Rare 2,000-year-old treasure unearthed by metal detectorists in Wales: “We were astonished”

    Updated on: February 27, 2026 / 2:06 PM EST / CBS News

Metal detectorists in western Wales found two lead ingots that date back to the Roman era, a Welsh museum said Tuesday. The pieces are the first of their kind to be found in the region.

Metal detectorists Nick Yallope and Peter Nicolas found the pieces while searching land owned by farmer Geraint Jenkins in Ceredigion, according to a news release from Welsh national museum Amgueddfa Cymru. The pair had permission to search and dig on the land.

Ceredigion is a coastal area with Celtic heritage. Museum curator Carrie Canham said its “rich mineral and ore deposits” were a major reason the Romans sought to conquer this area.” Lead mined in Ceredigion during the Roman era spread across the empire, she said.

The ingots, also known as lead “pigs,” were used to produce tools and weapons, according to CBS News partner BBC News. They date back to AD 87, based on lettering written on them, the museum said. During that time, Rome was ruled by Emperor Domitian, who was known for empire building, the BBC reported.

In 2005, archaeologists found the remains of a Roman lead smelting site in a peat bog in Ceredigion. Nearby mines may have supplied the lead, the BBC reported at the time, and the metal may have been transported throughout the Roman empire.

The pieces were found on grazing land about 18 inches deep. The pieces were less than six feet apart from each other, the museum said.

“I feel incredibly proud to have uncovered something so rare and important to our local heritage. Unlocking a new chapter of our area’s past, is incredibly exciting,” Yallope said in the museum’s news release.

“It’s remarkable to think that land we now farm organically once played a role in a much wider Roman landscape,” Jenkins said.

The pieces will be displayed in a new archaeology gallery opening at the Amgueddfa Ceredigion museum in spring 2027, Canham said.

Metal detectorists in Wales need permission to explore private land, and any items that are believed to be treasure must be reported to the country’s Portable Antiquities Scheme. The organization then examines the items to determine their value.

Between 2020 and 2022, a hoard of Bronze Age artifacts including axes, spearheads, rings and a sword scabbard were discovered by metal detectorists in Wales. Those artifacts were declared treasure by the government in 2023.

Kansas sued over new transgender ID and bathroom law

    • Summary
    • Law requires identification to show sex at birth
    • ACLU represents plaintiffs claiming law violates equality and privacy rights
    • Lawsuit alleges numerous constitutional violations

Feb 27 (Reuters) – Two transgender men in Kansas filed a lawsuit on Friday seeking to strike down a new state law that invalidated the driver’s licenses and birth certificates of more than 1,000 transgender people.

The American Civil Liberties Union is representing the plaintiffs, who claim in the lawsuit, filed in Kansas state court, that the law violates their rights to equality, due process and privacy under the state constitution.

The law makes Kansas the only U.S. state to invalidate previously approved changes to gender markers on identification documents, part of a broader push by Republican-led legislatures to restrict the rights of transgender people.

The sweeping law, which took effect on Thursday, requires state residents to change their gender identification on driver’s licenses and birth certificates to the sex they were assigned at birth, and bans them from changing their gender on those documents in the future.

The law also prohibits transgender people from using multi-occupancy bathrooms in government buildings that do not correspond to their sex assigned at birth, and authorizes private citizens to sue people who violate the law.

The plaintiffs, who filed the lawsuit under pseudonyms, said the law will require them to disclose their transgender status each time they present identification and expose them to harassment and violence when they use public bathrooms. They said they would seek an order temporarily blocking the law while the case proceeds.

Kansas officials on Thursday said identification documents had been invalidated for more than 1,000 state residents. Affected residents must pay for new driver’s licenses.

The office of Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, a Republican, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The defendants in the lawsuit are Kobach’s office and state agencies that issue identification documents and maintain government buildings.

At least eight other states, including Texas, Florida and Indiana, have prohibited such changes moving forward, and several of those laws are being challenged in court.

Transgender people in the United States have faced increasing restrictions at the state and national levels. Republican President Donald Trump has issued a series of executive actions targeting transgender rights since returning to office last year.

One Trump directive stated that the U.S. government will recognize only two sexes: male and female. Others sought to exclude transgender athletes from female sports and require applicants for U.S. passports to list the sex they were assigned at birth.

Kobach’s office in 2023 filed a lawsuit claiming that changing the gender markers on driver’s licenses, which had been permitted up to that point, was already unlawful under state law. A state court rejected those arguments last year.

State lawmakers then introduced the bill later enacted into law after the Kansas legislature overrode Democratic Governor Laura Kelly’s veto.

State Farm to offer $100 average refund to car insurance customers

    Updated on: February 27, 2026 / 12:20 PM EST / CBS News

State Farm is issuing an average refund of $100 per vehicle to its auto insurance customers in what the company says is the largest dividend in its history.

The insurer said Thursday that the refunds will go out to policyholders of 49 million vehicles this summer. The exact payment amount will vary based on where a customer lives and their individual premiums. All told, the refunds will amount to $5 billion total in cash flowing back into customers’ wallets, State Farm said in a statement.

It is unclear what form the refunds will take, although the Bloomington, Illinois-based company told CBS News that the cash distribution “will not be issued as a credit.” A spokesperson said more details on refunds will be shared in the coming months.

State Farm cited “stronger than expected underwriting performance” and shrinking auto repair costs as factors that enabled it to issue the coverage refunds.

State Farm provides insurance for autos, homes and small businesses and has nearly 97 million policyholders.

Other insurance companies have also recently moved to cut their coverage rates and reimburse customers. USAA, which provides insurance to members of the military and their families, said in January that it delivered a total of $3.8 billion in savings to customers last year.

Scouting America, the organization previously known as the Boy Scouts of America, has agreed to make several changes, according to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

The group is under pressure from the U.S. Department of War, which has threatened to yank its support.

In a video message issued Friday, Hegseth said he had been “very seriously considering ending our support of scouting altogether,” accusing the group of adopting “radical, woke ideology.”

But he said the organization has agreed to implement changes, mentioning five, while indicating there were more.

“First, Scouting America has agreed to comply immediately with the provisions of Executive Order 14173. This includes reviewing and replacing politicized, divisive, and discriminatory language throughout the organization, programs, and all publications. No more DEI, zero,” he declared.

He said that a DEI-related merit badge has been discontinued.

“Third, Scouting America will modify its policy to make clear that membership will be based solely on biological sex at birth and not gender identity,” he said.

“That means that the application, any application, will have only two sex designations, male and female, and the application must match the applicant’s birth certificate. Scouting will also make clear that biological boys and girls will not be allowed to occupy or share intimate spaces together. Toilets, showers, tents, anywhere like that.

“Fourth, Scouting America will honor those who serve by waiving the registration fees for children of active duty, guard, and reserve families,” he noted. “Fifth, in partnership with the War Department, Scouting America will introduce a new military service merit badge.”

[BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA NAME CHANGE BECOMES OFFICIAL IN EFFORT TO BE MORE ‘INCLUSIVE’]

“Scouting America is proud to uphold our longstanding commitment to military families across the globe through a renewed, strengthened partnership with the Department of War,” the organization said in a statement Friday.

“Over several months, we engaged in dialogue with Department leadership to align on how we could deepen our service to military families, while making programmatic updates to comply with Executive Order 14173.

“Today we are moving forward with implementing new programmatic elements that deliver on that mission: waiving registration fees for military families, launching a new merit badge focused on military service and veterans, and reinforcing our commitment to Scouting’s foundational ideas: leadership, character, duty to God, duty to country and service,” the release noted.

Earlier this month, Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs Sean Parnell said in a post on X, “Our review of the DoW’s financial assistance and partnership with Scouting America, including its quadrennial National Jamboree celebration, has been rigorous and ongoing.”

Hegseth said in his video message Friday the department will evaluate the group’s progress in six months.

He said the Department of War’s “support for Scouting America is contingent on them making substantial progress toward reaching these and many other positive changes in the next six months.”

[HEGSETH APPEALS RULING BLOCKING PUNISHMENT OF DEM SENATOR OVER ‘ILLEGAL ORDERS’ VIDEO]

“If we’re unsatisfied with Scouting America’s progress toward and commitment to the agreed-upon reforms, we will find them in violation of the president’s executive order and cease our support,” he said.

“Ideally, I believe the Boy Scouts should go back to being the Boy Scouts, as originally founded, a group that develops boys into men. Maybe someday.”

This simple tip can save you tens of thousands of dollars on your mortgage, experts say

    February 27, 2026 / 2:35 PM EST / CBS News

As mortgage rates recede to their lowest levels in years, experts say that shopping around for the right loan could save first-time home buyers tens of thousands of dollars.

The average rate for a conventional 30-year mortgage across the U.S.fell this week below 6%, down almost an entire percentage point from January of 2025 and the lowest since 2022, according to data from Freddie Mac.

Better rates are expected to attract more house-hunters as the spring buying season heats up. But experts advise buyers not to settle until they’ve shopped around, noting that rates can vary a lot depending on the lender. The average gap between the lowest and highest APR is 0.74 percentage points, according to LendingTree, an online loan marketplace.

    How much can I save?

Although experts don’t expect mortgage rates to decline much further this year, predicting they will hover around 6% for a 30-year loan, they said homebuyers can now find lower-cost loans as lenders compete for business.

“We’re seeing a lot more dispersion with what lenders are quoting,” Kate Wood, a lending expert at NerdWallet, told CBS News. “So at any time, absolutely, you should be requesting rate quotes from multiple mortgage lenders.”

The lowest average APR for a 30-year loan is 5.82%, according to LendingTree. Compared with the highest average APR of 6.56%, that lower rate could save borrowers nearly $58,000 over the life of the loan, or about $1,930 annually, LendingTree calculated.

At 5.82%, versus the national average of 5.98%, a borrower could save $12,352 over the life of a 30-year home loan, according to Matt Schulz, chief consumer finance analyst at LendingTree.

1/1 Skip Ad Continue watching after the ad

As usual, securing a low rate hinges on an individual’s credit record, while other factors that can affect borrowing costs include how much a buyer can put down for a home and a loan’s duration.

LendingTree based its calculations on the lowest average loan offers that homebuyers who use its platform received from lenders between January 1 and February 26.

Even if home buyers don’t qualify for a lower rate, they can still benefit by comparing rates, Schulz told CBS News. “It only takes a small fraction of a percent movement to potentially save tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the mortgage.”

Schulz emphasized that by shopping around, buyers can solicit competing loan offers, which can help in negotiating the best terms with their preferred lender.

“It’s hard to overstate the importance of a lower interest rate with a mortgage, just because it is, for most people, the biggest purchase they’ll ever make,” he said.

    • Trump says Rubio dealing with Cuba at ‘high level’
    • US president says Cuban government talking with US
    • Cuban government has said it is not in high-level talks with US

WASHINGTON, Feb 27 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday raised the prospect of a “friendly takeover” of Cuba, telling reporters at the White House that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was dealing with the issue at a “very high level.”

“The Cuban government is talking with us, and they’re in a big deal of trouble,” Trump said as he left the White House for a trip to Texas. “They have no money. They have no anything right now, but they’re talking with us, and maybe we’ll have a friendly takeover of Cuba.”

Trump described Cuba as a failing nation in need of change, adding that he had been hearing about the country’s woes since he was a little boy.

“I can see that happening. Marco Rubio is dealing on it and at a very high level,” he said. “They have no money, they have no oil, they have no food. And it’s really right now a nation in deep trouble and they want our help,” he said.

HAVANA HAS SAID NOT IN HIGH-LEVEL TALKS

The Cuban government has said it is not in any high-level talks with the United States but has not outright denied press reports that U.S. officials may be in informal talks with Raul Guillermo Rodriguez Castro, the grandson of former Cuban President Raul Castro.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

Axios reported this month that Rubio had been holding secret talks with the grandson of Cuba’s former leader. U.S. officials close to Rubio met with the grandson again on the sidelines of this week’s regional Caribbean Community conference in St. Kitts and Nevis, the Miami Herald reported on Thursday.

Tensions with Cuba ratcheted up after Cuban forces this week killed four exiles and wounded six others who sailed into Cuban waters aboard a Florida-registered speedboat and opened fire on a Cuban patrol. Rubio denied it was a U.S. operation and said no U.S. government personnel were involved.

The incident took place as the United States has blocked virtually all oil shipments to the island, increasing pressure on the Communist government. Last month, U.S. forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, removing a key Cuban ally from power.

Rubio has railed against the Cuban government in recent weeks, calling the status quo there unsustainable, and saying Cuba needed to change “dramatically.”

Cuban exiles who are largely concentrated in Miami have long dreamed of overthrowing the Cuban government or seeing it fall and have in the past plotted against the government that was established by the late revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

Trump mentioned the large Cuban community, saying a takeover of Cuba by the U.S. could be “something good … very positive” for people who had been expelled from the country.

“We have people living here that want to go back to Cuba, and they’re very happy with what’s going on,” he said.

President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that he is “not happy” with the way Iran is negotiating.

“I’m not happy with the fact that they’re not willing to give us what we have to have. So I’m not thrilled with that. We’ll see what happens, we’re talking later. We’ll have some additional talks today. But, no, I’m not happy with the way they’re going,” Trump said.

The president also told reporters that he had yet to make a final decision on striking Iran, something that many have speculated could occur in the near future.

“I guess you could say there’s always a risk. You know, when there’s war, there’s a risk in anything both good and bad,” Trump said.

The president then spoke about operations against Iran under his first and second terms, such as the assassination of Gen. Qassim Soleimani, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ elite Quds Force, and last summer’s Operation Midnight Hammer. He said that “everything’s worked out” so far.

TRUMP ISSUES STERN IRAN WARNING AS TEHRAN ANGRILY REACTS TO SPEECH AMID MUTED WORLD REACTION

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have escalated, even as the two sides take part in indirect nuclear negotiations. The president on Feb. 19 gave Iran a deadline of roughly 10 to 15 days to reach an agreement, and during his State of the Union address, he underscored that his urgency to make a deal was backed by force.

“I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror… to have a nuclear weapon,” he said on Tuesday.

    Image 48: placeholder

“We are in negotiations with them,” Trump added. “They want to make a deal, but we haven’t heard those secret words: ‘We will never have a nuclear weapon.’”

Trump has repeatedly threatened major consequences in the event that the U.S. and Iran are unable to strike a deal.

While the president said he had not made a decision on the strikes, the State Department appeared to be acting out of caution on Friday as it authorized all non-essential employees at the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem to leave Israel. While the warning issued by the embassy did not mention Iran by name, it referenced “increased regional tensions.”

Partial government shutdown starts to hit TSA workers’ paychecks

    24 min ago | PUBLISHED Feb 27, 2026, 2:10 PM ET | CNN Politics

    By

    [Tami Luhby]

Transportation Security Administration workers will receive only a portion of their next paycheck, which they are set to receive as soon as Friday, according to a union official. The reduced pay comes as the partial government shutdown ends its second week with no resolution in sight.

The impasse could lead to staffing shortages and airport delays for some travelers, especially the longer TSA workers go without pay. (Air traffic controllers, however, are not affected by this partial shutdown.)

The agency is also making some changes to at least one trusted traveler program, temporarily halting the Global Entry program. Earlier this week, the Department of Homeland Security announced it would also suspend the popular TSA PreCheck program but then reversed that decision.

While some DHS workers are continuing to be paid, many other employees throughout the agency are also set to receive partial paychecks soon unless Congress acts. Most affected workers will only be paid for the second week of February in their next checks since the agency’s funding lapsed as of February 14.

These smaller paychecks will be the last many DHS employees receive until Congress comes to an agreement to fund DHS for part or all of the fiscal year, which ends September 30. The White House and Democrats have been negotiating reforms to the agency’s immigration enforcement operations after two US citizens were fatally shot by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis in January. Senate Democrats are demanding changes before they’ll support appropriating more money for DHS.

Many TSA employees are already starting to struggle financially, concerned about how they’ll afford their March housing costs and day care, among other expenses, said Johnny Jones, secretary/treasurer of the American Federation of Government Employees TSA Council 100, the union representing 46,000 uniformed TSA workers.

“You’re going to see TSA officers in food bank lines in a couple of days,” he said, adding that several colleagues have taken out payday loans.

In total, about 61,000 TSA employees must remain on the job at the nation’s more than 430 commercial airports during a shutdown. Many live paycheck to paycheck, Ha Nguyen McNeill, a senior official performing the duties of TSA administrator, said in written testimony for a House subcommittee hearing before the funding lapsed.

Overall, more than 90% of DHS’ 272,000 employees will continue working during a lapse, according to the agency’s September shutdown plan covering the first five days of an impasse. More than 93% of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and US Customs and Border Protection workers will remain on the job.

Only about 44,500 staffers will continue to be paid through other appropriations, according to the shutdown plan.

DHS has other resources to draw on, including a $165 billion infusion from last summer’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which funneled $75 billion to ICE, alone, and $64 billion to CBP.

The president’s signature policy bill gives DHS Secretary Kristi Noem wide-ranging power to move money around to carry out the agency’s operations.

DHS is using funds from the package to pay nearly 58,000 CBP employees, including officers and border patrol enforcement personnel, according to an email sent this week by the National Treasury Employees Union, obtained by CNN.

Last fall, Noem said that 70,000 law enforcement personnel, including in CBP, ICE and other divisions, would receive their paychecks amid that shutdown.

Civilian Coast Guard workers will receive about half their paycheck on or around March 2, according to a FAQ posted by the division. Military Coast Guard members received a full paycheck on February 15, the FAQ said.

Noem said Coast Guard members would continue to be paid, according to a spokesperson for Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican from New York, who had raised concerns with President Donald Trump last week. Military personnel are scheduled to get their next paycheck on Friday. (It’s unclear whether civilian employees will also continue to receive full paychecks.)

DHS referred questions on pay to the White House Office of Management and Budget, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Federal employees are guaranteed to receive back pay once the shutdown ends, according to a 2019 law.

Nancy Mace says ‘unhinged’ Hillary Clinton erupted during closed-door Epstein deposition

By Elizabeth Elkind | Fox News

    Published February 27, 2026 2:28pm EST

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., says Hillary Clinton refused to answer questions when lawmakers presented her with photographs of former President Bill Clinton with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., claimed that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was “unhinged” during part of her closed-door testimony to the House Oversight Committee on Thursday.

“I asked her a very pointed question, and you’ll see that in the transcript and the video that comes out, and you’ll see how she responded as well, screaming,” Mace told reporters on Friday morning.

Asked to elaborate, she repeated the word again when telling reporters, “I hope that President Clinton is less unhinged today than his wife was yesterday. You’ll see it.”

Democrats, however, swiftly disputed Mace’s account.

Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, said shortly afterward: “I hope that the Republicans release the actual video unedited immediately, because to say that the secretary was screaming, I think, is beyond mischaracterization.”

He said House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., should release the unedited video “right now.”

But Mace dug in on her account with a new statement sent to media on Friday morning.

“Yesterday’s deposition with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be public soon, and you are not going to want to miss it,” she said. “We asked very pointed questions and got three rounds with her. She was screaming. Unhinged and combative every time we brought up Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Not exactly the reaction you’d expect from someone claiming she ‘barely knew them.’”

She continued, “Today, former President Bill Clinton sits down with the Oversight Committee. We have just as many questions for him, maybe more. Let’s see if he can keep it together better than his wife did.”

Hillary Clinton’s spokesman Nick Merrill pushed back on the characterization, according to CNN.

“Was she appalled that Congresswoman Mace wouldn’t let her answer a question about her work as a senator after the murder of 3,000 Americans on 9/11? Absolutely,” Merrill added, the outlet reported.

Fox News Digital reached out to Merrill for comment but did not immediately hear back.

It’s not immediately clear what Mace questioned Clinton on in any of her three rounds.

The former secretary of state’s deposition came just a day before her husband, President Bill Clinton, is sharing his own testimony before the committee.

Hillary Clinton told the committee she could not recall ever meeting Epstein and that she only knew his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell as an “acquaintance.”

When US President Donald Trump addressed the American people on Tuesday night, he claimed that Iran is “working to build missiles that will soon reach the United States of America.”

That assertion is not backed up by US intelligence, sources told CNN.

It was one of several claims about threats from Iran made publicly by the Trump administration as it lays the groundwork for possible military action, even as they continue to say the US president wants to reach a diplomatic solution.

An unclassified assessment from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) from 2025 said that Iran could develop a “militarily-viable” intercontinental ballistic missile by 2035 “should Tehran decide to pursue the capability.”

According to two sources, the claim that Iran will soon have a missile capable of hitting the US is not backed up by intelligence — there is no intelligence to suggest that Iran is pursuing an ICBM program to hit the US at this time, the sources said.

Iran does, however, possess short range ballistic missiles that could threaten US bases and personnel in the region, as the administration has warned.

Three sources told CNN there has been no change in recent assessments about Iran’s intercontinental ballistic missile aspirations.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly responded to CNN’s reporting, saying “President Trump is absolutely right to highlight the grave concern posed by Iran, a country that chants ‘death to America,’ possessing intercontinental ballistic missiles.”

The State Department did not reply to a request for comment before publication.

Speaking to reporters Friday, Trump said that he is “not happy” with ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran over that country’s nuclear program, saying that Iran was “not willing to give us what we have to have.”

He said he had not “made a final decision” on whether he would proceed with military strikes, saying that there would be additional discussions.

The US has amassed its largest collection of military hardware in the Middle East since the invasion of Iraq in 2003 as Trump has repeatedly suggested he might take military action against Iran.

The matter of Iranian missile technology did not come up in a briefing with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and the “Gang of Eight” congressional leaders this week, sources familiar with the briefing said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview released this week that his country was not developing long-range missiles.

“We have deliberately limited the range of our missiles to 2,000 kilometers,” he told India Today TV, saying the missiles were for defense.

Pressed on Trump’s claim that Iran could “soon” have missiles that could reach the US, Rubio said he would not speculate “as to how far away they are,” but said Iran is “certainly” trying to achieve intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“You’ve seen them increasing the range of the missiles they have now, and clearly they are headed in the pathway to one day being able to develop weapons that could reach the continental US,” he told reporters at a press conference in St. Kitts Wednesday.

He argued that Iran’s refusal to discuss its ballistic missile program in negotiations is “a big problem.” The rounds of discussions between Washington and Tehran have, so far, only focused on nuclear issues.

Asked about the DIA report on Iranian intercontinental ballistic missile development, Rubio said, “I won’t comment on assessments or anything that the Intelligence Community says. Suffice it to say that it’s a threat. We can see that it’s possible.”

“Beyond just the nuclear program they possess these conventional weapons that are solely designed to attack America and attack Americans, if they so choose to do so. These things have to be addressed,” the top US diplomat said.

On the nuclear program, Rubio acknowledged that Iran is “not enriching right now,” but said “they’re trying to get to the point where they ultimately can.”

However, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff – one of two main US negotiators – claimed in an interview released last Saturday that Iran was “probably a week away from having industrial-grade bombmaking material.” That claim came despite the Trump administration’s repeated assertions that the US had “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear program in military strikes last year.

According to a source, intelligence shows that Iran is actively trying to build back its enrichment capability, including installing additional centrifuges, getting back online centrifuges that survived military strikes last year, and rebuilding facilities – many of which were damaged or destroyed – needed to weaponize the enriched uranium.

However, sources and experts say that work would take far longer than a week. And, according to a source, the work to build back the nuclear program is happening in places that are not likely to be impacted by military strikes.
