    • Summary
    • Two people were killed in the shooting outside a bar, another was expected to be taken off life support
    • The gunman fired on patrons and pedestrians before police shot and killed him
    • The suspect wore clothing referencing Iran, authorities said

March 2 (Reuters) – Authorities investigating a mass shooting at a bar in Austin, Texas, that killed at least two people said on Monday it was too early to say if the gunman was motivated by the war in Iran.

The body of the gunman, who was killed by police, was seen in a photo obtained by Reuters wearing a shirt with an Iranian flag and “IRAN” spelled out in green, white and red across the front. He was also wearing a sweatshirt that said “Property of Allah” on it, a government official told Reuters.

“Our priority is finding answers and the motives behind this crime,” Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis told reporters during a briefing on Monday, emphasizing it was too early to understand the motives of the suspect.

Alex Doran, acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Antonio field office, said the bureau was investigating any links to terror, but that it was just one of “multiple other avenues” agents are looking at.

“It’s always very difficult to determine what’s in an individual’s mind that leads them to commit this type of violence,” Doran said.

Davis identified the two people killed at the scene of the shooting as Savitha Shan, 24, and Ryder Harrington, 22. She said that another person who was shot was expected to be taken off life support later on Monday.

Law enforcement officials said the suspect had a history ‌of mental health conditions, according to an internal update from the National Counterterrorism Center reviewed by Reuters.

The shooter was identified as Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Senegal, according to the Counterterrorism Center’s update. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the gunman.

The shooting happened outside Buford’s, a popular bar in the West 6th Street stretch of Austin — known as the heart of the city’s music and nightlife area.

Prior to the attack, the shooter drove an SUV multiple times around the block where the bar is located, police said. He then turned on his hazard lights, rolled down the window and opened fire with a pistol on bar patrons, police added.

The shooter then drove west, parked the vehicle and got out, and started firing at pedestrians before police officers shot and killed him at a nearby intersection.

On Sunday, authorities said that 14 other people were injured.

The incident marked the 56th U.S. mass shooting this year and the one with the most victims so far, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people, not including the shooter, are injured or killed by gunfire.

The U.S. had 407 mass shootings last year, according to archive data.

Montana Rep. Ryan Zinke won’t seek reelection, becoming latest GOP retirement

    March 2, 2026 / 3:32 PM EST / CBS News

Washington — Rep. Ryan Zinke of Montana announced Monday he will not run for reelection, becoming the latest Republican to retire ahead of what could be a tough midterm cycle for the party.

“I have made the decision to leave office at the end of my fourth term and not seek re-election,” Zinke said in a letter announcing the move. “I do not take this decision lightly and have informed President Trump, the Governor, and senior leadership of this difficult but necessary decision.”

Zinke cited health issues from his time as a Navy SEAL as the driving factor for his decision, saying he risked missing votes in the future as he recovers from medical treatment.

“While my belief in term limits for elected office is a consideration, I have quietly undergone multiple surgeries since I returned to Congress and unfortunately face several more immediately after leaving office,” he said. “The injuries sustained from a career in Special Operations are not immediately life threatening, but the repair cannot be deferred any longer and recovery will require considerable time with my wife Lola and my family.”

Zinke has represented Montana in Congress since 2015, taking a hiatus from 2017 to 2019 to lead the Department of Interior during President’s Trump’s first term. He resigned from the Cabinet role amid ethics investigations.

More than 30 House Republicans have announced their retirements thus far. In recent months, the party has faced constant hurdles with its increasingly narrow majority.

(New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v.

Supreme Court seems open to loosening law barring marijuana users from owning guns

    March 2, 2026 / 3:38 PM EST / AP

The Supreme Court seemed likely Monday to loosen a federal law that bars marijuana users from owning guns in a case that crossed typical political lines.

A majority of justices appeared to lean toward a narrow ruling in favor of a Texas man who argued he shouldn’t have been charged with a crime just because he owned a gun and smoked marijuana a few times a week.

The Trump administration asked the high court to revive a criminal case against Ali Danial Hemani under a law that bans all illegal drug users from owning guns. But both liberal and conservative justices seemed skeptical.

“What is the government’s evidence that using marijuana a couple of times a week makes someone dangerous?” said conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

The Trump administration has asked the court to strike down other gun control laws in the past, but Principal Deputy Solicitor General Sarah Harris defended the illegal drug user law as a reasonable measure to keep firearms from potentially dangerous people.

Justice Neil Gorsuch, though, pointed out that a growing number of states have legalized cannabis, though it remains illegal on a federal level. “What do we do with the fact that marijuana is sort of illegal and sort of isn’t, and that the federal government itself is conflicted on this?” Gorsuch said.

He was part of the conservative majority court that expanded gun rights with a landmark case in 2022 known as New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen. The court said that any gun laws must have a strong grounding in the nation’s historical traditions. Liberal-leaning Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said a ban on firearms for cannabis users didn’t seem to have strong historical roots. “I think your argument sort of falls apart under the Bruen test,” she said.

The government pointed to historical laws that barred “habitual drunkards” from having guns, calling that clear historical evidence in favor of the law.

But an attorney for Hemani, Erin Murphy, said those laws were for extreme cases of people who were almost continuously drunk.

There are many modern cannabis users who regularly take gummies as sleep aids, for example, who are very capable of making safe decisions about firearms, Murphy said.

The case made for some unusual political alliances. The American Civil Liberties Union and the National Rifle Association both supported Hemani’s case, as did cannabis legalization groups like NORML. On the other side were gun-safety groups like Everytown, which usually finds itself on the other side of the Trump administration on Second Amendment issues.

Some justices, however, appeared concerned that a ruling for Hemani could allow more weapon possession by people who use more dangerous drugs, or require courts to frequently make in-depth considerations about the level of dangerousness presented by a given substance.

“It just seems to me that this takes a fairly cavalier approach to the necessary consideration of expertise and the judgments we leave to Congress and the executive branch,” Chief Justice John Roberts said.

The court is expected to decide the case by the end of June.

Videos of Bill and Hillary Clinton’s Epstein testimony released by House committee

    March 2, 2026 / 6:40 PM EST / CBS News

Washington — The House Oversight Committee on Monday released video of last week’s depositions with former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as part of its investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Hillary Clinton testified Thursday, while Bill Clinton appeared before the committee a day later.

The video of Bill Clinton’s testimony is 4 hours and 33 minutes. Hillary Clinton’s testimony is 4 hours and 35 minutes.

The depositions took place behind closed doors in Chappaqua, New York, the Clintons’ hometown. It capped what Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, the Republican chairman of the committee, described as a lengthy effort to secure testimony from the couple about their knowledge of Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is in prison on sex trafficking charges.

The Clintons have repeatedly said that they had no knowledge of Epstein or Maxwell’s crimes. Both Clintons released their opening statements to the committee before their testimony.

The video shows the former president strayed from his prepared remarks during the deposition. He said there’s a photo of him and his wife shaking hands with Epstein during a photo line for a White House Historical Association fundraiser in 1993.

“Neither she nor I remembered shaking his hand all those years ago,” he said, chiding the committee for bringing in his wife for questioning. “So I don’t think that was right. On the other hand, I do think you should be talking to me. I think you should have called me. I did take those plane trips with him, and you have a right to ask those questions.”

Hillary Clinton told the committee she did not recall ever meeting Epstein, but noted that in preparation for the testimony she was made aware that he had attended an event at the White House.

“I knew nothing about him,” she said.

During his questioning, Bill Clinton said his first memory of meeting Epstein was in 2002 during a flight he took on his plane. The former president testified that he took four or five flights on Epstein’s plane to Asia, Africa and northern Europe for his philanthropic work through the Clinton Foundation. He was also once offered a ride from Florida to New York, though he and Epstein were in Florida for different reasons, he said. Hillary Clinton called it “unfortunate” that her husband had flown on Epstein’s plane and said she wishes he hadn’t done so.

Bill Clinton’s relationship with Epstein ended in 2003, he said, because there were other donors whom Bill Clinton knew better and who cared more about the foundation’s work.

“I thought Mr. Epstein was an interesting man, but I didn’t think he was really interested in what I was doing,” he testified, adding that he tries not to overstay his welcome with donors.

He said it had been 10 or 12 years since he last saw Maxwell, who had been in a relationship with a mutual friend.

Bill Clinton confirmed he wrote a letter to Epstein that was included in a book for the disgraced financier’s 50th birthday. He said he did not remember why he contributed, but said it was likely at the request of his staff. Bill Clinton was also shown a copy of a get-well-soon note he apparently wrote to Epstein’s mother in 1995. The former president said it looked like his handwriting, but he did not recall writing it or ever meeting Epstein’s family.

Bill Clinton denied ever having sexual activity with anyone introduced to him by Maxwell, visiting Epstein’s private island in the Virgin Islands, having an interest in underage girls or ever witnessing any sexual abuse during his overseas trips on Epstein’s plane.

Bill Clinton also recounted a conversation he had with President Trump at a golf fundraiser in the early 2000s. Bill Clinton said he remembered Mr. Trump bringing up Epstein unprompted, possibly because he knew the former president had flown on Epstein’s plane. Bill Clinton said he did not think Mr. Trump was implying anything sexual.

“And he said, ‘You know, we had some great times together over the years, but we fell out all because of a real estate deal.’ And he said, ‘I’m sorry it happened.’ That’s all.”

Throughout her testimony, the former secretary of state was engaged in a couple heated exchanges with Republican congresswomen.

One instance stemmed from GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert leaking a photo of the deposition to a right-wing commentator, a violation of the ground rules for the deposition. A lawyer for Hillary Clinton interjected questioning to note the leak of the photo.

“I’m done with this! If you guys are doing that, I am done. You can hold me in contempt from now until the cows come home. This is just typical behavior,” Hillary Clinton said, getting up from her seat. “I’m done for now.”

The deposition then took a brief pause.

In a later moment, Hillary Clinton sparred with Rep. Nancy Mace when the South Carolina Republican asked how she knew Howard Lutnick, who is now Mr. Trump’s Commerce secretary. The exchange spiraled as Hillary Clinton recalled Lutnick leading financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, which lost hundreds of employees in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. At the time, she was a New York senator.

“I know that,” Mace is heard saying.

“You asked the question, I’m going to answer your question,” Hillary Clinton shot back. “This was what I spent my time doing.”

Mace said there’s an email from Lutnick to Epstein about an “intimate event” for Hillary Clinton at Cantor Fitzgerald and accused Hillary Clinton of trying to “obfuscate” by denying that she ever tried to get money from Epstein.

“You want to yell at me, that’s fine, but I’ll yell right back,” Mace said.

Transcripts of the depositions have yet to be released.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

US Supreme Court blocks California privacy protections for transgender students

March 2 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court blocked on Monday a series of California laws that can limit the sharing of information with parents about the gender identity of transgender public school students without the child’s permission, handing a victory to Christian parents who challenged these protections.

The justices granted an emergency request ‌by the challengers to reinstate a judge’s ruling that the privacy and anti-discrimination measures at issue undermined their religious and parental rights under the U.S. Constitution’s First and 14th Amendments, while litigation continues. A federal appeals court had put that ruling on hold.

The Supreme Court’s three liberal justices dissented from Monday’s decision.

The California lawsuit is one of many disputes concerning efforts to protect the privacy of transgender and gender-nonconforming students playing out across the United States.

The Supreme Court is also considering whether to take up a lawsuit against a Massachusetts public school district over actions by teachers and officials to support the gender identity of students. The court in 2024 turned away similar challenges in Wisconsin and Maryland.

The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, has been asked repeatedly to rule on efforts by President Donald Trump’s administration and Republican-led states to restrict the rights of transgender people.

The Supreme Court last year upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors and also let Trump ban transgender people from the military. It heard arguments on January 13 concerning state laws in Idaho and West Virginia banning transgender athletes from female sports teams, with the conservative justices appearing ready to uphold those restrictions.

California law contains several provisions, including the right to privacy under the state constitution, that the state has said could apply when transgender students object to having their gender identities disclosed to their parents or guardians, sometimes out of fear of hostility, rejection or even violence.

No warning, no siren: Six US service members killed in Iranian strike that hit makeshift operations center in Kuwait

    2026-03-02T21:43:08.246Z / CNN Politics

A video geolocated by CNN shows smoke rising from an American facility at the Port of Shuaiba on Sunday.

    Social Media

The first US service members to die in the conflict between the US and Iran were killed by a direct Iranian strike on a makeshift operations center at a civilian port in Kuwait on Sunday morning local time, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.

The death toll from that event at the Shuaiba port has since risen to six, US Central Command announced on Monday afternoon, after the remains of two additional service members were recovered.

Earlier Monday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the strike that killed the service members hit a “tactical operation center that was fortified,” but there was “one” projectile that made it through air defenses.CNN previously reported the event was a suspected drone strike.

The source familiar said it was a direct hit just after 9 a.m. local time, on the center of the building they described as a triple-wide trailer with office space inside. The attack came quickly and with no warning or sirens to alert troops to evacuate or get into a bunker, the source said. Hours after the strike, fire was still smoldering in some parts of the building, the source described – the inside of the makeshift operations center blackened and the walls blown outwards from the blast, some parts peeling away from the building.

A satellite image taken Sunday morning showed a building at the port on fire and dark smoke billowing into the sky.

This pairing of images shows the location where American service members were killed in Kuwait. The left images was taken on June 26, 2025. The image on the right was taken on March 1, 2026.

    Planet Labs PBC

US Central Command initially said that three service members were killed but didn’t specify the location of the strike. There were dozens of people at the site, the source said, but the final service members who were declared killed in action were unaccounted for when the dust settled. With the building still burning in some places, it took time to recover the remaining service members, the source said.

The CENTCOM release on Monday also said a facility was struck “during Iran’s initial attacks.” The military has not identified the troops killed on Sunday, as families are still being notified.

CENTCOM’s statement said US forces “recently recovered the remains of two previously unaccounted for service members” from the facility that was struck.

The six casualties are the first killed in action in the military operation against Iran that began early Saturday Eastern standard time, dubbed Operation Epic Fury. Hegseth and President Donald Trump have both said that more casualties are likely. A CENTCOM spokesperson said Monday that 18 troops have been seriously wounded throughout the US military’s operation.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine called the service members killed in action “the best that our nation has to offer” and “true examples of what selfless service means.”

“Our deepest and heartfelt condolences are with their families, their friends, and their units,” he said. “We grieve with you and we will never forget you.”

The Democratic National Committee is focusing on five cities to potentially host the party’s next presidential nominating convention in 2028, while officials have also decided against holding a similarly styled event ahead of this fall’s midterm elections.

The decision comes as Republicans have moved towards holding a midterm convention later this year in a twist from tradition that has been championed by the leader of the right, President Trump.

CBS News has learned the DNC will announce Monday afternoon that its next convention will be held from Aug. 7 to Aug. 10 in 2028, with Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver and Philadelphia in the running for the coveted role of host city.

Even as Democrats look ahead to the next presidential election where they are aiming to retake the White House from Republicans, the party’s decision to avoid dedicating attention and resources to a potentially costly midterm convention is being viewed internally as one that could give candidates on the left an advantage over the GOP this fall. The DNC had initially signaled last year that it would consider holding a midterm convention in 2026.

“Republicans were baited into wasting time and money on a midterm convention that will sink their swing-seat candidates by tying them directly to Trump’s wildly unpopular policies,” DNC executive director Roger Lau said in a statement about the decision. “Meanwhile the DNC has put resources where they’re needed most and doubled down on the playbook that helped our candidates flip seats up and down the ballot in 2025.”

In recent months, Mr. Trump has publicly embraced holding a midterm-focused event that could bring the GOP national attention as it tries to hold on to a narrow majority in the House and faces the long-shot risk of losing the Senate this fall.

Last September, Mr. Trump wrote in a social media post, “The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024”

“It will be quite the Event, and very exciting!” Mr. Trump added.

Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kiersten Pels also countered in a text message Monday that “the DNC can’t afford to hold a midterm convention, financially or politically.”

“They don’t have the money, and they certainly don’t have the courage to put their radical, failing agenda on full display for voters to reject,” Pels said.

Party conventions in presidential years are a major fixture of focusing national attention on leading party candidates as they try to win over voters. For both major parties, the widely broadcast conventions are enormous undertakings that highlight not only their current standard bearers, but also provide a stage for up-and-coming or little-known leaders to introduce themselves to a large audience.

The impact of a midterm convention in this day and age of politics is an open question.

The stakes for the two major parties in the midterms are high. If Democrats retake control of the House, they could curtail or block much of Mr. Trump’s agenda during the final two years of his presidency.

Republicans came away from the 2024 presidential election with unified control of Washington and a lengthy window to lean in on their power to enact change that could impact voters’ decisions at the ballot box.

The party of the incumbent president often suffers losses in a midterm cycle, but there are already clear variables this year that differ from the dynamics the GOP faced in 2018, when the party lost control of the House during Mr. Trump’s first midterm election in his first administration.

Democrats took back control of the House in the 2018 midterms by netting around 40 seats, compared to their performance two years before. Since then, margins between Republicans and Democrats have narrowed in the House, and the map of competitive House seats in 2026 could be thin, depending on the political environment this fall.

Republican candidates also appear more willing to align themselves to Mr. Trump than in 2018, when some GOP incumbents tried to distance themselves from the man in the White House.

Federal campaign finance records also show that the Republican National Committee has a significant financial advantage over the DNC. Party finances through the end of January show that the RNC had close to $102 million in the bank while the DNC carried around $15 million in cash on hand and over $17 million in debt.

Yet Democrats’ election performance in 2025, where they easily won races for governor in New Jersey and Virginia, has helped give the left energy and some hope that they may be on track for wide-ranging wins in November.

The party’s choices between now and 2028 are being closely watched as they look to overcome the setbacks that troubled the party during the Biden era and led to election losses in 2024.

Democrats’ potential 2028 convention cities also provide an interesting signal of the argument it may be trying to make with voters in a few years. Chicago hosted the DNC’s 2024 convention, while Boston, Denver and Philadelphia — in the coveted battleground of Pennsylvania — have held the same role for the party during recent presidential cycles over the last 22 years.

Atlanta would send a different message, given Georgia’s rising prominence as a closely contested state between Republicans and Democrats. It’s also become an even more notable flashpoint in American politics after the FBI executed a search warrant in late January at an elections office in Georgia’s Fulton County.

The search stemmed from alleged “deficiencies or defects” involving the 2020 presidential election, despite the state’s chief GOP election official long defending the integrity of his state’s vote and the fairness of the outcome and there being no evidence of decisive voter fraud.

It is unclear when the DNC will decide which city will get to hold the 2028 convention.

“The DNC is proud to be moving forward with our 2028 Democratic National Convention plans, another critical step toward retaking the White House and finally putting an end to Republicans’ betrayal of working families,” party chairman Ken Martin said in a statement.
