    • Summary
    • Democrats want DHS funding separated and delayed after ICE shootings
    • Republicans instead move forward with full funding package
    • Collins warns of “dangerous and detrimental” shutdown

WASHINGTON, Jan 26 (Reuters) – The federal government appeared headed for a partial government shutdown this week, with Republicans and Democrats at odds over funding for President Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security after the fatal shooting of a second U.S. citizen by federal immigration officers in Minnesota.

Senate Democrats said they would not provide the votes needed to pass a $64.4 billion DHS bill and called on Republicans to strip the legislation from a larger package that would also fund programs in five other areas through September 30, including defense, health, transportation, education and housing. Current funding for those programs expires after midnight on Friday.

Senate Republicans, who control the chamber by a 53-47 seat majority, showed no sign of heeding Democrats, while the White House called on lawmakers to pass the full package to avoid the shuttering of federal agencies barely three months after the longest shutdown in U.S. history ended in November.

“Senate Democrats have made clear we are ready to quickly advance the five appropriations bills separately from the DHS funding bill,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement. “If not, Republicans will again be responsible for another government shutdown.”

On Monday, Republicans put the full funding package on the legislative calendar for consideration later in the week, as the two sides sought to reach agreement behind closed doors.

“The White House supports the bipartisan work that was done to advance the bipartisan appropriations package, and we want to see that passed,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters. “We absolutely do not want to see that funding lapse.”

A Senate Democratic leadership aide said later that Republicans and the White House had reached out but did not raise any “realistic solutions.”

The funding package, which passed the Republican-controlled House of Representatives last week, had appeared to be on track for passage in the Senate until Saturday, when federal immigration agents in Minneapolis shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti. Pretti is the second U.S. citizen to be fatally shot by federal immigration officers this month in Minneapolis, where Trump, a Republican, has deployed thousands of armed, masked agents for a deportation effort.

Senate Democrats, including moderates who broke party ranks to end the shutdown last year, said they could not support further funding for DHS without reforms to better safeguard Americans.

“I will vote against DHS’s funding until additional reforms are in place,” said Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who also called for an independent investigation. “The Senate … needs to have a real bipartisan discussion about what additional reforms we need to put in place to prevent tragedies like Minneapolis from happening across the country.”

Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat who sometimes votes with Republicans, also called for stripping the DHS bill from the larger funding package. “It is unlikely that will happen and our country will suffer another shutdown,” the Pennsylvania Democrat said in a statement.

Senator Susan Collins, Republican chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said more than 80% of the DHS bill’s funding was intended for non-immigration programs including emergency disaster relief, air traffic safety, cybersecurity and the U.S. Coast Guard.

In a memo to federal judges nationwide, Judge Robert Conrad, head of the judiciary’s Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, said the courts only have enough cash on hand from fees and other balances to fully sustain paid operations through February 4 if legislation funding the judicial branch does not pass the Senate before then.

“I hope we can come together in a constructive way to get this done and to ensure that we do not lurch into a dangerous and detrimental government shutdown,” Collins, a Maine Republican, said on the Senate floor.

    WASHINGTON, Jan 26 (Reuters) –

Republicans face election risks in clash with gun rights groups over protester’s killing

    • Summary
    • Trump officials at odds with gun rights groups
    • Groups say Pretti had right to carry weapon
    • Risks loom for Republicans in midterm elections

WASHINGTON, Jan 26 (Reuters) – Trump administration officials’ suggestion that Alex Pretti should not have brought a legally carried handgun to a Minneapolis protest has opened a rare rift with gun rights groups, creating election-year risks for Republicans with one of their most loyal voting blocs.

Several of President Donald Trump’s officials drew swift pushback from gun rights groups for their stance after Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, was shot dead by federal agents on Saturday.

The Reuters Inside Track newsletter is your essential guide to the biggest events in global sport. Sign up here.

Pretti had a license to carry a concealed weapon, and the Minneapolis police chief said he has seen no evidence that Pretti brandished the weapon before he was shot multiple times.

In defense of the agents, Trump, FBI Director Kash Patel, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Gregory Bovino, a senior Border Patrol official, all said Pretti should not have been carrying a gun.

“You cannot bring a firearm, loaded, with multiple magazines, to any sort of protest that you want. It’s that simple,” Patel said on Fox News on Sunday.

Gun rights groups, including the politically influential National Rifle Association, however, countered that Pretti had simply been exercising his right to carry a firearm in public.

They argued that the administration’s suggestion that his right to carry a gun depends on the setting – and does not extend to protests – runs against a bedrock principle of conservative politics: the right to keep and bear arms.

The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus called Patel’s comments “completely incorrect on Minnesota law.”

    ANOTHER ISSUE FOR DISGRUNTLED VOTERS

Bryan Strawser, the group’s chairman and a Republican, told Reuters the administration was backtracking on the Second Amendment – the constitutional right to keep and bear arms – and that could hurt his party going into the November midterm elections that will decide control of Congress.

Voters are already disgruntled over the cost of living and high healthcare costs, and a rising number, including some Republicans, are growing increasingly unhappy with the aggressive tactics being used in Trump’s sweeping immigration crackdown.

“It’s unbelievably stupid that they’ve chosen to alienate the gun lobby. The NRA and the gun lobby have basically been a bedrock constituency of the Republican Party for 50 years,” said Jacob Perry, a Republican strategist based in Florida.

Gun rights groups are major donors to Republican political campaigns, are effective in turning out supporters, and their members are reliable voters.

Asked by a reporter on Monday if Trump believes Americans have a right to carry a gun while protesting, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared to suggest that right did not extend to events involving armed law enforcement.

“Any gun owner knows that when you are carrying a weapon, when you are bearing arms, and you are confronted by law enforcement, you are raising the assumption of risk and the risk of force being used against you, and that’s unfortunately what took place on Saturday,” Leavitt said.

The NRA on social media on Monday referred to Leavitt’s comments, saying that while law-abiding Americans had a constitutional right to carry guns, they did not have a right to “impede lawful immigration enforcement operations.”

GUN RIGHTS ROOTED IN US ORIGIN STORY

Verified videos reviewed by Reuters show Pretti holding a phone, not a gun, as he filmed federal agents pushing protesters to the ground.

After stepping between an agent and two women, Pretti was pepper-sprayed, subdued, and pinned to the ground. Footage then appears to show an agent removing a handgun from Pretti’s waistband. Moments later, an officer shot Pretti four times in the back, with additional shots fired by other agents.

While avoiding direct criticism of Trump, Gun Owners of America and the NRA instead targeted comments by Bill Essayli, a Trump‑appointed federal prosecutor in Los Angeles, who wrote on social media that “if you approach law enforcement with a gun, there is a high likelihood they will be legally justified in shooting you.”

The NRA called his remarks “dangerous and wrong.” The lobbying organization, which has been closely aligned with Trump, did not respond to a request for comment.

Luis Valdes, a GOA spokesman, said, “Our stance is very simple. We will defend the Second Amendment, no ifs, ands or buts.”

Guns and gun rights are wrapped up in the American origin story, rooted in a frontier mentality, a resistance to tyranny, and independence. Yet it wasn’t until the 1960s and 1970s that gun rights became a hot-button political cultural issue.

Political assassinations in 1968, including those of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and U.S. Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, led to the 1968 Gun Control Act, which banned gun sales to certain groups, including felons and drug users, and required the federal licensing of gun dealers.

It triggered a backlash among conservatives, who saw the law as government overreach. In 1977, NRA leadership changed from mostly gun club members to hardline political activists, bringing about the birth of the modern gun-rights movement.

Jeanette Hoffman, a Republican consultant, said gun owners are a reliable Republican bloc and take seriously their Second Amendment rights.

“This could have ramifications in the midterms if Second Amendment groups feel their constitutional rights are under attack by the Trump administration,” she said.

Conservatives have often brought weapons to protests. Among them was Kyle Rittenhouse, who was acquitted on charges of killing two people and wounding another during a 2020 protest in Wisconsin. He was lauded by conservatives and later met with Trump.

“Carry everywhere. It is your right,” Rittenhouse posted on X on Monday.

Canadian ex-Olympic snowboarder pleads not guilty to US drug charges

    January 27, 2026 6:29 AM UTC / Reuters

SANTA ANA, California, Jan 26 (Reuters) – Ryan Wedding, a Canadian former Olympic snowboarder accused of turning to a life of crime as a murderous cocaine-trafficking kingpin, pleaded not guilty on Monday to all 17 felony charges against him in two U.S. grand jury indictments.

Wedding, 44, entered his plea during an arraignment in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, California, several days after he was arrested in Mexico City and flown to the United States in FBI custody, following years on the run.

U.S. Magistrate Judge John Early ordered Wedding to remain held in federal custody without bond pending further proceedings. A status conference in the case was set for February 11, with a preliminary trial date set for March 24.

Wedding is accused of leading a transnational drug trafficking network in conjunction with Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel to transport hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Colombia through Mexico to the United States and Canada.

He was on the FBI’s “Top 10 Most Wanted” list, with the U.S. government having offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction.

Shortly after Wedding’s arrest, FBI Director Kash Patel described the former athlete as “the largest narco-trafficker in modern times,” comparing him with such notorious drug lords as Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and Pablo Escobar.

Wedding, who competed for Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, was charged with 17 counts of various felonies, including conspiracy to distribute cocaine, conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to tamper with a witness.

Prosecutors have accused him of ordering several drug-related killings, including that of a U.S. government witness slain in Colombia in January 2025 before he could testify against Wedding, the U.S. Justice Department said.

If convicted of the most serious charges against him, Wedding could face a sentence of life in prison.

President Donald Trump said Iran appears to be looking to negotiate with the U.S. amid a growing military buildup in the Middle East.

In a Monday interview with Axios, Trump suggested that Tehran had reached out on “numerous occasions” and “want[s] to [make a deal.”

“They want to make a deal. I know so. They called on numerous occasions. They want to talk,” the president told the outlet.

According to U.S. officials, also cited by Axios, any potential agreement would need Tehran to remove all enriched uranium, cap its long-range missile stockpile, a change in support for regional proxy forces, and cease independent uranium enrichment, terms Iranian leaders have not agreed to.

Trump also described the situation with Iran as “in flux,” and pointed to the arrival of what he called “[a big armada next to Iran]. Bigger than Venezuela,” referencing the recent deployment of U.S. naval assets.

As previously reported by Fox News Digital, the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier entered CENTCOM waters in the Indian Ocean on Monday amid increasing threats from Iran, a senior U.S. official said.

Trump had told reporters Jan. 21, “We have a big flotilla going in that direction, and we’ll see what happens. We have a [big force going towards Iran]. I’d rather not see anything happen, but we’re watching them very closely.”

The U.S. military buildup comes amid widespread unrest inside Iran following protests that began Dec. 28.

该公司以支持OpenAI、DoorDash(DASH.N)等公司而闻名。

Jan 26 (Reuters) – Heated political rhetoric over the fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen by immigration agents in Minneapolis on Saturday spilled into Silicon Valley as partners at an influential venture firm distanced themselves from a colleague who defended the killing.

The death of 37-year-old Alex Pretti was one of five shootings this month involving federal agents conducting immigration enforcement, including the fatal shooting of Minnesota woman Renee Good. At least six immigrants have died this month in federal immigration detention, an unusually rapid pace.

The Pretti shooting has drawn anger across the U.S. political spectrum as the administration of Republican President Donald Trump backed the agents even as video evidence contradicted its version of events.

The back-and-forth on social media highlights an ongoing political fracture at the heart of the U.S. tech industry where some executives have abandoned the sector’s longstanding reputation for progressive social values to publicly back Trump’s policies.

    FRACTURE IN SILICON VALLEY

Billionaire Elon Musk has led the charge to the politically conservative right, with hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign donations to Trump’s 2024 campaign and support for his anti-immigration moves. This has led to public clashes with the likes of LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, a major Democratic donor.

Musk has not commented on the Pretti shooting, while Hoffman echoed Khosla’s message that humanity should transcend politics.

Wary of government retaliation, tech executives have spent the past year largely silent on policies impacting their businesses including the chaos surrounding the H-1B visa program and U.S tariffs.

Executives have instead sought to improve ties with Trump, contributing millions to his inauguration a year ago and backing his manufacturing push with tens of billions in pledged spending, which some analysts have called empty posturing.

Urging tech CEOs to break their silence, more than 450 employees from firms such as Google, Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab, Salesforce (CRM.N), opens new tab and OpenAI signed a letter on Saturday, opens new tab urging their top executives to pressure the White House to withdraw ICE from U.S. cities, cancel all contracts with ICE and to speak out publicly against ICE’s violence.

“The wanton brutality … has removed any credibility that these actions are about immigration enforcement. Their goal is terror, cruelty, and suppression of dissent,” they said in the letter.

The workers noted that Trump had said he refrained from deploying federal agents to San Francisco after Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab CEO Jensen Huang and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff advised against the action.
