Work inside a small DOJ office that helps indigent immigrants get legal aid stalls after personnel shuffle

    April 23, 2026 / 7:10 PM EDT / CBS News

The Justice Department program that accredits nonprofit organizations to help provide legal aid to low-income immigrants has failed to approve a single new application since March— after its attorneys were quietly reassigned to other offices, sources with direct knowledge of the program told CBS News.

A month ago, the small group of senior attorneys who operated the Recognition and Accreditation program, part of the Justice Department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review, were transferred without explanation to work in nearby immigration courts, CBS News previously reported.

The Recognition and Accreditation program certifies non-attorneys who work for largely faith-based legal advocacy organizations such as Catholic Charities and Jewish Family Services so they are authorized to assist immigrants on everything from naturalization petitions to representation in the Justice Department’s immigration courts.

The reassigned DOJ lawyers were responsible for renewing and approving new applications for the program.

The only two employees who were not transferred are support staff who do not have the legal authority to approve or deny applications. Since the reassignment took place, the office has continued to receive between 40 and 60 new applications per week, one of the sources told CBS News.

The Justice Department last month told CBS News in a statement that the program was not being ended and would continue.

A department spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Rocío Pulido, the director for capacity building at the Resurrection Project in Chicago, told CBS News that the organization not only has its own accredited representatives, but it also trains others to become accredited legal representatives and provides funding for legal aid to other groups statewide.

After CBS News first reported on the gutting of the Justice Department office last month, the group convened an emergency call with its state partners. The cuts to the DOJ program are hampering the work of the Resurrection Project and other groups.

“This severely impacts our ecosystem and our ability to provide legal services,” Pulido said. “In Illinois, we have a huge undocumented immigrant population and there’s just such a demand for immigration legal services. And we can’t meet that demand with attorneys alone.”

Earlier this week, more than 330 nonprofits who participate in the program sent a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and Daren Margolin, the director of the Executive Office for Immigration Review, asking them to restore full functionality to the program.

“In 2025, processing times had already stretched to 6 to 8 months due to understaffing. Now, the abrupt reassignment of all federal staff from the program has created setbacks for legal service providers and EOIR itself, as reported by CBS News,” the groups wrote.

“We urge you to act now to restore the R&A program to full operation,” they added.

    • Phelan’s dismissal, first reported by Reuters, was the latest wartime shakeup at the Pentagon.
    • “He’s a hard charger, and he had some conflicts with some other people, mostly as to building and buying new ships,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “Got to get along, especially in the military, got to get along, you know. And some people liked him, some people didn’t, and that’s usually the truth about everything.”
    • Sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, previously told Reuters that Phelan was dismissed in part because he ‌was moving too slowly to implement reforms to speed shipbuilding and because he had fallen out with key Pentagon leadership.
    • The latest departure comes during a tense ceasefire with Iran, as the U.S. flows more naval assets into the Middle East.
    • The Pentagon has not provided a reason for Phelan’s departure, nor did it say whether it was Phelan’s decision to go.

Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries ripped Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a Fox News Digital interview on Thursday, calling him a “lame duck” after the governor offered to pay for his trip to Florida amid a redistricting push.

Jeffries warned DeSantis he could put Republican seats at risk as the Sunshine State remains in the spotlight of a nationwide gerrymandering battle, with parties reshuffling congressional districts for partisan advantages.

“Ron DeSantis is putting his own congressional delegation in jeopardy, which probably shouldn’t be surprising because all of them, as I understand it, can’t stand the charismatically challenged lame duck governor of Florida,” Jeffries said.

DeSantis extended the invitation to Jeffries at a press conference in Kissimmee, Florida, on Wednesday following Jeffries’ “F around and find out” warning on redistricting.

“Please. Be my guest. I will pay for you to come down to Florida to campaign,” DeSantis told the crowd. “I’ll put you up in the Florida governor’s mansion. We will take you fishing. We’ll do all this stuff. There’s nothing that could be better for Republicans in Florida than to see Jeffries, Hakeem Jeffries, everywhere around this state.”

Jeffries warned DeSantis earlier this week not to follow Texas’s lead, where Republicans pushed a redistricting map to flip up to five Democratic-held seats.

“Our message to Florida Republicans is F around and find out,” Jeffries said. “If they go down the road of a DeSantis dummymander, the Florida Republicans are gonna find themselves in the same situation as Texas Republicans, who are on the run right now. Under no circumstances are Texas Republicans picking up five seats. They’ll be fortunate if they get two or three. While in California, we are going to get all five.”

Multiple states have moved forward with similar redistricting efforts following a push initiated by President Donald Trump.

Jeffries added that the redistricting war is not over yet.

“The Republicans are dummymandering their way into the minority before a single voter casts a ballot because they started this war and we’re going to finish it.”

With the 2026 midterms approaching, both parties hope to win the House by leveraging gerrymandering.

President Trump urged Virginia voters this week to reject the “blatant partisan power grab” in Virginia before voters headed to the polls to vote on the congressional redistricting referendum, led by Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger.

The referendum was passed on Tuesday night, securing Virginia Democrats a major win and increasing the party’s chances in the midterms.

DeSantis called a special session this week to focus on congressional maps that he says will “accurately reflect the population of our state.” Florida’s state constitution bans favoring parties in redistricting.

Eight Democratic-held districts are up for redrawing. Currently, Republicans hold 20 of Florida’s seats, while Democrats hold eight.

A US special forces soldier involved in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was arrested and charged for allegedly betting on that operation, netting him $400,000 in profits.

According to an indictment unsealed Thursday, Master Sgt. Gannon Ken Van Dyke opened an account in late December on Polymarket, one of the best-known prediction markets. He wagered about $32,000 that Maduro would be “out” by January. The bet was a long-shot.

Van Dyke was involved in the planning and execution of Operation Absolute Resolve, prosecutors allege, and had access to classified information before he placed the bet. His winnings, though anonymous, caught the attention of law enforcement almost immediately.

Van Dyke, an active duty solider stationed at Fort Bragg, faces five criminal charges for stealing and misusing confidential government information, theft and fraud. He will make his first court appearance in North Carolina. No attorney has been listed for him on the court docket.

He made 13 bets from December 27 to January 2, the last being hours before the overnight capture. Prosecutors said Van Dyke sent his more than $400,000 in profits to a foreign cryptocurrency vault before he deposited them in an online brokerage account.

A master sergeant in the Army is a senior noncommissioned officer, considered a key tactical leader and technical expert and serving as the principal NCO typically at the Army battalion level. Senior NCOs are often looked to for setting and upholding the standard for more junior soldiers in the unit.

“Those entrusted to safeguard our nation’s secrets have a duty to protect them and our armed service members, and not to use that information for personal financial gain,” said Jay Clayton, US attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Van Dyke was photographed just after the operation – and from when he placed his final bet – on “what appears to be the deck of a ship at sea, at sunrise wearing U.S. military fatigues, and carrying a rifle, standing alongside three other individuals wearing U.S. military fatigues,” court documents say.

Van Dyke profited more than $400,000, prosecutors say. He allegedly moved those winnings to a foreign cryptocurrency vault before he deposited them in an online brokerage account in what prosecutors called an attempt to conceal their origin.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission filed a related complaint against Van Dyke on Thursday, seeking restitution, disgorgement and civil monetary penalties.

CNN reported last month that federal prosecutors were investigating the Maduro trade, according to a person familiar with the matter. The chiefs of the securities and commodity fraud unit at the US attorney’s office in Manhattan met with representatives at Polymarket last month.

After the bets were placed, the US military launched a covert operation that extradited Maduro from the presidential palace in Caracas in an overnight capture while coming under heavy fire. Maduro was transported to New York to face federal drug-trafficking related charges. He has pleaded not guilty.

Polymarket in a post on X said, “When we identified a user trading on classified government information, we referred the matter to the DOJ & cooperated with their investigation. Insider trading has no place on Polymarket. Today’s arrest is proof the system works.”

ABC News first reported Thursday’s arrest.

    Prediction markets face criticism

Trading on prediction markets has exploded the past year, with users now spending a few billion dollars each week on such sites.

Lawmakers in Congress have introduced more than a dozen new bills this year to further regulate prediction markets. Some of the bills, which gained bipartisan support, would stiffen penalties against government officials who engage in insider trading.

Trump told reporters Thursday he is concerned about the growing trend of betting on geopolitical events. Asked about the charges against the US soldier, the president said he was not familiar with the specifics of the incident but compared it to baseball’s all-time hit leader Pete Rose.

“That’s like Pete Rose betting on his own team,” Trump said, referring to the late baseball player who was banned from baseball for gambling.

Pressed on whether he is concerned about betting tied to the war with Iran, Trump said it’s a global issue.

“Well I think that the whole world, unfortunately, has become somewhat of a casino,” Trump said, adding that such betting is happening “all over the world, and every place they’re doing these betting things.”

“Now, I think that I’m not happy with it,” he concluded.

The Trump administration approved Polymarket last year to start offering trades for American customers, but its US-facing site isn’t fully operational yet. The Maduro trades occurred on Polymarket’s highly popular international site.

That site operates out of the reach of US regulations – which is how it’s able to offer markets related to war, which is illegal under federal law. But experts say Americans can easily access the offshore site with a virtual private network, or VPN.

There is a debate in the prediction market industry over the role of insiders in prediction markets. Some experts see these markets as a vehicle for information to flow more freely from insiders to the general public.

Asked about insider trading risks, Polymarket’s CEO told Axios in November it was “super cool” that his platform “creates this financial incentive for people to go and divulge the information to the market,” including insiders.

Polymarket rolled out new rules in March, to “clarify three core categories of prohibited insider trading.”

They banned trades based on information that users were legally required to keep confidential, and trades based on tips from someone with the same obligation. They also said people in “a position of authority or influence” to affect the outcome of an event cannot participate in any related markets.

FIRST ON FOX:Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., is calling on House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to immediately block taxpayer funding for sex change treatment for minors, warning that billions of federal dollars could soon flow to providers like Planned Parenthood.

In a letter penned to Johnson on Thursday afternoon, Hawley emphasized that “time is of the essence,” noting a current federal ban on taxpayer payments to abortion and “trans-treatment” providers is set to expire July 4.

Hawley’s recent attempt to pass a similar ban in the Senate was rejected Wednesday night, putting the responsibility squarely on the House.

“If the House fails to act immediately as part of reconciliation, billions of Federal dollars will go to Planned Parenthood and other medical ‘providers’ for hormones, puberty blockers, and irreversible treatments for minor children,” Hawley wrote, calling the prospect “unconscionable.”

US military developing plans to target Iran’s Strait of Hormuz defenses if ceasefire fails

US forces patrol the Arabian Sea near M/V Touska, on April 20, after the Iranian-flagged vessel attempted to pass through the US naval blockade.

    US Navy

US military officials are developing new plans to target Iran’s capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz in the event the current ceasefire with Iran falls apart, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The options, among several sets of target types under consideration, include strikes with a particular focus on “dynamic targeting” of Iran’s capabilities around the Strait of Hormuz, southern Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, the sources said, describing potential attacks against small fast attack boats, minelaying vessels and other asymmetric assets that have helped Tehran effectively shut down those key waterways and use them as leverage over the US.

That shut down has caused massive ripples in the global economy, threatening to undermine President Donald Trump’s efforts to reduce US inflation and has occurred despite a ceasefire pausing US strikes that began on April 7.

While the military has targeted Iran’s Navy, much of the first month of bombing was focused on targets away from the strait that would allow the US military to strike further inside Iran itself. The new plans call for a much more concentrated bombing campaign around strategic waterways.

CNN has previously reported that a large percentage of the country’s coastal defense missiles remain intact. Iran also has numerous small boats that could be used as platforms to launch attacks on ships, complicating US efforts to open the strait.

Military strikes around the strait, on their own, are unlikely to immediately re-open the waterway, multiple sources, including a senior shipping broker, told CNN.

Ships are anchored near the shoreline on April 22, in Bandar Abbas, Iran. Bandar Abbas is a port city and the capital of Hormozgan Province, along the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.

“Unless you can unequivocally prove that 100% of Iran’s military capability is destroyed or near certainty that the US can mitigate the risk with our capability, it will come down to how badly is [Trump] willing to accept the risk and start pushing ships through the strait,” one source familiar with the military planning said.

The US military could also follow through on Trump’s previous threat to strike dual-use and infrastructure targets, including energy facilities, in an effort to compel Iran to the negotiating table, the sources told CNN. Trump has said the US would resume combat operations in the absence of a diplomatic resolution to the war.

Striking infrastructure targets would represent a controversial escalation in the conflict, some current and former US officials have warned.

Another option developed by military planners is to target individual Iranian military leaders and other “obstructionists” within the regime who US officials have recently suggested are actively undermining negotiations, one of the sources noted. That includes Ahmad Vahidi, who serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the source said.

“Due to operations security, we do not discuss future or hypothetical movements,” a Defense Department official said when asked about target planning. “The U.S. military continues to provide the President options, and all options remain on the table.”

Trump has repeatedly claimed that the Iranian regime is “fractured” after joint US-Israeli operations killed a number of high-ranking officials, including the country’s supreme leader. In a social media post on Thursday, Trump pointed to an apparent split between the IRGC and members of the government who had been engaged in talks with the US as one challenge standing in the way of a diplomatic agreement.

“Iran is having a very hard time figuring out who their leader is! They just don’t know! The infighting is between the ‘Hardliners,’ who have been losing BADLY on the battlefield, and the “Moderates,” who are not very moderate at all (but gaining respect!), is CRAZY!” Trump wrote.

    Majid-Asgaripour/Wana News Agency/Reuters

Additional US strikes would likely also target Iran’s remaining military capabilities, including missiles, launchers and production facilities that were not destroyed in the initial wave of US-Israeli attacks or may have been moved to new strategic positions since the ceasefire started, the sources added.

CNN previously reported that roughly half of Iran’s missile launchers and thousands of one-way attack drones had survived the US bombing campaign, US intelligence had assessed.

Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged during a press briefing that Iran has moved some of its remaining military assets to new locations during the ceasefire and threatened to hit those targets should Iran refuse to agree to a deal.

Trump appears wary of restarting the war with Iran and would prefer a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, CNN has reported. But at the same time, multiple sources acknowledged that Trump’s ceasefire extension is not “indefinite” and the US military is standing ready to resume strikes if called upon to do so.

Trump has continued to voice frustration over Iran’s refusal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which it effectively closed-off to international shipping in response to the opening salvo of US-Israeli strikes.

A man swings from a giant rope swing on the beach as ships are anchored near the shoreline on April 22, 2026 in Bandar Abbas, Iran. Bandar Abbas is a port city and the capital of Hormozgan Province, along the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.

The Trump administration underestimated Iran’s willingness to shut down the strait prior to launching the war – a move that could have likely been “prevented” if the US had positioned military assets nearby at the outset to deter or respond Tehran from doing so, according to two sources familiar with the initial planning for the war.

Failing to prevent Iran from effectively closing the strait during the initial days of the war has ultimately led to the current standoff between the two countries as tankers largely remain unwilling to risk transiting the waterway due to fear of attack.

US forces have also boarded at least three ships, including two in the Indian Ocean, roughly 2,000 miles from the Persian Gulf. The most recent boarding occurred overnight on Wednesday, when US forces boarded a “sanctioned stateless vessel” carrying oil from Iran in the Indian Ocean, the Defense Department announced.

WASHINGTON, April 23 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump announced a drug pricing deal with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN.O) on Thursday, wrapping up the ‌final agreement among the 17 large pharmaceutical companies that negotiated deals with his administration.

Companies including Pfizer (PFE.N), Eli Lilly (LLY.N) and Amgen (AMGN.O) have agreed to slash prices of their medicines for the government’s Medicaid program for low-income people and for cash payers in Trump’s bid to align U.S. costs with those in other wealthy nations.

In exchange for three-year exemptions from tariffs on drug imports, the drugmakers have committed to “most-favored nation” pricing, to sell drugs directly to consumers through a new government platform called TrumpRx.gov, and pledged billions of dollars in U.S. investments.

“I’m thrilled to announce that one of the most respected pharmaceutical companies anywhere in the world, frankly, I know it very well is Regeneron, and it’s agreed to offer their prescription medications at heavily discounted most favored nation prices,” Trump said in the Oval Office.

Regeneron shares ended up 2.6% on the day.

U.S. patients currently pay by far the most for prescription medicines, often nearly three times more than other developed ‌nations. Trump has been pressuring drugmakers to lower their prices to what patients pay elsewhere.

Regeneron has agreed to reduce Medicaid prices for its current and future medications, Trump said at the Oval Office event.

The company has also received approval for its gene therapy Otarmeni for children with a rare type of hearing loss.

The therapy will be made available for free in the U.S., Trump said. The drugmaker has also agreed to sell its cholesterol drug Praluent for $225, he said, down from $537, and will list it on TrumpRx.

The 17 companies account for 86% of the branded pharmaceutical drug market in the United States, said Chris Klomp, chief counselor of the Department of Health and Human Services, who played a leading role in the negotiations. However, more than 90% of medicines sold in the U.S. are generics, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

    • Summary

WASHINGTON, April 23 (Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department’s internal watchdog said on Thursday it would investigate how the department complied with a ‌law requiring the release of investigative files on the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The DOJ’s Office of Inspector General, which operates independently of the department, said it would “evaluate the DOJ’s processes for identifying, redacting, and releasing records in its possession as required by the act.”

The law, passed in November, required the Justice Department to release nearly all of its files related to sex trafficking investigations into Epstein, a financier who cultivated ties with wealthy and powerful figures, and his former associate Ghislaine Maxwell. It included only limited exemptions to shield identities of alleged victims and protect ongoing investigations.

    REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATIC CRITICISM

The review will likely prolong scrutiny of the DOJ’s handling of the Epstein files, an issue that has shadowed Justice Department leadership under President Donald Trump and that the DOJ has appeared eager to move on from after federal prosecutors spent weeks reviewing material. Republican and Democratic lawmakers have criticized the department’s rollout of the files, bemoaning the release of some alleged victims’ identities and redactions in the records that appear to go beyond limited exemptions allowed under the law.

Trump’s dissatisfaction with the issue was one reason he fired former Attorney General Pam Bondi this month.

A Justice Department spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The review will focus on how the department identified and ‌collected records related to Epstein, its process for redacting and withholding material and its efforts to address concerns about some information that was released. The office pledged to release a report on its findings, though such inquiries often take years.

DOJ officials have released more than 3 million pages of records under the law and argued the Trump administration has been more transparent on the issue than its predecessors, though Trump opposed the release of files until shortly before Congress approved the law with bipartisan support. Department officials have said any identification of alleged victims was inadvertent and that lawyers worked on a compressed timetable to review millions of pages of files.

The DOJ’s inspector general, tasked with investigating waste, fraud and misconduct, has faced criticism for a lack of public action as the Trump administration overhauled the department and fired dozens of prosecutors and agents who led investigations into Trump and his allies. The announcement of the Epstein review comes two days after Trump nominated Don Berthiaume, a longtime investigator in the office, to be the permanent inspector general.

The Office of Inspector General previously investigated Epstein’s death in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The scathing 2023 report faulted federal Bureau of Prisons employees for negligence but did not dispute the FBI’s finding that Epstein’s death was a suicide.

Inside the daring 3-hour operation to rescue a group of tourists from a cliff in Australia

    April 23, 2026 2:34 PM EDT / CBS News

A group of tourists became trapped on a cliff along Australia’s east coast when the tide came in during their morning walk on a beach.

The group of seven, which included three children, managed to climb up to a ledge on the cliff as 16-foot waves inched closer by the minute.

“If the waves had come up any higher and washed them off, that’s the worst,” said Pete Collins, the commander of the local emergency services, who added that the tourists had phones on them and were able to call police for help.

First responders attempted a helicopter rescue, but calculated its downdraft would push the stranded group into the water.

Rescuers ended up using ropes and a piece of equipment called the Arizona vortex, which was invented in northern Arizona.

“So if we didn’t have that device, dragging the ropes over the cliff edge would be, you know, it would just absolutely destroy the ropes because of the sharp edges on the rocks,” Collins explained.

The Australian rescue workers who successfully brought the group to safety in the three-hour operation are all unpaid volunteers and said they’ve been practicing for a scenario like this for years.

Nuclear experts warn Iran’s uranium ‘right’ is a myth, say Trump is right to hold firm

    April 23, 2026 3:42pm EDT / Fox News

Expert says Iran retaining any enrichment infrastructure would let it resume its path to nuclear weapons

    By Benjamin Weinthal Fox News

Fox News senior foreign affairs correspondent Greg Palkot reports on President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the Iran conflict and secure the Strait of Hormuz on ‘America Reports.’

Amid the charged exchanges between President Trump and Iran’s fragmented leadership over the regime’s insistence that it retain its nuclear enrichment system, top experts on Iran’s atomic weapons program support the Commander-in-Chief’s ironclad goal to dissolve it.

One of the main sticking points during the intense talks between Tehran and Washington centers on Iran’s claim that the rouge regime has a right to enrich and possess weapon-grade uranium — the material required to build an atomic bomb. The showdown over enriched uranium might be the core deal breaker issue when and if the next round of talks to reach a nuclear agreement goes ahead in Pakistan.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmael Baqaei, vehemently rejected Trump’s demand last week on state-controlled television. “Iran’s enriched uranium is not going to be transferred anywhere under any circumstances,” he declared.

Trump claimed Iran had agreed to “give us back the nuclear dust that’s way underground.” The President terms Iran’s 440 kilograms of enriched uranium as “nuclear dust” after sustained U.S. military strikes on the Iranian facilities that store the country’s stockpile of uranium.

“The United States should insist on a permanent ban of Iranian enrichment and its full dismantlement in negotiations. Iran retaining any enrichment infrastructure in anticipation of the end of a moratorium would allow it to cheat as soon as Trump leaves office and resume its path to nuclear weapons,” Andrea Stricker, deputy director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ nonproliferation program, told Fox News Digital.

Jonathan Ruhe, fellow for American strategy at JINSA, echoed Stricker on the importance of abolishing the Iranian enrichment program. He told Fox News Digital “An acceptable deal would have to embody many of Trump’s stated redlines from his first administration, and from the run-up to last summer’s 12-Day War. This means permanent bans on enrichment, reprocessing and weaponization capability – and equally importantly, full verification of Iran’s compliance with these strictures.”

President Trump withdrew from President Obama’s widely criticized nuclear deal with Iran, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in 2018. Trump said at the time, “In theory, the so-called ‘Iran deal’ was supposed to protect the United States and our allies from the lunacy of an Iranian nuclear bomb, a weapon that will only endanger the survival of the Iranian regime. In fact, the deal allowed Iran to continue enriching uranium and, over time, reach the brink of a nuclear breakout.”

Ruhe said, “The JCPOA failed to ensure IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] inspectors could monitor, and account for, the entirety of Iran’s program and its compliance with the deal. This problem has worsened significantly in the decade since, as Iran systematically stonewalled inspectors.”

He said, “Iran’s negotiators always drag out talks and avoid giving clear answers. They still think time is on their side, with their blockade hurting the global economy and their missile arsenals being dug out and prepared for renewed conflict. Trump should insist on a definitive response from Tehran, and be ready for renewed operations.

IRAN SIGNALS NUCLEAR PROGRESS IN GENEVA AS TRUMP CALLS FOR FULL DISMANTLEMENT

Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, attends a demonstration marking Jerusalem Day in Tehran.(Morteza Nikoubazl/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

“As a cautionary tale: the Obama team first entered nuclear talks with stringent redlines, but then they let Iran call their bluffs, ignore their deadlines and wear down their demands until we ended up with the JCPOA,” Ruhe said.

Iran is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) that obligates it not to enrich uranium for military purposes. However, U.S. and European intelligence reports have documented Iran’s illicit proliferation activities.

Ruhe said, “This regime cynically wants it both ways: they insist the NPT gives the ‘right’ to peaceful enrichment, yet they flout the treaty’s safeguards. By claiming this ‘right,’ they try to make certain core issues non-negotiable. By this logic, they should get to retain enrichment capacity, so the questions then become how much and what the U.S. has to give in return for this supposed sacrifice by Iran.”

He continued that, “As the Nonproliferation Treaty’s name indicates, it’s an agreement to prevent proliferation, not to promote nuclear development.”

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP

Stricker said Rafael Grossi, the head of the IAEA, recently stated that, “it’s fiction that the NPT specifically mentions ‘enrichment’ in its peaceful uses clause. Moreover, the prevailing legal demand from the U.N. Security Council is that Iran stop enriching and come back into compliance with its nonproliferation obligations. For nearly 25 years, the IAEA has been unable to conclude that all of Iran’s nuclear material and activities are devoted to peaceful uses.”

She added that “Iran’s enrichment program began through illicit procurements and covert facilities, under a nuclear weapons program that planned to use enriched uranium as fuel. Iran was clearly stockpiling material for an apparent nuclear weapons breakout.”
