Trump predicted Israel–Lebanon leaders would speak ‘tomorrow’ — Beirut swiftly shut it down

Lebanon demands a ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal before any negotiations as battles rage near Bint Jbeil

Israeli military strikes Hezbollah targets in Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces said on Saturday, April 11, that “In the last 24 hours, the IDF struck more than 200 Hezbollah terror targets in Lebanon.”

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun will not speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for now, a Lebanese official told Fox News Digital, dealing a setback to U.S. efforts to broker direct contact between the two countries as fighting continues across southern Lebanon.

The development came after President Donald Trump said late Wednesday that the two leaders could speak for the first time in decades.

“We are trying to create a little breathing room,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that the leaders of Israel and Lebanon had not spoken in some 34 years and saying, “It will happen tomorrow.”

But Lebanese officials quickly pushed back. A senior Lebanese official told Fox News Digital that no call between Aoun and Netanyahu is likely before a ceasefire is reached.

The official said there is mounting domestic pressure on Lebanon’s government not to deepen contacts with Israel while fighting continues, especially because many in Lebanon believe the government has already begun negotiations without receiving anything in return.

The lack of a ceasefire or any tangible concession has made public opinion increasingly important, he explained.

Three Lebanese officials told Reuters that Aoun has no plans to speak with Netanyahu in the near future. Two of the officials said Lebanon’s embassy in Washington conveyed that position to the Trump administration before Aoun held a phone call Thursday with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

In a brief statement after the call, Lebanon’s presidency said Aoun thanked Rubio for U.S. efforts to secure a ceasefire.

Shortly afterward, Lebanon’s presidency said Aoun also spoke by phone with Trump.

According to the Lebanese presidency official X account, Aoun thanked Trump for his efforts to secure a ceasefire in Lebanon and achieve what it described as a lasting peace and stability that could pave the way for a broader regional peace process.

The presidency said Aoun urged Trump to continue those efforts in order to stop the fighting as quickly as possible.

Trump, according to the Lebanese readout, voiced support for Aoun and Lebanon and said he remained committed to securing a ceasefire as soon as possible.

Lebanon has made clear it wants a ceasefire before any direct negotiations with Israel.

“A ceasefire is the natural entry point for direct negotiations,” Aoun said Thursday.

Aoun, who previously served as commander of Lebanon’s U.S.-backed armed forces before becoming president last year, said an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon would be a necessary first step before Lebanese troops could fully deploy to the border region.

The diplomatic dispute comes as the White House presses for a broader deal to end the regional war that erupted after Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group entered the conflict on March 2 in support of Tehran.

Hezbollah’s intervention opened a new front in Lebanon just 15 months after the last major Israel-Hezbollah war.

Pakistan, which helped mediate the April 8 ceasefire between Israel and Iran, said ending the fighting in Lebanon is essential to preserving that agreement.

“Peace in Lebanon is essential for peace talks,” Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman Tahir Andrabi said.

The Israeli security cabinet met late Wednesday to discuss a possible ceasefire in Lebanon, according to Israeli media.

Israeli officials have signaled openness to negotiations, but they are also insisting on continuing military operations until Hezbollah is pushed away from the border.

Israeli Cabinet minister Gila Gamliel told Israeli media that Netanyahu had been expected to speak with Aoun “for the first time after so many years of no contact between the two countries.”

Israel and Lebanon remain formally at war and have had no direct leader-to-leader contact in decades.

The latest U.S. diplomatic push follows a rare meeting Tuesday in Washington between Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad and Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter.

Those talks, held at the State Department under U.S. mediation, marked the first face-to-face discussions between senior Israeli and Lebanese officials in more than three decades.

Still, the prospect of a direct call between Netanyahu and Aoun has run into strong opposition inside Lebanon.

Hezbollah, which has opposed any contact with Israel, remains publicly against negotiations.

At the same time, Lebanon’s government has increasingly distanced itself from Hezbollah since the terror group entered the war.

The Lebanese government formally banned Hezbollah’s military activities on March 2 and has spent the past year trying to disarm the Iranian-backed group without triggering a broader civil conflict.

Meanwhile, fighting intensified Thursday in southern Lebanon.

Battles continued around the border town of Bint Jbeil, a longtime stronghold of Hezbollah — an Iran-backed terror group — that Israeli officials see as a key objective in the current offensive.

Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israeli forces were close to “overcoming” Hezbollah in Bint Jbeil.

The Israeli military’s immediate objective is to push Hezbollah farther from the border and prevent anti-tank missiles and other direct-fire weapons from threatening northern Israeli communities, Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

He said Israeli troops are now holding what the military calls “defense lines” several kilometers inside Lebanon, positions designed to keep Hezbollah gunmen and anti-tank squads from once again overlooking Israeli towns.

“We’re going to make sure we keep diminishing them,” Shoshani said.

Lebanese security officials also said an Israeli airstrike destroyed the last remaining bridge over the Litani River leading into southern Lebanon.

The strike effectively cut off nearly a tenth of the country from the rest of Lebanon after earlier Israeli attacks destroyed other crossings.

Israel has vowed to turn the area south of the Litani River into a “no-go zone” for Hezbollah.

Israeli military chief of staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said Wednesday that Hezbollah operatives would no longer be allowed to operate south of the river.

The Litani River, which runs roughly 20 miles north of Israel’s border, has long been viewed by Israel as the line beyond which Hezbollah forces should not be allowed to operate.

Hezbollah responded Thursday with fresh rocket fire into northern Israel.

Warning sirens sounded in several Israeli communities, sending residents into bomb shelters. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

According to Lebanese authorities, more than 2,100 people have been killed in Lebanon since March 2 and more than 1.2 million have been displaced.

Israeli officials say Hezbollah attacks have killed two Israeli civilians and 13 Israeli soldiers during the same period.

Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax shot and killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide in their home in Annandale, Virginia, police said Thursday.

Fairfax County police said that just after midnight, Fairfax shot his wife several times in the basement of their home and then went upstairs to the primary bedroom and shot and killed himself.

Both their teenage children were home when the incident occurred. According to two sources with knowledge of the investigation, Fairfax’s son called 911 just after midnight from the home. The caller said he thought his mother, Cerina Fairfax, had been stabbed. When police arrived at the home, they found bullet casings near her body. Later, they found Justin Fairfax upstairs with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said there was no prolonged confrontation before the shooting.

“I think it all kind of happened at once,” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said.”There wasn’t a pause … it all happened pretty spontaneously.”

Police said that Fairfax and his wife were in the early stages of divorce proceedings, and Fairfax had recently been served paperwork related to that divorce.

“This has been an ongoing domestic dispute surrounding what seems to be a complicated or messy divorce,” Davis said during a briefing Thursday morning.

The couple had been living together but were separated, residing in separate bedrooms. Cerina Fairfax filed for divorce last July.

Davis called the incident “traumatic” for the two teenage children. He said victims’ services are working with them and other family members.

“This is certainly a fall from grace for a relatively high-profile family that seemingly had a lot of things going for them,” Davis said. “Tragic for the children to lose both parents. Extra tragic for them to actually be in the home when it occurred.”

In January, Fairfax called police alleging his wife assaulted him, although police determined at the time that the assault never occurred, based on footage from cameras at the home that had been placed by Cerina Fairfax.

Justin Fairfax, who was 47, served as the 41st lieutenant governor of Virginia, serving from 2018 until 2022. In 2019, a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her in 2004, and another woman accused him of raping her when they were both college students. He said both encounters were consensual.

Justin and Cerina Fairfax met at Duke University.

(CBS News)

NYC Mayor Mamdani says he and Trump “are in touch” and have “one place of agreement”

    April 16, 2026 10:58 AM EDT / CBS News

    By Kaia Hubbard

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Thursday that he and President Trump “are in touch” and are “honest, direct about the fact that we have many disagreements.”

“There is one place of agreement that we have, which is that we both love New York City,” Mamdani said in an interview on “CBS Mornings.”

Mr. Trump, a native New Yorker, has been friendly toward Mamdani despite their political differences, with the president praising him at a remarkable White House meeting in November where they pledged to work together to make the city better. They met again in February to talk about housing development.

“In many ways, it’s a New York story of people who have vehemently differing views, and have said many things about each other, and can also still work together on the points of agreement,” Mamdani said.

At the “heart of every conversation,” he said, is the question of “how can we make the city better?” He added that both men have said publicly that “the better the city does, the better we feel.”

One key area of disagreement is the Iran war. The mayor said he’s “deeply opposed to the war,” saying it’s something that “should be opposed not just on a political level or an economic level, but frankly, a moral level.”

“We’re talking about spending close to $30 billion to kill thousands of people an ocean away, while we’re told that we don’t have even an ounce of that money to help working class Americans across this country,” Mamdani said.

Asked by “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King whether he has spoken with the president about the conflict, Mamdani said “it’s no secret of how I feel about the Iran war,” adding that “the president and I are very honest about those disagreements.”

When pressed again, Mamdani said he and Mr. Trump have had “a conversation about a number of issues, and that includes our disagreements on foreign policy.” He said he would keep the “frequency and the nature of those conversations private, because that’s the premise of them.”

“But I will tell you that in those conversations, it is one that is driven by actually being candid,” he said.

After Mamdani and the president first sat down together in November, Mr. Trump said “some of his ideas are really the same ideas that I have.” The president also said, “we agree on a lot more than I would have thought. I want him to do a great job, and we’ll help him do a great job.”

The tone was in stark contrast to months of hostility in which Mr. Trump strongly opposed Mamdani during his mayoral campaign, and even threatened to arrest and deport him. Mamdani had accused the president of acting like a “despot.”

IRS CEO Frank Bisignano discusses Tax Day, rising refunds and ‘Trump accounts’ for kids

IRS CEO Frank Bisignano reveals average tax refunds are up more than 11% for Tax Day 2026, with over $270 billion issued. He credits the Working Families Tax Cut Act for permanent tax cuts and reducing the tax burden. Bisignano also promotes “Trump Accounts” for children, offering a $1,000 deposit for newborns and allowing up to $5,000 in annual contributions, enrolling 5 million dependents and fostering financial literacy.

Republicans are betting tax cuts they championed will be a difference-maker in November’s midterm elections amid a rise in refunds this filing season.

But Republicans still face a key challenge — convincing voters to credit them for the tax relief when they head to the ballot box.

“You can talk about it, but you’ve got to feel it and that’s what’s going to happen,” House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., told Fox News Digital in an interview on Wednesday, referring to the slate of new tax breaks signed into law by President Donald Trump in 2025.

“We believe by the time of the midterms, people are not only going to be talking about it, they are going to feel it,” Emmer insisted.

STRATEGY SESSION: TRUMP’S TEAM HUDDLES ON MIDTERM MESSAGING WITH SPOTLIGHT ON ECONOMY

As they look to defend their slim House majority, the GOP is ramping up its messaging to promote the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, also known as the Working Families Tax Cuts. Republicans spent Tax Day on Wednesday touting larger refunds this year while highlighting Democratic lawmakers’ opposition to the tax bill that passed with solely GOP votes.

The average refund this year is over $3,400, amounting to an 11% increase compared to last tax season, according to data released by the Internal Revenue Service on Wednesday.

Republicans have pointed to those returns as early proof their tax policy is reaching voters’ wallets.

A vast swath of Americans is also benefiting from new tax cuts that Trump first floated on the 2024 campaign trail.

More than 53 million tax filers claimed new deductions for tips, overtime pay, automobile loans or being over the age of 65, according to the Treasury Department. Some are also receiving a larger child tax credit and relief for state and local taxes.

“When you’re seeing it in your tax return, when you’re seeing it in your paycheck, when you’re actually able to feel that, I think that’s going to make a difference to put us in a good spot for 2026,” Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., said Wednesday.

Democrats, however, argue those benefits may not be enough to overcome Americans’ broader economic concerns.

The party is voicing increasing confidence it will retake House control and put the Senate in play this November, citing voter discontent about cost-of-living issues and Trump’s declining approval ratings. Republicans must also overcome the trend of the party in power shedding seats during a midterm year.

“A lot of people want to count us out in November,” Emmer said during a GOP messaging event highlighting the new tax benefits on Wednesday. “We’re going to be just fine, because we’ve got a great map in the House. We’ve got great candidates across the country.”

Democrats have largely opposed the tax cuts, arguing they disproportionately benefit corporations and the wealthy.

But Republicans say working Americans and small businesses will see a smaller tax bill this year as a result of their policies.

Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman told Fox News Digital that the overtime deduction has been a “morale booster” for law enforcement putting in extra hours.

More than 25 million Americans have claimed the new tax break with an average deduction of more than $3,100, according to the IRS.

Republicans are also highlighting a slate of business tax breaks, which beneficiaries argue could boost job growth and provide economic benefits to their community.

“It gave me the certainty and the confidence to go out and make capital investments,” Courtney Silver, who owns a machine shop in North Carolina and invested more than $1 million in equipment following the passage of the tax bill, told Fox News Digital.

“For everything we invested in, we need to create those new positions on our team,” Silver added.

The United States could have shed nearly 6 million jobs if Republicans had failed to extend the 2017 tax cuts through the party’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, according to the National Association of Manufacturers.

Still, seven in 10 Americans say their taxes are too high, the highest dissatisfaction in more than two decades, according to a recent Fox News poll.

Some Democratic-led states have notably refused to conform to the new federal tax breaks enacted by Republicans, citing concern about their impact on state revenue. GOP lawmakers have argued it’s an attempt by Democrats to prevent voters from feeling the tax relief passed by Republicans.

“I’ve got a governor that refuses and a Democrat-controlled legislature that refuses to do tax compliance, so I’m not getting the benefit, nor is any other Minnesotan,” Emmer said, referring to the average increase in returns. “That’s a game changer and my state’s not getting that.”

Trump is heading to Nevada and Arizona beginning Thursday to highlight his “no tax on tips” and “no tax on overtime” policies as he goes to bat for Republicans to help them keep their bicameral congressional majority in this year’s midterm elections.
