Google to pay $68 million over allegations its voice assistant eavesdropped on users

    Updated on: January 26, 2026 / 12:58 PM EST / CBS News

Google has agreed to pay $68 million to settle a class-action lawsuit that alleged the technology giant’s voice assistant had illegally recorded users and then shared their private conversations with advertisers.

The preliminary settlement, filed January 23 in federal court in San Jose, California, requires approval by U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman.

The settlement stems from a lawsuit filed by several Google device owners who claimed their conversations had been recorded without their knowledge. While Google stated that its voice assistant would only register people’s speech when consumers uttered an activation phrase, such as “Hey Google,” the consumers claimed that their devices recorded them even without using such language.

Some claimants alleged the Google devices recorded private conversations about financial issues, personal decisions and employment.

If the settlement is approved, Google will place $68 million in a fund that will pay all consumer claims, as well as court-approved attorneys’ fees and other costs.

Alphabet-owned Google didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from CBS News.

Consumers will be able to submit claims for up to three Google devices, although how much individuals receive will depend on how many claims are submitted, according to the settlement.

The agreement is similar to an Apple class-action lawsuit that alleged its Siri voice assistant had eavesdropped on private or confidential conversations. Apple device owners are this month receiving payments from the $95 million settlement, ranging from about $8 to $40 per person.

    By Megan Cerullo

    Kalshi

Bettors wagered millions on this weekend’s expected snowfall across the U.S.

    By Megan Cerullo

    Updated on: January 26, 2026 / 8:05 PM EST / CBS News

Bettors seeking to cash in on the weekend’s snowstorm flocked to prediction markets to wager millions on how much snow would ultimately accumulate across the U.S., with more than $6 million bet on New York City’s totals alone.

Online prediction markets Polymarket and Kalshi accepted bets for expected snowfall in different locales across the U.S. For example, more than $1.2 million was wagered on a market at Polymarket, titled “How many inches of snow in NYC this weekend? (Jan 24-26)”.

Based on bets placed through Monday, the implied consensus snowfall for New York City’s total was 11 inches. The official outcome has yet to be determined, and bettors won’t cash out — or notch losses — until totals for the three days between Jan. 24 and Jan. 26 are released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, according to the market’s description on the site.

Polymarket said the market will rely on snowfall data from NOAA’s “New Snow (IN)” daily figures for the New York–Central Park area.

The most popular wager for the Big Apple was in the 10- to 12-inch range. Shares predicting snowfall within that bracket were trading at 90 cents each Monday morning.

The top bettor had purchased more than 8,100 shares, anticipating this outcome at 61 cents apiece. The same bettor had also wagered more than $1,000 on 12 to 14 inches of snowfall. Both bets remain active, meaning they have not yet been resolved because an outcome has not been determined.

Bettors also wagered on snowfall in Washington, D.C., and bet which cities would see snow this weekend, including Atlanta and Seattle.

    Kalshi’s NYC snowfall wager

On Kalshi, another online prediction market, bettors wagered a cumulative seven figures on a similar climate-related question: “Snow in New York City from Jan 24-26?”

More than $5 million had been wagered on Kalshi as of Monday morning, with the market presuming a 99% chance of more than 10 inches of accumulation.

The market, which closes at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time, will rely on data from the National Weather Service to determine which bets pay out, according to the site.

Prediction markets are forums where individuals can purchase and sell shares in the outcomes of a wide variety of future events, including climate events, sports games, political contests and more. The sites track wagers in real-time and provide insights into consumers’ and investors’ mindsets.

Online prediction markets also gained attention earlier this month, when an anonymous trader earned more than $463,000 by accurately predicting that Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro would be captured.

The timing of the speculative bet raised questions about the bettor’s identity and potential access to inside information ahead of the U.S. operation to seize Maduro, experts told CBS News.

Experts say such markets are only lightly regulated and are susceptible to manipulation, while the outcome of an event like a snowstorm is harder to control.

Nike slashes 775 jobs in US to speed up automation, boost profit

Jan 26 (Reuters) – Nike is laying off 775 employees, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday, as the sportswear giant looks to boost profits and accelerate its use of automation.

The cuts will primarily impact distribution center roles in Tennessee and Mississippi, where the sneaker giant operates large warehouses, the person said.

The Week in Breakingviews newsletter offers insights and ideas from Reuters’ global financial commentary team. Sign up here.

Nike, whose business is struggling, is trying to reestablish itself as the world’s leading sportswear brand after losing market share to rivals. It has undergone several rounds of layoffs in recent years.

In August, it cut a little less than 1% of its corporate workforce as part of its turnaround efforts under CEO Elliott Hill, who took over the top job in 2024.

It had previously announced it would cut 2% of its jobs – more than 1,600 in total – in February 2024.

Monday’s layoffs were first reported by CNBC.

In a statement to Reuters, Nike said it was “taking steps to strengthen and streamline our operations so we can move faster, (and) operate with greater discipline.”

The move will primarily impact its distribution operations in the U.S., the company said.

“Nike’s sales trends over the past two years have been well below normal, so it’s highly likely that it overbuilt warehouse capacity and overstaffed,” said Morningstar analyst David Swarz. Coupled with the rapidly increasing capabilities of AI, the cuts were “not surprising”, he said.

Nike had 77,800 employees worldwide, including retail and part-time staff, as of May 2025, when it published its last annual report.

Under Hill, the company has been investing heavily in its sneaker lines as it tries to refocus the brand on core sports such as running and soccer.

Nike reported a drop in gross margins for the second consecutive quarter in December, as poor sales in China and efforts to reset its product mix continued to vex it.

It also recently suffered a data breach that saw hackers release a trove of corporate data.

Nike said in its statement on Monday that the layoffs “are designed to reduce complexity, improve flexibility, and… support our path back to long-term, profitable growth”.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/video/what-to-know-heading-into-tax-season/

Tax season is officially underway. Here’s when you’ll get your refund in 2026.

    January 26, 2026 / 3:42 PM EST / CBS News

Americans can file their 2025 tax returns with the IRS starting on Monday, Jan. 26, but what many people really want to know is when they can expect their refund.

That depends largely on whether you file electronically — as 93% of taxpayers did during last year’s tax season — or if you submit a paper return. Because the latter requires IRS employees to process the file, it can take much longer for these filers to get their refund checks.

Some experts also warn that taxpayers could face customer service issues with the IRS this season, pointing to employee cuts at the agency last year and fallout from the federal shutdown, when many workers were furloughed at a time the agency is usually preparing for tax season.

“Taxpayers might want to lower their expectations and prepare for unanswered phone calls to the IRS and delays in tax refunds, given these ingredients for a problem-prone filing season,” Janet Holtzblatt, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, said in a blog post earlier this month.

The IRS didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

What is the refund timeframe for electronic tax filers?

People who file electronically typically receive their refunds in less than 21 days, according to the IRS. That means a taxpayer who files a Form 1040 on Jan. 26 could receive a refund by Feb. 16, assuming there are no issues with the return.

On Monday, the IRS said in a statement that it started phasing out paper refund checks late last year. As a result, most taxpayers must provide the tax agency with their bank routing and account numbers to receive their refund through direct deposit.

After you get a notice from the “Where’s My Refund?” app that the IRS has sent your check, it could take up to five days for the refund to appear in your bank account, the IRS says.

What if I claimed the EITC or ACTC?

Taxpayers who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), refundable tax credits designed for low- to moderate-income working families, may face a longer wait for their refunds.

That’s because, by law, the IRS is required to hold these returns longer, giving the agency longer to scan for fraud or misapplied tax credits. About one-third of EITC claims are paid in error because some taxpayers may not understand whether they qualify for it, the IRS says.

People who claimed either the EITC or the ACTC won’t get their refund until March 2, at the earliest, the IRS said Monday.

How can I track my refund?

Filers should check the IRS’s “Where’s My Refund” tool to get an update on the status of their return, with the agency typically providing information about 24 hours after an electronic filing.

People who file paper returns will need to wait about four weeks for their status to show up in the “Where’s My Refund” app, because it takes longer for those filings to get logged by IRS employees compared with automated processing of e-filed returns.

What information do I need for “Where’s My Refund”?

The IRS says you’ll need to provide the following info to use the agency’s “Where’s My Refund?” app:

    • Social Security or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN)
    • Filing status, such as “married filing jointly”
    • Exact refund amount on your return

The app will show one of several update statuses:

    • Return Received: This means the IRS has received your return and is processing it.
    • Refund Approved. This indicates that the IRS approved your refund and is preparing to issue it by the date shown.
    • Refund Sent. This means the IRS sent the refund to your bank or to you in the mail.

How big will this year’s tax refunds be?

Annual tax refunds are often the biggest checks that households receive each year, with payments last year averaging almost $3,200, according to IRS data.

This year’s refund season could be even larger, with the typical check set to increase by an additional $1,000, financial services company Piper Sandler said in a recent analysis. That means the average refund could rise to about $4,200, although some taxpayers will get a bigger check than others due to the Republicans’ “big, beautiful” tax and spending law.

For instance, older Americans who can claim the new $6,000 senior deduction may get a bigger boost, as well as homeowners who can claim the expanded $40,000 state and local tax deduction.

Chris Madel, a Minneapolis lawyer who represented the immigration agent who fatally shot Renee Good, said Monday that he was ending his Republican campaign for governor of Minnesota after a second protester was killed by federal authorities.

“I cannot support the national Republicans’ stated retribution on the citizens of our state,” Madel said in a video message he posted on social media, “nor can I count myself a member of a party that would do so.”

Madel, who has never held elected office, launched his candidacy in December as a political outsider and a fierce defender of law enforcement. One of nearly a dozen candidates in the Republican primary for governor, Madel had been endorsed by the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis.

He gained attention this month for providing legal representation to Jonathan Ross, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who shot Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis woman, on January 7.

“Operation Metro Surge has expanded far beyond its stated focus on true public safety threat,” Madel said in his message. “United States citizens, particularly those of color, live in fear. United States citizens are carrying papers to prove their citizenship. That’s wrong.”

He said too many US citizens in Minnesota have been detained by ICE “due to the color of their skin.” He also assailed the Department of Homeland Security’s move to enter homes without a criminal warrant, as revealed in a whistleblower complaint.

“Driving while Hispanic is not a crime,” he said. “Neither is driving while Asian.”

The decision from Madel comes after federal agents killed Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center who was protesting immigration actions. A CNN video analysis appears to show a federal immigration officer removing a gun from Pretti just prior to officers fatally shooting him.

“I have to look my daughters in the eye and tell them, ‘I believe I did what was right,’” Madel said. “And I am doing that today.”

Madel’s blistering critique of the Trump administration’s actions are notable given his legal assistance for Ross. His comments come as some Republicans nationally are beginning to question the actions of federal agents.

The escalating tensions in Minnesota have roiled the state’s politics three weeks after Gov. Tim Walz ended his reelection bid in the wake of a deepening federal investigation into a scandal over social services programs in Minnesota.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar filed paperwork last week to form a campaign committee to run for governor. She delayed a formal announcement after Pretti’s killing, saying she was more focused on trying to get ICE agents out of Minnesota than launching a campaign.

The remaining Republican candidates for governor include Lisa Demuth, the speaker of the Minnesota House, who is the highest-ranking Republican in the state. Demuth on Monday praised President Donald Trump’s announcement that border czar Tom Homan would be traveling to Minnesota, calling it “an opportunity for a reset” between federal and state authorities.

Madel appeared to be gaining ground, often finishing in the top share of Republican challengers in unofficial party straw polls.

No Republican candidate has won a statewide election in Minnesota since 2006 – a fact Madel noted in his video message.

“National Republicans have made it nearly impossible for a Republican to win a statewide election in Minnesota,” he said.

This story has been updated with additional information.

FIRST ON FOX: A cohort of Senate Republicans plans to launch a targeted task force aimed at tackling fraudsters in the wake of the Minnesota fraud scandal.

Republican members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee announced that they would form a task force dedicated to rooting out fraudsters abusing federal funding.

The seven-member panel will be led by HELP Committee Chair Bill Cassidy, R-La., who has cranked up efforts in recent weeks to crack down on fraud, particularly in Minnesota.

KEY SENATOR WON’T FUND DHS AS ICE, FEDERAL AGENTS ENTER HIS STATE

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., is launching a task force to investigate federal fraud with six other Senate Republicans in the wake of the Minnesota fraud scandal.(Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

“Our tax dollars are supposed to help American families, not line the pockets of fraudsters,” Cassidy said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “HELP Committee Republicans are committed to rooting out this fraud and ensuring Americans’ tax dollars are used responsibly.”

The long-running, nearly six-year-long investigation into alleged fraud in Minnesota gained new attention and traction among Republicans and the White House earlier this year.

The scandal, in which federal prosecutors estimate that up to $9 billion was stolen through a network of fraudulent fronts posing as daycare centers, food programs and health clinics, has dominated the bandwidth of many in the GOP and spurred the Trump administration’s deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents into Minneapolis.

The majority of those charged, so far, in the ongoing investigation are part of Minnesota’s Somali population. The Trump administration has taken steps outside the deploying of ICE agents to target Somalis in the area, too, including ending protected status for the population and launching investigations into whether the fraudulent activity is connected to al-Shabab, a terrorist organization based in Somalia.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced that he would not be seeking re-election on Jan. 5, 2026, at a press conference at the State Capitol in St. Paul, Minn.(Jerry Holt/The Minnesota Star Tribune via Getty Images)

The task force will delineate its focus into three prongs: health, education and labor and pensions.

Those three subgroups will be led by Sens. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., Roger Marshall, R-Kan., who will lead the health-focused section, Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., Jon Husted, who will lead the education-focused group, and R-Ohio, Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., and Tim Scott, R-S.C., who will chair the labor-and-pensions-focused section.

But the task force’s announcement comes at a precarious time, as lawmakers hurtle toward what could be another government shutdown fueled in large part by the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) actions in Minnesota.

SENATE DEMOCRATS REBEL AGAINST THEIR OWN LEADERSHIP OVER DHS FUNDING PACKAGE, INCREASING SHUTDOWN ODDS

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announced that Senate Democrats would not support a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security following a fatal shooting involving a border patrol agent in Minnesota on a Saturday.(Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

That situation comes after Senate Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., signaled their plan to reject the DHS funding bill following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti on Saturday by a border patrol agent. Cassidy, along with a handful of other congressional Republicans, demanded that the incident receive a fulsome and thorough investigation.

Still, Cassidy’s effort is not the first time he’s forayed into the Minnesota fraud scandal.

Earlier this month, the lawmaker led the entire Senate GOP in a letter to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, demanding that he provide receipts on several issues, and warned that failure to do so could lead to several streams of federal money flowing to Minnesota drying up.

That effort was centered on several requests, like how often the state conducted on-site monitoring, inspections or investigative visits to childcare facilities that received federal dollars.

Senate Republicans specifically wanted examples of any information uncovered on fake children, false attendance records, over-billing, ineligible enrollments, and shell or fake business structures, among other demands from Walz.

Feds yank contracts with Booz Allen Hamilton after Trump tax leak

    January 26, 2026 / 12:36 PM EST / CBS/AP

The Department of the Treasury said Monday that it is canceling all contracts with Booz Allen Hamilton after a former contractor who worked for the consulting firm leaked tax information belonging to thousands of people, including President Trump.

In 2024, former IRS contractor Charles Edward Littlejohn of Washington, D.C. — who worked for Booz Allen Hamilton — was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to leaking tax information about Mr. Trump and others to news outlets.

Littlejohn gave data to The New York Times and ProPublica between 2018 and 2020 in leaks that appeared to be “unparalleled in the IRS’s history,” prosecutors said.

The Treasury Department said in a new release on Monday that the tax return leak affected roughly 406,000 people, citing IRS data. The agency did not note Littlejohn’s release of Mr. Trump’s tax info.

“President Trump has entrusted his cabinet to root out waste, fraud and abuse, and canceling these contracts is an essential step to increasing Americans’ trust in government,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. “Booz Allen failed to implement adequate safeguards to protect sensitive data, including the confidential taxpayer information it had access to through its contracts with the Internal Revenue Service.”

A representative from Booz Allen Hamilton was not immediately available for comment.

In court documents, prosecutors said Littlejohn had applied to work as a contractor specifically to get Mr. Trump’s tax returns and figured out how to search and extract tax data to avoid triggering suspicions internally.

“I made my decision with full knowledge that I would likely end up in a courtroom to answer for my serious crime,” Littlejohn said at the time of his sentencing in January of 2024. “I used my skills to systematically violate the privacy of thousands of people.”

Treasury says the agency has 31 contracts with Booz Allen Hamilton totaling $4.8 million in annual spending and $21 million in total obligations.

American Dennis Coyle marks 1 year of detention in Afghanistan

    January 26, 2026 / 2:49 PM EST / CBS News

Monday marks one year since Dennis Coyle, a 64-year-old academic from Colorado, was taken by force from his Kabul apartment by the Taliban. His abduction came just six days after another American, Ryan Corbett, was released at the start of President Trump’s second term.

Coyle, who spent nearly two decades in Afghanistan conducting language research, is being held by the Taliban General Directorate of Intelligence in near-solitary confinement with no charges filed, according to his family. Coyle’s capture so soon after Corbett’s release illustrates the ongoing risks faced by Americans in Afghanistan, even those with long-standing legal status and deep ties to local communities.

“Dennis is a gentle, soft-spoken man who always listens deeply to others, often over a comforting cup of hot green tea, embodying the Afghan cultural emphasis of hospitality and respectful presence,” Molly Long, one of Coyle’s sisters, told CBS News. “In his nearly two decades in Afghanistan, Dennis faithfully honored the Afghan cultural values of hospitality and kindness.”

Coyle’s mother, Donna, 83, and his three sisters, Molly, Amy and Patti, have said the isolation has been crushing. He has missed births, family celebrations, and everyday moments. According to the family, Coyle is confined to a basement room, where he must ask permission to use the bathroom.

“This past year has been incredibly challenging for our family, as we’ve become entangled in the abhorrent practice of hostage diplomacy amid my brother’s wrongful detainment by the Taliban since January 27, 2025,” Long said. “We are deeply grateful for the broad bipartisan support we’ve received for President Trump to wield the formidable strength of the United States — as he has done so effectively in securing the release of over 90 hostages in Gaza, Venezuela, and around the world — to bring our brother home.”

“Our family is thankful and comforted that the president has personally committed to addressing this matter and taking a strong position on it, and we look forward to seeing Dennis again soon,” Long said.

Two Taliban officials insist Coyle is in good health and his “rights as a prisoner are protected.” They also claim formal court proceedings in his case would begin “soon.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In an interview in which Coyle’s case was raised last week, President Trump said he would “take a very strong position on it,” without elaborating further.

Last June, the U.S. government officially designated Coyle as wrongfully detained under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-Taking Accountability Act, a status that unlocks select government tools and elevates the priority of efforts to secure his release.

“The Taliban should immediately release Dennis Coyle and all Americans detained in Afghanistan and end its practice of hostage diplomacy,” the State Department told CBS News in a statement. “We remind all Americans — do not travel to Afghanistan. The Taliban has detained Americans for years and the U.S. Government cannot guarantee your safety.”

The United States does not recognize the Taliban as Afghanistan’s legitimate government and lacks a diplomatic presence in the country, complicating release negotiations that are often conducted by Qatar as an intermediary on behalf of the U.S.

A Qatari official declined to comment on any involvement in mediating Coyle’s case.

Acknowledging Coyle’s detention, Taliban chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told CBS News, “Negotiations have indeed taken place and are ongoing; however, both sides have not yet reached a final conclusion.”

“The Afghan government remains committed to what has been discussed with the United States. It should also be noted that Afghans have been wrongly detained by the United States and continue to be held there. Their fate, as well as the suffering of their families, is similar to that experienced by others in detention.”

“These talks should lead to concrete results and a final conclusion, ensuring that prisoners from both sides are released,” Mujahid said.

The Biden administration held negotiations with the Taliban to swap Americans detained in Afghanistan for Muhammad Rahim al Afghani, a Guantanamo Bay detainee alleged to have been an associate of Osama bin Laden, but the talks ultimately fell through. U.S. officials proposed releasing Rahim in exchange for George Glezmann, Ryan Corbett and Afghan-American Mahmoud Habibi, who was abducted in 2022, while the Taliban countered by seeking Rahim and two others while denying it held Habibi.

With the help of Qatari negotiators, Corbett and another American, William McKenty, were released last January in exchange for a Taliban figure who had been imprisoned for life on drug trafficking charges. Glezmann and another American, Faye Hall, were released in March, followed by a fifth American, Amir Amiri, who was freed last September.

Another senior Taliban official who spoke with CBS News on condition of anonymity referred to Rahim and claimed the U.S. offered a timeframe of three to six months for releasing Rahim. “When we released U.S. citizens last time, the U.S. committed to releasing the last Afghan detainee from Guantanamo. We have already made many concessions. That is enough.”

In addition to Coyle, at least one other American — a former U.S. army soldier whose purpose for traveling to Afghanistan is unclear — is believed to be currently held by the Taliban.

The State Department has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Habibi’s return.

“We are not aware of Habibi’s current status and we [have] not arrested him,” the second senior Taliban official told CBS News.

During the first Trump administration, the U.S. took steps to normalize relations with the Taliban, including troop withdrawal agreements and increased diplomatic contacts. Last September, President Trump expressed interest in regaining access to Bagram Air Base, underscoring a desire to maintain strategic leverage in Afghanistan, while Taliban officials have signaled interest in deeper engagement with the U.S.

That engagement has stalled to an extent as the U.S. has implemented sweeping restrictions that include suspending visa issuance and entry for Afghan nationals under recent national security proclamations, tightening vetting, and pausing processing of virtually all Afghan immigration and asylum applications. The moves have significantly reduced legal pathways for Afghans seeking entry or resettlement in the U.S.

The domestic policy debate intensified following a November 2025 shooting in Washington, D.C., in which an Afghan national evacuated to the U.S. after the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan allegedly killed a National Guardsman and wounded another. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, previously served for several years in Afghanistan’s elite “Zero Units,” paramilitary forces that operated under CIA direction.

Still, the Taliban and the United States remain in contact, Taliban sources said, noting former U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad visited Kabul earlier this month. White House counterterrorism advisor Seb Gorka and special envoy for hostage response Adam Boehler traveled to Afghanistan to broker Amiri’s release in September.

“We are very clear that we will not offer any further goodwill gestures,” one of the senior Taliban officials told CBS News.

Last September, the Trump administration created the State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention designation to target countries or groups that hold Americans without legal justification. Modeled after the state sponsors of terrorism designation, the measure would give the State Department authority to impose sanctions, export controls and travel restrictions on nationals of designated countries that detain Americans for political leverage, and to restrict where U.S. passports may be used. To date, no countries have been designated.
