Inflation held steady in February before Iran war drove up gas prices, CPI report shows

    March 11, 2026 / 10:17 AM EDT / CBS News

The Consumer Price Index rose at an annual rate of 2.4% in February, unchanged from the prior month and representing a cooler pace than economists had forecast.

The Labor Department data captures the period before the Iran war broke out in late February. Since then, oil prices have surged, driving inflation concerns among investors.

“Inflation was starting to ease in late 2025 and early 2026, but that will be short-lived as the war in Iran triggers price increases for energy, food and other items,” said Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, in an email.

    By the numbers

Inflation was forecast to rise 2.5% last month, according to economists polled by financial data firm FactSet. The CPI, a basket of goods and services typically bought by consumers, tracks changes in those prices over time.

Inflation has averaged 2.5% over the last three months, compared with about 2.9% in August, September and November. October’s CPI report was canceled because of the government shutdown.

So-called core inflation, a measure of CPI that excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 2.5% on an annual basis. That’s unchanged from January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Food costs rose faster than overall inflation, rising 3.1% on an annual basis, while food away from home — or the cost of eating out — jumped 3.9%.

Consumers got a break at the pump last month, with gasoline tumbling 5.6% on an annual basis. But that progress is all but sure to be erased in March, given that gas prices have surged by almost 60 cents per gallon, or about 20%, since the outbreak of the Iran war.

    Iran-driven inflation fears

The Iran war threatens to stall or even reverse progress in taming inflation, with rising oil prices pushing up gasoline costs and potentially spilling over into other parts of the economy, economists say.

“The path towards disinflation has become murkier,” said Deutsche Bank analysts in a March 10 research note. Higher energy prices could “lead to higher headline inflation” in the coming months, they added.

U.S. consumers are already feeling the effects at the gas pump. On Wednesday, the average cost for gasoline in the U.S. stood at $3.58 per gallon, up from about $3 per gallon before the war, according to data from AAA.

While oil prices have receded in the last two days after reaching above $100 per barrel, experts say gas prices are unlikely to drop to the levels they were at before the war began. That’s partly due to seasonal factors that cause gas prices to rise in warmer months, according to Patrick De Haan, a petroleum expert at GasBuddy.

Gas prices may stall at $3.55 to $3.65 before gradually dipping to around $3.25 over the next month, De Haan said.

The rising cost of oil has broader implications for the U.S. economy and consumers beyond the gas pump.

“It will have knock-on effects on a whole range of goods that Americans will feel in the coming months,” said Ian Bremmer, founder of Eurasia Group, a global political risk research and consulting firm.

The Strait of Hormuz is also a key conduit for fertilizer and other agricultural industry inputs, and depending on how long it remains effectively closed, food prices in the U.S. could start to rise, too, Bremmer added.

    What the experts say

February’s inflation data isn’t likely to draw much investor focus, given the inflation pressures emerging in March with surging oil prices, said Adam Crisafulli, the head of Vital Knowledge.

“People are going to be waiting to see how oil impacts inflation readings over the coming months,” he said, adding that investors will be monitoring how the rise in energy prices potentially bleeds into other categories like plastics, which is a petroleum-derived product.

The inflationary pressures from the Iran war could also change the calculus for the Federal Reserve as it weighs when to next cut interest rates. Markets are now pricing in another rate cut in July or September at the earliest, analysts say.

The Fed will make its next rate cut decision on March 18.

“It is generally assumed — and we agree — that the Fed is going to be on hold for longer now, as they wait to see if inflation expectations rise and become embedded, or if everything will go back to where it was prior to the military operations in the Middle East,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Northlight Asset Management, in an email.

The central bank is tasked with keeping inflation low while fostering full employment. Last month’s employment report showed the economy lost 92,000 jobs, which could bolster the argument for rate cuts.

However, cutting interest rates could fuel more inflationary pressures, on top of rising gas and oil prices.

The risk of higher oil prices “translates into a Fed that will remain cautious about cutting interest rates,” said Ellen Zentner, chief economic strategist for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, in an email.

    National Park Service/Jim Peaco

Scientists spotted the first grizzly bear of 2026 earlier this week at Yellowstone National Park, marking the beginning of the end of hibernation season for the massive creatures, the National Park Service said.

Yellowstone biologists saw the bear on Monday while working in the northern section of the park, which is located in northwestern Wyoming and home to between 150 and 200 grizzlies. There are more than 1,000 grizzlies living across what’s called the “greater Yellowstone ecosystem,” an area covering portions of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming outside of the immediate park boundaries.

The grizzly observed this year was seen in the backcountry, scavenging on the carcass of a bull bison, another species found in the park. An image of the sighting showed the bear standing over the carcass near Yellowstone Lake.

This year’s first grizzly emerged around the same time as previous ones, with the season’s debut grizzly sighting taking place on March 14 in 2025, March 3 in 2024, and March 7 in both 2023 and 2022, according to the park service.

Male grizzlies typically leave hibernation before females, often exiting their dens in early March. Females and bear cubs usually emerge slightly later in the spring, in April and May.

“When bears emerge from hibernation, they look for food and often feed on elk and bison that died over the winter,” the park service said. “Bears may react aggressively to encounters with people when feeding on carcasses.”

Grizzly bears are currently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, after they were brought back from the brink of extinction in the contiguous United States over the last five decades. Yellowstone officials have estimated that the grizzly bear population in the region had dropped to just 136 in 1975. But, thanks to conservation efforts, scientists now consider the population to be doing well, occupying more than 27,000 square miles and expanding their habitats.

  • Cornyn reverses on filibuster stance to push Trump’s SAVE Act in Senate

In a sharp break from his long-standing defense of the Senate filibuster, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, urged Republicans Wednesday to enact “whatever changes” necessary to send a Trump-backed voter ID bill to President Donald Trump’s desk before November’s midterm elections.

Cornyn, who is locked in a fierce runoff against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, is pressing Senate Republicans to pass the SAVE (Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility) America Act — even if it means scrapping the chamber’s 60-vote legislative filibuster.

His appeal marks a significant reversal for the Texas Republican, who long argued the filibuster served as a safeguard against Democrats advancing sweeping left-wing priorities with a simple majority.

“For many years, I believed that if the U.S. Senate scrapped the filibuster, Texas and our nation would stand to lose more than we would gain,” Cornyn wrote in a New York Post op-ed Wednesday morning. “But when the reality on the ground changes, leaders must take stock and adapt.”

TRUMP REVEALS TOP ISSUES GOP SHOULD FOCUS ON TO SECURE MIDTERMS VICTORY: ‘I’VE NEVER BEEN MORE CONFIDENT’

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., is expected to put the SAVE America Act to a vote in the Senate next week, but the measure could fail on the floor given widespread opposition from Democrats. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is also facing a weeks-long shutdown over Democrats’ refusal to fund the agency absent vast reforms to immigration enforcement.

Under Senate rules, both pieces of legislation would have to overcome the 60-vote threshold — meaning buy-in from some Democrats — to survive a key procedural vote before final passage.

“Today, Democrats are weaponizing the Senate’s rules to block the SAVE America Act, defund the Department of Homeland Security and hurt the American people — all to spite President Donald Trump,” Cornyn wrote.

“After careful consideration, I support whatever changes to Senate rules that may prove necessary for us to get the SAVE America Act and Homeland Security funding past the Democrats’ obstruction, through the Senate and on the president’s desk for his signature,” Cornyn added.

Trump has repeatedly called on the Senate to pass the voter ID bill, calling it the “number one priority” during an address to House Republicans on Monday.

    Image 45: placeholder

The House-passed legislation would require proof-of-citizenship to vote in federal elections, impose voter ID requirements and require states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls. Trump has asked Republicans to add provisions that crack down on mail-in ballots, prohibit biological males’ participation in women’s sports and ban child sex-change procedures.

Trump has also threatened not to sign any legislation into law until the SAVE America Act clears the Senate. The White House later clarified that DHS funding was not included in the president’s ultimatum.

TRUMP, THUNE CLASH ON VOTER ID ULTIMATUM AS GOP REMAINS DIVIDED ON PATH FORWARD

“We can either unilaterally disarm, or we can stand and fight,” Cornyn wrote. “The answer is clear: We need to stand, fight and win.

Both Cornyn and Paxton are vying for Trump’s endorsement ahead of the late May runoff election that will decide who will face Democratic candidate James Talarico, a Texas state senator, in the November general election. Trump said last week that he would “soon” back a candidate, but he has yet to issue an endorsement. Cornyn, who has served in the upper chamber since 2002, is seeking his fifth Senate term.

Paxton said last week that he would consider exiting the race if the Senate were to circumvent the filibuster and pass the SAVE America Act.

“The SAVE America Act is the most important bill the U.S. Senate could ever pass, and I’m committed to helping President Trump get it done,” Paxton wrote.

Despite Cornyn’s new openness to filibuster reform, the SAVE America Act still faces an uphill battle in the Senate. The bill passed the House last month in a vote mostly along party lines.

Thune, a supporter of the SAVE America Act, has repeatedly said that the votes do not exist to scrap the 60-vote filibuster and advance the voter ID measure.

The majority leader has also warned against using the talking filibuster — a little-used maneuver preferred by some conservatives — arguing that approach would have unintended consequences and risks jamming the Senate floor for an indefinite period.

“The votes aren’t there for a talking filibuster,” Thune said Tuesday.

“I’m the person who has to deliver sometimes the not-so-good news that the math doesn’t add up, but those are the facts and there’s no getting around it,” he continued.

WASHINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) – The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a March 31 hearing to determine the probable cause of two fatal crashes involving Ford Motor’s hands-free advanced driver assistance system BlueCruise.

Both crashes in 2024 involved 2022 model year Ford Mustang Mach-Es operating in the company’s partial automation mode in 2024 rear-end crashes in which the Ford SUVs struck stationary vehicles at highway speeds in San Antonio and Philadelphia.

The crashes pose serious questions the limitations of the system. The NTSB plans to vote on “safety recommendations designed to prevent ■similar crashes in the future.”

Since 2025, both the NTSB and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have been investigating the use of BlueCruise to address questions about system limitations and to evaluate drivers’ ability to respond. BlueCruise is an advanced hands-free driving system that operates on 97% of U.S. and Canadian highways with no intersections or traffic signals.

NHTSA in January 2025 upgraded its investigation to an engineering analysis.

Ford said BlueCruise is used in 17 countries and in more than 500 million miles of highway travel. The automaker said in 2025 that 2.5 million vehicles ■were equipped with BlueCruise.

“BlueCruise is a convenience feature designed in accordance with industry standards for partial autonomy, and we’ve made thoughtful, deliberate product development and marketing choices to ensure our product is safe and clear to use,” Ford said.

In the San Antonio crash, a Ford on Interstate 10 struck a ■stationary 1999 Honda CR-V, killing the Honda driver; and in the Philadelphia crash, a Ford on Interstate 95 struck two stationary vehicles causing them to collide with a passing Toyota Corolla and the ■drivers of the Prius and Elantra were killed.

The NTSB said in both crashes “no driver-applied or system-initiated braking or steering was recorded in the moments before impact.”

The NTSB has opened several ■investigations in recent years into advanced driver assistance systems including Tesla’s Autopilot. In December 2023, electric car maker Tesla agreed to recall 2 million vehicles to install new safeguards for its Autopilot driver assistance system.
