Trump just reasserted his domination of the GOP. But that might not be good news for the party in 2026

    Analysis by Aaron Blake

Just two months after the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol — even as some Republicans harbored illusions about moving beyond Donald Trump — Sen. Lindsey Graham stepped forward with a reality check.

The South Carolina Republican likened the Trump-era GOP to a hostage situation and urged his party to make the best of its captivity.

“He could make the Republican Party something that nobody else I know can make it. He can make it bigger. He can make it stronger. He can make it more diverse,” Graham told “Axios on HBO.” Then the senator added: “And he also could destroy it.”

Graham said Trump both had a “dark side” and was capable of “magic” — and that it was best to hope the party got the magic.

Tuesday’s elections proved how right Graham was — even as the GOP is decidedly staring down the perils of a historically unpopular president’s dark side.

Five months ago, Indiana state Senate Republicans delivered perhaps the most stunning rebuke of Trump to date from members of his own party. They called into question his domination of the party by firmly rejecting his new congressional map — and his pronounced threats over it.

But on Tuesday, Trump successfully sanctioned their apostasy.

Trump and his political operation unseated at least five of seven state senators they had targeted for voting against that map. (One primary race remains unresolved. One senator survived.)

The significance of those defeats shouldn’t be understated. Most lawmakers never have to worry about losing a general election in today’s polarized age, which makes primaries their only real hurdle to reelection. Trump has used this fact to great effect. He’s enforced loyalty by making life hell for any Republican who runs afoul of him, and he’s ushered plenty of them out the door — often via forced retirement.

Tuesday showed that even a politically diminished Trump still has the juice to end a Republican’s career if they don’t toe his line.

“Sometimes you can vote your feelings, but sometimes you need to vote with the party,” James Blair, a top Trump political adviser, told CNN’s Dana Bash on Wednesday. “As the elected party leader, the president gets to decide which vote is which, and he is always clear and up-front about it. Nobody should be surprised about any of this.”

And that message won’t be lost on Republicans who might have thought, like some did after January 6, that the paradigm had shifted. They’ll continue to live in fear of him.

But while this is great news for Trump’s political capital, it is decidedly less great news for a GOP whose midterm hopes the president is sinking.

In any normal midterm year where the president had an approval rating sinking into the mid-30s, you’d see lawmakers tripping over themselves to create some distance from him and trying to adjust the party’s political course. Think George W. Bush in 2006 and 2008; he and his vice president didn’t even attend the 2008 Republican National Convention.

But Republicans are doing quite the opposite, because they feel they must to survive.

Perhaps nothing drives this home like Trump’s ballroom.

This issue is a political albatross for the GOP and has been for six months. It’s emblematic of Trump’s politically bizarre insistence on slapping his name and likeness all over Washington and building fancy things, even as Americans see him neglecting their cost-of-living concerns.

But over the past week, Republicans haven’t just humored the project; they’ve embraced it. Graham and others proposed making taxpayers pay for it (despite Trump’s promises that taxpayers would pay nothing). And now Senate Republicans have slipped $1 billion into an unrelated bill to shore up security for the ballroom.

This would seem to be political malpractice six months before the midterms, but Trump demands it. That’s why we’ve seen some politically safe lawmakers use the issue to curry favor with the president — even though it could work against their more vulnerable brethren.

The Iran war — and Trump’s haphazard approach to it — presents similar dynamics.

On Tuesday, he sent out his secretaries of defense and state and the chairman of his Joint Chiefs of Staff to detail and espouse the supposed strategic brilliance of “Project Freedom,” the questionable effort to try to guide ships through the logjammed Strait of Hormuz amid Iranian threats. But then, mere hours later, Trump said the project was paused as he yet again suggested a peace deal could be near.

Trump has suggested a deal was close many times before, but it’s yet to arrive and the details of what it could entail remain scant. He’s also repeatedly bluffed. So it’s possible this is merely the latest head-scratching strategic moment in a war that is fast becoming a major liability for Trump and the GOP.

Polling last week showed 61% of Americans labeled the war a mistake after just two months; the Iraq war took three years for the “mistake” number to reach that high, and the Vietnam war took six.

But through it all, congressional Republicans have demonstrated vanishingly little interest in asserting their constitutional powers to rein in Trump’s war powers — or in at least trying to convince the White House to change course. Most of them seem paralyzed, as if they have no choice.

And Tuesday showed why they feel that way.

So it appears most of the GOP will keep pushing Trump’s highly unpopular ballroom and his highly unpopular war.

They’ll excuse his attacks on a highly popular American pope and legitimize his legal retribution campaign, which Americans appear to view rather dimly.

They’ll scramble to draw him more GOP congressional districts, even though some new districts could backfire on the party and result in marginal gains in 2026 — not nearly enough to beat back an increasingly likely blue wave.

None of it appears to be doing Republicans any political favors in the midterms, but it’s what Trump demands, so they do it.

Because what else is a hostage to do?

Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro has taken a critical tone toward maverick Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., urging him to “get back to what he was elected to do” as a Democrat.

While speaking on CNN this week, Shapiro, another rumored 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, appeared exasperated about Fetterman amid reports that he is receiving pressure to jump ship on the party.

“Look, I don’t know what Sen. Fetterman is going to do,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “I know that Pennsylvanians voted for a Democrat to represent them in the United States Senate.”

“So, I think he needs to honor that and continue with his service to Pennsylvania, and, hopefully, get back to what he was elected to do and reflect the will of the people,” he added.

KNIVES OUT FOR FETTERMAN: MAVERICK SENATOR JOINS LONG LINE OF DEMS PUNISHED FOR BREAKING FROM LEFT

Josh Shapiro (right), for siding with President Donald Trump and the Republicans on several recent issues.(Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images; Michael M. Santiago/Getty Images)

Fetterman’s relationship with Shapiro has cooled since his election. The senator wrote in his book, “Unfettered,” released last November, that he and Shapiro “no longer speak” with one another. He wrote that the relationship deteriorated into an “ugliness” from which “we have never recovered.”

Fetterman has stirred up significant controversy by backing portions of Trump’s agenda. Notably, Fetterman is one of just six Democratic senators who represent states that President Donald Trump won in the 2024 election.

He was the lone Democrat to vote in favor of advancing Trump’s new pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security, former Sen. Markwayne Mullin. During the prolonged government shutdown fight last year, Fetterman voted with Republicans to reopen the government, explaining his vote was choosing “country over party.”

In 2025, he voted with Republicans about 26 percent of the time, according to Congress Vote Tracker.

This has left many in the Democratic Party frustrated, including Shapiro. On a recent episode of the “Talk Easy” podcast with Sam Fragoso, Shapiro asserted, “I’ve got no beef with John” but said, “John’s got a lot of questions that I think he needs to answer for the people of Pennsylvania.”

“I think there’s a lot of people who want to know kind of what happened, why he does some of the things he does,” he continued.

In February, Shapiro declined to say whether he will support Fetterman if he seeks re-election in 2028, saying, “I don’t know if he’s running for re-election. I think he needs to decide if he’s running, and then we’ll make a decision from there.”

FETTERMAN BREAKS WITH DEMOCRATS OVER SHUTDOWN, VOWS TO PUT ‘COUNTRY OVER PARTY’

Shapiro is not the only major Democratic leader who has criticized Fetterman in recent months. Democratic National Committee Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta slammed Fetterman in April, labeling the senator “a mess.”

“Almost every day now my US Senator comes on this site to attack his constituents and many people who worked hard to elect him. Suggesting that they have ‘derangement syndrome’ for opposing this administration. You’re a mess @JohnFetterman,” Kenyatta wrote in an X post.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has also called out Fetterman over his response to the war in Iran and said on CNN in April that he “knows better.”

This comes asPolitico reported Monday that some Republicans were trying to persuade Fetterman to change his party affiliation.

A man who allegedly fired at Secret Service agents near the Washington Monument earlier this week has been charged in connection with the shooting.

The man, Michael Marx, faces three charges, according to the criminal complaint, including assaulting officers with a dangerous weapon, using or discharging a firearm during a crime of violence and unlawful possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime.

A Secret Service special agent described in an affidavit filed Wednesday how the shooting unfolded, alleging that the suspect was carrying a weapon and walked “along the path” of Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade as it passed by. A source previously told CNN that Vance’s motorcade had diverted from its intended destination out of an abundance of caution while his security team assessed the situation.

The man ran when approached by Secret Service and then turned around to fire in the direction of one of the officers, the Secret Service special agent alleged in his affidavit. USSS Deputy Director Matt Quinn told reporters during a press conference Monday that the man wounded a juvenile bystander when firing at Secret Service.

Secret Service officers then fired at the suspect, hitting him “in the hand, left arm, and upper abdomen,” the special agent said in the affidavit. When the officers attempted to provide aid to the suspect, who had “collapsed” on the ground, he spit at the officers, the special agent wrote.

A Texas driver’s license was found on the suspect, according to the affidavit.

He was then transported to a local hospital and in the ambulance, he said, “F**k the White House” and “Kill me, kill me, kill me,” the Secret Service special agent alleged in the affidavit. US Attorney for Washington, DC, Jeanine Pirro earlier shared that the suspect had made those comments during an interview with ABC News on Tuesday.

It is unclear what the full context of his alleged statement was. CNN has not identified a lawyer for the suspect.

“President Trump was not in any danger,” Quinn told CNN in a statement on Monday. He also said at the time there was no “known nexus between the incident and the White House.”

The shooting came less than two weeks after Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from California, was accused of opening fire at the DC hotel where the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner was being held. Allen was charged with attempting to assassinate Trump. His arraignment is scheduled for Monday.

Fox News’ Danamarie McNicholl reports on the developments on ‘Fox Report.’

Nathaniel Sanders II, 32, is facing federal charges after allegedly threatening to kill President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former Attorney General Pam Bondi, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida announced Tuesday.

Sanders, who appeared in federal court Monday, allegedly sent numerous social media posts between January and April that threatened to kill the three leaders.

Sanders allegedly threatened to bomb the White House and mentioned first lady Melania Trump in social media posts while referencing the fact that he owned a gun, according to a criminal complaint filed in the Southern District of Florida.

“Imma bomb the (expletive) White House,” he posted on X, according to the complaint.

“I don’t know what to do Melania, like, all I got is a gun. It’s the only thing I can use now is a gun,” Sanders said in a video posted to Instagram, per the complaint.

Another video allegedly targeted Rubio. “Like when I get my hands on him, I’m gonna hurt him. Simple as that,” Sanders said.

“Threats against public officials are not political speech,” U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones said in a statement.

“They are serious federal crimes that endanger public safety and the rule of law. The complaint alleges that this defendant repeatedly threatened to assassinate the President of the United States and other senior officials,” he added. “Those allegations will now be tested in court. Our Office will continue working with the U.S. Secret Service and our law enforcement partners to investigate threats, protect public officials, and ensure that those who violate federal law are held accountable.”

The U.S. attorney’s office charged Sanders with threatening the president of the United States and transmitting threats in interstate commerce. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.

Investigations into his threats involve the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Capitol Police, U.S. Diplomatic Security Service and Miami Beach Police Department.

“Making threats against the President of the United States is a federal crime, and we treat it with the seriousness it deserves every time,” Special Agent in Charge Michael Townsend of the U.S. Secret Service, Miami Field Office also said.

“It does not matter where the threat is made or what platform is used, our agents will identify you, investigate you, and work alongside our federal and local partners to bring charges when appropriate. We remain relentless in our mission to protect the President and to act swiftly against anyone who puts others at risk.”

Sanders’ arrest was the result of a protected intelligence investigation which highlighted the efficacy of the Secret Service to identify threats “before they can make a plan,” a Secret Service spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

Fox News Digital contacted the U.S. Attorney for Florida’s Southern District for additional comment.

U.S. to press allies to bolster counterterrorism efforts under new strategy

    May 6, 2026 / 12:03 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington— U.S. counterterrorism officials will meet with international partners on Friday to ask how allies can boost efforts to combat terrorist threats, especially from Iran and in the Strait of Hormuz, a White House official said.

A new counterterrorism strategy, signed by President Trump on Tuesday, seeks to crack down on Islamist terror groups, drug cartels and violent domestic political groups.

Seb Gorka, the senior director for counterterrorism at the White House National Security Council, told reporters that the U.S. will be seeking more from allied countries that want to be viewed as “serious” nations.

“We have a very simple metric: if you want to be measured as a serious nation, whether it is protecting tankers in the Strait of Hormuz or whether it is working against jihadi threats in the Sahel of Africa, we expect more from you. The idea that there is one hyper-power in the world, America, and it will protect all from every threat, is untenable. We reject the concept of global police officer,” Gorka said.

“We will be discussing the new counterterrorism strategy and working together to say, ‘OK, how can you step up to the plate in ways which complement what we wish to achieve?’”

Gorka outlined the United States’ new 16-page strategy, saying it prioritizes drug cartels and Islamist terror groups, as well as violent political groups whose ideologies are “anti-American, radically pro-gender or anarchist, such as antifa.”

He declined to describe classified steps that will be taken, but said the administration will work to identify threats — and leaders and followers of violent or terrorist groups — and neutralize them by law enforcement efforts, kinetic means or by strangling their financial resources.

The strategy aims to incapacitate cartels until they can no longer bring drugs or trafficking victims into the U.S., Gorka said.

The administration will put pressure on the top five Islamist jihadi groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood, which has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization, until they can no longer recruit terrorists, Gorka said. He said “stragglers” from ISIS in Syria and Iran have relocated to African nations, seeking “ungoverned space.”

The U.S. strategy also aims to cripple left-wing extremist efforts before innocent Christians and conservatives are killed, he said. It isn’t targeted at specific labeled groups, Gorka added, but targets anyone who thinks violence for political purposes is justified.

Gorka said: “We see a threat, we will respond to it, and we will crush it, whether it is the cartels, the jihadists, or violent left-wing extremists like antifa and like the transgender killers, the non-binary, the left-wing radicals who killed my friend Charlie Kirk.”

“We will not permit politically motivated violence in the United States from either side of the aisle, but the sad truth is the left has far more politically motivated assassinations or attempted assassinations, to its credit in recent years, not the right.”

WASHINGTON, May 6 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump has signed a new national counterterrorism strategy that focuses in part on the “neutralization” of hemispheric threats and incapacitating cartel operations, top ‌White House adviser Sebastian Gorka said on Wednesday.

Gorka, the White House counterterrorism director, told reporters Trump signed the document on Tuesday “driven by the principle that America is our homeland and must be protected.”

The United States has destroyed dozens of boats as part of what Washington has called a counternarcotics campaign linked to an operation that included the ouster of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro this year.

“Our new counterterrorism strategy first prioritizes the neutralization of hemispheric terror threats by incapacitating cartel operations until these groups are incapable of bringing their drugs, their members and their trafficked victims into the United States,” Gorka said.

Within the U.S., Gorka said the strategy will also focus on identifying and neutralizing what he called “violent, secular political groups whose ideology is anti-American, radically transgender or anarchist, such as Antifa.”

“We will use all the ‌tools constitutionally available to us to map them at home, identify their membership, map their ties to international organizations like Antifa, and use law enforcement tools to cripple them operationally before they can maim or kill the innocent,” he said.

Gorka said U.S. counterterrorism officials will meet with international partners on Friday to ask how allies can increase efforts to combat terrorist threats, especially from Iran and in the Strait of Hormuz.

After the assassination in September of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, White House aides called for a coordinated effort against unnamed left-wing groups accused of promoting violence.

Gorka said the strategy would also focus on right-wing groups that foment violence.

He said the strategy also focuses on maintaining pressure on what he called the global jihadi movement, including the “targeting and destruction” of groups like al Qaeda.

FBI searches business, other locations associated with Democratic Virginia state senator

FBI agents executed a search warrant Wednesday morning on Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas’ personal office, a marijuana shop she co-owns and other locations, according to a source familiar with the probe and news footage of the law enforcement actions.

Lucas, a heavy hitter for Democrats in the state and president pro tempore of the Virginia Senate, has recently focused her attention on redrawing the state’s congressional maps, which could help deliver her party additional seats in the upcoming midterm elections.

An FBI spokesperson told CNN the warrant being executed in Lucas’ hometown of Portsmouth was signed by a federal judge but would not comment on the target or scope of the investigation.

CNN has reached out to Lucas for comment. Lucas told Fox News: “I don’t know what’s going on.”

A person close to the state senator told CNN that federal agents were there when she arrived in the parking lot outside of her office, and they seized electronics and other items.

At least one marijuana dispensary, a shop near the senator’s office that she co-owns, was raided in connection with the search warrant.

Lucas, 82, has been an advocate of legalizing marijuana and has proposed using tax revenue from marijuana sales to help cover federal spending cuts that have affected Virginia under the Trump administration.

In a statement to CNN, a spokesperson for Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger acknowledged the raids but would not comment further.

“The Governor is aware of today’s law enforcement operation in Portsmouth,” the spokesperson said, ” In the absence of additional details, the Governor will not be commenting on a federal investigation at this time.”

Don Scott, speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, said in a statement that “people should take this with a grain of salt and allow the facts to come out before jumping to conclusions” given the “politicization of this administration.”

US Rep. Bobby Scott, a Virginia Democrat, noted in a statement that the searches come two weeks after Lucas led the successful redistricting effort.

“While we await the full facts of the investigation, it must be acknowledged that this FBI raid occurs in the broader context of President Trump’s repeated abuse of the Department of Justice to target his perceived political opponents,” Scott said in the statement.

Following her redistricting victory, Lucas took to social media to troll President Donald Trump in a series of posts, including one in which she’s wearing boxing gloves.

WASHINGTON, May 6 (Reuters) – The head of the Federal Aviation Administration will face questions on Capitol Hill on May 19 after a report found systemic failures by the agency led ‌to a devastating mid-air collision that killed 67 people last year.

The January 2025 collision between an American Airlines regional jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport was the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster in more than two decades. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford will appear before a Senate aviation subcommittee to answer questions about the agency’s efforts to address a series of National Transportation Safety Board recommendations.

The hearing comes as the House and Senate have passed competing bills to address air safety.

“Our aviation system is fragile, as demonstrated by the several close calls, and we cannot afford any delays in implementation of these safety standards,” said Republican Senator Jerry Moran, chair of the aviation subcommittee.

The FAA did not immediately comment.

The NTSB determined the accident was caused by the FAA’s decision to allow helicopters to fly near the airport with no ‌safeguards to separate them from airplanes and its failure to review data and act on recommendations to move helicopter traffic away from the airport.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy rebuked the FAA, shedding light on serious communication, culture and safety issues surrounding the 26th busiest U.S. airport, which has the single busiest U.S. runway and is regularly used by members of Congress.

The NTSB made more than 30 recommendations to the FAA, citing a series of failures before the Washington crash.

Since 2021, there have been 15,200 air separation incidents near Reagan airport between commercial airplanes and helicopters, including 85 close-call events.

The NTSB found issues with how the FAA handles traffic at Reagan and that it rejected advice to add hot spots to a helicopter route chart. Homendy said the FAA also did not review the helicopter routes annually as required and had routes that were not designed to ensure proper separation.

Feds charge Texas man who allegedly shot at Secret Service agent on National Mall

    May 6, 2026 12:51 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington— The Justice Department on Wednesday charged a Texas man with assault and weapons offenses, after he allegedly fired his gun toward a Secret Service agent and wounded a bystander on the National Mall.

Michael Marx, 45, of Midland, Texas, faces charges of assaulting federal officers with a dangerous weapon, using and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The incident took place on May 4 near the Washington Monument, as the motorcade for Vice President JD Vance was departing the White House and passing through the area of 15th Street and Independence Avenue SW, which is heavily populated with tourists.

“We will prove this defendant carried an illegal firearm into the heart of Washington, D.C., opened fire at Secret Service officers near a crowded intersection, and shot an innocent bystander who was simply crossing the street with his family,” U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said in a statement.

An affidavit filed by a Secret Service agent in federal court lays out the alleged details of the incident. The filing says a plainclothes agent spotted Marx walking along the sidewalk, “appearing to conceal a firearm on the right side of his body.”

Uniformed officers responded, and encountered Marx among a group of other pedestrians at an intersection, according to the affidavit. Still images from surveillance cameras included in the filing show three marked Secret Service vehicles pulling up to a crosswalk:

The affidavit says that as Secret Service officers approached Marx, he allegedly “reached into his waistband and produced a firearm while running across the street.” Once he crossed the street, the affidavit says, Marx “turned and fired his firearm in the direction” of a Secret Service officer while a civilian witness was behind the officer. That shot hit the unnamed witness in the leg, according to the affidavit.

The Secret Service officer returned fire, charging documents allege, hitting Marx in the “hand, left arm, and upper abdomen.”

While Marx was being transported to the hospital, the affidavit alleges that he “made a statement to the effect of ‘F**k the White House’ and ‘Kill me, kill me, kill me.’”

The charging document says Marx did not have a license to carry a gun in D.C. and was previously convicted of drug trafficking in Florida in 2011.

There was not a future court appearance listed on public court dockets as of Wednesday afternoon.

Obama branded ‘classless moron’ for AG jab at Trump as ‘wingman’ comments resurface

    May 6, 2026 2:38pm EDT / Fox News

Obama told Colbert the attorney general is ‘the people’s lawyer’ and not ‘the president’s consiglieri’

    By Charles Creitz

Former President Barack Obama laughed as he took multiple veiled digs at President Donald Trump during an interview with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

The White House called former President Barack Obama “a classless moron” suffering from “a severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome” after Obama launched a thinly veiled criticism at President Donald Trump by saying a president should not direct the attorney general to prosecute individuals.

“He is a total disgrace for all the division he has sowed upon this country, and history will not judge him well,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said of the former president. “The only special interest guiding the Trump Administration’s decision-making is the best interest of the American people. Only pathetic trainwrecks like Stephen Colbert would waste their time interviewing one of the worst presidents in history on his failing show.”

Obama made the remark during an interview with “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert, who asked what restrictions should be placed on presidential power. Obama’s Tuesday appearance comes during the show’s final weeks.

“The White House shouldn’t be able to direct the attorney general to go around prosecuting whoever the president wants prosecuted,” Obama said. “The idea is that the attorney general is the people’s lawyer, it’s not the president’s consiglieri.”

“You can’t have a situation in which whoever’s in charge of the government starts using that to go after the political enemies and reward their friends, right?” Obama continued.

Obama discussed his relationship with Attorney General Eric Holder, who served in his administration for six years. He said he consulted with Holder regularly, but only on “broader policy issues.”

“That’s different than who do you charge, what case do you bring,” Obama said.

Trump supporters on social media criticized Obama’s comments, pointing to previous remarks by Holder describing their close relationship. In a 2013 radio interview with Tom Joyner, Holder described himself as Obama’s “wingman” when answering a question about his plans to leave the administration.

“I’m still enjoying what I’m doing, there’s still work to be done.I’m still the president’s wingman, so I’m there with my boy.So we’ll see,” Holder said.

During Holder’s tenure as attorney general, he was held in contempt by the House for failing to produce documents related to an investigation into Operation Fast and Furious, an operation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that led to Mexican drug cartels gaining access to illegal guns. Holder has previously faced scrutiny for opting against seeking criminal prosecution, but he was never accused of pursuing criminal charges on Obama’s behalf.

Obama’s remarks come as acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicted former FBI Director James Comey for allegedly threatening the president’s life based on an Instagram post showing a seashell formation spelling out “86-47,” a reference to removing Trump from office. The latest charges follow the dismissal of charges brought against Comey by the Justice Department last year.

Aside from Comey, several of Trump’s other political foes have been indicted, including former national security advisor John Bolton and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The Justice Department had also opened criminal investigations into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.

Trump posted a message on Truth Social in September directly addressed to former Attorney General Pam Bondi requesting that she prosecute several of his political foes.
