President Trump’s address surpassed Bill Clinton’s 2000 speech that previously held the modern-era timing milestone

President Donald Trump now holds the modern-era record for the longest State of the Union address, surpassing President Bill Clinton’s 2000 speech.

The State of the Union is the president’s annual address to Congress and the country, which operates as equal parts progress report, agenda blueprint and political measuring stick for what comes next. Trump’s speech largely focused on the economy and turning a page to usher in the “golden age.”

“After just one year, I can say with dignity and pride that we have achieved a transformation like no one has ever seen before,” Trump declared from the dais Tuesday evening.

Clinton’s Jan. 27, 2000, address ran about 1 hour, 28 minutes and 49 seconds and has long stood as the longest televised State of the Union in modern tracking.

Trump broke that record just around 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday.

Trump had previewed the length ahead of Tuesday’s address, saying, “It’s going to be a long speech because we have a lot to talk about.”

Tuesday’s speech is Trump’s first official State of the Union of his second term. He delivered a joint address to Congress in March 2025, which operated the same as an official SOTU address but did not bear the same title as it was too early in his administration.

Trump already owns a separate, attention-grabbing timing milestone from that speech. That March 4, 2025, address ran about 1 hour, 39 minutes and 32 seconds, surpassing Clinton’s 2000 runtime, though that 2025 appearance was not formally classified as a State of the Union address.

Clinton used his final State of the Union to tout the late-1990s boom and budget surpluses while pitching a new agenda on education, health care, Social Security and climate change for the new millennium.

“My fellow Americans, each time I prepare for the State of the Union, I approach it with great hope and expectations for our nation. But tonight is special—because we stand on the mountaintop of a new millennium. Behind us we see the great expanse of American achievement; before us, even grander frontiers of possibility,” Clinton said in his final State of the Union speech.

Data shows modern presidents typically speak far longer than their counterparts did decades ago. In the 1960s and 1970s, many addresses lasted under an hour, while more recent speeches have frequently stretched well beyond that mark, Fox News Digital found.

President Richard Nixon averaged the shortest State of the Union speeches at 35 minutes, while President Donald Trump’s first term featured some of the longest, averaging about 80 minutes.

Trump has a long track record of lengthy speeches, from hourslong campaign rallies to marquee appearances as president.

Trump, for example, gave a two-hour and two-minute speech during the 2019 Conservative Political Action Conference, and also holds the record for longest presidential nomination acceptance speech. Trump delivered a 93-minute acceptance speech at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, breaking his 2016 record at about 75 minutes.

Judge blocks DOJ from searching Washington Post reporter’s phone and laptop

    February 24, 2026 / 7:51 PM EST / CBS News

A federal judge has blocked the Justice Department from searching through a Washington Post reporter’s electronic devices after they were seized by the FBI last month, instead ruling that the court would conduct a search.

The FBI seized reporter Hannah Natanson’s phone, laptops, Garmin watch, and portable hard drives as part of an investigation into a government contractor who was later indicted for allegedly disseminating classified material. The move was highly unusual, and drew steep criticism and alarm from press groups. Attorney General Pam Bondi said it was aimed at catching a perpetrator of “illegal leaks” that “pose a grave risk to our Nation’s national security.”

The Post had asked the court to return Natanson’s property and put any copies under seal, arguing a search could violate her First Amendment rights. The government, meanwhile, has argued that filter teams, or separate groups of Justice Department lawyers, could go through Natanson’s devices and find any information relevant to the government’s investigation.

But in a Tuesday night opinion, U.S. Magistrate Judge William Porter of Virginia rejected the government’s push to conduct a search, instead deciding that the court “will conduct an independent judicial review of the seized materials.”

Porter wrote that “allowing the government’s filter team to search a reporter’s work product — most of which consists of unrelated information from confidential sources — is the equivalent of leaving the government’s fox in charge of the Washington Post’s henhouse.”

He continued: “The concern that a filter team may err by neglect, by malice, or by honest difference of opinion is heightened where its institutional interests are so directly at odds with the press freedom values at stake.”

Porter said the government must return to Natanson all materials “outside the limited information authorized by the search warrant.”

However, Porter denied a motion from The Washington Post that sought to return Natanson’s devices to her and the company. The judge said he “takes seriously … that this case involves top secret national security information,” and that classified information may need to be protected before Natanson’s materials are returned to her.

“No easy remedy exists here,” the magistrate judge wrote, noting that the FBI’s search of Natanson had the effect of “terminating her access to the confidential sources she developed and to all the tools she needs as a working journalist.”

“The government’s proposed remedy—that she simply buy a new phone and laptop, set up new accounts, and start from scratch—is unjust and unreasonable,” Porter added. “The Court’s genuine hope is that this search was conducted—as the government contends—to gather evidence of a crime in a single case, not to collect information about confidential sources from a reporter who has published articles critical of the administration.”

Porter also criticized the government for failing to mention a federal privacy law surrounding seizure of reporters’ materials, the Privacy Protection Act of 1980, in its search warrant application. That law restricts the government’s ability to seize reporters’ work product when they aren’t the ones being investigated for a crime.

The magistrate said the government’s omission “has seriously undermined the Court’s confidence in the government’s disclosures in this proceeding.”

Porter’s decision came four days after attorneys representing the Post and Natanson squared off against the Justice Department in court.

The Post and Natanson have argued the seizure of the reporter’s devices could violate the First Amendment’s press freedom protections by making it difficult for her to do her job and endangering her confidential sources.

Simon Latcovich, an attorney from Williams and Connolly representing the Post, said Friday that “the Government here seized the newsroom” during its search of Natanson’s Virginia home.

“It’s not about one reporter or one newsroom, it’s about all confidential government sources,” he later added.

The Justice Department has argued that the search executed at her home was legal and warranted to investigate a serious leak of highly sensitive information, writing in a court filing that the First Amendment isn’t “a journalist’s exception to search warrants.”

The department has also argued that it had proper systems in place to review Natanson’s devices and separate out privileged materials.

Gabe Rottman, vice president of policy at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, a nonprofit legal group that provides resources to reporters, said Tuesday that the court made the “right call – and the constitutionally appropriate one – by taking it upon itself to review the material and in ordering that information unrelated to the underlying investigation will be returned to Natanson.”

Fact checking Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address

    2026-02-24T21:44:00-0500 / CBS News

CBS News is fact checking President Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address Tuesday night. The president is touting his first-year accomplishments and plans for his agenda this year, in the months before the midterm elections in November.

Here are some of the claims the president made during his speech, and CBS News’ ratings and context for those claims:

True: Trump claims murder rate saw its largest decline in recorded history last year

“Last year, the murder rate saw its single largest decline in recorded history. This is the biggest decline, think of it, in recorded history — the lowest number in over 125 years.”

    Details:

    • Preliminary data from independent researchers suggests that homicides may have hit an 125-year low last year, although the FBI’s official annual crime report for 2025 will not be released until later this year.
    • A January study by the Council on Criminal Justice, or CCJ, found a “strong possibility” that the 2025 homicide rate will drop to about 4 per 100,000 residents, which would be the lowest recorded in law enforcement or public health data dating back to 1900. The homicide rate has been declining since 2022, according to annual FBI reports.
    • The CCJ report also noted that the reasons for last year’s decline are not clear, but researchers say possible influences include “changes in criminal justice policies and programs, shifts in the use of technology, and broader social, economic, and cultural trends.”

Partially true: Trump claims that in the past 9 months, no illegal immigrants have been admitted into the U.S.

“In the past nine months, zero illegal aliens have been admitted to the United States.”

    Details:

Mr. Trump is likely referring to the number of migrants released by Border Patrol after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.

Over the past nine months, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has reported zero releases of migrants by Border Patrol along the U.S. southern border.

That does not necessarily mean every single migrant who has entered the U.S. illegally since Mr. Trump took office has been deported.

Some migrants initially arrested by Border Patrol and then transferred to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement could be released by that agency, though the Trump administration has sought to bar those who entered the U.S. illegally from being eligible for bond.

Border Patrol’s numbers also do not account for migrants who enter the U.S. illegally surreptitiously, without being caught by Border Patrol agents. It’s unclear how many of those so-called “got-aways” have been recorded under the second Trump administration.

Overall, illegal border crossings have plummeted under Mr. Trump’s second administration, falling to the lowest level since 1970 in fiscal year 2025. Still, thousands of migrants continue crossing into the U.S. illegally each month. In January, Border Patrol apprehended roughly 6,000 migrants after they crossed the southern border unlawfully, government data show.

Misleading: Trump claims more Americans working today than at any time in U.S. history

“More Americans are working today than at any time in the history of our country. Think about that — any time in the history of our country, more working today. And 100% of all jobs created under my administration have been in the private sector.”

    Details:

Preliminary data from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics show there are roughly 158.6 million people employed in the U.S., as of January 2026, which is more than at any other point on record. But the total number of employed people usually rises as the population grows. About 157 million people were employed when President Joe Biden left office in January 2025.

Economists generally rely on the share of people working to compare labor market strength over time, which has remained largely flat over the past year. The labor force participation rate sat at 62.5% in January, which is identical to the rate in December 2024, Biden’s last full month in office.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate has ticked up under Mr. Trump to 4.3% from 4.1% in December 2024.

False/not supported: Trump claims he’s secured $18 trillion in new investment in the U.S.

“In four long years, the last administration got less than $1 trillion in new investment in the United States. And when I say less, substantially less. In 12 months, I secured commitments for more than $18 trillion, pouring in from all over the globe.”

    Details:

    • According to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, new foreign direct investments over Biden’s four years in office did add up to less than $1 trillion.
    • But a CBS News review found no evidence that total commitments or new investments approach the scale the president has cited. New investment of $18 trillion would represent almost 60% of U.S. GDP.
    • The administration’s own list of major investment commitments “made possible by President Trump’s leadership” totaled $9.6 trillion as of the latest update in November, but even that figure is exaggerated and includes some investments announced while Biden was president.
    • Additionally, federal data shows corporate investment levels are similar to levels last year, with U.S. companies on track to invest over $5 trillion in 2025. Overall, since the end of the pandemic, corporate investment has been rising.

FBI chief Patel’s travel, decision-making hampered investigations, Senate Democrat says

    • Summary
    • Whistleblower alleges FBI team delayed in reaching Kirk assassination site
    • Patel has faced scrutiny over travel following Olympics trip
    • FBI spokesman dismisses criticism

WASHINGTON, Feb 24 (Reuters) – A top Senate Democrat alleged on Tuesday that FBI Director Kash Patel’s personal travel and decision-making have undermined high-profile investigations, citing a whistleblower report.

Senator Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, wrote in a letter to two government watchdogs that Patel has “seemingly engaged in what amounts to irresponsible joyriding on DOJ and FBI-operated aircraft at the expense of the American taxpayer and to the detriment of ongoing Bureau operations.”

A whistleblower told Durbin’s staff that the FBI’s shooting reconstruction team was delayed in responding to the Utah university where conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated in September because of a pilot shortage caused by Patel’s personal travel.

Pilots had to complete a mandatory rest period before flying the team of investigators, tasked with analyzing and reconstructing shooting scenes, to Utah, according to Durbin’s letter. Reuters could not independently verify the whistleblower’s claims. The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the allegations. But FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson dismissed the criticism in an X post, saying Durbin was “full of it.”

The disclosures added to scrutiny of Patel’s taxpayer-funded trips on FBI planes. Patel’s trip to the Olympics in Milan, Italy drew widespread attention after videos showed his beer-soaked locker-room celebration with the U.S. men’s hockey team following their gold medal win on Sunday.

Williamson said previously that Patel was in Italy on official business and attended meetings with foreign officials and U.S. personnel handling security at the Olympics. Patel has said the FBI director is legally required to travel on government planes.

Durbin requested the Government Accountability Office, a research arm of Congress, investigate the new claims and the Justice Department’s internal watchdog examine Patel’s travel.

The whistleblower also said Patel’s decisions delayed investigators tasked with responding to a mass shooting at Brown University in December.
