    2026-06-03T01:24:51.134Z / https://www.reuters.com/world/us-supreme-court-clears-way-alabama-use-pro-republican-voting-map-2026-06-03/

US Supreme Court clears way for Alabama to use pro-Republican voting map

    2026-06-03T01:24:51.134Z / https://www.reuters.com/world/us-supreme-court-clears-way-alabama-use-pro-republican-voting-map-2026-06-03/

    • Summary
    • Lower court blocked pro-Republican congressional map
    • Three-judge panel cited intentional racial discrimination
    • Dispute follows Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act ruling
    • Trump’s Republicans fighting to keep control of Congress

WASHINGTON, June 2 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way on Tuesday for Alabama to use a pro-Republican congressional map that eliminates one of its two districts where Black voters make up a majority or near-majority, giving a boost to President Donald Trump as his party defends its control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.

The justices halted a lower court ruling that had blocked Alabama officials ‌from putting in place a map that aims to flip a U.S. House of Representatives district currently held by a Black Democratic congressman to the Republicans.

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

The action by the court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, came in an unsigned order. The three liberal justices dissented from the decision.

In its ruling, the conservative majority said Alabama was likely to ultimately defeat a legal challenge to its preferred map that was brought by several sets of plaintiffs including a group of Black voters.

Black voters typically support Democratic candidates. Republicans are defending narrow majorities in the House and Senate in the midterms.

The ruling on Tuesday cast doubt on the challengers’ claim that Alabama’s pro-Republican map violates the Voting Rights Act, a 1965 law intended to prevent discrimination in voting, and the U.S. Constitution’s promise of equal protection under the law.

“The state is likely to succeed on the merits as to both claims,” the conservative majority wrote. It added that, “States are free to decide for themselves whether last-minute changes to an election are in their best interests.”

The court’s action came amid a new and frenzied round of congressional redistricting that has unfolded across the South, as Republican-led states have scrambled to take advantage of an April Supreme Court decision that severely weakened the Voting Rights Act.

In the wake of that landmark decision, Tennessee approved a new map that broke up a majority-Black, Democratic-held district based in Memphis, while Louisiana adopted a plan to eliminate one of two districts with sizable Black populations in that state.

Alabama Republicans asked the Supreme Court to lift the judicial block put in place on May 26 by a federal three-judge panel that had halted the Republican-backed map’s use in the 2026 elections.

The lower court said the pro-Republican map intentionally discriminated against Black voters in violation of the equal protection principle and likely still violated the Voting Rights Act, even under the significantly heightened legal standard announced in the April ruling.

The Supreme Court’s three liberal justices condemned the majority’s decision in an opinion authored by Justice Sonia Sotomayor and joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, writing that the ruling “disregards both democratic values and the rule of law.”

Deuel Ross, a lawyer for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which represents a group of Black ‌voters that challenged Alabama’s map, said the Supreme Court’s ruling on Tuesday “gives cover to Alabama and others to deliberately and openly discriminate against Black voters without fear of any consequence.”

“The court’s shameless decision to reinstate an intentionally discriminatory map defies any thoughtful or consistent application of the law,” he said, adding that his group would continue to fight for Alabama voters “to have the fair representation that they deserve.”

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, a Republican, called the ruling “a major victory for Alabama and for the principle of self-governance.”

“The United States Supreme Court confirmed what we always knew: that Alabama’s Congressional maps are constitutional and lawful under the Voting Rights Act,” he said.

“The court’s decision to stay the district court’s injunction affirms that Alabama’s elected representatives, not federal judges, have the primary authority to draw the maps under which Alabamians choose their own leaders.”

Litigation over Alabama’s congressional map has ricocheted between the Supreme Court and the federal three-judge panel in recent years.

Republican state legislators have sought to return to a map they approved in 2023 that the same three-judge panel previously had deemed discriminatory. That map would drop the number of districts where Black voters comprise a majority or near-majority from two to one out of the state’s seven U.S. House districts. Black people make up about a quarter of Alabama’s population.

On May 11, the Supreme Court granted the state’s request to lift the lower court’s prior ruling blocking Alabama from using the map, before the three-judge panel weeks later imposed a new judicial block, prompting Alabama’s most recent filing to the justices.

Alabama Republicans had argued in their filing to the Supreme Court that voters would face “irreparable harm” if the state were required to use a map approved by the lower court instead of theirs.

In a process called redistricting, the boundaries of legislative districts across the United States are reconfigured to reflect population changes as measured by the national U.S. census every 10 years. Redistricting traditionally has been carried out by state legislatures at the start of each new decade, making the mid-decade redistricting fight now unfolding highly unusual.

Trump ignited the current battle last year by pushing Republican-governed Texas to redraw its electoral map in a bid to flip five Democratic-held U.S. House seats, setting off similar efforts in a number of other Republican- and Democratic-led states.

Lynette Hooker’s Bahamas disappearance being investigated as possible murder, official says

    June 2, 2026 / 8:07 PM EDT / CBS News

The case of Lynette Hooker, a Michigan woman who went missing in the Bahamas in April, is being investigated as a “possible foreign murder of a U.S. national,” a U.S. official told CBS News.

Search efforts for Hooker, 55, are still ongoing, as the 154-foot U.S. Coast Guard cutter Margaret Norvell arrived in Marsh Harbour on Tuesday carrying a team of specialized divers. The U.S. Coast Guard had been granted permission by the Bahamian government to send divers to canvass previously unsearched areas last week, a source briefed on the investigation told CBS News on Thursday.

The divers will be searching for new evidence, including Hooker’s body, based on GPS data gathered from an electronic device. Investigators have also been to the Abaco Inn, the last place Hooker was seen alive.

According to a U.S. official familiar with the matter, the government has been investigating the case as a possible foreign murder of a U.S. national for weeks, and that investigative posture has remained consistent. While public statements have generally described the matter as a “criminal investigation,” officials have been examining the case under the framework of a federal statute that covers the foreign murder of U.S. nationals.

No charges have been filed, and the official emphasized that the recent characterization should not be interpreted as a new development or shift in the investigation.

According to an official familiar with the investigation, the new digital forensic evidence appears to undercut Brian Hooker’s account of his wife’s disappearance. Brian Hooker told authorities that he and Lynette Hooker were on their dinghy going back to their sailboat, the Soulmate, when rough waters knocked her into the sea and left him drifting for several hours. Lynette Hooker was last seen near Aunt Pat’s Bay, near Elbow Cay and Hope Town, Brian Hooker told local authorities.

The U.S. official previously told CBS News the GPS data from one of Brian Hooker’s devices showed movements that did not align with what he told investigators. The data shows the device was out on the water, stopping in the Sea of Abaco before returning, the official said, giving investigators a more precise location to search.

Brian Hooker was arrested in connection with Lynette Hooker’s disappearance several days later, but was released and allowed to return to the U.S. He has denied wrongdoing and has not been criminally charged.

“The story didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me,” Troy Pritchard, a member of the initial search team, told CBS News. “But going on information that we had, we had to do our best to search what was told to us in the initial talks with the police.”

Baine and Marnee Stevenson, who are friends of Lynette Hooker’s, told CBS News they hope the new evidence helps solve the case.

“I’m hoping this is a step in the right direction for justice for Lynette,” Marnee Stevenson said.

“I have faith that following their GPS coordinates, they’re going to find something,” Blaine Stevenson added.

GOP Rep. Tom Kean Jr. to face Rebecca Bennett in November as Democrats seek to oust absent New Jersey incumbent

Caitlin Yilek is a politics reporter at CBSNews.com, based in Washington, D.C. She previously worked for the Washington Examiner and The Hill, and was a member of the 2022 Paul Miller Washington Reporting Fellowship with the National Press Foundation.

Rebecca Bennett won the Democratic primary in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday, CBS News projects, and will take on GOP Rep. Tom Kean Jr., who has been missing from the job for nearly three months.

The district is one of the most vulnerable for House Republicans in the 2026 midterms, with the nonpartisan Cook Political Report rating the race a toss up. The race will help determine which party controls the House for the final two years of President Trump’s second term.

Kean won the seat in 2022 after redistricting made the district more favorable to Republicans. President Trump endorsed Kean on Monday, saying he’s “working tirelessly” to achieve his priorities.

But Kean’s whereabouts since he last voted on March 5 are unknown. In an April 27 statement, Kean said he was addressing a “personal medical issue.” Statements from his staff and family members have only added to the mystery.

“There’s no cameras where Tom is,” his chief of staff told the New York Times.

Kean’s father, former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean Sr., told CNN that his doctors “all agree he’s going to be fine.”

“It took a real illness to knock him out,” Kean Sr. added. “This won’t linger. It’s not some kind of disease that’s going to incapacitate him in the future. The consensus is that he will be 100% OK.”

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/9b6c932b-88e4-4a62-9543-ba73ff70b883

In a phone interview with the New Jersey Globe on May 21, the congressman offered few details about the medical issue and reiterated that he is running for a third term.

Kean issued another statement Tuesday via his campaign that said he was focusing on his recovery and that he would be back in Washington in several weeks.

“I will transition from virtual work to in person work within a matter of weeks. At that time I will be completely transparent as to the nature of my medical condition,” Kean said, giving no new details about his health.

Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, beat three Democratic opponents to advance to the November general election.

    Summary

    • Rebecca Bennett wins Democratic primary by 28 points over closest rival
    • Thomas Kean absent from Congress due to undisclosed medical issue, promises transparency on health
    • District seen as key toss-up for House control, contest rated a toss-up by independent analysts

WASHINGTON, June 1 (Reuters) – Democrat Rebecca Bennett emerged from a highly competitive primary on Tuesday to take on Republican U.S. Representative Thomas Kean in the November general election in New Jersey’s seventh congressional district, U.S. media projected.

Bennett emerged from a crowded field as the winner with a 28 point-lead over her closest rival, Tina Shah, with 48% of the vote counted, according to the Associated Press. Kean, who has been absent from Congress with a mystery medical issue since early March, ran unopposed.

Kean and Bennett will now square off in November for a seat that has changed party hands twice within the past eight years and now ranks as a key target for Democrats hoping to capture the House of Representatives. Independent analysts rate the contest as a toss-up.

The swing district of suburbs and small towns stretches from Staten Island to the Pennsylvania border and includes President Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf course. Trump carried the district in 2024, edging out Democrat Kamala Harris by ‌just over a percentage point.

Kean, 57, is the scion of a storied New Jersey political family. His father, Thomas, was governor for nearly two decades. His great grandfather was a longtime congressman. And he is descended from the state’s first governor, William Livingston. Most recently, Kean has been prominent for missing more than 100 House votes due to an undisclosed medical condition.

Hours before polls closed, Kean released a statement promising to be transparent about his health but pushing his return to work further into the future, after saying on May 21 that he would be back in “a couple of weeks.” “Right now, I am focused on my recovery and under the advice of healthcare professionals, I will transition from virtual to in person work within a matter of weeks,” Kean said.

Bennett, 39, a healthcare executive and former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, has been seen as the Democratic frontrunner, with a fund-raising advantage and endorsements from Democratic parties in the district’s four largest counties.
