Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani arrived Friday morning in Washington, D.C., where he is meeting with Vice President JD Vance to discuss topics including the Iran war. A day earlier, the prime minister told news outlet al-Araby al-Jadeed there is a “high probability” that the U.S. and Iran will reach a deal.

Speaking Friday morning in Italy, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. expects to receive Iran’s response to the draft agreement for ending the war “today at some point.”

“We’re expecting a response from (Iran) — we’ll see what the response entails,” Rubio told reporters. He added that the hope is that it’s something that “can put us into a serious process of negotiation.”

The prime minister, who also serves as the minister of foreign affairs, is the emirate’s top diplomat. He has been a conduit for the U.S. on some of the thornier issues involving Gaza, Afghanistan and Iran. Qatar is also the base for U.S. Central Command.

Al-Thani’s optimistic remarks came hours before the U.S. “self-defense strikes” and Mr. Trump’s comment that a deal “might not happen, but it could happen any day.”

Overnight the UAE said it shot down two ballistic missiles and three drones from Iran. Earlier Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi posted on social media that “every time a diplomatic solution is on the table, the U.S. opts for a reckless military adventure.”

Pakistan has served as the convening country for the diplomatic talks to date, but many countries are involved in efforts to end the war. Yesterday in Beijing, GOP Sen. Steve Daines of Montana thanked Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for meeting with Iran’s top diplomat and the PRC’s work to “de-escalate tensions” and bring peace to the Middle East. Daines did not mention that China remains a top trading partner and purchaser of Iranian oil.

US nonfarm payrolls beat expectations in April, but some weakness lurking underneath

    • Summary
    • Nonfarm payrolls increase 115,000 in April, above expectations for a 62,000 gain
    • The number of part-time workers rises 445,000 to 4.9 million
    • Unemployment rate unchanged at 4.3% as people drop out of the labor force

WASHINGTON, May 8 (Reuters) – U.S. employment increased more than expected in April, pointing to continued labor market stability and reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve would leave interest rates unchanged for some time while monitoring the economic fallout from the war with Iran.

But the closely watched employment report from the Labor Department on Friday also showed ‌some strains in the labor market. More people worked part-time for economic reasons last month, with the number jumping by 445,000 to 4.9 million.

Household employment declined, but was partly offset by dropouts from the labor force, keeping the unemployment rate unchanged at 4.3% after rounding.

“The economy is still creating jobs, and there is no evidence of a labor-market collapse,” said Sung Won Sohn, a finance and economics professor at Loyola Marymount University.

“But the increase in unemployed workers, the decline in the labor force and the heavy dependence on healthcare-related hiring all point to a labor market that is gradually losing strength. The Fed will probably read this report as a reason to wait, not a reason to cut.”

Nonfarm payrolls increased by 115,000 jobs last month after an upwardly revised 185,000 advance in March, the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics said. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast payrolls rising by 62,000 jobs after a previously reported 178,000 rebound in March.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

Estimates ranged from a loss of 15,000 jobs to a gain of 150,000 positions. Wages increased 3.6% in the 12 months through April after gaining 3.4% in March.

    Nonfarm payrolls actual v estimated

The labor market stumbled last year, with economists blaming uncertainty wrought by President Donald Trump’s trade policy. Trump’s sweeping tariffs early this year were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. The U.S. Court of International Trade ruled on Thursday that a replacement of those duties was unjustified. The administration’s immigration policy has also undercut the labor market by reducing labor supply.

Economists said it was too early for the effects of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran to show. The conflict has raised gasoline and diesel prices as well as the cost of other commodities that are shipped through the Strait of Hormuz.

    HEALTHCARE IS DOMINATING EMPLOYMENT GAINS

Payrolls appeared to be settling down after being volatile since mid-2025. Economists have attributed the swings to an adjustment to the birth-and-death model, which the government uses to estimate how many jobs were gained or lost because of companies opening or closing in a given month. Some said a large turnover in firms created was making it hard for the BLS to estimate job creation associated with new companies.

Weather, strikes and government job cuts as well as big ‌changes to the labor force as the Trump administration cracks down on illegal immigration have also added to volatility, they said. Economists recommended looking at the three-month moving average of payrolls.

Job growth averaged 48,000 per month over the past three months. The healthcare sector again led the increase in payrolls in April, adding 37,000 jobs, mostly at nursing and residential care facilities as well as home healthcare services, reflecting an aging population.

Transportation and warehousing employment increased by 30,000, boosted by demand for couriers and messengers. Still, employment in the sector was down by 105,000 since peaking in February 2025. Retail payrolls rose by 22,000 jobs while the social assistance sector added 17,000 positions.

But the federal government shed another 9,000 positions and employment is down by 348,000, or 11.5%, since hitting a peak in October 2024. The White House last year launched an unprecedented campaign to slash the federal workforce as it seeks to remake the government. But there has recently been a push in some agencies to rebuild staff levels.

There were job losses in the information, manufacturing and financial activities industries. The share of industries reporting job growth fell to 53.8% from 56.8% in March.

U.S. interest rate futures scaled back expectations for a rate hike by year-end and increased bets the U.S. central bank would stay on hold after the data. The Fed last week left its benchmark overnight interest rate in the 3.50%-3.75% range, citing inflation worries.

U.S. stocks opened higher. The dollar was little changed against a basket of currencies. U.S. Treasury yields fell.

Details of the household survey from which the unemployment rate is calculated were weak. Household employment dropped by 226,000 jobs while 92,000 people dropped out of the labor force. The labor force participation rate fell to 61.8% from 61.9% in March. The number of people unemployed for less than five weeks increased by 358,000 to 2.496 million.

    Shows change in workforce

Lower immigration and an aging population meant the economy needed to create between zero and 50,000 jobs per month to keep up with growth in the working-age population, economists estimated. With the so-called breakeven level of job growth much lower than in prior years, they did not expect a surge in the unemployment rate, even if employment gains slowed considerably.

White House hosting anti-abortion activists amid Trump backlash

Senior Trump aides will host anti-abortion activists for a meeting at the White House on Friday, in an effort to temper growing intra-party criticism over the administration’s priorities, a person familiar with the matter told CNN.

Anti-abortion activists have expressed deep frustration over a stalled effort to limit access to the abortion pill mifepristone, with Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser explicitly blaming President Donald Trump earlier this week: “Trump is the problem.”

Several other anti-abortion activists have also taken aim at Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary, who they believe is slow-walking efforts to crack down on regulations permitting wide distribution of mifepristone.

Dannenfelser is expected to attend the Friday meeting at the White House, which was first reported by Semafor.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, women have been able to obtain mifepristone — one of the two drugs in the medication abortion regimen — through telehealth appointments. The Biden administration finalized rules that ended the requirement that the pills be obtained through an in-person doctor’s visit in 2023, a year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe.

The Supreme Court temporarily restored telehealth and mail access to the abortion pill mifepristone earlier this week, after a lower court reinstated the in-person requirement. The “administrative stay” is far from a final decision but rather maintains the status quo for a few days while the court reviews emergency appeals filed Saturday by the drug’s manufacturer and the maker of a generic version.

Trump’s Department of Justice did not take a position on the mifepristone issue before the Supreme Court.

In a statement, White House spokeswoman Allison Schuster called Trump the “most pro-life and pro-family president in American history,” and said the administration “continues to engage with stakeholders and activists in this important community to advance the President’s pro-life agenda.”

The meeting is part of a wider-ranging effort to shore up Trump’s and Republicans’ standing with various parts of the GOP coalition ahead of the midterm elections.

Trump last month met with a group of “Make America Healthy Again” influencers who had criticized the White House over its decision to side with agricultural corporations in encouraging more production of a controversial weedkiller.

Omar camp breaks silence on fraud probe, blames Walz, Trump as new claims clash with earlier statements

    2026-05-08T10:17:40-04:00 / Fox News

A former top Omar aide claims the MEALS Act ‘never even passed’ despite previously writing that Omar ‘wrote and passed’ it

By Andrew Mark Miller, Fox News

    Published May 8, 2026 10:17am EDT

Rep Walter Hudson: It is ‘very likely’ Rep Omar was involved in billions of dollars of fraud

Minnesota state Rep. Walter Hudson discusses Rep. Ilhan Omar’s deadline to turn over documents to the Minnesota Fraud Committee regarding the ‘Feeding Our Future’ alleged fraud scheme and more on ‘The Will Cain Show.’

FIRST ON FOX: Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has not publicly or privately responded to a top investigative committee in Minnesota’s request for information on her possible ties to the massive fraud scandal, but a recent email from one of her former top staffers to the committee sheds light on how her camp may view the situation and who they blame.

“As the District Director for Congresswoman Ilhan Omar from 2019-2022, I read with interest your comments in Session Daily regarding H.R.6187 – MEALS Act,” former Omar District Director Kendal Killian wrote in an email, obtained by Fox News Digital, Wednesday afternoon to the Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee Chair Kristin Robbins. The email was also sent to Rep. Dave Pinto, the lead Democrat on the committee.

Killian wrote, “If the quote is accurate, you said, ‘She passed the MEALS Act in March 2020.’ Given that you were elected in 2018, I find it surprising that I need to explain to you how a bill becomes law, but one person cannot unilaterally pass legislation.”

Republicans have long argued that the pandemic-era school meal waivers tied to the MEALS Act, sponsored by Omar, helped create the conditions that enabled the massive Feeding Our Future fraud scheme, which federal prosecutors say totaled roughly $250 million.

Killian went on to explain to Robbins, who has previously served as a legislative director in Congress, that because Republicans controlled the Senate and the White House when the larger bill was passed, that they have “responsibility for implementation” of the legislation.

“So your characterization that Rep. Ilhan Omar passed this legislation unilaterally (and oversaw its execution) is off base,” Killian said. Killian went further in his effort to distance Omar from the legislation, claiming that the bill critics have been citing “never even passed.”

Again, it is bizarre to have to explain this to a State Representative, but maybe you need some help,” Killian’s email says. He claimed that Robbins is suffering from “confusion,” because “similar legislative language to that in the MEALS Act was included in the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.”

ILHAN OMAR PRESSED TO EXPLAIN HOW FRAUD IN MINNESOTA GOT ‘SO OUT OF CONTROL’

Minnesota state Rep. Kristin Robbins delivers an opening statement as she testifies alongside Minnesota State Rep. Walter Hudson during a hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee about the Trump Administration’s decision to freeze $10 billion in child care funds for families with low incomes in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota and New York at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 7, 2026, in Washington, D.C.(Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

“While the original Meals Act (which never passed) was more similar to universal school meals legislation Omar championed and Representative Sydney Jordan in Minnesota later shepherded, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (supported by McConnell and signed by Trump) added waiver authority that facilitated much of the Feeding Our Future fraud,” Killian wrote. “The fraud was not committed under any bill authored by Omar, but rather under broader COVID-19 legislation and by taking advantage of USDA emergency waivers granted by the Trump administration. Those flexibilities, combined with weak oversight and rapid funding expansion, created conditions that were later exploited in the Feeding Our Future fraud scheme.”

In bold, Killian wrote that the Families First Coronavirus Response Act was not “chiefly sponsored” by Omar and “thus is grossly inaccurate to claim so” and ended the email saying that “perhaps” the committee should subpoena President Trump rather than Omar.

While the MEALS Act itself did not pass as a standalone bill, it is listed on Congress.gov as related legislation to the broader Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which became law in 2020 and included similar school meal waiver provisions. Robbins told Fox News Digital the former Omar staffer is “lying” about the impact Omar had, arguing the core purpose of the MEALS Act, expanding USDA waiver authority, was part of the broader legislation.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT MINNESOTA’S ‘FEEDING OUR FUTURE’ FRAUD AT THE CENTER OF TRUMP’S LATEST CRACKDOWN

Video Discrepancies in Ilhan Omar’s finances under the microscope

“I’m talking about the MEALS Act that got incorporated in the larger coronavirus package,” Robbins explained. “In the related bills section it links to the Ilhan bill and lists it as one of the bills included in the Act, the language is identical.”

Congress.gov, the official legislative database run by the Library of Congress, lists Omar’s MEALS Act (H.R. 6187) as “related legislation” to the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (H.R. 6201).

Robbins pointed to numerous examples of Omar taking credit in messages to her constituents back in Minneapolis for the legislation that did ultimately pass and citing her MEALS Act.

In Omar’s own September 2020 press release, she explicitly says she “passed into law this spring” the MEALS Act provisions and describes them as legislation that “directly authorized these school meal waivers.”

“Ilhan’s MEALS Act, a bill aimed at protecting students’ access to school meal benefits during school closures, was passed into law as part of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act,” Omar’s campaign website reads.

Additionally, Omar publicly pushed back after the Trump administration signaled in the summer and fall of 2020, after the legislation passed, that it would begin scaling back or letting some of the waivers expire and return programs closer to their pre-pandemic rules.

In August, she again linked the legislation she sponsored in the House to the overall situation, saying in a letter to the Trump administration, “In March, Congress authorized the use of waivers in the MEALS Act and the COVID-19 Child Nutrition Response Act in order to continue to provide school meals for children during the pandemic.”

“Absolutely not, it did help feed kids,” Omar said in December when asked if she regreted her support for the MEALS Act.

Killian’s email also directly contradicts his own words in a LinkedIn post from a year ago, reviewed by Fox News Digital, in which he characterized the significance of the legislation differently.

“When I worked in Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s office during the pandemic, she wrote and passed the MEALS Act, a vital bill funding schools and feeding all kids,” Killian wrote.

In the same post, Killian described the bill as laying “the groundwork” for broader school meals policy, a contrast to his email to lawmakers in which he argued the legislation “never even passed” and sought to distance it from the framework later used during the pandemic.

Killian’s email to Robbins also included a P.S. with a link to the well-known Schoolhouse Rock “I’m Just a Bill” cartoon that explains to children how bills become law.

“It’s shameful,” Robbins told Fox News Digital about the tone of the email and referred to the situation as Omar’s “henchmen” coming after her.

“We have had no official response from the congresswoman, but they have a former district director, which is the most senior position, and he sent it to me and the Democrat lead on the committee,” Robbins said. “So he’s clearly wanting to have Democrats push back on me and say, ‘Robbins doesn’t know what she’s talking about, this wasn’t really Ilhan’s bill, it never passed,’ which is just BS.”

Notably, Killian’s letter does not address the specific questions the committee asked Omar in a recent letter, which the congresswoman has not responded to, related to the several connections between Omar and individuals in the Somali community charged or implicated in the case.

The committee asked Omar to turn over communications showing how she promoted expanded access to federal child nutrition programs, including emails, texts and meeting records with the Minnesota Department of Education and constituents.

The request also zeroed in on Omar’s public promotion of a Minneapolis restaurant that later became linked to the fraud scandal. Robbins cited a Somali-language TV appearance in which Omar highlighted Safari Restaurant as a meal distribution site and asked for all communications related to the video and the restaurant’s participation.

“She fought to keep the waivers in place during the time that Safari and the other fraudsters were making their money,” Robbins told Fox News Digital.

MINNESOTA’S FRAUD SCANDAL WAS ‘SHOCKINGLY EASY’ TO PULL OFF, IS LIKELY WORSE THAN REPORTED: EX PROSECUTOR

The committee is also seeking records of any contact between Omar and a long list of individuals charged or implicated in the Feeding Our Future case, including nonprofit founder Aimee Bock and dozens of alleged co-conspirators as well as information about political donations Omar received from individuals later charged in the case, requesting “any and all” communications with those donors.

In a response to Fox News Digital, Killian did not directly say whether his original email was coordinated with Rep. Omar or her office, instead describing it as his personal “perspective.” He acknowledged that “very similar language” from the MEALS Act was included in the broader coronavirus relief package that became law.

Killian also argued that responsibility for the fraud lies with those who implemented the program, placing blame on both federal and state officials, particularly Gov. Tim Walz.

MINNESOTA FRAUD COMMITTEE CHAIR CLAIMS WALZ ‘TURNED A BLIND EYE’ TO FRAUD WARNINGS FOR YEARS

“It was then overseen by the Trump USDA. And then governors like Walz. Frankly, Governor Walz…deserves the same level of scrutiny as this Fox inquiry,” Killian wrote. “At the end of the day, it was Governor Walz who [expletive] this up.”

Killian further sought to distance the legislation from the fraud itself, arguing that “no fraud took place at actual public schools” and that “the nonprofits did,” adding that “Ilhan’s bill was focused on the former.”

But the same waiver authority allowed meals to be distributed far beyond school cafeterias, including at non-school sites such as restaurants and community locations later tied to the fraud scheme, raising questions about how separate the two systems were in practice.

Killian also dismissed inconsistencies over whether the MEALS Act “passed” as a matter of “casual” or imprecise language, without directly reconciling his emailed statement that the bill “never even passed” with his prior description of Omar as having “wrote and passed” it.

Omar’s office did not respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

Omar was given a deadline of May 5 to respond to the committee, which she did not meet, and has yet to give any public response.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP

After Omar missed the deadline, the committee attempted to subpoena her for the, information but was blocked by Democrats on the committee in a party-line vote.

“It’s the same story every time,” Robbins posted on X after the vote. “Fraud is committed, information is suppressed, and the dysfunction continues.”

Washington— The Pentagon on Friday began releasing more files related to UFOs and UAPs, following through on an order from President Trump to make public government documents about unexplained phenomena.

The release, posted on a new Pentagon “UFO” website, includes 162 files from the FBI, Department of Defense, NASA and State Department. The documents contain eyewitness testimony, photos and reports of sightings of unexplained objects, detailing incidents dating back decades from around the globe.

“These files, hidden behind classifications, have long fueled justified speculation — and it’s time the American people see it for themselves,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a statement.

The president said the disclosure was aimed at providing “Complete and Maximum Transparency.”

“Whereas previous Administrations have failed to be transparent on this subject, with these new Documents and Videos, the people can decide for themselves, ‘WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?’” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Have Fun and Enjoy!”

    What’s in the UFO files?

The documents include 120 PDFs, 28 videos and 14 images. The photos are mostly images of suspicious objects in the sky filmed by military aircraft:

The Pentagon released this photo of what it called an “Unresolved UAP Report” from U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in 2024 showing a “UAP that resembles a football-shaped body near Japan.” Image released by Pentagon

Six of the photos show objects and phenomena observed by NASA astronauts during the Apollo 12 and Apollo 17 missions, captured in photographs taken from the surface of the Moon:

Apollo 17 astronaut Jack Schmitt reported seeing “a flash on the lunar surface north of Grimaldi (crater).”

The roughly two dozen videos show reported sightings around the world between 2020 and 2026. Most show footage from an infrared camera tracking a white object that appears just as a speck on the screen moving through the air. According to the Pentagon, the report that accompanied a video taken in Greece in 2023 said the object was making multiple “90-degree turns” at approximately 80 miles per hour.

One of the videos shows an object described as resembling a football in the Indo-Pacific and another from Syria shows two semi-transparent, irregularly shaped orange areas that each appear for two seconds.

Another image is an FBI photo overlaid by a graphic of an object described by an eyewitness. The composite sketch shows an “apparent ellipsoid bronze metallic object materializing out of a bright light in the sky, 130-195 feet in length, and disappearing instantaneously.”

The release also includes the FBI’s case file detailing reports of unidentified objects and “flying discs” from 1947 to 1968. Spanning 18 separate documents, the case file includes “high-profile incident accounts, photographic evidence from sites like Oak Ridge, TN, and technical proposals regarding potential propulsion systems. Additional topics include convention programs, researcher accounts, and extensive media coverage from the period.”

The Pentagon said the FBI has previously released portions of the case file, known as 62-HQ-83894, but Friday’s version includes fewer redactions and “several newly declassified pages.”

The bulk of the PDF files feature modern incident reports from military service members detailing their encounters with strange objects or unexplained phenomena in Iraq, Syria, the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Aden, Greece and elsewhere. One pilot described seeing a “triangular and metallic UAP” flying at 25,000 ft. over the Mediterranean.

Other documents detail historical encounters, including the famous crash in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. One section of the FBI case file includes a memo written by an agent in the bureau’s Dallas field office to FBI headquarters. The agent reports that a major in the Air Force called to tell the office “that an object purporting to be a flying disc was recovered near Roswell, New Mexico.”

“The disc is hexagonal in shape and was suspended from a ball[o]on by cable, which ball[o]on was approximately twenty feet in diameter,” the memo said.

A more recent document detailed the experience of several federal law enforcement agents in an undisclosed location in the western U.S. in 2023. The file, prepared by the Pentagon, reported that teams of agents had seen various orbs and strange figures in the sky or just off the ground.

One incident involved an orb that the agents described as “similar to the Eye [of] Sauron from Lord of the Rings, except without the pupil, or maybe an orange Storm Electrify bowling ball.”

A report from the Pentagon on federal employees reporting seeing an orb resembling the “Eye of Sauron” in 2023. Pentagon

Another incident involved agents seeing “orange ‘orbs’ in the sky” that emitted “smaller red ‘orbs’ in groups of two to four.”

“These events were witnessed by multiple teams from varying locations and vantage points over a two-day period,” the file said. “Due to the sequential nature of the events, it is not known whether there was a single orange ‘mother’ orb that released the groups of red orbs or whether there were multiple orange orbs at play.”

The Pentagon said the materials released Friday detail “unresolved cases, meaning the government is unable to make a definitive determination on the nature of the observed phenomena.” The department welcomed analysis from the private sector.

Out of the 162 files released Friday, 108 contain redactions. The Pentagon said information was withheld to “protect the identity of eyewitnesses, the location of government facilities, or potentially sensitive information about military sites not related to UAP.”

“No redactions have been made to any files released under President Trump’s directive concerning information about the nature or existence of any encounter reported as a UAP or related phenomena,” the statement said.

    More releases coming

The Pentagon’s UFO site said new documents will be released on a rolling basis “as they are discovered and declassified, with tranches posted every few weeks.”

In February, Mr. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, directed the Pentagon and other agency heads to release files on UFOs and any “alien and extraterrestrial life.”

He asked them “to begin the process of identifying and releasing” any relevant files and called for the release of “any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters.”

The Pentagon has tracked reports of what it calls unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs, for decades. But the military said in a 2024 report there’s no evidence that any government investigation into UAPs has confirmed the existence of extraterrestrial life. Mr. Trump has said he’s not sure whether or not aliens exist.

The Pentagon started releasing images several years ago after it established a website for its All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, which was tasked with analyzing reports of unidentified anomalous phenomena. The AARO website was established in 2023.
