US Embassy struck by drones in Saudi Arabia as Americans instructed to shelter in place

    Published March 3, 2026 7:47am EST / Fox News

Americans ordered to shelter in place across Saudi Arabia as Iran continues retaliatory attacks in the region

    By Rachel Wolf, Jennifer Griffin

The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh was hit by two drones from Iran on Monday as Americans in Saudi Arabia were instructed to shelter in place. The embassy was empty at the time of the hits and no injuries were reported as a result of the attack.

On Tuesday, the embassy issued a security alert saying that the shelter in place order for Jeddah, Riyadh and Dhahran remained in effect, and it added that U.S. citizens throughout Saudi Arabia were advised to remain indoors. It also advised U.S. citizens to “avoid the embassy until further notice” due to the attack.

“We advise all U.S. citizens to maintain a personal safety plan. Crises can happen unexpectedly while traveling or living abroad, and a good plan helps you think through potential scenarios and determine in advance the best course of action,” the embassy’s Tuesday alert read.

In the security alert, the embassy urged U.S. citizens to shelter in place, monitor its website for updates, enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), ensure their passports are valid for potential short-notice travel, remain aware of their surroundings, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, follow local authorities’ instructions and monitor official information sources for the latest updates.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a video posted on X, urged Americans in the Middle East to register with STEP, saying that it would allow them to see the latest safety and security guidance amid the “cowardly attacks” from Iran.

NETANYAHU INSISTS US AND ISRAEL’S STRIKES ON IRAN WON’T LEAD TO ‘ENDLESS WAR’

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry released a statement condemning the attack, saying “the repetition of this cowardly and unjustified attack blatantly violates all international norms and laws, including the 1949 Geneva Convention and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”

“The Kingdom emphasizes that the repetition of this flagrant Iranian behavior, which comes despite the Iranian authorities’ knowledge that the Kingdom has affirmed it will not allow its airspace or territory to be used to target Iran, will push the region toward further escalation,” the foreign ministry’s statement read.

Iran has launched attacks in the region against Israel and several countries that have U.S. interests in retaliation for the U.S. and Israel’s joint military offensive known as Operation Epic Fury. Saudi Arabia condemned the retaliation on Feb. 28.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia expresses its rejection and condemnation in the strongest terms of the blatant and cowardly Iranian attacks that targeted the Riyadh Region and the Eastern Province, which were successfully intercepted,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry’s Feb. 28 statement read. “These attacks cannot be justified under any pretext or in any way whatsoever, and they came despite the Iranian authorities’ knowledge that the Kingdom had affirmed it would not allow its airspace or territory to be used to target Iran.”

Amid the retaliatory strikes, the State Department has ordered the evacuation of non-emergency personnel and their families from Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, Qatar, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.

US urges Americans to leave Middle East amid air travel disruptions

    March 3, 2026 2:51 PM UTC / Reuters

WASHINGTON, March 3 (Reuters) – The United States on Tuesday said it was pulling out non-essential personnel from several U.S. missions across the Middle East and advised American citizens to immediately leave the region even as air travel remains severely disrupted due to U.S.-Israeli military operation on Iran.

The State Department announced that it had ordered the departure ‌of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and their family members from U.S. embassies in Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Jordan. Similar measures have already been taken for U.S. missions in Lebanon and Israel.

It has also on Monday urged American citizens across 16 countries in the Middle East to leave now using “available commercial transportation”. The U.S. embassy in Jerusalem said it was unable to offer assistance to Americans trying to leave.

“You told Americans to depart now via commercial means when you know many airports/airspace are closed,” Congressman Ted Lieu wrote in an X post and said Washington must immediately schedule U.S. government evacuation flights for the stranded Americans.

“Maybe you should have thought of a frickin’ plan first,” Lieu wrote.

U.S.-Israeli air war against Iran, which started on Saturday, has already sent shockwaves around the world, disrupting energy supplies and sending global air transport into chaos. Overnight, Iranian drones struck the U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia.

As Washington presses ahead with one of the most consequential military actions in recent history, the United States lacks Senate-confirmed ambassadors across many countries in the region including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, Egypt, Kuwait, Algeria and the UAE.

Major Gulf aviation hubs, including the world’s busiest international airport, Dubai – which normally handles over 1,000 flights a day – remained closed for ‌a fourth day on Tuesday, leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded. Ticket prices have soared.

“The U.S. Embassy is not in a position at this time to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel,” the embassy said in an X post and said citizens can sign up to the shuttles being operated by Israeli Ministry of Tourism to the Taba border crossing with Egypt.

It reiterated that Washington cannot ensure the safety of this route.

“The U.S. Embassy cannot make any recommendation (for or against) the Ministry of Tourism’s shuttle. If you choose to avail yourself of this option to depart, the U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety,” it said.

The State Department did not immediately respond to questions on how exactly Americans should be departing in the absence of available commercial flights.

On Monday, a U.S. official said the department activated an inter-agency task force to manage the situation and had launched a dedicated WhatsApp channel, which it said has amassed 15,000 followers. It did not mention any government assistance for evacuation of citizens.

Crude oil benchmarks rose about 7% on Tuesday, soaring for a third session as the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran widened. In a social media post overnight, Trump said there was a “virtually unlimited supply” of U.S. munitions and that “wars can be fought “forever,” and very successfully, using just these supplies.”

Dow plunges 1,100 points as investors fret over Iran war

    March 3, 2026 / 10:05 AM EST / CBS News

Stocks in the U.S. plummeted after the opening bell on Monday, as jittery investors reacted to the potential fallout from the war in Iran, including the impact on global oil supplies.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 1,110 points, or 2.2%, in early trading, while the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite each dropped 1.9%.

“Global financial markets are in disarray, anticipating a significant interruption in supplies of crude oil and natural gas because of President Trump’s war against Iran,” Carl Weinberg, chief economist at investment advisory firm High Frequency Economics, said in a note to clients. “The conflict is spreading, and confidence in the continuity of energy supplies is declining in parallel.”

Questions about how the war in Iran will impact energy markets and how long the conflict will last weighed heavily on investor sentiment as markets opened Tuesday, according to Bret Kenwell, an investment analyst at eToro. The weak start on Wall Street follows a turbulent trading day yesterday, which ended with a slight market rebound.

“Markets did a decent job shaking off Monday morning’s volatility, but the task gets harder today, with the S&P 500 hitting a fresh 2026 low,” he told CBS News. “Markets hate uncertainty, and as uncertainty deepens in the Middle East, investors are getting jittery.”

Wall Street is grappling with questions over the world’s oil supply as tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz bogs down. Roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply flows through the waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

Brent crude, the international standard, climbed $4.72, or 6.2%, to $80.83 per barrel. Benchmark U.S. crude rose $6.22, or 8.8%, to $77.45 a barrel, according to FactSet.

World’s largest acidic geyser erupts again in Yellowstone after years of silence

    March 3, 2026 / 10:27 AM EST / CBS News

The world’s largest acidic geyser has begun erupting again in Yellowstone after slumbering for over five years, the national park said Monday.

Echinus Geyser, located in the back basin of the Norris Geyser Basin at Yellowstone, is about 66 feet wide and is surrounded by rocks that resemble sea urchins. The geyser was named for those rocks, Yellowstone said, after mineralogist Albert Charles Peale noted the resemblance during a visit to the site in 1878.

Echinus is made acidic because of a mix of acidic gases and neutral waters, Yellowstone said. Many acidic geysers break down the rock that forms a geyser, but the acidity at Echinus is not strong enough to eat away at the surrounding stone. The acid is not concentrated, making it more like “orange juice or vinegar,” according to the park.

Instead, “that somewhat unique water chemistry results in interesting formations and compositions,” Yellowstone said, including the red color around the geyser pool and the spiny rocks.

The Echinus Geyser at Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone National Park

Echinus erupted often in the late half of the 20th century, and viewing platforms and benches allowed visitors to get closer to the site than any other geyser in the park, according to Yellowstone. In the 1970s, the geyser erupted every 40 to 80 minutes, and in the 1980s and 1990s, the eruptions could last as long as 90 minutes and reach as high as 75 feet. Sometimes the eruptions were even horizontal, soaking visitors with warm water.

The geyser’s activity started to wane in the early 2000s. In 2010, a temperature monitoring system installed in the geyser’s outflow channel allowed Yellowstone to monitor changes. The system recorded 15 sporadic eruptions between October 2010 and January 2011, and eruptions remained few and far between until October 2017. The eruptions were consistent for several weeks, but then “suddenly stopped,” Yellowstone said. There were a few eruptions over the following years, but the geyser was largely inactive.

In February 2026, the geyser started showing signs of activity. It erupted on Feb. 7, then again throughout the next week. There were regular 20-30 foot eruptions every few hours beginning on February 16.

In recent days, the geyser has had spikes of activity that tend to precede eruptions, but no actual eruptions, according to a temperature graph.

The park said it is unlikely the geyser will continue erupting into the summer, but there is no way to predict what may actually occur.

Amazon says drones hit 3 of its Middle East data centers amid Iran conflict

    Updated on: March 3, 2026 / 10:14 AM EST / CBS News

Amazon said drones struck three of its Middle East data centers, causing outages related to the “ongoing conflict in the Middle East.”

Drones directly struck two Amazon Web Services facilities in the United Arab Emirates, and a drone strike near an Amazon data center in Bahrain also damaged that facility, the company said in a post on Monday on AWS’s health dashboard.

“These strikes have caused structural damage, disrupted power delivery to our infrastructure, and in some cases required fire suppression activities that resulted in additional water damage,” AWS said.

Operations in the Middle East remain “significantly impaired,” AWS said, noting that “customers are experiencing elevated error rates and degraded availability for services.”

Amazon said it is working to restore services and repair physical damage to its facilities, while cautioning that the “broader operating environment in the Middle East remains unpredictable.”

The company encouraged its customers in the Middle East to back up data and consider migrating workloads to servers in other regions.

Shares of Amazon declined $3.40, or 1.6%, to $204.99 in early trading.

Americans urged to leave 14 Middle East countries amid Iran war “due to serious safety risks”

    Updated on: March 3, 2026 / 7:55 AM EST / CBS News

The U.S. State Department is urging Americans to leave 14 countries across the Middle East as the Iran war widened Tuesday with Iranian proxies being drawn in and Iran continuing its retaliatory fire.

Americans were urged late Monday to “depart now” from Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. They were urged to leave “using available commercial transportation, due to serious safety risks.”

More than a million Americans are believed to be in the region, a source said.

The State Department also told all non-emergency U.S. government personnel and the families of government personnel to leave Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Some U.S. embassies in the region are closed.

The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia was attacked by two drones, causing a small fire and limited damage, the Saudi Ministry of Defense said Monday on X. The embassy urged U.S. citizens in Riyadh and the key commercial cities of Dhahran and Jeddah to shelter in place. It said it would be closed Tuesday.

The U.S. Embassy in Kuwait also said Tuesday it was closed until further notice “due to ongoing regional tensions” and that consular appointments were canceled. It was closed a day after smoke was seen rising from the mission following Iranian attacks on the country.

The U.S. and Israel began attacking Iran on Saturday in what President Trump described on Monday as the “last best chance” to address the threat posed by Iran’s ballistic missiles and nuclear program. He articulated the reasons he said he decided to order strikes, bombing over 1,000 targets in the opening days of what he said could be a weeks-long conflict. They include destroying Iran’s missile capabilities, annihilating Iran’s navy and preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Six U.S. troops have been killed during the war, while 18 others have been seriously wounded. The Iranian Red Crescent said at least 787 people have been killed in Iran.

Now, Americans — and travelers who found themselves stranded amid regional airport and airspace closures — are trying to figure out how to leave the region.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said overnight, “We are getting a lot of requests regarding evacuating from Israel from American citizens who are currently in Israel or who have family here.”

In a lengthy post on social media, Huckabee outlined how people can depart Israel, noting “there are VERY LIMITED options.” He said the U.S. Embassy was not in a position to evacuate or directly help Americans leave the country.

The State Department said Americans who need the government’s help arranging travel could call +1-202-501-4444 from abroad or +1-888-407-4747 from the U.S. and Canada.
