as South African authorities confirmed Wednesday that they had identified the so-called Andes strain of the hantavirus in two people previously on the cruise. The Andes strain, which is found primarily in Argentina and Chile, can be transmitted from human to human, unlike any other strain of the virus.

Also on Wednesday, Swiss authorities announced that a man who previously travelled on the ship and returned home at the end of April has also tested positive for the Andes strain of the virus.

“There is currently no risk to the Swiss public,” they said in a statement.

And the French ministry of health has told BFM TV that a French “contact case” can been confirmed. The man is believed to have travelled on the same flight as one of the two patients evacuated to Johannesburg for treatment in late April.

There is currently one British national in South Africa in intensive care. French authorities are likely referring to the other patient evacuated to Johannesburg: a 69-year-old Dutch woman who got off the boat with “gastrointestinal symptoms” on April 24 and died two days later, after her condition “deteriorated during a flight to Johannesburg,” the WHO said.

That brings the total number of suspected or confirmed cases to nine: three dead, five confirmed as receiving treatment, and the Frenchman, about whom there have been few details given.

The ship’s operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, said two infectious disease specialists were en route Wednesday from the Netherlands to the ship and will “remain with the vessel after its anticipated departure from Cape Verde.”

The Dutch-flagged MV Hontius, a luxury cruise-liner, left Ushuaia in Argentina on April 1. It has been anchored off the island of Cape Verde off Africa’s west coast since Sunday.

Ann Lindstrand, the WHO’s representative in Cape Verde, told CBS News’ Ramy Inocencio on Tuesday that there is no risk of a pandemic-level threat with the hantavirus, given the low likelihood of human-to-human transmission.

Spanish and Dutch authorities are “intensely discussing” what will happen next to the passengers on board, she added. They have been told to remain in their cabins as much as possible.

“If there is the need for a quarantine, that will be a decision of the health authorities in Spain or Holland at that point in time, with the close collaboration with the advice of WHO,” Lindstrand said.

If needed, a quarantine could last as long as two months, since the incubation period for hantavirus is between one and eight weeks, she said.

“Eight weeks is a horribly long time to be in quarantine,” she added.

Lindstrand said she is in touch with a volunteer doctor on the boat who told her that passengers were “coping surprisingly well,” though they are anxious to know what their next port of call will be.

“We have heard from quite a few people on the boat,” said Maria Van Kerkhove, the World Health Organization’s director of epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention, on Tuesday. “We just want you to know we are working with the ship’s operators. We are working with the countries where you are from. We hear you. We know that you are scared.”
