Democrats see new openings for House wins in Trump country after first midterm races

Published Mar 6, 2026, 6:00 AM ET / Updated 52 min ago / By Arit John

Jamie Ager acknowledged that his path to flipping his western North Carolina seat involves what he called “difficult math.”

Democrats haven’t represented the state’s 11th District in more than a decade, and President Donald Trump carried the seat by 10 points in 2024 under its current district lines. But Ager, a fourth-generation farmer who won the Democratic primary Tuesday, is hoping his deep ties to the community will help overcome his party’s reputation.

“Because I know so many people in the community, I’ve been a good business partner to a lot of folks, people see me less in the context of political partisanship, and more in the context of a friend, a neighbor, community member,” Ager said.

In their bid to take back the House in November, national Democrats have sought to expand their map deeper into Republican territory, hoping that candidates like Ager can make the races more competitive.

But before Democrats can contest control of the US House, they must first make their way through a monthslong primary season full of competitive primaries in blue, purple and red-leaning districts.

Tuesday’s primaries offered some clues as to how that process could go.

Turnout figures suggest Democrats have high enthusiasm on their side heading into the midterms. Roughly 200,000 more votes were cast in North Carolina’s Democratic contest for US Senate than on the Republican side. And in Texas, Democratic turnout in the Senate primary was the highest for any midterm contest since at least 1970.

National Democrats got their preferred candidates in primaries for North Carolina’s 11th District and Texas’ 15th, where they hope Tejano music star Bobby Pulido can run a competitive race in a seat Trump carried by 18 points in 2024.

Ager and Pulido’s victories were a boon to the moderate wing of the party, which has backed candidates who fit their districts even if they buck some progressive ideas.

“If you give voters a distinct choice, you can escape the gravity of the terrible party brand weighing you down,” said Liam Kerr, the co-founder of Welcome PAC, a centrist group that endorsed the two candidates. “I think the parties, both parties, don’t make enough longshot bets. They don’t stretch the map enough.”

Ager, whose grandfather represented the district as a Democrat, said the version of the party he grew up with represented working people, but his party has failed to communicate a clear message over the last decade. The party needs to “focus on issues that affect working people” and “communicate that message in ways that people are familiar with.”

Pulido, a Latin Grammy winner, was criticized by his opponent for his personal opposition to abortion. National Democrats believe his socially conservative profile could help him in November against two-term GOP Rep. Monica De La Cruz.

“We’ve been getting our butts kicked for a long time. And we have to find out why that is,” Pulido told CNN at his watch party in Pharr, Texas. “And there’s a lot of people that we’ve got to go bring back.”

Democrats are still facing at least half a dozen competitive primaries, including in key swing districts in Colorado, Nebraska, and California.

“The primaries will work themselves out,” said Adam Bozzi, a longtime Democratic strategist. “Regardless of who wins some of these primaries, the energy is on the Democratic side.”

Republicans are also facing challenging House primaries. In two Texas districts drawn to favor the GOP, Trump ally and occasional MAGA antagonist Rep. Dan Crenshaw was defeated by state Rep. Steve Toth. And US Rep. Tony Gonzales, who on Wednesday acknowledged an affair with a staffer who later died by suicide, was also forced into a May 26 runoff against activist Brandon Herrera.

House Republican leaders on Thursday called on Gonzales to withdraw from the race. If he does so by March 18, Herrera would become the party nominee without a runoff.

Democrats see a wide map; Republicans see a fantasy

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, House Democrats’ campaign arm, announced a second expansion of its House map last month, adding seats, including Montana’s 1st Congressional District, where incumbent GOP Rep. Ryan Zinke announced this week he won’t seek reelection, and Colorado’s 5th District, where incumbent GOP Rep. Jeff Crank was outraised by a Democratic challenger last year.

“Going into the midterms, the political environment is breaking our way as the public sours on Republicans’ broken promises,” said DCCC spokesperson Viet Shelton. “We have the better candidates, the better message, and most importantly – we have the American people on our side.”

Republicans have argued that they’re the party on offense.

Mike Marinella, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee, House Republicans’ campaign arm, called the efforts to reach into Trump territory “political hallucinations.”

“They can fantasize about ‘expanding’ the map all they want, but they’re operating on our turf, and they’ll be wasting their money defending their weak incumbents and stitching together their messy primaries,” he said in a statement.

Before Democrats can compete in Republican districts, they have to contend with crowded primaries where moderates are being challenged by more progressive candidates, Republicans say.

“They first need to maybe pump the brakes and take a look at the primary problem they have going on,” said Chris Pack, a Republican strategist who worked for the NRCC in 2020.

    Where redistricting stands

The nationwide mid-cycle redistricting battle is still being waged in courtrooms and state capitals. As of now, Republicans have gained an advantage in nine districts, after redrawing maps in Texas, Missouri, Ohio and North Carolina. Democrats could flip as many as six seats, after California voters passed new Democratic maps and a Utah court decision created a blue district in the state.

But that balance could tilt in the coming months. Democrats in Missouri are hoping to put up a ballot initiative to vote to overturn their new, Republican-drawn maps. In Florida, Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has called for a special session in April to redraw his state’s maps.

In Virginia, Democrats have introduced new maps that would target four Republican-held seats if approved by voters in an April referendum. The Virginia Supreme Court this week lifted a lower court’s stay on the referendum and former President Barack Obama taped an ad supporting the proposal ahead of early voting beginning on Friday.

And both parties are awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court on a Voting Rights Act case that is expected to deal a blow to majority-minority districts.

Israel pounds Hezbollah targets, daring Lebanon to reclaim sovereignty from Iran-backed terror proxy

The IDF attacked Hezbollah targets in Beirut on Friday

    Fox News

    Published March 6, 2026 6:30am EST | Updated March 6, 2026 5:00am EST

Amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, analysts say the Trump administration should pressure Lebanon to fulfill its commitments to disarm the Iran-backed terrorist group as it drags the country into another war with Israel.

David Schenker, a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs who oversaw Lebanon’s policy during the first Trump administration and now directs the Program on Arab Politics at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said: “The U.S. should make clear to Lebanon that it is time for the state to honor its ceasefire commitment to disarm Hezbollah,” he told Fox News Digital. Schenker warned if Beirut “doesn’t pursue disarmament, it will remain a failed state.”

The warning comes as the IDF attacked multiple Hezbollah targets Friday in response to the terror group’s launching of rockets and drones toward Israel on March 2, its first attack since a November 2024 ceasefire ended the previous round of fighting.

Smoke billows following strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, following an escalation between Hezbollah and Israel amid the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, as seen from Baabda, Lebanon, March 5, 2026.(Mohamed Azakir/Reuters)

Since the first day of the renewed fighting, the IDF has carried out over 200 strikes across Lebanon targeting Hezbollah’s military, media and financial infrastructure, as well as operatives from the group and affiliated networks, according to a March 5 analysis by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’Long War Journal. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz also threatened Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem.

The renewed fighting has exposed deep tensions inside Lebanon’s government, which in recent days called on Hezbollah to disarm and ordered security agencies to prevent attacks on Israel from Lebanese territory.

Smoke rises after Israeli strikes in Lebanon, following an escalation between Hezbollah and Israel amid the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, as seen from Marjayoun, Lebanon, March 5, 2026.(Karamallah Daher/Reuters)

Schenker says the move reflects frustration in Beirut rather than a fundamental policy shift. “The Government of Lebanon’s latest cabinet vote on Hezbollah disarmament is nothing new,” Schenker said. “It is a reiteration of the cabinet decision last August mandating the disarmament of Hezbollah. The language is perhaps more strident, but the message is the same.”

“It is a reflection of the Government’s frustration and desperation over Hezbollah dragging Lebanon into yet another war with Israel,” he added. “It also reflects the Lebanese Armed Forces’ failure to date to take its mission of disarmament seriously.”

Hezbollah’s latest attacks appear to have caught Lebanese officials off guard. Reports suggest the group had previously assured officials it would not intervene in a broader regional conflict tied to Iran.

Schenker said the episode underscores a longstanding reality in Lebanon’s political system. “The government of Lebanon has never tried to control Hezbollah,” he said. “The few months that the LAF devoted to disarmament in south Lebanon was performed with Hezbollah’s consent and coordinated with the militia.”

Still, public frustration inside Lebanon may be shifting the political environment. “Given the population’s growing anger toward Hezbollah now, the political environment should be more conducive for the LAF to confront Hezbollah,” Schenker said.

ON MADURO’S ‘TERROR ISLAND,’ HEZBOLLAH OPERATIVES MOVE IN AS TOURISTS DRIFT OUT

“The fear of ‘civil war’—i.e., Hezbollah perpetrating violence against the Government—remains,” he added. “But increasingly, Lebanese prefer taking that risk and possibly gaining sovereignty than being in a state of perpetual war with Israel.”

In a clip posted on X by the Center for Peace Communications, Lebanese people angrily responded to Hezbollah’s actions with one man telling Jusoor News: “If Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem wants to commit suicide, let him go do it in Tehran, not Lebanon.”

According to David Daoud, senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Hezbollah’s decision to attack Israel despite the ceasefire reflects the group’s willingness to escalate the conflict even as Lebanon’s government seeks to avoid another war.

The crisis has also drawn international attention. French President Emmanuel Macron called for urgent steps to prevent Lebanon from sliding deeper into war.

“Everything must be done to prevent this country, so close to France, from once again being drawn into war,” Macron wrote in a statement posted on X on March 5 after speaking with Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese leaders.

Macron said Hezbollah “must immediately cease its fire toward Israel,” while urging Israel to avoid expanding military operations inside Lebanon.

For now, analysts say the outcome may depend on whether Lebanon’s government is willing to confront Hezbollah directly or continue to tolerate Iran’s terror proxy that has long operated outside the control of the government’s control.

Republicans on Capitol Hill are asking the Justice Department to consider bringing criminal charges against Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide in President Donald Trump’s first administration who became a star congressional witness about the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, according to two sources familiar with recent developments.

GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk made a criminal referral of Hutchinson to the Justice Department in recent days, the sources said. He accused Hutchinson of lying to Congress in her summer 2022 testimony when she alleged Trump was aware of the potential for violence on January 6, 2021, and forged ahead with his attempts to rile up his supporters.

Loudermilk has long attempted to reframe the public perception of the events at the Capitol, including by scrutinizing the House committee that investigated the Capitol riot and found Trump was “directly responsible” for the riot. Loudermilk’s referral was co-signed by House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, who chairs the committee under which Loudermilk is running a probe of January 6.

The Justice Department’s press office didn’t respond to inquiries about the referral. Both current and former lawyers for Hutchinson didn’t respond to multiple inquiries this week from CNN. CNN has reached out to Loudermilk for comment.

It’s not uncommon for Congress to make criminal referrals regarding witnesses that have come before it previously, especially in heavily charged political situations, and referrals don’t necessarily lead to charges. A referral at times could add to a criminal investigation or prompt one. They are often treated by the Justice Department as suggestions.

A referral and possible Justice Department action against Hutchinson could refocus attention on a fraught aspect of the work years ago of the House Select Committee and prosecutors. It also comes a time when the Trump administration has pursued politically charged criminal cases against former government figures whom Trump considers opponents.

Hutchinson has drawn scrutiny for years

Hutchinson, 29, was the top aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows at the end of the first Trump administration. The select committee created by then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi considered her a key eyewitness to several episodes leading up to January 6, in addition to witnessing some of Trump’s real-time reactions that day.

Her testimony drew significant blowback from Republicans. Justice Department prosecutors under former President Joe Biden’s administration interviewed her during their inquiry into Trump and other powerful Republican figures — and took some of her accusations seriously, sources familiar with the probe at the time have told CNN.

Hutchinson testified she had heard a secondhand account that Trump was so enraged at his Secret Service detail for blocking him from going to the Capitol on January 6 that he lunged to the front of his presidential limo and tried to turn the wheel.

A Secret Service agent and White House deputy whom Hutchinson said were also aware of the story have said they don’t remember it.

[Related article Former Special Counsel Jack Smith testifies during a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill on January 22 in Washington, DC. Hutchinson had alleged the lawyer she initially worked with, Stefan Passantino, who was the top ethics attorney in the first Trump administration, had made clear to her that the less she recalled to House investigators, the better.

Before her blockbuster testimony in June 2022, Hutchinson dropped Passantino and got a new lawyer. Once she switched attorneys, she shared more information with the former select committee both through closed-door interviews and in a public hearing.

Passantino has repeatedly said he acted ethically in representing Hutchinson, ushered her through cooperative rounds of testimony and believed she had been truthful initially. Legal ethics investigators in Washington, DC, and Georgia both dropped inquiries into Passantino that arose after Hutchinson’s testimony.

The FBI and Biden-era Justice Department prosecutors investigated Hutchinson’s accusations about the Trump-backed lawyer and others who may have been involved in Hutchinson’s account of events, sources have told CNN. No charges were brought.

Passantino and a law firm who represents him didn’t respond to requests for comment for this story.

The federal investigators’ questioning of Hutchinson predated the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith, and her accusations never became part of Smith’s now-public findings in the January 6-related case against Trump.

Yet House Judiciary Committee’s Republicans have continued to raise questions about Hutchinson’s role in the criminal investigation and as a House Select Committee witness.

Smith told the committee in a closed-door interview three months ago that his office evaluated Hutchinson’s claims about Trump on January 6.

[Related video Former Special Counsel Jack Smith testifies during a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill on January 22 in Washington, DC. Al Drago/Getty Images Breaking down Jack Smith’s testimony on Capitol Hill 3:39]

Ultimately, Smith said, she wasn’t a powerful witness in his probe of Trump. Many of Hutchinson’s stories were secondhand, and thus not admissible in court because they were hearsay, Smith noted. Other stories were squishier on the facts of what happened, he said.

Smith said Justice Department investigators had interviewed people she spoke with, including an officer who was in the car with Trump that day.

“The version of events that he (the other witness) explained was not the same as what Cassidy Hutchinson said she heard from somebody secondhand,” Smith said.

On another point, Smith said he had “a conflict” between stories, from her and others, about whether Hutchinson wrote a specific note in the White House.

Smith’s team also found different witnesses “seeing it from a different perspective,” Smith told the committee, when asked about a story Hutchinson told of Trump not wanting his supporters to go through a security check for weapons at his January 6 rally on the Ellipse.

Smith declined to assess how reliable her testimony was.

“I don’t recall reaching any sort of conclusion like that because we were, again, far away from trial,” he told the House Judiciary Committee. “We hadn’t made final determinations.”

Another former Justice Department prosecutor, Thomas Windom, who worked on the January 6 investigation before and during Smith’s special counsel tenure, has already been referred by the House Judiciary Committee to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution. The committee has accused him of obstructing the current Congressional investigation looking back at the January 6 work.

A Trump voter whose son was killed by ICE is calling for an end to “abuse and impunity” at the agency

    2026-03-06T06:00:17-0500 / CBS News

Austin, Texas — Rachel Reyes’ son, 23-year-old American citizen Ruben Ray Martinez, was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent nearly one year ago. But she said she’s still trying to understand why.

Reyes said she has not received any videos, evidence or official reports related to her son’s killing in March 2025. While Martinez’ death was reported at the time, ICE’s involvement was not publicly disclosed until last month, nearly 11 months later.

“I just want to know what happened, why they feel it was justified, and I honestly don’t believe that. I’m not a mother in denial. I’m just a mother in doubt, because I know my son and I know he’s not a threat,” Reyes told CBS News during her first TV interview since her son’s death.

“I think just knowing the truth will give me closure,” she added.

Reyes, an American citizen born and raised in Texas, said her family has deep respect for law enforcement officials and noted she voted for President Trump in 2024. But she said the federal government urgently needs to reform how immigration agents conduct their duties.

“I don’t blame President Trump for the death of my son, ’cause he wasn’t the one who pulled the trigger,” Reyes said. “But I do think that something needs to be changed in that department as far as the pattern of violence or abuse and impunity.”

She took issue with the Department of Homeland Security’s statement saying an ICE agent fired “defensive shots” into Martinez’s vehicle during the March 15, 2025 incident on South Padre Island, Texas. DHS accused Martinez of ignoring directions and “intentionally” running over an ICE agent with his vehicle.

She said DHS’ statement “adds insult to injury, because there was no officer run over and there was no officer injured, and there’s contradicting statements, and that makes me distrustful.”

DHS’ account of the incident was disputed by Joshua Orta, Martinez’s close friend and a passenger of the vehicle during the fatal shooting. Orta said in a draft declaration, shared and prepared by Martinez’s lawyers, that his friend “did not hit anyone.” Orta died in a separate car crash last month, before he could sign the declaration and testify.

Reyes said she does not believe DHS’ version of events, and that she has yet to see any evidence to support it.

“He was not a violent person. He was not aggressive,” she said of her son.

    Dueling accounts of fatal shooting

Reyes said her son had traveled with Orta to South Padre Island that weekend to celebrate his birthday. She said it was his first time leaving the San Antonio area without his family.

An internal ICE report that aligns with the March 2025 incident said the federal agents involved were helping South Padre Island police officers direct traffic in the late-night hours after a car accident. The report, disclosed through a public records request by the non-profit American Oversight, said the driver of a blue Ford “failed to follow instructions” when approaching the area. After commands from the agents, the report said the vehicle “slowed to a stop.” The agents, the report added, surrounded the car and ordered the driver to exit the vehicle.

The report said the driver “accelerated forward” and struck one of the ICE agents. At that point, according to the report, another ICE agent fired “multiple rounds” at the driver through an open side window. The driver was given first aid and then transferred to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In a draft declaration, Orta claimed he and Martinez came across police officers in South Padre Island after having “a few drinks” at a friend’s condo, unsuccessfully trying to enter a club, spending a couple of hours at a pool party and getting food at Whataburger. Orta said one law enforcement officer saw that they had an open container of alcohol in the car Martinez was driving. The officer told them to “turn around and leave,” Orta recounted. Then, Orta alleged, another officer “walked up to our car (and) slapped the hood.”

“I later learned that the trooper’s report said that Ruben had ‘hit’ the officer. That’s not true. I was present, and I state clearly and without hesitation that Ruben did not hit anyone,” his declaration said. “The trooper seemed to be trying to get in front of the car, like he wasn’t moving out of the way when we tried to turn around and leave like the police officer told us to do.”

Orta said he saw two or three officers who yelled at them to “stop.” He said he saw them draw their guns.

“This was crazy to me because we were only crawling, like the car was in gear, but just coasting. Ruben never hit the gas,” Orta said. “The troopers were never in danger from Ruben and could have easily stepped aside while we tried to turn around and leave.”

Orta said an agent, who he later learned worked for ICE, then “approached the driver’s side” of the car as they were attempting to turn around.

“Without giving any warning, commands, or opportunity to comply, the agent fired multiple shots at Ruben from an extremely close distance — no more than two feet,” Orta said. “I heard Ruben say, ‘I’m sorry,’ and then he slumped backward.”

The Texas Department of Public Safety has been the lead agency investigating the fatal shooting of Martinez, but it has yet to release any findings publicly. After CBS News submitted a series of questions, including about Reyes’ comments, a spokesperson for Texas DPS said on Thursday its “investigation is complete” and that it would release records related to the shooting sometime Friday.

Last month, a grand jury rejected criminal charges in the March 15, 2025 shooting.

In a statement to CBS News, DHS said, “This incident was investigated by the state authorities and presented to a grand jury who unanimously found no criminality.” The agency said the ICE agent who shot Martinez discharged his firearm to “protect himself, his fellow agents, and the general public.”

A toxicology screen conducted after the shooting detected alcohol and marijuana in Martinez’s system. Asked about the screen, Charles Stam, an attorney representing Martinez’s family, said Martinez “was never stopped on suspicion of public intoxication or driving under the influence or anything of that nature.”

“It’s important to bear in mind that when Ruben lost his life, his car was in park, and right after those three bullets came through the window and went into his chest from that ICE officer, Mr. Orta’s statement, said that he said, ‘I’m sorry, sir,’ as his last words,” Stam added. “This was not someone who posed a threat.”

    “The light of our house”

Reyes believes there are some similarities between her son’s death and the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. They were all U.S. citizens killed by immigration agents, she noted. In the three cases, she argued, the government used “cold words” to “misrepresent” the actions of federal agents.

But Reyes also highlighted some differences, saying her son was not a protester.

“He was just a young guy looking for a spring break birthday celebration,” she said.

Reyes described him as a “humble” young man who worked at an Amazon warehouse and who enjoyed music, cars, video games and hanging out with friends.

“He was just the light of our house,” she said. “He would always make us laugh.”

Asked what she misses the most about her son, Reyes said, “Just his presence.”

“Just him being there, you know? And I’m sad because I’m never going to see his children or, you know, like the hopes and dreams that he had, (that) he was enthusiastically looking forward to,” she said. “It was just taken from us. And I feel it was preventable.”
