Trump endorses John James in Michigan governor race as GOP rival exits primary

State Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt dropped his gubernatorial bid and backed James after Trump’s endorsement

President Donald Trump on Monday endorsed U.S. Rep. John James, who is running for governor in Michigan.

“It is my Great Honor to endorse America First Congressman, John James, who is running to become the next Governor of the Beautiful State of Michigan!” the president declared in part of a Truth Social post. “John James has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Governor of Michigan — HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!”

James thanked Trump, calling him “The greatest President of my lifetime” in social media posts.

After Trump issued the endorsement message on Monday, Michigan state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt dropped out of the Michigan Republican gubernatorial primary and endorsed James.

“This campaign has always been about the people of Michigan and standing with President Trump to defeat the Democrats in November. Today, I am suspending my campaign and proudly joining President Trump in endorsing John James as Michigan’s next Governor,” Nesbitt declared in social media posts. “A divided primary only helps Democrats. It’s time to unite. I’m asking every one of you who supported this campaign to stand with me behind John James, roll up our sleeves, and deliver a Republican victory in November.”

James responded to Nesbitt’s move, asserting in part of a post on X, “When President Trump endorsed this campaign, Aric Nesbitt did exactly what a true Michigan CONSERVATIVE should do: He united behind the President and our mission to Save Michigan from the Libs and the RINOs destroying our Republic!”

Businessman Perry Johnson, who is also running in the Michigan Republican gubernatorial primary, suggested that the president had made the wrong move by backing James.

“President Trump received bad advice yet again. John James is a two-time statewide loser, and Michigan has already seen this movie before: Trump-backed statewide candidates like John James, Tudor Dixon, Matt DePerno, and Kristina Karamo all came up short when it mattered most,” Johnson asserted in social media posts.

Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, who is also running, asserted in a post on X, “Like @POTUS, I’ve won Michigan twice by building a coalition of working Michiganders who are sick of being screwed by the elites. I’m proud to have voted for President Trump in each of his last three elections, to have donated thousands of dollars to support his campaigns, and to have been hired to represent him as his election integrity lawyer in Michigan in 2024. I look forward to being President Trump’s favorite Governor when I win.”

Medicare’s AI push snarls patients and doctors in errors and delays

June 23, 2026 5:00 AM EDT / KFF Health News

Bill Curry, 65, raises cattle on the same land in rural Oklahoma once owned by his father and generations before him. Each quarter, for several years, he has made the 2½-hour drive to Oklahoma City for an epidural in his spine to treat his back pain.

But this year, because of a new Medicare program, Curry has traveled a little more often.

In February, during one trip, he was told unexpectedly that he needed preapproval for the procedure. Then he went again a month or so later to get the injection, for a total of 10 hours on the road. His clinic wanted him to come in a third time, which they had never asked of him before. That appointment was “just to fill out a piece of paper to tell them how you feel again,” Curry said, so he hasn’t gone.

In January, Oklahoma became one of six states to begin a pilot program testing the use of preapprovals in traditional Medicare, the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older or with disabilities. Medicare had previously eschewed the practice — also known as prior authorization — which requires patients or someone on their medical team to seek insurance approval before proceeding with certain procedures, tests, and prescriptions.

Epidurals like Curry’s are among 13 medical services subject to the new program because the Trump administration says they’re prone to fraud or misuse. Powered by artificial intelligence, the program — called the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction Model, or WISeR — is intended to save the federal government money and protect patients from potentially unsafe or unneeded care.

Yet early reviews from Oklahoma and the other pilot states — Arizona, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, and Washington — suggest WISeR’s rollout has not been smooth. Patients, doctors, and other healthcare professionals who spoke with KFF Health News say the effort has created confusion, errors, long wait times, and stress. Some described the rollout as “horrendous” and say people enrolled in Medicare in the pilot states are now getting ensnared in the same red tape as those with private insurance.

One key concern is that it all happened too hastily. WISeR was announced in June 2025 and launched in mid-January.

That was “quicker than normal” for the federal government, said Todd Baker, who recently stepped down as CEO of the Ohio State Medical Association. Doctors “just sort of had to figure it out,” added Jeb Shepard, director of policy at the Washington State Medical Association.

Government contractors have also acknowledged the rapid pace. “We’ve had an aggressive rollout from the time of being notified to going live,” said Jeremy Friese, CEO of Humata Health, the vendor for Oklahoma. Tech executives servicing other states have said they were still adding features to their products in the spring.

Abe Sutton, director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, which is administering the program, didn’t comment on the rollout schedule. But he said in a statement that the goal of these reforms is to ensure that prior authorization is efficient, fast, and streamlined.

“The model aims to reduce inappropriate care without delaying appropriate care,” he said.

Mehmet Oz, the leader of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, told NewsNation in December that they were “rolling out some prior authorization on abused practices.”

“The purpose of these is not to deny care,” Oz continued. “It’s to make sure you get the care you need and deserve, not the care some unscrupulous doctor wants to use on you.”

Medicare has struggled in recent years with suspected fraud associated with particular services. The Department of Health and Human Services’ inspector general warned in September that the program’s spending on skin substitutes, for example, had surged nearly 700% over two years, raising “major concerns about fraud, waste, and abuse.” Skin substitutes are among the 13 therapies currently subject to review under WISeR.

The program also imposes prior authorization requirements for kyphoplasty, a surgery for spinal fractures, which a report by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission flagged as overused.

Sutton acknowledged, however, that “the percentage of providers committing waste, fraud, and abuse is small.”

Consumers and clinicians largely detest prior authorization. Even as federal health officials test the process for Medicare, the Trump administration is trying to scale it back for those with private insurance. According to a KFF poll conducted in January, 69% of insured adults consider prior authorization a burden for care.

Through WISeR, doctors and their staff log in to online portals to submit medical records that justify the procedures. Using artificial intelligence, the systems quickly approve applications that meet the program’s criteria, Friese, Humata’s chief executive, told KFF Health News. He said there is an “immediate yes” in 88% of cases for which clinical data supports an approval.

CMS has touted the process as one in which decisions are returned within 72 hours. After that, clinicians receive a “universal tracking number,” which allows them to schedule the procedure and get paid. In practice, however, participants say the process is anything but easy.

The University of Washington’s medical system alone had nearly 100 patients waiting earlier this year for epidural injections due to WISeR-related delays, according to an April report from the office of U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) that drew on hospital association data. “Now, patients are subject to delays or denials which did not exist prior to the WISeR Model,” the report said.

Curry, the Oklahoma cattle farmer, said he might go to Kansas for future treatments to avoid the approval process. Dorota Gribbin, a New Jersey-based physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, said that by the time authorization came for one of her patients who needed a back pain procedure, the patient had gone to the hospital for more expensive care.

Jennifer Valle, a precertification and insurance supervisor at Clinical Radiology of Oklahoma, said when it comes to kyphoplasties, there has been a lot of “nitpicking” from reviewers. Other times, information her practice provides to CMS gets overlooked, she said, and reviewers ask for imaging that’s already in the file.

Claims with no problems are supposed to be paid within 15 days, said James Webb, a musculoskeletal radiologist in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who has also been frustrated by the prior approval and reimbursement process for kyphoplasties. “Six- to eight-week delays is what we’ve been seeing,” he said.

“It’s been horrendous,” said Jerry Sobel, a Phoenix-area pain management doctor. “Right from the beginning, there seemed to be no organization.” Sobel said that as of May, he hadn’t gotten paid by Medicare for nine epidurals.

“We continuously monitor operations and work closely with stakeholders to address questions and improve the provider experience,” said Sundar Subramanian, the CEO of Zyter, which has the contract for Arizona.

During an April webinar, another Zyter executive acknowledged a large backlog in payments stretching to January. Those backlogs “are currently being resolved,” Medicare’s Sutton said, without providing further detail.

When asked about other issues — including what doctors suspect are AI-driven errors — Medicare’s Sutton said the agency appreciates “feedback on provider experience.” It will be used “to help providers better understand WISeR processes,” he said.

Although CMS vendors say humans make the final decisions on approvals, doctors and their staffs believe artificial intelligence is playing a large role in the process and that denials are sometimes the result of AI hallucinations that garble or make up information.

One Arizona doctor, who wasn’t authorized by his practice to speak, recalled a denial saying his patient wasn’t eligible for procedures in the thoracic region, or mid-back. The patient needed an injection to the neck. Webb, the Oklahoma radiologist, documented four times that a patient lacked numbness, and yet his WISeR application was still denied, citing numbness, which, in the reviewer’s interpretation, would rule out the spinal surgery procedure.

Friese, Humata’s CEO, said he hasn’t heard about any AI hallucinations.

The process is also raising government costs. With more rejections, more appeals are being filed with Medicare’s administrative contractors. The government pays the contractors to handle the appeals, and Medicare’s Sutton acknowledged that the agency has “accounted for potential changes in the volume of Medicare appeals because of the WISeR program and its associated costs.”

Eighty-four percent of commercial insurers already use AI tools, according to a survey released in 2025 by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, though they have consistently said AI isn’t used to deny prior authorization requests.

Its use in Medicare risks introducing friction and frustration into the program — and piling costs onto its beneficiaries. Prior authorization saves money for insurers partly by making patients pay a price in wait times and inconvenience, said Miranda Yaver, a University of Pittsburgh health policy researcher studying the technique.

“People will end up getting ensnared in a lot of red tape, having to be on hold, and getting rerouted,” she said. She often wonders whether prior authorization simply shifts costs to patients and doctors, rather than saving them.

Some doctors involved in Medicare’s prior authorization experiment believe it will inevitably expand beyond a few services officials in Washington consider fraud-prone.

“Everybody knows that if this pilot project works, it will be prior auth for basically all procedures,” said Mary Clarke, a family practice physician in Stillwater, Oklahoma. “If they can show that they can save money, then that’s going to be extrapolated and rolled out to other procedures and multiple other things in other states.”

When asked whether CMS is considering expansion of its prior authorization pilot, Sutton said in his statement that there are “currently no changes” considered for the list of services subject to the WISeR program, “but CMS continues to assess whether any changes are warranted.”

For years, the biggest fear about artificial intelligence was that it might take your job. Now, US officials and their intelligence partners have a more urgent concern: that some AI models are just months away from being capable of launching cyberattacks powerful enough to overwhelm governments and major companies. A group of international spy agencies issued a joint statement Monday urging leaders to “act now” to strengthen their defenses, days after the Trump administration ordered AI giant Anthropic to suspend foreign nationals’ access to its most advanced models.

New York Mayor Mamdani endorsements test Democrats’ appetite for far-left candidates

    2026-06-23T10:02:39.597Z / Reuters

WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s push to remake the Democratic Party into a democratic socialist powerhouse faces a primary election test on Tuesday. But win or lose, it is unlikely to provide an effective blueprint for Democrats taking control of the U.S. Congress in November or the White House in 2028.

The mayor, who shocked the political world with ‌his 2025 election, is backing a slate of fellow democratic socialist candidates running in Tuesday’s New York primaries as they take on establishment Democrats, including one senior Latino in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Get weekly news and analysis on U.S. politics and how it matters to the world with the Reuters Politics U.S. newsletter. Sign up here.

This comes on the heels of democratic socialist candidates winning primaries in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles mayor races. Furthermore, a democratic socialist won the Seattle mayor’s race last year.

Mamdani’s efforts to expand the democratic socialist base in the U.S. comes after a decade-long effort that was spurred on by Senator Bernie Sanders’ surprisingly popular 2016 presidential campaign and his efforts to nurture a new generation of democratic socialist leaders.

But it is also in response to progressive Democratic voters’ anger at President Donald Trump’s agenda and governing style, and at the Biden administration’s backing of Israel’s war against Gaza following a Hamas attack. Israel’s response resulted in more than 73,000 Palestinian deaths.

“Energy on the far right ignites energy on the far left. Politics is reactive,” said Steve Israel, a former U.S. House member from New York who late in his congressional career ran an operation to elect more Democrats.

    DEMOCRATIC PARTY TENSIONS RUN HIGH

For months after Mamdani won his 2025 primary election, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries was dogged by reporters asking whether he would endorse his fellow New Yorker. Jeffries did so, but kept the everyone guessing until just 11 days before the general election.

Meanwhile, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York remained silent on Mamdani throughout the campaign.

The rub is that Jeffries is positioned to ascend to U.S. House speaker and thus second in line for the presidency if Democrats win November’s midterm elections.

The path to victory does not run through “blue,” solidly Democratic congressional districts. Instead, it’s the “purple” swing districts where Democrats need to beat Republicans.

Nonetheless, if the Mamdani-backed democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier defeats five-term Democratic Representative Adriano Espaillat in New York City’s 13th district covering northern Manhattan and the Bronx, it would carry national implications that could complicate Jeffries’ task.

“If a DSA member could knock off the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, that could matter,” said Matt Bennett, co-founder of Third Way, a centrist Democratic consultancy.

Even more relevant could be the controversial stances Avila Chevalier has touted in past social media postings, such as calling for abolishing police and border controls and raising ‌questions about Israel’s right to exist.

“This is precisely the kind of person that they (Republicans) love to use to weaponize against other Democrats” running for office in competitive races, Bennett said.

Steve Israel agreed and said in an interview: “I do worry that the strength of democratic socialists in places like New York and California will be misread as the center of gravity for Democrats across the country” this November or in the 2028 presidential election.

Avila Chevalier has since deleted her social media posts and apologized for some of the language she used.

But in a Thursday interview with a consortium of editors on June 17, Avila Chevalier said: “I think that we just should not have a system that allows (migrant) deportation to happen at all,” saying it “is rooted in deeply racist ideology.”

In response to her views, Espaillat said in a June 16 posting on X: “We can’t just sweep things under the rug. Darializa has taken very extreme positions as reflected in her comments on social media not too long ago.” He added, “She is unfit for office and voters are smart enough to see that.”

    DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS AGAINST DEMOCRATS

A Democratic socialist is also attempting to defeat incumbent Democratic Representative Dan Goldman in New York City’s 10th congressional district, while another is vying for the 7th congressional district House seat where Democratic Representative Nydia Velazquez is retiring.

Alex Jacquez, a progressive strategist who was a senior adviser to Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, said in an interview that focus groups and opinion polls deliver the message that Democratic voters’ level of dissatisfaction with their leaders runs deep.

“That is really where you are seeing the fault lines. Are you willing to take on the wealthy and take on corporations and take on the status quo to deliver results. Or are you not,” he said of the populist message democratic socialists are trying to win on this fall and through the 2028 elections and beyond.

Meantime, outside of deep-blue districts of New York, California and other Democratic strongholds, the party is running women with strong military backgrounds in places like Florida and Colorado for example.

“Most of the competitive districts for Democrats are red and pink districts that you can only win as a Democrat in … where more moderate stances resonate in races against incumbent Republicans,” Israel said. He added that presidential elections are not won in blue states. “It’s won in seven moderate battleground states.”

Trump to pay visit to closely divided Pennsylvania in return to campaigning

June 23 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump returns to the campaign trail for the first time in two weeks on Tuesday, visiting politically divided Pennsylvania to deliver a pitch about the revival of the U.S. Rust Belt to voters feeling inflation’s bite.

Trump is due to visit a Mack Trucks

assembly plant in Macungie, Pennsylvania, where he’ll shift gears from Iran and pitch his jobs-and-reindustrialization agenda to factory workers who have formed the base of his “Make America Great Again” political movement.

The U.S. president’s Republican Party is seeking to retain control of Congress in November’s midterm elections. A nearly four-month U.S.-Israeli war with Iran has complicated Trump’s economic message, driving consumer costs up at the fastest rate in three years. The U.S. and Iran are negotiating a potential peace deal in the conflict.

Trump is expected to accentuate the positive, especially a steadily growing U.S. economy, resilient labor market data and the possibility that a future resolution to the war could ease costs.

“Under the President’s leadership, key domestic industries are being revitalized, historic investments are pouring back into communities like Macungie, and families across the country are securing new, high-paying jobs,” said Liz Huston, a White House spokeswoman.

Pennsylvania’s 7th congressional district, spanning the state’s Lehigh Valley, is widely regarded as a toss-up race. The district includes Allentown, the subject of a Billy Joel blue-collar anthem, and its economy has retained a strong manufacturing base. Pennsylvania will also be one of the biggest prizes in 2028’s presidential election.

Freshman Republican Congressman Ryan Mackenzie represents the area, which selected former President Joe Biden over Trump in 2020. The district favored Trump over Democrat Kamala Harris in 2024.

In an emailed statement, state Democratic Party chair Eugene DePasquale tied local Republican candidates, including Mackenzie, to what he called a “costly war of choice that caused gas prices to skyrocket” and “cruel healthcare cuts” pushed by Trump.

Zohran Mamdani’s influence over Democrats put to the test, and other things to watch in Tuesday’s elections

    2026-06-23T09:00:26.012Z / CNN

New York’s primaries on Tuesday will test just how influential Mayor Zohran Mamdani is with voters six months into his tenure and offer a preview of the ideological battles to come as Democrats look ahead to the 2028 presidential primary.

The democratic socialist’s decision to endorse candidates in three House races — including against Democratic incumbents in two of them — has raised the stakes in contests for seats the party is all but certain to retain in November.

Those races are among several closely watched primaries in New York. They come on the same day as primaries in Maryland and Utah, and primary runoffs in South Carolina that include a Republican race for governor.

Here are Tuesday’s primaries to watch:

Mamdani endorsed former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander against 10th District Rep. Dan Goldman. Lander was one of the candidates Mamdani defeated in the mayoral race last year, but they were allied against Andrew Cuomo in the primary. He ultimately became an important validator for Mamdani with Jewish voters in the general election, though Lander didn’t get a City Hall job like originally expected.

He backed Darializa Avila Chevalier, an educator and immigrant rights’ activist, against Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District.

In the 7th District, where 17-term Rep. Nydia Velázquez is retiring, Mamdani is supporting Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, who is taking on Velázquez’s preferred replacement, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.

These contests are part of a broader ideological battle being waged within the party — and in recent weeks, Mamdani’s side has had the national momentum.

A year after Mamdani and and fellow democratic socialist Katie Wilson in Seattle won mayors’ races, at least two more of the United States’ biggest cities could elect democratic socialists.

Earlier this month, city councilwoman Janeese Lewis George won the Democratic primary to become the next mayor of Washington, DC, all but assuring she will win in November in the overwhelmingly blue city. Primary voters in Los Angeles also chose a democratic socialist city councilwoman, Nithya Raman, to take on incumbent Mayor Karen Bass this fall.

Both Valdez and Avila Chevalier, like Mamdani, are democratic socialists. The mayor’s decision to back Avila Chevalier against Espaillat, the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, has particularly rankled Latino leaders in New York City as well as Jewish leaders who have noted Avila Chevalier’s attendance at a widely condemned pro-Palestinian rally the day after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.

But it all comes as the 2028 Democratic primary looms — with candidates likely to enter the protracted battle over what the party’s future should look like in a post-Trump political era as soon as this year’s midterm elections conclude.

At a rally last week with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for the congressional candidates both are backing, Mamdani said that the Democratic Party for too long “has seen its job as explaining why we cannot instead of showing how we can, and that old way of thinking will lose on Tuesday. And frankly, it will lose in South Carolina and New Hampshire. It will fall short of 270 electoral votes, because the party of the past will not be what leads us into the future.”

“When does the race for 2028 begin?” he added. “It starts now. It starts on Tuesday.”

He also tore into the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, suggesting AIPAC was part of a group of “monsters” that include “those who fund television ads that blanket the airwaves with misleading and bad faith attacks.” His reference to “monsters” drew criticism from some Jewish community leaders who said his language was antisemitic. Mamdani defended what he said when pressed on the subject Monday.

Trump did something rather transparent on Friday.

Facing the prospect of one of his endorsed candidates for governor losing a primary for the third time this month, Trump decided to just endorse the other remaining candidate, too.

Despite having Trump’s endorsement, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette only narrowly led state Attorney General Alan Wilson in the primary two weeks ago, 29%-26%. Wilson is considered a real threat to beat her on Tuesday, and now Trump has backed him as well.

Trump has played games like this with his endorsements before. He endorsed “Eric” in the 2022 Missouri Senate primary, when two top candidates shared that name. (One of them is now-Sen. Eric Schmitt.) And last year, he endorsed business executive Karrin Taylor Robson but then also endorsed Rep. Andy Biggs when Biggs later joined the race. (Robson later dropped out.)

Trump’s second endorsement means he’ll be able to claim he endorsed whoever wins. But if Wilson wins by a decent margin, it’ll be pretty clear Trump was covering his backside — and that his endorsement of Evette failed, just like his endorsement of Rep. Randy Feenstra did in Iowa and just like his backing of Lt. Gov. Burt Jones did in Georgia last week.

But that’s not the only test of Trump’s endorsement Tuesday.

We’ll also see a significant one in Rep. Elise Stefanik’s district. There, Trump-backed businessman Anthony Constantino is facing off against Assemblymember Robert Smullen, who has the backing of the state Republican Party.

Earlier this month, we saw a Democratic billionaire lose his second big campaign despite spending gobs of his own money. Six years after his failed bid for the Democrats’ presidential nomination, Tom Steyer spent $216 million to finish third in the open primary for California governor.

But depending on how things shake out Tuesday, there could be a Democratic billionaire with an even worse record.

That could be former Rep. David Trone, who is challenging Rep. April McClain Delaney in one of the most expensive primaries of 2026. Trone has self-funded more than $25 million. McClain Delaney has also spent millions of her own money.

Trone already holds two of the top 10 spots when it comes to how much of his own money he’s spent per vote in failed campaigns, including a 2016 run for Congress ($379 per vote) and a 2024 run for Senate (more than $200 per vote).

On Tuesday, he’ll either rejoin Congress or make it a third campaign in which he’s lit part of his own fortune on fire.

Trump has pardoned a lot of people — and especially a lot of political allies.

And on Tuesday, one of them could win a primary and be set to join Congress.

Trump pardoned then-state Rep. Phil Lyman in 2020 for illegally riding an all-terrain vehicle in a closed Utah canyon. It was part of a protest against the federal Bureau of Land Management. (Trump has also pardoned others who committed more series crimes while protesting BLM out west.)

Lyman, who lost to Gov. Spencer Cox by eight points in a 2024 primary, is now challenging Rep. Celeste Maloy, a somewhat moderate Republican, in a primary.

If he wins, he’ll be a heavy favorite to join Congress.

A Kennedy family member, a Trump critic, an AI foe and an establishment pick square off

The Democratic primary in the deep-blue, Manhattan-based 12th District is awash with big names — including a Kennedy family scion, a prominent anti-Trump former Republican and two state lawmakers, one of whom is the subject of millions in advertising spending linked to artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency forces.

With a fractured field that includes eight candidates, the outcome might not do much to settle the ideological divisions within the Democratic Party. But, with several controversial contenders, it could offer some indication of what voters care about most.

Assemblyman Micah Lasher is the choice of retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler, and he’s also backed by Gov. Kathy Hochul and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in one of the nation’s richest congressional districts.

Another state assemblyman, Alex Bores, is a former Palantir employee who became an enemy of artificial intelligence companies after he co-sponsored a 2025 New York artificial intelligence safety law.

George Conway, once a prominent GOP attorney who emerged as a prominent and frequently televised critic of Trump while his ex-wife, Kellyanne Conway, worked in the president’s White House, is making his first run for office. His candidacy is a test, nearly two years after former Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned with former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, of whether Democratic voters have any interest in aligning with former Republicans who sided with the party not out of ideological alignment but distaste for the president.

The 33-year-old Jack Schlossberg is the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy and the son of Caroline Kennedy. He is seeking to become the latest in a long line of Kennedy family members — and if he wins, he would be the only one currently in elected office.

The last Kennedy to win an election was former US Rep. Joe Kennedy III in 2018; he lost a run for a Senate seat in Massachusetts two years later. However, three family members — including Schlossberg’s mother — were ambassadors or envoys during former President Joe Biden’s administration, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is President Donald Trump’s health and human services secretary.
