NEW YORK, June 21 (Reuters) – People caught vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Washington’s National Mall will be fully prosecuted, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said on ‌Sunday.

President Donald Trump has blamed vandalism for recent problems with the newly renovated pool, including its new blue paint peeling off. Citations for vandalism have been issued, Pirro said on Sunday, adding that even minor crimes must be prosecuted to keep the U.S. capital safe.

The peeling paint was visible in the 2,000-foot-long rectangular pool, a major national landmark, less than two weeks after Trump declared its $14.7 million renovation project completed on June 6. Trump on Saturday claimed, without providing evidence, that vandals poured corrosive chemicals into the pool.

“Anyone who is in a position of vandalizing or attempting to vandalize will face the criminal justice system in D.C.,” Pirro told Fox News’ “Sunday ‌Briefing” program.

The pool has also suffered an algae bloom that makes the water look green. Those adding products to the pool that can generate algae could face more severe charges, Pirro said.

Workers from the National Park Service earlier this week poured hydrogen peroxide into the pool to combat the algae.

Trump first brought up allegations of vandalism on Friday, when he posted on social media that 75% of the algae is gone. He also accused ABC News journalist Jonathan Karl of “trying to rip the rubber off of the surface” of the pool. ABC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)

College sports sees pivotal moment as Senate looks to move legislation on NIL, transfers across goal line

Full Senate plans to debate the legislation in July as lawmakers warn inaction could let big programs outbid smaller schools

Senate stepping in to regulate college sports

The Senate is actively preparing to debate a bipartisan bill that could significantly alter the landscape of intercollegiate sports. Lawmakers aim to create national standards for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) money and curb roster chaos from transfers. Senators Cruz, Cantwell, Baldwin, and Booker discuss the necessity of federal intervention due to perceived failures of the NCAA.

Congress could determine the future of college sports.

Thursday was a seminal day as to whether Congress can either salvage – or potentially ruin – intercollegiate athletics. It’s a congressional Hail Mary as senators address name, image and likeness (NIL) deals for athletes, compensation packages and transfers between schools.

“College sports is in crisis,” declared Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz, R-Texas.

“There’s a sense of urgency in that room you can feel it, right? You’ve got to do something rapidly,” said Sen. John Hickenlooper, D-Colo.

The Commerce Committee approved a bipartisan gameplan to fundamentally alter college sports. The full Senate plans to debate the bill in July.

“We have put something on the table that’s going to bring more certainty and predictability to the system,” said Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., the top Democrat on the panel.

Establishing a nationwide payout framework is a key aspect of the deal. Lawmakers know that inaction could mean that monied, major programs will simply outbid smaller schools. Perhaps even for a future NFL MVP.

“I’m worried that we’ll never see a Josh Allen again at the University of Wyoming,” said Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., referring to the Buffalo Bills standout quarterback. “It leaves those of us who don’t really have a donor base [to struggle to] pay for players of that caliber.”

The bill also restricts athletes to one transfer between schools during a five-year period without a penalty.

“Now we have this unbelievable number of players that get in the (transfer) portal every year and we have nothing to control the agents,” said former Alabama head football coach Nick Saban to a Senate panel earlier this month.

UCLA QUARTERBACK ATTEMPTS TO EXPLOIT LOOPHOLE IN TRANSFER PORTAL WINDOW WITH UNIQUE TACTIC

Lawmakers believe this plan will curb the constant roster chaos.

Advocates of the legislation believe it protects student-athletes.

“It definitely makes sure that predatory contracting done by agents or universities or conferences or shill organizations, don’t get students stuck in binding arbitration,” said Cantwell.

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., is the only former Division I college athlete in the Senate. He played tight end for Stanford’s football team. Booker opposes the bill.

“I’ve seen decade after decade, how the NCAA has screwed athletes. And so we need to make sure there’s firm athletic protections and not trust the NCAA to do it,” said Booker.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., is the only former Division I football head coach in the Senate. He led programs at Auburn, Ole Miss, Texas Tech and Cincinnati. He joins Booker in condemning the legislation.

“They’re trying to turn college sports into the same situation we got in with Obamacare,” said Tuberville on Fox News Radio. “We can’t get the federal government involved in college sports.”

During a floor speech, Tuberville argued that “Congress should not decide how much money student athletes can earn.”

Yet Tuberville conceded that “college sports is facing a five-alarm fire. It’s getting ready to be over with as we know it.”

That’s why Cruz believes Congress should intervene.

“If the alternative is do nothing and allow chaos to continue in college sports to be destroyed, I think that alternative is unacceptable,” said Cruz.

Congress struggles to do lots of things right. That’s why some observers doubt that Congress is a good substitute for the NCAA.

Matt Mackowiak is a former GOP Senate aide who’s written about Brendan Sorsby, his gambling scandal and the saga involving Texas Tech megabooster Cody Campbell. Big money lured Sorsby to the school for a hot minute. Mackowiak says the Cruz/Cantwell bill fails to prevent another Sorsby situation. But Mackowiak’s biggest concern is congressional willingness to undercut the NCAA.

“I don’t know why you need to create some new system and make it overly complicated. You have a governing body. They haven’t had a lot of teeth in their enforcement in recent years.”

Some of that is because super conferences like the Big Ten and SEC wield more power than the NCAA. Notably, neither of those conferences endorsed the Senate bill. But it was the NCAA which demanded congressional intervention. The NCAA has told lawmakers it can’t address NIL on its own and pushed for a national standard set by Capitol Hill.

But Booker isn’t enamored with the NCAA.

“The NCAA, which can’t be trusted, has shown decade after decade, (of) failing college athletes,” he said.

There’s concern the bill could undercut current sports broadcasters by diversifying the number of streamers and outlets carrying games. That could complicate viewing. Additional options aren’t necessarily good for fans if they struggle to find their games.

“Then the fans get hurt because all the content is behind a paywall,” said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.

“I suspect everyone in this room has heard about frustrations from their constituents in trying to watch their favorite professional sports teams play. They are met with blackouts and paywalls,” said Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis.

The House of Representatives stumbled in two previous efforts to regulate college sports. The House Republican leadership had to yank completely different college sports regulation bills off the floor in December and this spring because they lacked the votes. So, now it’s the Senate’s turn to try.

There are lots of questions about whether the Senate, like the House, can command the votes for this bill. Moreover, what bandwidth does the Senate even have for serious legislating in July? The Senate is trying to figure out what’s next about the nomination of Jay Clayton to serve as director of national intelligence. The future of FISA Section 702 – the nation’s top program to fight terrorism – is up in the air after authorization expired a few weeks ago. And some Republicans are optimistic the Senate can advance a third “reconciliation package” to pay for the war in Iran, cut taxes and reduce fraud.

It would seem that those priorities might outweigh something on college sports.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: HOUSE DEMS QUESTION SPORTS BILL TIMING AMID LANE KIFFIN CONTROVERSY

A Senate panel approved legislation supporters say would bring stability to college sports as critics warn it expands federal involvement.(Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)

But as Cruz and Tuberville both say, the situation in college sports is dire. There’s worry that the SEC and/or Big Ten might form a mega conference. Or develop their own broadcast platforms for games. And there may be a lot more Brendan Sorsbys as gaming becomes more ubiquitous.

None of this is going to get any better.

Waylon Jennings’ son Shooter on rescuing his dad’s music

    June 21, 2026 / 9:47 AM EDT / CBS News

Shooter Jennings is a singer, musician, and the producer of Grammy-award winning albums for Brandi Carlisle and Tanya Tucker. At Sunset Sound in Hollywood, where Dolly Parton, Fleetwood Mac and Prince all recorded, Jennings – who’s made about 40 records here – is now using the space to produce a project that is deeply personal and emotional.

Having a conversation about his father, he says, will get him teared up. “I wear my emotions on my face all the time anyway, so for everybody out there, I’m a crier,” he laughed.

Raw emotions from the son of a man known for them: Waylon Jennings. With his black hat, beard and baritone voice, Waylon defined the rebel, gritty spirit of the country music outlaw movement. Blending honkytonk, folk, and Southern rock to create a revolutionary sound, Waylon had 16 #1 hits, including “I’m a Rambling Man,” “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” (with Willie Nelson), and the theme song for TV’s “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

Shooter is keeping his father’s legacy alive by producing long-lost material which he found stashed away. So far, there are two albums: “Songbird,” and the upcoming “Diamonds.”

“I’m proud of him and I’m proud of the work that I’m doing, and I’m proud of the legacy he left behind, because you know, he just was a good guy,” said Shooter.

Listening to the previously unreleased tracks, Shooter said, “It felt like he was having a conversation with the listener.”

And talking to you? “Yeah, yeah, for sure. Talking to anyone who knows and loves his voice. It’s, like, emotional, beautiful material about love and life, and that’s what he connected with – the music, and the lyrics, and the dream.”

Music producer Shooter Jennings with correspondent Robert Costa. CBS News

That dream began in a small town in the Lone Star State. Shooter says Texas played a big role in shaping his father, “because he wanted to get out of there so bad, you know? He grew up in this little town that’s just right between Lubbock and New Mexico, and it’s, like, flat in every way. Like he says in his book, ‘If your dog ran away, you could watch him go for three days!’”

While working as a teenage DJ, Waylon Jennings met fellow Texan Buddy Holly. “He was his best friend,” said Shooter. “My dad always told me: not a day went by that he didn’t think about Buddy.”

Holly encouraged Waylon to become a musician. They toured together, and were playing the same show on a fateful night in Iowa in 1959. “The last conversation that was had was like, ‘I hope your bus breaks down and you freeze to death.’ And then he says, ‘I hope your whole plane crashes,’ you know?”

Shooter says he was haunted by Holly’s death. But he carried on, started a band, and eventually moved to Nashville, where he became a star, and a symbol of a new kind of sound.

Asked to define outlaw country, Shooter replied, “It was a marketing tool. They came up with it in Nashville. It was a way to package Waylon and Willie, and then kind of called it the outlaw movement.”

Shooter said his father changed music: “He got his creative freedom and artistic integrity and control, which is what he wanted. and that kind of freed everybody else in Nashville – independence for artists.”

Waylon was uncompromising, and controversial; he walked out during the “We Are the World” recording session. “He goes, ‘This isn’t about the kids.’ That’s the first thing he thought. He thought, ‘This is about the look of this,’” said Shooter, whose father thought too much attention was on photo ops, not fundraising. “And then he said, ‘So by the time it got to be 4:00 in the morning and they were like, “Let’s do it in Swahili,” he was like, “I’m out of here. I’ve been here all day. This has been too long.”

“And they were gonna keep going, you know, and make him try to learn a language or something. And I think he was already like, ‘I can’t speak any other languages,’ you know? And later, I was on a bus with him, and Paul Simon walked in and he goes, ‘Waylon, every one of us wanted to walk out of that thing, and you were the only one that had the * to do it!’”

Waylon acknowledged that he long struggled with a drug habit. But he quit cold turkey in 1984. The catalyst, he said, was his young son.

Waylon was candid about his struggles with drugs, and how he sometimes spent over $1,000 a day. “It bothered him so much,” said Shooter. “It didn’t affect me one bit. When I was a kid, he quit by the time I was, like, five or six. And I think once he won the battle, was when he realized he didn’t need it anymore. He was a great dad. “

Waylon Jennings died in 2002 at 64.

“Of course I miss him,” said Shooter. “But that’s not why I cry. If I get emotional, it’s because I feel how important this all is.”

“Diamonds” will be released later this year.

Asked what keeps him going, Shooter replied, “I want everybody to know the guy I know. And I think I’m in a place where I’m in the studio and I’m able to put this out there and people will get it and hear it. So, I feel like that should be my purpose, in a way.”

Fighting childhood obesity, for a healthier, longer life

If fast-food jingles were multiplication tables, perhaps we’d all be good at math. In the meantime, those ads sure are stuck in the brains of kids. The marketing of ultra-processed food, which accounts for more than 60 percent of calories for children, has coincided with a dramatic increase in childhood obesity across the United States. In 1970, about 1 in 20 children were affected by obesity; today, it’s 1 in 5, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    CDC

To be clear, there are multiple causes for the rise, including socioeconomic, environmental and lifestyle factors. But when it comes to diet, figuring out what’s healthy and what is not can be daunting.

“You look at the back of the label and you’re like, ‘Yeah, that’s no good, that’s no good …’ And it’s like, so then, what do you eat some days? It’s scary,” said Heather Wolfe. She and her daughter, Grace, are enrolled in the YMCA’s “Healthy Weight and Your Child” program in Harrisburg, Pa. The program preaches getting healthy the old-fashioned way – eating right and exercising – and focuses on changing the environment and habits of the entire family.

Grace says one thing she’s learned: “Highly-hydrogenated oils, that’s bad for you.”

In an age of powerful new weight loss drugs, including GLP-1s (not yet approved for children under 12), a crucial question remains: how do we prevent future generations from becoming obese in the first place?

In April, FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary (who has since left the agency) said he would like to see Americans eating diets that emphasize protein, fruit and vegetables, healthy fats, and whole grains, and reduce highly-processed foods. “This is not a willpower problem with our nation’s kids,” he said. “This is a problem with us putting highly-addictive, highly-chemicalized food in front of them.”

While he agrees marketers are part of the problem, Makary said, “We’d like to see more information, even on the front of the package of food. We’d like to see schools buying real food instead of ultra-processed food.”

Shayla Mitchell’s daughter, Miracle, began gaining weight during the COVID pandemic. “Pastas and carbs are her thing,” Shayla said. “And she drinks a lot of her calories, too.”

Now, six years later, the YMCA program is helping Miracle’s family work on improving her health.

Physical activity is part of the YMCA’s “Healthy Weight and Your Child” program. CBS News

Miracle says she recognizes the program’s importance: “Healthy foods is for me to lose weight and for me not to lose my life a little bit more faster than I’m supposed to.”

“She wants to be able to eat what her friends are eating,” said Shayla. “She wants to be able to share snacks and share lunch. We really wanted to find a program where she was going to really learn why you can have it, but in moderation.”

Childhood obesity increases the risk of problems later in life, such as diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer.

Harlem Children’s Zone CEP Kwame Owusu-Kesse heads up the “Healthy Harlem” program, which focuses on prevention. “Childhood obesity is one of the most daunting challenges that young people face from a health and wellness perspective,” he said. “What good is this investment in quality education, enrichments and exposures, if there’s a health ticking time bomb awaiting our young people?

“This is about wrapping our arms around a community. That is the secret sauce of the Harlem Children’s Zone. We were designed to be able to hit a critical mass of young people so that you shift culture.”

To address childhood obesity, Owusu-Kesse said, “We’re making sure that our young people are moving. We want to make sure our young people have nutrition knowledge and awareness. And every year we distribute somewhere between 50,000 to 70,000 pounds of fresh produce throughout our Harlem community. So, it’s this marriage of nutrition knowledge, cooking, physical activity for the young person, and the community, that helps change the culture.”

Learning the importance of nutrition knowledge is part of the Harlem Children’s Zone’s “Healthy Harlem” program. CBS News

Both the YMCA and Harlem programs focus on involving the family, schools, friends, and even neighbors.

Twelve-year-old Luqman told us, “I don’t like the french fries, because it has too much salt on it.”

And who taught him about avoiding salt? “My mom. She says if I eat a lot of salt, I can get a heart attack. And I don’t want that to happen.”

Both programs also rely on children becoming agents of their own progress.

Miracle’s mother, Shayla, said, “Portion control is the hardest thing, but it’s one of the things that she knows is super-important. Every now and again I’ll catch her grabbing a measuring cup when she’s making herself cereal in the morning. She’ll pour it into the measuring cup, and then pour it into her bowl.”

All the kids know exactly what they’re supposed to eat – vegetables, salad, fruit – and why. “So I can, like, lose weight and, like, feel better about myself,” said Cameron.

Hassan noted, “I can be getting more stronger, getting more athletic.”

But creating a supportive environment at the home can be tricky. Shayla said, “Getting my husband to kind of go in with that, ’cause that’s Daddy’s little girl. So, anything she asks for, ‘Okay, yeah. You can have it.’ ‘No, honey, she can’t!’ It’s so easy to say yes. It is harder to say no and see the disappointment. But we know that we’re doing it for the overall benefit of her and the entire family.”

And that means family is also there for the triumphs. Shayla said when Miracle was going through her clothes and trying them on, “She was like, ‘Before, I couldn’t fit these jeans.’ I’m like, ‘See? These are the small wins we’re talking about.’ When she doesn’t see it immediately, it’s kind of like a downer for her. But I keep, you know, reassuring her, ‘It’s working. I promise you, it’s working.’”

And for kids like Grace, weight loss is about so much more than the pounds.

“It makes me really feel healthy, and happy,” she said. “You can be more active and, like, go outside and actually play with your friends if you go over to their house, and not just, like, sit on, like, their couch and watching a movie or something. You can actually jump on their trampoline or, like, go outside, play with their dogs and stuff. So, that’s really nice!”

Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library opening in North Dakota Badlands

    June 21, 2026 / 9:28 AM EDT / CBS News

Theodore Roosevelt consistently ranks among the nation’s top five most popular presidents. On this upcoming July 4 holiday, 107 years after his death, T.R. is finally getting his own presidential library – but it’s not where you might think. That library is rising out of the prairie grass in the North Dakota Badlands – a 96,000-square-foot tribute to our 26th president.

It’s as grand as his likeness on Mt. Rushmore, except a lot more subtle, and that’s by design, says architect Craig Dykers. “Nature is transformative here,” he said. “It transformed Theodore Roosevelt, and it will transform new visitors to this library.”

Its gently sloping roof mimics the surrounding buttes, covered in native grasses and walking paths – yes, walking paths on the roof. The hope is they’ll get visitors up and out for a commanding view of Theodore Roosevelt National Park right next door.

“We wanted something that just felt primitive,” said Dykers. “And so, this form emerging from the Earth, it felt like it just arrived from the Earth.”‘ Dykers said.

Inside, a string of skylights will provide almost all the natural illumination the library would ever need, held up by walls made solely of compressed earth.

Everywhere we looked during our privileged sneak-peek back in March, it was hard to tell where nature ended and the library began. Its $450 million price tag is the biggest thing the small town of Medora, North Dakota, has ever experienced.

If you’re wondering why T.R.’s library is way out here instead of his native New York, it’s because were it not for his experiences way out here, Roosevelt said, he never would have been president.

    Simon & Schuster

Edward O’Keefe, CEO of the library, and author of the recent book “The Loves of Theodore Roosevelt: The Women Who Created a President” (Simon & Schuster), said, “Theodore Roosevelt grew up as a sickly, asthmatic child who lived his life through books and imagination. So here he is, 24 years old, on the plains and Badlands of North Dakota, and he’s living the life he only read about in books.”

But the reason he took up residence in the Badlands is hardly a happy one, said O’Keefe: “He was a broken man, in a broken land, and nature was his healer.”

In a tragic twist, Teddy Roosevelt’s mother, Mittie, and his young wife, Alice, both died in the same house, on the same day: Valentine’s Day 1884. “The light has gone out of my life,” Roosevelt wrote in his diary – the date marked by a bold X.

“At the funeral of his wife and mother – it was a double funeral – he was so desolate and so depressed, that they were concerned for his own safety,” said O’Keefe.

After settling his affairs (which included asking his sister to raise his newborn daughter, Alice), he headed West, alone. He’d been to the Dakota Territory just a year prior to hunt a pair of bison – the two that still hang in Roosevelt’s Long Island home to this day.

He dug in, and began living a kind of life many Dakota cowboys thought he wasn’t prepared to live. They were wrong.

O’Keefe said, “I think he had a ‘life wish.’ He realized that no matter how rich you are, no matter how privileged you are, that you don’t know what’s going to happen next. If you want to get something done in this world, if you want to love somebody, if you want to accomplish something, you gotta go.”

And it’s that kind of rugged, raw, and real intellectual journey that the library wants visitors not just to look at and to grasp, but experience. “Library and museum are the two worst descriptions of what the TR Library actually is,” said O’Keefe. “It’s a call to adventure.”

It’s the kind of place that couldn’t have been built even five years ago, because artificial intelligence is such a large part of it. For example, you don’t have to imagine what it’s like to be in T.R.’s boots; you can actually see it.

An exhibit at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library used AI to illustrate how visitors might look in TR’s cowboy garb. CBS News

O’Keefe said, “We have created the world’s first presidential archive in AI. Participants can come here to the TR Library, and have an in-person conversation with an avatar of T.R. You do not come unprepared for a conversation with Theodore Roosevelt; he will have none of it.”

It will be the only presidential library that will have hitching posts for your horse. You can take a nature walk on a mile-long path through the prairie. You can sit by a campfire and hear tall tales of life on the range, and step into his cabin at the Elkhorn Ranch.

But for all the fun, there’s a serious bent, too. He was a man of his times, and his times weren’t always flattering.

“I wasn’t interested in doing a legacy project for Theodore Roosevelt,” said T.R.’s great-great-grandson, Theodore Roosevelt V. “There’s plenty of things named after him, plenty of statues. But the idea of just sort of basking in the glow of somebody and saying ‘This is a great man, let’s all look at him,’ isn’t particularly compelling. Normally, presidential libraries – it’s the principal [reason], the president trying to cement the first chapter of his legacy. In this case, we’ve got a hundred years-plus to be able to look back at his legacy, to really understand what that legacy is, what the lasting impacts were. We get to face those issues head-on.”

Including Roosevelt’s racist views of indigenous peoples, whom he often referred to as savages.

“We had a land blessing out here with the five tribes,” said Roosevelt, “to bless the land and really bring them into the project, so that we were working with them and making sure that their voices were heard, and that we were representing things appropriately.”

The library has taken possession of a statue of Roosevelt that was removed in 2022 from outside the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Critics argued that the message of a White man elevated above both a Native American and an African symbolized racial superiority.

“We are here to preserve the life and legacy of Theodore Roosevelt,” said O’Keefe. “I think it’s important that we eventually do something that contextualizes it appropriately, but not at the opening.”

If the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library has any message, it’s that courage and strength often come from personal tragedy, mis-steps, mistakes, and misunderstandings. As he famously said, it’s being in the arena that counts. And that, more than anything, may be the hindsight the library has to offer.

“He does not like the critic,” said O’Keefe. “He does not like the person on the sidelines pointing out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. He likes the person who tries and fails. That’s a powerful lesson for today. I want kids in particular to come in and understand that if you want to change something in this world, you have got to be the source of that change.”

Charles M. Blow praises men who step up

    June 21, 2026 / 10:25 AM EDT / CBS News

On this Father’s Day, thoughts from contributor Charles Blow about growing up without a dad:

I know what it feels like to miss a father, the hole it leaves in a boy where his dad should be.

My parents split when I was five. The part of my father that the breaking of our family didn’t take, his alcoholism did. I experienced him primarily as an unpredictable apparition who occasionally stopped by in the middle of the night, waking us, reeking of booze, talking loudly and breaking our peace, on his way home from a night out.

But I was lucky. A constellation of other men stepped into the void he left — grandfathers and uncles, neighbors and coaches providing the guidance and correction, the modeling of composure and possibility that boys need, the kind that can only come from a man like the ones they will become.

I have always wanted that for all boys similarly situated: a community of men to bridge their way.

So, when I came across an organization, Son of a Saint, in New Orleans, that does just that — and primarily for boys in even greater need than I was — I was moved.

The organization largely serves boys whose fathers have passed away or been locked away. It was founded in 2011 by Bivian “Sonny” Lee III, whose own father had played for the New Orleans Saints, but died when Sonny was three years old. He has made it his mission to transform the lives of boys like the one he was.

Mentoring boys and young men. Meghan Langley/Son of a Saint

Earlier this month, I visited the group’s headquarters, a beautifully-transformed building in the Bayou St. John neighborhood that serves as something of a community center for the organization and the boys in its care. They have classes (the boys really love the cooking classes), and hold meetings. The group provides not only mentors, but case teams for each boy, ensuring that all his needs are met, from academic to emotional.

When I was there, I observed a wellness class: beaming boys competing in teams, learning concepts about their own mental health, free from any judgement or the strictures of a distorted masculinity that frowns on such things.

I sat down with 16-year-old twin brothers Michael and Robert, who had easy smiles and fidgeted in their chairs the way teenage boys do as they grow into their bodies. They joined the program three years ago, when their dad passed away. They lit up when they told me about the summer camps in the Northeast that the organization paid for them to attend.

I asked each boy I met that day how he celebrated Father’s Day, and almost all of them said they did so with their mentors from the program — the men who stepped into the breach.
