By Kara Scannell, Holmes Lybrand | 17

Lobbyist tied to pardon from Trump charged with attempted extortion

By Kara Scannell, Holmes Lybrand | 17 min ago | PUBLISHED Mar 14, 2026, 7:42 PM ET

Federal prosecutors charged a lobbyist with trying to extort a former client and his son to recover half a million dollars in debt, according to court filings.

Joshua Nass, a lobbyist who worked to obtain a client’s pardon from President Donald Trump, was arrested Friday outside his hotel in New York on charges of attempted extortion.

Nass, of South Carolina, appeared before a judge in federal court in Brooklyn on Saturday and was released on a $5 million bond. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Neither Nass nor his attorney could immediately be reached for comment.

The FBI affidavit and court filings do not identify the name of the former client Nass allegedly tried to extort.

According to an FBI affidavit, in January, Nass contacted an individual, who is cooperating with federal authorities, to threaten and physically harm a former client and the client’s son to recover $500,000 in owed fees.

Nass’ former client agreed to pay $600,000 for lobbying services, according to court filings. The former client’s son transferred $100,000 but said he was unable to come up with the rest of the money.

According to reports filed under the Lobbying Disclosure Act, the only payment Nass received as a lobbyist in 2025 for $100,000 was from Joseph Schwartz, a former nursing home executive who was convicted of tax crimes and later pardoned by Trump. Nass had been paid $100,000 to pursue clemency for Schwartz, who began serving his sentence in August before being pardoned by Trump in November. Court filings, however, do not name Nass’ alleged victims.

In late January, Nass and the informant, who communicated in English and Russian, discussed approaching the former client’s son, according to text messages included in court filings.

Initially they discussed having the informant approach the former client’s son at his home to intimidate him into paying the debt.

“Let’s say – give me the address, let me see and, er er listen, if I need to sock him a few times,” the informant said.

Nass replied, according to the court filing, “I will give you the right to do anything and everything.”

After the informant falsely told Nass that he went to the son’s home to collect the debt but was rebuffed, Nass allegedly escalated the threat.

Nass agreed to pay the informant $15,000 if he would physically assault the former client’s son, potentially by forcing him into a car from his home, according to the affidavit. Nass offered to pay an additional $5,000 for any additional men the informant needed, according to the affidavit.

If the former client’s son refused to pay, Nass allegedly told the informant that he did not want him to behave “like a human being with” the son.

Nass, who runs a political consulting firm called Merkava Strategies, bills himself as a problem solver to help people navigate “complex political, regulatory, and reputational environments.”

Former U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema admits romance with her security guard as she fights his ex-wife’s lawsuit

    March 14, 2026 / 2:18 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Former U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema acknowledges having a romantic relationship with a member of her security detail that began while she was a lawmaker, according to legal documents. But she also contends she shouldn’t be subject to a lawsuit by the man’s ex-wife, who blames Sinema for the marriage ending.

The North Carolina federal court litigation seeks financial damages from Sinema, who represented Arizona in the U.S. House and later the Senate for one term that ended early last year.

Heather Ammel contends in a lawsuit that she and husband Matthew had “a good and loving marriage” and “genuine love and affection” existed between them before Sinema interfered, pursuing him despite knowing he was married.

In a signed March 7 declaration attached to a lawsuit response filed this week, Sinema said her relationship with Matthew Ammel “became romantic and intimate” at the end of May 2024 and “physically intimate” over the next several months in California, New York, Colorado, Arizona and Washington, D.C. The Ammels separated in November 2024, the lawsuit said.

North Carolina is one of a handful of states that allow jilted spouses to sue for “alienation of affection” to seek damages from a third party responsible for the breakup of their marriage.

Sinema’s declaration rejects allegations by Heather Ammel that Sinema made phone calls and sent internet communications to her husband with the knowledge that he was physically present in North Carolina and at times with his wife and the couple’s children.

Sinema sent Matthew Ammel a message while he was in North Carolina after he had already found a new place to live and “when the marriage was already over,” Sinema’s attorney Steven Epstein wrote in a filing to dismiss the lawsuit.

Sinema’s “conduct related to her romantic relationship with Mr. Ammel does not connect her to North Carolina in a meaningful way,” Epstein wrote Thursday, adding that no jury would believe that the one message “had any bearing on the destruction of marital love and affection.”

Sinema’s head of security hired Ammel after he retired from the Army in 2022, according to the lawsuit. In early 2024, Heather Ammel discovered messages between Sinema and her husband on the Signal messaging app that were of “romantic and lascivious natures.” That summer, Matthew Ammel stopped wearing his wedding ring and Sinema gave him a job on her Senate staff while he continued to work as her bodyguard, the lawsuit alleges.

Sinema also paid for psychedelic treatment for Ammel, who has struggled with post-traumatic stress, substance abuse and traumatic brain injuries tied to his military deployments in Afghanistan and the Middle East, according to the lawsuit.

The complaint alleges that Sinema suggested that he should bring MDMA on a work trip “so that she could guide him through a psychedelic experience.”

According to the lawsuit, the affair lasted between the fall of 2023 and the end of 2024, and the pair allegedly went to numerous concerts together, including Green Day, Taylor Swift and U2.

The lawsuit was initially filed late last year in North Carolina state court, but it was moved to federal court in January.

Sinema declined to seek Senate reelection in 2024 following a term in which she left the Democratic Party to become an independent. She now works for a Washington-based legal and lobbying firm.

Pope Leo moves into papal residence eschewed by Pope Francis

    March 14, 2026 / 1:06 PM EDT / AFP

Ten months after taking office, Pope Leo XIV on Saturday finally moved into his apartments in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, a historic papal residence that his predecessor had eschewed.

“This afternoon, Pope Leo XIV will take possession of the apartment in the Apostolic Palace, moving, with his closest collaborators, into the spaces previously used by his predecessors,” the Vatican said in a statement.

Leo, the first U..S pope, decided to move into the apartments in the wake of his May 8, 2025, election as head of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

But after being abandoned under the late Pope Francis, who chose a more modest dwelling elsewhere in the Vatican, they required extensive renovation.

During the interim, the 70-year-old Leo continued staying at the Palace of the Holy Office, near the Vatican, where he had lived as a cardinal.

The large apartment he has moved into includes bedrooms, a chapel, a vestibule, a library, an office, a dining room and a room from which the pontiff recites the Angelus prayer every Sunday through a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square.

Francis had shocked traditionalists when he decided on his election in 2013 to live in a simple apartment in the Santa Marta guesthouse in the Vatican, where he remained until death.

The gesture was acclaimed by supporters of a humble pope but attracted criticism from conservatives, who accused him of divesting the papacy of a sacred element.

The papal apartments are in the heart of the Apostolic Palace, which houses the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Library and the Secretary of State, the central hub of the Holy See’s administration.

Leo has also returned to the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, outside Rome, that Francis declined to use.

Trump thanks TSA agents going to work but “not being paid” after first missed paycheck amid partial government shutdown

    March 14, 2026 / 12:12 PM EDT / CBS News

President Trump thanked TSA agents for going to work but “not being paid” amid an ongoing partial government shutdown, which has seen agents quitting and absences doubling.

Mr. Trump blamed the radical left in a social media post Saturday for refusing “to honor the deal that was approved and voted on in Congress.” He directed portions of the post to TSA agents and said, “Keep fighting for the USA. GO TO WORK! I promise that I will never forget you!!!

His post comes hours after the first full missed paycheck for TSA agents was expected Friday.

Roughly 50,000 transportation security officers are required to work without pay during the Department of Homeland Security funding lapse, which began on February 14. CBS News reported unscheduled absences among airport security officers have more than doubled since then, with more than 300 employees leaving the agency.

DHS officials worry that the longer the shutdown lasts, the greater the risk that more TSA employees will leave, worsening staffing shortages beyond the immediate crisis.

“Our kids, our families, houses — everything is at stake at this moment,” one officer told CBS News Atlanta. “We are literally drowning in silence, and the world doesn’t even know it.”

Dozens of airports around the country have reported long lines at security. The TSA temporarily closed one security checkpoint at Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday. There were long lines reported at Houston Hobby and New Orleans airports last weekend.

In some cases, the strain has led to frustrations: Federal prosecutors charged a California man who allegedly became violent earlier in the week at Dallas Love Field airport.

Idress Vinay Solomon, 33, of Oakland, is accused of assaulting a federal officer, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas. Solomon allegedly punched TSA and Dallas police officers after failing an identity check at the security checkpoint.

“Violent conduct perpetrated against TSA and law enforcement officers will never be tolerated in the Northern District of Texas,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould. “We will prosecute such offenses to the fullest extent to seek justice for the victims here and to deter others from resorting to aggressive attacks against officers responsible for ensuring the public’s safety while traveling.”

Trump administration must provide Kennedy Center renovation plans to board members before key closure vote, judge rules

Published Mar 14, 2026, 3:22 PM ET | CNN Politics

A slew of documents related to President Donald Trump’s efforts to close and extensively renovate the Kennedy Center must be turned over to a Democratic congresswoman who sits on the center’s board ahead of a Monday vote on the president’s plan, a federal judge has ruled.

US District Judge Christopher Cooper said in a lengthy decision Saturday that Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty has a right to the information so she can meaningfully participate in the upcoming White House meeting, during which the storied performing arts center is poised to approve the plan by Trump, who last year installed himself as its chair.

“A project of this salience and magnitude — which threatens to involve at least some demolition and reconstruction of a major national memorial and active performing arts theater — does not happen overnight,” Cooper wrote. “If it is the case that many external advisors and Board members have been consulted, the financing is set, and already-made decisions are currently being implemented on-site, there must be some concrete information to share with the full Board, including Beatty.”

Trump administration lawyers had argued that the renovation plans were “preliminary” and not “finalized,” suggesting that the president would be involved in fine-tuning details for the closure until the last minute.

Cooper said that argument “borders on preposterous.”

Beatty, an ex-officio member of the Kennedy Center’s board, is challenging the legality of Trump’s plan to temporarily close the building. She had also asked Cooper to intervene to ensure she had a right to vote during Monday’s meeting, contending that the board’s decision to change its rules last year to prohibit ex-officio members from casting a vote was unlawful and therefore must be blocked.

Though Cooper agreed that the rule change “is likely void,” he stopped short of also ordering officials to permit Beatty to cast a vote next week, saying she had not shown how her challenge to that change months after it occurred warranted his intervention now.

“The marginal harm to her from not voting is much less, as she will be able to lodge her objections on the record and have the opportunity to persuade her colleagues of her position,” he wrote.

Beatty had filed a two-pronged lawsuit against Trump and other appointed members of the board, and Saturday’s ruling addresses the immediate concern of the upcoming board meeting.

“No president has the authority to shut Congress out of the governance of the Kennedy Center, much less unilaterally rename or demolish it. We will not stand by while an important part of our national heritage is jeopardized, and I intend to make that clear at next week’s board meeting,” she said in a statement moments after the judge’s ruling.

The congresswoman has also asked the judge to halt the center’s planned closure until it receives congressional approval.

The renovations announced by Trump last month mark his latest effort to overhaul the center and place his mark on culture in the nation’s capital. He gutted the board and installed loyalists who elected him chair and voted in December to rename the venue the “Trump Kennedy Center” — a move Beatty is challenging in court.

But the changes have also led to slumping ticket sales and a dwindling number of performances as prominent artists have canceled their appearances — which some saw as driving the desire to temporarily close.

Ahead of the Monday White House meeting, Trump announced that Richard Grenell, a longtime ally who has been serving as the center’s president, would be replaced by Matt Floca, its current vice president of facilities operations, after the president became frustrated with a slew of negative headlines about his revamp of the arts institution, multiple sources told CNN.

Trump also posted a pair of renderings of what he said the “new, highly improved” building will look like on Friday afternoon, both actions making clear that the project is still top of mind despite global conflicts.

Beatty’s lawsuit includes sworn declarations from experts in performing arts center management who warn about significant impacts to bookings, donors and staff should the two-year closure, which Trump says will start in July, take effect.

Deborah Borda, the president emerita of the New York Philharmonic, oversaw major renovations and construction at multiple major venues, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and David Geffen Hall in New York City.

“In my professional judgment, the harms from a closure of the Kennedy Center at the scale and on the timeline announced are severe, immediate, and cannot be quickly reversed,” Borda said in a sworn declaration.

She added: “The visiting performers who are removed from the schedule will find alternative venues and will not return quickly. The staff who depart will be difficult to replace. The donors who redirect their giving will develop new institutional loyalties. The audiences who fall out of the habit of attending will … require years of effort and investment to recover.”

And Mallory Miller, the Kennedy Center’s former assistant manager of dance programming, described the long-cultivated relationships her former team has worked to manage with ballet companies.

Those relationships, she said, “are not abstractions. They are relationships developed over many years by experienced arts administrators who understood those companies’ artistic needs, earned the trust of their directors and managers, and could credibly represent the Kennedy Center as a committed long-term partner.”

Miller warned that the closure “will sever whatever goodwill remains and will likely be understood by those companies as a definitive rupture, not a temporary pause.”

FCC chair threatens news networks’ licenses amid Trump’s criticism of Iran war coverage

    March 14, 2026 / 3:27 PM EDT / CBS News

[Federal Communications Commission] Chair Brendan Carr threatened to revoke broadcast licenses on Saturday, echoing criticism from President Trump over news networks’ coverage of the U.S.-Israeli war in Iran.

“Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions – also known as the fake news – have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up,” Carr [said on social media], in part. “The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not.”

The FCC chair did not name specific networks or cite any stories he believes were reported incorrectly. But Carr’s post referenced a Saturday morning [Truth Social]post from the president about five U.S. tanker aircraft in Saudi Arabia.

“Four of the five had virtually no damage, and are already back in service,” Mr. Trump wrote. “None were destroyed, or close to that, as the Fake News said in headlines.”

Mr. Trump has repeatedly accused the media of falsely reporting on the war in Iran. In September 2025, the president said that networks covering him negatively [should “maybe” have their licenses revoked]. He said such a decision would “be up to” Carr, whom he appointed earlier that year.

Hours after Carr told right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson that comments by late-night host[Jimmy Kimmel]about the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination were “a very, very serious issue right now for Disney,” Kimmel’s show was pulled from air in mid-September. Mr. Trump praised ABC, which airs the program, for the decision. “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” [resumed nearly a week] later.

Some conservatives, including Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, [said Carr went too far]. However, the president defended him.

“I think Brendan Carr is doing a great job,” the president told reporters.

In August, Mr. Trump said NBC and ABC “give me 97% BAD STORIES,” and he would be “totally in favor” of revoking their FCC licenses.

The FCC, an independent agency, issues eight-year licenses to individual broadcast stations, many of which are owned and operated by television networks. It does not license TV networks such as CBS, NBC, ABC or Fox.

On its website, the agency says the “First Amendment and the Communications Act expressly prohibit the Commission from censoring broadcast matter.” It also states that the commission’s role in overseeing content on the air waves “is very limited.” The FCC has traditionally exerted limited influence over the content aired by TV networks, partly due to[First Amendment protections].
