Journalist Hunter S. Thompson took own life, Colorado investigators affirm

    • Summary
    • CBI review finds no new evidence to dispute 2005 suicide ruling
    • Investigators re-examined scene, conducted new interviews
    • Widow Anita Thompson had raised questions about original ruling

Jan 23 (Reuters) – A comprehensive case review into the 2005 death of author-journalist Hunter S. Thompson, including autopsy records, has affirmed authorities’ original conclusion that he took his own life, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said on Friday.

The review, conducted after the writer’s widow, Anita Thompson, raised questions about the official suicide ruling, found no “new physical evidence, facts, or circumstances to support a conclusion different from the 2005 investigation,” the CBI said.

The reexamination corroborated the original determination of the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office that Thompson died from a self-inflicted gunshot to his head at his Owl Creek farm retreat near Aspen in February 2005. He was 67.

In an apparent suicide note written days before his death but published months later by Rolling Stone magazine, his literary springboard, Thompson lamented the onset of old age and physical limitations, then concluded, “Relax — this won’t hurt.” The note, scrawled in black marker, was titled, “Football Season is Over.”

Friends and family had said at the time that Thompson, whose “gonzo” style of journalism eschewed any pretense of objectivity and established the hard-living writer as a counter-culture icon, had been in pain from a hip-replacement, back surgery and a recently broken leg.

Those close to him also had said that Thompson, a longtime gun enthusiast, had contemplated taking his own life for years.

But Anita Thompson, now 54, contacted Pitkin County Sheriff Michael Buglione with “new concerns and potential information” related to the original investigation into her husband’s death, prompting the sheriff to request reopening the case in July 2025, the CBI said in a statement announcing its findings.

“While we have always believed the original investigation was conducted properly, we recognized the importance of an independent review for the Thompson family,” Buglione wrote in the statement. “CBI’s conclusions reaffirm the original findings and, we hope, provide reassurance and clarity.”

    SCENE RE-EXAMINED, INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED

Most of the original physical evidence and photographs from the 2005 probe have been disposed of, according to the CBI.

But state investigators reviewed autopsy and other law enforcement records from the case, re-examined the scene, and interviewed a number of people, including Anita Thompson, her late husband’s son, Juan Thompson, and his ex-daughter-in-law, Jennifer Thompson. The original lead detective and the county coroner also were interviewed.

“The modern trajectory analysis and scene reconstruction conducted in 2025 – which was based on the intact bullet defect – was consistent with the original PCSO investigation, the autopsy report and the observations of original investigators,” the CBI said.

In a statement carried by other news media outlets, Anita Thompson said she was grateful to the CBI for its “thorough” review, adding, “This allows all of us who loved Hunter to move forward with a clean conscience.”

Hunter Thompson was best known for his book “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” adapted from a two-part article written for Rolling Stone in late 1971, chronicling his drug-fueled misadventures in Nevada while ostensibly covering a motorcycle race in the desert.

The book became the basis for a 1998 Hollywood adaptation, starring Johnny Depp as Thompson’s alter-ego, Raoul Duke. The writer was also caricatured as Uncle Duke in the comic strip “Doonesbury,” right down to his signature aviator glasses and cigarette holder.

The New York Times reported earlier this month that his widow went to authorities with suspicions about her husband’s demise after hearing of rumors from a relative that his death had been staged to appear as a suicide.

    • Key Pentagon document says aim is to shift more responsibility to South Korea
    • 28,500 US troops based in South Korea
    • Priority for Pentagon is homeland defense

Jan 23 (Reuters) – The Pentagon foresees a “more limited” role in deterring North Korea, with South Korea taking primary responsibility, according to a policy document released on Friday, a move that could lead to a reduction of U.S. forces on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea hosts about 28,500 U.S. troops in combined defense against North Korea’s military threat, and Seoul has raised its defense budget by 7.5% for this year.

“South Korea is capable of taking primary responsibility for deterring North Korea with critical but more limited U.S. support,” the Pentagon said in the 25-page National Defense Strategy document that guides its policies.

“This shift in the balance of responsibility is consistent with America’s interest in updating U.S. force posture on the Korean Peninsula.”

SHIFT BY TRUMP TO FOCUS ON U.S. HOMELAND DEFENSE

In recent years, U.S. officials have signaled a desire to make U.S. forces in South Korea more flexible, to potentially operate outside the Korean Peninsula in response to a broader range of threats, such as in defending Taiwan and checking China’s growing military reach.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

South Korea has resisted the idea of shifting the role of U.S. troops but has worked to grow its defense capabilities in the past 20 years, with the goal of being able to take on the wartime command of combined U.S. and South Korean forces. South Korea has 450,000 troops.

Its Defense Ministry said the U.S. military based in the country is the “core” of the alliance that has deterred North Korean aggression and ensured peace on the peninsula and the region.

“We will be cooperating closely with the U.S. to continue developing it in that direction,” it said.

North Korea routinely criticizes the U.S. military presence in South Korea and joint drills – which the allies say are defensive – as dress rehearsals for invasion against it driven by what it calls Washington’s hegemonic zeal.

The Pentagon’s top policy official, Elbridge Colby, is due to travel to Asia next week and is expected to visit South Korea, a U.S. official said.

The wide-ranging document, which each new administration publishes, said the Pentagon’s priority was defending the homeland. In the Indo-Pacific region, the document said, the Pentagon was focused on ensuring that China could not dominate the United States or U.S. allies.

“This does not require regime change or some other existential struggle. Rather, a decent peace, on terms favorable to Americans but that China can also accept and live under, is possible,” the document said, without mentioning Taiwan by name.

China, which describes Taiwan as the most important and sensitive topic in its relations with the United States, claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and has not ruled out the use of force to take control of the island. Taiwan rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims and says only the people of Taiwan can decide their future.

China’s defense ministry has repeatedly said that resolving “the Taiwan question” was a Chinese matter.

TRUMP SENDS ‘ARMADA’ TOWARD IRAN, PRESSURES UKRAINE

Joseph Wu, secretary-general of Taiwan’s National Security Council, said the U.S. strategy document sets the goal of preventing countries like China from dominating the Indo-Pacific and erecting strong “denial defense” along the so-called first island chain, an arc that stretches from Japan through Taiwan and the Philippines.

“Taiwan is a key player in the region & will continue to invest in defense to deter aggression & achieve peace,” Wu posted on X.

The document is based on President Donald Trump’s National Security Strategy, published last year, which said the United States will reassert its dominance in the Western Hemisphere, build military strength in the Indo-Pacific and possibly reassess its relationship with Europe.

Trump said on Thursday the U.S. had an “armada” heading toward Iran but that he hoped he would not have to use it, as he renewed warnings to Tehran against killing protesters or restarting its nuclear program. The deployments to the Middle East expand the options available to Trump, both to better defend U.S. forces in the region at a moment of high tension and to take any additional military action after striking Iranian nuclear sites in June. The Pentagon document says that while Iran has suffered setbacks in recent months, it is aiming to rebuild its military, with Tehran leaving open the possibility that it could “try again to obtain a nuclear weapon.” Even with U.S. troops heading to the region, the document says, Israel is a “model ally” and could be further empowered to defend itself. The United States has had a sometimes strained relationship with Israel over its war in Gaza.

Trump’s National Security Strategy from last year drew an outcry from Europeans after it said that Europe faced “civilizational erasure” and might one day lose its status as a reliable U.S. ally.

The Trump administration is putting pressure on Ukraine to reach a peace deal in the war triggered by Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, with Moscow demanding Kyiv cede its entire eastern industrial area of Donbas before it stops fighting.

The Pentagon’s strategy document is more measured on European allies, saying that while the United States will remain engaged in Europe, it will prioritize defending the United States and deterring China.

It says Russia will remain a “persistent but manageable” threat for NATO’s eastern members and that the Pentagon will provide Trump with options to “guarantee U.S. military and commercial access to key terrain” in different parts of the world, including Greenland.

Trump said this week he had secured total and permanent U.S. access to Greenland in a deal with NATO, whose head said allies would have to step up their commitment to Arctic security to ward off threats from Russia and China.

WASHINGTON, Jan 23 (Reuters) – Grammy Award-winning opera star Renee Fleming has withdrawn from performances in May at the Kennedy Center, with her withdrawal coming during a wave of cancellations at the Washington institution since its takeover by President Donald Trump.

A message on the Kennedy Center’s website said Fleming, who had been scheduled to appear with the National Symphony Orchestra in May, had to withdraw “due to a scheduling conflict.”

Read about innovative ideas and the people working on solutions to global crises with the Reuters Beacon newsletter. Sign up here.

    WHY IT’S IMPORTANT

Trump named himself chairman of the Kennedy Center and filled its board with his allies last year. In December the institution’s board voted to rename it the Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, or Trump Kennedy Center for short.

Since then, many groups and artists have withdrawn from the center, citing the Republican leader’s takeover. Democrats, noting that the center’s name was established by Congress, have said Trump’s rebranding has no force of law. John F. Kennedy’s family denounced the renaming move as undermining the slain president’s legacy.

    KEY QUOTES

“Renee Fleming regrets that, due to a scheduling conflict, she must withdraw from her May 2026 concerts with the NSO,” the message on the institution’s website said. “A new soloist and repertoire will be announced at a later date, and the remainder of the program remains unchanged.”

    CONTEXT

Last year, Fleming left her role as artistic adviser-at-large at the center, citing the departures of the institution’s previous leadership.

FBI Director Kash Patel shared a picture of what he said was a “self-awarded” trophy made by former FBI officials to celebrate Operation Arctic Frost, an investigation launched after the 2020 election targeting President Donald Trump and his allies.

The bizarre metallic-colored, 3D-printed award featured “AF” with a lightening bolt and dollar sign printed along its body and a raised map of the U.S. on its base, which also included miniature buildings and infrastructure. “CR-15” was printed along the base. CR-15 is a now-disbanded FBI unit that served as a public corruption squad.

“People ask why I said the old FBI was a diseased temple,” Patel wrote on X. “This is what corruption looks like when it thinks no one is watching.

“I [disbanded CR-15] and removed the corrupt actors involved,” he continued. “So when legacy media cries that President Trump’s FBI fired people and made sweeping changes, I have one response: You’re damn right we did.”

Former special counsel Jack Smith spent hours publicly defending the parameters of his investigation into President Donald Trump on Thursday in the face of sharp questions from Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee — including one lawmaker in particular who repeatedly accused Smith of “spying” on certain lawmakers.

During one of the most contentious portions of the hearing, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., pressed Smith over the so-called “tolling records” Smith sought as part of the special counsel investigation, which included investigating Trump’s alleged attempts to subvert the results of the 2020 election.

Unlike wiretaps, tolling records are phone logs that reveal the phone numbers of incoming and outgoing callers, as well as the time and duration of calls. Republicans have zeroed in on the tolling records in recent months, blasting them as an aggressive tactic by Smith and an act of “political weaponization,” which Smith vehemently denied.

Issa, in particular, excoriated Smith for the decision to seek the tolling records of Republicans in the House and Senate — which he said Thursday was tantamount to spying on his political “enemies.”

Smith, for his part, defended the tolling records as “common practice” in such investigations.

“Maybe they’re not your political enemies, but they sure as [heck] were Joe Biden’s poltiical enemies, weren’t they?” Issa asked Smith. “They were Harris’s political enemies,” he said, referring to the former vice president. “They were the enemies of the president — and you were their arm, weren’t you?”

    “No,” Smith said.

“So, you [spied on the speaker of the House] and these other senators and so on, and informed no one — and in fact, put a gag order in — so they couldn’t discover it,” Issa said.

Smith attempted to respond before Issa continued.

“Why did Congress, a separate branch that you, under the Constitution, have to respect — why is it that no one should be informed — including the judges?” Issa pressed. “As you went in to spy on these people, did you mention that you were spying on, [that you were] seeking records so you could find out about when conversations occurred between the U.S. Speaker of the House and the president?”

“Did you inform the judge?” Issa continued. “Or did you hold that back?”

“My office didn’t spy on anyone,” Smith said, before Issa cut back in.

“Wait a second,” he interjected sharply. “The question I asked you, Mr. Smith, was pretty straightforward.”

Before Smith could respond again, the panel’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Jamie Raskin, interjected to address House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan.

“Mr. Chairman, would you please instruct the gentleman to allow the witness to answer the question?” he said. “The witness has the right to answer the question.”

Smith previously said that the Public Integrity Section had signed off on the subpoenas, a point corroborated by previously released public records. Those records also showed that the Public Integrity Section told prosecutors to be wary of concerns lawmakers could raise about the Constitution’s speech or debate clause, which gives Congress members added protections.

The subpoenas to the phone companies were accompanied by gag orders blocking the lawmakers from learning about the existence of the subpoenas for at least one year.

Smith previously told the House lawmakers in a closed-door hearing that the D.C. federal court, which authorized the gag orders, would not have been aware that they applied to Congress members.

“I don’t think we identified that, because I don’t think that was Department policy at the time,” Smith said.

Asked during the earlier deposition about who should be held accountable for lawmakers who felt that the seizure of a narrow set of their phone data was a constitutional violation, Smith said Trump should be held accountable.

“These records are people, in the case of the Senators, Donald Trump directed his co-conspirators to call these people to further delay the proceedings,” Smith said.

“He chose to do that. If Donald Trump had chosen to call a number of Democratic senators, we would have gotten toll records for Democratic Senators. So responsibility for why these records, why we collected them, that’s — that lies with Donald Trump,” he said at the time.

US power grid faces stress test amid arctic chill, data center demand

    January 22, 2026 9:20 PM UTC / Reuters

Jan 22 (Reuters) – The U.S. power grid faces an elevated risk of disruption over the next several days as an Arctic blast and reduced gas supplies test the sturdiness of electric infrastructure vulnerable to the around-the-clock demands of data centers.

Beginning Friday, an extreme weather pattern of Arctic cold is expected to evolve and bring extremely low temperatures and heavy snow and ice, with the potential to create significant challenges for the electric grid through next week. That was the assessment given on Thursday by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, the top regulator for power reliability in the United States.

The Reuters Power Up newsletter provides everything you need to know about the global energy industry. Sign up here.

Cold weather has already started to reduce gas supplies by freezing oil and gas wells and pipes in several Midwest and Great Plains states .

As a result, U.S. natural gas futures soared by a record 63% over the past three days to a six-week high on Thursday on forecasts of extreme cold over the next two weeks.

Demand next week is expected to approach last winter’s record as homes and businesses crank up their heaters to escape a brutal cold snap, according to power grid operators, analysts and data from financial firm LSEG.

Meanwhile, winter electricity demand on the largest U.S. power grid – the PJM Interconnection – is expected to set an all-time record next week.

“Peak demand has the potential to exceed 130,000 MW for seven straight days next week, a winter streak that PJM has never experienced,” the grid operator said on Thursday in a cautionary alert.

“Depending on temperatures, PJM could set a new all-time winter peak load on Jan. 27. And that cold could extend into early February, so PJM is taking additional precautions with its generation and transmission owners to prepare.”

PJM serves 67 million people in 13 states and Washington, D.C. It has been struggling to keep up with booming demand from the proliferation of Big Tech’s power-hungry data centers needed for the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence.

In recent years, regional grids, including PJM, have been caught flat-footed by extreme weather.

The worst episode happened in Texas in early 2021 when more than 200 people died as the state’s main grid lost nearly 50% of its generation capacity. Millions of Texans were left without power, including the family of an 11-year-old boy who froze to death while sleeping in his bed.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the state’s main grid operator, was criticized in after-action reports for not making sure the system was properly winterized.

Since then, stricter state and federal rules have been implemented to require better winter readiness by utilities and grid operators. ERCOT, for example, plans to complete a minimum of 450 inspections this winter season (December–February). As of January 18, 240 inspections had been completed, ERCOT said.

But the gap between winter and summer peaks is narrowing, caused by rapid data center growth, said Philip Krein, a grid expert at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

That means utilities have less time to take power plants offline, for example, to perform maintenance.

“That makes the grid more vulnerable,” Krein said. “The maintenance season is being squeezed like never before.”

ERCOT and PJM both said they expected they will have enough generation to meet demand this winter.

However, ERCOT has forecast there’s a slight chance – 1.18% – of a small, controlled blackout on the morning of January 31.

ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas said on Thursday he was confident the Texas grid will be able to handle the demands of cold weather.

Neon

Ken Woroner/Netflix

2026 Oscars snubs and surprises include Ariana Grande, George Clooney, Paul Mescal missing from nominees

    2026-01-22T10:27:00-0500 / CBS News

George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Paul Mescal, Amanda Seyfried, Denzel Washington, Daniel Day-Lewis and Brad Pitt are some of Hollywood’s biggest names who failed to receive an Oscar nomination in acting categories when the nominees for the 98th Academy Awards were announced in Hollywood on Thursday.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, both nominees last year for their performances in “Wicked,” were not similarly nominated for the sequel. In fact, “Wicked: For Good,” was shut out of all categories.

On the opposite end, “Sinners” broke the record for Oscar nominations, with 16, including one in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ newest category, best casting. “One Battle After Another” followed with 13 nominations, while “Frankenstein,” “Marty Supreme” and “Sentimental Value” each earned nine.

    Best actor

Clooney, who played a Hollywood star much like himself in “Jay Kelly,” was left off the best actor list, as were Jesse Plemons (“Bugonia”), Oscar Isaac (“Frankenstein”), Jeremy Allen White (“Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere”), Daniel Day-Lewis (“Anemone”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Eddington”), and Denzel Washington (“Highest 2 Lowest”). Hugh Jackman was not nominated for “Song Sung Blue,” though his partner in the film, Kate Hudson, was. Joel Edgerton, the central pillar of the film “Train Dreams,” was not nominated, though the picture earned four nominations, including best picture. Brad Pitt was also left in the pit stop for his performance in “F1,” but as a producer he shared in the film’s best picture nomination.

Michael B. Jordan received his first nomination for playing two characters in “Sinners,” while Leonardo DiCaprio earned his eighth for “One Battle After Another.” “Marty Supreme” star Timothée Chalamet, at age 30, became the youngest male to earn three best actor nominations (after “Call Me By Your Name” and “A Complete Unknown”), taking that title from Marlon Brando.

Nominees: Timothée Chalamet, “Marty Supreme”; Leonardo DiCaprio, “One Battle After Another”; Ethan Hawke, “Blue Moon”; Michael B. Jordan, “Sinners;” and Wagner Moura, “The Secret Agent.”

The best actress category was over-stuffed with fine performances this year. Golden Globe nominees Amanda Seyfried (“The Testament of Ann Lee”), Julia Roberts (“After the Hunt”), Chase Infiniti (“One Battle After Another”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Die, My Love”), Tessa Thompson (“Hedda”) and Eva Victor (“Sorry, Baby”) were left out of the Oscar nominations in this category, as were Julia Garner (“Weapons”), Dakota Johnson (“Materialists”), Jodie Foster (“A Private Life”), and Laura Dern (“Is This Thing On?”).

Rose Byrne (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”) and Renate Reinsve (“Sentimental Value”) each received their first Oscar nominations, while Emma Stone earned her fifth acting nod, after having won two Oscars.

Nominees: Jessie Buckley, “Hamnet”; Rose Byrne, “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”; Kate Hudson, “Song Sung Blue”; Renate Reinsve, “Sentimental Value”; and Emma Stone, “Bugonia.”

The Screen Actors Guild’s Actor nominees Paul Mescal (“Hamnet”) and Miles Caton (“Sinners”) were left out of the Oscars, as were Adam Sandler (“Jay Kelly”), Aidan Delbus (“Bugonia”), Kevin O’Leary (“Marty Supreme”), Josh Brolin (“Wake Up Dead Man” and “Weapons”), Idris Elba and Tracy Letts (“A House of Dynamite”), William H. Macy (“Train Dreams”), Jack O’Connell (“Sinners”), Andrew Scott (“Blue Moon”), Josh O’Connor (“Wake Up Dead Man”), Mark Hamill (“The Life of Chuck”), and Andrew Garfield (“After the Hunt”).

Delroy Lindo (“Sinners”), Jacob Elordi (“Frankenstein”) and Stellan Skarsgård (“Sentimental Value”) each received their first Oscar nomination, while Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn, of “One Battle After Another,” previously have seven nominations and three Oscars between them.

Nominees: Benicio Del Toro, “One Battle After Another”; Jacob Elordi, “Frankenstein”; Delroy Lindo, “Sinners”; Sean Penn, “One Battle After Another”; and Stellan Skarsgård, “Sentimental Value.”

Rebecca Ferguson (“A House of Dynamite”) was one of the most notable absences from the list of best supporting actress nominees, but there was a plethora of performances that didn’t make it, including Golden Globe nominee Emily Blunt (“The Smashing Machine”), Odessa A’zion and Gwyneth Paltroe for “Marty Supreme,” Glenn Close (“Wake Up Dead Man”), Regina Hall (“One Battle After Another”), Hailee Steinfeld (“Sinners”), Mia Goth (“Frankenstein”), Jennifer Lopez (“Kiss of the Spider Woman”), Margaret Qualley (“Blue Moon”), Zoey Deutch (“Nouvelle Vague”), Felicity Jones (“Train Dreams”), Laura Dern (“Jay Kelly”), Mariam Afshari (“It Was Just an Accident”), and Oona Chaplin (“Avatar: Fire and Water”).

Apart from Amy Madigan (“Weapons”), all the nominees in this category are first-timers.

Nominees: Elle Fanning, “Sentimental Value”; Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, “Sentimental Value”; Amy Madigan, “Weapons”; Wunmi Mosaku, “Sinners”; and Teyana Taylor, “One Battle After Another.”

It was a shock that the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize-winner, the powerful “It Was Just an Accident,” was not among the Oscar finalists; four of the previous Palme d’Or recipients (including Oscar-winners “Parasite” and “Anora”) managed to get nominated. It was just as shocking to find the Formula One racing film “F1” in the running, as it only earned nominations in the editing, sound and visual effects categories. But other crowdpleasers were also missing, including “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “Weapons,” and “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere.”

Nominees: “Bugonia,” “F1,” “Hamnet,” “Frankenstein,” “One Battle After Another,” “Marty Supreme,” “The Secret Agent,” “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners,” and “Train Dreams.”

    Best director

Despite “Frankenstein” earning nine nominations, including best picture, Directors Guild nominee Guillermo del Toro was not cited for directing (though he did earn a nomination for his adapted screenplay). Also left out were Jafar Panahi (“It Was Just an Accident”); Kleber Mendonça Filho (“The Secret Agent”); Zach Cregger (“Weapons”); Yorgos Lanthimos (“Bugonia”); Park Chan-wook (“No Other Choice”); Clint Bentley (“Train Dreams”); Richard Linklater (“Nouvelle Vague,” “Blue Moon”); Kathryn Bigelow (“A House of Dynamite”); Mona Fastvold (“The Testament of Ann Lee”); Mary Bronstein (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”); Rian Johnson (“Wake Up Dead Man”); Kelly Reichardt (“The Mastermind”); and DGA nominee Eva Victor (“Sorry, Baby”).

Nominees: Paul Thomas Anderson, “One Battle After Another”; Ryan Coogler, “Sinners”; Josh Safdie, “Marty Supreme”; Joachim Trier, “Sentimental Value”; and Chloé Zhao, “Hamnet.”

    Best original song

It’s been common practice that when Hollywood adapts a Broadway musical, a new song is created in the hopes that it will earn a best original song nomination. Often that is the case, and in rare instances (“Evita”) they’ve won. But Stephen Schwartz, despite having two new “Wicked” songs on the Oscar shortlist, was left out. Also missing out: Miley Cyrus (“Avatar: Fire and Ash”), Ed Sheeran (“F1”), Billy Idol (“Billy Idol Should Be Dead”), and Nine Inch Nails (“Tron: Ares”).

Not left out was songwriter Diane Warren, who earned her 17th Oscar nomination, though she has never won. Always a bridesmaid…

Nominees: “Dear Me” from “Diane Warren: Relentless”; “Golden” from “KPop Demon Hunters”; “I Lied to You” from “Sinners”; “Sweet Dreams of Joy” from “Viva Verdi!” and “Train Dreams” from “Train Dreams.”

    *

The 98th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien (who sadly did not get a best supporting actor nomination for playing a therapist in “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”), will be presented March 15 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
