Husband of Nicole Amor, U.S. soldier killed in Kuwait, on what her service meant: “She was the rock for a lot of people”

    March 25, 2026 / 10:40 AM EDT / CBS News

Joey Amor says his wife, Army Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor, was “the rock” and “the glue” for those around her — a role he says defined her life and service before she was killed earlier this month during the war with Iran.

“In a moment of chaos or darkness or concern or fear or uncertainty, she anchored them,” he told CBS News in an exclusive interview, adding the soldiers who served alongside Nicole “all say the same thing” about her.

Nicole, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, was one of six Army Reserve soldiers killed in an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait on March 1, the day after the U.S. and Israel launched a massive military operation in Iran. They were assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command based in Des Moines, Iowa.

Joey Amor said he became concerned when he saw news reports of an explosion that had struck a sustainment unit in Kuwait.

“When I heard it was a sustainment unit based out of Kuwait, I know enough about what’s going on over there to know there were very few left over there, I knew it was her unit,” Joey Amor said.

He said he shared his concern in his final messages to her.

“I sent her a text and I said, ‘I’m getting worried. I’m getting worried. We’re getting reports of a sustainment unit, three casualties, five injured, I’m gonna need to hear something from you today, my love.’”

About an hour and a half later, he learned she had been killed. She was just days from returning home.

“And I don’t know how to explain that to you, I don’t know how to explain knowing before you know, and then to be told what you already know, after not being able to see your person for that long,” Joey Amor said. “I can’t put that into words. That was painful.”

Nicole was buried in Minnesota last weekend, an ending Joey Amor never expected when she left for her second tour last July. When they said goodbye, his wife had said, “I’ll see you soon,” he recalled.

Asked how he explains Nicole’s death to their children, Joey Amor said he’s “been very honest with them and transparent with them.”

“You can only protect them from the truth for so long,” he continued. “And the reality is, is that there is no protecting them from the truth that their mother is gone. And so you have to handle each one differently. My daughter’s one way, my son’s a different.”

The couple had been part of each other’s lives for more than 20 years. They met while serving at Fort Eustis in Virginia and married in 2015.

When Joey Amor left the military in 2012, Nicole insisted on staying. Her service “grew into a sense of duty and a sense of responsibility, a sense of pride,” he said. It also meant “taking care of the one next to her.”

Now, Joey Amor and their children are also part of the Gold Star families, the immediate family members of service members who have died in the line of duty serving the United States.

“It is a community of people that have felt what we are feeling right now, and that are still feeling this every day,” he said. “And it’s a group of families that you respect and that we all honor as the nation, but we never truly understand the weight unless you’re a part of it.”

Joey Amor keeps replaying the last moments he shared with Nicole, as well as the final moments their two children had with their mother.

“And they were so comfortable because we thought she was safe,” he said.

As painful as it is to look back, it also hurts to look forward. But Joey Amor and their two children hope to grow an unconventional memorial: a special greenhouse in Nicole’s honor.

“It was a calming place for her,” Joey Amor said of Nicole’s love of gardening, adding: “She loved watching what it turned into…and it always took on a life of its own.”

Operation Nikki’s Embrace is raising funds for “gardens, greenhouses, community spaces, and acts of service,” according to its website, and a greenhouse will be built in Nicole’s honor.

“At the core of it is this little greenhouse that I will get to spend the rest of my life maintaining and growing,” Joey Amor said. “And I can’t be more thankful for that. It’s going to be an honor, it’s going to be a joy, it’s going to be wonderful.”

Savannah Guthrie gives first interview since mom Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance: “It is unbearable”

    March 25, 2026 / 10:40 AM EDT / CBS News

“Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie said her family is in agony as she made a tearful plea for someone “to do the right thing” nearly two months after her mother Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Arizona home.

Savannah Guthrie is speaking out about the ordeal in her first interview, which will be airing on “Today” on Thursday and Friday.

“We are in agony. We are in agony,” an emotional Guthrie told her former co-host Hoda Kotb in a clip released Wednesday. “It is unbearable, and to think of what she went through, I wake up every night in the middle of the night, every night, and in the darkness, I imagine her terror, and it is unthinkable, but those thoughts demand to be thought.”

Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie, 84, was taken from her Tucson, Arizona, home after she was last seen on the night of Jan. 31. No suspects or persons of interest have been named in the case, but authorities have released doorbell camera images of a man wearing a mask and gloves at her door that night.

The Guthrie family is offering a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery. The FBI is also offering a separate reward of $100,000.

“Someone needs to do the right thing,” Savannah Guthrie said in Wednesday’s clip. She also said, “I will not hide my face, but she needs to come home now.”

The Guthrie family said in a statement Sunday that they believe that people in southern Arizona “hold the key to finding resolution in this case” and urged residents to review camera footage, journal notes and text messages.

“We hope people search their memories, especially around the key timelines of January 31 and the early morning hours of February 1, as well as the late evening of January 11,” the family said. “We desperately ask this community for renewed attention to our mom’s case.”

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the disappearance along with the FBI, said earlier this month that various forms of evidence were being analyzed in the case. Authorities have also turned to the investigative technique of genetic genealogy to try to make the most of DNA evidence that’s been collected.

The sheriff’s department also warned people Tuesday about fundraising scams stemming from the high-profile case. The department said no GoFundMe page or any fundraising effort is associated with the investigation.

“The public is urged to remain vigilant and not send money to anyone claiming to raise funds related to this case,” the department said on social media.

学术标准下降,招生偏向种族而非 merit(应译为‘成绩’或‘能力’,此处保留原意),学生毕业时背负巨额债务却找不到工作。

Trump 2.0’s Education Department unleashes top 5 most striking ‘wins’ against gender, DEI extremism

‘Just over a year ago, we saw men claiming victories in women’s athletics,’ Trump admin says

[Watchdog group exposes Idaho colleges’ alleged scheme to sidestep new DEI law]

As the Goldwater Institute demands that Idaho’s attorney general launch an investigation into a new anti-DEI law, an attorney for the group exposed how four universities in the state have allegedly schemed to sidestep the law’s provisions.

A little over a year after Donald Trump took office for the second time and began going after what he described as “discriminatory” diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices, including gender extremism and racial preferences in education, his administration is touting several “wins” it says are shifting the culture war on college campuses and beyond.

More than 300 colleges and universities have rooted out DEI, according to numbers in a Department of Education press release laying out various “wins” against DEI during President Trump’s second term. Other numbers the administration shared showed 45 colleges and universities have also removed DEI statements and messaging from university programs or websites, at least 15 have eliminated the use of diversity statements in hiring faculty or staff, at least 95 have either eliminated, renamed or shifted staff or faculty positions related to DEI, at least 175 have removed or restructured their current DEI offices, and over a half-dozen recently abandoned racially segregated graduation ceremonies.

Furthermore, College Board, best known for administering standardized tests like the SAT, revised criteria for their National Recognition Program, which the Department of Education says favored racial groups and awarded scholarships disproportionately to students from underrepresented ethnic groups.

Here are five more striking DEI “wins” the Trump administration has had since the beginning of the president’s second term:

    1. UPenn agreed to apologize, restore women’s records and bar males from women’s sports and intimate facilities

After finding UPenn violated Title IX, the department announced in early July that it had got the school to sign a resolution agreement requiring UPenn to restore individual women’s swimming records and titles, issue a public compliance statement, adopt biology-based definitions of “male” and “female” and send personalized apology letters to affected female swimmers. The move stripped transgender swimmer Leah Thomas of her 2022 national title, according to UPenn’s records.

“From day one, President Trump and Secretary McMahon vowed to protect women and girls, and today’s agreement with UPenn is a historic display of that promise being fulfilled. This administration does not just pay lip service to women’s equality: it vigorously insists on that equality being upheld,” said Riley Gaines, the former University of Kentucky swimmer who competed against Thomas. “It is my hope that today demonstrates to educational institutions that they will no longer be allowed to trample upon women’s civil rights, and renews hope in every female athlete that their country’s highest leadership will not relent until they have the dignity, safety, and fairness they deserve.”

    2. Education Department found California violated federal law by helping schools hide students’ gender transitions from parents

Earlier this year, the Education Department Student Privacy Policy Office found the California Department of Education to be in “continued violation” of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law granting parents access to their child’s school records.

The announcement was followed by the U.S. Supreme Court intervening in a case this month, when they sided with parents who were challenging California law that allowed staff to hide students’ gender transitions from their parents.

“Gender dysphoria is a condition that has an important bearing on a child’s mental health, but when a child exhibits symptoms of gender dysphoria at school, California’s policies conceal that information from parents and facilitate a degree of gender transitioning during school hours,” the court’s decision read. “These policies likely violate parents’ rights to direct the upbringing and education of their children.”

Meanwhile, at least 20 university-affiliated hospitals have ended or suspended puberty blockers, hormone therapies, gender transition surgeries or other transgender care for minors, according to the Education Department.

    3. Trump admin found Colorado school district to have violated Title IX for allowing males in girls’ bathrooms, locker rooms, overnight accommodations and sports

Trump’s Education Department entered into another resolution agreement with the Jefferson County Public Schools District in Colorado after it found that the district was allowing transgender students access to female bathrooms, locker rooms, overnight accommodations and to compete in female sports.

According to the department, the district committed to rescinding or revising any policies that allowed male students to use female intimate facilities, share overnight accommodations with them or compete in female sports. The district must also issue and prominently post a public statement committing to Title IX compliance using biology-based definitions of “male” and “female,” stating Title IX applies regardless of state law or sports governing-body rules, and explaining how students can report or file sex-discrimination complaints.

    4. Education Department secures 31 agreements with colleges and universities to end partnership with nonprofit recruiting pipeline that Trump said provided racial advantages

Trump’s Department of Education secured 31 resolution agreements with universities and colleges who were partnering with The Ph.D. Project, an organization that helps hopeful doctoral students get into programs. The department’s Office of Civil Rights found the program “unlawfully limits eligibility based on the race of participants.”

“After initiating investigations several months ago into forty-five institutions of higher education for collaborating with the Ph.D. Project, OCR later determined that these institutions violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI) by partnering with an organization that discriminates on the basis of race,” a February press release from the department states.

    5. NCAA updates transgender athletic participation policy to keep men out of women’s sports

In Feb. 2025, the NCAA revised its transgender participation rules to restrict the women’s category to student-athletes assigned female at birth, barring athletes assigned male at birth from competing on women’s teams, though they are still allowed to practice with women’s teams and receive related benefits. The men’s category remains open to all eligible athletes, and the change took effect immediately on Feb. 6, 2025.

“Just over a year ago, we saw men claiming victories in women’s athletics. Colleges and universities were focused more on diversity, equity, and inclusion than ensuring graduates were prepared for success in life after graduation,” a Trump administration fact sheet on “wins” during the president’s second term stated.

“Institutions required DEI statements from faculty and held segregated affinity graduation ceremonies for students. Academic standards fell, admissions were skewed to favor race over merit, and students graduated with a massive pile of debt and degrees that led to no job prospects,” the sheet continues. “Today, institutions of higher education are changing the game because President Trump is bringing back America’s Golden Age — shifting the culture and restoring our nation’s institutions to greatness.”

[CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP]

In the fact-sheet, the Trump administration also touted an end to “test-optional admissions” at “dozens” of colleges and universities, including several Ivy League campuses and others that it says are reinstating SAT and ACT admissions requirements.

Majid Saeedi/Getty 提供

Some Iranians who hoped war would bring positive change tell CBS News they now feel “doomed”

    March 25, 2026 / 11:33 AM EDT / CBS News

Before the U.S. and Israel launched their joint attacks on Iran 25 days ago, many Iranians said they would welcome foreign intervention if it meant the end of the Islamic Republic. The regime, in power for 47 years, had just crushed a huge wave of anti-government demonstrations, with President Trump claiming more than 30,000 were killed and vowing to come to the rescue of the protesters.

Now, two Iranians — one inside and one outside the country — tell CBS News the feeling of optimism has shifted markedly after more than three weeks of war.

“If we had a world situation where Europe and the rest of the world was more orchestrated and together, collectively, with a plan that combined a number of things, both force and diplomacy and sanctions and discussions, all kinds of things — long-term plan — then that could have worked with this regime,” said Reza, a British-Iranian whose name CBS News has changed to protect his identity. “But to just have one or two countries, you know, unilaterally going in without a proper plan? It’s never gonna work. So that’s why I think people are waking up to that rude awakening, realization, that they’re doomed, basically.”

Reza, who is in the U.K., said he’s spoken with many other Iranians in the diaspora who feel the same.

Iran is “really playing the upper hand on Trump, in that they realize he doesn’t have a strategy. So they’re really using that to their advantage to gain more strength and more forward planning with the Strait of Hormuz, and suffocating the world, because they know that’s where the weakness of the whole entire world is, basically,” Reza said.

Inside Iran, Amir — whose name has also been changed to protect his identity — echoed the sentiment.

“Many people that were pro-war, and they supposed war could be liberator, liberate them from the despotism in Iran and theocratic despotic regimes, now they are thinking twice and revising, and they are reaching for any moment ceasefire, no matter who is the boss. No matter who is the king,” Amir said. “Anything that can say ‘okay, enough is enough and there is a ceasefire until further notice.’”

Civilians look at the remains of residential and commercial buildings, March 21, 2026, in the Shahrak-e Gharb neighborhood of Tehran, Iran. The building was hit days earlier amid U.S. and Israeli attacks, resulting in several civilian deaths and missing persons, Iranian officials said. Majid Saeedi/Getty

Amir said he was anticipating “hellish weeks to come,” with both the Iranian regime and the Trump administration falling back, in his view, on “brinkmanship.”

Meanwhile, opposition groups in Iran “do not have [a] viable and functional coalition to move even a finger,” Amir said, casting doubt on calls by the Trump administration and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for Iranians to take advantage of the ongoing strikes to rise up and topple the regime from within.

In Amir’s view, it appears that Mr. Trump “cannot find an exit door from the mess.”

索赔人可起诉要求 wrongful death( wrongful death 应译为“ wrongful death”,此处保留原词更准确)。

NEW YORK, March 25 (Reuters) – Investigators are probing the potential causes of Sunday’s collision between an Air Canada Express (AC.TO), opens new tab plane and a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport in New York. WHAT HAPPENED

According to a recording of air traffic controller communications from LiveATC.net, a controller ‌who authorized Air Canada flight 8646 to land had been trying to find a gate for a United Airlines (UAL.O), opens new tab flight whose crew reported a bad odor that sickened flight attendants.

The same controller appeared to have cleared the fire truck to cross the runway where the Air Canada flight, operated by Jazz Aviation, was landing.

“Stop, truck one, stop,” the controller said shortly after approving passage.

In a separate recording, an unidentified controller who appeared to be the one involved in the crash seemed to blame himself for the accident, saying he had been dealing with an emergency earlier. “I messed up,” he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board has begun an investigation. An NTSB official said the fire truck lacked a transponder, unlike similar vehicles at other U.S. airports, making it harder for LaGuardia’s warning systems to track the truck’s movement.

CAN THE GOVERNMENT BE SUED FOR THE CRASH?

The Federal Employees Liability Reform and Tort Compensation Act of 1988, often known as the Westfall Act, gives federal employees immunity for common law torts, or private wrongs, they commit in the scope of their employment. Negligence is one such private wrong.

Though the federal government enjoys sovereign immunity from many lawsuits, it can through the Federal Aviation Administration be held responsible for air traffic controllers’ negligence through the Federal Tort Claims Act.

The FTCA provides a limited waiver for “personal injury or death caused by the negligent or wrongful act or omission” of federal employees acting within the scope of their employment.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates LaGuardia Airport, and two of its officers were in the fire truck. It can be sued under laws of both states.

WHAT’S THE PATH TO A LAWSUIT?

Claimants have two years after an incident to file administr, opens new tabative claims, opens new tab with the FAA that set forth the nature of their injuries, the basis for their claims and the dollar amounts they seek.

The FAA has six months to accept or deny claims. If the FAA denies a claim, the claimant has six months from the date of denial to file a lawsuit. If the FAA fails to accept or deny a claim within six months, a claimant may treat that failure as a denial and file a lawsuit.

Claimants have less time to pursue claims against the Port Authority. They have 90 days after an incident to file claims, and must wait at least 60 additional days before filing lawsuits. They must file lawsuits within one ‌year after incidents occur.

    POSSIBLE CLAIMS AND DEFENSES

Claimants can sue for wrongful death. They can also sue for economic injuries such as medical bills, lost wages and a loss of earning power, as well as non-economic injuries such as emotional distress and the loss of companionship.

At this early stage, such claims stemming from the LaGuardia accident appear “exceptionally strong,” according to a lawyer who has represented claimants in similar litigation. Another lawyer said that when a plane receives clearance to land, “you have a reasonable expectation that the runway is yours.”

Legal experts said the FAA could argue that its controllers followed their operations manual, or that staffing and employment actions were discretionary.

Hypothetically, if the FAA determined that to ensure people’s safety it needed five controllers to operate a tower, it could defend against accusations it should have employed six, but lacked discretion to operate a tower with only four.

The FAA has long been short of air traffic controllers, though U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told reporters that LaGuardia was well-staffed with 33, compared with a target of 37.

    OTHER CASES

The FAA was sued for $6.55 million in 2019 by the family of John Brown, a pilot killed in a 2016 crash near Reno-Tahoe International Airport after his small plane flew into turbulence from a Boeing 757.

A judge initially found the pilot at fault, but the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in 2024 that an air traffic controller did not act reasonably in failing to instruct Brown to maintain “visual separation” from the jet and receive confirmation he was doing so.

“We are not mandating strict adherence to the [Air Traffic Controller] Manual nor requiring ‘magic words’ from air traffic controllers,” but the burden on this controller was “minimal,” the court said. Brown’s family and the FAA settled last year. The government did not admit liability in agreeing to settle.

In separate litigation, at least 34 lawsuits have been filed over the deaths of 67 people in January 2025 when American Airlines (AAL.O), opens new tab flight 5342, operated by PSA Airlines as American Eagle, collided with an Army helicopter over the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.

Claimants say the government should be liable for negligence by the controllers and the Army flight crew. In a December court filing, the government called the Army pilots’ “failure to maintain vigilance” to see and avoid the American Eagle plane a “proximate cause” of the accident, but denied that controller negligence was also a proximate cause.

Last month, the NTSB said “degraded controller performance and situation awareness” stemming from a high workload contributed to the accident.
