Khamenei’s ‘target-rich’ funeral is Iran’s biggest security gamble, sends message to US: expert

    June 14, 2026 5:16pm EDT / Fox News

Counterterrorism expert says the regime is reframing the conflict by burying its leader as a ‘victor, not a victim’

Appointment Ali Khamenei’s son as new Iranian supreme leader may be a sign conflict is far from done

Fox News correspondent Nate Foy reports on Iran choosing a new Supreme Leader as Israel continues to face missile and drone attacks on ‘Special Report.’

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

Iran’s decision to hold a July funeral for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is a high-stakes bet that any emerging peace deal with the United States will hold, potentially creating a “target-rich” gathering of Tehran’s most isolated leaders, a counterterrorism expert warned Sunday.

The multi-day state funeral, announced by Iranian state media on June 13, is scheduled to begin in Tehran on July 4 and end with Khamenei’s burial in the holy city of Mashhad on July 9, Reuters reported.

According to Dr. Omar Mohammed, director of the Antisemitism Research Initiative at the Program on Extremism at George Washington University, the timing serves as a deliberate message to America.

“A mass funeral is the most target-rich event this regime could stage, and now they would not risk one until they are confident it wouldn’t be hit,” Mohammed told Fox News Digital.

“But it is the staging of this funeral that is the message, and the message is aimed at America as much as at Iranians.”

The announcement also coincided with a major diplomatic breakthrough, coming as President Donald Trump announced that a peace deal with Tehran is expected to be signed Sunday.

“The regime could sign a deal that lets it keep its leverage, then bury its leader as the victor who won it,” Mohammed said.

“Announcing the funeral Saturday as Pakistan said the final text of a deal was reached and signing is close, is their bet that the ceasefire holds into July.”

Khamenei was killed on Feb. 28 during the opening salvo of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against Iran, ending a 36-year tenure leading the Islamic Republic. He was 86.

Experts say the regime is using the four-month delay since the February strikes to completely reframe the narrative of the conflict.

“Khamenei goes into the ground as a man America murdered, so the deal becomes a tactical pause — revenge deferred, not abandoned,” Mohammed observed. “The deeper logic is that you bury the leader as a victor, not a victim.”

“They can now stage the funeral as the war’s victory monument: the martyred Imam laid to rest as the man whose resistance forced America to terms,” Mohammed added.

“The four-month delay was not only security. It was waiting for a win to bury him.”

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AYATOLLAH ALI KHAMENEI, SUPREME LEADER OF IRAN

Following three days of public ceremonies in Tehran, the procession will move to the clerical heartland of Qom on July 7 before concluding in Mashhad on July 9.

Analysts note the dates heavily leverage deep Shia religious iconography, falling directly within the holy mourning month of Muharram.

“This is also a staged passion play, not a schedule because the dates fall within Muharram, the Shia mourning month centered on Imam Hussein’s martyrdom at Karbala, and the burial on July 9 is timed to the eve of another Imam’s martyrdom,” Mohammed said.

“The body goes into the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad — the only one of the 12 Imams buried in Iran, and the holiest site in Iranian Shiism — giving the regime a permanent martyr’s shrine and mobilization site for years.”

Mohammed noted that scheduling the opening ceremonies on the 250th anniversary of America’s Independence Day carries deliberate geopolitical signaling.

“The regime had room to choose which Muharram days and, at a minimum, it’s a message they are happy to broadcast; very possibly it’s the point — while America marks 250 years, Iran opens the funeral of the leader America killed and calls it the beginning of its victory.”

LETHAL ELITE ‘BLACK-CLAD’ KILL SQUAD GUARDS IRAN’S NEW SUPREME LEADER MOJTABA KHAMENEI

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is shown in a portrait image.(Fox News)

The highly public, multi-city route presents a massive security vulnerability for Iran’s new leadership.

Khamenei’s son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has remained entirely in hiding due to targeted security threats and reported injury since the war began.

“By every tradition, the son leads the prayers and stands at the grave; it is the act that consecrates the succession,” Mohammed noted.

“But Mojtaba has not appeared in public since the war began, runs the country by courier, and is a designated target — and a funeral is a pre-announced time and place. For a man whose every confirmed sighting is a coordinate, July 9 in Mashhad is the most dangerous appointment of his rule.”

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP

“The regime is boxed: It needs the son at the father’s grave to crown the dynasty, but putting him there exposes him as never before,” Mohammed concluded.

“If he appears, it’s his first sighting and a gamble; if he doesn’t, the dynasty is consecrated by an absence.”

Singer Oliver Tree among 6 killed in helicopter collision over Rio de Janeiro, officials say

    June 14, 2026 / 5:13 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Two helicopters collided over Rio de Janeiro on Sunday morning and crashed in the city’s western zone, killing all six people aboard, including American singer and comedian Oliver Tree, firefighters said.

Rio de Janeiro’s Military Fire Department said one of the helicopters crashed in the parking lot of a car dealership, where several electric vehicles were parked, igniting a fire that was quickly extinguished.

Officials said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision.

Police said that Tree was on the list of passengers handed to aviation authorities, but have not been able to identify the bodies of those killed in the crash. There were three other passengers in Tree’s helicopter and the pilot. The other helicopter carried only the pilot, according to the manifest provided by Brazilian authorities.

Fernandes de Freitas, a tire repair worker, said he saw one of the helicopters in flames following the midair collision, and noticed that one of the passengers jumped out of the other aircraft before it hit the ground. “It was terrifying, absolutely horrifying,” De Freitas said.

Tree performed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on June 4, and published a video on his Instagram Saturday in which he is playing soccer in a Brazilian neighborhood. Tree was on a world tour to promote his 2026 album “Love You Madly Hate You Badly.” His next scheduled performance was on July 1 in Lisbon, Portugal, according to his official website.

According to Variety, Tree had a large following on TikTok and his songs were often used in videos on the platform. “Life Goes On” has been featured in more than 3.7 million videos since its 2021 release, while his 2022 song “Miss You” is featured in about 1.5 million videos, the Outlet reported.

Large tarps still cover the Kennedy Center’s exterior after President Donald Trump’s name was removed following a federal court order.

Visitors expressed confusion and frustration at being unable to view what remains after workers took down the metal letters early Saturday morning.

The removal followed an appeals court decision upholding a judge’s ruling that adding Trump’s name to the building was unlawful.

Large striped tarps remained on the Kennedy Center’s exterior Sunday, prompting confusion and frustration from some visitors who arrived to the renowned arts venue to see President Donald Trump’s name removed.

Stephen Caken, a New York resident visiting Washington, DC for an internship, told CNN he was puzzled why the tarp was still up after the president’s name had been removed on Saturday in compliance with a federal judge’s order. “It seems like they’re trying to just kind of take away attention from this whole charade,” Caken said.

Much of the exterior portion of the building where the metal letters marking Trump’s name were installed in December was covered Sunday afternoon, preventing many from viewing what remains. John Mathew Smith, a Maryland resident who made the trip to the Kennedy Center, argued that Trump was “trying to weaken America’s symbols.”

“To me, he’s trying to deface America’s symbols before he starts finishing defacing the country itself,” Smith said.

Tim Terpstra, a Washington resident who lives nearby, arrived at the center for the second time this weekend, hoping that the tarps had been removed. “It would be nice to be able to see to make sure that it is down, and no vestiges of what was up there still remain,” he said.

CNN has reached out to the Kennedy Center for comment about why the tarp is still up.

The removal occurred after an appeals court declined to pause a ruling from US District Judge Christopher Cooper that found the venue acted unlawfully when it added Trump’s name to the building, part of the president’s effort to remake the nation’s capital. The installation of Trump’s name to the building, which was named for assassinated President John F. Kennedy, struck a deep symbolic chord among residents who’ve cherished the center, which has long served as a cultural hub in the deep-blue city.

The center took steps last week to reverse the change in some places but kept the president’s name on the building as it sought to stave off compliance with Cooper’s ruling.

On Friday, crowds had gathered to stake out the removal as crews began to erect scaffolding in front of the venue’s facade. Some protestors shouted chants of “Take it down,” and at one point, called the workers “heroes.” A little after 3 a.m. Saturday, workers appeared to be removing letters, according to video shot through a small opening in the scaffolding.

While the Kennedy Center’s appeal is expected to play out in coming weeks, the legal fight dates back to December, when Trump’s handpicked board of trustees added his name, leading to a wave of artists pulling out of performances.

Rep. Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat and an ex-officio trustee of the board, quickly launched a legal challenge against the name change. On Saturday, Beatty posted a celebratory video on social media of herself doing a dance popularized by Trump to “YMCA” by The Village People.

In Trump’s second term, the venue has continue to served as a vehicle for him to elevate work that aligns with his cultural preferences. He hosted the Kennedy Center Honors in December and the center hosted the premiere of first lady Melania Trump’s documentary. And last week, the center hosted the final round of Trump’s national civics contest for high school students.

In his effort to reshape Washington, DC, Trump has also paved over the White House Rose Garden to create a Mar-a-Lago-esque patio, demolished the East Wing to make room for a massive ballroom, and changed the color of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He’s also launched efforts to build a golf course, construct the tallest arch in the world on a traffic circle across from Arlington National Cemetery and put a sculpture garden along the Potomac River.

Meanwhile, some efforts have focused more on ideology than aesthetics: White House officials have mounted an ongoing review of the Smithsonian Institution in an effort to align the organization with the president’s views on American history and culture. In Washington, his administration has also reinstalled a controversial Confederate monument and at the memorial of George Mason, a founding father, the administration has removed references to the fact that he “paradoxically” owned slaves despite being a champion of “individual rights.”

The two sides are expected to meet for a signing ceremony on Friday, June 19, in Switzerland, Sharif said.

In a statement posted to social media, President Trump declared that the deal with Iran “is now complete.”

“Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” Mr. Trump wrote. “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

Details of the agreement have not been released but the deal includes the end of military operations in Lebanon, according to Sharif. It was unclear if Israel had agreed to cease its military operations in Lebanon.

“With the agreement now in place, mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week,” the prime minister said. “These pre-implementation discussions will lay the foundation for the technical talks and the official signing ceremony.”

Transcript: Sen. Mark Kelly on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” June 14, 2026

    2026-06-14T12:08:00-0400 / CBS News

The following is the transcript of the interview with Sen. Mark Kelly, Democrat of Arizona, that aired on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on June 14, 2026.

MARGARET BRENNAN: We turn now to Arizona Democratic Senator Mark Kelly, who joins us from Phoenix. Welcome back to Face the Nation. Senator, I just want to read something that the president posted on his social media account moments ago in regard to the events today in Beirut. He said the attack, the Israeli attack on Beirut, should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a peace deal with Iran. Israel has a right to defend itself, but the attack it was responding to was very small and meaningless, and all sides should stand down. That’s a different response than what the Secretary of Defense shared with us. It seems like the president is worried this could disrupt the negotiation and the possibility of a deal being signed. Do you support the memorandum of understanding?

SENATOR MARK KELLY: Well, I haven’t seen the details yet, Margaret, and you know, I don’t know if this is a special day, and if we’re very close to a deal. I do agree with what the president said about standing down. It’s obvious that we’re negotiating with the Iranians at this point. I think it’s always important for folks to remember, how did- how did we get here? We’re here because in 2018, Donald Trump tore up the JCPOA and got us into an unauthorized war with the Iranians, and all this has done for the American people is driven up costs, the costs of energy, so, specifically gasoline, the cost of food. And this is at a time when the American people are having a historic time just affording their lives.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, you questioned Secretary Hegseth last month about what this war did to American military preparedness, specifically restocking munitions that are depleted by the Iran war. As I questioned him about that, he said it was a media narrative, that I was making it up, but also said his testimony before your committee was speculation. What’s the reality check there? Do we have a munitions problem?

SEN. KELLY: Well, as Secretary Hegseth said in front of the Armed Services Committee, of which I’m a member, this will take years to rebuild the stockpiles of munitions, so of course we have a munitions issue. I mean, it just came from him, and I think it’s widely understood that when you attack over 10,000 targets from the air with cruise missiles and ballistic missiles and bombs from airplanes, you are using a lot of munitions, and we do not have an endless supply of these things. So, now we’re in a posture where we’ve got to be incredibly careful, and this is also at a time when Ukraine continues to need some help. President now sells munitions to the Europeans, because I think, as everybody understands, this is always about the bottom line for him. But Ukraine is an ally, they’ve been illegally- illegally attacked by the Russians, and they still need our assistance.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, President Zelenskyy was on this program and told us he’s waiting on President Trump to say yes to a US-Ukraine drone deal. Do you know what the holdup is?

SEN. KELLY: I do not at this point, and I don’t think there should be a holdup. I also agree that we should consider some co-manufacturing. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, you know, clearly indicated that he didn’t- he didn’t seem very interested in this, but if Ukraine is going to win, and I got to say, right now it seems like the momentum is on their side, they need additional help from us. So co-production of some interceptors could be a possibility, but also help with their drone manufacturing, and this could also help us in the future. Ukrainians are really good at this, and we have a lot we could learn from them.

MARGARET BRENNAN: I want to come back to something we were discussing with Senator Warner, and that is the security risk that is resulting from having this warrantless surveillance program, Section 702, suspended right now. You, earlier this month, voted against a bipartisan bill extending surveillance authority. You said any short or long-term extension you would not be in favor of until you solve the Bill Pulte problem. Hasn’t that problem been solved now that Jay Clayton is the nominee?

SEN. KELLY: Not completely, because when Tulsi Gabbard leaves, we’re not so sure if the president is going to put Bill Pulte in as the acting DNI, but this is very easy to solve. The president could today make it very clear to the American people that Bill Pulte is going to have no role in the office of the Director of National Intelligence. When I hear that, then we have a very straightforward path to getting FISA renewed.

MARGARET BRENNAN: That’s the price of your vote, is that statement from the president himself?

SEN. KELLY: I mean, you know, I’m constantly reevaluating the situation. I value FISA, especially 702B, that allows surveillance of foreign nationals in other countries. It is incredibly important to our national security, and when it lapses, there is some risk. But I also think there is as much, if not more risk of putting somebody, Bill Pulte specifically, who is- who is unqualified for this job, Margaret. If you made a list of the one million most qualified Americans for this position, I am very confident that Bill Pulte would not be on that list. There’s risk in putting him in this position, and it’s pretty straightforward right now how we solve this.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, the hearing for Jay Clayton, who would be the Senate-confirmed head of National Intelligence, if he gets all these votes, is this Wednesday. Are you pretty much a definite yes? I mean, given your opposition to Pulte, you need a solution. It sounds like this is not a question.

SEN. KELLY: Hey, I don’t know Clayton. I mean, I’m reviewing his background. He’s got a process to go through. We need to vet him. The statute for this job says somebody will have extensive national security or intelligence experience. Does he have that? I think it’s pretty clear he does not. Is he better than Bill Pulte? Yes, I think a lot better. Does he meet some kind of, maybe a minimum, barely minimum standard? Perhaps. So, I’m looking forward to Wednesday. He’s got to answer some tough, tough questions from the committee, and I’ll evaluate his background and whether or not I think he’s prepared to do this job.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Wow. Meanwhile, there are so many issues of- of serious concern on the national security front. One of them, artificial intelligence. The White House on Friday came out and seemed to really ramp up the dispute with Anthropic. The White House told them to suspend access to any foreign nationals, which led the company to suspend all customers from accessing its most advanced AI systems. Do you know if there is an emergency, and is it, as reported by Semafor, because there was suspicion that a China link group had accessed it?

SEN. KELLY: Well, I haven’t officially heard that, but Mythos and some of their other models from AI companies are incredibly capable, and some of the capabilities that these models have to access systems, not only federal government systems, but financial systems, is very concerning to us. So we’ve got to take some time with these tools and do extensive evaluations as to what is the risk to the American people when we release these. So I agree with the administration on this. We’ve got to be incredibly careful, and the AI companies, and you know, I think Anthropic is a good example, seems to be willing to work with the federal government on this to make sure that we do not make a mistake and release something that we will later regret.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Senator Mark Kelly, thank you for your time today. We’ll be back in a moment.
