US probes Reid Hoffman group over funding lawsuits against Trump, source says

WASHINGTON, May 28 (Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department has opened an investigation into a group tied to billionaire Reid Hoffman over its partial funding of writer E. Jean Carroll’s lawsuits against President Donald Trump, a person familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

The investigation, being run out of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago, ​is focused on potential money laundering and obstruction associated with the group, American Future Republic, according to the source, who ​spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

The group covered some of Carroll’s legal ⁠bills in successful lawsuits accusing Trump of sexual abuse and defamation.

The source had told Reuters on Wednesday that the investigation was examining ​whether Carroll had committed perjury regarding the funding of her suit in a 2022 deposition. But the person said on Thursday that ​while the probe is examining that funding, Carroll is not a focus of the investigation.

TRUMP’S DOJ PURSUES PRESIDENT’S ANTAGONISTS

It was not immediately clear what evidence prosecutors had against the group. Funding of lawsuits by outside groups is common in the U.S. and not generally considered illegal.

A spokesperson for U.S. Attorney Andrew ​Boutros in Chicago did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the probe is examining Hoffman’s group. Earlier on ​Thursday, the office said in a statement that it had not opened a criminal investigation of Carroll.

American Future Republic could not immediately be reached for ‌comment. A ⁠spokesperson for Hoffman’s venture capital firm, Greylock Partners, did not immediately respond after regular business hours. Hoffman, a prominent donor to the Democratic Party, is a co-founder of LinkedIn.

Since last year, Trump’s Justice Department has pursued a slew of investigations against the president’s antagonists and has brought criminal charges in some cases.

Carroll brought two successful lawsuits, decided in 2023 and 2024, alleging Trump sexually abused her in a ​New York department store in the ​1990s and later defamed her by ⁠saying she was lying about the matter.

An appeals court in 2024 addressed the issue of potential perjury by the writer, deciding that “Ms. Carroll plausibly represented that she had forgotten about the limited outside ​funding counsel obtained in September 2020 when this question was first posed to her in 2022, ​and the additional ⁠discovery did not indicate otherwise.”

A jury found in May 2023 that Trump had sexually assaulted Carroll and defamed her but did not rape her under the New York definition of the crime. Another jury in January 2024 found that he had defamed her, ordering him to pay $83.3 ⁠million in ​damages.

Trump has denied all wrongdoing and is still in legal battles with Carroll.

Acting Attorney ​General Todd Blanche, who has moved quickly to carry out Trump’s demands since taking over from his predecessor, Pam Bondi, has been recused from the department’s investigation ​as he worked as one of Trump’s personal attorneys on the Carroll appeals, the source said.

Taylor Swift concert attack plot suspect sentenced to 15 years after being found guilty in Austrian court

An Austrian court on Thursday convicted a man of planning to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna nearly two years ago. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The state court in Wiener Neustadt found the 21-year-old defendant, an Austrian citizen known only as Beran A., in line with Austrian privacy rules, guilty on charges including those related to the concert, the Austria Press Agency reported.

His defense attorney said he admitted to the charges related to the concert plot during the opening day of the trial last month.

The concert plot was thwarted, but Austrian authorities still canceled Swift’s three performances in August 2024.

In short final words to the court before it adjourned to consider a verdict on Thursday, Beran A. said: “I would just like to say that I am sorry.”

Beran A. allegedly planned to target people outside the Ernst Happel Stadium with knives or homemade explosives. Tens of thousands of Taylor Swift fans, known as Swifties, had traveled to Austria to attend the performances of the American singer’s record-setting Eras Tour. Devastated by the cancellations, many gathered in central Vienna to trade friendship bracelets and commiserate.

Beran A. also allegedly networked with members of the Islamic State group ahead of the planned attack. Prosecutors have said they discussed purchasing weapons and making bombs, and that the defendant also sought to illegally buy weapons in the days ahead of the performance, as well as swearing allegiance to the militant group.

Authorities searched his apartment on Aug. 7, 2024, and found bomb-making materials. The concerts were scheduled to begin the next day.

“Having our Vienna shows canceled was devastating,” Swift wrote in a statement posted to Instagram two weeks later. “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.”

He was tried alongside Arda K., another 21-year-old whose full name also has not been made public. They, along with a third man, Hasan E., who was arrested and remains in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia, allegedly planned to carry out simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan 2024 in the name of IS.

Only Beran A. was charged in connection with the concert plot. The two defendants were found guilty of charges including traveling and training for terrorist purposes, and being part of a terrorist organization, APA reported.

The court also found the pair guilty of contributing to attempted murder, a charge linked to Hasan E.’s alleged stabbing of a security officer in Mecca in March 2024. Hasan E. also attacked and wounded three other officers and a woman before he was arrested, according to prosecutors.

Arda K. was given a 12-year sentence. The two men listened stoically to the verdict and the sentencing.

Claude Lemieux, 4-time Stanley Cup champion, dies at age 60

Claude Lemieux, a four-time Stanley Cup champion whose hockey career was built on playing on the edge with ferocity and physicality, has died. He was 60.

The NHL Alumni Association announced Lemieux’s death in a post on social media. A cause of death was not immediately available, nor was it clear where Lemieux was when he died.

Lemieux on Monday night was the Montreal Canadiens’ torchbearer prior to Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final at Bell Centre.

“Today is a dark day for the Canadiens family and the entire hockey community,” Canadiens owner Geoff Molson said. “A fierce competitor who rose to the occasion in big moments, Claude was a relentless, courageous, and tenacious player who led the team to the highest honors. He embodied the very essence of being a Montreal Canadiens player. Today we mourn the untimely passing of one of our champions. Our thoughts are with his family on this difficult day.”

As a player, Lemieux was a mix of skill and abrasiveness, not afraid to cross the line in the name of competition.

He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP for his role in helping the New Jersey Devils win their first championship in 1995. A year later with the Colorado Avalanche, he was suspended for two games for a hit from behind on Detroit’s Kris Draper on the way to them hoisting the Stanley Cup for the first time in their first season since moving from his native Quebec.

Joe Sakic, president of hockey operations and a former teammate of Lemieux’s with the Colorado Avalanche, said in a statement that Lemieux was a “fierce competitor and a champion in every way.”

“He was also a loyal friend who would do anything for his teammates and someone you could always count on,” Sakic wrote. “Most importantly, he was a wonderful family man and there is nothing he enjoyed more than spending time with his grandchildren. Today is a very sad day for the Avalanche family and Claude will be missed by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him.”

The Devils said in a statement that “Claude’s impact in bringing the first-ever Stanley Cup to New Jersey will forever be remembered as one of the paramount performances in team history. Widely respected throughout the NHL, both as a trusted agent and a valued colleague, Claude leaves behind a lasting legacy within our game that he gave so much to.”

Darren McCarty, a truculent member of the Red Wings during the heyday of their rivalry with the Avalanche that was sparked by Lemieux’s hit on Draper, posted a broken heart emoji on social media with the alumni’s announcement and additional thoughts about his former adversary’s death.

“This is extremely sad no matter what feelings from past or present you hold,” McCarty said. “My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends, and people who got to see the person off the ice wasn’t the person on. As I’ve said and will always call it as I see it “If you’re on the ICE with Claude Lemieux and your turn your back. YOU Are an IDIOT. But off the ICE I’ll turn mine” And please. If you are struggling at all please reach out and talk to someone. Godspeed my friend.”

Lemieux also won the Cup with Montreal in 1986 and returned to the Devils to be a part of their title run in 2000. He played 1,449 regular-season and playoff games with six different teams from 1983-2009.

Commissioner Gary Bettman called Lemieux “one of the greatest big-game players in hockey history.”

Lemieux had become an agent in the years since his playing career ended and represented Carolina’s Frederik Andersen, New Jersey’s Timo Meier, Detroit’s Moritz Seider and Boston’s Hampus Lindholm among more than a dozen clients in the NHL.

At a gathering in December to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of Colorado’s ’95 Stanley Cup championship, Lemieux said of winning, “When it’s happening, when you’re in the middle of it, you don’t quite appreciate it as much as you should.”

Late former teammate Chris Simon was represented during the on-ice ceremony by his children. He died in 2024 at 52.

Nick Bilton named executive producer of “60 Minutes”

Investigative journalist and filmmaker Nick Bilton has been named executive producer of “60 Minutes,” replacing Tanya Simon, who was promoted into the newsmagazine’s top role last year after more than three decades at CBS News.

The change marks a major turning point for the nation’s top-rated news program, which just wrapped up its 58th season. Bilton is just the fifth executive producer in “60 Minutes” history.

As debates about artificial intelligence (AI) regulation intensify, the latest Fox News Poll finds that most registered voters believe it is urgent for the federal government to address the issue, and protecting the public interest should take priority over promoting innovation.

Nearly 8 in 10 think it is extremely (40%) or very (37%) urgent for the government to address AI regulations.

By a 15-point margin, fewer voters under age 30 view regulating AI as urgent (69%) than those ages 65 and over (84%).

When asked what regulations should be prioritized, more voters favor protecting public interests (80%) than promoting innovation (19%) by a 61-point margin.

While majorities of all age groups prioritize protecting the public, there is still a generational divide: two-thirds of those under 30 favor it (66%), compared to nearly 9 in 10 voters ages 65+ (88%).

Partisan differences are smaller, though Democrats (83%) and independents (82%) are somewhat more likely than Republicans (77%) to prioritize protecting the public interest.

U.S. Coast Guard can send divers to Bahamas to search for missing American woman Lynette Hooker, source says

The U.S. Coast Guard has been granted permission by the Bahamian government to send divers to canvass previously unsearched areas in the search for missing Michigan woman Lynette Hooker, a source briefed on the investigation confirmed to CBS News Thursday.

The permission was granted to the U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service, the source disclosed.

Hooker, 55, was reported missing on April 5, one day after her husband, Brian Hooker, told authorities that the couple had set sail for a nighttime ride aboard a dinghy from Elbow Cay in the Bahamas.

Brian Hooker told local investigators that his wife fell from the dinghy and was swept away in the current with the keys to the boat, forcing him to paddle back to shore. He was initially arrested in connection with her disappearance, but was later released and allowed to return to the U.S. He has denied wrongdoing and has not been criminally charged.

On Tuesday, CBS News learned that newly obtained GPS data had prompted U.S. investigators to relaunch the search for Lynette Hooker. The data appeared to contradict Brian Hooker’s account of where his wife was on the night she disappeared.

Earlier this month, the sailboat the couple was using to travel around the Bahamas, Soulmate, was seized by Coast Guard investigators about 40 nautical miles south of Florida, sources told CBS News.

CBS News also learned this week that aboard the Soulmate was an infrared camera capable of detecting heat radiation. Investigators are looking into whether the camera, which uses a cloud memory system, was in use on the night that Lynette Hooker disappeared.

Federal investigators have also been seeking to identify the owners or occupants of a sailboat that may have been moored next to the Soulmate in Aunt Pat’s Bay on the night that Lynette Hooker disappeared. Investigators believe they may have information critical to the case.

In an interview with CBS News conducted in the week after Lynette Hooker’s disapperance, her daughter, Karli Aylesworth, said her parents had separated in recent years, but reconciled and gotten back together. She told CBS News that she did not believe her father’s description of the sequence of events that transpired on the night of her mother’s disappearance.

“For one, I don’t understand how she got the key,” Aylesworth said, referring to Brian Hooker telling investigators that Lynette Hooker fell off the boat, along with the keys to the boat. “Brian’s always driving. So he basically is in charge of the key. So the fact that my mom had it doesn’t make any sense.”

unit ABC on Thursday filed applications for early license review with the Federal Communications Commission for its eight company owned television stations after President Donald Trump pressured the regulatory agency to take action.

The early reviews – the first for a major TV broadcaster in more than 50 years – were ordered in April a day after Trump urged ABC to fire late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. Disney said the FCC early license renewal order was “unlawful, arbitrary, and unconstitutional” and violates its First Amendment free speech rights.

“This effort to suppress speech under the guise of bureaucratic process must not prevail,” ABC added. “It is an unprecedented attack on a single company’s entire portfolio of broadcast licenses.”

The FCC said last month the reviews, which were not supposed to begin until October 2028, were prompted by a year-long probe on the FCC’s ban on unlawful discrimination. The stations are located in Fresno, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, Houston and Durham, North Carolina.

The FCC did not immediately comment Thursday.

Trump has repeatedly urged broadcasters to drop comedy or news programs he dislikes or which have been critical of him, pressing regulators to revoke licenses of broadcasters he says are unfair to him.

Democratic FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez says the Trump administration is engaged in a targeted effort to censor Disney and its ABC network through a series of sweeping regulatory actions.

The FCC is also investigating ABC daytime talk show “The View” after declaring it is subject to federal equal time rules for political candidates.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr opened an investigation in March 2025 into Disney’s diversity practices and said Disney submitted documents in the probe that he felt were insufficient. He declined to say if a similar review of diversity practices at Comcast and NBC could lead to an early review there.

ABC rejected the argument that its nondiscrimination policies violated commission rules.

The company added it believed the proceeding was an exercise to search for a legal pretext to achieve its desired goal. The goal is “to ramp up toward possible license revocation and cause the station and others to think twice before they say something the government might dislike,” ABC said.

In November, Trump demanded the FCC revoke ABC licenses after he criticized an ABC News correspondent for asking Saudi Arabia’s crown prince about the 2018 killing of a Washington Post columnist in a question he dubbed “insubordinate.”
