Most say Trump administration still hasn’t explained Iran goals, CBS News poll finds

    March 3, 2026 / 5:04 PM EST / CBS News

Most Americans feel the Trump administration has not clearly explained the U.S.’ goals in the conflict with Iran.

Explanation — or the perceived lack of one — is linked to whether people support it or not.

The longer Americans believe the conflict will last, the more they disapprove. Half the country believes it’ll be months, or even years before it’s over.

When they don’t think the administration has explained, they think it’ll last longer or aren’t sure.

And perhaps the most immediate view is this: Right now, more Americans feel the military action will make the U.S. less safe than more safe.

Americans do have their own range of ideas about what the administration’s goals might be, and they think there are a lot of them.

The people who say they think the goal is to stop nuclear weapons, stop terrorism or help the Iranian people tend to be supportive.

Some also voice a more cynical view, that they think it’s to gain political advantage back in the U.S.

    Overall, most Americans disapprove.

But the president’s Republican — and especially MAGA — base is solidly behind the action. Most of them think it is making the U.S. more safe.

This survey recontacted Americans first interviewed for our poll last week that was completed prior to the start of airstrikes.

Last week, before the airstrikes began, somewhat more people said they’d approve of military action specifically to prevent nuclear weapons than say they approve of the action generally today.

One reason for the difference: the people who have since moved to disapproval think the administration has not explained its goals. And they don’t think it’ll be a short conflict, and instead believe it will either be long or are uncertain about its duration.

A sizable two-thirds say the administration should get approval from Congress for further military action.

(Republicans don’t think that’s necessary, echoing the views they expressed regarding U.S. military action in Venezuela.)

This CBS News/YouGov survey is based on a nationally representative sample of 1,399 U.S. adults who were recontacted March 2-3, 2026, after the start of U.S. military action against Iran, following aninitial surveyconducted before U.S. military action February 25-27, 2026 using a nationally representative sample of 2,264 U.S. adults. The margin of error for the total sample in the recontact survey is ± 3.2 points.

“By the way, I’m not happy with the U.K. either,” the president said, referring to Starmer blocking the United States’ use of U.K. bases to launch attacks on Iran.

Starmer initially blocked the U.S. from using British military bases, specifically Diego Garcia, for strikes against Iran during Operation Epic Fury. The U.K. later permitted the use of the bases for “defensive strikes” after Trump’s complaints.

The president referenced the Chagos Islands Tuesday, which are British territories in the Indian Ocean, saying it has taken “three, four days for us to work out where we can land there.”

“It would have been much more convenient landing there as opposed to flying many extra hours, so we are very surprised,” he said.

Later, the president said the United Kingdom has been “very, very uncooperative with that stupid island.”

“It’s a shame,” Trump said. “That country, the U.K., and I love that country, I love it.”

“My mother was born there,” he said. “My father was born. Right? He knows all about my father. My father was born there. So, you know, very places that you sort of automatically very, very feel warmly about.”

The president said again, “This is not the age of Churchill.”

Starmer has defended his decision to stay out of the conflict, saying the U.K. was “not involved in the initial strikes against Iran, and we will not join offensive action now.”

“But in the face of Iran’s barrage of missiles and drones, we will protect our people in the region,” Starmer said in an address Monday to Parliament. “President Trump has expressed his disagreement with our decision not to get involved in the initial strikes, but it is my duty to judge what is in Britain’s national interest. That is what I’ve done, and I stand by it.”

Declan Coady)。

This screengrab, taken from a video geolocated by CNN, shows smoke rising from a US facility at the Port of Shuaiba on Sunday, March 1, 2026, following an Iranian strike which left six American service members dead.

    Social Media

The Pentagon has identified four of the six US service members who were killed in an Iranian drone strike on Sunday.

The soldiers are Capt. Cody Khork, 35; Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens, 42; Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor, 39; and Sgt. Declan Coady, 20. All four were assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command, an Army Reserve sustainment unit out of Iowa.

The two other soldiers who were killed in the strike on Sunday have not yet been identified.

    Ad Feedback

CNN first reported that the suspected drone strike hit a temporary tactical operations center at the port of Shuaiba in Kuwait on Sunday. At the time of their deaths the soldiers were serving with 1st Theater Sustainment Command.

A source familiar with the situation described the operation center as a triple wide trailer with office space inside; the building was surrounded by concrete barriers that are typically used to protect military structures overseas from things like car bombs and improvised explosive devices. There was nothing overhead that could shield the building from drones or missiles, however.

There was no siren or warning ahead of the strike to give the troops time to take cover in a bunker, the source familiar said.

1st Theater Sustainment Command is a standalone group based out of Fort Knox, Kentucky, comprised of troops from units from around the country who are assigned to support roles overseas in nine-month rotations.

The command oversees the resupply and support of US forces around the Middle East, bringing in ammunition, water, fuel, food, repair parts, and more. It also manages ports and flights, according to the command’s website, in order to “keep people and equipment moving 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

18 service members have been seriously wounded as a result of the conflict with Iran, according to US Central Command.

President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have indicated that more casualties are likely expected.

“They’re great people,” Trump said about the six troops who were killed [in a phone interview] with the Daily Mail. “And, you know, we expect that to happen, unfortunately. Could happen continuous — it could happen again.”

Pentagon releases names of first U.S. service members killed in Iran war

    March 3, 2026 / 6:04 PM EST / CBS News

The Pentagon has released the names of four American service members killed during the ongoing war with Iran. They were among six who died when an Iranian strike hit a tactical operations center in Kuwait.

The Defense Department identified them as:

    • Capt. Cody A. Khork, 35, of Winter Haven, Florida
    • Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, 42, of Bellevue, Nebraska
    • Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, 39, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota
    • Sgt. Declan J. Coady, 20, of West Des Moines, lowa

They died Sunday in Port Shuaiba during an unmanned aircraft system attack, the Defense Department said Tuesday in a statement.

They were all assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command based in Des Moines. The Pentagon said the incident is under investigation.

The names of the two other U.S. service members who have been killed are being withheld until next of kin are notified.

U.S. Central Command initially announced Sunday that three service members were killed in Kuwait, then said Monday that another had died of their injuries. Later, they said remains of two previously unaccounted-for service members were also recovered from a facility that was hit during Iran’s initial attacks.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had said the deadly incident happened when an incoming munition hit a tactical operations center in Kuwait.

As of Tuesday morning, the number of seriously wounded in the U.S.-Iran conflict, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, was down from 18 to 10 service members as they progressed through medical treatment, a U.S. official said.

In a video message Sunday night, President Trump offered his condolences to the families and warned that there will likely be more American casualties, saying combat operations “will continue until all of our objectives are achieved.”

“We pray for the full recovery of the wounded and send our immense love and eternal gratitude to the families of the fallen,” Mr. Trump said. “And sadly, there will likely be more before it ends. That’s the way it is.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had called the service members who were killed “the absolute best of America.” “May we prosecute the remainder of this operation in a manner that honors them,” he said.

The U.S. and Israel launched a massive military operation early Saturday in Iran, including striking Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s compound in Tehran and killing him. The Israel Defense Forces said other Iranian officials and commanders were also killed, including an adviser to Khamenei.

Iran’s military launched retaliatory strikes on Israel and other U.S.-allied nations in the Middle East.

On Monday, Mr. Trump said the U.S.-Israeli military operation represented the “last best chance” of addressing the threat posed by the Islamic Republic’s ballistic missiles and nuclear program, and that the administration expects the campaign to last four to five weeks.

Tucker Reals, Joe Walsh, Caroline Linton and Jordan Freiman contributed to this report.

Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley slammed Democrats who claim that the Iranian regime was not a threat to the U.S., calling the notion “absurd.”

“It’s absurd for Democrats to say the Iranian regime was no threat to America. For decades, they targeted American troops, made the spread of terrorism a priority, relentlessly pursued nuclear weapons, built missiles aimed at our bases, and plotted assassinations against President Trump and other U.S. leaders — myself included — on American soil,” Haley, now Walter P. Stern Chair at the Hudson Institute, said on X.

“When they chanted ‘Death to America,’ they meant all of us, at any cost,” she added.

Haley told Fox News’ Martha MacCallum that the U.S. and Israel’s joint military offensive, Operation Epic Fury, was a “history-defining moment.” She added that for President Donald Trump, her former boss-turned-political rival, it was a “legacy defining moment.”

“They attempted to do diplomacy, and the Iranian Regime did what they always do. They lie, they cheat, they never tell the truth, and they always want to make sure in the back of their minds they want to harm people,” Haley told MacCallum. “And we saw this when we got out of the Iranian deal, you know, years ago, that they were cheating then. I think that they were trying to get away with cheating now, and I think the Trump administration saw through that.”

The launch of Operation Epic Fury caused a sharp divide within the Democratic Party, with major players praising and criticizing the attacks.

Sens. Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., both of whom called the launch of Operation Epic Fury “illegal,” are among the most vocal critics. Additionally, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., claimed that the operation lacked “strategic clarity” and called for a vote on a war powers resolution.

“Confronting Iran’s malign regional activities, nuclear ambitions, and harsh oppression of the Iranian people demands American strength, resolve, regional coordination, and strategic clarity. Unfortunately, President Trump’s fitful cycles of lashing out and risking wider conflict are not a viable strategy,” Schumer said in a statement.

“The Senate should quickly return to session and reassert its constitutional duty by passing our resolution to enforce the War Powers Act,” Schumer added.

On Feb. 28, when the strikes began, Kaine said that Trump “launched an unnecessary, idiotic, and illegal war against Iran that puts America’s servicemembers and embassy personnel at risk.” Kaine, as well as some other Democrats, called for Congress to return to Washington to vote on his war powers resolution. The resolution, which focused on Iran, was filed in January.

Sanders also issued a statement on Saturday criticizing the operation in which he slammed both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Vermont senator said Trump and Netanyahu had started an “illegal, premeditated and unconstitutional war” against Iran. Sanders, like Kaine, called for a vote on a war powers resolution.

“This attack against Iran is a clear violation of international law and will create increased instability in an already dangerous world. If the United States and Israel can launch an attack against a sovereign nation, so can any other country. Might does not make right. It creates international anarchy, death, destruction and human misery,” Sanders’ statement read.

“We must not allow Trump to force us into another senseless war. No war with Iran,” he added.

There are Democrats who have praised the operation, including Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., who has said that he would be a “hard no” if Democrats forced a war powers resolution vote.

“President Trump has been willing to do what’s right and necessary to produce real peace in the region. God bless the United States, our great military, and Israel,” Fetterman wrote on X as Operation Epic Fury began.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., also praised the operation, saying that “confronting the Iranian threat is essential to national security and to global stability.”

He also called on the president to comply with the War Powers Act and said that he “requested an immediate classified briefing” on the operation.

“Today, the United States, with our key democratic ally Israel, took decisive action to defend our national security, fight terror, protect our allies, and stand with the Iranian people who have been massacred in the streets for demanding freedom from the murderous Iranian regime,” Gottheimer said.

“I applaud the extraordinary bravery and professionalism of our servicemembers and pray for their safety as Iran and its terrorist proxies retaliate against American bases and our partners in the region,” he added.

    作者:Holmes Lybrand、Priscilla Alvarez、Michael Williams
    更新时间:2026年3月3日,美国东部时间下午4:28
    发布时间:2026年3月3日,美国东部时间下午3:09

    国土安全部部长克里斯蒂·诺姆(Kristi Noem)周二在参议院司法委员会听证会上,面临民主党人和部分共和党人的尖锐提问。

    参议员们就以下问题对诺姆进行了质询:

    • 她对两名美国公民在明尼阿波利斯被联邦官员杀害的早期描述;
    • 其机构使用行政令搜查住宅和私人财产的行为;
    • 其使用公务机的情况;
    • 移民官员是否会在11月中期选举前部署到投票站。

    诺姆和几位共和党参议员批评民主党在安全局势紧张之际持续关闭国土安全部(DHS)部分部门。尽管诺姆表示,在周末美国对伊朗发动袭击后,该部门已开始重新审查一些移民,但她未具体说明可能面临的威胁。

    以下是此次数小时听证会的要点:

    诺姆为自己对亚历克斯·普雷蒂(Alex Pretti)和蕾妮·古德(Renee Good)的早期描述辩护

    诺姆在听证会上试图狡辩,声称她从未称今年早些时候在明尼苏达州被国土安全部官员枪杀的亚历克斯·普雷蒂为“国内恐怖分子”,而是称其行为“似乎构成国内恐怖主义”。

    明尼苏达州民主党参议员艾米·克洛布查尔(Amy Klobuchar)问诺姆:“在称他们的儿子为国内恐怖分子后,你对普雷蒂的父母有何回应?”

    “我无法想象他们失去儿子后经历了什么,”诺姆表示,在周二第二次被问及是否向普雷蒂家人道歉时,她再次拒绝。

    诺姆随后为自己的言论辩护:“我没有称他为国内恐怖分子。我只是说这‘似乎是’国内恐怖主义的一个案例。”

    “我认为他的父母清楚发生了什么,”克洛布查尔回应道。

    在普雷蒂被杀害的最初回应中,诺姆在新闻发布会上被问及是否同意白宫官员称普雷蒂为“国内恐怖分子”,以及有何证据支持这一说法时,她表示:“当一个人因意识形态原因实施暴力行为,以抵抗和持续实施暴力,这就是国内恐怖主义的定义。”

    普雷蒂被杀害后不久,诺姆还声称普雷蒂在被枪杀时“挥舞”了他携带的枪支。但随后的枪击视频与此说法矛盾——显示直到官员将手放在他身上时,枪支才可见。普雷蒂在被枪击前几秒钟才被搜出枪支。

    听证会上,诺姆拒绝收回她对普雷蒂和蕾妮·古德的早期描述。古德几周前也在明尼阿波利斯被国土安全部官员杀害。

    民主党参议员迪克·杜宾(Dick Durbin)与诺姆交换意见时,诺姆称两种情况都是“悲剧性的”,并解释她对普雷蒂和古德的描述基于现场报告。

    “你是否收回将这些人描述为国内恐怖分子的说法?”杜宾问道。

    “当这类事件发生时,我们总是向这些家庭表示哀悼。这是悲剧性情况,”诺姆表示,“我们始终努力向美国人民提供尽可能多的信息。我们依赖现场报告和现场特工的反馈。”

    国土安全部因在明尼阿波利斯的行动以及高级官员对普雷蒂和古德死亡事件的相互矛盾的说法而受到严厉批评。

    “承认自己错了就这么难吗?”杜宾质问。

    “我绝对致力于提供事实信息,”诺姆回答。

    共和党人追问广告采购问题

    与诺姆最激烈的交锋来自共和党参议员蒂利斯(Tillis)和路易斯安那州参议员约翰·肯尼迪(John Kennedy)。

    肯尼迪就其机构的广告宣传活动质问诺姆——正如他指出的,该活动中诺姆的形象经常被突出展示。据ProPublica去年报道,该广告项目的主要分包商是Ben Yoho,其妻子是前国土安全部发言人特里西亚·麦克劳克林(Tricia McLaughlin)。

    诺姆辩称广告竞标流程“完全合规”,但肯尼迪表示他的研究“表明你并没有参与竞标”,甚至在一次选择了一家“在你选定它之前11天才成立的公司”。

    “听着,我们都有认识的合格朋友,我并不怀疑这一点,”肯尼迪说。

    肯尼迪补充道,2.2亿美元的广告预算“让我担忧”,尤其是在国会“为每一分钱都在挣扎”的情况下。

    “我只是无法认同这种支出,”肯尼迪表示。

    诺姆称她“与选择这些承包商无关”,并表示总统“指派我向全国传达信息”,重点是该部门的驱逐行动。

    Yoho的公司“策略集团”(Strategy Group)在听证会后的社交媒体上声称,它并未直接与国土安全部签订合同,而是通过“安全美国”(Safe America)获得分包合同。该公司表示,其公司总共为5次电影拍摄、45个制作的视频广告和6个制作的广播广告获得了“226,137.17美元”的收入。

    共和党参议员批评克莉(Cricket)事件并要求诺姆辞职

    蒂利斯在听证会上抨击诺姆和政府的驱逐行动,指责其办公室未提供北卡罗来纳州移民行动的相关信息,并拖延了联邦紧急事务管理局(FEMA)的援助。

    蒂利斯不寻求连任。

    他聚焦于诺姆加入特朗普内阁前的言论,包括她在回忆录中描述的杀害14个月大的狗“克莉”(Cricket)和家里山羊的事件。诺姆在书中写道,这只狗“难以训练”,山羊“脾气恶劣且刻薄”。

    “14个月大的狗在狗的年龄中相当于青少年,”蒂利斯表示。

    “你因为没有投入足够时间和训练就决定杀死那只狗,却还有脸在书中将其称为‘艰难抉择’的领导力课程,”蒂利斯说,“你杀了山羊,只因为你说它行为恶劣。你是个农民,你不该等到山羊行为恶劣才去处理它。你本应该在这之前就采取行动。”

    蒂利斯指责国土安全部逮捕无辜美国公民,并强调了多名在国土安全部特工手下死亡的案例。

    “我们正在让美国人民认为驱逐移民是错误的,”蒂利斯称诺姆的领导“灾难性”,“但事实恰恰相反。你驱逐移民的方式是错误的。”

    蒂利斯还批评诺姆未能“承认在古德和普雷蒂枪击事件中的错误”。

    “执法部门需要明白,”他说,“不尊重事实,就无法真正保护人民。”

    诺姆称“无计划”向投票站派遣移民执法人员,但…

    诺姆表示,她的部门“没有计划”在今年中期选举前向投票站派遣移民执法人员。

    但在特拉华州参议员克里斯·库恩斯(Chris Coons)反复追问下,诺姆仍未完全排除这一可能性。

    库恩斯问诺姆如何看待前特朗普政府顾问史蒂夫·班农(Stephen Bannon)称“移民代理应部署到投票站”的言论。

    “你是否排除11月将移民和海关执法局(ICE)或边境保护局(CBP)部署到投票站?”库恩斯问。

    诺姆回应:“目前没有计划在投票站部署ICE官员。”

    库恩斯要求诺姆明确排除这一可能。

    诺姆反问:“你认为非法移民会在我们的选举中投票吗?”随后她再次强调,11月不会在投票站部署移民官员。

    关于公务机使用的质询

    民主党参议员谢尔登·怀特豪斯(Sheldon Whitehouse)展示了一张NBC新闻报道的照片(首次报道),照片显示公务机内有一间卧室,质问诺姆为何“遣返人员需要乘坐配备卧室和豪华设施的公务机?”

    诺姆回应称,这张照片并不准确,公务机正在翻新以拆除卧室,仅用于驱逐行动和行政旅行。

    她说自己曾乘坐过这架飞机一次。

    “国土安全部发现,通过采购飞机,我们将为纳税人节省数亿美元,”她表示。

    在听证会室外,肯尼迪尖锐批评了诺姆的回应:

    “我希望她能成功,但我不会坐视不管,看着这位内阁秘书花费2.2亿美元的‘广告盛宴’,在电视上吹嘘自己的形象,而不指出问题。这些广告仍在播放。”

Takeaways from Kristi Noem’s combative Senate Judiciary Committee hearing

By Holmes Lybrand, Priscilla Alvarez, Michael Williams
    Updated Mar 3, 2026, 4:28 PM ET
    PUBLISHED Mar 3, 2026, 3:09 PM ET

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem faced tough questions from Democrats and some Republicans during a hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Senators grilled Noem about her early descriptions of two US citizens who were killed by federal officers in Minneapolis, her agency’s use of administrative warrants to search homes and private property, her use of executive jets and whether immigration officers will be deployed to polling places ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Noem and several GOP senators criticized Democrats for the ongoing partial shutdown of DHS in a time of heightened security, but while the secretary said the department has started to re-vet some migrants in the wake of the US attacks on Iran over the weekend, she offered no specifics about possible threats as a result.

Here are the takeaways from the hours-long hearing:

Noem defends her early descriptions of Alex Pretti and Renee Good

Noem tried to split hairs during the hearing by claiming she never called Alex Pretti, the man shot and killed by DHS officers in Minnesota earlier this year, a domestic terrorist, but rather said his actions were an act of domestic terrorism.

Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar asked Noem if she had anything to say to Pretti’s parents after calling their son a domestic terrorist.

“I can’t even imagine what they have gone through in the loss of their son,” Noem said, declining for the second time Tuesday when asked to apologize to Pretti’s family.

Noem then defended her comments, saying, “I did not call him a domestic terrorist. I said it appeared to be an instance of” domestic terrorism.

“I think the parents saw what it was,” Klobuchar responded.

In the initial aftermath of the killing of Pretti, Noem was asked at a press conference whether she agreed with White House officials calling Pretti a domestic terrorist and, if so, what evidence she had to support such a claim.

“When you perpetuate violence against a government because of ideological reasons and for reasons to resist and perpetuate violence, that is the definition of domestic terrorism,” Noem said at the time.

Shortly after Pretti was killed, Noem also claimed that Pretti had “brandished” a firearm he was carrying when he had been shot. But video of the killing later contradicted that claim, showing his handgun was not visible until officers had already put their hands on him. The gun was taken off Pretti seconds before he was shot.

Earlier during the hearing, she declined to retract her initial descriptions of both Pretti and Renee Good, who was also killed in Minneapolis by DHS officers weeks before Pretti.

In an exchange with Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, Noem called both situations “tragic” and explained that her description of Pretti and Good were based on reports on the ground.

“Do you retract these statements identifying these individuals as domestic terrorists?” Durbin asked.

“When we have these situations happen, we always offer our condolences to these families. These are tragic situations,” Noem said, adding: “We always work to provide the American people with as much information as possible. We’re relying on reports on the ground and agents who are there.”

The Department of Homeland Security came under intense scrutiny over actions in Minneapolis and conflicting accounts provided by senior officials over the deaths of Pretti and Good.

“Is it so hard to say you were wrong?” Durbin asked.

“I absolutely strive to provide factual information,” she said.

Republican presses Noem on ad buy

Some of the fiercest exchanges with Noem came from Republican Sens. Tillis and John Kennedy of Louisiana.

Kennedy confronted Noem about her agency’s advertising campaign, which, as the senator pointed out, often prominently showcase Noem. ProPublica reported last year the recipient of a lucrative subcontract was Ben Yoho, the husband of a former DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin.

While Noem argued that bids for the advertisements were properly submitted, Kennedy said his research “shows that you did not bid them out” and, in one instance, chose a company that was formed “11 days before you picked them.”

“Look, we all have friends who are qualified. I’m not quibbling with that,” Kennedy said.

The Republican senator added that the $220 million price tag “troubles me” especially when, Kennedy said, Congress “is scratching for every penny.”

“I just can’t agree,” Kennedy said of the spending.

Noem said she had nothing “to do with picking those contractors” and said the president had “tasked me with getting the message out to the country” on the department’s deportation efforts.

Yoho’s company, the Strategy Group, claimed on social media after the hearing it did not have a contract with DHS directly but instead obtained a sub-contract with Safe America. In total, Yoho’s company made “$226,137.17 total for 5 film shoots, 45 produced video advertisements and 6 produced radio advertisements,” according to the company.

GOP senator brings up Cricket and asks Noem to resign

Tillis railed against Noem and the administration’s deportation efforts during the hearing, accusing her office of not providing information on immigration efforts in North Carolina and stalling FEMA aid.

    Tillis is not seeking re-election.

He honed in on statements Noem made before she was part of Trump’s cabinet, including accounts she wrote about in her memoir of her killing her 14-month-old dog, Cricket, and a family goat. Noem wrote in her book that the dog was “untrainable” and that the goat was “nasty and mean.”

“A 14-month old dog is basically a teenager in dog years,” Tillis said.

“You decided to kill that dog because you had not invested the appropriate time and training, and then you have the audacity to go into a book and say it’s a leadership lesson about tough choices,” Tillis said. “And you killed a goat because you said it was behaving badly. You are a farmer. You don’t castrate a goat, they behave badly. You should have probably done that before.”

Tillis accused DHS of arresting innocent American citizens and highlighted the death of several individuals at the hands of DHS agents.

“We’re beginning to get the American people to think that deporting people is wrong,” Tillis said of what he called Noem’s disastrous leadership. “It’s the exact opposite. The way you’re going about deporting them is wrong.”

Tillis also criticized Noem for failing “admit to a mistake” in the shootings of Good and Pretti.

“Law enforcement needs to learn,” he said, “that you don’t protect them by not looking at the facts.”

‘No plans’ to send ICE officers to polling locations. But…

Noem said her department had “no plans” to send immigration enforcement officers to polling locations ahead of this year’s midterm elections.

But pressed repeatedly by Delaware Sen. Chris Coons, Noem declined to rule out the possibility entirely.

Coons asked Noem about comments from Stephen Bannon, a former White House adviser during the first Trump administration, indicating he believed immigration agents should be deployed to polling places.

“Will you rule out the deployment of ICE or CBP to polling places this November?” Coons asked.

Noem responded: “There are no plans to have ICE officers at our polling locations.”

Coons pressed Noem to explicitly rule it out.

Noem responded: “Do you plan on illegal aliens voting in our elections?” She then again repeated that there were “no plans” to deploy immigration officers at polling places in November.

    Confronted over plane use

Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse confronted Noem over the use of an executive jet — displaying a picture, which was first reported by NBC News, of a bedroom inside the jet. NBC reported that the jet cost $70 million.

“What kind of deportee justifies being flown out of the country in a luxury jet with a bedroom and accommodations?” Whitehouse asked.

Noem responded that the picture was not accurate, and that the jet was being refurbished to get rid of the bedroom and would be used for deportation flights along with executive travel.

She said she had been on the plane once.

“The department has found that in purchasing our aircraft that we will save the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars,” she said.

Outside the hearing room, Kennedy sharply criticized Noem’s responses.

“I want to see her succeed, but I’m not going to sit here and watch this kind of spending porn of a cabinet secretary putting herself on TV to the tune of $220-plus million dollars without saying something, and the advertisements are still running,” Kennedy said.

CNN’s Morgan Rimmer contributed to this report.
