    Summary

    • Nearly half of Americans now identify as political independents, the highest level in over a decade as measured by CNN polling.
    • The new poll shows a shift away from Republicans since 2024, particularly among younger and male voters.
    • Independents are younger and less politically engaged than party members, with only 67% registered to vote.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

Nearly half of Americans say they don’t consider themselves a part of either major political party, the highest level of partisan independence measured by CNN polling in more than a decade.

Independents have grown to 47% of the population, rising roughly 10 points since just after President Donald Trump’s first term as president, according to CNN polling. Over the last 20 years, CNN polling found independent identification peaked in 2015 at just a shade higher than it is today: 48% of Americans on average across all CNN polling that year were independents.

The poll suggests a shift away from Republicans since 2024 among registered voters, another ominous sign for the GOP ahead of the upcoming midterm elections as Trump’s approval ratings have sagged.

Democrats and Republicans split the remainder of the population in the new poll, with 27% of Americans identifying as Democrats and 26% as Republicans. Many independents do still lean toward one party or the other, and with those leaners included, 39% of Americans align more with Democrats, 37% with Republicans, and 25% say they don’t lean either way. In a further sign of just how evenly divided American politics is today, when those who don’t lean are pushed to choose a side, they also split almost evenly.

Neither party has held a meaningful advantage in overall identification in CNN’s benchmarking polls since 2021, when Democrats held a 6-point edge over Republicans. Since then, the parties have been separated by just 1 point in each year of CNN’s tracking.

In this midterm election year, the new poll finds that among registered voters, Democrats narrowly outnumber Republicans, 31% to 28%, with 41% of voters saying they don’t identify with either party. While the margin is small, that’s a notable shift away from the GOP compared with 2024, when 34% of registered voters considered themselves Republicans, 31% Democrats and 35% said they didn’t consider themselves a part of either party.

Since 2024, younger voters, male voters and White voters without college degrees have shifted away from the GOP, but not necessarily toward the Democrats. In the new poll, 17% of voters younger than 45 say they consider themselves Republicans, down from 26% who said the same in 2024. But the share who call themselves Democrats is fairly steady at 33%, with 50% saying they don’t consider themselves a part of either party. There are similar patterns among men – young men in particular – and White voters without college degrees.

    Who are political independents?

Independents are not all politically in the middle. Many at least lean toward one of the two major parties, and previous polling has identified several types of independents with different levels of political engagement and varying ideological views.

Demographically, independents stand out from partisans in several ways. Independents are notably younger than partisans – 63% of those who don’t affiliate with a party are younger than 50, compared with 52% of Democrats and 38% of Republicans. They are more apt to say they live in a city or urban area than Republicans (40% vs. 28%), but less likely to be city-dwellers than are Democrats (49%). And their incomes tilt a bit lower than partisans, with nearly half in this category saying their annual household income falls below $50,000.

They are also far more likely to be checked out of politics. Just 67% say they are registered to vote, compared with more than 80% each among Democrats and Republicans, and only 25% say they frequently seek out the latest political news.

The CNN poll was conducted among 2,480 adults nationwide by SSRS from May 7-31, using a combination of online and telephone interviews. The survey samples were originally drawn from two sources – an address-based sample and a random-digit dial sample of prepaid cell phone numbers – and combined. Respondents were contacted by mail, phone or text. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

CNN’s Ariel Edwards-Levy and Edward Wu contributed to this report.

Georgia Republicans take on Ossoff; Oklahoma votes on minimum wage: Tuesday’s US primaries

    2026-06-16 10:02:46 UTC / Reuters

WASHINGTON, June 16 (Reuters) – Georgia Republicans go to the polls Tuesday to select their candidate for U.S. Senate to take on incumbent Jon Ossoff, a rising Democratic star and potential presidential candidate in 2028.

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump endorsed U.S. Representative Mike Collins — and dubbing him “MAGA Mike” on Truth Social — over former football coach Derek Dooley in the state’s primary runoff.

Get weekly news and analysis on U.S. politics and how it matters to the world with the Reuters Politics U.S. newsletter. Sign up here.

Outgoing Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who angered the president ‌by refusing to help him overturn the 2020 election result in Georgia, endorsed Dooley.

Voters in Alabama, Oklahoma and Washington, D.C., will also head to the polls, and Bay Area voters will winnow a crowded field of candidates hoping to serve out former U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell’s term.

    Here is what we’re watching:

    FACING THE OSSOFF FUNDRAISING JUGGERNAUT

Ossoff awaits the winner of a runoff between Collins and Dooley. Trump endorsed Collins over the weekend, calling him a “WARRIOR and WINNER” who supported Trump “from the very beginning.”

“I don’t know Derek Dooley, and neither does anyone else, but he seems like a nice person,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“Unfortunately, he has lived outside of Georgia for most of his life, didn’t vote in 2020 or 2016, and said that I lost Georgia in 2020 when, in actuality, the facts have now proven that I won by a lot!” Trump lost Georgia to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 by 0.3 percentage points.

In response to the president’s endorsement of Collins, Dooley said he has “great respect” for Trump but cast himself as the outsider best positioned to beat Ossoff, according to media reports.

Either Republican will struggle to compete with Ossoff’s war chest, now flush with nearly $33 million compared to Collins’ $1.2 million and Dooley’s $1.7 million. Ossoff’s team has said his campaign is powered by hundreds of thousands of small donors, with average donations each quarter ranging from $32 to $38.

Georgia and Michigan are the only Trump-won states Senate Democrats are defending in November’s midterm elections. Democrats would need to net four seats to win control of the chamber.

    TRUMP’S CLOUT IN THE SOUTH

Trump will be looking to keep his streak alive on Tuesday after victories by candidates he endorsed in recent primaries.

In other runoffs on Tuesday, Trump endorsed Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones’ gubernatorial bid. In Alabama, Trump has endorsed Representative Barry Moore’s Senate campaign over former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson.

Jones faces businessman Rick Jackson in the race to succeed Kemp. The winner will run against Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, a former Atlanta mayor and past adviser to Biden.

While Trump may be picking winners in the primaries, the question remains whether his candidates can win in the general election in November, particularly when Trump himself isn’t on the ballot.

“This is not going to be a particularly good year to be a Republican in this state,” said ‌Charles Bullock, a political science professor at the University of Georgia. “Democrats could win the governorship.”

    DC CONSIDERS A DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST

With the departures of Mayor Muriel Bowser and congressional delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, Washington will elect a new mayor for the first time since 2014 and a new non-voting delegate for the first time since 1990.

Leading in the polls for mayor is Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, a democratic socialist in the mold of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Last week, Trump said he “wouldn’t like it” if Lewis George were elected mayor and threatened to “take back Washington and run it on the federal basis” if she wins.

Her top opponent in the crowded race is former Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. The two have spent nearly $6 million combined.

The top candidates to succeed Norton, 89, are Councilmembers Brooke Pinto and Robert White, and former Democratic National Committee deputy finance chair Kinney Zalesne.

The primary winners in both races are expected to win the general election in the heavily Democratic district.

    STATE VOTES ON MINIMUM WAGE

Oklahoma voters will choose whether to approve a ballot measure that would raise the state’s $7.25 minimum wage to $15 by 2029. Republican Governor Kevin Stitt and

more than 100 Republican state legislators
oppose the increase, with lawmakers saying its passage would lead to “severe” economic fallout, such as job losses and rising prices.

But not all Oklahoma Republicans agree: Republican Labor Commissioner Leslie Osborn supports the ballot measure,

    telling a local news outlet
everyday costs have risen while Oklahoma’s minimum wage hasn’t changed since 2009.

“You absolutely cannot pay the gas to get to a job, have an apartment and live extremely frugally. You’re going to have to rely on government programs,” she said. “As a Republican, we should want people … to stand on their own two feet.”

    THE RACE TO SUCCEED SWALWELL

On Tuesday, voters in the San Francisco area will hold an initial election to choose candidates to complete the term of Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell, who earlier this year ended his campaign for California governor and resigned from Congress amid sexual misconduct allegations. Swalwell denied the allegations.

Among the 11 candidates are State Senator Aisha Wahab and Bay Area Rapid Transit Board President Melissa Hernandez, both Democrats. The top two finishers, regardless of party, will advance to an August 18 special general election to serve through early January.

Wahab and Hernandez have already advanced to the November general election for a new full two‑year term in the Bay Area district.

BASE jumping accident kills 2 including extreme athlete Andy Lewis, who performed with Madonna at Super Bowl

    June 16, 2026 5:29 AM EDT / AP

A weekend BASE jumping accident in a Utah canyon killed two people, one of them a daredevil athlete best known for performing onstage with Madonna at the 2012 Super Bowl, authorities said.

Emergency responders were dispatched Sunday to a report of people injured in a BASE jumping attempt at Mineral Bottom, a remote desert area near the Utah-Colorado line, according to the sheriff’s office in Grand County, Utah.

The office confirmed one of the dead was Andy Lewis, an extreme athlete known for feats in BASE jumping, a dangerous sport that involves parachuting to the ground after jumping from a tall fixed object such as a building, bridge or desert cliff overlooking a deep canyon.

The victims had been conducting a tandem jump in which two people are harnessed together, according to a social media post by Aerial Arts Moab, an acrobatics company that described Lewis as “co-owner and best friend.”

Lewis also owned BASE Jump Moab, a business that offered tandem jumps to inexperienced customers who would be harnessed to a guide wearing the parachute. Promotional videos on the company’s website show pairs of people stepping off the edges of towering cliffs and briefly plummeting before their parachutes open.

    Lewis’ risk-taking knew few bounds

In BASE jumping circles, Lewis had a huge following and a reputation for pushing the envelope – leaping into tighter spaces or deploying his parachute later than his peers would dare, said John McEvoy, a BASE jumping instructor in Twin Falls, Idaho, who has jumped with Lewis.

“He had an incredible level of athleticism and skill that was developed over years of practice,” McEvoy said. “But then he would take an incredible amount of risk.”

Grand County Sheriff Jamison Wiggins confirmed the other person who was killed was Danny Joe Kregle, a 68-year-old father and grandfather who was described by a family member as an accomplished businessman.

“Danny had a wonderful sense of humor and was always looking for ways to make people laugh,” relative Sydney Laverty told The Times-Independent. “One of his greatest joys was performing magic tricks alongside his granddaughter.”

Lewis was also a prominent figure in the niche sports of slacklining and tricklining, which combine elements of high-wire walking with aerial acrobatics – sometimes at perilous heights.

He went from obscure athlete to overnight celebrity when he appeared onstage in Madonna’s 2012 Super Bowl halftime show. Dressed in a Roman toga, Lewis bounced and executed tricks on his inch-wide line like it was a trampoline while Madonna sang behind him.

“My phone actually rang itself to death three days in a row,” Lewis said soon afterward in an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s late night show.

BASE jumping much riskier than skydiving, study shows

Though there’s no official tally of BASE jumping deaths, a list compiled by the website BASEaddict.com shows 540 total fatalities worldwide since 1981 – including 30 people killed last year. Prominent deaths include BASE jumper Dean Potter and his climbing partner, Graham Hunt, who were killed in 2015 while attempting a wingsuit flight in California’s Yosemite National Park.

A study focused on BASE jumping in Norway, published in a medical journal in 2007, estimated that BASE jumping carried risks of injury or death five to eight times greater than skydiving.

Lewis openly acknowledged the sport’s inherent danger.

“It’s weird to think about how many people are dead, because it’s like a normal thing,” Lewis told documentary filmmaker Ella Warnick in an interview published last year.

Tandem BASE jumping carries additional risk because it straps together two people, one of whom generally lacks experience, under a single parachute, McEvoy said. But because they involve novices, they also tend to be the most low-risk, basic types of jumps.

“Within BASE, it’s a very controversial topic,” McEvoy said. “There’s a lot of people who say it’s the stupidest thing in the world and others arguing: `No, we’re giving people the experience of their lives.’”

No one immediately returned phone, text and Facebook messages left Monday for BASE Jump Moab.

Lewis won four straight world championships in competitive slacklining from 2008 through 2011. Lewis set a Guinness World Record for slackline surfing, swaying his feet side to side in a rocking motion that mimics surfing, while keeping his balance above China’s Diaoshuilou waterfall in 2011.

In 2014, he walked a slackline suspended between two hot air balloons more than 4,000 feet above the Nevada desert.

Lewis’ other sport made him an overnight celebrity, thanks to Madonna.

    2026-06-16T10:03:17.933Z / https://www.reuters.com/business/some-fed-may-pencil-hike-most-wont-warsh-is-question-mark-2026-06-16/

去年夏天由特朗普任命的美联储理事斯蒂芬·米兰在任期间, consistently submitted rate projections that were the lowest — by his own admission — among all policymakers.

Some at Fed may pencil in a hike. Most won’t. Warsh is a question mark

    2026-06-16T10:03:17.933Z / https://www.reuters.com/business/some-fed-may-pencil-hike-most-wont-warsh-is-question-mark-2026-06-16/

WASHINGTON, June 16 (Reuters) – A majority of Federal Reserve policymakers now feel they will need to keep U.S. short-term borrowing costs on hold all year, projections due out on Wednesday are expected to show, with a small number seen penciling in a rate hike to stop a spike in inflation from getting entrenched in the economy.

The anticipated adjustments to the Fed’s so-called dot plot would mark a hawkish shift from where Fed officials ‌were just three months ago. They also present a particularly sticky communications challenge for new Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh, as stronger-than-expected job gains in recent months and inflation on the rise since the start of the Iran war have shifted the focus of arguments at the policy-setting table from whether to cut to the possibility of a hike.

President Donald Trump picked Warsh to replace Jerome Powell with the explicit expectation his new Fed chief would lower interest rates. Warsh has offered a couple of rationales for cutting rates, including what he sees as AI’s disinflationary impact, but he has also said he has made no promises and told lawmakers at his confirmation hearing that he does not believe in giving any guidance at all.

Indeed, the biggest question about the Fed’s June projections is what Warsh himself will write down — if, indeed, he will write anything at all.

“It could be that Chair Warsh simply decides not to participate as a means of signaling how little regard he has for this exercise,” Regions Bank Chief Economist Richard Moody wrote last week.

TD Securities economists expect Warsh to omit his own dot as “a more deliberate way of minimizing any hawkish message that might stem from the June dot plot.”

Other analysts expect Warsh to participate, but to launch a review of Fed communications that could spell the eventual end of the dot plot, published quarterly since 2012 and generally regarded as a useful indication of where the Fed’s 19 policymakers see interest rates going.

“We expect Warsh will submit his own projections,” argued JPMorgan Chief U.S. Economist Michael Feroli. “To not do so would look like a spiteful dissent against his own committee.”

It could be that Warsh, in the job for just three weeks, simply pleads he needs more time to settle in before participating in the forecasts. Also, submitting a dot could raise another risk for him: It might reveal he is not nearly as dovish as Trump would want. Stephen Miran, in his brief run as a Fed governor appointed by Trump last summer, consistently submitted rate projections that were the lowest — by his own admission — among all policymakers. With Miran now departed to make room for Warsh on the Fed board, his low forecast will be gone from the plot, and any absence of a comparably low dot in its place would out Warsh as more hawkish.

    ‘WALK A VERY FINE LINE’

In March, most U.S. central bankers thought they would probably end up cutting rates by the end of the year, either because inflation was receding, the labor ‌market was weakening, or both. Only one policymaker had written down a rate hike, and that was for 2027, not 2026.

On Wednesday, central bankers are expected to leave the policy rate in the 3.50%-3.75% range and to change their post-meeting statement so that it no longer suggests the Fed’s next move, when it comes, will be a rate cut. An upward drift in rate-path projections in the dot plot would underscore the committee’s new openness to a rate hike, even if most still do not expect it.

“We think the debate within the FOMC is now about whether a long policy hold would suffice to stabilize inflation, or instead raising rates would be necessary,” BNP Paribas economists wrote last week.

The Fed will also publish projections for the labor market and inflation that may reflect greater policymaker optimism on jobs and pessimism about prices than they signaled in March, views that would offer some rationale for what’s expected to be a changed dot plot.

JPMorgan’s Feroli, for instance, predicts Fed policymakers will replace their March forecast for a year-end unemployment rate of 4.4% with a forecast of 4.3%, matching the actual unemployment rate for the past three months.

He figures they will also write down year-end core PCE inflation at 2.9%, while other economists expect the figure to top 3%. Either way, it would be up from the 2.7% they expected as of March for this key measure of underlying inflation pressures, though lower than the year-on-year rate of 3.4% that economists now expect a government report will show for May.

In his run as Fed leader, Powell regularly noted that economic forecasts often prove way off the mark, and the Fed’s “dots” are neither predictions nor promises. Analysts expect Warsh to emphasize that same view in his post-meeting news conference, even if he tries in other ways to put distance between himself and his predecessor, who continues to serve as a governor.

Meanwhile economists polled by Reuters also believe the Fed will likely hold its policy rate steady this year, but just as within the Fed there are a range of views. Economists at PGIM, for instance, say the Fed will need to raise rates three times this year to bring inflation under control.

Those at Citibank, noting that oil prices have dropped on recent progress toward ending the Iran war, expect three rate cuts to shore up what they believe will be a weakening labor market.

“Rookie Fed Chair Warsh and Co will have to walk a very fine line,” wrote Evercore ISI’s Krishna Guha. “Too hawkish, and bets on rate hikes will cascade, sending the equity market lower. Too dovish, and longer-term yields and break-evens will rise, also impacting stocks.”

FIRST ON FOX: The FBI and its law enforcement partners disrupted an alleged plot targeting this weekend’s UFC Freedom 250 event in Washington, D.C., officials told Fox News Digital.

Five people were in custody as of Monday, and investigators identified 23 people as part of a potential network of plotters. The alleged plan involved using explosive-laden drones to hit buildings near the event, force a mass evacuation and steer crowds toward a pre-staged sniper team, officials said.

A “second wave” was then allegedly planned to storm the White House gate, according to officials.

The FBI first learned of the threat on June 10 and worked with partners to secure probable cause for an arrest in Cincinnati, where one suspect was taken into custody.

Investigators later uncovered Signal chats in which multiple people allegedly discussed attacking the UFC event. An initial review of one suspect’s iPhone identified at least 23 Signal users discussing pre-operational activity, officials said.

Some of those involved allegedly planned to travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia, on June 12 or 13 to prepare for the attack.

One suspect allegedly told investigators the goal was to target “capitalist elites,” “billionaires” or politicians who received donations from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

The investigation stretched across at least 12 FBI field offices.

FBI Director Kash Patel credited the FBI, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and law enforcement partners with acting quickly across multiple states to prevent the alleged attack.

“Thanks to the rapid action of this FBI, our partners, and the Department of Justice in a multi-state operation, multiple individuals are now in custody and allegedly planned attacks were stopped cold,” Patel said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Patel said the operation showed the FBI’s ability to respond quickly when threats emerge.

“While the result represented the best of investigative work, it was also nothing out of the ordinary for this law enforcement team,” Patel said. “We are built to detect, respond to, and bring to justice those who threaten the lives of American citizens — particularly during large gatherings like the historic UFC 250 fight. That’s exactly what we did here.”

“I want to thank our great agents and partners, this work remains ongoing, and we will continue to update the public as permitted,” Patel added.

The alleged plot targeted UFC Freedom 250, a high-profile White House event held on the South Lawn as part of President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday weekend.

The event drew an estimated 4,300 attendees, including about 1,200 active-duty service members, as 14 fighters from around the world competed inside a wire-mesh cage Sunday night.

The alleged plot comes amid a growing series of threats and security incidents involving Trump and senior administration officials, fueling heightened concerns about political violence.
