A Democratic lawmaker who previously drafted impeachment articles against President Donald Trump disrupted a House Homeland Security subcommittee hearing Wednesday, accusing Republicans of using concerns about illegal immigrants holding commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) to distract from what he called Trump’s broader failures.
“This past weekend a convicted felon with bone spurs illegally attacked Iran, launching a protracted war of regime change,” Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., said during his opening remarks, arguing Republicans were diverting attention from congressional war powers.
The hearing — hosted by the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations and Accountability — focused on whether illegal immigrants are obtaining non-domicile CDLs and whether the Department of Homeland Security has properly coordinated with transportation authorities and ICE to enforce immigration laws tied to commercial trucking.

Officials from Oklahoma and Florida were invited to testify about illegal immigrants holding non-domicile CDL licenses, which they said has caused deadly crashes on the nation’s highways.
St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard del Toro was one of the witnesses, and he investigated a high-profile case in which an illegal immigrant from India with a California CDL allegedly killed a family on Florida’s Turnpike after failing to properly complete an illegal U-turn on the tollway.
As Chairman Josh Brecheen, R-Okla., gaveled the hearing in, Thanedar interrupted with a parliamentary inquiry, questioning why the Homeland Security panel — rather than Transportation — was holding the proceeding.
“Per Rule X, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has jurisdiction over transportation regulatory agencies, and roads and safety thereof,” Thanedar said.
“Any bills to improve highway safety would need to be considered and voted on by that committee.”
NOEM PREPS TO BATTLE HOUSE DEMS AFTER BIPARTISAN BASHING IN SENATE OVER DOGS, ICE
The Detroiter added that he wanted to go on record about his objections to holding the hearing, saying it is really about “scapegoating immigrants” to deflect from issues with Trump’s handling of the economy, “which is running off the road.”
Brecheen appeared nonplussed, and reiterated that the committee remains a proper venue, and whether or not the House Transportation Committee could investigate similarly.
“While DOT is the primary federal regulator of CDLs, DHS plays a critical role in granting work authorizations and immigration benefits through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services,” Brecheen said.
“ICE partnered with state highway patrol agencies in several states to conduct joint enforcement operations targeting illegal aliens operating commercial motor vehicles, resulting in significant arrests and taking unsafe drivers off the road.”
He noted one case in his home state where an illegal immigrant with a New York driver’s license that had a REAL ID endorsement and the name “No Name Given” was discovered and arrested along Interstate 40.
He observed the REAL-ID Act itself was signed by former President George W. Bush after 9/11 and that anyone authorized to haul hazardous materials could effectively be driving an 80,000-pound “chemical bomb” if they so chose.
DEMOCRATS ACCUSE ICE OF TARGETING DREAMERS WHILE DHS HIGHLIGHTS GANG MEMBERS, CHILD RAPISTS ARRESTED THIS WEEK
“This is absolutely under the jurisdiction of this committee,” he said.
After Brecheen’s own opening statement, Thanedar followed.
In 2025, Thanedar first drafted Articles of Impeachment against Trump, saying he is “unfit to serve” and “represents a clear and present danger to our nation’s Constitution.”

Thanedar’s articles include usurpation of appropriations, abuse of trade powers, violation of First Amendment rights, creation of an unlawful office (DOGE), bribery and tyrannical overreach.
Thanedar was also the only Democrat to appear for the subcommittee hearing.

Justice Dept. employee charged in child pornography case
Updated on: March 4, 2026 / 4:11 PM EST / CBS News
A longtime Justice Department employee has been arrested and charged in a child pornography case, according to multiple sources who spoke with CBS News.
Timothy Parsons, a legal staffer at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., is facing federal criminal charges in Maryland, where he lives, three sources said.
According to a court filing reviewed by CBS News, an FBI task force searched Parsons home in Bethesda on Monday, looking for potential criminal material.
An FBI agent alleged Parsons answered questions from investigators and acknowledged receiving a message with child sex abuse material from another person in February 2019.
A Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement, “The employee is on leave and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with standard procedure. While we cannot comment on personnel matters, we hold all of our employees to the highest standards of ethical conduct at all times.”
According to an FBI affidavit, Parsons received multiple videos and two images with child abuse material. The affidavit said Parsons told investigators that he had deleted those messages.
The charging documents also alleged Parsons responded to the images with sexually charged responses, including, “That is so hot.”
According to court filings and a review of court dockets by CBS News, Parsons’ case was uncovered by investigators who handled a 2025 investigation into Victor Blythe, a former child psychotherapist at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington.
The court filings said the images sent to Parsons were sent by a suspected child exploiter whose case matches details of Blythe’s 2025 criminal case.
The affidavit also said on Monday, “The FBI executed the warrants at (Parson’s) Bethesda residence and seized several devices belonging to Parsons, who lives there by himself and was alone in the residence when the FBI arrived. Investigators conducted an onsite preview of Parson’s devices and identified no (child abuse material). A full forensic examination of the devices consistent with the search warrant is pending.”
Parsons has not yet entered a plea in his case. He’s scheduled to appear in court Friday in Greenbelt, Maryland. The court docket said Parsons has been appointed a federal public defender. The public defender’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
CBS News sought comment from Parsons but has not received a response.
Blythe has pleaded not guilty and has a court appearance in his federal criminal case scheduled for March 25.

House Oversight panel votes to subpoena AG Pam Bondi in Epstein probe

The Republican-led House Oversight Committee voted to subpoena US Attorney General Pam Bondi for testimony about her role in the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files as part of the committee’s probe into the late convicted sex offender.
GOP Rep. Nancy Mace moved to subpoena the attorney general and it passed 24-19, with bipartisan support. Mace was joined by Democrats and fellow Republicans Tim Burchett, Michael Cloud, Lauren Boebert and Scott Perry.
CNN has reached out to the Justice Department for comment.
Mace forced the vote during a hearing unrelated to Epstein altogether. It’s the latest move in the panel’s expansive investigation into Epstein and comes after Congress passed a law last year requiring the DOJ to publicly release all of its investigative files related to Epstein.
The Justice Department’s release of the files so far has prompted complaints from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, with critics saying they believe the files were overly redacted and demanding greater transparency.
The House Oversight Committee, meanwhile, has sought testimony from a number of of high-profile figures as part of its ongoing probe.
On Tuesday, the committee announced that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had agreed to appear before the panel at a future date and that it had requested voluntary testimony from seven others.
Ahead of the Wednesday vote, Oversight Chairman James Comer told the committee he had spoke with the attorney general’s chief of staff, and that Bondi had offered to give members a briefing – a few at a time – regarding the Department of Justice’s Epstein files.

Atmus

Judge orders US Customs to process refunds on illegal Trump tariffs

WASHINGTON, March 4 (Reuters) – A U.S. trade court judge on Wednesday ordered the government to begin paying potentially billions of dollars in refunds to importers who paid tariffs that the Supreme Court said last month were collected illegally.
Judge Richard Eaton of the U.S. Court of International Trade in Manhattan ordered the government to finalize the cost of bringing millions of shipments into the U.S. without assessing a tariff, according to a court filing. He ordered the refunds to be made with interest.

When merchandise is brought into the United States, an importer pays an estimated amount at entry which is then finalized around 314 days later, a process known as liquidation. Eaton directed Customs and Border Protection to finalize the entry cost on shipments without the tariff being assessed, resulting in a refund.
“Customs knows how to do this,” he told a court hearing on Wednesday, according to a recording on the court’s website. He said the agency should be able to program its system to issue refunds, which are regularly issued when an importer overpays on an estimated duty.
“They do it every day. They liquidate entries and make refunds,” he said.

Eaton also set a hearing for Friday in which he asked for updates on CBP’s refund plans. He said in his order that the court’s chief judge indicated that Eaton is the only judge who will hear tariff refund cases.
Customs and Border Protection has said in court filings that the task of finalizing entry costs without assessing a tariff was “unprecedented” in scale and could require manual review of more than 70 million entries. The agency had said in other court filings it wanted up to four months to assess its options for paying refunds.
CBP did not respond to a request for comment.
“The language in this order strongly suggests an across-the-board approach that importers are entitled to IEEPA refunds, full stop,” Ryan Majerus, a former senior Commerce official who is now a partner with King & Spalding, said. “The government may challenge the order’s scope or, at minimum, ask for more time to enable U.S. Customs to undertake what will undoubtedly be a monumental task here.”
The U.S. government collected more than $130 billion in illegal tariff payments, which were central to Trump’s trade policy. The Supreme Court did not provide guidance for issuing refunds, creating confusion over how importers would be reimbursed.
The order by Eaton came in a case brought by Atmus Filtration (ATMU.N), which said in court filings it paid about $11 million in the illegal tariffs.
Attorneys for Atmus did not respond to a request for comment.
Atmus’ lawsuit is among the roughly 2,000 that have been filed with the trade court seeking a refund of the tariffs imposed under IEEPA, or the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
Eaton said he did not want to have to hear each case. “We want to work out a method by which those importers can make a claim for duties that were unlawfully applied.”
More than 300,000 importers paid the tariffs. The vast majority of importers are smaller businesses and they are hoping that Customs officials adopt a simple, low-cost system to pay reimbursements. Many told Reuters they might abandon their refund if they had to sue or go through a cumbersome Customs administrative process.
“There should be no impediment to CBP issuing refunds,” said George Tuttle, a trade attorney.

House Oversight Committee votes to subpoena Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify in Epstein probe
Updated on: March 4, 2026 / 4:38 PM EST / CBS News
Washington— The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee voted Wednesday to subpoena Attorney General Pam Bondi for testimony as part of its investigation into the federal government’s handling of the case against convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The panel approved a motion from Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, to issue the subpoena to Bondi, with five Republicans in all joining with Democratic members in support of the bid.
The GOP lawmakers who supported the effort to subpoena Bondi are: Mace, Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert, Tennessee Rep. Tim Burchett, Texas Rep. Michael Cloud and Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Oversight Committee had issued a subpoena to the Justice Department for documents related to Epstein last August. Legislation passed with bipartisan support from Congress last year, which was signed by President Trump in November, also required the Justice Department to disclose all material from its investigation into Epstein. Millions of records were made public as a result of the law, called the Epstein Files Transparency Act, with the last tranche of documents released in late January.
Ahead of the vote, Rep. James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky who chairs the Oversight Committee, said Bondi has offered to provide a briefing to members at the Justice Department on the Epstein-related files and “anything else pertaining to that.”
Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat on the panel, said the public has “significant questions” about the Justice Department’s process for releasing the material from its investigation into Epstein.

“The attorney general has gone to speak, obviously, to other committees,” he said. “I think it’s important that she is in front of our committee. She can directly answer questions about the release of the files, about transparency, about ensuring that victims and survivors are protected.”
Bondi appeared before the House Judiciary Committee last month for a hearing focused on oversight of the Justice Department, during which she faced sharp questions from Democrats about the department’s handling of the Epstein files. Democratic lawmakers accused Bondi of orchestrating a “cover-up” that shielded people whose names appeared in the millions of pages of material, while failing to redact the names of survivors of Epstein’s abuse.
The Justice Department has also been criticized for the pace of the release of the documents. The Epstein Files Transparency Act required all of the material to be released by Dec. 19, 2025, but the Justice Department made the documents public in batches. The department also faced criticism over the first tranche, which contained few mentions of Mr. Trump, though records disclosed in the second wave did mention the president. Mr. Trump has not been accused of wrongdoing.
A CBS News analysis found that the Justice Department took down tens of thousands of files, some of which contained explicit images or survivors’ information. But the reasons for the removal of other files, such as a call log with redacted names, are unclear.
The attorney general is not the only member of Mr. Trump’s Cabinet who could appear before the committee to answer questions about Epstein. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, under scrutiny for his ties to the disgraced financier, agreed to an interview with the panel, Comer announced Tuesday. A date for his testimony has not yet been set.
Lutnick was among the slew of powerful people revealed to have been in communication with Epstein after the Justice Department made public its trove of records stemming from its probe. While Lutnick had said he cut off contact with Epstein in 2005, documents showed they communicated in the years between Epstein’s guilty plea to state prostitution charges in Florida in 2008 and his death by suicide in 2019, after he was indicted on federal sex-trafficking charges.
As part of its investigation into the government’s handling of Epstein’s case, the Oversight Committee has sought testimony from several former officials and others who were close to him, as well as documents from Epstein’s estate.
Investigators held closed-door depositions with former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last month, videos of which were released earlier this week.
The former president said of Epstein, “There’s nothing that I saw when I was around him that made me realize he was trafficking women.” Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, said she knew “nothing about him.”
