中央纪委国家监委星期一（3月2日）连续通报两名中管干部被处分，贵州省政协原副主席唐德智被开除党籍和公职，河北省政协原副主席姜德果被开除党籍。

通报称，经查，唐德智丧失理想信念，背弃初心使命，贯彻落实党中央重大决策部署消极应付、弄虚作假，不履行全面从严治党主体责任；违反中央八项规定精神，接受可能影响公正执行公务的宴请；在干部选拔任用工作中为他人谋取利益，在组织谈话时不如实说明问题；廉洁底线失守，违规收受礼品、礼金；干预和插手执纪执法活动；贪欲膨胀，公权私用，伙同亲属大搞权钱交易，利用职务便利为他人在项目承揽、公司经营等方面谋利，并非法收受巨额财物。

依据《中国共产党纪律处分条例》等有关规定，经中央纪委常委会会议研究并报中共中央批准，决定给予唐德智开除党籍处分；由国家监委给予其开除公职处分；终止其党的二十大代表、贵州省第十三次党代会代表资格；收缴其违纪违法所得；将其涉嫌犯罪问题移送检察机关依法审查起诉，所涉财物一并移送。

March 2 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court blocked on Monday a series of California laws that can limit the sharing of information with parents about the gender identity of transgender public ​school students without the child’s permission, handing a victory to Christian parents who challenged these protections.

The justices granted an emergency request ‌by the challengers to reinstate a judge’s ruling that the privacy and anti-discrimination measures at issue undermined their religious and parental rights under the U.S. Constitution’s First and 14th Amendments, while litigation continues. A federal appeals court had put that ruling on hold.

The Supreme Court’s three liberal justices dissented from Monday’s decision.

The California lawsuit is one of many disputes ​concerning efforts to protect the privacy of transgender and gender-nonconforming students playing out across the United States.

The Supreme Court is also considering ​whether to take up a lawsuit against a Massachusetts public school district over actions by teachers and officials to ⁠support the gender identity of students. The court in 2024 turned away similar challenges in Wisconsin and Maryland.

The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, has ​been asked repeatedly to rule on efforts by President Donald Trump’s administration and Republican-led states to restrict the rights of transgender people.

The Supreme Court last year upheld Tennessee’s ​ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors and also let Trump ban transgender people from the military. It heard arguments on January 13 concerning state laws in Idaho and West Virginia banning transgender athletes from female sports teams, with the conservative justices appearing ready to uphold those restrictions.

California law contains several provisions, including the right to privacy under ​the state constitution, that the state has said could apply when transgender students object to having their gender identities disclosed to their parents or ​guardians, sometimes out of fear of hostility, rejection or even violence.

No warning, no siren: Six US service members killed in Iranian strike that hit makeshift operations center in Kuwait

The first US service members to die in the conflict between the US and Iran were killed by a direct Iranian strike on a makeshift operations center at a civilian port in Kuwait on Sunday morning local time, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.

The death toll from that event at the Shuaiba port has since risen to six, US Central Command announced on Monday afternoon, after the remains of two additional service members were recovered.

Earlier Monday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the strike that killed the service members hit a “tactical operation center that was fortified,” but there was “one” projectile that made it through air defenses.CNN previously reported the event was a suspected drone strike.

The source familiar said it was a direct hit just after 9 a.m. local time, on the center of the building they described as a triple-wide trailer with office space inside. The attack came quickly and with no warning or sirens to alert troops to evacuate or get into a bunker, the source said. Hours after the strike, fire was still smoldering in some parts of the building, the source described – the inside of the makeshift operations center blackened and the walls blown outwards from the blast, some parts peeling away from the building.

US Central Command initially said that three service members were killed but didn’t specify the location of the strike. There were dozens of people at the site, the source said, but the final service members who were declared killed in action were unaccounted for when the dust settled. With the building still burning in some places, it took time to recover the remaining service members, the source said.

The CENTCOM release on Monday also said a facility was struck “during Iran’s initial attacks.” The military has not identified the troops killed on Sunday, as families are still being notified.

CENTCOM’s statement said US forces “recently recovered the remains of two previously unaccounted for service members” from the facility that was struck.

The six casualties are the first killed in action in the military operation against Iran that began early Saturday Eastern standard time, dubbed Operation Epic Fury. Hegseth and President Donald Trump have both said that more casualties are likely. A CENTCOM spokesperson said Monday that 18 troops have been seriously wounded throughout the US military’s operation.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine called the service members killed in action “the best that our nation has to offer” and “true examples of what selfless service means.”

“Our deepest and heartfelt condolences are with their families, their friends, and their units,” he said. “We grieve with you and we will never forget you.”

The Democratic National Committee is focusing on five cities to potentially host the party’s next presidential nominating convention in 2028, while officials have also decided against holding a similarly styled event ahead of this fall’s midterm elections.

The decision comes as Republicans have moved towards holding a midterm convention later this year in a twist from tradition that has been championed by the leader of the right, President Trump.

CBS News has learned the DNC will announce Monday afternoon that its next convention will be held from Aug. 7 to Aug. 10 in 2028, with Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver and Philadelphia in the running for the coveted role of host city.

Even as Democrats look ahead to the next presidential election where they are aiming to retake the White House from Republicans, the party’s decision to avoid dedicating attention and resources to a potentially costly midterm convention is being viewed internally as one that could give candidates on the left an advantage over the GOP this fall. The DNC had initially signaled last year that it would consider holding a midterm convention in 2026.

“Republicans were baited into wasting time and money on a midterm convention that will sink their swing-seat candidates by tying them directly to Trump’s wildly unpopular policies,” DNC executive director Roger Lau said in a statement about the decision. “Meanwhile the DNC has put resources where they’re needed most and doubled down on the playbook that helped our candidates flip seats up and down the ballot in 2025.”

In recent months, Mr. Trump has publicly embraced holding a midterm-focused event that could bring the GOP national attention as it tries to hold on to a narrow majority in the House and faces the long-shot risk of losing the Senate this fall.

Last September, Mr. Trump wrote in a social media post, “The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024”

“It will be quite the Event, and very exciting!” Mr. Trump added.

Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kiersten Pels also countered in a text message Monday that “the DNC can’t afford to hold a midterm convention, financially or politically.”

“They don’t have the money, and they certainly don’t have the courage to put their radical, failing agenda on full display for voters to reject,” Pels said.

Party conventions in presidential years are a major fixture of focusing national attention on leading party candidates as they try to win over voters. For both major parties, the widely broadcast conventions are enormous undertakings that highlight not only their current standard bearers, but also provide a stage for up-and-coming or little-known leaders to introduce themselves to a large audience.

The impact of a midterm convention in this day and age of politics is an open question.

The stakes for the two major parties in the midterms are high. If Democrats retake control of the House, they could curtail or block much of Mr. Trump’s agenda during the final two years of his presidency.

Republicans came away from the 2024 presidential election with unified control of Washington and a lengthy window to lean in on their power to enact change that could impact voters’ decisions at the ballot box.

The party of the incumbent president often suffers losses in a midterm cycle, but there are already clear variables this year that differ from the dynamics the GOP faced in 2018, when the party lost control of the House during Mr. Trump’s first midterm election in his first administration.

Democrats took back control of the House in the 2018 midterms by netting around 40 seats, compared to their performance two years before. Since then, margins between Republicans and Democrats have narrowed in the House, and the map of competitive House seats in 2026 could be thin, depending on the political environment this fall.

Republican candidates also appear more willing to align themselves to Mr. Trump than in 2018, when some GOP incumbents tried to distance themselves from the man in the White House.

Federal campaign finance records also show that the Republican National Committee has a significant financial advantage over the DNC. Party finances through the end of January show that the RNC had close to $102 million in the bank while the DNC carried around $15 million in cash on hand and over $17 million in debt.

Yet Democrats’ election performance in 2025, where they easily won races for governor in New Jersey and Virginia, has helped give the left energy and some hope that they may be on track for wide-ranging wins in November.

The party’s choices between now and 2028 are being closely watched as they look to overcome the setbacks that troubled the party during the Biden era and led to election losses in 2024.

Democrats’ potential 2028 convention cities also provide an interesting signal of the argument it may be trying to make with voters in a few years. Chicago hosted the DNC’s 2024 convention, while Boston, Denver and Philadelphia — in the coveted battleground of Pennsylvania — have held the same role for the party during recent presidential cycles over the last 22 years.

Atlanta would send a different message, given Georgia’s rising prominence as a closely contested state between Republicans and Democrats. It’s also become an even more notable flashpoint in American politics after the FBI executed a search warrant in late January at an elections office in Georgia’s Fulton County.

The search stemmed from alleged “deficiencies or defects” involving the 2020 presidential election, despite the state’s chief GOP election official long defending the integrity of his state’s vote and the fairness of the outcome and there being no evidence of decisive voter fraud.

It is unclear when the DNC will decide which city will get to hold the 2028 convention.

“The DNC is proud to be moving forward with our 2028 Democratic National Convention plans, another critical step toward retaking the White House and finally putting an end to Republicans’ betrayal of working families,” party chairman Ken Martin said in a statement.

The Supreme Court on Monday blocked a California education policy that restricts teachers from informing parents about a student’s gender expression, pausing an approach the state says is intended to protect trans minors from rejection and abuse at home.

The emergency case raised fundamental questions about whether parents have a right to know their child is going through a gender transition at school, and whether districts have an obligation to respect a student’s privacy wishes – particularly if disclosure could lead to abuse at home. The Supreme Court has repeatedly been asked to resolve that tension on its merits docket and, so far, has declined to do so.

“We conclude that the parents who seek religious exemptions are likely to succeed on the merits of their Free Exercise Clause claim,” the court said in an unsigned order.

The emergency appeal from a group of teachers and parents in California followed a decision from the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals that let the state’s policies stand. The appeals court paused an order from US District Judge Roger Benitez – who was nominated by President George W. Bush – that had sided with the parents and teachers, putting those policies on hold.

The Supreme Court granted the stay with respect to the parents, but declined to do so when it came to the teachers.

CBS News poll on what partisans want from their parties ahead of 2026 primary season

The primary season begins in earnest this week, as partisans help set the parties’ directions and message ahead of the November midterm elections. So what do those partisans want?

Much of that revolves around their parties’ approach to someone not actually on the ballot: President Trump.

Rank-and-file Democrats are roughly split between wanting their party to talk about its own policy ideas – and, even more, talking mainly about how to stop Donald Trump.

Republicans, for their part, largely say it’s important to have GOP candidates who are supportive of Mr. Trump — at least somewhat, if not very supportive. This is especially important to MAGA Republicans.

Those Democrats who call themselves liberal are even more likely to want the party to talk about stopping Mr. Trump.

The Republicans, for their part, are not nearly as concerned about stopping Democrats, perhaps because their party is already in power.

Primaries can sometimes be a collective balancing act for voters, between what partisans want in a candidate and the strategic approach of anticipating what the wider electorate might want in a candidate.

Across all voters, it’s a fairly even split in appeal between voters who’d want a Democrat who’s thought of as liberal or progressive and one thought of as moderate. Within the Democrats’ own rank and file, there’s a slight tilt toward a progressive candidate over a moderate. All that illustrates a dynamic that’s sure to be a point of discussion within the party.

Among those voters considering Republicans for Congress in 2026, the break is more heavily tilted toward a candidate considered in line with Mr. Trump than for a Republican considered more independent from him.

In all, asked which party they’d prefer to see control Congress next year, more voters right now say they’d prefer to see the Democrats do so than the Republicans.

On immigration

Republicans and Mr. Trump still do slightly better than Democrats on perceptions of who has the right approach to immigration policy, but Democrats have narrowed the gap since January. This comes as, in separate polling, Americans have expressed views that ICE is being too tough, and support for the deportation program has dropped since earlier in 2025.

But there are differences in who Americans think the parties are for.

There’s a third of the country who think the Democratic Party puts the interests of recent immigrants ahead of those of U.S. citizens. Relatively few think it prioritizes the interests of citizens over recent immigrants, though a third think it prioritizes both.

This view is not brand new toward the Democratic Party. Ahead of the 2022 midterms, voters also voiced similar sentiments.

Meanwhile, most Americans think the GOP puts the interests of U.S. citizens ahead of those of recent immigrants.

On economics

On perceptions of economic policy, Democrats have drawn closer to Republicans, compared to January. That comes along with Americans’ continued negativity about the economy.

In terms of priorities and what they’re seen talking about: while most Americans over the course of recent years have called the economy a priority, today some think the Democrats are prioritizing cultural and social issues more than economic ones. That said, that view often comes from the opposing party. It’s mostly Republicans who think the Democrats focus on cultural issues. Democrats themselves feel they cover both.

Even so, neither party is seen by most as putting the interests of the middle class ahead of the wealthy, and on this matter specifically, far more think the GOP favors the wealthy.

GOP Rep. Nancy Mace is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for allegedly attempting to profit off of a congressional program intended to defray housing costs for lawmakers’ Washington, DC, residences — a claim she has denied.

According to a newly published report from the Office of Congressional Conduct, the South Carolina Republican sought and was paid roughly $9,500 beyond the actual costs of her residence in DC.

“There is substantial reason to believe that Rep. Mace engaged in improper reimbursement practices,” the nonpartisan watchdog group said in its official referral to the House Ethics Committee. The ethics committee announced Monday it is investigating the matter.

Mace was participating in a housing reimbursement program for members of Congress, which is intended to help subsidize lodging, food and travel expenses for lawmakers who must maintain households both in Washington and in their districts. The program has drawn intense scrutiny, since it does not require detailed expenses and has effectively given lawmakers who take part a major pay bump.

Mace did not respond to inquiries from the Office of Congressional Conduct, according to the report.

But a lawyer for Mace, William Sullivan, fiercely disputed the claims in a letter to the House ethics panel, calling the report “fundamentally flawed.”

The report’s narrative, Sullivan suggested, appeared to be “influenced by Rep. Mace’s former fiancé,” who co-owned the home with her.

Mace is not seeking reelection to the House and is running in a competitive GOP primary to become South Carolina’s next governor.

Supreme Court blocks redrawing of Republican-held congressional district in New York

The US Supreme Court on Monday approved an emergency appeal from a Republican congresswoman in New York who asked the justices to block a state court ruling that ordered her Staten Island-based district to be redrawn ahead of the midterm election.

The high court’s three liberal justices dissented from the decision.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis and state GOP election officials had urged the Supreme Court to allow New York’s current map to be used, an outcome that would have benefited Republicans in the midterm amid a flurry of mid-decade redistricting in other parts of the country.

Malliotakis argued that the state court decision requiring her district to be redrawn had “thrown New York’s elections into chaos” and said the new district would amount to a racial gerrymander.

The case deals with a different legal dispute than the one at issue in President Donald Trump’s effort to eke an advantage out of the maps by redrawing the congressional district lines in Texas and other states. However, Democrats would likely benefit from the redrawing of Malliotakis’ district in a midterm in which that party is angling to recapture control of the House.

The Trump administration is planning to abandon its effort to punish several law firms that hired President Donald Trump’s perceived foes or took on cases he disliked, according to two people familiar with the matter.
