Vance: US should get ‘some benefit’ from Greenland if it’s going to be ‘on the hook’ for protecting territory

Vice President JD Vance made remarks in Armenia as Trump administration pushes to acquire Danish territory

Vice President JD Vance said Tuesday that the United States should get “some benefit” from Greenland if it’s going to “be on the hook for protecting this massive landmass.”

Vance told reporters in Armenia that, “it’s very early in the Greenland talks,” amid the Trump administration’s push to acquire the Danish territory.

“We’ve been working quite a bit on this over the last few weeks, but it’s just very simple. Greenland is very important to the national security of the United States of America,” Vance added.

“I do think that some of our allies have under-invested in Arctic security, and if we’re going to invest in Arctic security, if we’re basically going to pay a lot of money and be on the hook for protecting this massive landmass, I think it’s only reasonable for the United States to get some benefit out of that, and that’s going to be the focus of the negotiations here over the next few months,” Vance said.

RUSSIA, CHINA SQUEEZE US ARCTIC DEFENSE ZONE AS TRUMP EYES GREENLAND

President Donald Trump said in mid-January that the U.S. needs Greenland “for the purpose of national security.”

“It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!” Trump said at the time.

A week later, Trump said, “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region.”

NATO CHIEF WARNS EUROPE CAN’T DEFEND ITSELF WITHOUT US AS TENSIONS RISE OVER GREENLAND

“This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations,” the president said on Truth Social.

However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen then insisted that Denmark would not negotiate on its sovereignty despite Trump announcing the “framework” of a deal.

“Security in the Arctic is a matter for the entire NATO alliance. Therefore, it is good and natural that it is also discussed between NATO’s Secretary General and the President of the United States. The Kingdom of Denmark has long worked for NATO to increase its engagement in the Arctic,” Frederiksen noted in a statement, which was written in Danish.

“We have been in close dialogue with NATO and I have spoken to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on an ongoing basis, including both before and after his meeting with President Trump in Davos. NATO is fully aware of the position of the Kingdom of Denmark. We can negotiate on everything political; security, investments, economy. But we cannot negotiate on our sovereignty,” she asserted.

Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt said earlier this month that, “We are pursuing a diplomatic solution through negotiations” with the U.S. and that she is “hopeful and optimistic that we will find common ground that respect our red lines,” according to Reuters.

Ketanji Brown Jackson says Supreme Court justices “get along well”: “A model for learning how to disagree”

    February 10, 2026 / 12:20 PM EST / CBS News

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said Tuesday that the justices on the court “get along well” despite their different viewpoints and believes it’s “a model for learning how to disagree without being disagreeable.”

“The court is very good at compartmentalizing, meaning that we focus on our work,” she told “CBS Mornings.” “We work very hard. We come up with our own individual opinions as to how we think about the law.”

“We’re sort of always thinking about the law in different ways. And so we have learned how to adapt to being in an environment with people who have very strongly held but different views,” she said.

She said the justices as a body and as a group are “very collegial.”

Ketanji Brown Jackson on “CBS Mornings,” Feb. 10, 2026. CBS News

Jackson became the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court when she was sworn in nearly four years ago. She has since emerged as one of the court’s strongest critics of President Trump. Her dissent in last year’s nationwide injunction case, which reined in federal judges’ ability to issue sweeping orders and stemmed from Mr. Trump’s executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship, prompted an unusually sharp reply from Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Five other justices joined Barrett, who said Jackson’s dissent “chooses a startling line of attack.”

When the court ultimately ruled that the administration could move forward with Mr. Trump’s plan, Jackson stood alone, saying the order is “not only truly unfortunate, but also hubristic and senseless.”

As the Supreme Court takes months to come to decisions on other hot-button issues, including Mr. Trump’s tariffs, Jackson said “there are lots of nuanced legal issues that the court has to thoroughly consider.”

“We actually deliberate over a period of time where each of the justices decides how they feel about the issues and writes, and it takes a while to write,” Jackson said.

    “We will make it through”

In the latest edition of her book “Lovely One” geared toward young adults, Jackson includes a speech she gave at a debate tournament while in high school in 1987. She told “CBS Mornings” that the point of the speech was to “really get people to focus on the moment and try to not be so overwhelmed by the circumstance.”

She believes this moment in U.S. history is divided, but said “we’ve certainly had other periods in our history in which we’ve been divided and we’ve come through them.”

“If people really focus on their own values and the things that matter to them, if they invest in their communities and in their loved ones, we will make it through,” she added.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defends visit to Epstein’s island with his family

    February 10, 2026 / 1:40 PM EST / CBS News

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick acknowledged Tuesday visiting Jeffrey Epstein on his private island in 2012, as Senate Democrats called into question his credibility on the issue. Justice Department files on Epstein released recently show Lutnick and Epstein had a closer relationship than Lutnick has previously stated.

Maryland’s Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen recalled that Lutnick had previously claimed to have cut off contact with Epstein, Lutnick’s neighbor in New York, in 2005, “but now it turns out not to be true.” Lutnick said last year he had “limited interactions” with Jeffrey Epstein, but documents show they were in business together as recently as 2014, and emailed as recently as 2018, the year before Epstein’s death.

“The information recently revealed from the Epstein files show that your statements were at best highly misleading,” Van Hollen said. He added later, “Mr. Lutnick that does call into question your fitness for the job you now hold and the question of your credibility.”

Lutnick continued to distance himself from Epstein while admitting to the interactions revealed in the Epstein files. Lutnick said he met with his next-door neighbor two times in 14 years, and “I did not have any relationship with him, I barely had anything to do with that person. Okay?”

But Lutnick admitted he, his wife and kids, and another family visited Epstein on his private Caribbean island.

“We had lunch on the island, that is true, for an hour. Then we left with all of my children, with my nannies and my wife all together. We were on family vacation. We were not apart. To suggest there was anything untoward about that in 2012, I don’t recall why we did it. But we did,” Lutnick said.

Oregon Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley also noted interactions between Lutnick and Epstein — ranging from a business deal to emailed gripes about an art museum’s expansion — that Merkley said “collectively, it suggests that when you said in 2005 you cut off all contact, that was not a full and complete accounting.”

Epstein and Lutnick’s signatures appear on neighboring pages in a 2012 contract, which was first reported by CBS News. The convicted sex offender and the former chairman of the financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald each acquired stakes in a now-shuttered advertising technology company called Adfin. They signed the contract on Dec. 28, 2012, four days after Lutnick’s visit to Epstein’s island.

The deal was struck more than four years after Epstein agreed to enter a guilty plea to Florida state charges of procuring a child for prostitution and soliciting a prostitute. The case raised allegations of a far broader sex trafficking scheme, and Epstein was charged with federal felonies including trafficking.

Democrats on the Appropriations committee urged Lutnick to submit his own records proving his interactions with Epstein were limited to what’s already publicly known.

Lutnick indicated he would consider doing so, but stopped short of promising.

“I will surely talk about that. I hadn’t thought about that. I have nothing to hide, absolutely nothing,” Lutnick said.

A Senate Republican who has routinely broken from the GOP and President Donald Trump announced that she wouldn’t support efforts to pass voter ID legislation.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said in a post on X on Tuesday that she would oppose forthcoming legislation that would enact more stringent election integrity laws backed by both Trump and conservatives in the upper chamber. Her opposition underscores a reality many in the Senate already acknowledge: without extraordinary steps such as nuking the filibuster or support from Democrats (a non-starter), the effort is effectively dead on arrival.

Murkowski panned a pair of bills — the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, dubbed the SAVE America Act, and the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act — two voter ID and election integrity proposals making their way through the House.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, panned conservatives’ and President Donald Trump’s desire to pass voter ID laws and likened the push to one made by congressional Democrats years ago.(Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images)

She noted that when congressional Democrats “attempted to advance sweeping election reform legislation in 2021, Republicans were unanimous in opposition because it would have federalized elections, something we have long opposed.”

“Now, I’m seeing proposals such as the SAVE Act and MEGA that would effectively do just that. Once again, I do not support these efforts,” Murkowski said.

Congressional Democrats under former President Joe Biden tried and failed to enact two election reform bills, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the For the People Act.

Congressional Republicans strongly opposed those efforts, and argued at the time that the bills would effectively nationalize elections and give Democrats control of the election system across the country.

Conservatives’ bid to reshape the election landscape also runs into the Constitution, which delegates election authorities to state and local officials and gives the federal government little input.

“Not only does the U.S. Constitution clearly provide states the authority to regulate the ‘times, places, and manner’ of holding federal elections, but one-size-fits-all mandates from Washington, D.C., seldom work in places like Alaska,” Murkowski said.

“Election Day is fast approaching,” she continued. “Imposing new federal requirements now, when states are deep into their preparations, would negatively impact election integrity by forcing election officials to scramble to adhere to new policies, likely without the necessary resources. Ensuring public trust in our elections is at the core of our democracy, but federal overreach is not how we achieve this.”

Her pushback comes as Trump has called on the GOP to nationalize elections. House Republicans are gearing up to vote on the SAVE America Act and a cohort of Senate Republicans are eying ways to get the bill onto the Senate floor.

Several Senate Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., have come out against Trump’s call to nationalize elections. But public opposition to the voter ID efforts among Republicans is few and far between.

But given the political reality of the Senate, where the 60-vote filibuster threshold is an impossible bar to overcome without Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Senate Democrats’ support, the bill will likely die.

Vice President JD Vance’s X account posted and then deleted a recognition of the Armenian genocide after he paid his respects at a memorial in the country on Tuesday.

The original post from the vice president’s account — which said Vance and second lady Usha Vance attended a wreath-laying ceremony “to honor the victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide” — broke from Trump administration policy, which does not use the word “genocide” to refer to the systematic killing and deportation of Armenians in what is now Turkey.

Except for former President Joe Biden, US presidents have avoided that term for fear of damaging ties with Turkey, a key regional ally, which is currently playing a mediating role between the Trump administration and Iran.

An official with the vice president sought to blame the post on staff who are not part of the delegation traveling with Vance.

The Armenian National Committee of America called the deletion “a denialist action consistent with President Trump’s shameful retreat from honest American remembrance of a crime recognized by all 50 states, the US Congress, the White House, and more than a dozen of our NATO allies.”

Vance — the first sitting US vice president or president to visit the country — told reporters the Armenians asked him to visit the site, calling the massacre “a very terrible thing that happened a little over 100 years ago.”

A Vance spokesperson told CNN: “This is an account managed by staff that primarily exists to share photos and videos of the Vice President’s activities. For the Vice President’s views on the substance of the question, I refer you to the comments he made earlier on the tarmac in response to the pool’s question.”

Vance said he visited the site “out of a sign of respect, both for the victims, but also for the Armenian government.”

“Obviously, I’m the first vice president to ever visit Armenia. They asked us to visit the site. Obviously, it’s a very terrible thing that happened a little over 100 years ago, and something that was just very, very important to them culturally,” said Vance, who added he also plans to visit important sites in Azerbaijan.

The White House’s rapid response X account posted — but later deleted —Vance’s comments on visiting the memorial. CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

The official VP account later reposted a post from Vance press secretary Taylor Van Kirk that showed the second couple at the wreath-laying and included a photo of Vance’s handwritten note in a guest book.

“In solemn remembrance of the lives lost, we honor the resilience and enduring spirit of the Armenian people,” the vice president wrote.

The number of Armenians killed has been a major point of contention. Estimates range from 300,000 to 2 million deaths between 1914 and 1923, with not all of the victims in the Ottoman Empire. But most estimates — including one of 800,000 between 1915 and 1918, made by Ottoman authorities themselves — fall between 600,000 and 1.5 million.

Whether due to killings or forced deportation, the number of Armenians living in Turkey fell from 2 million in 1914 to under 400,000 by 1922.

In 2021, Biden became the first US president to officially recognize the massacre as a genocide, with a statement marking its anniversary that said, “Each year on this day, we remember the lives of all those who died in the Ottoman-era Armenian genocide and recommit ourselves to preventing such an atrocity from ever again occurring.” The statement was welcomed by Armenia but condemned by Turkey, which maintains the killings were part of war time and that there were losses on both sides.

Last year, the Trump administration issued a statement on April 24 commemorating “Meds Yeghern,” an Armenian term, without translating it into English as genocide.

“Beginning in 1915, one and a half million Armenians were exiled and marched to their deaths in the final years of the Ottoman Empire. On this Day of Remembrance, we again join the Great Armenian Community in America, and around the World, in mourning the many lives that were lost,” the statement said.

During the first Trump administration, the White House asked Republican senators to block the unanimous consent request on a resolution recognizing the mass killings of Armenians from 1915 to 1923 as genocide, on the grounds that it could undercut negotiations with Turkey. The resolution passed the House and Senate in 2019.

FBI releases new photos, videos of subject in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, showing masked person on porch

    February 10, 2026 / 1:49 PM EST / CBS News

Surveillance photos and videos of a subject in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, were released by authorities on Tuesday.

The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona posted the images to social media, showing a masked person wearing a backpack on the porch of the Tucson, Arizona, home. FBI Director Kash Patel also posted videos of the individual outside the home.

A 27-second video shows the person approaching the front door and raising a gloved hand to the camera before walking away. A 14-second video shows the person facing the camera holding a flashlight in their mouth before covering the camera lens with some vegetation.

The FBI said that law enforcement uncovered the images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with a home security camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door on the morning of her disappearance. She was reported missing Feb. 1.

Savannah Guthrie reacted to the new images on social media, writing: “We believe she is still alive. Bring her home.”

Two of the images released by the FBI of a subject seen on surveillance video in the Nancy Guthrie case. FBI

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters last week that a doorbell camera at Guthrie’s home was disconnected at approximately 1:47 a.m. that day.

The FBI and the sheriff’s department said the images were recovered from “residual data located in backend systems.”

Two of the images released by the FBI of a subject seen on surveillance video in the Nancy Guthrie case. FBI

Two law enforcement sources told CBS News the man in the images is considered a subject that they are seeking to identify.

The person at this point is not considered a suspect or a person of interest, according to the sources.

Savannah Guthrie has asked people across the country for help with the search, saying in a social media video Monday that the family believed Nancy Guthrie was “still out there” and they don’t know where.

“I’m coming on just to ask you, not just for your prayers but no matter where you are, even if you’re far from Tucson, if you see anything, if you hear anything, if there’s anything at all that seems strange to you, that you report to law enforcement,” Savannah Guthrie said. “We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help.”

The latest deadline from an apparent ransom note that demanded payment in bitcoin passed Monday. An FBI spokesperson told CBS News on Monday that the bureau wasn’t aware of any continued communication between the Guthrie family and the suspected kidnappers.

“Someone has that one piece of information that can help us bring Nancy home,” the spokesperson said. “We need that person to share what they know. Please call us at 1-800-CALL-FBI.”

The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery or a conviction in the case.

The search for Guthrie is in its second week. Critical medication was left behind at her home, adding more urgency to efforts to find her.
