Novartis settles with woman’s estate over use of her “stolen” cells to advance medicine

    February 27, 2026 / 5:34 AM EST / AP

Novartis has settled a lawsuit by the estate of Henrietta Lacks that alleged the pharmaceutical giant unjustly profited off her cells, which were taken from her tumor without her knowledge in 1951 and reproduced in labs to enable major medical advances, including the polio vaccine.

Details of the agreement, which was finalized in federal court in Maryland this month, aren’t public.

The Lacks family and Swiss-based Novartis said in a joint statement that they are “pleased they were able to find a way to resolve this matter filed by Henrietta Lacks’ Estate outside of court” but aren’t commenting further.

It’s the second settlement in lawsuits filed by the estate that accused biomedical businesses of reaping rewards from a racist medical system that took advantage of Black patients like Lacks.

The settlement ends litigation between Novartis, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, and the estate of Lacks, a mother who died of cervical cancer at age 31 and was buried in an unmarked grave.

The 2024 lawsuit had sought from Novartis “the full amount of its net profits obtained by commercializing the HeLa cell line,” which the complaint said had been cultivated from “stolen cells.”

Doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital took Lacks’ cervical cells in 1951 without her knowledge, and the tissue taken from her tumor before she died became the first human cells to continuously grow and reproduce in lab dishes. HeLa cells became a cornerstone of modern medicine, enabling countless scientific and medical innovations, including the development of genetic mapping and even COVID-19 vaccines, but the Lacks family wasn’t compensated along the way despite that incalculable impact on science and medicine.

Johns Hopkins said it never sold or profited from the cell lines, but many companies have patented ways of using them.

In 2023, Lacks’ estate reached an undisclosed settlement with the biotechnology company Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Lawyers for the family argued in that case that the company continued to commercialize the results long after the origins of the HeLa cell line became well known and unjustly enriched itself off Lacks’ cells.

There are other pending lawsuits by the Lacks estate. Just over a week after the estate settled the case with Thermo Fisher Scientific, attorneys for the estate filed a lawsuit against Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical in Baltimore federal court, the same venue as the previously settled case. Litigation with Ultragenyx as well as Viatris, a pharmaceutical company, remain active.

Attorneys for the family have indicated there could be additional complaints filed.

Lacks was a poor tobacco farmer from southern Virginia who married and moved with her husband to Turner Station, a historically Black community outside Baltimore. They were raising five children when doctors discovered a tumor in Lacks’ cervix and saved a sample of her cancer cells collected during a biopsy.

While most cell samples died shortly after being removed from the body, her cells survived and thrived in laboratories. They became known as the first immortalized human cell line because scientists could cultivate them indefinitely, meaning researchers anywhere could reproduce studies using identical cells.

The remarkable science involved – and the impact on the Lacks family, some of whom had chronic illnesses and no health insurance – were documented in a bestselling book by Rebecca Skloot, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” which was published in 2010. Oprah Winfrey portrayed her daughter in an HBO movie about the story.

    • Summary
    • Most Americans disagree with Trump’s economic claims, poll shows
    • Cost of living is top concern for voters in upcoming elections
    • Many unaware of Trump’s cost-of-living policies, tariffs widely known

WASHINGTON, Feb 27 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump says the U.S. economy is booming and that he has fixed inflation. But most Americans, including many in his Republican Party, do not see things that way, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

“This is the golden age of America,” Trump said in his State of the Union address on Tuesday. “The roaring economy is roaring like never before.”

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, completed on Monday, showed 68% of people disagree with a statement that “the U.S. economy is booming,” a claim Trump has repeatedly made since returning to office in January 2025.

Republicans in the survey were sharply divided on how well the economy is doing, a warning sign for the party ahead of the November 3 midterm elections when Trump’s party will defend majorities in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Some 56% of Republicans thought the economy was booming, while 43% disagreed.

    ‘WE ARE STRUGGLING’

In Dickson, Tennessee, west of Nashville, Marcus Tripp wishes Trump would prioritize making the country more prosperous over his aggressive effort to deport unauthorized immigrants.

“The economy is what he needs to be focused on,” said Tripp, 53, who works in manufacturing in a district represented by Republican U.S. Representative Matt Van Epps, whose special election last fall turned out to be more competitive than expected as Democrats rallied to support the challenger.

“Even as a two-income household, we are struggling,” said Tripp, who leans Republican. “I am worried more about how much my rent and everything is going up than I am about whether the guy down the street has citizenship documents or not.”

Americans interviewed in the Reuters/Ipsos poll cited the cost of living as the top issue that will determine how they will vote in November’s midterms. They also rejected assertions that price increases were no longer a problem, a claim made by Trump last month when he said “inflation has been defeated” and that Americans currently see “virtually no inflation.”

Republicans and Democrats will begin to pick their candidates for November’s elections in primaries that begin on Tuesday in Texas, North Carolina and Arkansas.

    WORRIES ABOUT COST OF LIVING

Only 16% of poll respondents agreed with a statement that “there is hardly any inflation in the U.S.”

Eighty-two percent of respondents overall – and the same share of independents – disagreed, as did 72% of Republicans. Democrats, who have become more bearish on the economy since Trump returned to the White House, overwhelmingly rejected notions of an economic boom or vanquished inflation.

Many Americans are unaware of the policies and proposals Trump has put forward to limit increases in the cost of living, the Reuters/Ipsos poll found. Some 44% of respondents had never heard of the White House plan unveiled last month to restrict large investors, such as investment firms, from buying single-family homes. Forty-eight percent had never heard of Trump’s proposal to cap credit card interest rates at 10%.

Americans were considerably more aware of Trump’s pre-eminent economic policy push of raising tariffs on imported goods, with 78% saying they had heard at least a little about tariff hikes. Some 54% of respondents – including 69% of Democrats and 42% of Republicans – said they expected tariffs to raise the cost of living.

“I’m not impressed by what’s going on domestically,” Tiffany Ritchie of Corpus Christi, Texas, said of Trump’s approach to the economy. Ritchie, 50, considers herself an independent and voted for Trump in 2024.

U.S. clears some diplomatic staff to leave Israel as tension with Iran continues despite talks

    February 27, 2026 / 6:51 AM EST / CBS News

The U.S. State Department authorized non-emergency personnel and their family members to leave Israel on Friday, citing unspecified “safety risks.”

The change in guidance from the State Department comes as the U.S. continues negotiations with Iran on a potential nuclear deal, which Tehran hopes will avert a potential American military assault President Trump has prepared for with a massive deployment to the Middle East.

After the latest round of indirect talks brokered by Oman, held Thursday in Geneva, Iran’s top diplomat said there was some progress toward a new agreement on his country’s nuclear enrichment program, calling it “one of the most serious and longest rounds of talks” to date.

President Trump has threatened to attack Iran if no deal to rein in its nuclear program can be reached, and several outside experts told CBS News Thursday that the negotiations appear unlikely to yield an agreement both sides can live with, making an American attack likely, possibly soon.

The State Department did not mention Iran in its latest travel guidance on Friday, but said it was authorizing the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and family members from Israel due to safety risks, noting that, “in response to security incidents and without advance notice, the U.S. Embassy may further restrict or prohibit U.S. government employees and their family members from traveling to certain areas of Israel, the Old City of Jerusalem, and the West Bank.”

“Persons may wish to consider leaving Israel while commercial flights are available,” the State Department said. Flights to and from Israeli and other regional airports are often halted when the risk of military action increases.

U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, have led the negotiations with Iran on behalf of the Trump administration, and there was no readout from them or the White House on the discussions Thursday in Geneva.

While few outside analysts see much reason for optimism, Iran — and the Omanis, who are brokering the talks aimed at averting U.S. strikes that many believe could snowball into a wider regional conflict — tried to paint Thursday’s meetings as productive.

“Regarding some issues, there is now an understanding, and on others, it’s natural that we have differences,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who led his country’s delegation in Geneva. “However, there was perhaps more seriousness on both sides than before, with the aim of reaching a negotiated solution.”

“It was agreed that technical teams will start their work in Vienna on Monday to conduct technical reviews at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with the help of its experts, in order to develop a framework for addressing some technical issues,” Araghchi said, adding that following consultations by both negotiating teams back in their respective capitals, “we will have the fourth round of negotiations next week.”

Mr. Trump has said, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reiterated, that the president would prefer a negotiated solution to the standoff over Iran’s crippled nuclear program, which Rubio has accused Tehran of trying to rebuild in the wake of U.S. strikes in June last year that seriously damaged the country’s three primary enrichment facilities.

President Trump has not made clear whether he would accept a new agreement that curbs Iran’s nuclear program without addressing other U.S. grievances, most notably Iran’s stockpile of conventional ballistic missiles and its support for armed “proxy groups” in the region.

Vice President JD Vance told The Washington Post on Thursday that Mr. Trump was still considering military strikes “to ensure Iran isn’t going to get a nuclear weapon,” but that he also remained open to solving “the problem diplomatically.”

Vance downplayed warnings from many nations in the region, including some of America’s close partners in the Mideast, that any U.S. strike could lead to a war that draws in other nations – and one that cannot be quickly ended.

“The idea that we’re going to be in a Middle Eastern war for years with no end in sight — there is no chance that will happen,” Vance was quoted as saying by The Post.

When Mr. Trump ordered the strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in June, joining Israel in attacking the country, Tehran responded by launching missiles at the biggest U.S. military base in the Middle East. Mr. Trump indicated that the retaliation had been telegraphed to the U.S. in advance, and the missiles were intercepted.

Iran had, 10 days earlier, fired a barrage of missiles at Israel in response to its attacks, including one that slipped through Israel’s sophisticated air defenses and landed in the heart of its capital, Tel Aviv.

While Israel inflicted serious damage on Iran’s ballistic missile capacity during the 12-day war in June, some outside observers believe Iran has restocked its arsenal and has hundreds of rockets capable of targeting Israel and American military assets in the region.

On Thursday, retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, a CBS News contributor who served as national security adviser in the first Trump administration, predicted that the Trump administration would not find enough common ground with Iran’s hardline Islamic rulers to avert a new military clash.

“The ideology of the theocratic dictatorship and its permanent hostility to the United States and Israel will result in intransigence and an inability to make concessions on enrichment, the missile program, and support for terrorist organizations,” he said.

McMaster, who commanded U.S. forces in the Middle East during his career in the Army, said rather than another limited strike like June’s “Operation Midnight Hammer,” which just hit Iranian nuclear facilities, “I think that the opening campaign will be extensive, not a ‘signaling’ exercise. Iran will have very limited options to retaliate and expand the conflict due to U.S. extensive air defense, offensive counter-air, and long-range strike capabilities.”

Friday’s U.S. travel advisory update on Israel came as a long list of other countries issued similar warnings for their citizens to leave the country, and Iran.

Australia told dependents of its diplomats in Israel and neighboring Lebanon to leave those countries on Wednesday, with voluntary departures offered to dependents in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Jordan, as well, citing the “deteriorating security situation in the region.”

India, Brazil, Singapore and at least six European nations have, since mid-January, warned their citizens against travel to Iran and urged those in the country to leave, and China’s state-run media said Friday that Chinese nationals in Iran should also evacuate.
